In this commentary on Paul Denis's paper 'The drive revisited: mastery and satisfaction', the author defends the idea of a plurality of metapsychologies that must be contrasted with and distinguished from each other while avoiding incompatible translations between models. In this connection he presents various theoretical approaches to aggression and the death drive, and demonstrates the differences between the drive model and the model underlying the theory of internalized object relations. The author holds that the concept of the internal object differs from Freud's notion of the representation (Vorstellung). He also considers that the imago as defined by Paul Denis in fact corresponds to the concept of the internal object. Lastly, he addresses the complex issue of listening to archaic forms of psychic functioning and their non-discursive presentation within the analytic process, which affects the transference-countertransference link. This paper describes a study comparing paper-based marking (PBM) and onscreen marking (OSM) in Hong Kong utilising English language essay scripts drawn from the live 2007 Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) Year 11 English Language Writing Paper. In the study, 30 raters from the 2007 HKCEE Writing Paper marked on paper 100 scripts that they had marked on screen 9 months previously. Subsequent to the rating, they completed a questionnaire, from which it was concluded that, technologically, raters had no problems with OSM. Statistical results indicated no bias favouring either form of rating. Attitudinal differences surfaced, however, between new raters who had solely rated on screen as against veteran raters, whose previous rating experiences had only been with paper-based rating. The paper concludes with the prediction that as OSM becomes more prevalent, it will be accepted as the norm, with prejudice about fairness or convenience gradually fading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study compared the effects of technological environments with that of the paper-and-pencil environment on reasoning about the concept of derivatives in the context of maximum and minimum problems. The data consisted of clinical interviews conducted with three pre-service secondary mathematics teachers and a newly registered graduate student all of whom had quite a lot of mathematics courses in their repertoire. The study revealed that participants mostly depended on and were limited to analytical reasoning within paper-and-pencil environments, whereas they were able to refer to practical and creative reasoning with the help of the facilities technology environments provided. On the other hand, although participants made progress and used different reasoning types within technology environments, there were cases where they could not move beyond analytical reasoning even within the presence of technological tools. The present discussion paper is the result of a talk reflecting on the author's work as an educational psychologist with a specialist post for autism and working as part of a multidisciplinary pre-school assessment team involved in the diagnosis of autism. The article considers developments in diagnosis over the past 30 years and airs concerns with the widening of the spectrum of disorders; the medicalisation of personality and the paucity of thorough assessment across time and in a range of settings. This paper examines the theoretical foundations of educational psychology from a meta-theoretical critical realist perspective focusing on ethics and values. This examination is considered in light of the increasingly complex educational contexts that require the support of educational psychologists (EPs). It reviews ethics frameworks that have informed ethical practice to date, and reframes this practice within critical realism. This paper presents Fulford's Values Based Practice to strengthen theory and practice to support EPs to resolve ethical issues that can arise. Values Based Practice is presented as a laminated system within critical realism to inform this practice. As a framework, it allows for interdisciplinary practice and the integration of ethical practice, values and the centrality of the child or young person in shared decision making facilitated by an EP in collaboration with other professionals. Through a Critical Interpretive Synthesis (CIS), this systematic literature review explores the role of the Educational Psychologist (EP) in relation to child protection and safeguarding as it has been conceptualised within the research base over time. Key databases were searched and a conceptual map, informed by experienced EPs, guided further purposive searching with a focus on conceptual saturation. 24 papers across multiple areas of child protection and safeguarding work were included. Drawing on wider debates, it is suggested that changing legislative and socio-political climates have resulted in a shift within the research base from 'thinking about doing' towards 'thinking about thinking', where a safeguarding agenda is prioritised and there is less focus on child protection. This paper reports the findings of a systematic review of qualitative research exploring the views and experiences of pupils moving from primary to secondary school in England. The concept of transition is explored before a brief discussion of the policy and legislation surrounding educational transition. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework was used to ensure a systematic search, following which seven papers were identified. These were reviewed and appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklist. Analysis of the literature using thematic synthesis identified key concerns for children who had undergone transition from primary to secondary school and factors that supported this. A key theme highlighted was that of relationships, suggesting this as an area that would benefit from further support. Additional factors including emotions, identity, environment and strategies/recommendations were explored. This review is relevant for professionals working with children who will, or have, undergone the transition from primary to secondary school, and explores recommendations to support this transition. Behaviour supports in schools and educational psychology practices have been largely influenced by the view of human behaviour as individual action. Individual action-focused practices are associated with identifying, labelling and separating individual young people. This paper argues for a relational process-oriented understanding of human behaviour that can lead to more dynamic practices that are responsive to complexity and diversity. This paper explores how a relational lens in practice could shift the conversation from severe behaviour challenges to behaviour as a relational process and generate more collaborative, inclusive and culturally responsive school practices. A growing interest in relationally oriented practices is evident in the increasing use of culturally responsive, restorative, narrative, and solution-focused practices in schools. This paper examines the importance of educational psychology influence on UK Government education policy and school practice between the 1930s and the present time. It focuses on: the lead up to the 1944 Education Act; the 1967 Plowden Report on primary education; the 1973 Bullock Report on literacy; the 1978 Warnock Report on special education; the 1989 Elton Report on behaviour in schools; Every Child Matters, 2003; and on the 2007 Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL). The paper considers the extent that research by educational psychologists may have influenced both the decisions of Governments but also school practice. Recently, computational thinking (CT) has attracted much research attention, especially within primary and secondary education settings. However, incorporating in mathematics or other disciplines is not a straightforward process and introduces many challenges concerning the way disciplines are organised and taught in school. The aim of this paper is to identify what characterises CT in mathematics education and which CT aspects can be addressed within mathematics education. First, we present a systematic literature review that identifies characteristics of CT that have been explored in mathematics education research. Second, we present the results of a Delphi study conducted to capture the collective opinion of 25 mathematics and computer science experts regarding the opportunities for addressing CT in mathematics education. The results of the Delphi study, which corroborate the findings of the literature review, highlight three important aspects of CT to be addressed in mathematics education: problem solving, cognitive processes, and transposition. This document is an editorial summarizing a special issue on teacher well-being. The papers in the special issue cover various aspects of professional well-being, including emotional well-being and professional well-being. The issue also explores the well-being of different groups of teachers, such as teaching assistants and marginalized teachers. The impact of leadership styles on teacher well-being is emphasized, as well as the cultural backgrounds of participants. The special issue also addresses the challenges of teacher well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. The editorial hopes that the special issue will contribute to future research and provide recommendations for educators, school leaders, and policymakers to enhance teacher well-being and improve the overall educational landscape. AbstractIn this paper, we examine traditional psychosocial approaches to the study of student agency in science education, emphasizing the importance of incorporating sociocultural and critical perspectives. We present both contemporary studies of student agency in educational psychology and the work of scholars who study students’ student agency with attention to the cultural, economic, political, and historical forces shaping agentic behaviors in schools. We overview conceptualizations of and evidence for fostering agency among historically marginalized students in science across three major theoretical frames (i.e., psychosocial, sociocultural, and critical). We end by calling for the expansion of psychosocial conceptions of student agency to underscore the role of complex classroom dynamics and to account for the historical exclusion of nondominant communities in science. A test of the effect of scarcity on compliance was conducted in an American classroom setting. The purpose of the manipulation was to examine whether perceived scarcity would affect student compliance in completing written assignments before the due date in order to receive feedback on the papers. The scarcity manipulation did not differentially affect the proportion who turned in written assignments early, but it did have a significant effect on the speed with which these students turned in their assignments. This article discusses a study that examined how pre-service teachers could link academic theories and their teaching in graduate educational psychology courses. A mini-action research project to tutor individual students in the form of 'N = 1 Action Research' (NAR) was assigned in psychological foundation courses required in masters-level teacher education programs. The content analysis of 61 NAR papers found that some of them merely cited psychological theories without linking them to their teaching or were rigidly confined by their scope of the theories. Others flexibly made use of psychological theories to make sense of the varying needs of their students and engaged in critical inquiries into how academic theories could be further developed to encompass the complex needs of their students. This study suggests the need to look into pre-service teachers' relationships to academic theories and help them engage in reflective inquiries into their personal theories and assumptions on teaching. In the Chinese context of Hong Kong, education is seen as important for building character and social achievement. In the dominant social discourse, students encountering school attendance problems are often considered either psychologically dysfunctional or socially deviant, and their parents are viewed as incompetent or irresponsible. With the concrete case example, this paper illustrates how narrative therapy provides a space for students' voices and critical perspectives. It also helps families resist and renegotiate the oppressive meritocratic ideology promoted in the education system and in society. This paper describes a therapeutic intervention within an eco-systemic approach used to support a pupil's return to school following an acquired brain injury (ABI). The outcomes suggest that there were three key facilitative factors during the reintegration back into school. These were: the psychological formulation of the individual's needs and strengths to support a personalised approach to their reintegration; supporting and educating school staff during the individual's reintegration; and one-to-one therapeutic work with the individual. This paper provides some preliminary support for the use of an eco-systemic model when EPs are undertaking therapeutic work in similar cases. However, as this work is based on a single case study, the findings need to be treated with caution. There is a requirement for further research to provide a more robust evidence base in order to determine the use of therapeutic approaches within an eco-systemic approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Are there neurobiological reasons why we are willing to trust other people and why ‘trust’ and moral values such as ‘care’ play a quite pivotal role in our social lives and the judgements we make, including our social interactions and judgements made in the context of schooling? In pursuing this question, this paper largely agrees with claims made by Patricia Churchland in her 2011 bookBraintrust. She believes that moral values are rooted in basic brain circuitry and chemistry, which have been shaped over evolutionary time. However, these naturalistic claims raise important issues, including the standard philosophical objection that they fall victim to the naturalistic and/or deontic fallacies. This paper provides an overview of the neurobiology of trust and examines some of the main objections, in the belief that recognising the neurobiological substrate of care and trust can deepen our appreciation of the role these play in education. Research demonstrates that pupils do not always have the necessary social and emotional intelligence to cope with the transition to secondary school successfully. This paper explores a context-specific intervention designed to enhance key social and emotional skills after a secondary school transition. The intervention was designed with reference to a school-context analysis of children who had recently transitioned to secondary school. Sixty children aged 11–12 years took part in the intervention which involved six group sessions and the outcomes of the intervention were assessed through pre-, post-, and follow-up self-report questionnaires. Focus groups were also conducted with intervention participants following completion of the programme. Findings demonstrate that the intervention had a significant positive impact on empathy. The focus group findings highlighted ways the intervention helped pupils to address negative emotions, cope and manage difficult problems as well as positive and negative implementation strategies for future interventions. The paper highlights a context-specific approach to support programmes, based on the inclusion of an exploratory phase when designing such interventions. 'Co-production' is advocated within UK legislation outlining children and young people's right to be heard and to take part in the development of the services they use. This paper aims to explore understanding and knowledge around engaging with children and young people about how services can be co-produced within education. By using cycles of action and reflection, this research presents what children and young people think is important when working with, and receiving services from, educational psychologists, and explores the experiences of both children and young people, and educational psychologists, as they have worked and continue to work together to co-construct an educational psychology service. Research has drawn attention to the perceptions of some adoptive parents regarding the potential stresses that exist in supporting their child's educational experience. Some adoptive parents have reported a lack of collaborative working with schools, that their adopted child's needs are not well understood and discuss the challenges that this can create for them as adoptive families. The aim of this paper is to outline an innovative approach taken by one local authority to offer support to adoptive parents where issues exist linked to education. The author outlines the development of a support group that is offered to adoptive parents, including the psychological background of the model drawn from psychological supervision systems. The paper also considers the results of action research using appreciative inquiry regarding the critical success factors of the support group, and highlights the value of the EP in supporting work for adoptive families. Prior research on classroom interaction has investigated how the teacher's feedback turn following students' responses can be used to transform students' turns into academic expressions during whole class discussions. Nevertheless, more empirical studies are needed to explore how teachers' translanguaging practices can play a role in shaping students' contributions into pedagogical opportunities for introducing academic terminologies in English-Medium-Instruction (EMI) classrooms. Adopting translanguaging as an analytical perspective, this study explores how an EMI history teacher deploys available linguistic and multimodal resources to connect students' responses with academic concepts and terminologies. The study draws its data from a larger linguistic ethnographic project that took place in an EMI secondary history classroom in Hong Kong. The classroom interaction data is examined using Multimodal Conversation Analysis, and this analysis is further triangulated with video-stimulated-recall-interviews that are analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. This paper argues that the EMI teacher's translanguaging practices facilitate the process of transforming student contributions into academic terminology and concepts. The process of deploying translanguaging for transforming student contributions highlights translanguaging as an important component of the teacher's classroom interactional competence for constructing new configurations of language practices and achieving specific pedagogical purposes. There is growing interest in the role of schools in supporting children facing adversity, including children with refugee and immigrant backgrounds. Based on six months of ethnographic fieldwork (December 2018 to June 2019) and interviews with teachers in two classes for adolescent newcomer refugee and immigrant learners in Denmark, this paper explores teacher responses to everyday dilemmas in supporting and caring for refugee and immigrant learners at school with a focus on three key areas: 1) in relation to teaching while safeguarding the adolescents' self-image, 2) in caring for the adolescents emotionally, socially and physically, and 3) in building trust and being the adolescents' confidants. Based on the findings, we argue that caring for newcomer adolescents cannot be reduced to questions of formal training and technical skills. Rather, it is intimately linked to attentiveness, experimentation and sensitivity to learners' needs. Furthermore, we discuss how scholarly analysis of teacher responses to care-related dilemmas can help generate contextualised insights into the broader support needs of teachers engaging in care work in specific social contexts. Which knowledge and skills would help creative writing students to improve their writing? Writing is a complicated activity that involves the mingling of a great number of social, cognitive, behavioural, environmental, and bodily factors, and an incredible number of these factors have been shown to affect the writing process. One cognitive factor which has significant effects upon the writing process is the writer's motivation to write. In this paper, I review research from motivational and educational psychology in order to set the stage for future research in this area. I review research on nine (or so) motivational constructs which could have positive effects on the creative writing processes of some groups of writers, and I develop some hypotheses that researchers could use to test the veracity of this research. Finally, I discuss some of the ways in which future researchers in the field of creative writing studies could study the effects that these motivations have on the creative writing processes of different writers. To understand how students learn about science controversy, this study examines students' reasoning about tradeoffs in the context of a technology-enhanced curriculum about genetically modified food. The curriculum was designed and refined based on the Scaffolded Knowledge Integration Framework to help students sort and integrate their initial ideas and those presented in the curriculum. Pre-test and post-test scores from 190 students show that students made significant ( p < 0.0001) gains in their understanding of the genetically modified food controversy. Analyses of students' final papers, in which they took and defended a position on what type of agricultural practice should be used in their geographical region, showed that students were able to provide evidence both for and against their positions, but were less explicit about how they weighed these tradeoffs. The role of educational psychologists (EPs) in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people is increasingly being recognised in light of pressures on support services, and the identified importance of school-based provision. At the same time, EP practice has benefitted from psychological practice frameworks which support formulation and decision-making although, to date, none of these has focused on therapeutic work. This paper proposes a flexible, practical model, based on the constructionist model of reasoned action (COMOIRA) and informed by cognitive behavioural therapy, human givens therapy and motivational interviewing. It offers practical guidance and structure for EPs engaging in direct therapeutic work with children and young people, complementing guidance from the Division of Educational and Child Psychology (DECP) on the delivery of therapeutic approaches in school and communities. This paper presents a biographical profile of Alfred Adler aiming to provide a measured overview of the impact of Alfred Adler's work on the theoretical paradigms and research avenues of contemporary developmental psychology. The key concepts of his theory are exposed: Feeling of Inferiority, Strive to Overcome, Style of Life, Superiority Complex and Social Interest. This article outlines his contributions to humanistic psychology and neo-psychoanalysis, his influence on the work of Lev Vigotsky, his key role in establishing the ecological systems models used today in developmental psychology and his educational and public health-oriented approach, which focused on how social context influences childhood development. It also describes the avenues of research he identified in developmental psychology, including the impact of sibling relations on childhood development, the importance of self-esteem and altruistic behaviour. Therapeutic working has long been considered a fundamental part of the educational psychologist's (EPs) role. Yet, little attention has been given to the ethical ambiguity which exists between the terms therapeutic practice and therapy, and the implications this has for practice. This paper starts with a definition of therapeutic practice, identifying three different approaches and exploring the practical and ethical differences between them. It is proposed that these approaches sit within a therapeutic continuum, which presents a range of nuanced, ethical complexities for consideration. Those issues are explored further, with a focus on ethical blind spots (EBS). The paper concludes with illustrative examples of EBS, bringing together dilemmas in initial decision-making along the therapeutic continuum and the practice-based issue of contracting with children and young people (CYP) and how these might be overcome. Growth mindset interventions, initially based on evidence from experimental studies, are widely used in schools internationally. This systematic literature review focuses on the use of growth mindset in primary schools, whether as a bespoke intervention or as an embedded cultural practice, to examine how the approach is operationalised. Six data bases were searched between August 2018 and February 2019, resulting in 131 papers, ten of which were included for methodological quality and appropriateness of focus. Findings indicate that research in this area is generally small scale and a mixture of process and outcome evaluations of whole school and targeted interventions. This review found that growth mindset has been applied across a range of subject areas and as a whole school and classroom intervention. The general issue of children's mental health has become a growing concern in the UK in recent decades. There has been a specific concern about the increased stringency and pressure of formal educational assessments with some students reported as, experiencing high levels of test anxiety. This paper investigated a school-based test anxiety intervention Beating Exam Anxiety Together (BEAT) developed by educational psychologists from Kent EPS and delivered to two secondary (high) schools in the North-West of England for students aged 15–16 years. No comparison group was used, instead single participant cases were observed at two points: one before the delivery of BEAT and another after the intervention. A mixed methods approach was employed to provide a rich account on how the intervention was delivered. Quantitative data from the experimental study, using the Revised Test Anxiety Scale (RTA), show that 13 out of 14 participants reported a reduction in test anxiety post intervention. Qualitative data strongly support the quantitative findings, highlighting that participants feel better equipped to manage their test anxiety levels and feel better prepared to cope in an exam situation. Educational psychologists seek to keep abreast of significant theoretical and practical developments within the field of inclusive education. This paper outlines and discusses Universal Design for Learning as a theory of inclusion, highly applicable for use by educational psychologists. The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework is introduced by exploring the contextual history of its development and explaining the three pillars of the framework; the 'affective networks', the 'recognition networks', and the 'strategic networks'. Application of the UDL framework is demonstrated with classroom-based examples, drawing on existing research. A critical stance is taken towards understanding the current drawbacks of UDL, and direct links to educational psychology practice are made and critically reviewed considering these. Excellence, equity and efficiency are key drivers for improvement in Scotland's education sector, including educational psychology. This paper discusses and evaluates the decisions taken by one Scottish Educational Psychology Service towards achieving the key outcomes of excellence, equity and efficiency through a redesign of their service delivery model. Evidence is presented regarding the impact of this journey towards achieving these key outcomes, and reflections made about the mechanisms which facilitated this process of organisational change and service redesign. This paper states that modern education and utopian discourse share one common trait, that of being structurally founded on the promise of human betterment. The changing relations between concepts of education and utopianism will be developed through conceptual analysis of the dynamics of the promise in their interweaving process. This shall be discussed through three main topics. The first is the appropriation of space in early modern education (sixteenth century onward), with particular emphasis on the influence of print technology on framing a new conception of educational spaces and practices. Second, the promise of the idea of progress in the Enlightenment period, which will become the further technological promise of a society-to-come, no longer spatially but temporally presented. Finally, the promise of autonomy through and against the modern subject, in which such autonomy is presented like the end of the journey through education, supposed that there is an end to such a journey. The key frame uniting the three topics is that utopian discourse journeying towards a normative conception of human society, as well as modern educational schemes journeying towards a normative conception of adulthood, are limited insofar as their respective promises, which are more impatient than the slow project of creation, more than often outruns it. The paper thus inquires whether or not there is a way to uphold the creative and imaginative possibilities of utopia in education, by acknowledging the pervasive effects of the promise on the social imaginary. This paper describes an innovative use of Lesson Study (LS), an internationally used collaborative approach in which teachers develop their teaching knowledge and practices. It aimed to evaluate how EPs join teachers in LS teams, using working memory and other knowledge to inform the teaching of pupils with learning difficulties. The study uses a case study methodology to evaluate LS teams (three teachers and EP) in a primary, secondary and special school. The findings show how working memory knowledge is used in reviewing and planning research lessons, how the teams interact, including the teachers’ perceived EP contribution to the Lesson Study process. The paper illustrates the potential of an inter-professional LS study to embody collaborative reflective practice in order to improve the teaching of pupils with learning difficulties. Departments and programmes in higher education are required to participate in an increasing number of programme, course and student assessments. These assessment requirements are also opportunities to develop student skills related to scientific literacy and research, if students are included in the process of developing, administering and interpreting these assessments. This paper describes a course designed to build student research skills through incorporating undergraduate students into the process of programme review for a psychology department, a comprehensive assessment required of this department every five years. This course proved to be an effective way to engage students, as students developed and administered assessment surveys, analysed and interpreted results, and prepared both a professional report for the department as well as a research presentation. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, attendance difficulties have become an increasing concern for governments and schools internationally. Given that attendance difficulties are often underpinned by psychological and contextual factors, educational psychologists (EPs) are ideally placed to support schools to develop coordinated and informed responses to these difficulties. This systematic literature review investigates the characteristics of systemic school-based approaches for students experiencing attendance difficulties. Eight databases were searched between September 2020 and March 2021, with 12 papers included in the final investigative review. Systemic approaches facilitated by schools were characterised by proactive systems, a supportive school ethos, personalised intervention, and collaboration with families. Interventions informed by these characteristics showed promising outcomes relating to increased student attendance and engagement, however further research is needed. This paper focuses on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), an educational approach where a foreign language is used to teach non-language subjects. More specifically, this contribution presents new insights into an under-researched area, namely the potential of CLIL in fostering the learning and use of subject-specific target language vocabulary (SSV). This is investigated in a case study analysing spontaneous oral classroom productions of two groups of advanced, secondary-school students in an Austrian CLIL programme within the subject European economics and politics. Based on a holistic definition of SSV comprising both single and multi-word lexical units, complementary quantitative lexical and qualitative discourse-embedded research methods are employed to present a comprehensive picture of the engagement of learners with subject-specific vocabulary. Findings of the lexical analysis show a substantial and active use of SSV with some homogeneity but also considerable variation between students. Discursive investigations of the affordances for learning arising in interactions indicate that in constructing and negotiating SSV, the students make use of a range of learning and communication strategies, which indicates their heightened level of SSV learning awareness. Some research studies, many of which used quantitative methods, have suggested that graphics calculators can be used to effectively enhance the learning of mathematics. More recently research studies have started to explore students’ styles of working as they solve problems with technology. This paper describes the use of a software application that records the keystrokes made by students as they use calculators, in order to enable researchers to gain better insights into students’ working styles. The recordings obtained from this software can be replayed to observe how students have actually used their calculator in tackling a problem. The paper describes three pilot studies from quite different contexts, in which the software reveals how the calculators have been used by the students. In all of these studies the software provides insights into the working that would have been very difficult to obtain without the record of the keystrokes provided by the software. This paper examines trust as a fundamental aspect of fiduciary relationships in education. The specific relationship under examination is that of academic employee and university employer. Both have the value of trust assigned to them as an implicit part of their social and professional contract. The setting is Australia, but the principles apply to any democratic jurisdiction and educational level or location, where fiduciary principles are a pre-condition for healthy and trustworthy working relationships. The paper firstly discusses the meaning and application of ‘trust’ and ‘fiduciary’, and considers the codes that regulate fiduciary relationships in education. It then asks what happens if and when the fiduciary duties and obligations are not upheld, advancing that question through an employment law case against an Australian university, for alleged breach of the Fair Work Act (Australia). The analysis shows what may be the outcome when fiduciary trust between employee and employer is breached, how it may happen, and the consequences of this. The aim of the paper is to throw light on the value of trust for robust working relationships in academic life. This paper contends that supporting young people to hold a growth mindset – the belief that intelligence is malleable and within an individual's power to develop – offers a potential psychological contribution to existing educational inequalities in the UK. A role for educational psychologists (EPs) in extending research insights from experiment contexts to real-world educational settings is developed, by critically examining Dweck's intelligence mindset theory in practice: firstly, in terms of key themes and controversies within existent research literature; secondly, utilising an implementation science lens; and finally, through an example of EP involvement in partnership with young people and educators. The understanding accrued permits considerations for a rigorous implementation of growth mindset in schools. These considerations extend beyond much of the existing research about growth mindset at the level of the individual student and utilise the professional expertise and strengths of EPs in seeking to make changes to the system around a child. Involving young people in the co-production of whole-school wellbeing strategies is aligned with the United Nations rights of the child and current UK legislation. This exploratory participatory action research (PAR) project aimed to facilitate teacher-student collaboration in one high school to develop whole-school practice with a focus on assessment. Training videos were co-created focusing on students' assessment experiences and ways to improve wellbeing and performance. Reflexive thematic analysis of the data identified key facilitators and challenges to the PAR process, alongside insights into students' assessment experiences. The paper concludes that PAR has the potential to empower young people and open channels of communication between students and teachers. As scientist practitioners, educational psychologists (EPs) are equipped with the necessary research skills to evaluate both the impact of their involvement and the effectiveness of interventions in schools. An increasing area of priority within schools is supporting young people with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. This paper explores the use of single case experimental designs (SCEDs) as a methodology which can be used to evaluate EP involvement within real world practice. To exemplify this, the evaluation of an SEMH intervention delivered by school staff across four different secondary school settings using a SCED is presented. The challenges and benefits of using a SCED as a research methodology are discussed. The authors conclude that SCEDs provide a flexible and practical method which could be used to evaluate the impact of interventions implemented within typical EP practice. The present paper focuses on the 'emotional regimes' that may be invoked, molded or used in history education engagements with the past as part of reconciliation processes. In the first part, the paper examines briefly how emotions are related to the process of reconciliation and discusses the ways in which emotional regimes grow out of the institutionalization of reconciliation. Then, the paper looks at history education and its relationship to reconciliation through literature that examines the revision of history textbooks. In particular, there is a discussion of three possible options for the revision of history textbooks: separation, harmonization and multiperspectivity. The third part of the paper discusses possible problems with these options, focusing on the emotional regimes that might be invoked through them, particularly in relation to resentment and empathy. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and related approaches are receiving increasing focus from education policy makers and educational psychologists. However, the extent to which ACEs research and theory can be used to inform practice continues to be a topic for debate. The present paper explores the development of ACE-informed practice within two UK local authority educational psychology services, through use of focus groups and interviews with educational psychologists. Rationale, facilitators and barriers to the development of current ACE-informed practice are reported. Implications for educational psychology practice, including consideration of risk and reliance factors, the importance of consistent implementation of approaches, and future research are also considered.
