As proposed by Wilhelm Roux in 1885, the key goal of experimental embryology ("Entwicklungsmechanik") was to elucidate whether organisms or their parts develop autonomously ("self-differentiation") or require interactions with other parts or the environment. However, experimental embryologists soon realized that concepts like "self-differentiation" only make sense when applied to particular parts or units of the developing embryo as defined both in time and space. Whereas the formation of tissues or organs may initially depend on interactions with surrounding tissues, they later become independent of such interactions or "determined." Moreover, the determination of a particular tissue or organ primordium has to be distinguished from the spatially coordinated determination of its parts-what we now refer to as "patterning." While some primordia depend on extrinsic influences (e.g., signals from adjacent tissues) for proper patterning, others rely on intrinsic mechanisms. Such intrinsically patterned units may behave as "morphogenetic fields" that can compensate for lost parts and regulate their size and proper patterning. While these insights were won by experimental embryologists more than 100 years ago, they retain their relevance today. To enable the generation of more life-like organoids in vitro for studying developmental processes and diseases in a dish, questions about the spatiotemporal units of development (when and how tissues and organs are determined and patterned) need to be increasingly considered. This review briefly sketches this conceptual history and its continued relevance by focusing on the determination and patterning of the inner ear with a specific emphasis on some studies published in this journal., Competing Interests: Declarations. Accurate quantification of nano-selenium (nSe) and other ionic Se species in aquatic environments is a prerequisite for reliable estimation of their potential hazards. In this study, a micropore membrane filtration-based method followed by ICP-MS analysis was proposed for the selective concentration and determination of nSe in the water column. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and nylon micropore filtration membranes were proven to efficiently capture nSe under optimal conditions (retention > 91.0 ± 0.87%). At the same time, ionic selenite and selenate could escape from the membranes, realizing the isolation of nSe and ionic Se species. The interference of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during separation can be resolved by adding Ca (II) ions, which can induce the formation of DOM aggregates by cation bridging effects. nSe retained on PVDF membranes could be effectively eluted with FL-70 (a powerful alkaline surfactant) aqueous solutions (0.5%, m/v) while maintaining the original size and morphology. Although nSe trapped on nylon membranes could not be easily eluted, quantification can also be achieved after membrane digestion. Speciation of ionic selenite and selenate in the filtrate was further conducted with an anion exchange column by using HPLC coupled with ICP-MS. The developed method was used to analyze Se species in six real water samples. Spiking experiments showed that the recoveries of nSe ranged from 70.2 ± 2.7% to 85.8 ± 1.3% at a spike level of 0.2 µg/L, and the recoveries of Se (IV) and Se (VI) ranged from 83.6 ± 0.5% to 101 ± 1% at a spike level of 0.55 µg/L, verifying the feasibility for the analysis of environmental water samples. In this work, we investigated the morphological and electrochemical properties of gallium/bismuth mixed oxide. The bismuth concentration was varied from 0 to 100%. The correct ratio was determined with inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), while surface characteristics were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement. Electrochemical characteristics were studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in the Fe 2+/3+ couple. The obtained materials were tested for adrenaline detection. After square wave voltammetry (SWV) optimization, the best electrode showed a wide linear working range from 7 to 100 µM at pH 6 of the Britton-Robinson buffer solution (BRBS) supporting electrolyte. The limit of detection (LOD) for the proposed method was calculated as 1.9 µM, with a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 5.8 µM. The excellent selectivity of the proposed method, with good repeatability and reproducibility, strongly suggests the possible application of the procedure for the determination of adrenaline in artificially prepared real samples. The practical applicability with good recovery values indicates that the morphology of the materials is closely connected with other parameters, which further suggests that the developed approach can offer a low-cost, rapid, selective, and sensitive method for adrenaline monitoring., (© 2023. In this study, a porous molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor was successfully fabricated for the selective assay of bisphenol S (BPS) by introducing N-methacryloyl-L tyrosine functional monomer. The molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based sensor (MA-Tyr@MIP/GCE) was prepared via photopolymerization on the glassy carbon electrode and subsequently characterized by using cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The analytical performance of the sensor was evaluated via CV and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) measurements. Under the optimized conditions, the rebinding experiment demonstrated that the peak current of the porous MIP-based sensor obviously decreased with the increase of BPS concentration in the concentration range of 1-10 fM. Therefore, the detection limit was determined as 0.171 fM. It should be underlined that MA-Tyr@MIP/GCE exhibited high sensitivity and excellent selectivity because MA-TyrMA-Tyr@MIP/GCE sensor has a higher imprinting factor (IF) toward BPS in respect to competitive analogs, i.e., bisphenol A, bisphenol B, and bisphenol F. The practical application of the sensor also showed good reproducibility and stability for the detection of BPS in human serum and water samples. A rapid, simple, and highly sensitive electroanalytical method was developed for the first time for the detection of ultra-trace amounts of nilotinib in sodium lauryl sulphate media. The electrochemical behavior of nilotinib was investigated on a glassy carbon electrode in the absence and presence of sodium lauryl sulphate media by cyclic voltammetry and adsorptive stripping voltammetric methods. The cyclic voltammograms proved that the electrochemical behavior of nilotinib showed irreversible and diffusion-adsorption-controlled oxidation processes in 0.1 M H 2 SO 4 . The effect of surfactant concentration on the first and second peaks of nilotinib was examined. Depending on whether the surfactants had a monomer or monolayer hemimicelle structure, they were attracted to amine moieties at related points in the nilotinib structure through the electrostatic interaction. The sensitivity of the method was markedly enhanced in the presence of surfactants using adsorptive stripping square-wave voltammetry. Under optimum conditions, nilotinib was determined in a concentration range of 2.0 × 10 -8 to 2.0 × 10 -6  mol L -1 , with a limit of detection of 6.33 × 10 -9  mol L -1 in 0.1 M H 2 SO 4 containing 2.0 × 10 -7  mol L -1 sodium lauryl sulphate. The proposed method can be applied for the sensitive determination of nilotinib in biological samples. Graphical abstract.
