Given that the expectation of the British Educational Research Association Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy Special Interest Group Scholar Lecture is to position yourself throughout the paper, I will start with sharing my academic/career biography, acknowledging that our biographies are inextricably linked to our work and life practices. I will then briefly consider sport pedagogy (SP) as an entity and what we mean by SP, before exploring apprenticeship, academia and administration. It is my intention to provide an honest expression of (i) how I have grown and continue to grow in different phases, (ii) the purpose of each phase in my development and (iii) the related implications that arise for me as a SP scholar and colleague. My focus is on the power we, as individuals and as a community, have to (i) entice and encourage individuals into the area of SP, (ii) to mentor them as they develop as scholars, (iii) to learn from and with them and (iv) to prepare them to become confident, informed and caring individuals with a continued passion for the field. In turn, those individuals who have experienced such a pathway then take on the mantle of starting the process again by enticing and encouraging new individuals into SP. This is very much a thread throughout the paper as I draw on personal experiences from my career as a researcher, teacher educator/academic and administrator, aligned with the concepts of apprenticeship, academia and administration. I draw predominantly on my time as a physical education teacher educator for the past 13 years in the same Irish university setting. My aim throughout the paper is to prompt you to consider your own academic/career development, what ‘phase(s)’ you have/are experiencing and the academic/learning groups you are connected to. This paper presents research findings on practitioners working with young people on Entry to Employment (E2E) programmes in the north of England. E2E continues a long tradition of work-related learning for unemployed school leavers for whom other forms of education or training are deemed unsuitable, and is part of the UK government's strategy for reducing the numbers of young people not in education, employment or training (NEET). The paper explores the biographies of tutors and their routes into E2E teaching. It also discusses the training and development they have experienced, in the light of the expansive-restrictive continuum of workforce development introduced by Fuller and Unwin. By analysing the dispositions, interpretations and actions of practitioners and relating them to wider policy discourses, the paper also examines the learning culture of E2E. It argues that, although they demonstrate significant levels of care, enthusiasm and teaching ability, practitioners operate within a largely restrictive approach to workforce development and learning. The paper concludes that both practitioners and learners would benefit from a re-evaluation of the material and discursive relations under which E2E operates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

War memorials both inhabit and construct complex memorial landscapes. They were often added to pre-existing Victorian, Edwardian, or earlier public spaces and may share proximity with a variety of successive commemorative material cultures. The relationships between war memorials and existing commemorative spaces are most apparent however in churches, churchyards, and cemeteries. War memorials were erected not only in attempts to 'fit in' with these existing and traditional spaces of commemoration, but they also altered and created new spaces, which have determined later commemorative strategies. The importance of the church, churchyard, and cemetery as a focus for the commemoration of the war dead is also reflected in the inclusion of many of the names and biographies of those who died upon family headstones, and with memorial tablets and plaques being erected inside the churches themselves. This paper will draw upon a full range of evidence from a large sample of over 5000 war memorials in Devon, UK, focusing on those found within churches, churchyards, and cemeteries to discuss the shifting dynamics and significance of religious spaces. This paper considers Olive Banks' work on charting the history and development of British feminism, and particularly her use of collective biography as a research and analytic tool. It is argued that while this has been seen as the least 'fashionable' aspect of her work, it took forward C. Wright Mills' contention for one definition of sociology as the interaction between biography and history, and predated by a decade or so similar work on prosopography by Bourdieu from the 1990s onwards. This paper presents the outcome of a preliminary study of the various images of the life course that are conveyed in published obituaries. Following a review of recent developments in the obituary columns of national newspapers in the United Kingdom, we present our analysis of the 86 obituaries that were published in The Guardian in June 1995. We pay particular attention to the ways in which obituaries cover the biography, age, ill-health, death and personal relationships of the deceased. We conclude that, although the sampled obituaries as a whole feature the mid-life careers of men, they also reflect common expectations, fears and prejudices about age, illness and death. We would suggest that a more substantial study comparing obituaries in a wide range of contrasting publications and cultures would reveal important differences in dominant images of the life course. A biography of professor of pharmacognosy Peter J. Houghton is presented. Peter has spent most of his working life at King's College. He was awarded his PhD in 1973 and since 1972 has lectured and undertaken research in pharmacognosy. He was made Professor in Pharmacognosy in 1999 and in December 1994 was designated a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB).

This article traces the biographies of Virendranath Chattopadhyaya, Agnes Smedley and Somerset Maugham to map a global network of Indian nationalist resistance to the British Empire. Maugham and Smedley fictionalized their experiences with the British Secret Intelligence Service and the Ghadar Party, respectively. I analyse the representation of Chattopadhyaya in Smedley's autobiographical novel Daughter of Earth and Somerset Maugham's short story ‘Giulia Lazzari’ to consider the limitations of fiction in the production of historical knowledge of the Indian nationalist movement abroad. The changing face of healthcare in the UK has blurred boundaries and necessitated shifts in working and learning practice. This reflexive account starts to examine what it might mean to learn as a nurse, from the perspective of being a nurse teacher drawing on two different groups of learners. What this might have to say about the profession of nursing as a whole is considered using reflective processes and a reflexive narrative collating various voices and reflective thoughts to illuminate what it means to be a nurse and becoming a nurse teacher. Based on the results of transition studies in the UK, Germany, USA and Canada, the virtues of analysing the structural contexts, institutional arrangements and the young peoples' action orientations are presented. In the first decade of the twenty-first century, school and the labour market have become more and more decoupled and transition routes more uncertain. From a structural perspective, the sorting of school leavers into different transition pathways according to their educational achievements contributes to the reproduction of social inequality. From the actor' perspective, transition uncertainty requires that young adults develop agency (planful and adaptive competence) in order to manage meaningful decisions between alternative pathways to employment. By relating the concept of agency to intuitive rationality and biographical choice, various action strategies are presented that document how young people from different social origins actively pursue individual goals when choosing to follow or to change transition pathways. In contrast to an emphatic reading of the individualisation thesis, comparative transition studies show that only socially privileged and educationally successful youths succeed in transforming their agency into self-reflexive projects. Dame Margery Perham, acclaimed as the foremost academic expert on British colonial administration, also gained much experience and showed much interest in its French counterpart. Her thoughts on this, however, were never published in her lifetime. This article, based her diaries (published posthumously under the editorship of the article's author) and other previously little-known material, reconstructs her views on French colonial rule and how she felt the two colonial services compared with one another. This article is prompted by fieldwork undertaken on the 'Muslims in Prison' (MIP) project from July 2001 to July 2002. In addition to a discussion of general methodological considerations for prison research, the article evaluates key challenges and sensitivities encountered during the project. The points for discussion include issues of access, confidentiality, security, health and ethics. In particular, the article discusses the significance of the researcher's biography—himself a British Muslim—and how these impacted on the qualitative research methods. The fieldwork straddles the events of 9/11, and the article includes a discussion of the impact of this event on the research. The observations will be of interest to researchers of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) prison populations and the changing and developing role of the researcher in secure settings. This article contains the memoirs of Agnes Theodosia Resbury (1858–1943), the fifth of nine children born in Essex, England to Henry Richard Resbury, a tanner, and his wife Sarah Elizabeth (née Cole). Aggie joined the prison service in 1894 and was employed as a warder at Holloway prison during the time when the suffragettes were imprisoned there. Unfortunately, few facts are known about her, but the owner of the memoirs, Jenny Dodge, has written down her childhood reminiscences about her great aunt. The memoirs follow, with endnotes. When the first number of journal "Business History," appeared in 1958, the first words, fittingly, where those of economist T.S. Ashton. The great man did not attempt to justify the study of business history in terms of its contemporary relevance or the magnitude of its potential contribution to historical scholarship. It was enough for Ashton to observe that insufficient attention had been paid in the past to the accomplishments of businessmen, and to note that the intensive study of business records might yield much of value to the parent study of economic history, since it is in the individual firm, rather than in wider organizations, that people can observe the operation of economic forces at first hand. Ashton, of course, shared the view that held sway in Great Britain for so long, that business history was essentially a grass roots approach to economic history, virtually synonymous with company history and business biography. In 1990 business history in Great Britain has reached the stage of vigorous youth, if not maturity. It is a progressive and dynamic subject, full of opportunities. This journal looks forward to participating in the challenges and excitement, which await everybody in the forthcoming decade.

This article provides information on the life of Benjamin Scott Jones, a follower of Owenism and member of the socialist movement known to be "Philadelphus" in Great Britain. During the eight years (1821-9) of his active involvement with Owenism, "Philadelphus" was not identified in print. Upon his submission of an article to the New Moral World in 1837, however, its editor, George Alexander Fleming, named him as "Mr. B.S. Jones." Jones's professional career is entirely accessible, since he remained for fifty years with the same institution, the Home Department (or Board of Control) of the Board of Commissioners for the Affairs of India. Much of Jones's career appears to have been spent with the Secret Department of the Board. Between 1821-9 (with an apparent gap between February 1823 and May 1827), Jones wrote 23 letters and articles for the Economist, (1821-2), the Political Economist and Universal Philanthropist (1823), and the London Co-operative Magazine (1826-30), totaling some 135 pages. Jones never sought to impose his own theology upon any communitarian schemes (unlike John Minter Morgan), though it is likely that he made his opinions clear to Owen,
