To investigate whether patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of uveitis. Data was collected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance system and included patients newly diagnosed with CKD between 2000 and 2012. The endpoint of interest was a diagnosis of uveitis. 30,256 CKD patients and 121,024 matched comparisons were analyzed. CKD patients were found to have a significantly higher cumulative uveitis incidence. Through multivariate Cox regression analysis, the CKD group was found to have higher risk of developing uveitis (adjusted hazard ratio 1.51). After stratified by gender, age, and comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia), the increased risk of uveitis in CKD patients remained significant. Patients with CKD were found to have higher risk of developing uveitis. For patients over 18 years old and with hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia, the presence of CKD was demonstrated as an additional crucial factor for uveitis development. Purpose: To investigate whether patients with thyroid disease are at increased risk of uveitis.Methods: Data was collected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance system and included patients newly diagnosed with thyroid disease from 2000 to 2012. The endpoint of interest was a diagnosis of uveitis.Results: In analyzing 21,396 patients with thyroid disease, yielding 85,584 matched comparisons, patients with thyroid disease to have a significantly higher cumulative incidence of uveitis when compared to the control cohort with the Kaplan-Meier analysis. This result was further confirmed by Cox regression analysis. The increased risk was persistent in both genders. The association between thyroid disease and uveitis was stronger in patients without diabetes or hypertension.Conclusion: Patients with thyroid disease were found to have a higher risk for uveitis. The host–parasitoid relationship and species identity of aquatic parasitoids of two damselflies Coeliccia cyanomelas (Platycnemididae) and Psolodesmus mandarinus dorothea (Calopterygidae) from Fushan and Lienhuachih in Taiwan were studied using morphological characters and DNA barcoding sequences. The parasitoids reared from the damselflies' eggs, and the field-collected parasitoids, were morphologically identified as Hydrophylita emporos (Trichogrammatidae), a recently described parasitoid of the damselfly P. m. mandarinus from Northern Taiwan. The CO1 (cytochrome c oxidase I) gene tree supported the identification as H. emporos, as well as all parasitoid samples from C. cyanomelas, P. m. dorothea and P. m. mandarinus. The sampled H. emporos populations did not differ genetically despite their different host associations. However, some genetic differences were found between H. emporos populations from Northern and Central Taiwan, indicating that the dispersal of H. emporos may be limited by geographical distances. Our results suggest that H. emporos can parasitise not only closely related sister subspecies, P. m. mandarinus and P. m. dorothea, but also phylogenetically distant species of another damselfly family, C. cyanomelas. This is the first record of multiple damselfly hosts for the aquatic parasitoid genus Hydrophylita. Land subsidence attributable to the overuse of groundwater has resulted in severe damage in both urban and rural areas and in developed and developing countries. By incorporating the externality of groundwater use in aquacultural farming, we analyse how the government can mitigate the land subsidence levels without reducing the farmers’ profits, by both reusing the retired aquacultural land and through adjustments in the locations of the species currently being farmed in Tong-shi Township, Taiwan. The simulation results indicate that if the species with high profit can be sustainably raised and moved to aquacultural lands that are less sensitive to groundwater extraction, the total profit could exceed that without the regulation. Anterior uveitis is the most common anatomical type of uveitis. Patients with noninfectious anterior uveitis may develop various ocular complications and eventually visual impairment. Appropriately differentiating the etiologies can help clinicians to predict the outcome, arrange clinical follow-up, and decide the treatment or prevention strategy. Adequate treatment and effective prevention strategies can reduce the frequency of recurrence and the risk of developing complications. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B27 is the most common positive finding in patients with noninfectious AAU in many countries including Taiwan. To report a consensus from experienced uveitis specialists and rheumatologists was made in Taiwan. A panel of nine ophthalmologists from nine different referral centers with expertise in the management of uveitis and an experienced rheumatologist was held on January 16, 2022. A comprehensive literature review was performed. Differential diagnoses for etiologies, general treatments, and prevention strategies were discussed. Each statement in the consensus was made only if more than 70% of the experts agreed. A flow chart and seven statements regarding the differential diagnoses for etiologies, treatments and preventions, and co-management with rheumatologists were included in the consensus. Older drivers with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) often show declining driving performance. Evidence is lacking regarding whether their driving skills can be improved after practice. To compare the practice effects of older drivers with MCI and drivers with normal cognition in an unfamiliar, standardized driving course with three practices. Single-blind two-group observational design. Twelve drivers with confirmed MCI as the experimental group and ten with normal cognition (NC) as the control, all ≥ 55 years old. The primary outcome was to assess the practice effects, measured with an in-car global-positioning-system mobile application to compare the speed and directional control of a complex manoeuvre after practices. Secondary outcomes were to assess the pass/fail rate and mistakes observed for the 3rd/final on-road driving practice. No instructions were given during practice. Descriptive statistics and the Mann–Whitney U test were used for data analysis. No significant inter-group difference in the pass/fail rate and number of mistakes. Some MCI drivers performed better in the speed and directional control of the S-Bend manoeuvre after practices. The driving performance of drivers with MCI may improve with practice. Context: Cinnamomum osmophloeum Kaneh. (Lauraceae) is one of the indigenous tree species in Taiwan. This tree species has been of interest to researchers because the chemical constituents of its essential oil are similar to those of Cinnamomum cassia Presl. bark oil, known as cinnamon oil, which is commonly used in foods and beverages. Objective: The anti-inflammatory activities of the leaf essential oils and their major compounds from seven provenances of C. osmophloeum are investigated here for the first time. Materials and methods: Chemical compositions of hydrodistilled essential oils obtained from C. osmophloeum leaves were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and the effects of essential oils on nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW 264.7 macrophages were investigated. Results: The leaf essential oils of cinnamaldehyde type and mixed type strongly inhibited NO production, with IC50 values ranging from 9.7-15.5 μg/mL. Furthermore, trans-cinnamaldehyde is responsible for the inhibitory activity of cinnamaldehyde type, and T-cadinol and α-cadinol are responsible for the inhibitory activity of mixed type. Discussion and conclusion: These findings demonstrate that the leaf essential oils and their constituents of C. osmophloeum have excellent anti-inflammatory activities and thus have great potential as a source for natural health products. As frequently there is no school nurse in a kindergarten setting, teachers receiving non-medical training take the primary roles of symptom assessment and management of young children with asthma. This article presents the knowledge, attitudes, and self-efficacy of asthma in kindergarten teachers in Taiwan. A total valid sample of 460 teachers was recruited from 70 kindergartens. Results showed most teachers understood the basic facts about asthma rather than the complex issues; they demonstrated positive attitudes toward having asthmatic children in class. Regarding self-efficacy, teachers lacked confidence in their ability to manage asthma attacks. Teachers' asthma knowledge showed a significant positive correlation with attitude (r = 0.27, p < 0.001) and self-efficacy knowledge (r = 0.23, p < 0.001). Given the need to help kindergarten teachers take care of children with asthma, the implications of kindergarten teachers' in-service education and training to asthma care are also discussed. The purpose of the present study was to design reflective writing mechanisms in a web-based portfolio assessment system and evaluate its effects on self-regulated learning. Participants were two classes of juniors majoring in data processing and taking a course called “Website design” at a vocational high school in Taiwan. One class was randomly selected and assigned as an experimental group (41 students) reflecting on learning processes through a web-based portfolio assessment system, whereas the other class was assigned as a control group (41 students) reflecting on learning processes through a paper-based portfolio. The result revealed that students who were highly satisfied with online reflective writing mechanisms significantly outperformed students who were less satisfied with online reflective writing mechanisms in self-regulated students reflecting on learning processes through a web-based portfolio assessment system significantly outperformed students reflecting on learning processes through a paper-based portfolio in self-regulated learning. Objectives:To compare intensiveness of use of child preventive health services (CPHS) between cross-cultural immigrant families and native-born families in Taiwan and to explore factors associated with differences in intensiveness of CPHS use. Design:Cross-cultural immigrant families were defined as families where the mother was an immigrant from another southeast Asian country. In native-born families, both parents were Taiwanese-born. Data were collected from 318 immigrant mothers and 340 native-born mothers of children aged 7 years or younger in a cross-sectional survey in central Taiwan. A social determinants framework of health inequities was constructed, and ordinal logistic regression models were used to examine the effect of four domains of intermediary determinants on the relationship between family type and underuse of CPHS: CPHS-related factors, medical-related factors, maternal acculturation factors, and sociodemographic/socioeconomic characteristics. Results:Cross-cultural immigrant families were less likely to intensively use CPHS than native-born families. This difference appeared to be mediated by the greater likelihood of having an older child or a lower educated father in cross-cultural families. Conclusion:Findings of this study highlight the importance of promoting health behaviors and combating health inequities and social inequalities for cross-cultural immigrant families in Taiwan from a sociodemographic/socioeconomic and political context. Analysis of human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) polymorphisms in the D-loop region has become a useful tool in forensic casework and matrilineal origin research. In this study, the mtDNA D-loop region including hypervariable region 1 (HV1), hypervariable region 2 (HV2), segment between HV1 and HV2 (7S DNA spanned region), and extended hypervariable region 3 (HV3ex) was sequenced in 539 unrelated individuals from eight population groups living in Taiwan. Combined analyses of the complete D-loop revealed a total of 383 haplotypes with 319 unique haplotypes. The probability of any two individuals sharing the same mtDNA haplotype decreased as the combination of control region segments extended and reached 0.48% with the combination of a complete D-loop region. Sequence variants in HV3ex can further discriminate the haplotypes in some population groups. Phylogenetic haplogroups of these subjects were analyzed. The multidimensional scaling plots of these population groups, constructed based on sequence of the complete D-loop, demonstrated a clear matrilineal genetic substructure in this area. In conclusion, this database of mtDNA complete D-loop sequence including HV3 can serve as a reference for forensic identification. Grounded on expectation-confirmation theory (ECT), this study proposes an integrated model aiming to understand how participants' continuance intention of knowledge creation and satisfaction are affected by their perceived identity verification (PIV) and performance expectancy in an online community. To assess the theoretical model, we surveyed two online communities - Baidu (China) and Yahoo knowledge+ (Taiwan), including 213 and 216 useable responses, respectively. Both PIV and performance expectancy are positively associated with continuance intention of knowledge creation. In Baidu community, satisfaction is affected either directly by performance expectancy or indirectly by PIV (through performance expectancy).
