The metal-free feature of mechanosynthesis of bis(3-indolyl)methane derivatives using poly(4-vinyl pyridine), a commercially available functional polymer, by ball mill technique at ambient conditions was studied. The condensation of various carbonyl compounds with two indoles smoothly proceeded, and pure products were easily isolated in high to excellent yields. Poly(4-vinylpyridine) exhibited high recyclability without any loss of catalytic activity or change in the chemical structure. The influence of polymer M̅W with a certain PDI on the mechanosynthesis of BIMs was investigated. In addition, the effect of the ball and jar with zirconium oxide material was studied on the rate and yield of the BIMs synthesis process. The method was scalable and generated minimal hazardous wastes. Some merits of the current methodology are such as the good to high yields for various carbonyl compounds and avoiding the use of toxic, expensive, and metal-containing catalysts with a tedious process of preparation, separation, and purification.

This paper presents a green protocol for the synthesis of pyrano[4,3-b]pyrans using a catalytic amount of 4,4′-trimethylenedipiperidine (TMDP) as a novel, efficient and recyclable organocatalyst through ball milling process at room temperature. The essential part of this protocol is a Knoevenagel condensation and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that exhibits the catalytic efficiency 4,4′-TMDP for the one-pot multicomponent reaction under melt-state conditions. The scope of the present protocol was explored and demonstrated for the synthesis of pyrano[4,3-b]pyrans in an environment-friendly protocol. The several interesting features of the present methodology are including a cost-effectiveness procedure, good to excellent yield of the desired products, high reaction rate, a broad substrate-scope, and recyclability of organocatalyst; as well as the 4,4′-TMDP is a nontoxic, inexpensive, and commercially available catalyst. Furthermore, this efficient methodology displays a combination of the synthetic virtues of conventional multicomponent reaction with ecological benefits and convenience of a facile mechanochemical process.

This paper presents a novel and efficient protocol for the synthesis of pyrrolidinones using catalytic loading of 1,1'-butylenebis(3-sulfo-3H-imidazol-1-ium) hydrogen sulfate as a recyclable Brönsted acid ionic liquid through ball milling process at room temperature under solvent-free conditions. The developed method provides good to excellent yields of various pyrrolidinones in environmentally friendly conditions. Furthermore, this efficient protocol displays a combination of the synthetic advantage of one-pot multicomponent reaction with ecological benefits and convenience of a mechanochemical procedure.

The viscosity of neat ionic liquids is very important for their application in organic synthesis as a solvent because most of the neat ionic liquids are very viscous, which would result in the less efficient mass transfer of reactants. In the present study, a series of novel dihydro-[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines were prepared using a low viscous and acid-functionalized ionic liquid. Our results showed that new ionic liquid can act as a green solvent and acid catalyst due to low viscosity and acid functionality. The products were simply extracted and the ionic liquid was retrieved several times without reducing its catalytic efficiency. The current application of TMDPS in the one-pot multicomponent reactions as dual solvent-catalyst highlights the importance of low viscous acid-functionalized ionic liquids in organic synthesis, and we hope that further research will be conducted in the future to finding other applications of TMDPS with promising results.

1,1′-butylenebis(3-methyl-3H-imidazol-1-ium) hydrogen sulfate as an efficient, halogen-free, and reusable binuclear Brönsted ionic liquid catalyzed the synthesis of ethyl-4-aryl/heteryl-hexahydro-trimehtyl-5-oxoquinoline-3-carboxylates by the one-pot condensation of dimedone, aryl/heteryl aldehydes, ethyl acetoacetate, and ammonium acetate under solvent-free conditions. This method has the advantages of high yields, clean reaction, simple methodology, and short reaction time. The ionic liquid could be recycled and reused four times without significant loss of in the catalytic activity.
