Enhancing allocation efficiency is vital for maintaining China’s position as a leading textile producer. The adoption of information and communication technology (ICT) can improve the efficiency of farmers’ input allocation. Nonetheless, limited evidence exists regarding the impact and extent of farmers’ access to digital agricultural extension through subscribing to agricultural WeChat public accounts (WPAs) on allocation inefficiency costs. Using a 2019 farm household survey of cotton farmers in Xinjiang, this paper employs a primal system model to calculate farmers’ allocation inefficiency costs and a two-stage residual inclusion approach model (2SRI) to estimate the effects of agricultural WPAs subscription on allocation inefficiency costs and allocation inefficiency. The empirical findings indicate that the average allocation inefficiency cost is 3.264 Yuan per kilogram, constituting 45.8% of cotton production cost. Our results demonstrate that subscribing to agricultural WPAs can significantly reduce farmers’ allocation inefficiency costs by 19.5% and decrease allocation inefficiency by 0.079. Consequently, promoting smallholder farmers’ access to digital agricultural extension serves as an effective strategy to enhance allocation efficiency and lower costs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is an ambitious, contentious, and world-spanning project. Using Chinese Communist Party (CCP) documents, this paper examines one of the stated purposes of the BRI: to address regional inequality between China’s east and west, focusing upon Xinjiang. Through an analysis of regional economic data, the demographics of Xinjiang and Xinjiang governing bodies, and a case study of the Chinese steel industry, this paper shows that the BRI has so far failed to check increasing regional inequality in China and that job opportunities for local communities in Xinjiang are constrained by social and political factors. In the process of mineral deposits formation, elements often show abnormal enrichment. Therefore, the inversion of element contents (the prediction of element contents in mineral deposits through hyperspectral data) has some indicative significance to the exploration of mineral resources. In order to solve the problem of nonlinear copper contents inversion using hyperspectral remote sensing, this paper put forward an improved Gradient Boosting Regression Tree (IGBRT) method to invert copper contents. The main innovations of this paper are: (1) replacing the simple average function with the k-nearest-neighbour weighted average function as the node prediction function to improve the accuracy; (2) using the adaptive reduction step instead of the fixed reduction step to improve the efficiency. At the end of the paper, taking the Altun region, Xinjiang province, China as the experimental area, the iron element which was high correlated with the copper was chosen as the intermediate variable, and the contents relationship between them was established to solve the problem of the small number of copper samples in the study area. Using the improved Gradient Boosting Regression Tree method to predict the iron contents, then the copper contents could be predicted through the relationship between them. The results showed that the IGBRT algorithm had the coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.744, which were 0.185 more than the traditional one, and the learning efficiency was increased by 39.4%. The results of this study can provide a reference for remote sensing inversion of copper contents in mineral deposits of uninhabited areas, and have some important significance for the delineation of copper prospects. In recent decades, Xinjiang's municipal government has enacted a series of religious policies with the overt aim of combatting religious extremism, but which increasing numbers of Uyghur activists, scholars and human rights NGOs assert are discriminatory, serving as a vehicle for religious repression and the cultural assimilation of the region's Uyghur and other Muslim minorities. Within this context, this paper will consider the applicability of international human rights law in protecting the Uyghurs' cultural identity as a religious minority. However, any attempt to do so remains stymied as China has yet to ratify the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the sole human rights treaty of the United Nations that contains a provision dedicated to freedom of religion or belief for all. By exploring the applicability of cultural rights as a protection of the Uyghurs' religious identity, this paper will highlight how the UN's evolving definition of culture ensures that Article 15 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights provides one of the broadest protections for minority rights within the core human rights instruments of the United Nations. GM crops, as a widely researched and applied biotechnology, hold significant strategic and practical implications for promoting the commercialization of GM crops in China, driving agricultural industry upgrading, and fostering economic and social development. However, despite their potential benefits, the commercialization of GM crops in China has been consistently delayed. Therefore, this study aims to explore the trust relationship between the government and the public in the field of genetically modified organisms and the heterogeneous impacts generated at the production and consumption ends. We primarily focus on insect-resistant cotton and genetically modified papaya as representatives and base our research on survey data from Xinjiang and Guangdong. By employing factor analysis and establishing multiple Probit models with government trust, crop purposes, and farmer expectations as independent variables, and the commercialization of GM crops as the dependent variable, we conduct two sets of empirical analyses. The study finds that government trust has a more significant impact on consumer concerns about whether to consume GM products than on producers, who prioritize farmers' desire for agricultural product profitability. Age and education levels also influence the public's acceptance of planting GM crops, but the effects are not as significant as the core variables mentioned earlier. Based on this, we conclude that consumers and farmers have different positions and contradictions in the specific scenario of delayed GM commercialization in China. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has become the most important vehicle for Chinese cooperation with Central Asian member states and Russia. China seeks to play an active role and exert strong influence in the SCO for both economic reasons and strategic considerations. China aims to resolve territorial and border issues with Central Asian states, maintain stability in Xinjiang, develop the economy of western areas, and ensure energy security by playing a leading role in the SCO. Analyzing China's role in the SCO and the related opportunities and challenges is the primary goal of this paper. The Chinese government uses economic cooperation to exert influence within the SCO. However, the Chinese government must still overcome numerous challenges, including reconciling mistrust and conflict among SCO member states, reducing Russian suspicion of Chinese intention, response to transformation of the SCO, and dilemmas regarding regional instability. Yingpan, Xinjiang, was an important site on the Silk Road of China. A large number of precious objects with exquisite patterns have been excavated from this site, and they provide valuable physical evidence for the study of the cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world. The conservation methods applied to a pair of cloud pattern-painted boots excavated in Yingpan, Xinjiang, are introduced in this paper, and the various factors influencing the repair process are explained. The results show that an oil-in-water emulsifier with contaminant removal and antibacterial functions effectively softened the hardened and deformed ancient leather. The use of near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) to evaluate the dosage of the softening agent can prevent excessive use of softening agents on historical leathers. A silk crepeline method was used to influence the physical reinforcement of the boots without affecting their appearance. It improved the fiber strength of the ancient textiles. There are abundant oil resources in Xinjiang, and the exploitation of oil resources could easily pollute the soil. In this paper, the impact of oil pollution on permeability of the gray desert soil affected by freeze-thaw cycles under a dry and cold climate of Karamay region in Xinjiang was studied. First, varying-head infiltration tests were conducted on soil samples with different water contents and pollution intensity without exposing to freeze-thaw cycles. The variability of permeability were analyzed employing the scanning results of the polluted soil samples by an electron microscope. Then several freezing and thawing cycle tests were implemented on the samples. The test results shown that the soil permeability was optiomal and the permeability coefficient was highest when the crude oil pollution intensity was 0.61% and the water content was 15.53%. With the water content in soil samples being the same, the soil permeability coefficient increased in the beginning and then decreased as the pollution intensity increased. When the pollution intensity ranging from 0.5% to 1.75%, the freezing and thawing condition could be the leading factor affecting the soil permeability. However, when the oil content was within the range of 1.81% – 2.41%, the freezing and thawing condition could not be the leading factor affecting the soil permeability. The results provided in this study could serve as a relevant basis for the remediation of soil pollution in oil production plants in arid areas of Western China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Economic investment and the growing immigration of Han Chinese from other parts of China to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region over the last three decades have increased the presence of eastern Chinese architecture in the urban built environment. This paper refers to the making of, residing in and speaking about the materiality of urban architecture by Turkic-speaking Muslim Uyghur middle-class actors. Besides creating personal comfort through Uyghur elements they draw ethnic boundaries to the Han Chinese. In highlighting the materiality of architecture, the analysis expands beyond the individual house by investigating the ways in which urban architecture offers spaces of meaning for social and ethnic communities. Based on ethnographic data, this paper argues that due to the political context and the state-controlled urban development with Chinese characteristics, urban Uyghur architecture was relegated from the outside of houses to an emphasis on interior decoration. This paper examines the inter-group difference in social leverage ties between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in Ürümchi, China. Social leverage ties refer to high-status ties such as professionals and managers who can provide egos with information or access to education, training, employment, etc. Existing studies have suggested three hypotheses (i.e. retention of culture, homophily and neighbourhood poverty) for the mechanisms of ethnic differences in network composition. Based on the survey data the author collected in 2005, this paper suggests another main mechanism – state policies – in explaining the ethnic variations. State policies have led to in-group association and ethnic inequalities, which have limited Uyghur access to high-status individuals. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emission mitigation has recently been a critical policy-making concern in the financial area. To address this concern, we examine whether and to what extent financial development reduces CO2 emissions in China from a spatial dependence and heterogeneity perspective. The empirical results of applying a random effects eigenvector spatial filtering (RE-ESF) model and a RE-ESF with non-spatially varying coefficients (RE-ESF-SNVC) model to a provincial panel dataset over the period 1997 - 2017 indicate better goodness-of-fit due to the consideration of spatial effects. The role of financial development in mitigating CO2 emissions is confirmed at both the global level by using the RE-ESF model and the local level by using the RE-ESF-SNVC model. Moreover, the contributions of financial development display clear regional disparities, suggesting the inclusion of spatial heterogeneity when developing financial policies for CO2 emission mitigation. However, such contributions are restricted by financial constraints which increase CO2 emissions globally and locally, requiring a balance between financial development and financial constraints when expanding bank loans. Additionally, the one-way analysis of variance reveals the existence of a geographically dividing line approximately connecting the easternmost tip of Xinjiang and the easternmost tip of Fujian. It is observed that provinces above the line generally have stronger impacts of financial development on carbon emission reduction, while impacts in provinces below the line are generally weaker. These findings encourage the implementation of proactive fiscal and monetary policies to promote financial development. Considering financial constraints, cross-provincial and province-specific financial policies should be balanced when allocating more financial resources to provinces with greater contributions of financial development to CO2 emission mitigation. Recently, reports have emerged that China operates "political re-education" camps of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang. China justified them as a sort of vocational training program to assist Uyghurs in participating in the Chinese economy. In actuality, they are brutal incarceration camps; these forms of 'education' can qualify as torture that perhaps 1.5 million adults have been subjected to, and have led to detaining children of people incarcerated in state-run boarding schools. It is necessary to interrogate the underlying factors that have enabled the Chinese government to open and operate these camps under the guise of education. This paper first examines the impact of the current geopolitical interests of China's Belt & Road Initiative and the historical backgrounds of Xinjiang and the Re-Education through Labour program. It then explains the methods of 'education' taking place within the camps and interrogates China's justifications for building them. The 5 July event in Urumqi inspired rethinking about Beijing's policy towards Xinjiang. This paper will examine Beijing's interests in Xinjiang from historical, political, economic and security perspectives, and the challenges Beijing faces in pursuing and protecting its interests. By examining the tensions between the Han and ethnic minorities, especially the Uyghurs in Xinjiang, the paper argues that the Xinjiang issue involves China's core interests and the most serious challenge Beijing faces is how to cope with ethnic tension in a highly sensitive region surrounded by big powers. The tumultuous events of summer 2009 have brought Uighur protests and minority mobilization in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (XUAR) to the forefront. But this focus overlooks similar protests organized by various groups of Han Chinese settlers over the years. This paper contributes to the body of literature on minority mobilization and ethnic relations in Xinjiang by illustrating how the political mobilization of a group that is simultaneously a national majority and a regional minority differs substantially from ‘traditional’ minority mobilization. Reviewing the main instances of Han Chinese political mobilization since the XUAR was created in 1955, I argue that two factors are particularly important in enabling their mobilization: the Han Chinese's subjective perception of discrimination and their close ethnic ties to the state. This paper attempts to identify the variables that define the political and social boundaries within Xinjiang's multi-ethnic society. Traditionally, ethnicity has been the point from which scholars examine political and social loyalties in Xinjiang. It is proposed here that, while ethnicity is a crucial component in defining the divisions in Xinjiang society, it is also important to consider the role of language. This latter trait cuts across ethnic lines and is responsible for creating important subgroups within established communities. The paper will demonstrate that while the Uighur Min kao Han are ethnically Uighur, they culturally and linguistically have taken on many ethnic Chinese characteristics. They are favoured for admission into Chinese society and receive political and employment advantages over their co-ethnics who remain linguistically/culturally Uighur. However, these advantages do not always materialize and the social costs are high. The Min kao Han are generally excluded from the Uighur community, while simultaneously enduring discrimination from the Han. It is argued here that the history of the Min kao Han , as well as the trends in Chinese politics and society affecting this group's future development, are key to understanding what their current role is and will be in the future. It is clear that the psychological condition of the Min kao Han is largely the result of their isolated position in Xinjiang society, and of their experience as children in Han classrooms. It will be shown that there is potential for this group to lead the Uighur population into conflict with the Han, but also, and more importantly, for them to help facilitate reconciliation. Background:Students’ daily-life experiences may render favorable effects on the students’ affective domain like interest, enthusiasm, motivation, joy, curiosity, awareness, and eagerness to learn science as not commonly found in the classroom environment. However, no rigorous research has been reported on those aspects in Mainland China despite many recent studies done in various Western countries. Purpose:This paper aims to report and compare the science-related experiences of ninth-graders from two places (in Urumqi City of Xinjiang province and Shanghai) in China through a large-scale survey of their junior secondary three students. Sample:The sample consists of 4115 students in Urumqi City (from 28 schools) and Shanghai (from 25 schools). Design and methods:This study adopted a Likert scale questionnaire instrument, as translated from the international Relevance Of Science Education (ROSE) Project. From a confirmatory factor analysis of the data, we identify and focus on six factors which are directly correlated with students’ science-related experiences outside school environment in Xinjiang and Shanghai and employ relevant factor scores to compare the gender, regional, and socioeconomic effects. Results:As revealed by thet-test, gender and regional differences were statistically significant in affecting (1) students’ outdoor living experience, (2) hands-on experience of transportation, and (3) their daily-life experience with do-it-yourself tools and models. In all three aspects, boys and Xinjiang students possessed richer experiences than girls and Shanghai students, respectively. Conclusions:Based on ANOVA tests, Shanghai students’ out-of-school science-related experiences were more often significantly affected by various socioeconomic variables (including their parents’ education and occupation and their family income) than Xinjiang students. From cross-regional comparison, Chinese students had much fewer science-related experiences than those of Greek and Finnish students. Since the Soviet breakup, rural communities in the Kazakhstan–China borderlands have faced cataclysmic social, economic, and ecological transformations. Collective and state farms have been replaced by precarious smallholder agriculture suffering from a decline in financial inputs and the deterioration of infrastructure. At the same time, dynamic transformations of border permeability (and trans-border reconnections) between Kazakhstan and China have challenged the until relatively recent widespread Soviet rhetoric on Western China (or rather Xinjiang) as an underdeveloped space across the border. This article is based on several months of fieldwork between 2019 and 2021 in Panfilov District, located at major cross-border road and railway intersections and hosting important infrastructural objects, such as a dry port, a major railway transhipment hub, and a trans-border special economic zone. The article explores how the border situation (and the border's changing permeability for people, commodities, and ideas since the early 1990s) as well as the implementation of new trans-border infrastructures eventually shaped local discourses and practices in the socio-economic development of south-east Kazakhstan's agricultural sector. It is scrutinized herein how various forms of trans-border socio-economic interactions (although heavily regulated) and China's (agri-) economic policy in Xinjiang started to affect farmers' ambitions and practices across the border. While the topic of Xinjiang has received considerable attention from scholars in the recent years, there has been a lack of scholarship on policy proposals for what should be done there to improve the situation for the Uyghurs. Moreover, and even though the literature on democratization in China is plentiful, Xinjiang scholars have not fully engaged that literature in their writings. Likewise, scholars on the topic of democratization in China have not devoted adequate attention to Xinjiang, focusing instead on China overall. His paper argues that the best approach for the Chinese government in bringing about lasting and sustainable peace in Xinjiang is through adopting a combination of competitive democratic elections to be held throughout Xinjiang and fostering political openness through participatory democracy in Xinjiang, the People's Republic of China (PRC). However, with the massive influx of Han into Xinjiang following the founding of the PRC, tensions between the Uyghurs and the Han have exacerbated significantly. Denying Uyghurs basic freedoms such as speaking their own language and going to the mosque further adds to the tensions and is not a viable policy. Thus, in order to improve the situation in Xinjiang, it is essential that Uyghurs are engaged in the democratic process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Qingbulake mafic complex hosting a copper-nickel sulfide deposit, Tekesi County, West Tianshan (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region) consists of pyroxene diorite-gabbro, olivine gabbro-pyroxenite, pyroxenite-olivine gabbro, and clinopyroxene peridotite. The geochemical study presented in this paper indicates that the complex is characterised by low Ti, depletion in Nb and Ta, enrichment in LILEs and slight enrichment in light REEs. These geochemical characteristics, combined with isotope systematics, suggest that the formation of the complex may be related to the subduction of the South Tianshan oceanic plate beneath the Central Tianshan plate and their collision and that the magma could be derived from a depleted MORB-source mantle. The magma underwent weak hybridisation with the crust and country rocks during its emplacement. SHRIMP U-Pb dating of zircons in pyroxene diorite samples from the Qingbulake complex yielded a concordia age of 434.4 ± 6.2 Ma, indicating that the complex was emplaced in the early Silurian (Llandovery). The features of island-arc magma shown by the Qingbulake complex were probably induced by the subduction of oceanic crust beneath the depleted mantle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper argues that Beiijing's handling of the Xinjiang and Uyghur issues at the domestic, regional and international levels is characterised by a number of contradictions. Domestically, the July 2009 unrest suggests that China's longstanding approach to Xinjiang is at risk of failure due to the contradictions inherent in the logic that underpins Beijing's strategy. Regionally, Beijing faces a contradiction between its growing influence on the governments of Central Asia and the ambivalent attitude of Central Asian publics towards China. Internationally, the major implication of the July unrest has been to signal the internationalisation of the Uyghur issue whereby it has become a significant irritant in Beijing's relations with a number of major Western states, including the USA and Australia. It has been Beijing's own approach to Xinjiang domestically and its handling of the Uyghur issue in its diplomacy that has contributed to the internationalisation of the issue. An oasis is not only the most concentrated area of human activity in an arid area but also the largest area where artificial disturbances occur at a regional scale. The study of oasis urban expansion and related factors is important to understand the development of cities in arid areas, guide the evolution of rational urban expansion and promote sustainable development of oasis cities. Although there have been several studies on urban expansion in Xinjiang over past decades, a lack of quantitative data and methods impedes further research. In this paper, urban expansion of the studied area in 1990, 2000 and 2007 is evaluated using 39 Landsat satellite images, a geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS). We also analyse the related factors of urban expansion using quantitative and qualitative methods. We found that economic development and the area of the urban administrative region greatly effect urban expansion. Too rapid growth and outward urbanized expansion paradigms should not be applied blindly in arid areas from the point of view of sustainability. Historic-geographic features of oases and urban planning influence oasis urban morphology. Compact urban morphology is relatively better for protecting precious water and arable resources, and reducing ecology damage to the surrounding oasis. The relationship between urban expansion and population growth was not coordinate before 2000, and effectively only improved after that date. City growth should be moderated, with lower elastic coefficients, slower expansion and higher elasticity coefficients. In 2000, the Chinese Communist Party established the Xinjiang Class (Xinjiang neidi gaozhong ban), a program that funds middle school-aged students from Xinjiang, mostly ethnic Uyghur, to attend school in predominately Han populated cities located throughout eastern China. This paper examines the efficacy of the Xinjiang Class in promoting ethnic unity and Chinese nationalism. By examining the extent to which Uyghur students participating in the Xinjiang Class interact with Han students; speak Chinese outside of the classroom; and by considering if these Uyghur students are returning to Xinjiang, I argue that many Uyghurs are resisting integration, and the Xinjiang Class is largely failing to promote ethnic unity between Han and Uyghurs. The statement that Xinjiang is an integral province of the People's Republic of China (PRC) is not as banal as it would first appear. The primary question that arises from this statement is how - by what processes and strategies - was Xinjiang brought to its contemporary situation as a province of the PRC? This paper seeks to highlight that, although Xinjiang's history since the eighteenth century has been one of great turbulence and dynamism, underlying continuities in both the practice of Chinese power and perceptions of Xinjiang impact profoundly on contemporary China's rule of Xinjiang. Therefore, this study attempts to chart the transition of the Qing goal of territorial incorporation of the region based upon a system of indirect rule c.1760 to the post-imperial Chinese state's goal of territorial incorporation based on the extension of direct, modern strategies of government and control. Monitoring and estimating potential snow disasters in pastoral areas of northern Xinjiang Province are important for decision-making in hazard reduction and prevention. In this paper, four scenes of NOAA/AVHHR (Advanced Very high Resolution Radiometer) images were combined with ground observation data in the north of Xinjiang Province to establish a model for monitoring snow depth. Using a linear spectral decomposition method, the pixel-based snow coverage and snow classification were studied. The spatial characteristics of snow, grassland, animal and climate factors were used to develop two new quantified indices for estimating the potential snow hazard grade and for integrated evaluation of snow disasters to grassland animal husbandry. The criteria for snow hazard grade and snow disaster evaluation were established. Results indicated that: (i) a pixel-based index K1, based on grassland yield, animal capacity, utilisable grassland area coefficient and seasonal grazing utilisation scenarios, can be quantitatively integrated to reflect the grassland capability of resisting snow disasters; (ii) the snow hazard index (K) systematically expresses the spatial and temporal changes of grassland and snow cover, and analyses, and predicts and evaluates the snow hazard grade under conditions where climatic and animal husbandry information may be unavailable during snow disasters. This index plays an important role in studies on early warning of snow hazard in pastoral areas; (iii) the integrated snow disaster evaluation index (E) and related classification criteria reflect the details of snow disaster magnitude in temporal and spatial scales, which provide the basic information for dynamic monitoring and integrated evaluation on snow disasters in pastoral areas. This paper examines the relationship between spectral indices (the normalized difference vegetation index [NDVI] and photochemical reflectance index [PRI]) and the photosynthetic capacities based on chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm ) of moss-, lichen- and cyanobacteria-dominated biological soil crusts collected from the Gurbantonggut Desert, Xinjiang, China, based on a liquid-water hydration experiment. While no photosynthetic activity was detected for dry crusts, hydrated crusts showed significantly higher Fv/Fm values than dry crusts. A significant correlation between the PRI and Fv/Fm was found in moss- and lichen-dominated crusts, and the determination coefficients were higher than those between the NDVI and Fv/Fm . China often treats this issue exclusively as a sovereignty matter and refutes outside criticism. What is the viable explanation of China's position? The conformational behavior of the capsular polysaccharide obtained from a fast‐growing soybean‐nodulating rhizobia (strain B33) isolated from Xinjiang Autonomous Region (Eastern China) has been analyzed by NMR and molecular mechanics simulations. This polysaccharide has the repeating unit →6)‐4‐O‐Me‐α‐d‐Glcp‐(1→4)‐3‐O‐Me‐β‐d‐GlcpA‐(1→. The NMR results indicate that the α‐(1→4) linkage may adopt a variety of conformations, and that at least two of the resulting minima must exist in solution. NOE data agree with an 85:10:5 ratio for the lowest‐energy conformations. In the case of the β‐(1→6) linkage, NMR indicates that the rotamer gg is highly populated. Experimental and calculated NOE intensities match well when the global energy minimum conformation for this linkage has exclusively the gg orientation. The influence of the adjacent methyl group on the glycosyloxymethyl population has been evaluated by simulation of a disaccharide without this group. A relative destabilization of gt rotamer has been found. Long chains have been simulated using a Metropolis algorithm at different ratios of the gg and gt rotamers in the glucose moiety. The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) is a largely Muslim area in the far northwest of China. In area it is the largest province-level unit in China, accounting for about one-sixth of China's total area. The most populous ethnic group is the Uygurs, after whom the XUAR is named. The Uygurs are Turkic ethnically and culturally, and strong adherents of Islam. In the north of Xinjiang there is a large Kazak population, adjacent to Kazakhstan. Since the middle of the 20th century there have been many immigrants from China's dominant nationality the Han. The People's Republic of China (PRC), like its imperial and republican predecessor states, places a very high premium on national unity. All attempts at secession have been suppressed immediately and brutally. In fact, the great majority of these attempts at secession have taken place either in Tibet or Xinjiang, both of which the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regards as integral parts of China. For a variety of reasons separatist movements have strengthened since 1990 in Xinjiang. This is despite persistent efforts by the government to crush any secessionist tendencies in all the minority areas. Actually, separatist movements appear to have impacted more heavily on Xinjiang in the 1990s than on any other part of China, even including Tibet. The year 1996 saw an intensification in the government's attempt to suppress separatism, in particular with a major meeting in Ürümqi early in May, at which the problems were aired and a counter-strategy identified. The main aim of this paper is to enquire into the causes for the increase in separatism. It concludes that there is a combination of various reasons for this growth. Most of them are long-standing, including the strained relations among the various nationalities living in Xinjiang. Direct seeding is a more cost-effective method for plant community restoration than transplanting pot-grown plants, but this method is not applicable to all plant species and all regions. To evaluate the effectiveness of direct seeding to restore mined cold desert vegetation without irrigation, Atraphaxis frutescens (L.) Ewersm., Calligonum junceum (Fisch. et Mey.) Litv., Peganum harmala L., and Seriphydium gracilescens (Krasch. et Iljin) Poljak. were directly sown in the bottom of dry furrows and on a flat site in the mined wasteland before the second snowfall in late autumn. Seedling emergence, survival, and growth were monitored for 3 years. For the four species, cumulative seed germination in the furrows ranged from 6.4 to 23.6% and the highest germination was 23.0 and 23.6% for A. frutescens and C. junceum, respectively. Survival at the end of 3 years was 7.0–56.1% for the four species. In the flat area, cumulative seedling emergence for C. junceum, A. frutescens, P. harmala, and S. gracilescens was 0, 0, 0.7, and 1.4%, respectively, and all seedlings died with the onset of drought. Thus, under natural precipitation conditions, the success of direct seeding depends on the microsite and species. We conclude that direct seeding can be an effective method for establishing the shrubs A. frutescens and C. junceum in mined wasteland if seeds are sown in furrows that have been created across the landscape. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of appendages on the maintenance of viability and germination of the diaspores of the three shrubs Calligonum junceum (Fisch. et Mey.) Litv., Atraphaxis pungens (Bieb.) Jaub. et Spach. and Reaumuria soongarica (Pall.) Maxim. that have high potential for restoration of degraded temperate arid regions. It has been hypothesized that appendages on diaspores of A. pungens, C. junceum, and R. soongarica help maintain seed viability during dry storage at room temperatures and during moist storage in soil outdoors, but they inhibit seed germination. Fresh diaspores of each species were tested for germination; and diaspores with and without appendages were stored in moist soil outdoors in Xinjiang Province of northwest China; and dry diaspores at room condition for 4 months. Viability and percentage of diaspores with and without appendages that germinated during burial were determined. After burial or dry storage, diaspores with and without appendages were tested for germination. Regardless of storage condition, appendages had no effect on diaspore viability of C. junceum and A. pungens but significantly reduced mortality of R. soongarica diaspores by 50%. During burial outdoors, appendages inhibited germination of C. junceum diaspores but not of A. pungens; no diaspores of R. soongarica germinated. After burial, appendages inhibited germination of A. pungens diaspores but had no effect on C. junceum. Appendages had no effect on germination of R. soongarica diaspores after storage in both locations. To use these three species for revegetation, it is recommended that appendages should be removed from diaspores of C. junceum and A. pungens before storage and sowing, but appendages should be retained on seeds of R. soongarica. The Permian Lucaogou oil shales in the eastern Junggar Basin have long been regarded as important source rocks and reservoirs for tight oil exploration. The oil shales can also be used to assess the provenance and tectonic setting of the East Junggar region using major, trace and rare earth element geochemistry. The low chemical index of alteration ratios (37.36–64.18, 45.54 on average), low plagioclase index of alteration ratios (26.99–62.95, 42.99 on average), and high index of compositional variability ratios (0.64–1.66, 1.10 on average) suggest that the Permian Lucaogou oil shales mostly consist of immature sediments that have experienced a weak weathering intensity. The samples have low TiO2/Al2O3 and TiO2/Zr ratios that indicate a felsic origin with minor intermediate igneous rocks. The high Th/Sc and Zr/Sc ratios suggest a felsic origin without sediment recycling. The samples show fractionated light rare earth elements and relatively flat heavy rare earth elements patterns with weak negative Eu anomalies, which implies that the main provenance is lower Carboniferous intermediate–acid volcanic rocks. In addition, multiple major- and trace-element‐based discrimination diagrams show that the parent rock of clastic sediments formed mainly in a continental island arc and active continental margin environment, consistent with previous studies on the tectonic background of the East Junggar region during the late early Carboniferous. Immature sediments are present in the Permian Lucaogou oil shales and have a weak weathering intensity. The provenance of the clastic sediments of the Permian Lucaogou oil shales was predominantly early Carboniferous intermediate–acid volcanic rocks. The clastic sediments of the Permian Lucaogou oil shales were developed in a continental island arc and active continental margin environments. A new perlodid species of Filchneria Klapálek, 1908, Filchneria tianshana sp. n., from the middle section of Tianshan Mountains, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China is described and illustrated based on males, females, and eggs. Another species, Filchneria sp. CH-1, is described based on females and eggs from the same location. Crop classification is a crucial task in agricultural remote sensing, with the accuracy of such classification heavily relies on field sampling. Reusing historical samples can minimize the reliance on annual field sampling for crop classification. Although previous research primarily focused on the classification accuracy based on the reused historical samples, the underlying factors that influence the accuracy have not been adequately investigated. In this study, we employed a two-dimensional convolutional neural network (2D-CNN) model for crop classification reusing historical samples and investigated the factors influencing the classification accuracy. First, we calculated a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series from historical data to characterize crop growth patterns. Secondly, we assessed three different time-series construction methods. Subsequently, we used the 2D-CNN model to automatically extract abstract features of crop growth patterns. Finally, we designed various strategies for reusing historical samples to explore the influencing factors. Experiments were conducted in Kuitun, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China, from 2016 to 2020, employing a long time series of Sentinel-2 images as remote sensing data. Our results indicated that optimal 2D-CNN models using an irregular satellite image time series (irSITS) outperformed random forest models in inter-annual classifications (the overall accuracies for 2016–2020 were 0.78, 0.61, 0.89, 0.89, and 0.70, respectively). In addition, we identified that the primary factors affecting classification accuracy were 1) the time-series construction method used; 2) the crop growth patterns; and 3) the sample diversity. By reusing historical samples and considering the factors influencing classification accuracy, this study provides valuable insights into high-quality crop classification mapping under limited field sample conditions. Northern Xinjiang in Northwest China is an important part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) and is characterized by Fe, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, W, Mo, Au and rare metal deposits. Cobalt is a critical mineral resource and new energy material, but cobalt resources are scarce in China. Many by-product cobalt deposits have been found in the CAOB of Xinjiang. In addition to cobalt-dominant minerals that contain essential Co, cobalt mainly occurs in sulphides, with minor amounts present in arsenic, oxides, and natural metal elements in the form of isomorphic substitutions. Co deposits are mainly distributed in East Tianshan and Beishan, and minor deposits occur in Junggar and West Tianshan. We recognize five types of Co deposits in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt of Xinjiang: magmatic, magmatic-hydrothermal, volcanogenic, skarn, and sedimentary. Of these types, magmatic deposits are the most common. The ore formation in Co deposits can be divided into five mineralization phases: Early Cambrian, Early Silurian, Early Devonian, early Carboniferous, and Early Permian. Among these phases, the Early Permian was the main mineralization phase, in which magmatic-type (Cu–Ni–Co and Ni–Co) and skarn-type (Fe–Co and Ag–Cu–Pb–Zn–Co) deposits formed. The evolution of subduction, collision, and postcollision in the Paleo-Asian oceanic plate resulted in the formation of diverse types of Co deposits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Kuba coalfield in Xinjiang Province is a new block for the development of coalbed methane in China, and in order to explore the resource potential the coal reservoir pore-fracture system characteristics need to be researched, and favorable reservoir selection needs to be carried out. To characterize the physical properties and the pore-fracture system of coal 4 sets of experiments and 2 technologies were performed. The results obtained in this study demonstrated that two coal seams in the Kuba coalfield, namely A5 and A7, are more favorable reservoirs compared with the other coal seams based on the perspective of pore-fractures, and these results provide a theoretical basis for coalbed methane development. Wulungu Lake is the second largest lake and the second largest fishery base in Xinjiang, but there are few studies on heavy metal pollution in water environment. In order to explore the characteristics and sources of heavy metal pollution in the water environment of Wulungu Lake, the distribution characteristics, ecological risks and pollution sources of 8 heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Cd, Zn, Ni, Pb, Hg and As) in water and sediments of 13 sampling points of Wulungu Lake were analyzed. Geological accumulation index method and potential ecological hazard index method show that Hg has a strong potential ecological risk, which leads to a high potential ecological risk in Wulungu Lake. The water quality of Wulungu Lake is good, but we need to pay attention to the health risk of as. Multivariate statistical analysis shows that Cu, Cd, Zn, Ni and Pb in the water body of Wulungu Lake are affected by the discharge of mining or enterprise wastewater. Hg and Cr may come from the use of fertilizer in farmland. Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni and As in surface sediments are mainly affected by regional geochemical characteristics, while Cd, Pb and Hg are also affected by human activities. An assemblage of small, Middle Jurassic tracks from the Xishanyao Formation, located about 100 km west of Urumqi in the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang Province, is here designated the Nanshan site. The site reveals three ornithischian trackways identified as Anomoepus. These represent the eleventh report of the ichnogenus from the Jurassic of China. Two of the trackways show diagnostic hallux traces and indicate bipedal progression. A third indicates a quadrupedal gait. The biostratigraphic distribution of Anomoepus, and Anomoepus-like tracks indicates that they predominate in the Lower and Middle Jurassic of China and are rare in younger deposits. The article focuses on a paper which explores on Han-Uyghur inequality through the comparison of Han and Uyghur migrants at Urumqi, Xinjiang in China. It says that base on a survey of 30 sites conducted in 2008, it is crucial to consider the role of self-initiated migration. It states that through the analyses of migration characteristics, findings show that Uyghur migrants do not seem disfavored compared to Han migrants. Moreover, heterogeneity of Urumqi's labor market is also investigated.

This article adopts a post-Copenhagen approach to securitization theory in order to critically analyze the security policies developed by the People's Republic of China (PRC) that have targeted the Uyghur community in Xinjiang province. The article explores the relationship between the language of security and threat, which has been invoked by the PRC leadership, and its role in justifying every-day and exceptional security practices that have been enacted against the Uyghurs since the start of the 1990s. The article makes two important claims. First, the article argues that the securitization of the Uyghur has proved counter-productive, potentially creating the very security threat that the securitization of an issue is supposed to prevent. Second, the article suggests that the role of various audiences, both domestic and international, even in an authoritarian or illiberal state like China, play a key role in the securitization process and the legitimization of the security measures that have been enacted against the Uyghur community. This article draws on critical scholarship on (counter-)terrorism as well as the authors' long-term fieldwork (conducted in Xinjiang from 2005 to 2017) to explore not only the securitizing agency of the state and counter-securitizing agency of "terrorists" but also the manner in which other societal actors (involving street-level bureaucrats, local Imams, and ethnic inhabitants) interact with these processes in China. This article argues that the practice of security, both in the Chinese province of Xinjiang and across China, has a performative quality to it, which manifests in not merely the official regulations and propagandas, but also the localized responses to their bureaucratic operations in the state project of "stability maintenance." While the "stability"-focused counter-terrorism activities in China involve supplementing the traditional model of retrospective intervention with a performance-based, preemptive approach that allows for more civic participation, the authors argue that the public performance of "stability" and "counter-terrorism" has become a means of professional advancement and/or survival for local cadres. In the unstable geopolitical environment of Xinjiang, where anxious contests have taken place between state and various non-state powers for control over territory, the government has been compelled to constantly seek out potential agents (referring in the present context to local cadres, Imams, and mosques) in order to forge local partnerships as part of the process of implementing counter-terrorism policies. The article examines how local cadres and ethnic inhabitants in Xinjiang, being motivated by their own survival and interests, react to and capitalize on the processes of implementing counter-terrorism policies in local societies, which ultimately challenges the ability of the state to rule and thus leads to unpredicted and unintended counter-terrorism policy outcomes. Research on Uyghur communities in China often focuses on the power and oppression of the Chinese state, neglecting the power situated in the domestic sphere and women's bodies. My research addresses how younger Uyghur women (aged 18–35 years old) feel suffocated by the expectations of their ethnocultural identity, and how those women both conform to and reject social norms. The themes of marriage and clothing illustrate how representations and discourses of the female body reinforce the boundaries of the Uyghur community. The pleasure and pain of Uyghur identity manifests in women's bodies during territorial insecurity of fading nationalist space. Multiple scales of identity in the body and household disrupt the imaginary cohesiveness and boundedness of territory. While the Chinese state polices Uyghur bodies, so too does Uyghur society police the bodies of other Uyghurs – especially women – as a security strategy of bordering the nation. This study provides and tests an integrated model that explores the effect of cultural confidence on residents' spiritual wellbeing and the impacts of spiritual, social and psychological wellbeing on subjective wellbeing. Using Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China as the research site, 356 responses are collected via a field survey. A mixed-method approach is used to conceptualize and develop measures of cultural confidence. PLS-SEM results indicate significant positive relationships between cultural confidence and three dimensions of spiritual wellbeing (such as personal, environmental and communal). Spiritual wellbeing has a strong influence on social, psychological, and subjective wellbeing. Social wellbeing is positively related to psychological wellbeing, which in turn leads to subjective wellbeing. This research proposes and validates an integral framework that explains the development of residents' subjective wellbeing. Formation of a large igneous province, an explosive magmatic event in earth, is intimately related to geodynamic processes. The Tarim large igneous province, a famous representative in China, contains A-type granites. However, the petrogenesis of the A-type granites is debated. Some researchers think that the A-type granites are developed through extensive fractionation of magma derived from partial melting of newly underplated or gabbroic rocks. Others insist that the A-type granites are developed through intensive fractional crystallization of plume-derived mafic magma. Here, we present zircon U–Pb ages and whole-rock geochemical and Sr–Nd isotopic data for the Kezilekezitage, Keziertuo, Tamu, and Halajun II intrusions in northwest Tarim to elucidate their petrogenesis and geodynamic implications. Zircon U–Pb dating yielded crystallization ages of the Kezilekezitage, Keziertuo, and Halajun II intrusions of 275.1 ± 3.1 Ma (MSWD = 1.14), 274.8 ± 1.8 (MSWD = 0.46) and 275.6 ± 0.7 (MSWD = 1.04), respectively. The whole-rock geochemistry of the four intrusions is characterized by REE and HFSE enrichment, Ba, Sr, P, Ti, and Eu depletion, εNd (t) values of – 1.2 to +0.3, two-stage Nd model ages (T2DM) of 1.14–1.02 Ga, and an A1-type granite affinity. Whole-rock zircon geothermometry indicates a high formation temperature of 721–924°C. It is concluded that these A-type granites were generated by partial melting of Neoproterozoic OIB-like rocks, coupled with extensive fractional crystallization and minor crustal contamination. The production of the A-type granites at ca. 275 Ma represented the termination and greatest degree of lithospheric thinning during large igneous province formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR), which mediates the killing function of NK cells, is an attractive candidate for adoptive cellular therapy. The ethnic distribution for China provides a unique opportunity to investigate KIR gene distribution. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between population history and the rapidly evolving KIR genetic diversity. 8050 Chinese donors from 184 hospitals were included to analyse frequency, haplotype, and B-content data of 16 KIR genes, by PCR-SSP for KIR genotyping. KIR gene carrier frequencies were found similar to those observed in other studies on Han, but different from Thais, Japanese, Africans, and populations of West Eurasian ancestry. High-frequency KIR genotype profiles found in the present population were consistent with other studies on Han populations but different from those conducted on other cohorts. The majority of our cohort carried group A KIR gene motifs. Additionally, populations with similar geographic locations in China were shown clustered together, while Hainan and Xinjiang provinces were slightly separated from these. The measurement of snow depth based on temperature brightness with passive microwave sensing is still achallenging problem. Snow depth for the snow cover hydrological model and climate model is asignificant input parameter. Hence, this study concentrates on Inversion Model Assisted Vector Analysis (IMAV) for estimating snow depth in north Xinjiang based on the brightness of temperature. Further, the estimated set of IMAV has been hybridized to address the problem. The results suggested that for both horizontal and vertically polarized PMW radiation the IMAV outperforms SVM at 11.05, 19.6, and 38.4 GHz. If the root mean square error (RMSE) in the IMAV performance is 8 K or below, compared with anormal SVM calculation, then the average over the nine-year study period across the North Xinjiang region of China, the failure correlation coefficient is 7 or greater. Compared with SVM tests, the RMSE was decreased by more than 17% for any of the six frequencies and polarization combinations evaluated, while the anomaly coefficient was raised by more than 50%.Such results suggest that the IMAV is asuperior alternative to the SVM for subsequent use in adata assimilation system as acalculating operator. The purposes of this study were to provide palynological information about apricots and to reveal the relationships among six ecological groups of apricots by describing the morphological characteristics of their pollen. The pollen grains of 175 accessions belonging to three species (Prunus armeniaca L., Prunus sibirica L., and Prunus mume Sieb. et Zucc.) of Prunus were examined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The pollen grains were isopolar monads, radially symmetric, medium to large in size, prolate or subprolate, and 3-colporate. Most pollen grains exhibited striate exine ornamentation, and a few exhibited striato-reticulate or cerebroid exine ornamentation. Cluster analysis divided the six ecological groups into two groups: one including the Central Asian, North China, and Dzhungar-Ili ecological group accessions and another including the Northeast Asian, European, and East China ecological group accessions. Principal component analysis revealed that equatorial diameter, colpus length, colpus width, and ridge width were the most important metrical pollen traits, and can be used as powerful diagnostic characters in apricot identification. We speculated that the cultivated apricots in Xinjiang were domesticated from wild apricots from the Ili Valley. This study describes the morphological characteristics of apricot pollen grains and provides some morphological information for future studies on the phylogenetic relationships of apricots. Caragana shrublands are the main type of vegetation in some cold desert ecosystems in Xinjiang in northwest China, and information on seed dormancy and germination of Caragana species is needed to help restore disturbed areas. Freshly matured seeds of Caragana aurantiaca, C. dasyphylla C. polourensis, C. roborovskyi, C. soongorica, C. spinosa and C. tekesiensis, collected from three natural ecosystems were tested for germination in light at 15/5, 20/10, 25/15 and 30/15 °C after dry storage at room temperature for 1 week and 9 months. Depending on the species, 1–84% of the seeds had physical dormancy (i.e., water-impermeable seeds). At 15/5, 20/10, 25/15 and 30/15 °C, fresh seeds of C. aurantiaca, C. spinosa and C. dasyphylla germinated from 74% to 100%, those of C. soongorica 15% to 52% and those of C. roborovskyi and C. polourensis 13–73%. After 9 months of storage, germination percentages increased significantly over wide range of temperatures for seeds of C. soongorica, C. tekesinsis C. roborovskyi and C. polourensis but decreased significantly for C. spinosa and C. dasyphylla. Most fresh seeds of the floodplain species and desert species are water-permeable and can germinate over a wide range of temperatures; consequently, they could be planted in the field at any time during the growing season. Dry storage of seeds of C. roborovski and C. tekesiensis increased the percentage of water-permeable seeds. Seeds of these species germinate best at high temperatures and should be planted in summer. Over the last decade, the Chinese Communist Party has built an unprecedented surveillant assemblage in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) with the region's Uyghur Muslim minority as the chief target of augmented Party-state controls. It demonstrates how Party-state monitoring comes not only in the form of physical monitoring and forced kinship but also automated, technology-driven tools such as GPS tracking, voice and facial recognition technologies, machine learning algorithms, and other software and hardware. The Chinese Party-state employs surveillance to delineate 'correct' thought and behaviour among its citizens, and then persuade (through coercion and inducement) self-alignment with Party and Han-defined norms. The results are fewer spaces for autonomous, bottom-up social mobilization by the Uyghurs and other minorities, the abolition of non-Han cultural, linguistic and religious practices, and the erosion of social trust in Xinjiang society. Detailed information pertaining to soil erosion is required to ensure eco-environment protection and economic development for Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and remote sensing and geographical information system technologies are adopted to obtain an accurate distribution of soil erosion. An improved estimation method for wind erosion is developed, which proves to be effective with an overall precision of 87.24%. The proposed model uses six critical factors: number of snow cover days, soil erodibility, aridity index, vegetation fraction, soil crust index, and wind field intensity. Results show that soil wind erosion is widely distributed throughout the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The average erosion intensity is 0.50, which is determined to be a moderate erosion level. The wind erosion intensity increases from a slight level in the western part to a severe level in the mid-eastern part. The mean intensity of soil wind erosion for varying land use types is ranked in descending magnitude of barren or sparse vegetation, open shrubland, grassland, cropland, evergreen coniferous forest, and mixed forest. There are large differences in soil wind erosion intensities among soil types; grassland has severe wind erosion and Luvic Arenosols has the lowest erosion intensity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
