The salience of education for better life outcomes is well accepted, but people with disabilities continue to be underrepresented in higher education. Building on Weedon's approach to the intersection of impairment with socioeconomic factors, this paper identifies the facilitators and barriers encountered and/or experienced by young people with disabilities along their diverse pathways to and through higher education in Sweden. The data comes from longitudinal ethnographic case studies of persons with ADHD. While the findings show similarities in impairment-specific barriers, such as transition and inadequate support available at university, they make even more visible the existing heterogeneity among people with ADHD and the inadequacy of support structures at higher education institutions. Parents, economic security and individual factors, such as ease of learning and belief in one's own capacity, were found to be strong facilitators. ADHD and socioeconomic disadvantage together magnified vulnerabilities and hurdles faced while aspiring to and accessing higher education. The article concludes by highlighting the urgent need for universities to change entrenched structures that perceive students with disabilities as a homogeneous group and disability as an individual problem, in order to enable participation of all. This study examined whether teachers' professional development of their relational competence with students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and/or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) modifies teachers' and students' perceptions of their teacher-student relationships (TSR). Participants comprised teachers (n = 33) and students (n = 232) from two elementary schools: one intervention school (InS) and one control school (CoS). InS teachers reported significant TSR improvements, regardless of student group or gender (p =.03). Among InS students, significant results were driven by female neurodiverse (ND) students and neurotypical (NT) male students (p =.03). Nevertheless, positive effects were solely observed among ND female students, while NT male students, conversely, reported decreased TSR during follow-up tests. No significant effects were found at the CoS irrespective of teacher or student ratings. The findings suggest that enhancing teachers' understanding of relational competence concerning ND students will not only improve their own perceptions of their TSR but also those of ND female students. Nonetheless, directing teachers' focus towards one student group (ND students) risks diminishing teachers' attention towards other student groups, potentially explaining the poorer follow-up results among NT boys. The overall aim of this article is to analyse how a school's special needs unit in Sweden deals with children's agency and category work as they negotiate and categorise the problems that are encountered there. The data derive from an ethnographic study conducted in a Swedish special educational needs unit (SENU) attended by a group of five boys aged between 7 and 12. The results show that the teachers' categorisations of the boys' emotional and behaviour problems and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) could be interpreted as an attempt to guide the boys' development so that they will change and improve. Conversely, from the boys' perspectives, the daily activities in the SENU could themselves be problematic in that the boys are obliged to adopt several different strategies to control and strengthen their identity. The aim of the present study was to examine and describe educational leaders’ mindset types related to schooling of students with ADHD in five municipalities with ADHD special education classes and in five pair-matched municipalities without such classes. Selection of the ten municipalities was based on the results from a nationwide survey (response rate 76%) aimed at investigating how Swedish municipalities organise schooling for ADHD students. Interview data was analysed with the use of a theoretical framework presented as a typology table describing mindsets more or less in line with either the neuropsychiatric paradigm or inclusion. The perceived neuropsychiatric influence on ADHD students’ schooling seemed to affect educational leaders’ decision making, leading to different schooling for ADHD students in different municipalities. The findings, presented as municipality profiles, are discussed in relation to the notion of inclusive education and alternative educational paths leading either towards inclusion or exclusion.
