The article presents summaries of papers delivered at the 125th annual meeting of the American Statistical Association. The meeting took place on September 1965 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the paper "On the Construction of Stochastic Working Life Tables," by Haskel Benishay, stochastic working life tables are constructed and evaluated. The essence of the construction of stochastic rather than the traditionally deterministic working life tables is in the utilization of the realistic assumptions that the number of births, the number of entries into the labor force, the duration of life, and the duration of working life, are random variables. The end result is a working life table with a double entry in each cell rather than the single traditional one. The implications of this approach for the evaluation of fluctuations in various subcomponents of the labor force are evaluated. Another paper "Measuring Elasticities of Air Travel," by Samuel L. Brown, summarizes research on the response of demand for air travel to differences of fares, incomes, and elapsed travel time. There are three kinds of studies. Multiple regression studies of time series of air traffic, fares and income in the national domestic market yield short-period fare elasticities and income-elasticities. A quarterly first-difference model stands well the usual statistical tests.

The article reports on the International Evidence-Based Librarianship conference held in Brisbane between October 16-19, 2005. Nearly 200 participants attended the conference, from many countries around the world. The Great Britain, Canada, U.S., Australia and New Zealand were all represented, with a very stimulating mix of practitioners and researchers/academics. The focus was on developments in evidence: linking research with practice. A range of workshops and presentations throughout the event elicited much greater interaction and questioning than generally occurs in U.S. conferences. At the conference a \vide range of research projects in library and information science were reported and discussed. During the conference the emphasis was led on the point that libraries have a very active interest in understanding what their users needs are, what services they should be delivering and how they should be developing their services to better meet these needs. Workshops included case studies of generalised library activities and services to develop research questions which were not limited to the health sectors.

This article focuses on the abstracts of the papers which were presented at the National Conference in sales management, that was held in March 16-20 in saint Louis. One of the abstract is , the U.S. news and world reports reported that 1.1 million students graduated from our universities last spring. Less than 20 percent had obtained full-time employment by graduation. This article will make a case for the development of student portfolios to enhance the job interviewing experience. A student portfolio is a document that presents pieces of evidence portraying educational experiences, development of skills and extracurricular activities highlighting a student's strengths. over their academic career. Historically used by students in other academic areas such as art, photography and architecture, business schools have largely ignored this important strategic interviewing tool. Another abstract explores the importance of classroom behaviors of marketing professors to the success of the students. One hundred fifty marketing students from three universities were surveyed to determine which professor behaviors students perceived as contributing most to their academic success.

CONFERENCES & conventions ,ECONOMICS ,GRADUATE education ,ECONOMISTS - Abstract
This article presents information on the annual meeting of American Economic Association (AEA). Of particular interest this year were discussions about research on undergraduate and graduate education in economics. Over the years, there has been surprisingly little research on undergraduate education in economics. There was general agreement that the scope of research questions needs to be broadened by a challenging research agenda designed to stimulate the asking of new questions and to enlist additional economists in seeking answers to these questions. Even less attention has been given to graduate education in economics. Economists Kal Goldberg and Bill Becker developed a proposal for a Symposium on Graduate Education in Economics with purposes similar to the undergraduate research agenda. They posed a series of interesting questions on which research might be undertaken, and their hope was to enlist economists not closely linked to economic education to help undertake this research. The proposal called for commissioning a set of four issues papers that would be reviewed by formal discussants and then discussed by the other invitees to the symposium. The intent would be to publish the papers in a forthcoming issue of the "Journal of Economic Education."

CONFERENCES & conventions ,NUCLEAR weapons & the environment - Abstract
This article reports on the Department of Energy's decision to not attend a conference on the environmental consequences of nuclear weapons development. When planners at the University of California-Irvine began organizing an international conference on the environmental consequences of nuclear weapons development, they naturally assumed that some Energy Department employees--especially those at the national laboratories administered by the University of California-would take part in the April meeting. But while Tuck was praising his department's new open culture, Richard Claytor, an assistant secretary for defense programs, was closing the door, ostensibly to prevent foreign policy faux pas. Department critics call Energy's concern about the foreign policy implications of appearing before a group that included Chinese officials as well as Soviet officials and antinuclear activists' transparent nonsense.
