The objective of this paper is to examine how the imposition of Public Service Obligations (PSO) on certain routes may affect the transportation sector, with a focus on aviation in the European Single Market. Thus, this research investigates how this form of public intervention can be useful to access adequeate transport system in remote and peripherical regions. Subsequently, this paper intends to display that the imposition of PSO on aviation routes should be considered as a unique mean of market intervention on behalf of territorial cohesion. To accomplish this, an analysis of the economic impact in terms of efficiency and sustainability in the case of the scheduled air route between Almeria and Seville in addition to other transportation alternatives such the bus or train was conducted. Additionally, this research attempts to shift the research focus away from PSO routes in order to determine the convenience of administrative concession as a way to foster the creation of specific routes, which furthermore cannot be covered by the entrepreneurship of private initiative in a free market regime. Consequently, this approach recognises that this form of public intervention is a way of correcting particular market failures, such as the lack of the adequate transportation. This paper analyses the effect on retail fuel prices of factors such as belonging to dominant firms, the position of a local monopoly or oligopoly, and service station location. We study the effect of belonging to the dominant firms in the market, Repsol and Cepsa, of enjoying a local natural monopoly or oligopoly in rural areas, and of being located in places with captive demand, such as highways and motorways, as well as in the city centre. We apply this study to service stations in the province of Seville (Spain). The main findings are that the two main distributors, Repsol and Cepsa, set a higher price. We also find market power at a local level, which appears through monopoly or duopolies in rural areas, and which also results in higher prices, albeit to a much lesser degree. In addition, we see that stations servicing users on high-capacity roads as well as stations located in Seville city centre also set higher prices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamics of anthropic occupation of a territory over time play a central role in shaping the cultural landscape we see today. This paper presents a methodology for visually representing this phenomenon. The method consists of transforming data from archaeological records and historic cartography into a series of maps that allow historic settlement patterns to be interpreted and the historic depth of contemporary urban areas to be revealed. To create these maps, a series of geospatial analyses were carried out, including density analysis and weighted overlay. The methodology was applied to the peri-urban area of Seville in southern Spain, although it may be extrapolated to other regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The expansion of holiday rentals' worldwide makes it relevant to confirm what are the determinants of these accommodations' daily rates. This research aims to compare two models on estimating holiday rentals' daily rate through variables that influence it; using artificial neural networks and hedonic pricing method, with the same cross-sectional dataset and variables with data obtained from Booking.com listings from Seville (Spain), a 'cultural tourism' large European city. Artificial neural networks estimations adapt better than the hedonic pricing method due to non-linear relations involved, although hedonic estimators have a clearer economic interpretation. Variables related to size, location and amenities appear as the most relevant in the models, including also seasonal and special events factors. The models presented, not only help to clarify these variables but also allow estimating a rental price congruent with the characteristics of the dwelling and season, being useful as an objective valuation method for the main agents of the accommodation sector: Owners, clients and peer-to-peer platforms. This study wants to highlight the convenience of using Booking.com listings as the main data source, as two variables presented as relevant for the models (size and location) are not available in other peer-to-peer platforms like Airbnb.
