In her 'Manifesto to Decentre Theatre and Performance Studies' (2021), Swati Arora explores the intangible and invisible borders that function to exclude certain people and knowledges, usually indexed by race, gender, class, and geography, from the academy. As a new working group convenor, I'm interested in thinking through what hidden borders might operate through the Call for Paper and panel selection process. What are prospective panellists really being asked to demonstrate? What unofficial knowledges are privileged and who has access to these? How can we reorient this process towards questioning and away from demonstration of knowledge? In this short provocation I reflect my own experience of selecting abstracts and ask what work might be done to develop a more transparent and empowering model of panel curation. "Global Byzantium" is a book that aims to assess the world from the perspective of Byzantium and its relevance to global history. It challenges traditional barriers and shows that Byzantium's connectivity extended beyond the Mediterranean and European states. The book primarily focuses on documentary analysis and art-historical criticism rather than archaeological investigation. The 14th International Conference on Radiation Shielding and 21st Topical Meeting of the Radiation Protection and Shielding Division (ICRS 14/RPSD 2022) was successfully held in Seattle, Washington. The 5th International Conference on Behavioral Addictions was held in Cologne, Germany, April 23–25, 2018. It featured one of the largest concentrations of papers on pornography and sexual research presented in a single venue to date. Several key themes emerged from the conference. The theoretical basis for developing pornography and sexuality studies as components within the behavioral addiction research landscape is beginning to mature. Core components are the I-PACE theory and the development, validation, and employment in field studies of a steadily growing set of assessment tools including the Problematic Pornography Use Scale, the Brief Pornography Screener, and the Hypersexual Behavior Inventory. The field also benefitted from a keynote speech and a formal pro/con debate. The other principal debate was around the imminent release of ICD-11 by the World Health Organization and the way that Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) would be handled. There was a selection of papers looking at the debate from a variety of theoretical and practical points of view. Fieldwork from Poland suggested that well over 80% of people seeking treatment for CSBD had a problem with pornography use, rather than issues from acting out with real sexual partners. Never has the LRN conference been hosted in two consecutive years by the same host university and never has the conference been delivered online. Every odd year from 1969 through 2019 - and then in 2022 on account of the COVID-19 pandemic - a select group of mathematicians, physicists, engineers, and computational scientists calling themselves transport theorists gathered for one week at what was originally called the Blacksburg Conference (now known as the International Conference on Transport Theory [ICTT]). Building on the legacy of the three previous conferences since 2013, the 2017 International Conference on Behavioral Addictions (ICBA) offered one of the largest selections of original academic research into compulsive sexual behavior and pornography use ever presented. This review gives a flavor of the best papers and the key contributions to our fast-evolving understanding of compulsive sexuality and pornography use. This report is not fully comprehensive as the use of parallel sessions meant that we could not see all relevant papers. The Journal of Behavioral Addictions has published all abstracts in a special edition (volume 6, supplement 1). A single strand of the parallel sessions was wholly dedicated to research into sex and pornography. Taken collectively, the presentations demonstrated the strengths of several national research teams, in particular those from Germany, Poland, Hungary, Israel, and the United States. The plenary given for the sexual strand by Matthias Brand explored the I-PACE model (Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution) in specific Internet addictions, including for cybersex addiction. The significant proliferation of research papers in both conferences and journals has made it difficult for researchers to easily access relevant scholarly papers for academic learning. This has been a substantial problem for many researchers. Conferences, in comparison with journals, have an aspect of social learning and networking, which leads to personal familiarisation through various interactions among researchers. In this paper, we improve the social awareness of conference participants by proposing a novel folksonomy-based paper recommendation algorithm, called socially aware recommendation of scholarly papers (SARSP). SARSP recommends papers issued by active participants (APs), to other Group Profile Participants at the same conference based on preference similarity of their research interests. In addition, SARSP computes the social ties between an AP and other conference participants to effectively generate social recommendations of scholarly papers. We evaluate our proposed algorithm using a real-world data-set. Our experimental results confirm that SARSP has significant improvement over other existing methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study tests the hypothesis that the contributed papers at the 12 ACRL national conferences do not cover topics of interest to technical services librarians in proportion to their membership in ACRL. The analysis showed that 14.66% of contributed papers dealt with subjects that were part of the charge of ALCTS, the technical services division in ALA, and its five sections. This percentage dropped to 7.52% with the removal of collection development papers that are also of high interest to many public services librarians. Current overlap statistics indicate that 18.83% of ACRL members also belong to ALCTS-an indication of potential ACRL member interest in technical services topics. An unexpected discovery was that the contributed papers became much more holistic with the arrival of the Internet and electronic resources in academic libraries and, starting with the 1999 Detroit national conference, were much more difficult to categorize into specialized niches. The author speculates that the attendance at the national conferences by a high proportion of librarians from small to mid-size academic libraries discourages papers on technical services topics since technical services librarians are more likely to work in large ARL libraries. This paper critically assesses current architectural research, as represented in a sampling of papers presented at ACSA conferences, through the lens of research typologies related to people-place interactions taken from neighboring fields in the social sciences. Specifically, 253 papers from four ACSA conferences were assessed for methodological approaches to their objects of inquiry. This resulted in a tabulation of all the papers into nine methodological categories, ranging from interpretive approaches to causal-experimental approaches to design projects. These nine categories are critically evaluated in light of extant people-place research frameworks from the social science literature. The paper concludes by suggesting that established social science frameworks can help clarify the architectural research realm, particularly in the "interpretive" range, and that "design" offers a unique venue within which sociological approaches such as critical theory and/or grounded theory can find expression. When states face international terrorism, their response almost automatically lies in the area of foreign policy. As such, actors in foreign policy making play a key, yet understudied role in this process. In this paper, I will therefore analyse West German foreign policy responses to Palestinian terrorism in the 1970s, which evolved from technical to diplomatic measures. The focus will be on the role of diplomats, not least on their sustained and expanding efforts to negotiate with representatives of violent Palestinian organisations after terror attacks affecting West Germany. This paper thereby shows the potential of a more actor-focused counterterrorism research agenda. Moreover, from a methodological standpoint it also illustrates how archival material can help to uncover the internal dynamics and complexities of governmental decision-making when it comes to counterterrorism. A new classification system for computing education papers is presented and applied to every computing education paper published between January 2004 and January 2007 at the two premier computing education conferences in Australia and New Zealand. We find that while simple reports outnumber other types of paper, a healthy proportion of papers address and answer a research question. We find that more papers deal with programming courses than with other courses, and that more than half of all publications are situated in single subjects. To the extent that differing circumstances permit, we compare our results with those of an earlier study of the SIGCSE conference, and find that the Australasian publications include fewer simple reports and more papers describing analysis and experiment. We note a reasonable number of publications on multi-institutional work, which we interpret as evidence of a sense of computing education community within Australia and New Zealand. It is our pleasure to present this special issue ofHeat Transfer Engineeringwith a selection of papers presented at the 4th International Symposium on Heat Transfer and Energy Conservation, ISHTEC2012, held January 6–9, 2012, in Guangzhou, China. The conference was sponsored by the Key Laboratory of Enhanced Heat Transfer and Energy Conservation of Education of Ministry of China. More than 160 delegates including 42 foreign delegates from 16 countries came to the conference and there were more than 140 papers presented at the conference. The topics covered a wide variety of fields from new heat transfer theories, to micro heat transfer, to enhanced heat transfer technologies and the heat transfer problems in energy use systems. This special issue is a selection of the best 21 papers presented at the conference, including 2 review papers and 19 full-length research papers. The analysis of these papers showed that there are new trends in recent years in heat transfer and energy conservation: (1) New heat transfer theories are actively proposed to optimize heat transfer problems. (2) New alternative energy use technologies are being extensively investigated to meet the desire for a low carbon society. (3) Even for the seemingly traditional processes and equipment, new phenomena and findings are continuously disclosed, during which computational fluid dynamics has been more and more relied on. Early educators contributed papers on encouraging literacy and communication in young children. Shelton K. Gilyard Jr. of the University of South Florida in Tampa presented a paper on the use of interactive video gaming to encourage children with autism to participate in physical activity.

Central Michigan University has hosted 11 Off-Campus Library Services Conferences since 1982. This paper studies the proceedings of the 11 conferences to identify patterns of research. The authors were interested in determining how the field of distance learning library services has changed over that 22 year period as evidenced by the topics presented and the types of papers included in the proceedings. The authors analyzed the contributed papers and assigned those papers to specific subject tracks. The authors also considered the sources used by the presenters in order to identify works that may be considered seminal in this field. Distance learning librarianship is a field that has grown and matured, but there has been little research to date into the core literature of the field. The increasing availability of high quality digital texts and usage data about them provides opportunities to identify new uses for collections, alternative ways to present and explore content, and expanded audiences for the materials. Using this information and a rapid development model called a “flash build,” JSTOR is creating and partnering with other organizations to build new tools that add value to library investments in digital collections. Two examples are discussed: “Classroom Readings,” a tool designed to help educators find articles on JSTOR that are good candidates for teaching, and “Understanding Shakespeare,” a resource created in collaboration with the Folger Shakespeare Library that enables scholars to follow links in lines from Shakespeare plays to articles on JSTOR that reference them. This editorial provides an overview of a special issue dedicated to the 7th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, HEFAT2010, which took place July 19–21, 2010, in Antalya, Turkey. All papers for this conference were peer reviewed and almost 150 papers were accepted. Of these papers, eight were selected for this issue and were peer reviewed for a second time according to journal standards. This introduction outlines the background and contexts of this special issue of Studies in Travel Writing, which emerged from the Borders and Crossings 2019 conference held at the University of Leicester on 4–6 July 2019. The introduction details the history of this long-running conference series, and its previous role as a source of travel writing studies publications. As the conference organisers, the authors explain the rationales which guided their development of the 2019 conference, in particular an emphasis on bringing critical and creative approaches into the same space, and encouraging presenters and attendees from a wide range of backgrounds. The introduction briefly considers the likely significance for travel writing practice and scholarship – as well as for the Borders and Crossings series itself – of the COVID-19 pandemic, and provides a brief summary of the selection of articles, based on papers originally presented at the conference, included in this issue.
