Five years ago, we reviewed the state of memorable message scholarship in communication, with special attention to the utility of memorable message research in health communication. Since then, works advancing the theoretical and practical applicability of the construct have continued to emerge. In this article, we discuss the trends in published memorable message research over the last five years. Since 2017, thirty-four additional peer-reviewed articles focusing on memorable messages as a central concept have been published. Health communication as a subset of the field (as well as the journal Health Communication) see a higher concentration of these publications than other areas. In this review, we concentrate on the use of theory within recent memorable message work. Although much of the memorable message research continues to be atheoretical, more work utilizing control theory, the theory of memorable messages, and communicated narrative sense-making characterize the recent literature. Additionally, more research has emerged that highlights the theoretically driven investigations about the nature of memorable messages. This paper aimed to explore the differences in subjective experiences of intoxication depending on drinking location and drink type. Methods: Data came from 32,194 respondents to The Global Drug Survey (GDS) 2015, an annual, cross-sectional, online survey. Respondents selected their usual drinking location (home alone: home with partner/family: house parties: pubs/bars or clubs) and usual drink (wine; beer/cider/lager; spirits or alcopops/coolers). They indicated how many drinks they required to reach three stages of intoxication (feeling the effects; an ideal stage of intoxication; and the tipping point) and how frequently they reached each stage. Results: Drink type affected grams of alcohol reported to reach the tipping point: 109 gm wine, 127 gm alcopops, 133 gm of beer, and 134 gm of spirts. Respondents who drank at home alone, or in clubs reached their tipping point more frequently compared to other locations. Conclusions: Where people drink, and the type of alcohol they drink, affected the amount of alcohol reported to reach different stages of intoxication. Understanding why different drinking locations, and drink types lead to a need for greater consumption to reach an ideal state of drunkenness, such as social cues from other people who drink, may enable people to reduce their drinking. The current study assesses how characteristics of medical marijuana use are related to general health status and past year change in health. An analytic sample of 312 patients were recruited from 16 medical marijuana dispensaries across Los Angeles, California. Patients completed a short intercept survey and a longer patient survey. Surveys asked information about health, marijuana use behaviors, preferred ways to use marijuana, marijuana recommendation, and sociodemographic information. Data were analyzed using hierarchical linear modeling of patients nested within dispensaries. For general health status, patients who smoke marijuana, have more medical conditions for which they received their medical marijuana recommendation, and use marijuana more times per day report lower levels of general health. The number of days using marijuana per month was related to worse health in the past year. Medical marijuana use does not appear to improve overall health status according to the results presented here, but is limited by the cross-sectional nature of the study. As the legalization of medical marijuana use continues to grow across the United States, identifying how marijuana is related to health will allow physicians to better determine who may benefit from its use. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) women exist as a population with an increased complexity in the relationship between themselves and their sexuality. For the LGBTQ community, sexual behaviors are often silenced or erased. This exploratory qualitative research examines 186 memorable messages that emerged from 91 LGBTQ women and gender minorities who participated in a national study. Each participant was asked to share memorable messages they received about sex, sexuality, and sexual health. Consistent with past research, "advice" was a common memorable messages form; however, negative attributes and media-derived messages emerged. The study objective is to assess why official statistics give the impression that Norway has low levels of innovation compared to other Nordic countries. The author examines innovation practices in Denmark and Norway to demonstrate that this is not the case. The results reveal that official statistics are misleading and that Norway has a high level of innovation but spends relatively less on scientific research. A further finding is that in Finland and Sweden innovation is heavily based on science and technology, whereas Denmark and Norway are clearly more pragmatic and base their innovation more on a ‘doing, using, and interacting’ (DUI) post-science, technology, and innovation (STI) approach. Additionally, in Denmark systems are led by small and medium-sized enterprises, whereas in Norway they are led by large enterprises. The author discusses the explanations for such differences in national and regional ‘innovation systems’ among countries that appear to outsiders to have a lot in common. He concludes that, by contrast, the ‘insiders’ are aware that they are quite distinctive societies that are evolving notably divergent developmental pathways. A key and probably controversial conclusion is that in the contemporary post-specialisation and post-cluster era the DUI systems have advantages over the STI-led ones. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Teacher feedback is critically related to student learning. This study sought to determine the relationships between distance education (DE) student level of self-regulated learning (SRL) and their preference for audio-recorded vs. written feedback from tutors. DE students (n = 102) enrolled in a first-year university course completed an online questionnaire that assessed eight dimensions of SRL as well as a personal evaluation of written vs. audio-recorded tutor feedback that was provided during the academic study period. In general, the participating DE students expressed preference for written over audio-recorded feedback. However, complex patterns of relationships emerged between dimensions of SRL and evaluation of written vs. audio-recorded feedback. For example, DE students who were most likely to listen to audio-recorded feedback appreciated peer interaction and personal challenges more than students who preferred written feedback. In DE learning environments, a variety of feedback formats may best meet the needs of all students, although exposure to various technologies may facilitate SRL. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstinence for most adolescent-aged college students relates to several factors, including strong religious beliefs, an aversion to taking risks, high career expectations, or limited attractiveness. Young adults receive hundreds of messages from various sources; therefore, understanding their memorable sexual messages is essential. This exploratory research uses an interpretive method to unravel the memorable sexual narratives of 65 virgin respondents. Findings yield two primary themes: involuntary abstinence, and conscious abstinence, which demonstrate that messages of abstinence are important yet often imbue punitive internal attitudes and beliefs derived from mainstream media and peer relationships. The article concludes with a recommendation for health practitioners and communication scholars to create positive open spaces where young adults can discuss sexuality, sexual relationships, and sexual behaviors. Additionally, understanding stigmas related to abstinence helps reframe normative sex communication messages and promote constructive short- and long-term sexual health behaviors. This study compared the reading gains of Kindergarten students who were at risk for reading failure who were taught with either a structured supplemental reading program or with teacher-designed or teacher-selected instruction. The authors used a quasi-experimental design with preexisting groups to examine changes from pretest to posttest. Although both programs were effective in producing statistically significant improvements in word attack and phonemic awareness skills, results revealed a pattern of moderate differences favoring a structured supplemental program called the Early Reading Tutor. Furthermore, anecdotal information from questionnaires suggested that participating tutors who used Early Reading Tutor would recommend it to others and considered it an effective yet simple program to implement. Background: The quality of medical student and resident clinical evaluation reports submitted by rotation supervisors is a concern. The effectiveness of faculty development (FD) interventions in changing report quality is uncertain. Aims: This study assessed whether faculty could be trained to complete higher quality reports. Method: A 3-h interactive program designed to improve evaluation report quality, previously developed and tested locally, was offered at three different Canadian medical schools. To assess for a change in report quality, three reports completed by each supervisor prior to the workshop and all reports completed for 6 months following the workshop were evaluated by three blinded, independent raters using the Completed Clinical Evaluation Report Rating (CCERR): a validated scale that assesses report quality. Results: A total of 22 supervisors from multiple specialties participated. The mean CCERR score for reports completed after the workshop was significantly higher (21.74 ± 4.91 versus 18.90 ± 5.00, p = 0.02). Conclusions: This study demonstrates that this FD workshop had a positive impact upon the quality of the participants' evaluation reports suggesting that faculty have the potential to be trained with regards to trainee assessment. This 2005 study compared parent-child attachment in 89 American female Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOAs) as compared to 201 non-ACOAs. Women attended a large university in the southeastern United States. Participants categorized as ACOA on the Children of Alcoholics Screen Test (CAST; Jones, 1983) reported significantly more negative affect and less support from their fathers as indicated on the Parental Attachment Questionnaire (Kenney, 1987). When results were examined by the gender of the alcohol-abusing1 parent, participants who suspected their fathers were problem drinkers did not differ from non-ACOAs in their attachment to either parent. As compared to non-ACOAs, women who self-identified as daughters of problem-drinking mothers reported poorer attachment both to mothers and fathers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Development management owes an unacknowledged debt to colonial administration, specifically to indirect rule. Development management, as opposed to development administration, has newly adopted a specific set of managerialist participatory, methods, to achieve 'ownership' of development interventions. These methods are particularly evident in World Bank/IMF implementation of Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) and Comprehensive Development Frameworks (CDFs). They have their conceptual foundation in action research, invented, it can justly be argued, by John Collier, Commissioner of the US Bureau of Indian (ie Native American) Affairs 1933-1945. Collier was a self-proclaimed colonial administrator, and remained an advocate of indirect rule as late as 1963. Evidence is presented to show his development of action research was a tool of indirect rule. Achieving 'empowerment' through participation was at its very beginning, therefore, subject to the colonialist's asserted sovereign power; and the limited autonomy it granted was a means of maintaining that power. This report describes a new method of custom making cranial titanium plates for the repair of skull defects. We have combined 3D CT imaging and surface modelling with rapid prototyping (RP) technology to produce physical models of our patients' skulls from which custom titanium plates were made. We have expanded the use of image processing tools applied to the CT image data to fabricate a representation of the skull defect. Medical RP models are relatively expensive and particular attention has been paid to developing image processing methods to reduce costs. Our technique used the patient as their own model and generated data from the contralateral side of the head where appropriate. We present the results of 10 patients who have had a custom made cranial titanium plate fitted and discuss the models for these cases. The benefits of our custom made titanium plates are reduced patient attendances to hospital and a more accurate titanium plate which has improved fitting and cosmesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The contributors to this special edition of Studies in European Cinema were all participants in the second annual meeting of the European Cinema Research Forum at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth in January 2002. The aim of the conference was to debate and analyse the tensions between European cinema and its 'others' both within the context of European culture and beyond. This has subsequently given rise to a British Academy Networks Project entitled `Screening Identities: Reconfiguring Identity Politics in Contemporary European Cinema', which is currently investigating the relationship between film-makers within the European Union and those on its eastern and southern borders. However, in this present volume one can explore what transpired to be a main focus of the conference: namely European film culture's parasitic, conflictive and at times romantic relationship with Hollywood. Hollywood has had a profound effect on the history of European cinema and vice versa. In the 1920s and 1930s, United States was a magnet for the cream of Europe's film industry and a refuge for many seeking exile, the immigration of European directors.
