The air freight supply chain consists of several agents. Among them are truckers, who ship freight between customers and airports, and airlines, who transport the freight in-between airports. Handling agents link the two: they receive freight from truckers, consolidate it and forward it to the airlines and vice versa. They need to organise and execute processes efficiently. Digitalisation offers great potential in this context. Furthermore, handling agents' workers handle most of the freight manually. The resulting elevated levels of physical strain make workers prone to muscular-skeletal disorders. Based on a case study at two handling agents, we first investigate the handling agents' process chain from an economic perspective. We identify shortcomings and present countermeasures with an emphasis on digitalisation. Second, we analyse the physical strain on the workers and evaluate devices that could improve ergonomics. Assistive devices like Standing Wheelchairs (SWC) have remained out of reach of the economically underprivileged even before the pandemic-induced financial downturn, and more so now. This paper describes the mechanical design of a manual user-actuated SWC that is cost-effective (equivalent of USD 210 in India, ex-factory) and has special features that minimise user effort and accommodates varying body weights (50–110 kg) and dimensions (1.52–1.83 m height). The design includes a six-bar mechanism and spring balancing to optimise user effort during operation. The optimised gas spring incorporates adjustability to minimise each user's force for sit-stand-sit transitions. The handle shape is ergonomically designed using kinematic analysis to provide convenient gripping positions for actuation. The design has been customised based on parametric studies to suit varying body weights. Overall, the SWC design provides standing functionality with ease of operation, safety locks, customisability, affordability, outdoor mobility and is aesthetically pleasing. Customisability and the low cost of the device would enhance the accessibility of the SWC to a larger group of eligible users. Only 1 in 10 people with disabilities can access assistive devices, underlining the critical need for low-cost assistive products. This paper describes the design evolution of a manual user-operated standing wheelchair (SWC), translating from prototype to product. The SWC design has been refined over 5 years through multiple iterations based on comments from user trials. The SWC product, Arise, provides standing functionality, facile outdoor mobility, affordability, customisability, and is aesthetically pleasing. A one-time fitting and training ensure optimal effort for operation, correct posture, and comfortable user experience. The SWC accommodates users of different sizes and body weights (up to 110 kg) and minimises user effort with the use of a gas spring. Incorporating discrete adjustments enables customisation while retaining the advantages of mass manufacturing, which is necessary for ensuring affordability. The SWC has been field-tested and well received by over 100 wheelchair users, and Arise was launched recently by the industry partner. It should be noted that RESNA cautions on the use of any standing device without medical consultation. Nevertheless, with appropriate dissemination and awareness, it is anticipated that the affordable SWC product, Arise, will immensely benefit the eligible users and make a difference in their quality of life. The manual user-operated Arise Standing Wheelchair (SWC) is the end-result of multiple design iterations based on comments from user trials. The Arise SWC provides standing functionality, outdoor mobility, affordability, and customizability. This paper describes a user experience study of the Arise SWC's pre-commercial version. Thirty participants (N = 30, 25 Male, 5 Female) were recruited for the study. All the participants were people with spinal cord injury. The study was conducted over a period of six weeks (five participants per week) within the hospital premises under the supervision of clinical personnel. A 30 min interactive training session involved thirteen activities. During the trial period, the participants were trained to perform twenty-two activities to familiarize themselves with the SWC. The participants were also trained to perform four functional usage activities with the SWC. At the end of the study, participant responses to ten outcome measures were captured using a smiley-based Likert-scale questionnaire. A majority of the participants (93.3%) felt happy when they stood in the SWC. The majority participants (83.3%) preferred the Arise SWC over their current wheelchair. Also, 80% participants anticipated that they could get more work done at home using the standing function of the wheelchair. A one-time fitting and training ensured optimal effort for the SWC operation, correct posture, and comfortable user experience. With proper dissemination and awareness, it is believed that the Arise SWC will benefit eligible users and improve their quality of life. Quality of life for the visually impaired is an urgent worldwide issue that needs to be addressed. Obstacle detection is one of the most important navigation tasks for the visually impaired. In this research, a novel range sensor placement scheme is proposed in this paper for the development of obstacle detection devices. Based on this scheme, two prototypes have been developed targeting at different user groups. The solution described in this paper allows wheelchair users with reduced mobility or physical disabilities to move independently throughout an aircraft and to board and disembark autonomously. A motorized aircraft seat was developed to substitute current aircraft aisle wheelchairs. The real-scale functional prototype was evaluated in a focus group. The results show that the proposed solution is considered superior to current solutions in nine of twenty requirements and neutral in one of them. There was low agreement among the focus group participants in ten requirements, even though the focus group discussion brought interesting reflections, including positive feedback, critics, and suggestions for further research and development in the field. The design concept consists of a motorized wheelchair that becomes the seat of the aircraft when anchored on a docking platform attached to the aircraft fuselage via a seat track. The manoeuvring is allowed by a rotating mechanism, which solves a critical function that is to enable wheelchair manoeuvring in the narrow aisles of aircraft. A parking assistant system aids the control of the motorized wheelchair. The main benefits of this solution are to reduce seat transfers during the flight experience and to provide more autonomy and comfort for passengers during flights. A motorized aircraft seat was developed to replace traditional aircraft aisle wheelchairs. A real-scale functional prototype was built, tested in an aircraft mockup, and evaluated in a focus group. The main benefits of the proposed solution are to reduce the number of chair transfers during the flight experience and to provide more autonomy for passengers. Aim: Assistive technologies traditionally rely on either powered actuation or passive structures to provide increased strength, support or the ability to perform specific functions. At one end of the spectrum are powered exoskeletons, which significantly increase a user's strength, but require powerful actuators, complex control systems and heavy power sources. At the other end are orthoses, which are generally unpowered and light in weight, relying on the mechanical properties of passive mechanical elements. Ideally, assistive technologies should combine the benefits of both systems and enhance human motion while remaining lightweight and efficient. This paper presents the development of a lightweight unpowered ankle exoskeleton that relies on the spring-like properties of a Pneumatic Artificial Muscle, which is inflated and sealed. Methods: This flexible air-spring is used to harness gait energy and compliment the human ankle torque at push-off. To mechanically validate the proposed exoskeleton design, a prototype was fabricated and experimentally tested. Results: Unlike other existing devices, the proposed unpowered exoskeleton was able to store a significant amount of energy and release it all at once. The timing mechanism worked as intended and triggered the release of 115 N m of torque when the ankle reached a pre-determined angle. Conclusion: Overall, the device demonstrated the ability to provide significant contribution to the ankle torque, timed to release precisely at the push-off phase of the gait cycle. The currently proposed ankle exoskeleton makes use of an unpowered, fully mechanical system to provide walking assistance to users by providing additional torque to the ankle joint. The newly developed assistive device is devised as a solution for persons struggling with mobility issues, and can be used both as a means for rehabilitation or as a permanent assistive devices for patients struggling with long-term disabilities. Objectives: To review models and instruments for the selection and advisory process of assistive technology in the rehabilitation field as reported in the current scientific literature. Design: Systematic literature review. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in MEDLINE (2003-2007). In a peer-review process with four independent investigators, studies were selected according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Because of the poor publication situation, non-research sources were included as well. The data extracted and compared are: information concerning the selection process for assistive technology, whether a client-centred approach is used during the selection procedure, the use of models and instruments, and their compatibility with the ICF. Results: The search resulted in 16 papers. None of the studies had an experimental design; nine of the publications were literature reviews. There is a lack of reliable and valid models and instruments for the selection process of assistive technology in the scientific literature. The prevalence of the Matching Person and Technology Model from Scherer (1998) is explicit in the publications. The ICF and ISO 9999 are the only classification systems mentioned in relation to assistive technology, although rarely. Conclusion: This is a poorly developed field resulting in a lack of evidence-based procedures for AT selection. Purpose. The previously published 'Framework for the conceptual modelling of assistive technology device (ATD) outcomes' assumes antecedent factors that inform it and influence its component variables. This paper proposes a model of factors influencing consumer predispositions and provider practices related to procuring a particular ATD, which is the starting point in the framework. Method. The relevant literature on a variety of factors that influence specific ATD selection is summarized. Results. The decision that a particular ATD is an appropriate and desirable support for an individual is the result of a process which is affected by a broader societal climate that determines, in part, unique personal climates which then foster unique provider and consumer perspectives predisposing each to the selection of a particular ATD. Sit-to-stand is a common activity in daily life. It is difficult for the elderly and patients with lower limb disorders to complete this motion due to limb pain, muscle weakness, partial loss of motor control function, and physical defects in joints. An STS assistive device is a piece of automated medical equipment that can facilitate rehabilitation training for patients with lower limb disorders and improve their lower limb function. In this paper, we introduce a 3-DOF series type STS assistive device. First, we selected 26 healthy adults to carry out an STS transfer experiment, and we obtained the trajectory and velocity of each joint and the law of plantar pressure during STS motion. Second, based on the above kinematics and dynamics law, a 3-DOF series mechanism was designed. Through forward and inverse kinematics analysis, the relationship between the end-effector and the linear actuator was established. The trajectory planning of the end-effector was carried out according to the natural STS transfer trajectory, and the law of the linear actuator was obtained. The trajectory planning was verified by ADAMS. Finally, the Arduino controller was used to build the control system of the STS assistive device, and the prototype experiment was carried out. Humans can adapt to and effectively walk on different kinds of surfaces and in various environments, but fatigue is inevitable when walking or even just standing for long periods, especially when carrying heavy objects. Methods for assisting walking or standing work are in demand, but most research thus far has been focused on using electricity to implement both interlocking and assistive power; this approach has the drawback of high-energy consumption. Therefore, we previously developed a lightweight assistive device that stores part of the kinetic energy generated during the leg swing-to-leg contact phases, and uses this energy to effectively assist during the stance phase. The developed device comprises surge tanks, an air cylinder, and other components arranged in a simple configuration and interlocked with walking by using a simple sensing system, therefore, making it suitable for use over long periods. This paper presents experimental measurements of the assistive force generated using the proposed device when it is attached to human subjects. The measurements were conducted under predicted usages to evaluate the assistive performance of the proposed device, and the measurement results demonstrate its effectiveness. Patients with muscle weakness such as muscular dystrophy usually need someone’s assistance in their daily activities. In order to reduce the caregiver burden and to improve quality of life (QOL) of the patients, various robotic technologies have been developed. This paper presents an exoskeletal assistance system EMAS II for the patients, which assists the upper extremity for the purpose of daily activities such as eating, writing, or other desk works. The EMAS II assists four DOF; shoulder flexion-extension, shoulder abduction-adduction, shoulder medial-lateral rotation, and elbow flexion-extension. The EMAS II has three kinds of user interfaces which are operated by residual functions of the patients, because it is important for patients’ health and initiative to use the residual functions. In order to control the four DOFs exoskeleton system using the interfaces with less DOF, the EMAS II simulates upper limb motion patterns of healthy people. The patterns are modeled by extracting correlations between the height of the wrist joint and that of the elbow joint. Therefore, users have only to control the position of their wrist joint to do tasks at a table. Through an experiment with a healthy subject, the feasibility of meal assistance by the EMAS II was confirmed. Furthermore, the system was applied to a spinal muscular atrophy patient in a clinical trial to check the usability. Task-specific rehabilitation is a key indicator for successful rehabilitation to improve the upper limb performance after stroke. Assistive robotic and non-robotic devices are emerging to provide rehabilitation therapy; however, the effectiveness of task-specific training programs using assistive training devices compared with task-specific usual care training has not been summarized yet. Therefore, the effectiveness of task-specific training using assistive arm devices (TST-AAD) compared with task-specific usual care (TSUC) on the upper limb performance of patients with a stroke was investigated. To assess task specificity, a set of criteria was proposed: participation, program, relevant, repeated, randomized, reconstruction and reinforced. Out of 855 articles, 17 fulfilled the selection criteria. A meta-analysis was performed on the Fugl-Meyer Assessment scores in the subacute and chronic stages after stroke and during follow-up. Both TST-AAD and TSUC improved the upper limb performance after stroke. In the sub-acute phase after stroke, TST-AAD was more effective than TSUC in reducing the upper limb impairment, although findings were based on only three studies. In the chronic phase, TST-AAD and TSUC showed similar effectiveness. No differences between the two types of training were found at the follow-up measurements. Future studies should describe training, device usage and criteria of task specificity in a standardized way to ease comparison. Arm or hand function is often undertreated in stroke patients, assistive training devices may be able to improve the upper limb performance. Task-specific training using assistive devices is effective in improving the upper limb performance after stroke. Task-specific training using assistive devices seems to be more effective in reducing impairment compared with task specific usual care in the subacute phase after stroke, but they are equally effective in the chronic phase of stroke. Objectives. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of patient transfer assistive devices in reducing the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among nurses. Methods. PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched to identify studies with a quantitative assessment of the efficacy of patient transfer assistive devices on the incidence and injury claims of WMSDs as compared to the manual lifting of patients. A health impact analysis of the pre–post intervention of assistive device implementation was performed. The percentage of the reduction of forces, incidence of WMSDs, number of missed workdays and injury compensation claims were calculated, pooled and presented as boxplots. Results. A total of 25 studies met the inclusion criteria. The best post-intervention outcomes of assistive devices deployment in the healthcare setting included a reduction in WMSD incidence by 59.8%, missed workdays by 90.0% and workers' compensation claims by 95.0%. Additionally, hand force declined by 71% (p < 0.05) and 70% (p < 0.05) with the use of air-assisted devices and ceiling lifts respectively. Conclusions. Overall, the evidence suggests that patient transfer assistive devices, notably ceiling lifts and air-assisted devices, are effective in reducing the risk of WMSDs among nurses. The Assistive Technology Device Outcomes Research (ATDOR) checklist was developed as a reporting guideline for researchers to enhance the quality of research in this field. The checklist contains 13 items that cover outcome domains unique to assistive technology devices (ATDs). The ATDOR was intended to be an adjunct to existing publication guidelines for outcomes research. The aim of this investigation was to examine the ability of the ATDOR checklist to identify strengths and weaknesses in ATD outcomes research publications that may not be detected using another publication guideline designed for outcomes research. Twenty original ATD outcome studies were scored using the Template for Intervention Description and Replication (TIDieR) checklist, and the ATDOR in two evaluation rounds. In the first round, articles were scored using the TIDieR alone. In the second round, they were scored using the TIDieR and ATDOR together. The difference in percentage scores between the two evaluation rounds was examined using the Wilcoxon signed rank-sum test for paired data. There was a statistically significant difference in the percentage scores between the two evaluation rounds (Wilcoxon statistic = 10, Z = −3.547, p<.000). When used alongside the TIDieR, the ATDOR adds significant value to evaluations of reporting quality on assistive technology outcomes research. As this field continues to grow, researchers are invited to join in efforts to standardise reporting to promote healthier outcomes for ATD users. We devised a low-tech, low-cost, robust, and minimally obtrusive navigational travelling aid to be paired with and bolster standard white cane use for people with visual impairments. The device combines ultrasonic range detection with proportional vibrational output. The navigational aid was devised using a sensing belt equipped with independent ultrasonic sensors for distance measurements. Sensors were mounted using adjustable mobile clips to allow for user variability. The sensing belt was connected to a stimulation belt affixed to the ribcage. The stimulation belt used vibrating motors with vibration proportional to the distance between the belt wearer and surrounding obstacles sensed by corresponding ultrasonic sensors. The device was validated through preliminary testing on blindfolded, but fully sighted, persons and one blind person (all authors) in navigating a novel environment without supplemental aid. Testing sessions varied from 45 to 90 min. In preliminary tests, the devised ultrasonic-sensor-belt and vibration-actuator-equipped belt combination was capable of informing users of surrounding obstacles in real-time while navigating a hallway with several turns. Utilizing exoskeleton devices to help elderly or empower workers is a growing field of research in robotics. The structure of an exoskeleton can vary depending on user's physical dimensions, joints or muscles targeted for assistance, and maximum achievable actuator torque. In this research, a Human-Model-In-the-Loop (HMIL) constrained optimization technique is proposed to design the RoboWalk lower-limb exoskeleton. RoboWalk is an under-actuated non-anthropomorphic assistive robot, that besides applying the desired assistive force, exerts an undesirable disturbing force leading to the user's fall. The HMIL method uses the augmented human-robot 2D model to take RoboWalk and human body's joint torques into account during optimization. The superiority of HMIL method is proven by comparing the results with other strategies in the literature. Obtained results reveal elimination of the disturbing forces, 2 N.m. reduction in average human knee-joint torque, and significant decrease in the actuator required torque. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to develop and pilot-test reporting guidelines for manuscripts describing studies of assistive technology device outcomes, with the hopes of improving the overall quality of research in this field. The research is presented in two stages. In Stage 1, a literature review was completed to identify the essential components of a conceptual framework for reporting guidelines and to create a checklist. In Stage 2, two independent reviewers evaluated twenty articles using the checklist to identify any short-comings of the tool and produce an estimate of interrater reliability. Two items of the original checklist were revised after reconciling disagreements between the two raters. The Cohen's Kappa value of the checklist was 0.887 (p <.000), reflecting excellent interrater agreement. The overall percent agreement was 94.6%. Reporting guidelines for studies of assistive technology device outcomes appear to be reliable. Although the checklist may require periodic updating, it has potential for advancing outcomes research. Researchers are invited to share comments and criticisms to aid in the efforts of enhancing the quality of reporting in this field. Reporting checklists and guidelines are effective tools for achieving a minimum standard of reporting quality in all areas of rehabilitation research. A scoping review was undertaken to identify strategies which increase telephone accessibility for workers with hearing loss. The scoping review protocol outlined by the Joanna Brigg's Institute was used. Terms relating to hearing loss, telephones, and management strategies were searched in CINAHL, MEDLINE, and Web of Science. An additional hand search was also conducted for two journals and two publications from consumer organisations as they were known to publish relevant articles. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to the resulting 1086 texts. Strategies from the selected texts were organised into categories through thematic analyses. Study sample: Eighty-four texts were included in the review. The effective telephone strategies fall into the following categories: amplifying the telephone signal, reducing background noise, listening to the telephone through both ears, accessing text-based supports to understanding telephone speech, using Internet-based telephony, optimising mobile phones, improving telephone skills and communication strategies, and requesting accommodation in the workplace. Strategies exist by which the telephone can be made more accessible to workers with hearing loss. These have the potential to benefit both workers and their employers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: A systematic review was performed evaluating the effectiveness of Information and Communication Technology-based Assistive Technology (ICT-based-AT) to compensate for impaired cognition in everyday life activities. Materials and methods: The study was registered in PROSPERO, registration number CRD42018114913. Six databases were searched (years 2008–2019). Inclusion criteria: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or cohort studies; people with impaired cognition due to non-degenerative diseases; and evaluation of ICT-based-ATs' effectiveness regarding activity and participation, including prospective memory, execution of tasks and satisfaction with task execution. Each study's level of evidence and quality were assessed using "JBI Levels of Evidence" and the "JBI Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument", respectively. Results: About 3,153 publications were located, of which 12 were included. The levels of evidence were: 1.c (RCT) (n = 7), 1.d (pseudo-RCT) (n = 1) and 3.e (observational study without control group) (n = 4). Three studies had high quality (2 RCT/1 cohort), eight acceptable (5 RCT/3 cohort) and one low (RCT) quality. Conclusions: Smartphones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), etc. with e.g. calendars and reminder alarms can improve prospective memory, especially for people with ABI. Furthermore, PDAs and similar products with prompts can improve execution of tasks for people with cognitive impairment due to different diagnoses. Products should be tailored to the users' needs and the users trained in product use. Further studies concerning children, older people and people with intellectual and developmental disability are required; as well as studies on cost-effectiveness and the effectiveness of related services. In order to support activity and participation in everyday life for people with prospective memory problems, especially people with acquired brain injury, they should be offered information and communication technology-based products, such smart phones, mobile phones, personal digital assistants or similar mainstream products equipped with reminding software. People with cognitive impairment having difficulties executing tasks independently should be offered PDAs and mobile telephones and similar products with prompting software, e.g. audio-verbal, picture and video-based task-sequencing prompts. Purpose: To evaluate the access to human rights of persons with disabilities who use prosthetic and orthotic assistive devices, and to compare groups of participants in terms of gender, residential area, income, and type and level of assistive device. The addressed areas were rights to: health, a standard of living adequate for health, education, marry and establish a family, vote, and work. Methods: Questionnaires were used to collect self-reported data from 139 lower-limb prosthetic and orthotic users in Sierra Leone. Results: About half of the participants considered their overall physical health good, while 37% said their mental health was bad. Most said they lacked access to medical care. About half of the participants had regular access to safe drinking water. Most had reasonable housing and 60% could read and write. Half of the participants were married and 70% had children. Almost all reported that they could vote if desired and about half were working. Conclusions: There is still a need for improved access to medical care when needed for persons with lower limb physical disability in Sierra Leone. Better access to food and clean water are also necessary to facilitate a standard of living adequate for health, to realize the health rights of persons with disabilities. In Sierra Leone, persons with disabilities need a source of regular income to access basic needs, including clean water, access to food, medical care, and medications which should be considered in addition to providing rehabilitation services. To facilitate implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Sierra Leone's health system needs to be strengthened: an increased number of healthcare staff should be educated, knowledge of disability should be improved in the general public to reduce negative attitudes toward persons with disabilities, persons with disabilities should be included in mainstream health services, and national development policies should target sustainable development goals to a greater extent than during the millennium development goal era. The objective of this study was to understand whether seniors would wear a wristband technology to help them improve, retain, regain, or strengthen hand and finger function and to gather information about the desired features of the technology to enhance compliance in use. The strength and functioning of the hand and fingers decrease as people age and can have a detrimental impact on the individual's quality of life. Studies have shown that regular exercise of the hands can help the individual maintain hand strength and improve function. Two self-reported, online questionnaires were designed and administered to seniors. Of the 105 surveyed, 62% indicated they would wear a wristband. The top desired wristband features identified were ease of putting the device on, unobtrusiveness and comfort of the device with a desired price point of $99 or less. The majority of seniors surveyed were interested in wearing the wristband; however, results revealed that the wristband would need to be tailored for this population for use and uptake of the wristband. The results of this study provide insight into the features and functionalities of a wristband that would enhance user compliance in seniors who wished to improve hand and finger function. In this study, a new electrooculography (EOG) based system that provides efficient communication for people suffered from motor neuron diseases is presented. The system consists of two distinct devices. The first device operates as a main unit that is activated by the subject's eye movements. This unit is capable of transmitting 10 different command/state messages. These messages enable subject to choose his/her situation such as "I'm fine", "I feel bad", "I'm hungry" and "I'm thirsty". Commands such as "Come", "Go". The number of messages can be increased. The main unit acquires the EOG signal from the subject. Newly developed analogue and digital signal conditioning interprets the eye movements as specific messages and transmits them to the second unit (receiver) using radio frequency transmitter. The messages related to the subject's demands and situation can be heard from both main and receiver unit speakers. The wireless receiver unit is capable of notifying the patient's command by auditory and visual indicators. This study investigates how older adults' attitude patterns affect assistive devices' (AD) use in a small-household context of Singapore. Community older adults with physical limitations (n = 481) completed face-to-face interviews for 90 min. Latent Profile Analysis analysed multiple indicators of attitudes towards ADs. Three groups were classified: positive attitude group (PAG); negative attitude group (NAG); and unwillingness to pay for ADs (UPG). PAG was most likely to use ADs, while UPG was least likely to use ADs. The findings are expected to help older adults age in place by improving equal distribution of technology resources that assist with daily tasks and activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Children with Rett Syndrome (RS) have neuromotor impairments that impact their mobility. Poor hand function among children with RS limits the selection of an assistive device for ambulation.Purpose:The purpose of this case report is to describe the process of selecting an assistive device for a child with RS to promote ambulation.Method:This single subject case reports on a 5-year-old girl with RS at a suburban mid-western early childhood special education setting.Results:The child in this case was able to walk the farthest distances with a metal toy shopping cart and then with an anterior facing four-wheeled walker.Conclusion:The outcome suggests that physical therapists and health professionals caring for young children with RS consider using a metal toy shopping cart to establish and practice ambulation prior to selection of a longer term, adjustable anterior facing walker like the one in this case report. Aim: To examine what demographics and clinical factors are associated with the provision of assistive technology (AT) devices in a low-income country. Method: Retrospective cross-sectional exploratory study design including 15 of the 20 localities across Bogotá D.C., Colombia, a city with 6 776 009 inhabitants. Results: The type of AT device provided was significantly dependent ( p < 0.001) on the client's diagnosis, impairment, age, and socio-economic strata, whether the client has a care giver, the geographical zone in which the client lives, the year of the AT provision, and the total number of AT delivered. In contrast, the client's gender ( p > 0.05) and the client's affiliated type of healthcare service had no effect. In addition to that, the client's age, the client's socio-economic strata, the number of AT devices provided to the client, and the diagnostic type were the factors with the strongest level of association with the type of AT device provided. Conclusions: Our research showed that the provision of AT in Bogotá D.C. prioritizes both people who are at the highest levels of vulnerability, and as many people as possible with the budget. The purpose of this study was to compare the motor performance of tongue, using Tongue Drive System, to hand operation for relatively complex tasks under different levels of background physical exertion. Thirteen young able-bodied adults performed tasks that tested the accuracy and variability in tracking a sinusoidal waveform, and the performance in playing two video games that require accurate and rapid movements with cognitive processing using tongue and hand under two levels of background physical exertion. Results show additional background physical activity did not influence rapid and accurate displacement motor performance, but compromised the slow waveform tracking and shooting performances in both hand and tongue. Slow waveform tracking performance by the tongue was compromised with an additional motor or cognitive task, but with an additional motor task only for the hand. Practitioner Summary:We investigated the influence of task complexity and background physical exertion on the motor performance of tongue and hand. Results indicate the task performance degrades with an additional concurrent task or physical exertion due to the limited attentional resources available for handling both the motor task and background exertion. Purpose. To evaluate the feasibility and reliability of a novel stiffness assessment tool implemented in the driven gait orthosis Paediatric Lokomat; to investigate the influence of single robotic-assisted gait training (RAGT) on muscle stiffness in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Methods. Ten children with spastic CP conducted a single standard RAGT session and stiffness was assessed before and after the RAGT. Nine of the ten subjects were tested twice on the same day to investigate test--retest reliability, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), standard error of measurement (SEM), coefficient of variation of the method error (CVME) and resistive torques during passive leg movements (stiffness in Nm/°°) were calculated. Results. ICCs showed high reliability (0.83--0.97) for hip and knee movements. SEM and CVME indicated 0.028--0.085 Nm/°°, 9.5--23.0%% of test--retest variability in hip and 0.018--0.064 Nm/°°, 13.3--43.5%% in knee measures. Using the assessment tool, a significant decrease in muscle stiffness in participants, especially in children with high levels of muscle tone, could be shown after a single session of RAGT. Conclusions. The assessment tool L-STIFF is a feasible tool for automated measurement of stiffness in children with CP, but it is not sensitive enough to record small changes in muscle tone. Objectives: To identify theoretical frameworks and instruments used by rehabilitation professionals to perform the selection process of assistive technology (AT) in neurological rehabilitation centres in six Western European countries. Design: Descriptive, exploratory study by using survey design. Methods: Sixty neurological rehabilitation centres were selected from the total number ( n = 259) of centres, identified through a search of official databases from national bodies and associations, with 10 in each country. Each centre was approached to identify a professional to be contacted. Custom-designed questionnaires with multiple-choice and open-ended questions were sent out by e-mail and regular mail to each of these professionals. Results: Thirty questionnaires were returned, of which 29 could be analysed. Ten participants reported using a theoretical framework to select AT. Four models, three frames of reference, and one international classification were mentioned. Fifteen professionals replied to the question on which instruments they use by mentioning one or more methods; 14 participants stated that they used no specific instruments or left the question open. The instruments mentioned show a broad variety, the majority of the published ones not being AT-specific. Professionals often use self-made tools to fill this gap. Conclusion: There is a lack of evidence-based AT-specific methods for the selection process. The development of comprehensive, easy to use tools for the selection of AT is recommended. The purpose of this study was to compare both the spatial and gait parameters under the following conditions: walking without a cane (WAC) and with three different types of canes (single tip cane (STC), tripod cane (TPC), and small base quad cane (SQC)). Nineteen young healthy subjects participated in this study by using the GAITRite® walkway. In the order of WAC, STC, TPC, and SQC, subjects demonstrated significant difference of decreased velocity, cadence, and increased stance and swing time ( p < 0.001), but no significant difference for step and stride lengths ( p > 0.050). Further, using a SQC resulted in a much slower velocity and cadence with more stance time than using an STC or TPC (all p < 0.008), but no such differences were observed between an STC and TPC ( p > 0.05). These results indicate that walking with a SQC could be most stable but least efficient, while walking with an STC could be the most efficient but least stable. Walking with a TPC could be an appropriate choice when both walking efficiency and cane stability are considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose. Approximately, 1 of 12 persons in the world has colour vision deficiency (CVD), named colour blindness. While the amount of graphic information in digital contents is continuing to increase dramatically, assistive tools for colour vision deficiencies remain scarce. Methods. We developed a method to generate customised International Colour Consortium (ICC) colour profiles for patients suffering from CVD, which could adjust graphic contents according to individual needs. Compensation rules for the pale or dark range of red and green colours were established, and an ICC profile was generated using this set of rules. Results. The passing rate for Ishihara test was 99.5% when the generated profile was applied to 10 Ishihara plates and tested on individuals suffering from red deficiency, and green deficiency (5, and 15 participants, respectively). The time used to generate the compensation profile was 12.9 min on average, including the time taken to explain the test to the participants. Conclusion. Reliable results were achieved with a relatively low effort in comparison with methods currently utilised in professional clinics, and does not need expensive instruments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose . To obtain insight into the prevalence of the non-use of assistive technology in The Netherlands. Relationships between non-use and possible determinants were also investigated. The results of the study might lead to improvement of products and of the service delivery system for assistive technology. Method . A study was performed into user satisfaction and the non-use of 14 categories of assistive technology provided by health care insurers. The design was a survey among a stratified sample of users who had received an assistive device, recruited through a sample of health insurance companies. Two independent samples were selected: one in 2001 and one in 2003. Three aspects of non-use were measured. The total number of respondents was 2272. Results . Ninety-two percent of the respondents used the assistive device at the time of the survey. Less than 1% of the respondents never used the device. A majority of the respondents used the assistive device (about) as much as expected and 6% used the assistive device less than expected. Relationships between non-use and other investigated aspects were found. Conclusions . The average level of non-use of assistive technology found in this study is less than often reported in the literature and varies between the various categories of assistive technology. Improving the quality of the assistive technology and the services, and providing assistive technology that solves the users' problem as much as possible, could enhance the use of assistive technology provided. In Sweden, the most common assistive devices are related to mobility. A study was undertaken to evaluate users' opinions on prescription of mobility devices and their satisfaction with devices and services using a cross-sectional design. A random sample of adult users of mobility assistive devices living in three county councils of Sweden was selected. A postal package comprising a questionnaire and QUEST 2.0 was sent out to 400 users of manual wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs, or walkers. Included in the analysis were 208 questionnaires, a response rate of 52%. Most devices were used on a daily basis and satisfaction with the device was high. Satisfaction with the service was scored lower than satisfaction with the device. Follow-up was the single item with the lowest mean score, and 69% of the users reported that they had not received any follow-up. A positive effect especially on users' ability to be active, transport oneself, feel secure, and to take part in social activities was found. Owing to the low response rate the results have to be interpreted with caution. However, follow-up seems to be an area that needs to be improved.
