The aim of this study is to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) among physicians and nurses at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) in Beirut, Lebanon. A web-based survey was emailed to 518 physicians and 423 registered nurses in all medical departments at AUBMC. Of the 94 physicians responding to the survey, 61% have never referred a patient to a CAM practitioner yet 33% reported that they would refer if available. Sixty-two percent of physicians believed that incorporating evidence-based CAM therapies will increase patient satisfaction and 66% thought that offering CAM would attract more patients. Of the 80 nurses who responded, 78.7% have never referred a patient to a CAM practitioner, yet half reported that they would likely refer if a CAM practitioner was available. Fifty-seven percent of nurses surveyed believed that offering CAM would attract more patients while 59% thought that it would increase patient satisfaction. Most nurses were uncomfortable counseling patients about CAM modalities. Favorable attitudes towards CAM were reflected by the physicians and nurses as signified by the above-average attitude means towards CAM (M = 4.01, SD =.16 and M = 3.25, SD =.59, respectively). The study findings demonstrate that despite the physicians' and nurses' limited knowledge and their discomfort in counseling on CAM, they expressed acceptability and willingness in using and incorporating CAM therapies into clinical practice at AUBMC. This is the first study conducted in Lebanon that assesses both nurses' and physicians' perspectives on the use of all CAM domains in general within the same healthcare setting. Acquired haemophilia A (AHA) is a rare immune-mediated disorder characterised by the development of autoantibodies against factor VIII. Morbidity and mortality are in general high due to multiple factors including the age of the patient, underlying diseases, toxic effects of available treatments and bleeding itself. To assess the awareness about AHA among healthcare professionals (HCPs) in Lebanon where patients can present to non-haematologists with life-threatening bleeding disorders. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in September and October 2017 all over Lebanon among HCPs. The survey covered: (i) the geographic area of practice and specialty; (ii) bleeding disorders encountered within the last 2 years; (iii) assessment of knowledge on AHA; and (iv) importance of increasing awareness on AHA among HCPs. A total of 362 participants completed and returned the questionnaire (response rate 100%). The majority of the HCPs were practicing in Beirut (n=164; 45.3%) and were internists (n=106; 29.3%). 332 (93%) HCPs have encountered patients with bleeding problems within the last 2 years all over Lebanon. 327 (92.1%) HCPs agreed that increasing awareness on AHA among health care professionals is important. HCPs gave an average of 75.9% of correct answers on the survey. Appropriate treatment and diagnosis are essential when dealing with AHA. Knowledge gaps exist in the clinical practice when dealing with patients who have AHA. In this paper, total fertility estimates for Greater Beirut in the mid-eighties and early nineties are presented, and changes in socio-religious differentials of fertility across time are explored. The baseline information was recorded from registration details for all maternities in Beirut and its inner suburbs in 1984 and 1991: age of mother, number of children ever-born, hospital class, and religion of newborn. An indirect method was used to estimate total fertility from the joint distribution of mothers by age and parity, and, using hospital class as a proxy for social class, differentials in fertility were investigated by Poisson regression. The estimates of total fertility for Beirut shifted from 2.60 in 1984 to 2.52 in 1991, and were higher for Muslims than for Christians in the two periods. The regression analysis showed that: (1) the difference between the two religious groups persisted after control for social class, and in fact applied to the lower social class; (2) fertility dropped between the two dates in the lower social class, and more so for Muslims than for Christians. In comparison with other countries of the region, the decline in Beirut was found to be relatively modest. If the trends assessed in this study were to continue, the religious-based fertility differentials would taper off progressively in the capital city of Lebanon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A reprint and translation is presented of the article "The Madness of Being A Palestinian" by Mahmud Darwish, which appeared in the June 3, 1985 edition of "al-Yawm al-Sabi'". It discusses the 1985 killings in Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut Lebanon as well as the wider phenomenon of Arab violence against Palestinians. The author suggests that Arab victims of Israeli force are perpetuating the cycle of violence by victimizing Palestinians.

Six indirect techniques for estimating child mortality were applied to information on survival status of all children ever born, provided by a sample of 1,252 women delivered at the Maternity Unit of the American University of Beirut Hospital. The results were compared, using as a reference the estimate derived from partial birth histories (ages of surviving children, ages at death of children who have died). Their dispersion is minimal for the probability of dying between birth and fifth birthday, estimated at 48 per thousand. For each mother, the ratio of the observed number of children who have died, to that expected given the lengths of exposure of the children to the risk of mortality, was used as a dependent variable in a multiple regression analysis. Educational level of mothers had a significant effect, but not occupational status of father, religion or consanguinuity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
