Fertility rates in Nigeria are declining at such a modest rate, that if more proactive measures are not employed to reduce fertility, the nation may double its population before long. We empirically examined fertility behaviour as derivatives of specific subgroup social norms, and the variations in the factors responsible for different fertility behaviours, using the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. Descriptive bivariate, and multinomial logistic regression analyses were used to predict the contribution of demographic and sociocultural factors contributing to the fertility level, and findings were reported as odds ratios. Results revealed that age, religion and level of education are the most significant predictors of fertility level, with remarkable differences in birth rate across subgroups, whereas North-West Nigeria had the highest fertility level. Furthermore, marriage had a significantly negative effect on high fertility among North-Western women, whereas higher education significantly increased high fertility among North-Eastern women. In conclusion, subgroup social norms fertility behaviour is responsible for the persistent fertility differential outcome in Nigeria. Ageism is a common phenomenon in the workplace, despite being unethical. Although previous studies have explored the many negative effects of ageism on employees, employee silence has rarely been empirically tested as a negative outcome. Therefore, we explored the positive relationship between ageism and employee silence and its underlying mechanism. A total of 416 working adults completed two time-lagged surveys, with items measuring ageism, work alienation, organizational commitment, and employee silence, administered four weeks apart. The results indicate that work alienation and organizational commitment have serial mediating effects on the relationship between ageism and employee silence. Ageism led to employees experiencing more work alienation, leading to harmful consequences for their organizational commitment and to employee silence. Appearance and voice are essential factors impacting users' affective preferences for humanoid robots. However, little is known about how the appearance and voice of humanoid robots jointly influence users' affective preferences and visual attention. We conducted a mixed-design eye-tracking experiment to examine the multisensory integration effect of humanoid robot appearances and voices on users' affective preferences and visual attention. The results showed that the combinations of affectively preferred voices and appearances attracted more affective preferences and shorter average fixation durations. The combinations of non-preferred voices and preferred appearances captured less affective preferences and longer fixation durations. The results suggest that congruent combinations of affectively preferred voices and appearances might motivate a facilitation effect on users' affective preference and the depth of visual attention through audiovisual complements. Incongruent combinations of non-preferred voices and preferred appearances might stimulate an attenuation effect and result in less affective preferences and a deeper retrieval of visual information. Besides, the head attracted the most amount of visual attention regardless of voice conditions. This paper contributes to deepening the understanding of the multisensory integration effect on users' affective preferences and visual attention and providing practical implications for designing humanoid robots satisfying users' affective preferences. Like other public safety professions, paramedicine has historically been a male-dominated occupation. Although women are increasingly choosing paramedicine as a career, participation in leadership roles remains limited. Drawing on data from a comprehensive mental health survey, we describe the proportion of women in leadership in a single, large, urban paramedic service in Ontario, Canada. We distributed an in-person, paper-based survey during the fall 2019 - winter 2020 continuing medical education sessions. Participating paramedics completed a demographic questionnaire alongside a battery of mental health screening tools. We assessed the demography of the workforce and explored differences in employment classification, educational achievement, clinician level (e.g., primary vs. advanced care), and participation in formal leadership roles along self-reported gender lines. Out of 607 paramedics attending, we received 600 completed surveys, with 11 excluded for missing data, leaving 589 for analysis and a 97% response rate. Women comprised 40% of the active-duty paramedic workforce, with an average of 8 years of experience. Compared to men, women were more than twice as likely to have university degrees (odds ratio [OR] 2.02, 95% compatibility interval [CI] 1.45–2.83), but almost half as likely to practice at the advanced care paramedic level (OR 0.61, 95% CI 0.42–0.88), and potentially less likely to be employed full-time (OR 0.77, 95% CI 0.54–1.09). Women were nearly 70% less likely to hold leadership roles in the service compared to men (OR 0.36, 95% CI 0.14–0.90), occupying 20% of leadership positions. Although paramedicine is witnessing an encouraging shift in the demography of its workforce, our results point to a potential under-representation of women in leadership roles. While educators, curriculum authors and policy makers alike are influenced by assumptions about parents' dis/approval of gender and sexuality diversity, both generally, as well as specifically in relation to this topic's appropriateness for K-12 classrooms, little empirical data is available to support these assumptions. What data does exist suggests that parents generally support the implementation of a comprehensive sexuality curriculum, inclusive of same-sex attraction, and view sexuality education as a school-parent partnership. Surveying a sample of Australian parents of children attending a government (public) school (N = 2093), whose responses were weighted to produce nationally representative estimates, this study sought to expand on previous findings by exploring the complexities of parents' attitudes in relation to gender and sexuality diversity and its place within relationships and sexual health education. This paper provides a descriptive overview of parents' ideas about the purpose of relationships and sexual health education and their views on the importance of including gender and sexuality diversity-inclusive content within related curriculum areas. Notably, over 80% of parents supported the inclusion of gender and sexuality diversity-inclusive relationships and sexual health education topics across primary and secondary government schools. Text-to-speech options on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices are limited. Often, several individuals in a group setting use the same synthetic voice. This lack of customization may limit technology adoption and social integration. This paper describes our efforts to generate personalized synthesis for users with profoundly limited speech motor control. Existing voice banking and voice conversion techniques rely on recordings of clearly articulated speech from the target talker, which cannot be obtained from this population. Our VocaliD approach extracts prosodic properties from the target talker's source function and applies these features to a surrogate talker's database, generating a synthetic voice with the vocal identity of the target talker and the clarity of the surrogate talker. The global COVID-19 crisis disrupted education systems around the world. With the call for vaccination as a crucial step toward educational recovery, it is important to study the intentions of teachers to vaccinate against COVID-19. Thus, this article aimed to examine the intentions of Filipino teachers to vaccinate against COVID-19. A sample of 1070 K to 12 teachers from Mindanao, Philippines participated in the online survey. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that a large majority of the teachers are uncertain about whether they will vaccinate against COVID-19 or not. When looking into the underlying reasons, they expressed that they do not have enough knowledge about the vaccine and are concerned about its potential side effects. The results further revealed that gender, monthly income, and educational attainment were significantly associated with the intention to vaccinate against COVID-19. Lastly, it was found out that a low level of barriers significantly predicted the intention of the teachers to vaccinate against COVID-19. Considering these results, this paper underscores the need for concerned authorities to strategically focus on addressing the persistence of hesitancy by campaigning for vaccine literacy and information resilience so that teachers will vaccinate when appropriate. In a thought-provoking paper, Efron investigated the merit and limitation of an empirical Bayes method to correct selection bias based on Tweedie's formula first reported in the study by Robbins. The exceptional virtue of Tweedie's formula for the normal distribution lies in its representation of selection bias as a simple function of the derivative of log marginal likelihood. Since the marginal likelihood and its derivative can be estimated from the data directly without invoking prior information, bias correction can be carried out conveniently. We propose a Bayesian hierarchical model for chi-squared data such that the resulting Tweedie's formula has the same virtue as that of the normal distribution. Because the family of noncentral chi-squared distributions, the common alternative distributions for chi-squared tests, does not constitute an exponential family, our results cannot be obtained by extending existing results. Furthermore, the corresponding Tweedie's formula manifests new phenomena quite different from those of the normal distribution and suggests new ways of analyzing chi-squared data. In this paper, we investigate robust parameter estimation and variable selection for binary regression models with grouped data. We investigate estimation procedures based on the minimum-distance approach. In particular, we employ minimum Hellinger and minimum symmetric chi-squared distances criteria and propose regularized minimum-distance estimators. These estimators appear to possess a certain degree of automatic robustness against model misspecification and/or for potential outliers. We show that the proposed non-penalized and penalized minimum-distance estimators are efficient under the model and simultaneously have excellent robustness properties. We study their asymptotic properties such as consistency, asymptotic normality and oracle properties. Using Monte Carlo studies, we examine the small-sample and robustness properties of the proposed estimators and compare them with traditional likelihood estimators. Child sexual abuse is a serious social problem. In reports of sexually abused children, victims' narratives often contain elements that suggest the abuse was recorded to create images for child pornography with sadistic, bizarre, or perverted details. The presence of unusual or bizarre elements in the accounts of abused children affects their credibility. The purpose of this paper is to assess the presence and prevalence of these elements in the reports of children with suspected sexual abuse and to examine their consistency with verified cases of child abuse. We conducted two studies. In Study 1, we developed a list of 16 categories of unusual and bizarre scripts reported by children in reports of sexual abuse. In Study 2, we validated the list by examining the presence of the identified scripts in the actual experiences of both individuals convicted of crimes related to child pornography and Italian police officers who were involved with child pornography as part of their official duties. Our findings suggest that children's accounts of sexual abuse should be considered credible even if they contain unusual or bizarre elements that also occur in child pornography and therefore may reflect events actually experienced rather than merely the child's fantasy or imagination. This paper examines determinants of ethnic disparities in workplace risks of COVID-19 among health and social care workers (HCWs) in the UK. This was undertaken to inform public health policy in the management of COVID-19 relating to health and social care provision. A cross-sectional survey was administered in July–August 2020 (n = 456) to elicit HCWs' experiences of COVID-19 management in the workplace and their perceptions of exposure, personal protection against infection, involvement in local clinical management, and other workplace hazards. Findings suggest minority ethnic HCWs were twice as likely as White HCWs to be in a patient-facing role (OR = 2.14, 95% CI:1.21; 3.78, P < 0.01) and twice as likely (63% vs 39%) to be caring for COVID-19 positive patients (OR = 2.68, 95% CI: 1.77; 4.06, P < 0.01). Those in nursing, were three times as likely to be redeployed to a COVID-19 care setting (OR = 3.33, 95%CI: 1.23; 9.02, P= 0.02). Minority ethnic HCWs within lower- and mid-level roles carried a higher burden of frontline clinical management of COVID-19 positive patients than their White counterparts. This study found evidence of ethnic disparities across several workplace hazards, with increased exposure to and less protection against infection, more responsibility for the clinical management of infection, and evidence of systemic racial bias in the disproportionate redeployment of minority ethnic nursing staff to COVID-19 areas. In today's world marketing is an important tool and local preferences based on the social environment can contribute substantially to the media mix. This study is about the issue of the preference of customers of stores, which use local elements as part of their marketing strategy over those who communicate globally. This paper describes the preference of Czech consumers for stores that use local elements as part of their marketing strategy over those who communicate globally. The model, which examines how interest in local activities and specific involvement in local communities' influence consumer preferences, is created by the theory of justified action and the concept of the creation of social networks. The model is tested using data from a representative sample of Czech consumers (CAWI collection) using the analysis of the chi-square test and Spearman's rank-order coefficient. The results show that both interest and specific involvement have a strong connection and relationship with local values. No similar study has previously been executed for the Czechia and this may be an important reason for feasible use in the retail branch. A recent meta-analysis of 164 terror management theory (TMT) papers indicated that mortality salience (MS) yields substantial effects (r = .35) on worldview and self-esteem-related dependent variables (B. L. Burke, A. Martens, & E. H. Faucher, 2010). This study reanalyzed the data to explore the researcher effects of TMT. By cluster-analyzing the authorships of each study, two major TMT research teams were identified, namely, an American team (Team A) and an Israeli team (Team I). The majority of MS experiments were conducted by or related to a small number of researchers (Team A, 50.2%). The average effect size of Team A (r = .41) was significantly greater than that of other researchers (r = .30). Further analysis revealed that cultural differences found in TMT research may be due to the teams themselves, rather than to sample regions. The reasons behind these findings are proposed. Background Students' motivation to participate is one of the main challenges in formative assessment. The utility framework identifies potential points of intervention for improving the acceptance of formative assessment [Van Der Vleuten C. 1996. At the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne, the paper-based version of the Berlin Progress Test has been transformed into computer-based version providing immediate feedback. Aim To investigate whether the introduction of computer-based assessment (CBA) enhances the acceptance of formative assessment relative to paper-based assessment (PBA). Methods In a retrospective cohort study (PBA: N == 2597, CBA: N == 2712), students' overall acceptance of the two forms of assessment was surveyed, their comments were analyzed, and we analyzed their test behavior and categorized students into 'serious' or 'non-serious' test takers. Results In the preclinical phase of medical education, no differences were found in overall acceptance of the two forms of assessment ( p > 0.05). In the clinical phase, differences in favor of CBA were found in overall acceptance ( p < 0.05), the proportion of positive comments ( p < 0.001), and the proportion of serious participants ( p < 0.001). Introduction: For parents who have experienced childhood maltreatment, parenting an adolescent may trigger memories of abuse or neglect, intensifying parent-adolescent conflict. This paper extends an earlier report of outcomes from a pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT) of Tuning Relationships with Music™, an intervention for parent-adolescent dyads where parents have a trauma history and dyads are experiencing conflict, in order to look systemically at dyads' emotion regulation during their musical representation of nonverbal conflict interaction (NCI). Method: The RCT randomly allocated 26 parent-adolescent dyads into intervention or control conditions, and analysed dyads' self-report and observation measures completed at baseline and 4-month post-baseline follow-up. Aims of the current paper were (1) to examine relationships between parents' trauma history, parent-adolescent conflict, parents' reactivity and responsiveness, and dyads' emotion regulation, consistency and predictability during NCI; and (2) whether a systemic music intervention focused on nonverbal communication (NVC) and emotion regulation would change the dynamics of dyads' relational conflict. Results: Higher parents' childhood betrayal trauma and adolescent-reported conflict scores were correlated with predictable NVC sequences whilst dyads were emotionally dysregulated, and parents' reactivity was correlated with dyads' inconsistent NVC during NCI. Post-intervention dyads were more emotionally regulated, consistent and predictable during NCI, reported lower levels of conflict and showed increased parent emotional responsiveness and reduced reactivity. Discussion: Findings indicate that where parents have experienced childhood maltreatment, conflictual parent-adolescent dyads may benefit from intervention focusing on skills that promote emotionally regulated, predictable and consistent NVC during conflict interactions. Health literacy offers an opportunity to effectively direct health information and services to poor and marginalised groups. However, minimal attempts have been made to understand the state and determinants of health literacy, and its association with health-related behaviours among street-involved youth (SIY). This paper explores the status and sociodemographic correlates of functional health literacy (FHL) among SIY in Kumasi in Ghana. It also assesses the relationship between FHL, sociodemographic factors and two of the commonest health-related behaviours—alcohol use and smoking—among SIY. The study purposively sampled 337 SIY, aged 12 to 24 years, from five suburbs in the central business district of Kumasi Metropolitan Area in Ghana. The mean age of participants was 18 years (± 3.3). About 48%, 37% and 15% of them had inadequate, problematic and sufficient FHL respectively. Approximately 37% consumed alcohol and 14% smoked. Sex (female) and ethnicity (Ewe) were associated with inadequate FHL. Also, having some education and having been involved with the streets for three years or more were associated with inadequate FHL. Furthermore, being older, having some education, ethnicity, traditional religious affiliation, being male, having health insurance and inadequate FHL were associated with alcohol use. Smoking was associated with age (being older) and having been involved with the streets for three years or more. The paper argues that relevant health interventions must compensate for the heterogeneity of SIY as regards their FHL and sociodemographic characteristics to curb deleterious health behaviours. The objective of this paper is to expand the level of knowledge about quality costing in current practice. The paper presents a study that was conducted on 186 companies, including both manufacturing and service-based companies. Only companies that are familiar with quality costs (cost of quality, CoQ) were selected for the research. The database of companies for the research was formed using three indicators of the companies’ familiarity with CoQ terminology. A Chi-Square Contingency table was employed in this study, in order to determine whether there was a significant difference between the variables. The results show that there is a high level of awareness that CoQ is relevant, and that there is an increase in the number of companies managing these costs. Variables that affect the method of CoQ management as well as the level of recognition of certain CoQ categories were pointed out. The respondents’ attitude towards the importance of fulfilling individual requirements of ISO 9001:2015 for the adequacy of CoQ management was analysed. In addition, the requirements of this standard which significantly affected the variables defining CoQ management were selected according to the companies’ standpoint towards the importance of their fulfilment for the adequacy of CoQ management. Stigma of mental illness contributes to silence, denial and delayed help seeking. Existing stigma reduction strategies seldom consider gender and cultural contexts. The Strengths in Unity study was a multi-site Canadian study that engaged Asian men in three stigma reduction interventions (ACT, CEE, psychoeducation) and mobilized them as Community Mental Health Ambassadors. Our participants included both men living with or affected by mental illness (LWA) as well as community leaders (CL). This paper will: (1) describe the baseline characteristics of the Toronto participants including their sociodemographic information, mental illness stigma (CAMI and ISMI), attitudes towards social change (SJS), and intervention-related process variables (AAQ-II, VLQ, FMI, Empowerment); (2) compare the differences among these variables between LWA and CL; and (3) explore factors that may correlate with socio-economic status and mental health stigma. A total of 609 Asian men were recruited in Toronto, Canada. Both CL and LWA had similar scores on measures of external and internalized stigma and social change attitudes, except that LWA had more positive views about the acceptance and integration of those with mental illness into the community on the CAMI, while CL had a higher level of perceived behavioral control on the SJS. Group differences were also observed between LWA and CL in some process-related variables. Exploratory analysis suggests that younger and more educated participants had lower stigma. Purpose: Telehealth is rapidly becoming an essential part of speech-language pathologists' core business, and yet the experiences and opinions of community-based therapists in using telehealth remain relatively unknown. This paper describes a recent study in which speech-language pathologists were provided with access to a formal language assessment within a telehealth platform and asked to provide feedback about their experiences. Method: Twenty-seven speech-language pathologists in paediatric practice were recruited via callouts on social media, community contacts and professional networks. The participants were provided access to a telehealth platform with a built-in formal language assessment and asked to use the assessment with their own caseload as clinically indicated and provide feedback after each assessment. Questionnaire data was collected via an online survey system and contained questions about each assessment including the most enjoyable and most difficult aspects of the assessment and their overall experience of the platform. Result: More than 100 assessments were completed during the 3-month trial, with clinicians reporting that on most occasions, video and audio quality was adequate or more than adequate, and that interactions with their child clients were effective. Qualitative data indicated that technical difficulties were a drawback to the assessments, but that ease of use of the assessment, the added functionality of using the assessment within the telehealth platform and factors including general benefits of telehealth, particularly that of being able to continue to provide services when face-to-face work was not possible were seen as positive elements. Conclusion: This study adds clinicians' voices to the research into telehealth, indicating that the assessment within the telehealth platform was generally easy to use, and provided an unexpected depth of insight and connection for clinicians and their clients. Many people overestimate the health risks associated with nicotine, mistakenly perceiving nicotine as the main carcinogen in cigarettes and a leading cause of smoking-related diseases. Health professionals have been calling for public education programs to correct nicotine misperceptions in the hope that a lower risk perception of nicotine could encourage the use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). However, a lower risk perception of nicotine could also lower perceived risk of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). This paper evaluated the necessity of correcting nicotine misperceptions and explored possible intervention strategies to increase use of NRT and decrease use of e-cigarettes. In Study 1, smokers were surveyed about their perceptions of nicotine harm, and attitudes and intention toward using NRT and e-cigarettes. Results showed that overestimation of nicotine harm was associated with e-cigarette attitude and intention, but not with NRT. Informed by the survey results, three correction messages (a nicotine message, an NRT message, and an e-cigarette message) were developed and experimentally tested in Study 2 on both tobacco users and nontobacco users. The nicotine message lowered people's perception of nicotine harm but it did not change attitude and intention toward tobacco product use. The NRT message also failed to influence NRT attitudes and intentions. The e-cigarette message significantly lowered attitudes and intentions to use e-cigarette. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim:The aim of this paper is to verify how cities' demographic rates and Human Development Index (HDI), as well as the birthdate of Brazilian elite soccer players influenced their identification and development. Methods:The sample was comprised of 5,359 players from the Brazilian Serie A Soccer Championship between 2003 and 2019. Players' birthdate and birthplace data were collected, as well as the HDI from their hometowns. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, Pearson correlation and linear regression tests were performed. Results:Results indicated that players born in the first semester of the year, in cities with a demographic rate of up to 100,000 inhabitants and HDI above 0.501, are more likely to play at the highest level (Serie A) of Brazilian soccer. Correlations were observed between birth quartile and HDI (r = −.059; se = 0.04; p < 0.001), birth quartile and demographic rates (r = −063, se = 0.03; p < 0.001), and between HDI and demographic rates (r = 0.458; se = 0.02; p < 0.001). The linear regression method yielded a valid model that included all three variables in this study (F(2) = 9.512; p < 0.001). Conclusion:Based on these findings, it is possible to conclude that birthdate, demographic rate and HDI are important factors in the identification and development of soccer players in Brazil. Technological innovations, especially smart fitness wearables, are playing a critical role in the future of fitness and overall well-being. Extant research has examined the adoption of smart fitness wearables, with limited attention paid to continuance intention. The current study attempts to investigate users' continuance intentions of using smart fitness wearables by combining expectation confirmation theory and social comparison theory. In particular, this paper extends the expectation confirmation model by adding perceived health outcomes and social comparison tendency to understand the continuance intention of smart fitness variables. The model explains 72.8% of continuance intention, and the findings reveal that perceived health outcome and users' satisfaction predict continuance intention leading to intention to recommend. Furthermore, the findings confirm the positive impact of social comparison tendency on perceived health outcome and users' satisfaction. Users' satisfaction is influenced by perceived usefulness, confirmation, perceived health outcome and social comparison tendency. Our study confirms that mere post-adoption perceived usefulness does not guarantee continuance intention, unless the perceived health outcomes are achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has necessitated medical centers across the world to deliver healthcare through telemedicine. We discuss the adoption, delivery of telemedicine services at a tertiary care center and patient satisfaction involving 456 patients in south India. Most respondents had sought telemedicine care at the department of Medicine (16.23%). The maximum satisfaction was reported by patients in OBG (100%). The responses were generally positive across all the age groups. The paper offers insights on best practices adopted at the center, lessons learnt, and provides recommendations for health care systems offering telemedicine during COVID-19 times. This paper identified the training strategies for distance education academic libraries that could improve remote clients' access to information resources during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The positivism research paradigm anchored this study and employed a quantitative approach. Eighty-two (82) online questionnaire was sent to the library staff working in academic libraries that operate in a distance education environment in Gauteng Province of South Africa. The collected data were analyzed with frequency counts and percentages. The hypothesis was tested using multinomial logistic regression statistics. The findings revealed that academic libraries provided training through the library staff to ensure that remote clients cope with the technological advancement facilitated by the emergence of COVID-19. This study recommended that the library staff should consider training intervention in the areas that seem to be neglected, such as identifying information resources relevant to their information needs, introduction to library products and services, and introduction to reference techniques to facilitate the usage and access to information resources by the remote clients. While video games can be helpful in personal development, participating in certain gaming activities may lead to negative effects such as video game addiction. The overuse of computer games, which can lead to reduced quality of life and affect a person's practical skills. Around 3% of adolescents suffer from Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), there is currently no universally accepted psychometric method. The AICA-S scale was applied to results from 3,901 respondents aged between 11 and 19. During the 2017/2018 school year, a battery of questionnaires in "pen and paper" form was administered to students at primary schools and secondary schools. The respondents were selected from all the regions of the Czech Republic through a random stratified selection to ensure that the respondents were an accurate representation of students across the Czech Republic. The results were obtained using statistical methods such as ANOVA, chi-square tests and t-tests. These results affirm the psychometric quality of AICA-S and note the prevalence of IGD among Czech adolescents. Based on our results, 0.8% of our respondents fulfilled the criteria for an IGD. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to understand child welfare investigations that involve child custody disputes in Ontario, Canada. Methods: The study used data from the Ontario Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect. The OIS is a cyclical, cross sectional provincial child welfare study conducted every five years. Characteristics of investigations involving child custody disputes were examined by conducting chi-square tests on key variables, and a logistic regression was performed to examine the influence of child custody disputes on transfers to ongoing services. Findings: In 2013 approximately 12% of child welfare investigations involved a child custody dispute. These investigations were predominantly referred by a custodial parent, and the primary maltreatment concern was exposure to emotional violence. Investigations involving custody disputes when controlling for all other predictors of maltreatment, were less likely to be transferred to ongoing child welfare services. Implications: There is a complicated relationship between child custody disputes and investigations involving intimate partner violence. Policy and practice implications are discussed. In this paper, we used the transtheoretical model of stages of change to study the addictive behavior of smokers, which is a continuum of stages, namely pre-contemplation, contemplation, and preparation, and classify the tobacco users in these three stages to study the differentials and factors determining these stages. This study used the data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS)-2 conducted in 2016–17 in India. Multinomial logistic regression was used to predict the probabilities for different stages according to socio-demographic factors and factors related to tobacco use such as nicotine dependency, information about dangers about tobacco use, etc. Among 9499 smoking tobacco users, 44.73% of users are in the pre-contemplation stage, 46.83% in contemplation, and only 8.43% in the preparation stage. The probability of a smoker to be in the preparation stage for quitting after knowing the dangers of smoking is 0.11. We found a significant association between the stages of smoke and smokeless tobacco cessation and socio-demographic characteristics and the factors related to smoke and smokeless tobacco use. In this paper, we consider the empirical likelihood inferences of the partial functional linear model with missing responses. Two empirical log-likelihood ratios of the parameters of interest are constructed, and the corresponding maximum empirical likelihood estimators of parameters are derived. Under some regularity conditions, we show that the proposed two empirical log-likelihood ratios are asymptotic standard Chi-squared. Thus, the asymptotic results can be used to construct the confidence intervals/regions for the parameters of interest. We also establish the asymptotic distribution theory of corresponding maximum empirical likelihood estimators. A simulation study indicates that the proposed methods are comparable in terms of coverage probabilities and average lengths of confidence intervals. This paper introduces a flowchart-based methodology for describing the movement of foster youth in and out of placements of differing types and durations. This longitudinal methodology is designed to be sufficiently simple to appeal to policymakers and administrators seeking to chart the movement of groups of youth over time and the sequencing of their placements, and sufficiently descriptive to be of use to researchers seeking to predict the placement trajectories of subgroups of foster youth. The paper provides an example of the use of the method drawing upon state administrative data from a large study of preadolescent and adolescent youth in foster care situated in Oregon. In this paper, we introduce a new method for evaluating the inconsistency level of a pairwise comparison matrix. The classical Chi-square index suggests an interesting formal similarity for a consistent pairwise comparison matrix and, as a consequence, a method for measuring the relative deviation of the elicited preferences from a set of consistent preferences defined on the basis of the similarity mentioned above. Contrary to some previously introduced Chi-square-based approaches, no optimisation problems are involved. We verify that the new index satisfies some recently introduced characterising properties of inconsistency indices. Then, by means of numerical simulations, we compare our index with some other well-known inconsistency indices and we focus, in particular, on the comparison with Saaty’s consistency index. We discuss some numerical results showing that the new index is closely related with Saaty’s one but it is more stable with respect to the number of alternatives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GenerateHope (GH) is a San Diego-based 501c3 nonprofit organization providing fully integrated, comprehensive rehabilitation services to adult female survivors of sex trafficking. While best practices for working with survivors of sex trafficking are slowly emerging, to date, there have been few publications on this subject and little data on either short- or long-term outcomes from the many and varied programs nationwide. This paper examines the GH residential program and provides early outcome results for residents living at the GH program between six and 12 months. GH has integrated the types of assistance requested by sex-trafficking victims with clinical insights into trauma therapy, in turn establishing a live-in residence with a 30-hour per week schedule that includes academics, psychotherapy, and adjunct therapies. In this study, GH used three assessments to measure improvements in residents’ overall well-being: Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Checklist - Civilian Version (PCL-C), and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Analysis of the three assessments showed dramatic improvements in the overall participant well-being: Symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) decreased significantly, and self-esteem improved significantly. Findings suggest a program that is replicable, scalable, and transferable to other settings and geographies. Objective: Ethnic newspapers have the potential to reach and influence various cultural and ethnic subpopulations traditionally underserved in the United States. The current study sought to explore how ethnic news consumption interacts with health motivation to predict cancer prevention behaviors in a sample of Spanish-speaking adults.Design: Participants (N = 100) completed a survey in Spanish, with items measuring demographics, acculturation, health literacy, health motivation, ethnic newspaper consumption (for two papers: La Viva and La Raza), and cancer prevention behaviors.Results: Results indicated consumption of ethnic newspapers correlated positively to acculturation, and cancer screening utilization. In hierarchical regression analyses, the interaction of consumption of an ethnic newspaper (La Raza) and health motivation predicted two of the six prevention behaviors assessed: avoidance of fatty foods and screening behavior.Conclusion: The study provides evidence that consumption of Spanish-language newspapers enhances the likelihood that individuals with high levels of health motivation will engage in healthy behaviors. This paper presents a study that tests whether the similarity-attraction paradigm applies to persuasive technology. That is, the notion that similarity leads to more positive evaluations and persuasion of an interactive system was tested in an online study in which participants were provided with automated persuasive messages that had either a dominant or a submissive interaction style. The system with a dominant interaction style was expected to be more persuasive than the system with a submissive interaction style. Moreover, people with dominant personalities were expected to be persuaded more by a dominant system, while people with submissive personalities were expected to be persuaded more by a submissive one. Results showed that the dominant system was more persuasive than the submissive one, but also that the dominant system was perceived as less likeable than the submissive one. Expectations regarding the similarity-attraction paradigm were confirmed for people's evaluations of the system, but not for the system's persuasiveness. While Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) are an important mechanism used to document patient information and service provision, most interfaces prioritize collection of information required for medical billing purposes, rather than complexities of behavioral and social service needs. An emphasis on encounter data renders it challenging for social workers (SWs) to communicate statistically compelling explanations of contributions to team-based care and overall value to the health system. This paper reports outcomes of feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness of integrating a validated psychosocial acuity metric into standardized social work (SW) documentation at a large, pediatric quaternary hospital in the northeastern United States. Approximately 20% (N = 42) of departmental SWs participated in an open pilot trial wherein participants were first trained in scale administration, utilized it for a circumscribed period following training, and evaluated implementation outcomes. Across five unique practice settings, results showed that the metric was feasible, acceptable and appropriate for use; 78% of participants were in favor of integrating it into the EMR interface as a required component of SW documentation. Assessing psychosocial acuity in every documented patient encounter facilitates intermittent review of psychosocial acuity at individual, setting, and programmatic levels and opportunities to evaluate how SW interventions address psychosocial acuity. The main idea underlying this paper is that impairments such as deafness are particularly relevant to the extent that they lead to deprivation of capability. Likewise, the impact of healthcare services such as cochlear implants and subsequent rehabilitation can best be inferred from the extent that they protect or restore capability of those affected. To explore children's post-implant capabilities, we tested two newly developed digital, adaptive child self-report and parent-report questionnaires in 19 deaf children (aged 8–12 years) and their parents during rehabilitation, as well as in 23 age peers with normal hearing. Despite the impressive speech-language results that were recorded with cochlear implants, the post-implant capabilities of the deaf children we evaluated differed from those of their hearing peers, with the cochlear implant group appearing particularly disadvantaged in areas such as accessing information, communication, social participation, and participation in school. Deaf children with cochlear implants who are performing well on linguistic and auditory tests can still experience serious limitations in desired functioning. Our findings suggest that a capability approach may reveal aspects of what is being achieved through rehabilitation that might otherwise remain unnoticed, and that could help to further improve the well-being of our patients. Overall, children with cochlear implants appeared disadvantaged in certain capability areas, like accessing information, communication, social participation, and participation in school. It may be worthwhile to also ascertain capabilities in these children, representing a domain not covered by clinical measures, tapping directly into areas that are valuable to the patient. Stereotype threats have been documented in an academic and work setting and have been found to have a significant impact on an individual's behavior as it could be a barrier in receiving healthcare services. This paper explores the impact of health-related stereotype threats and its influence within a LGBT sample with the use of an online survey to explore underlying and unconscious barriers within mental health services. A series of regressions were used to analyze and explore the potential predictability the health-related stereotype threats may have on the fear of communicating with a physician, delay in mental health services, and poor mental health outcomes. High reports of health-related stereotype threats significantly predicted high reports of fear of the physician which could indicate that many LGBT patients are afraid to communicate with their providers about their mental health due to stereotype threats (F (1,91) = 9.844, p <.005). In addition, high reports of health-related stereotype threats slightly but significantly predicted reported delays in seeking mental health services (χ2(1) = 4.220, p <.05). In addition, although there was no significance related to positive affect scores, health related stereotype threats significantly predicted self-reported poor mental health outcomes (F (1,90) = 4.545, p <.05) and high rates of negative affect scores (i.e., anxiety, depression; F (1,89) = 4.933, p <.05). Dichotomization of continuous variables to discriminate a dichotomous outcome is often useful in statistical applications. If a true threshold for a continuous variable exists, the challenge is identifying it. This paper examines common methods for dichotomization to identify which ones recover a true threshold. We provide mathematical and numeric proofs demonstrating that maximizing the odds ratio, Youden’s statistic, Gini Index, chi-square statistic, relative risk and kappa statistic all theoretically recover a true threshold. A simulation study evaluating the ability of these statistics to recover a threshold when sampling from a population indicates that maximizing the chi-square statistic and Gini Index have the smallest bias and variability when the probability of being larger than the threshold is small while maximizing Kappa or Youden’s statistics is best when this probability is larger. As part of a larger survey, we asked social workers whether they had been involved in medical assistance in dying (MAID) so far. Of the 367 survey participants, 141 reported that they had. These were invited to describe their roles, needs, and sense of competence, focusing on their last MAID experience. Roles were diversified, beginning before and extending beyond the provision of MAID. Nearly 60% needed training on MAID. Perceived competence was lower among those lacking training. Findings point to educational needs that must be addressed to ensure the quality of end-of-life care and the well-being of social workers who engage in MAID. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The notion that you don't have to go to church to be a good Christian is accepted as an indicator of the form of implicit religiosity espoused by those who (in Bailey's analysis) say that they “believe in Christianity.” The present paper builds on the findings of a recently published survey of rural Anglican churchgoers celebrating harvest which suggested that de-institutionalised implicit religion may be superseding commitment to conventional explicit religious attendance. The responses of 1081 people who attended Christmas carol services in two English cathedrals in 2009 and 2010 are analysed. The findings of the previous paper that implicit religiosity is more prevalent among younger people and among those who attend church less frequently are replicated. Evidence is also found that women are more inclined to this view than men and that those who have a loose historical connection through baptism are more likely to endorse it than those with either no historical connections or stronger ones. In this paper, we employ the Dirichlet process in a hypothesis testing framework to propose a Bayesian nonparametric chi-squared goodness-of-fit test. Our suggested method corresponds to Lo's Bayesian bootstrap procedure for chi-squared goodness of-fit test and rectifies some shortcomings of regular bootstrap which only counts number of observations falling in each bin in contingency tables. We consider the Dirichlet process as the prior for the distribution of the data and carry out the test based on the Kullback-Leibler distance between the updated Dirichlet process and the hypothesized distribution. Introduction: Individuals with co-morbid post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and pain have higher disability, pain, and pain catastrophizing beliefs than patients without PTSD. Pain neuroscience education (PNE) may be an effective tool to help those with PTSD and pain reduce maladaptive beliefs about pain. The purpose of this paper is to report the development and evaluation of a PNE curriculum for participants with PTSD and pain. Methods: After writing an initial draft of PNE for PTSD and pain, a panel of medical experts in PNE, PTSD, and rehabilitation reviewed the booklet. After addressing recommendations from the medical panel (n = 29), individuals with (n = 13) and without (n = 20) PTSD reviewed the booklet. Results: Overall, 89% of participants recommended the PNE booklet and 90% thought it would help patients with PTSD and pain. Although patients with PTSD rated the PNE booklet more critically than other participants, a particular support group (n = 4) rated the PNE booklet significantly different (p <.05) than remaining participants with PTSD (n = 9). Individuals with PTSD and pain were able to comprehend the PNE booklet at a comparable rate to an expert medical panel and participants without PTSD after adjusting for education levels (p =.12). Conclusions: Many patients with PTSD and pain avoid painful activities because they believe they are harmful. This research demonstrates that individuals with PTSD and pain can comprehend PNE that challenges these beliefs. Individuals share a diversity of content on social media for a variety of reasons. Research has often described and explained disclosure via the application of a subjective cost–benefit analysis framed around reciprocity, suggesting that people communicate selfishly motivated by the expectation of receiving something in return. This paper investigates the moderating effects of tie strength and interpersonal trust on the relationship between expected reciprocity and intensity of communication between two social media connections. A Facebook application presented participants with a random set of their friends and asked them to rate their friendships in terms of these values. Overall, 90 participants rated 1728 friendships, while the application collected 11 activity variables depicting the actual communication that has taken place in each pair of connections. A principal component analysis was used to distinguish between text- and photograph-related communication, and two moderated multiple regressions were conducted to establish the moderating effects. The results show significant moderating effects of tie strength and trust on the communication around photographs, but not around text. This study contributes to communication research by explicating the ways that tie strength and trust affect patterns of communication on social media. This paper explores the use of withdrawal as a harm reduction approach to adolescent pregnancy prevention and its association with condom use. Data come from a baseline survey of a randomised controlled trial to test the effectiveness of FLASH, a sexual health education curriculum. Study participants completed electronic self-report surveys in health classes in their first or second year of high school (age range 14.1–17.9, mean 15.3 years). One-hundred and ninety-one students (12% of full sample) reported engaging in vaginal intercourse in the 3 months prior to the survey; of these, 66.0% reported using withdrawal as a birth control method, without significant differences by race, gender, region or birth control beliefs. Withdrawal was often used in combination with condoms (55.5%), periodic abstinence (40.0%) and birth control pills (13.4%). The effectiveness of withdrawal and its prevalence suggest an opportunity to reflect on how withdrawal is taught – moving from avoiding its use to a harm reduction approach to help sexually active youth avoid risk, reduce risk and reduce potential harm associated with sexual behaviours. Rather than focusing on withdrawal as risky, youth-serving professionals should acknowledge young people's efforts to prevent pregnancy and recognise the social and relational contexts of contraceptive choices. The multiple layers of exclusion that can be experienced by a child at school and the relationship of this to mental well-being is the focus of this paper. The relationship between specific mental health problems and school exclusion is discussed. Data gathered from 1648 English school-aged students in 2019 who participated in the OxWell school mental health and well-being survey and responded to the school exclusion question will be presented. Ninety-three pupils who self-reported having experienced school exclusion were compared to 1555 pupils in years 8, 10 and 12 who did not report experiencing school exclusion. More males were present in the excluded sample but apart from that the children share similar vulnerabilities for risk of mental health difficulties and risk of exclusion. Of note, a significantly higher proportion of those who had been excluded from school had experienced being bullied at school and reported that they felt their school dealt badly with bullying. They reported relatively good access to mental health support with a higher proportion of those excluded having accessed mental health support than those not excluded. The difficulties identified by the pupils need to be addressed in a variety of ways by school and health systems, and would benefit from the active involvement of young people in generating solutions. The discourse needs to move away from thinking about individuals to broader systems-level approaches to address pupil, family, school and community differences, difficulties and overall challenges of inclusion and acceptance. Background:Substance use disorders (SUDs) impact everything about an individual's life—health, family, employment, education, housing, transportation, and finances. By the time individuals with SUDs begin treatment—especially in publicly funded programs—most have few financial resources. Many have resorted to property crimes, resulting in fines, fees, and restitution costs that compound their financial difficulties. Reestablishing financial functioning is key to recovering from the consequences of addiction. Yet access to cash may also trigger relapses—especially in early recovery. Objective: This paper reports initial results from studies exploring how clients in treatment for SUDs manage their financial responsibilities, assessing their financial capability both in terms of access to financial services and personal financial literacy. Method: Using data collected between June 2017 and October 2019 from almost 5,000 SUD clients as they entered treatment as well as a financial needs assessment study of 70 clients during treatment, we conducted Chi-square testing and logistic regressions to analyze the relationships between client characteristics and financial capability. Results: Our results indicated that over 50% of individuals in addiction treatment did not have access to accounts at insured financial institutions, and that clients' ages and education levels were significantly related to their financial capability. We also found that 78% of clients feel that money management skills are important to their recovery. Conclusions: Many SUD clients in recovery have limited financial capability, and they are interested in developing financial skills. Heart failure is a chronic condition with various implications for individuals and families. Although the importance of implementing palliative care is recommended in best practice guidelines, implementation strategies are less clear. This study sought to; (1) determine Australian and New Zealand cardiovascular nurses and physicians' end of life care attitudes and specialist palliative care referral in heart failure and; (2) determine self-reported delivery of supportive care and attitudes towards service names. An electronic survey was emailed to members of four peak bodies and professional networks. Participants were also recruited through social media. Paper-based versions of the survey were completed by attendees of the 66th Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand Annual Scientific Meeting, August 2018. There were 113 completed responses included in the analyses. Participants were nurses (n = 75), physicians (n = 32) and allied health professionals (n = 4). Most (67%) reported they were comfortable with providing end of life care; however, fewer respondents agreed they received support for their dying patients and one-third experienced a sense of failure when heart failure progressed. Most (84–100%) participants agreed they would refer a heart failure patient later in the illness trajectory. There was a more favourable attitude towards the service name 'supportive care' than to 'palliative care'. Comfort with end of life discussions is encouraging as it may lead to a greater likelihood of planning future care and identifying palliative care needs. Peer support and supervision may be useful for addressing feelings of failure. The use of needs-based assessment tools, adopting the service name 'supportive care' and further research focusing on primary palliative team-based approach is required to improve palliative care access. In this paper, we present a framework to examine the kinds of careers that rural disadvantaged youth would like to know about in a career guidance intervention as also related findings from two different rural disadvantaged contexts in India. Differences across gender, age group, region, and participation/non-participation in youth programmes are also explored. The results validate the importance of comprehensive career needs assessment and provide specific directions for designing and adapting career guidance interventions for rural disadvantaged youth. This paper focuses on the test for homogeneity of relative risk in meta-analysis of count outcomes. Meta analysis of studies with rare events faces particular challenges, since the number of studies are low and the frequency of events may be small in some or all treatment arms. In such a case, the conventional chi-square test for homogeneity becomes undefined and we suggest a new chi-square test which is always defined. However, the chi-square approximation is poor. We therefore introduce methodology to obtain its exact distribution based on the product binomial likelihood. The exact p-value is then derived and the performance of the method is investigated using simulations. The results show that the type I error of the proposed method satisfies the nominal significance level in rare events situations.
