To evaluate the effect of the management system on soil quality, chemical and biological properties were measured in soils (0–20 cm depth) from Japanese plum orchards managed under organic and conventional conditions. The experiment was conducted between 2005 and 2014 in orchards established at the agricultural research station at Alcalá del Río, Seville, Spain. Overall, the soil chemical parameters in the organic orchard showed higher concentrations of soil organic matter, total N, available P and Mg. There was a trend of higher concentrations of K and Na, though for these elements the differences were significant only in two and one years, respectively. Similarly, concentrations of Mn and Zn tended to be higher in the organic plots, whereas contradictory trends were shown for Fe and Cu. No differences were found between the treatments for other physicochemical parameters such as pH and electrical conductivity. Regarding soil biological properties, the organic system was characterised with a significantly greater abundance of bacteria and fungi compared with the conventional system. The rhizobia population and the legume biomass were also higher in the organic orchard and the plants had more nodules. Likewise, the number of earthworms was higher in the organic system. The results showed that long-term organic management, including the use of cover crops and compost, resulted in a significant shift of the chemical and biological characteristics of the soil compared with the conventional management practice, thus improving soil quality and suggesting that organic farming may provide a potential solution to achieve sustainable agricultural systems. The sharing economy has allowed people from all over the world to more effectively utilize their assets. Owners or controllers of assets in the sharing economy are free to set any price they want subject to prevailing market demand as long as they operate in an imperfectly competitive market environment. This paper examines how various characteristics of an Airbnb listing (size, number of photos, ratings, host responsiveness, superhost status, distance from city centre, etc.) affect the prices of accommodation and determines which factors strongly affect price using weighted least squares (WLS) and quantile regression. A hedonic pricing model was developed and applied to data from the cities of Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville to determine how the different characteristics of an Airbnb listing affect the price of accommodation in these major three Spanish tourist cities. The estimation results, which are resilient to various robustness checks, indicate that overall rating as well as characteristics indicative of the size of the accommodation have the strongest positive influence on price, while the number of reviews and distance from the city centre have the strongest negative influence on price. A chart of the sixteenth century is extant, depicting the southern hemisphere and containing the earliest known representation of the southeast coast of South America, in the wake of Magellan and Elcano's circum navigation. In this paper, it is argued that astronomical observations of longitude were accommodated in the representation, and that the chart was produced in the specific context of the Juntas of Badajoz-Elvas, held between the representatives of the Spanish and Portuguese Crowns, to discuss the location and possession of the Spice Islands. It is further shown that the chart was produced using the information brought to Seville by the ship San Antonio, which had deserted the fleet in October 1520, before the passage to the Pacific Ocean was found. It is concluded that this chart presents a unique historical milestone in the history of cartography, containing the earliest material evidence of the effective use of astronomical methods to determine longitude in a nautical context. The preservation of the cultural heritage is a current challenge for modern societies. Thus, it is important to analyse the structural behaviour of historical buildings in order to detect and prevent future damage. This paper analyses the historical settlements of the Giralda tower of the Cathedral of Seville. Currently, it has a tilt which might have been caused by a differential settlement. With this aim, a detailed characterisation of the foundation and its geotechnical model has been carried out. An accurate 3D Finite Elements Model (FEM) has been used to analyse the settlements, taking into account the different construction phases, the loads, the time of execution and consolidation between phases. Finally, the 3D FEM results have been compared with other previous works and the in-situ measurements of the verticality of the tower. Therefore, the authors have found that the tilt to the south-east direction has been caused by the thicker, soft strata under this corner, which has caused differential settlement in this direction. The objective of this paper is to examine how the imposition of Public Service Obligations (PSO) on certain routes may affect the transportation sector, with a focus on aviation in the European Single Market. Thus, this research investigates how this form of public intervention can be useful to access adequeate transport system in remote and peripherical regions. Subsequently, this paper intends to display that the imposition of PSO on aviation routes should be considered as a unique mean of market intervention on behalf of territorial cohesion. To accomplish this, an analysis of the economic impact in terms of efficiency and sustainability in the case of the scheduled air route between Almeria and Seville in addition to other transportation alternatives such the bus or train was conducted. Additionally, this research attempts to shift the research focus away from PSO routes in order to determine the convenience of administrative concession as a way to foster the creation of specific routes, which furthermore cannot be covered by the entrepreneurship of private initiative in a free market regime. Consequently, this approach recognises that this form of public intervention is a way of correcting particular market failures, such as the lack of the adequate transportation. Carrying out an intervention for the conservation and restoration of architectural heritage, focused on the preservation of decorative elements such as polychromed plasterwork, implies following a methodology to study the materials and techniques used in each case to establish an intervention proposal according to the circumstances. This work offers some methodological guidelines necessary to approach the conservation of plasterwork and its polychromies, applied in a recent case study according to the criteria established by the 14th General Assembly of ICOMOS in 2003, the Law 14/2007 of Andalusian Historical Heritage, the Law 16/1985 of the Spanish Historical Heritage, and indications contained in the ECCO Guidelines. The novelty of the paper is that it presents the conservation decisions on a real case from the beginning until the end — showing the entire process and validating the proposed methodology — by using current restoration techniques and digital tools for the reconstruction of plasterwork. Proximity tourism planning is regarded as a significant challenge at the present time. This paper conceptualizes this type of tourism and justifies the need to approach it in post-coronavirus spatial planning scenarios, especially for addressing the peri-urban areas of medium and large cities, intermediate spaces of the contemporary urban model that have hardly been considered as tourism geographies. The conceptualization of proximity tourism and the justification of its current relevance are completed by a tourism planning proposal for the peri-urban territory of the city of Seville (Spain), which visualizes an implementation channel for the exposed theoretical reflections. This paper analyses the effect on retail fuel prices of factors such as belonging to dominant firms, the position of a local monopoly or oligopoly, and service station location. We study the effect of belonging to the dominant firms in the market, Repsol and Cepsa, of enjoying a local natural monopoly or oligopoly in rural areas, and of being located in places with captive demand, such as highways and motorways, as well as in the city centre. We apply this study to service stations in the province of Seville (Spain). The main findings are that the two main distributors, Repsol and Cepsa, set a higher price. We also find market power at a local level, which appears through monopoly or duopolies in rural areas, and which also results in higher prices, albeit to a much lesser degree. Building Information Modeling for the conservation and maintenance of architectural and cultural heritage is a great scientific debate nowadays. The creation of an HBIM model allows managing the geometry of the building and exchanging information between the experts involved in the conservation of historic buildings. This paper fosters the creation of an as-built-HBIM containing detailed structural deformations, for which modeling processes with scarce presence in the scientific literature are required. In this sense, two modeling procedures for a structural HBIM Project are proposed for the Pavilion of Carlos V in the Real Alcázar in Seville, Spain. Also, two states of the structural HBIM Project of the Pavilion are geometrically analyzed: 1) theoretical-HBIM, without deformations, generated by using measurements from documentary sources, and 2) as-built-HBIM created from point clouds from terrestrial laser scanning and photogrammetry. The dynamics of anthropic occupation of a territory over time play a central role in shaping the cultural landscape we see today. This paper presents a methodology for visually representing this phenomenon. The method consists of transforming data from archaeological records and historic cartography into a series of maps that allow historic settlement patterns to be interpreted and the historic depth of contemporary urban areas to be revealed. To create these maps, a series of geospatial analyses were carried out, including density analysis and weighted overlay. In a previous study, a layer of limewash was detected over the gypsum plasterworks used to decorate different spaces of the Real Alcázar of Seville such as interior rooms, patios and outdoor galleries. In this paper its use is analysed, namely whether it improves the properties of the plasterworks and provides a protective effect, through accelerated weathering tests designed specifically to reproduce real environmental conditions. Plaster specimens with similar composition and physical characteristics to those of the original plasterworks were prepared. After the cure of the specimens, the application of a layer of limewash was made. Samples were subjected to weathering tests that consist of water absorption cycles (by capillarity and immersion) and drying. The results showed that the application of limewash did not improve the durability of the plaster significantly, although seemed to have a more protective effect against weathering by capillarity tests in the specimens prepared with a higher water/plaster ratio. In fact, after the immersion tests a great part of the limewash layer became detached, while in the plasterworks of the Real Alcázar this behaviour has not been observed. So, capillarity tests seem to be more adequate to reproduce the real weathering conditions of these ornamental elements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines visitor satisfaction in the context of heritage tourism in two tourist-historic heritage destinations: Seville and York. The study investigates the direct and indirect relationships between quality of experience, perceived value and emotions on satisfaction. The results show that the quality of experience positively and directly influences satisfaction through the cognitive variable perceived value and the affective variable emotions. The indirect effect of quality of experience through emotions on satisfaction was greater compared with the indirect effective through perceived value. Therefore, this study draws attention to the importance of quality of experience and emotions on visitor satisfaction. Given that heritage tourism has the potential to elicit emotional and experiential responses by visitors, these findings have significant management implications for heritage destination managers when considering the heritage visitor experience. Jerez de la Frontera and its wines enjoy an unquestionable reputation. The expansion of wine production and consumption in the Early Modern period was made possible by developments that began at the end of the Middle Ages, on which this paper focuses. Our aim is to analyze two products of the vine, raisins and wine, which had distinctive identifying characteristics in the period studied. It was in the fifteenth century that Jerez de la Frontera, according to its socioeconomic situation, became the second most important city of the Kingdom of Seville, due in part to the production of wine and the thriving community of merchants, as well as the activities associated with its pier (called El Portal) and the port at Bahía de Cádiz. The present study centers on the period from the fifteenth century through the turn of the sixteenth to examine the place of raisins and wines from Jerez in commercial circuits along the Mediterranean Sea and the north–south routes of the Atlantic Ocean. This study analyzes the influence of fine particles PM2.5on nonprogrammed children’s hospital admissions that occurred in the city of Seville between 2007 and 2011, and makes an economic assessment of the cost of the children’s hospital admissions for respiratory causes due to particle pollution. The PM2.5dose-response functions for each type of hospital admission were used to quantify the cost of the hospital admissions. It can be concluded that the PM2.5concentrations have negative effects on bronchiolitis, pneumonia, asthma, and bronchitis and other causes. A reduction of the daily average annual PM2.5concentration from the existing levels to 10 µg/m3would show an annual average reduction of children’s hospital admissions due to respiratory diseases of 0.09 cases. This paper shows that the daily average cost for children hospital admissions due to respiratory reasons in the city of Seville, associated with daily average annual levels of PM2.5above 10 µg/m3, was almost 200€. Implications: Elevated PM2.5 concentrations in Seville have negative effects on children’s bronchiolitis, pneumonia, asthma, and bronchitis and other causes. A reduction of the daily average annual PM2.5 concentration from the existing levels to 10 μg/m3 would suppose an annual mean reduction of children’s hospital admissions due to respiratory diseases of 0.09 cases. The objectives of this paper are two-fold. First, to elaborate a theoretical model that shows the characteristics of an entrepreneur of quality and the factors that influence them. Second, to apply the model to entrepreneurs in the province of Seville, one of the least developed areas in the European Union. The purpose is to show the importance of entrepreneurship for business success and, more importantly, in economic development. In summary, the model shows that entrepreneurs of quality possess an intrinsic motivation and, as consequence of this, they adopt some energizer behaviours, such as the capacity for innovation, ambition and co-operation with others. The model also takes into account factors that influence these characteristics, including the personal context of the entrepreneur, such as experience, education and family, and the global context, such as productive opportunities, socio-cultural factors and political-institutional factors. In the analysis of the entrepreneurs of Seville, the paper mainly focuses on the motivation and the energizer behaviours and their interdependence. A group of beads from the artificial cave of La Molina (Lora de Estepa, Sevilla) and Cova del Gegant (Sitges, Barcelona) were made from biogenic raw material and intentionally covered by a layer of resin. This is the first time this type of treatment has been documented on elements of adornment in the Late Prehistory of the Iberian Peninsula. The organ and the clock were, up until the Industrial Revolution, the two most complex machines ever to have been created. Their ingenuity, cost, and ability to elicit reactions of wonder meant that they were readily adopte d as symbols of power and prestige, and over time were to become incorporated into the very fabric of both city and church. As elsewhere in Europe, the organ in the Hispanic world reached its zenith in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as a result of technological advances and a quest for new sounds, in keeping with the insatiable desire for novel experiences that was typical of the epoch. Unlike its counterparts, the unique central location of the liturgical nucleus within the interiors of Hispanic cathedrals privileged the organ as a visual, spatial, and sonic focus. Conditioned by the broad hall-like configuration of these interiors, Hispanic organs developed a lateral façade, evolving in the eighteenth century as monumental walls of sight and sound - a nexus of architecture and music. This paper uses a lens of spatial analysis to explore the quest for architectural and sonic symmetry, spatial novelty, and sensorial affect in the Hispanic world. Examples such as the cathedrals of Seville, Mexico City, Granada, and Malaga are used to assess the role that the double-façade mirror organ played in the configuration of the sonic-architectural experience of the Baroque. This paper examines the production and consumption of a table ware bowl, known as an ataifor, between the sixth/twelfth and eighth/fourteenth centuries in Seville. During this period, al-Andalus underwent great political change with the Berber invasions followed less than 200 years later, in most areas, by the Christian Reconquista. Documentary sources suggest that in the case of Seville, this dynamic political situation led to substantial social upheaval. However, recent research, encompassing material culture studies, had led us to question the extent of this upheaval. Here, results of a preliminary study into the ataifor indicate a lesser degree of social change in the city during the sixth/twelfth to eighth/fourteenth centuries than previously understood. The aim of this paper is to study the impact on consumers of rationing policies implemented during water shortages. Water scarcity gives rise to the need for rationing, and various methods, including supply cutoffs, can be used. A model is devised to quantify the welfare losses associated with qualitive and quantitive restrictions. Based on virtual prices and using the consumer surplus as a welfare measurement, welfare variations for different users have been calculated. To achieve the aim, information relative to Seville (Spain) has been used, analysing the drought period that took place in the first half of the 1990s. This paper presents a model of residential water demand based on the Stone-Geary utility function, which explicitly considers a threshold of water that is insensitive to price and a quantity that can adapt instantaneously to price changes. First, the threshold is assumed constant, being then allowed to vary according to past levels of consumption, a proxy for households' water-using equipment and habits. A measure of the depreciation rate of habits is derived and the effectiveness of price and non-price conservation measures are compared. Touristification refers to the multi-dimensional transformation of an area due to severe and rapid tourism intensification, which can harm that place's inhabitants in different ways. The activity's boom in the 2010s brought about an exponential increase in short-term tourist rentals (STRs) in traditionally non-tourist areas across cities worldwide, triggering or expanding displacement dynamics. The study delves into the connections between touristification and displacement and how the latter has conditioned neighbors' lives. As the health crisis abruptly stopped tourist hypermobility, we also question how displacement has been affected and the ways in which it might evolve in the post-pandemic city. We focus on Seville, the capital of Andalusia in southern Spain, a region highly dependent on the tourism and real estate sectors that has annually broken its visitors' records until the Covid-19 pandemic broke out. We reflect upon how local populations in central and increasingly tourist neighborhoods have experienced expulsion before and amidst the pandemic through thirty interviews with residents and displacees from different socio-economic backgrounds in Seville's historic district. We conclude that the reconversion of STRs into long-term leases during and after the pandemic has resolved little compared with the damage already done. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Non-destructive testing (NDT) for the diagnosis of heritage buildings has proved to be one of the most sustainable approaches in the field of preventive conservation. Nevertheless, the comprehensive management of NDT information is complex, often resulting in a poorly optimized use of the data. This contribution aims to propose a method for integrating NDT data in a standardized way into simplified digital information models, produced using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This method is applied to the plasterwork located in the Courtyard of the Maidens, which are elements with an enormous historic-artistic value in the Royal Alcazar of Seville (Spain), a significant UNESCO monument. For this purpose, a multi-scale web GIS-based model has integrated the NDT information from the plasterworks, such as ambient conditions, damage mapping, C-Shore Hardness, Superficial Humidity, Infrared thermography (IRT), Digital Image Processing (DIP) and Ground Penetration Radar (GPR). The combined georeferencing of the data from the various measurements and their simultaneous visualization has enabled the detection of vulnerable areas in the complex. The results are easily accessible for managers, and additionally show the analytical potential of the research approach, thereby allowing a quick diagnosis and hierarchization of tasks. The expansion of holiday rentals' worldwide makes it relevant to confirm what are the determinants of these accommodations' daily rates. This research aims to compare two models on estimating holiday rentals' daily rate through variables that influence it; using artificial neural networks and hedonic pricing method, with the same cross-sectional dataset and variables with data obtained from Booking.com listings from Seville (Spain), a 'cultural tourism' large European city. Artificial neural networks estimations adapt better than the hedonic pricing method due to non-linear relations involved, although hedonic estimators have a clearer economic interpretation. Variables related to size, location and amenities appear as the most relevant in the models, including also seasonal and special events factors. The models presented, not only help to clarify these variables but also allow estimating a rental price congruent with the characteristics of the dwelling and season, being useful as an objective valuation method for the main agents of the accommodation sector: Owners, clients and peer-to-peer platforms. This study wants to highlight the convenience of using Booking.com listings as the main data source, as two variables presented as relevant for the models (size and location) are not available in other peer-to-peer platforms like Airbnb. This article reports on the second seminar on Financial Statement Analysis in Seville, Spain on April 5 to 6, 1991 under the chairmanship of Jesus Urias and Joaquina Laffarga. Although the seminar was mainly oriented to academics, several professionals and auditors attended bringing together nearly one hundred people from twenty different universities. Six general themes were introduced at the meeting in order to promote discussion. Two of them were oriented to the academic studies of financial analysis. Most of the programs follow a traditional approach which is mainly focused on ratio analysis.

Regarding the constantly increasing cooling demands in the building sector due to climate change effects, strategies for reducing the cooling demands are vital. Among the major strategies is thermal insulation, however, overheating phenomenon during the summer months is a frequent problem in over-insulated buildings. In this study, a typical dwelling was examined in ten Mediterranean regions concerning the influence of the envelope's thermal transmittance on its cooling performance. A passive dynamic insulation system was also developed and implemented, while its cooling performance was optimized through a rule-based control strategy for the cooling period of each region. Regarding always the occupants' thermal comfort perception, increased cooling loads were recorded for most of the regions with the highly insulated envelope, which reached up to 12% for the city of Damascus, while in the hot-desert regions the picture is reversed. The dynamic insulation system displayed great potential, as its efficiency was maximum with the super-insulated envelope, resulting in up to 61% less cooling demands for the city of Seville. Finally, by disregarding the occupants' interference in the cooling system, as most of the national legislations do, higher cooling needs are calculated, that in our study reached up to 49% for the super-insulated envelope. The study of a set of marine arthropod shells from an archaeological excavation carried out in 1991–1992 in the tholos of La Pastora (Cooper Age Mega-site of Valencina-Castilleja, S Spain), has highlighted the environmental implications and ornamental use as beads not cited so far for this purpose. It is the barnacle species Chthamalus montagui Southward, 1976, of which are preserved 71 complete specimens. In this study a taxonomic analysis of these organisms is carried out, determining their classification and their physical and ecological characteristics, which make them especially suitable for this use. The interpretation is made regarding the environment in which these organisms were collected during the 3rd millennium BCE. Thus, it points towards a protected coastal area, but with a predominant marine influence, such as the wide marine bay that formed the mouth of the Guadalquivir River in those times. Finally, a radiocarbon analysis of one of these beads and two specimens of another species of barnacle collected in the rocks of the monument, provide a time range of 2760–2200 yr BCE. Accommodation is one of the main sectors affected by the emergence of platform economies. This issue has been addressed by many researchers, but they have mainly focussed on Airbnb and large cities. Thus, there is a need for research on medium-sized cities and how they have been affected by the growth of short-term rental (STR) homes. Using official data, we analysed the spatial distribution of holiday rental homes in four Andalusian cities: Cordova, Granada, Malaga, and Seville. Using tourist density and intensity indicators, we created maps showing the concentration of STRs in historic centres, which matches the spatial distribution pattern of traditional tourist accommodation (TA). The analysis also identified areas in each city into which STRs may expand in the future. The results of this study may help policymakers and institutions responsible for territorial and tourism planning to better understand how the emergence of platform economies is impacting tourist destinations. This article deals with the distribution of tourist housing in cities. Its main objective is to show new data and methods to more precisely locate tourist housing; to that end, four indicators of the concentration of tourist housing are proposed on a detailed scale and applied to Seville, Spain. This approach should enable future studies to achieve a more detailed analysis of the phenomenon's real effects on the resident population. Regarding the current health crisis, it presents an accurate picture of the situation before the COVID19 pandemic and will be a perfect departure point for following the progress of the analysed phenomenon both during and after the crisis in the forthcoming work. The results obtained clearly represent a qualitative advance over previous literature in various aspects: (a) the new tourist housing sources used to avoid the location errors of the usually available data sources (i.e. Inside AirBnb); (b) combined usage of this tourist housing source with new spatial references (cadastral data) enables more precise localization of individual tourist housing; and (c) combined usage of these two data sources (tourist housing and cadastral units) enables the extraction of new and detailed indicators regarding the distribution and concentration of tourist housing. Music printing in the Iberian Peninsula has been little studied and rarely has this specialized aspect of book production been considered in the broader context of more general trends in printing there during the sixteenth century. Music historiography has tended to assume that music printing failed to flourish because of poor local demand. However, more recent evidence, including analysis of book inventories, suggests that there was a thriving market, based on both international and local distribution, but that the printing of music books was affected by many of the factors that beset printing in general, including the expense of importing high quality paper, limited availability of specialized fonts and the socio-economic vicissitudes of individual printers. This essay explores the dynamics of the production of and market for music books through analysis of three major cities – Seville, Barcelona and Madrid – which appeared to offer the right conditions but which ultimately produced only a limited number of editions. The article discusses seventeen documents relating to the failed expedition to Florida led by the Panfilo de Narvaez in April 1528. The documents are stored in the document repository at Archivo General de Indias based at Seville, Spain. The details related to the five declarations produced by survivors of the expedition are discussed. The paper helps to study Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca's famous account "La Relacion," usually referred to as the Naufragios.

This article investigates the multiple functions of a periodical as a format of knowledge produced by and for the educated population of a middle-sized Spanish town. Situated between media and knowledge history, the purpose of this study is twofold: First, it discusses the contents and editorial circumstances of La Floresta Andaluza. Secondly, it looks into the connections between media, knowledge, space, and social configurations by investigating the periodical as an agent of public communication that addresses (and makes up) its audience as a knowledge milieu and politically responsible group. As a consequence, the article contributes to a new understanding of media history from the periphery and explores the relationships between editorial activities, the production of knowledge, and sociopolitical transformations in nineteenth-century Spain. In this article, we propose an index to measure the performance of the Spanish Football league most important teams during the 2016/2017 season. Using data from 10 Spanish first division football clubs, and principal components analysis, we construct a performance index as a combination of five dimensions: economic, fans-related, historical, team quality and the season's data, along with 22 variables. Results show that Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Athletic de Madrid are the highest-ranked teams, matching their season's top positions. Additionally, while Sevilla, Villarreal, Real Sociedad and Espanyol exceeded expectations, Athletic de Bilbao, Valencia and Real Betis did not meet their own, compared with their season's position. After two challenging processes of democratisation, Spain and Portugal decided to celebrate their new democratic national identities through similar mega cultural events. Following the end of the Cold War, in 1992, Spain commemorated the Fifth Centenary of the first voyage of Columbus to the Americas, overlapping the event with the Seville Expo; six years later; Portugal planned a universal exhibition in Lisbon whose slogan was "The Oceans: a heritage for the future". The shared desire to connect their current liberal democratic identity with a past of male transatlantic maritime expeditions is not accidental. This article aims to address the socio-cultural links among national representation, domestic political circumstances and international connections within the Iberian Peninsula after the long-lived European dictatorships. First, I will consider the entangled relations between the two Iberian countries and their former colonies. Second, I will disambiguate to what extent this postcolonial present helped in the construction of neo-liberal and cosmopolitan self-perceptions and identities. This was in accordance with the globalisation trends, the rhetoric of modernisation and urban regeneration within a post-industrial era. The goal of this research is to propose a new method of characterizing rammed-earth walls. Based on their historic building materials properties, five broad test groups were established for the characterization: chemical and mineralogical composition, physical properties, mechanical properties, particle size distribution, and dating. These determinations can, in turn, be grouped into two different types: instrumental techniques such as XRF, XRD, and SEM-EDX, as well as adaptations of standard methods (mainly UNE-EN standards) for application to these materials. As case studies where the proposed method is applied, we present our research on the rammed-earth walls in the ramparts of Seville and Malaga (Spain), clearly showing the method's capacity for comparing and differentiating different rammed-earth walls. The main aim of our current investigation is the colorimetric evaluation of protective treatments (consolidants) applied to traditional Islamic plasterworks, under natural ageing conditions. From analyses of the original pictorial plaster remains in the Courtyard of the Maidens of the Real Alcázar in Seville, Spain (a World Heritage Site) we prepared test specimens, using materials and techniques similar to the original ones. We analysed 56 test specimens painted with four pigments (yellow, green, blue, and red), using two different binders (animal glue and gum arabic), onto which five representative consolidants were applied: barium hydroxide, acrylic copolymer, polyvinyl butyral, ethyl silicate, and bacterial carbonatogenesis. The test specimens were subjected to natural ageing for one year (indoors and outdoors), enabling a colorimetric assessment to be made of the changes of the polychrome surfaces. The colorimetric heterogeneity of the 56 specimens after ageing registered an average value of 2.7 CIELAB units, assessed using the mean colour difference with respect to the mean. In the aged specimens, the addition of consolidants resulted in average colour differences (mainly lightness differences) of 10.7 and 6.7 CIELAB units, considering as a reference the specimens without consolidants aged indoors and outdoors, respectively. These colour differences were very similar for both binders but not for the four pigments, higher values being found for the blue and red pigments. Considering as reference the samples without consolidants aged outdoors, we found no statistically significant colour differences, either among the five consolidants (p = .094) nor the two binders (p = .674) used. In addition to the magnitude of colour differences, the choice of the most appropriate consolidants must also consider aspects related to performance and effectiveness. Overall, for the type of paints tested, the polyvinyl butyral consolidant appeared to perform the best, followed by the ethyl silicate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tourists' attraction to filmed sites has increased destination marketing organisations (DMOs) interest in film-induced tourism. Seville, Spain, has been the setting of many national and international film productions. Film tourism research has focused on impacts, travel preferences and destination choice, but there is a lack of research on motivations of film tourism. As a consequence, DMO actions in film tourism are often developedad hoc, in an unplanned and opportunistic way without understanding the phenomenon. This research tries to fill this gap by focusing on film tourism in Seville in order to identify film tourists' motivations. Results identify film tourism activity and find five motivations of the film-induced tourist in Seville: film site experiences, fantasy, novelty, touring the film and personal film-location connection. Results show films add something valuable to destination experience (as a secondary or tertiary attraction). Destination managers should consider novelty factor as an element to enhance tourist experience, especially for non-European ones as well as for female tourists and tourist above 25 years, to motivate a slightly positive site experience. Many studies have focused on the importance of immigrants participating in the public spaces of the cities where they have settled in order to become integrated. Our research, in contrast, demonstrates the importance of contextualizing participation within the framework of the power relationships that justify and give meaning to certain practices of discipline and control. We look at one concrete example in Seville (Spain): the regulation of the Latin American sports leagues of San Jeronimo. This study builds on the concepts developed by Florida in his work “The Rise of the Creative Class”. In doing so it seeks evidence for the claims made that the creative arts address deficiencies identified in the terminology of ‘cultural tourism’. The case relates to flamenco performances in Seville. The art complex of flamenco survived on the one hand as a symbol of Andalusian culture on the other hand it depends strongly on the international tourism market. Policies to promote bicycle usage in the city of Seville, Spain, are analysed, focusing on the development of a public hire-cycle system, and utilising a survey sample of 1530 citizens in the main parts of the historical old town and generalised ordered logit models. Despite the system being well-received and there being a growing number of users and a major modal shift towards the bicycle, it has had to contend with protests and reticence from some sectors of the population. Political and ideological variables are significant, and citizens' philosophy of a ‘global city'. A policy of this type demands a proper citizen consultation process and a suitable communication campaign to illustrate its advantages in terms of environmental protection and social justice, otherwise the risk is run of hostility turning to vandalism and endangering the scheme's economic viability. This article analyses the dissemination of news in the Spanish language throughout Europe during the seventeenth century, with attention given to the principal strategies put into effect by printers, publishers, entrepreneurs, and newsmongers for printed newssheets. Concretely, it analyses how the emergence of several weekly newspapers occurred in the Low Countries, both in those areas under the Spanish monarchy (with Brussels as the main focus for the emission of news) and those that were not (with Amsterdam and the Jewish community originating from the Iberian peninsula as the basic news agents), and their reception and redistribution within Spain. Here, in their turn, certain cities stood out that, for various reasons, received and distributed news from several parts of Europe; these were principally Seville, San Sebastián and Barcelona, where, besides, genuine news offices were established. An essay on the founding of the Archivo General de Indias (AGI) is presented, focusing on the role of Spanish historian Juan Bautista Muñoz. It examines Muñoz's suggestion that the archive be located in Casa Lonja in Sevilla, Spain. The author considers the text "Ordenanzas para el Archivo General de Indias Galvez Castillo," written primarily by Muñoz and promulgated by Spanish King Charles IV. Muñoz's relationship with Spanish Minister of Indies José de Gálvez is also explored.

The fiestas in celebration of the canonization of King Fernando III in 1671, organized by the cathedral of Seville, were among the most splendid in seventeenth-century Spain. The written account by Fernando de la Torre Farfán, illustrated by magnificent etchings, gives an unusually detailed description of the ephemeral architecture and decoration created for the occasion. Recent research gives insights into the extent to which this was a remarkable collaborative effort between the greatest artistic talents in Seville (Juan de Valdés Leal, Bernardo Simón de Pineda, Bartolomé Murillo, Pedro Roldán, Matías de Arteaga, and a host of other artists) and the canons of the cathedral, notably, Justino de Neve and Juan de Loaysa. The province of Seville, situated in the south-western part of the Iberian Peninsula, contains a large number of archaeological sites. Some of them are of great significance: for example, the ancient Roman cities of Itálica and Munigua, the megaliths in Valencina de la Concepción, or the Roman necropolis in Carmona. These four mentioned above receive a considerable number of educational visits by students between the ages of twelve and sixteen, and a number of educational projects have been carried out there. The purpose of this study was to describe patterns of heroin and cocaine consumption in socially excluded drug users, and to identify factors associated with intravenous drug use. Methodology: The sample was made up of 391 participants, and the interviews were carried out at different meeting points of the target population in the cities of Granada and Seville. The data were collected using a structured interview which covered HIV risk infection and intravenous drug use, social factors, marginality, health and quality of life. For the interviews, peer driven intervention was used. The statistical analysis consisted of descriptive analysis and binary logistic regression. Results: Health and social indicators show a high incidence of self-reported infectious diseases, poor mental health, criminality, and early onset of heroin and cocaine use. Granada had a greater number of injectors than Seville. Having an intimate partner who injects, having been in prison, and homelessness all tended to increase the probability of injecting. Younger people, women, and those who had begun to use drugs later were less likely to use drugs intravenously. Conclusions: Although we cannot measure the chronological development association of these variables in this study, it offers a profile description of those people who continue using intravenous drugs, and indicates the possible barriers to social and employment integration of this population. Borage (Borago officinalis L.) is cultivated in the north of Spain for fresh edible production and is gathered from natural populations for its fresh flowers with saline, cucumber-like flavor. It is considered as a weed in the rest of Spain. Nevertheless, the agroecological mediterranean conditions in the south of Spain are adequate for growing borage as an oilseed crop for y-linolenic acid (GLA) production. One ha of borage was sown on a farm in the Guadalquivir Valley in the Autumn of 1999. The farm was located in Carmona (province Seville) and cultivated under biological production conditions, controlled by the "Comité Andaluz de Agricultura Ecológica" (CAAE), the Andalusian biological control organization (an IFOAM member). The crop was developed by dry farming, fertilized with common vetch, and false technical sowing was employed to avoid weeds. The harvest was collected mechanically and the seed was produced using densimetrical method. A yield of 544 kg of clean seed/ha with 27.3-33.3% oil content was obtained. This yield is similar to that obtained under conventional agronomic conditions. That it is possible to cultivate borage under biological conditions in the south of Spain for GLA commercial production with biological label quality has therefore been demonstrated. This paper reports ongoing research analysing the kinds of educational innovation that Sevillian primary and secondary schools are creating to give an answer to the question of diversity. The overall aim of the study is to collaborate with schools to cope with change through the identification, description, comprehension and analysis of innovations directly linked to inclusive education. To achieve this aim we used a gradual research design developed into two phases, both combining data collection strategies and analysis of varied extent, intensity and quality. The first phase of the research was the identification of all the innovations linked to diversity carried out in the province of Seville during the 1996-97 academic year. To achieve this we designed and ratified a questionnaire to be distributed among a sample of primary and secondary schools. The completed questionnaires were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively in order to identify the kinds of innovation that schools have undertaken, as well as toidentify atypology of innovations. Case studies in the second phase will be aimed at gaining a deeper knowledge of the different kinds of innovation which emerged in the first phase. In the results we discuss the general and specific kinds of innovation, classroom processes and strategies to promote inclusive education in the case studies from the province of Seville.
