The treatment of wet archaeological composite artefacts can be a difficult process. It was further complicated in this case study by the methods and materials used in the construction of the object, a wooden stave vessel. In this vessel, a number of individual wooden staves were held in a cylindrical configuration by metal bands. As the wood and metal deteriorated in the ground, the object became very unstable. This article describes innovative techniques used to overcome the problems faced in supporting this fragile and degraded object during the conservation process of block excavation, dehydration and consolidation. Through careful conservation, examination and analysis were able to reveal significant information about the typology and construction of this rare object. Dans ce recipient, un certain nombre de pieces en bois individuelles etaient maintenues de facon cylindrique par des bandes metalliques. Comme le bois et le metal s'etaient degrades dans le sol, l'objet etait devenu tres instable. Cet article decrit les techniques innovantes employees tout au long du processus de conservation afin de depasser les problemes rencontres pendant la fouille du bloc, la deshydratation et la consolidation pour soutenir cet objet fragile et endommage. Grace a une conservation meticuleuse, l'examen et l'analyse ont permis de reveler des informations importantes sur la typologie et la construction de ce rare objet. In dieser Fallstudie kamen als weitere Komplikationen die Methoden und Materialien hinzu, die zur Herstellung des Objektes, eines Behaltnisses aus holzernen Dauben, angewandt worden waren. Das Behaltnis ist aus mehreren individuellen holzernen Seitenteilen (Dauben) zusammengesetzt, die durch Metallbander in zylindrischer Form zusammengehalten werden. Mit fortschreitendem Verfall des Holzes und Metalls in der Erde war das Objekt sehr instabil geworden. Dieser Artikel beschreibt innovative Methoden, die benutzt wurden, um das schwierige Problem der Stabilisierung dieses stark zerfallenen und fragilen Objektes wahrend der Restaurierungprozesse der Blockbergung, Trocknung, und Festigung zu uberwinden. Dank der vorsichtigen Konservierung konnten Untersuchungen und Analyse ausgefuhrt werden, die bedeutende Informationen zur Typologie und der Konstruktion dieses seltenen Gefasses lieferten. Este estudio fue incluso mas complicado debido a los metodos y materiales utilizados en la construccion de este buque Anglo-Sajon de madera. En este buque, un numero de travesanos de madera individuales estaban sujetos con correas metalicas en una configuracion cilindrica. A medida que el metal y la madera que estaban en contacto con el suelo se fueron deteriorando, el objeto se volvio muy inestable. Este articulo describe las tecnicas innovadoras que fueron utilizadas para superar los problemas a los que nos enfrentamos para soportar este objeto, fragil y degradado, durante el proceso de conservacion: excavacion de las placas, rehidratacion y consolidacion. The article focuses on two Roman handles that were excavated from Walbrook in London, England. The first handle was in bone and it was discovered on the Bank of England Redevelopment site in 1928-1934, and it was carved from a single piece of bone of unidentifiable species and type. On the other hand, the second handle was found in Walbrook in 1934 and it was carved from a single piece of ivory. According to the article, bone handles were used with knives with single-sided, slender blades, while the ivory handles represent the products of a centralized group of workshops or related workshop groups.

The article describes several Medieval bone artefacts excavated from Castle Acre Castle in Norfolk, England. It is noted that most of the bone artefacts relate to personal use, to games and pastimes, and to dress and adornment. They include combs, pins, decorated mounts from boxes, dice, and musical instruments. According to the author, the worked bone on site shows evidence of high quality craftsmanship because the artefacts have been very finely cut and shaped.
