Copper is an indispensable trace element in metabolism. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between copper and reproductive health, and possibly provide new insights for diagnosis and treatment. This study was based on data extracted from the NHANES database (2013–2014 and 2015–2016). The t-test, ANOVA, Chi-square test, multiple linear regression, and restricted cubic spline analysis were used. Serum copper levels were significantly higher in women with gestational diabetes than in those without gestational diabetes (P = 0.0150). Women with higher copper levels and smoking habits tended to deliver overweight babies (P = 0.028). Women with diabetes had higher serum copper and were prone to deliver overweight babies (P = 0.024). Serum copper levels showed a positive relationship with sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels (P < 0.0001). Patients with active cancer and venous thromboembolism (VTE) have elevated risk of recurrent VTE (rVTE) and major bleeding (MB). The risk is even higher within those with a prior bleeding event or renal disease. There is a need to understand the risk of rVTE and MB of commonly used anticoagulants among these high-risk patients. VTE patients with active cancer and treated with apixaban, warfarin, or low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) within 30 days of VTE were identified from five claims databases in the United States. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) was used to balance patient characteristics. The post-IPTW population was stratified by prior bleed or renal disease status. Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate interactions between treatment and prior bleed or renal disease on risk of rVTE and MB, with p value <.1 considered significant. Study criteria were met by 30,586 VTE cancer patients: 35.0% had prior bleed and 29.0% had renal disease. For apixaban, LMWH, and warfarin cohorts, the incidence (events per 100 person-years) of MB was higher in patients with prior bleed (17.48 vs 7.58, 25.61 vs 13.11, and 20.38 vs 8.97) or renal disease (15.79 vs 8.71, 22.11 vs 15.90, and 18.49 vs 10.39) vs those without the conditions. Generally, there were no significant interactions between anticoagulant use and prior bleed or renal disease on rVTE and MB (p for interaction >.1). The incidence of MB was higher among those with prior bleed or renal disease. Effects of apixaban, warfarin, or LMWH were generally consistent regardless of prior bleed or renal disease status. Social isolation has subjective and objective dimensions. This study explored the change trajectories of both dimensions of isolation and depressive symptoms and their interrelationships in terms of levels and changes over time. Data were drawn from the 2006–2018 Health and Retirement Study, involving a nationally representative sample of middle-aged and older adults (N = 7890). Parallel process latent growth curve models were used. Over time, objective isolation displayed a non-linear upward trend, subjective isolation displayed a non-linear downward trend, and depressive symptoms remained relatively stable. More objectively isolated people experienced smaller increases in objective isolation and more subjectively isolated people experienced smaller decreases in subjective isolation. Such negative intercept-slope associations were not observed for depressive symptoms. Net of sociodemographic characteristics, physical disabilities, functional limitations, and chronic diseases, each isolation dimension was associated with the level of depressive symptoms. But only the rate of change in subjective isolation was positively associated with that of depressive symptoms. The initial level of objective isolation may be one of the common origins of subjective isolation and depressive symptoms. Research that explores the intra-racial socio-demographic and clinical characteristics associated with perceived discrimination in healthcare settings in the US is lacking. We examined the prevalence of self-reported discrimination in HIV care settings during the past 12 months among Black persons from a nationally representative sample of US adults with diagnosed HIV collected 6/2018-5/2019. We assessed the prevalence of self-reported discrimination in HIV care settings during the past 12 months, perceived reasons for discrimination, and factors associated with discrimination among Black persons with diagnosed HIV (n = 1,631). Overall, 22% reported experiencing discrimination in a healthcare setting; discrimination was most often attributed to HIV status. Those reporting discrimination were younger, MSM, and living at or below the federal poverty level. They also experienced homelessness, incarceration and illicit substance use in the past 12 months, and anxiety and depression symptoms in the past 2 weeks. They were less likely to use ART or report 100% ART dose adherence in the past 30 days. No associations were found with viral suppression. Systems are needed to monitor, evaluate reports of, and address discrimination in healthcare settings. Objectives: To characterize the health behaviors and outcomes of first-year international students (FYIS) studying in the U.S. Participants and methods: Three different cohorts of FYIS from a large midwestern university in the U.S. completed three laboratory visits between August and March. The study began in 2017 and ended in March 2020. Anthropometrics, acculturative stress, eating behaviors, sleep, physical activity, and eating habits were assessed. Results: Fifty-four students completed the study. Females had a significant increase in percent body fat (p =.036) and a decrease in sleep quality (p =.006) at the final visit vs. baseline, and uncontrolled (p =.006) and emotional (p <.001) eating behaviors were higher. FYIS who gained more than the median 1.2 kg over the study period experienced higher acculturative stress (p =.004) and a decline in sleep quality (p =.003). Conclusion: Reducing acculturative stress and improving sleep quality should be explored as interventions to protect against undesirable changes in adiposity among FYIS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cultural capital is a known factor supporting success in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. We investigated Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) State population metrics in relation to SUD treatment completion for US clients from 2006–2017 (N = 5,404,374). Metrics that may signify greater available cultural capital were State AAPI Percentage, State AAPI Percent Change, and State AAPI Population. AAPI Percentage, AAPI Percent Change were positively associated, while AAPI Population was negatively associated with treatment completion (p < 0.001). Findings suggest treatment agencies in areas with low AAPI densities may improve outcomes by supporting AAPI community and cultural social networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Clinical trials drive the development of medicine. However, little is known about the current status of clinical trials on addiction. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of registered addiction-related trials from ClinicalTrials.gov. We examined all addiction-related trials registered on ClinicalTrials.gov up to March 23, 2020. Statistical analysis was performed by using SPSS 25.0, and a two-sided p <.05 was considered statistically significant. 370 eligible trials were identified. Over half of trials were completed, while only 13.8% of trials reported results. Sample sizes varied a lot with a median number of 84 per trial. Universities were the primary sponsor for 164 (44.3%) trials, followed by hospitals (96, 26.0%). Compared to trials without results, more trials with results were sponsored by universities (62.7% vs. 41.4%, p =.003), and conducted in United States/Canada (90.2% vs. 48.3%, p <.001). Most interventional trials were randomized with a parallel assignment, and 56.3% were blinded. Thirty one (41.3%) observational trials were cohort studies and 12 (16.0%) were case-only studies. Interventional trials were more likely to be funded by the US Government, while more observational trials were supported by industries. Trials funded by the US Government were more likely to be completed than those funded by other sources (p =.009). Most registered trials on ClinicalTrials.gov about addiction were interventional trials with purpose for treatment. Most interventional trials were randomized, parallel, and masked. This paper proposes a test to detect the change in persistence on the basis of the ranks of a series, then derives the asymptotic distribution of the proposed test under the null hypothesis that a series is stationary, and the consistency of the test is established under the alternative hypothesis that a series shifts from I (0) to I (1). The Monte-Carlo simulations demonstrate that the proposed test has less powers but more correct sizes in finite samples than the test proposed by Kim [Detection of change in persistence of a linear time series. J Econom. 2000;95(1):97–116], which means the test has a lower rejection rate than the Kim's test when the series is I (0). Small watersheds are ideal objects for studying the evolution of hydrological and water resources at small scales. Whether precipitation products can meet the runoff simulation of small watersheds is the main purpose of this study. With NOAA-CPC-US precipitation as a reference, in nine small watersheds of the United States, accuracy of the precipitation products such as PERSIANN, PERSIANN-CDR, TRMM-3B42V7, GPM-IMERG, StageIV, and ERA5 is analyzed. By driving the CREST hydrological model using these datasets, the runoff simulation effects were evaluated. Result shows the precipitation products match the NOAA-CPC-US from high to low in the order of StageIV, PERSIANN-CDR, GPM-IMERG, PERSIANN, ERA5, and finally TRMM-3B42 V7. These datasets have relatively low accuracy in the northern high latitude area and the western mountains, while accuracy is better in the central, southern, and eastern parts of the United States. In the runoff simulation effectiveness evaluation, the daily runoff of watersheds is simulated during the same verification period. The results show that: NOAA-CPC-US and StageIV have good simulation effect in small watersheds. In the northern and western United States, the PERSIANN, PERSIANN-CDR, GPM-IMERG, and ERA5 for runoff simulation should be used with caution. HIV clinical outcomes have not been fully assessed by place of birth at the national level. We analyzed the Medical Monitoring Project data, an annual cross-sectional survey designed to produce nationally representative estimates on adults with diagnosed HIV in the United States, collected during 2015–2017 (n = 7617). We compared sociodemographic, behavioral, and clinical outcomes by place of birth using Rao-Scott chi-square tests (P <.05). Overall, 13.6% of adults with diagnosed HIV were non-US-born. During the past 12 months, a higher percentage of non-US-born than US-born adults, respectively, were prescribed ART (89.4% vs. 84.1%), retained in care (87.1% vs. 80.0%), virally suppressed at the last test (77.2% vs. 70.9%), and had sustained viral suppression (70.9% vs. 63.3%). A lower percentage of non-US-born adults reported binge drinking (13.0% vs. 16.1%), using non-injection drugs (15.3% vs. 31.7%), and suffering from depression (15.9% vs. 23.3%) or anxiety (10.0% vs. 20.2%). A significantly higher percentage of non-US-born adults had Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) coverage (54.4% vs. 43.1%) and attended a RWHAP-funded health care facility (73.9% vs. 66.6%). To advance understanding of international students' psychological well-being and social-emotional experiences, we tested whether specific social influences could enhance international students' belonging and well-being and attenuate loneliness. Graduate and undergraduate international students (N = 126) from two universities in the United States participated in a year-long study. Structural equation modeling analyses revealed that perceived social support from domestic students in the fall predicted higher belonging in the subsequent spring, while perceived faculty social support in the fall predicted lower loneliness in the spring. Perceived faculty social support had an indirect effect on psychological well-being via loneliness. These novel findings provide initial evidence for the salience of social support from domestic students and faculty for international students' social-emotional adjustment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regional air quality models are widely being used to understand the spatial extent and magnitude of the ozone non-attainment problem and to design emission control strategies needed to comply with the relevant ozone standard through direct emission perturbations. In this study, we examine the manageable portion of ground-level ozone using two simulations of the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model for the year 2010 and a probabilistic analysis approach involving 29 years (1990–2018) of historical ozone observations. The modeling results reveal that the reduction in the peak ozone levels from total elimination of anthropogenic emissions within the model domain is around 13–21 ppb for the 90th−100th percentile range of the daily maximum 8-hr ozone concentrations across the contiguous United States (CONUS). Large reductions in the 4th highest 8-hr ozone are seen in the regions of West (interquartile range (IQR) of 17–33%), South (IQR 22–34%), Central (IQR 19–31%), Southeast (IQR 25–34%), and Northeast (IQR 24–37%). However, sites in the western portion of the domain generally show smaller reductions even when all anthropogenic emissions are removed, possibly due to the strong influence of global background ozone, including sources such as intercontinental ozone transport, stratospheric ozone intrusions, wildfires, and biogenic precursor emissions. Probabilistic estimates of the exceedances for several hypothetical thresholds of the 4th highest 8-hr ozone indicate that, in some areas, exceedances of such hypothetical thresholds may occur even with no anthropogenic emissions due to the ever-present atmospheric stochasticity and the current global tropospheric ozone burden. Implications: Because air pollution is intricately linked to adverse health effects, National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) have been established for criteria pollutants to safeguard human health and the environment. Areas not in compliance with the relevant standards are required to develop plans and policies to reduce their air pollution levels. Regional-scale air quality models are currently being used routinely to inform policies to identify the emissions reduction required to meet and maintain the NAAQS throughout the country. This paper examines the feasibility of the 4th highest ozone, which is used to derive the ozone design value for NAAQS, complying with various current and hypothetical 8-hr ozone thresholds over CONUS based on the information embedded in 29 years of historical ozone observations and two modeling scenarios with and without anthropogenic emissions loading. Hepatitis C (HCV) and HIV have common modes of transmission but information about HCV transmission risk, prevention, and treatment among persons with coinfection is lacking. The Medical Monitoring Project produces nationally representative estimates describing adults with diagnosed HIV in the United States. Using medical record data recorded during 6/2013–5/2017, we identified persons with detectable HCV RNA documented during the past 24 months. Among persons with coinfection, we described HCV transmission risk factors and receipt of HCV prevention services during the past 12 months and prescription of HCV treatment during the past 24 months. Overall, 4.9% had documented active HCV coinfection, among whom 30.2% were men who have sex with men (MSM), 6.7% reported injection drug use, and 62.1% were prescribed HCV treatment. Among MSM, 45.5% reported condomless anal sex and 42.3% received free condoms. Among persons who used drugs, 30.8% received drug or alcohol counseling, and among persons who injected drugs, 79.2% received sterile syringes. Among persons with HIV/HCV coinfection, recent drug injection was uncommon and most received sterile syringes. However, 1 in 3 were MSM, of whom half reported recent HCV sexual transmission risk behaviors. More than one-third of those with coinfection were not prescribed curative HCV treatment. Participants: A convenience sample of 210 community dwelling Black single mothers ages 18 to 45, who reside in U.S. urban communities. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional design was employed. Participants responded to an open-ended question that asked about reasons for depressed mood. A directed approach to content analysis was used to categorize the responses based on existing theoretical formulations and empirical findings about the causes of depression in women. Percentages and frequencies were used to describe the results of the analysis. Findings: A total of 319 usable responses were provided. Collectively and individually the most frequent responses were consistent with Social/Environmental factors such as lack of financial resources (n = 115; 36.05%), followed by Psychological factors such as general cognitive/emotional feelings of stress (n = 60; 18.81%), and parenting stressors or daily hassles (n = 40; 12.54%). Physiologic factors such as a having physiologic or medical conditions were reported less often (n = 14; 4.39%). Conclusions/Implications: Social/Environmental and Psychological factors contribute to depressed mood more often than Physiological factors in Black single mothers. Depression prevention efforts should target the social determinants of mental health in Black single mothers who should be connected with appropriate financial, psychological, educational and social service resources in the community. The genus Magnaporthiopsis of Magnaporthaceae (Magnaporthales, Sordariomycetes, Ascomycota) contains species that are predominantly necrotrophic pathogens, often producing simple hyphopodia and dark, ectotrophic runner hyphae on plant roots and stems during colonization. Fungal isolates from turfgrass roots with dark and ectotrophic runner hyphae were examined and identified based on morphological, biological, and phylogenetic analyses. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods were implemented to obtain phylogenetic trees for partial sequences of the 18S nuc rDNA, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer, and 28S nuc rDNA regions, and of the minichromosome maintenance complex 7 (MCM7), largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB1), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1) genes. Our isolates consistently formed a distinct and highly supported clade within Magnaporthiopsis. These findings were reinforced by common and distinctive biological and morphological characters. Additionally, we conducted pathogenicity evaluations and demonstrated the ability of this fungus to colonize roots of ultradwarf bermudagrass, one of its native hosts, via ectotrophic, dark runner hyphae, causing disease symptoms including root discoloration and reduced root and shoot mass. Altogether, our discoveries enabled recognition and description of a new species, Magnaporthiopsis cynodontis, which has widespread distribution in the United States. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Ethnic and racial differences in smoking patterns and behaviors have been well documented and most African American and Latino smokers are nondaily or light smokers. However, differences within smoking levels are understudied. Our primary aim was to determine whether there are racial and ethnic differences among African American, Latino, and White nondaily, light daily, and moderate to heavy daily smokers on (1) perceived health risk reduction, (2) intentions to quit, and (3) past year quit attempts. Design: Smokers were recruited through an online research panel for a cross-sectional survey (n = 2376). Sampling quotas were used to obtain equal numbers of African American, Latino, and White nondaily and daily smokers. Results: African American (59.6%) and Latino (54%) nondaily smokers were more likely than White nondaily smokers (45%) to currently limit their cigarettes per day (cpd) as a perceived health risk reduction strategy (p < 0.05). African American nondaily smokers were more likely than Latino and White nondaily smokers (p < 0.05) to limit their smoking in the past year as a perceived health risk reduction strategy (range: 0 'never' to 5 'always'; Means = 3.2, 2.9, 3.0, standard deviations [SD] = 1.1, 1.1, 1.2, respectively). African American nondaily smokers (15%) were more likely than either Latinos (7.8%) or Whites (8.5%) to intend to quit in the next 30 days (p < 0.01). African American (61.6%) and Latino (60.3%) nondaily smokers were more likely than Whites (49%) to have made a quit attempt in the past year (p < 0.01). Fewer racial and ethnic differences were found among daily smokers. Conclusions: Racial and ethnic group differences were more pronounced among nondaily smokers compared to light daily smoker and moderate to heavy daily smokers. This study investigates whether U.S. multinational firms with subsidiaries located in offshore financial centers (OFCs) (i.e. offshore firms) are more likely to be opaque in their voluntary disclosure relative to U.S. multinationals without such subsidiaries (non-offshore firms). We use management earnings forecasts to capture corporate voluntary disclosure. Consistent with the opportunism view, but inconsistent with the efficiency argument, our results (including robustness checks) show that offshore firms are less likely to issue earnings forecasts, disclose forecasts less frequently, exhibit a stronger tendency to withhold bad news forecasts, and release less precise forecasts than non-offshore firms. Moreover, of the three distinct dimensions of OFCs' institutional environment, namely, low taxation, lax regulation, and secrecy policy, each plays a role in negatively shaping firms' disclosure strategy. Thus, OFCs' institutional features exacerbate the opacity that plagues firms seeking to avoid taxes via their OFC subsidiaries. Our results are consistent with the notion that, beyond the scope of taxes, multinational firms' use of OFCs has a corrosive effect on market information dynamics. Incorporating market mechanisms into public provision of long-term care (LTC) is part of a global trend featuring the liberalization of policies and politics during the past four decades. Drawing on a conceptual framework of marketization developed by Anttonen and Meagher, this article examines how the market mechanism has been introduced in the delivery of public LTC services in Germany, U.S., and China. It also examines the lessons that China has learned and can further learn from the German and American experiences. The article shows that the U.S. and German models, which differ considerably from each other, have had strong influences on LTC policy-making in China, but the emerging Chinese system appears to be substantively different from both. Objective:Nonylphenol (NP) has provoked much environmental concern because of their weak estrogenic activities; however, few data are available on the environmental levels of the chemical in China.Method:Environmental or river samples were assayed for NP by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique.Results:The concentration for NP measured in Xiangjiang River, ranging from 0.174 to 3.411 μg/L with a mean value of 1.73 μg/L, was lower than the Water Quality Criteria for NP of the US (6.6 μg/L); however, the NP concentration was maintained at a higher level compare to the developed countries and other civil cities. NP concentration in downstream water was markedly higher than that both in midstream and upstream water. Tissue accumulation of NP was observed in aquatics. A ratio of mean concentration of NP in aquatic (chlamys farreri and hemiculter leucisculus) to that in river water was 241 and 1087, respectively. The presence of NP in tap water in two urban districts of Zunyi was common with a detectable rate reached 100.0%. Mean NP concentration in terminal tap water in Huichuan district was six times as high as Honghuagang district, which was above Standards for the Drinking Water Quality for Phenols of China (2 μg/L).Conclusion:The pollution of NP in Xiangjiang River, tap water, and aquatic in Zunyi belongs to moderate or severe level in the world. The Illinois Department of Transportation has adopted an economical and pragmatic methodology for designing earthquake-resistant highway bridges in the Midwestern United States. These so-called quasi-isolated bridges employ low-cost non-seismically designed bearing components as sacrificial structural fuses. During seismic events, fusing actions of these components and subsequent sliding of superstructures on substructures are intended to achieve response characteristics similar to those of conventionally isolated bridges that employ specially designed isolators. This study explores seismic structure-abutment-foundation interaction for quasi-isolated bridges in Illinois, employing a detailed yet efficient non-linear finite-element model for seat-type bridge abutments. The abutment model incorporates many structural components and geotechnical mechanisms that are critical to seismic response of the structure-abutment-foundation (SAF) system. Through non-linear static analyses performed on a complete bridge model, the force-transfer mechanisms, component fusing performance, and potential failure modes of the SAF system were explored. Using earthquake ground motions, non-linear dynamic analyses were conducted to evaluate seismic characteristics of the quasi-isolated bridge, sequences of critical limit state occurrences, and effects of abutment attributes on bridge seismic performance. Objectives: Although much has been published about the demographic and clinical characteristics of elderly patients with overactive bladder (OAB) who were enrolled in clinical trials, very little is known about the general population of elderly Americans with OAB. We update this gap in the literature by using real-world data to describe this population.Methods: We used Medicare claims and the Medicare Current Beneficiary Surveys from 2006 to 2011 to identify patients with OAB. We describe the demographic characteristics, functional impairment and physical limitations, concurrent medical conditions, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) scores, and concomitant medication use of patients with OAB; these characteristics are also described by sex and age group (65-74 vs. ≥75 years). We also compare the characteristics of OAB with non-OAB patients.Results: We identified 415 elderly patients with OAB (average age 79 years; 71% female) and 6868 without OAB (average age 77 years; 62% female). Patients with OAB reported high levels of functional impairment as measured by the Activities of Daily Living (44% vs. 33% for non-OAB patients), Instrumental ADL (53% vs. 40% for non-OAB patients), and physical functioning limitation (90% vs. 81% for non-OAB patients) scales. Elderly patients with OAB also experienced high levels of comorbidity burden, as measured by the number of medical conditions (18 vs. 11 for non-OAB patients), CCI (2.1 vs. 1.4 for non-OAB patients), and number of non-OAB-related concomitant medications used (11 vs. 8 for non-OAB patients).Conclusions: Elderly patients with OAB in the general population have high levels of functional impairment and physical limitations, comorbidity, and concomitant medication use. These characteristics should be taken into consideration when managing OAB symptoms and designing future clinical studies. These results, which are representative of elderly patients with OAB in the general US population, should, however, be interpreted in light of the key limitations of the data we used: patients may have been misclassified and medical conditions overestimated due to artifacts of diagnosis coding and our results can only be generalized to patients who were enrolled in Medicare Parts A, B, and D for at least 12 continuous months. Background: Obesity compromises firefighter safety, yet more than 70% of firefighters are overweight. Though healthcare professionals are encouraged to counsel overweight patients, the effectiveness of weight counseling is not consistent across studies.Objective: Examine longitudinal changes in cardiovascular risk factors and determine the role of healthcare professional weight loss advice on six-month weight changes among a national sample of male, overweight and obese firefighters.Methods: This study included baseline and six-month assessments of 757 firefighters. Medical and demographic data were collected using questionnaires. Investigators collected height, weight, percent body fat, waist circumference, blood pressure, and fasting serum samples (total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, glucose). Multilevel linear regression assessed the association between weight advice and outcomes.Results: Participants lost an average of 0.55 kg (95%CI: 0.17-0.93), and experienced significant improvements in systolic blood pressure (mean: 3.75 mm Hg; 95% CI: 2.35-5.14) and non-significant improvements in other clinical outcomes. Healthcare professional weight advice was not significantly associated with weight loss or other outcomes.Conclusion: Similar to other studies, results show little benefit of low intensity weight loss counseling. Diabetes affects an estimated 25.8 million people in the United States and is one of the leading causes of death. A major safety concern in treating diabetes is the occurrence of hypoglycemic events. Despite this concern, the current methods of analyzing hypoglycemic events, including the Wilcoxon rank sum test and negative binomial regression, are not satisfactory. The aim of this article is to propose a new model to analyze hypoglycemic events with the goal of making this model a standard method in industry. Our method is based on a gamma frailty recurrent event model. To make this method broadly accessible to practitioners, this article provides many details of how this method works and discusses practical issues with supporting theoretical proofs. In particular, we make efforts to translate conditions and theorems from abstract counting process and martingale theories to intuitive and clinical meaningful explanations. For example, we provide a simple proof and illustration of the coarsening at random condition so that the practitioner can easily verify this condition. Connections and differences with traditional methods are discussed, and we demonstrate that under certain scenarios the widely used Wilcoxon rank sum test and negative binomial regression cannot control type 1 error rates while our proposed method is robust in all these situations. In line with evidence that variation in children's vocabulary size facilitates learning, we asked whether growth in Mexican and Dominican children's expressive vocabularies in English and/or Spanish would predict later cognitive skills. Children and mothers were video-recorded sharing wordless books at 2, 3, 4, and 5 years, and children were assessed on language, literacy, and math skills at 5 years. Growth in children's English and Spanish vocabularies, based on transcriptions of booksharing interactions, predicted specific cognitive skills and was associated with changes to mothers' language use across time. There have been intense debates regarding which industrial sectors should be prioritized for receiving bailout in economic recessions. This paper takes a network perspective to rank sectors according to the Power-of-Pull (PoP), i.e. a sector's power to pull the overall economy. An eigenvector method is employed to assess the PoP of sectors in the USA, using input–output data from 1998 to 2010. The results support bailout to the motor vehicle sector, but argue against bailout to public infrastructure, health care and information technologies design and service sectors, and also reveal the continual decline of PoP ranking of computer and electronics manufacturing sector over time. This paper examines whether carcinogenic pollutants discharged from US Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) facilities are related to cancer hospitalization rates among the general population in rural and urban areas. We analyzed cancer hospitalizations (N = 440,061) across 20 states to find age- and sex-adjusted population cancer hospitalization rates. Multiple regression models were used to determine whether cancer hospitalization rates at the county level (N = 1102 counties) were associated with higher levels of carcinogenic discharges from TRI facilities, controlling for other risks. Significantly higher hospitalization rates were found in relation to higher TRI discharges for several cancer types that varied from urban to rural setting. Carcinogenic discharges from TRI facilities were associated with excess inpatient cancer treatment costs of $902.8 million in 2009. Future research may strive to move beyond ecological designs to examine cancer risks from TRI releases to better our understanding of cancer etiology and to establish appropriate environmental safeguards as indicated by the evidence. This article re-examines the evidence of return predictability for three major US stock indices using two recently developed data-driven tests, namely the automatic portmanteau Box–Pierce test and the wild bootstrapped automatic variance ratio test. In tracking the time variation of return predictability via rolling estimation window, we find that those periods with significant return autocorrelations can largely be associated with major exogenous events. Data from the 2007–2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) suggested that nearly half of U.S. adults aged 20 to 69 reported taking at least one dietary supplement in the past month. Logistic regression showed that the following factors were independently associated with a greater likelihood of supplement use: being female, older, white, having higher level of education, non-SNAP participation, and living in a food-secure household. To compare nutrient intakes between supplement users and non-supplement users, daily intakes of eight nutrients were examined. When considering nutrients from food, supplement users tended to consume greater amounts of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, folic acid, calcium, and iron; meanwhile there was no association between supplement use and daily intakes of vitamin B12 and zinc from food sources only. This study compares the evolution of container port systems in China and the USA in terms of port throughput, number of container ports and the concentration level in the container port system, based on the time-series data on these three features over the period 1979–2009 for China and 1970–2009 for the USA. The results show that the densities of container ports in the two countries are similar, and their evolutionary processes are alike, which has led to a comparable market structure in the port industries of the two countries. In addition, the disparities between container ports closely represent the unevenness in the regional economic development. We further compare the port management regimes of the two countries in terms of the administrative processes for port development and expansion, the ownership structure and the providers of port functions, which offer some explanation on the dynamics of port evolution in the two countries. In conclusion, it can be seen that the evolution of the container port system and the management regime in the USA can be a de facto reference for the future development of the Chinese container port system. Purpose: To examine whether socioeconomic status, as measured by educational attainment and annual household income, is associated with lifetime risk for workplace eye injury in a large US population. Methods: In analyses of data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (2005-2007, N == 43,510), we used logistic regression analysis and propensity score matching to assess associations between socioeconomic measures and lifetime risk for workplace eye injury among those aged ≥50 years. Results: The lifetime prevalence of self-reported workplace eye injury was significantly higher among men (13.5%) than women (2.6%) ( P < 0.001). After adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, eye care insurance, health status, and risk-taking behaviors, men with less than high school education (adjusted odds ratio [OR] == 2.24, 95% CI: 1.74-2.87) or high school education (adjusted OR == 1.92, 95% CI: 1.57-2.33) were more likely to report having had a lifetime workplace eye injury than those with more than a high school education. Men with an annual household income <$$15,000 were also more likely to report having had a lifetime workplace eye injury than those whose income was >$$50,000 (adjusted OR == 1.44, 95% CI: 1.07-1.95). After adjusting for other factors, no statistically significant associations between education, income, and lifetime workplace eye injury were found among women. Conclusions: Socioeconomic status was associated with lifetime risk for workplace eye injury among men but not women. Greater public awareness of individual and societal impacts of workplace eye injuries, especially among socioeconomically disadvantaged men, could help support efforts to develop a coordinated prevention strategy to minimize avoidable workplace eye injuries. Background. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a significant cause of mortality among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs), yet studies have consistently reported lower CRC screening rates among AAPIs than among non-Latino Whites and African Americans. Moreover, existing research tends to aggregate AAPIs as one group when reporting CRC screening, masking the disproportionate burden in cancer screening that exists across AAPI groups. Methods. This study examines differences in CRC screening rates in both aggregated and disaggregated AAPI groups as compared with non-Latino Whites in order to identify the most vulnerable AAPI subgroups in terms of obtaining CRC screening. This study utilizes merged data from the 2001, 2003, and 2005 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), specifically the data pertaining to adults aged 50 and older (n=52,491) from seven AAPI groups (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, South Asian, Vietnamese, and Pacific Islander) and non-Latino Whites. Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Services Use was utilized to select potential confounders to racial/ethnic differences in CRC screening. Results. When AAPI groups were considered as an aggregate, their CRC screening rate (46.8%) was lower than that of non-Latino Whites (57.7%). When AAPI groups were disaggregated, further disparity was noted: Koreans (32.7%) showed the lowest CRC screening rate, whereas Japanese (59.8%) had the highest. When the influence of potential predisposing, enabling, and need confounders was adjusted, Koreans, Filipinos, and South Asians were found to have a lower likelihood than non-Latino Whites to undergo CRC screening. Comparisons among AAPI subgroups further revealed that Filipinos, Koreans, Pacific Islanders, and South Asians were less likely than Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese to receive CRC screening. These results highlight the importance of identifying differences in CRC screening behavior among disaggregated AAPI subgroups in order to help health professionals and policy-makers prioritize which AAPI subgroups need the most urgent interventions in terms of CRC screening promotion. A supramonopoly is the market structure of a homogeneous good that is priced higher than the monopoly level. We present evidence of supramonopoly in the US air passenger service. For four airline mergers during the period of 1993 to 2009, we identify routes that dropped fares for no other reason than the increase in market power due to merger. Therefore each of those routes had fare higher than the monopoly level before the merger to monopoly. We explain supramonopoly as the result of a cartel with strongly punitive matching rules. A case study of the cancer risk to humans posed by persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in an industrial area of China, which has a long history of contamination from many sources, is presented. Relatively great concentrations of POPs around the chemical industrial parks have the potential to be chronically carcinogenic to local people. Sixteen individual PAHs listed for priory control by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), metabolites of DDTs, and isomers of HCHs were measured in soils and a human health risk assessment was conducted by use of USEPA exposure models for children and adults, respectively. Geostatistical methods were used to simulate the spatial diffusion of potential carcinogenic risk, and non-parametric Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were employed to analyze the impact of point sources on the surrounding area. The mean value of the sum of Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (∑ELCR) exceeded the generally acceptable risk level of 1.0E-06 recommended by the USEPA for carcinogenic chemicals. The maximum ∑ELCR was 2.9E-04 for children, which was observed inside the chemical industrial parks. This study provides a comparative analysis of the international broadcasts of the opening ceremony and the multiple interpretations of it in terms of the adaptation of the host broadcaster and the comments of domestic broadcasters on the Beijing Olympics. Analysis of the production and interpretation of the Olympic ceremony is of interest to communication studies and provides an insight into the role of mega-events in globalization processes and opportunities for intercultural exchange and understanding. These contents will be determined through a process of negotiation between stakeholders at local and international levels with different political, economic, social and cultural aims. Through this content analysis the Olympic ceremonies are identified as constructed communication spaces that combine universal humanistic messages, Olympic protocol and discourse, displays of nationhood, and global and local cultural contents. Reflections are made by way of conclusion to identify the challenges facing the ceremonies' organizers for Beijing 2008 and how threats to intercultural understanding could be tackled. Objective: To conduct and evaluate Quit & Win contests at 2 2-year college and 2 4-year university campuses. Participants: During Spring semester, 2006, undergraduates (N = 588) interested in quitting smoking signed up for a Quit & Win 30-day cessation contest for a chance to win a lottery prize. Methods: Participants (N = 588) completed a baseline survey, provided a urine sample to verify smoking status before joining the contest, and completed a follow-up survey at contest end to assess abstinence. Participants reporting continuous 30-day abstinence were surveyed again 2 weeks post contest to assess relapse. Results: Participants smoked an average of 9.8 ± 6.7 cigarettes/day on 26.7 ± 5.7 days/month. Among participants completing a follow-up survey (74%), 72.1% reported abstinence during the entire contest period (Intent-to-Treat Analysis = 53.2%). 55.3% of those abstinent at the end of contest had resumed smoking 2 weeks post contest. Conclusions: Campus Quit & Win contests appear feasible, acceptable, and effective at facilitating short-term abstinence. Oil and gas field boundaries for twelve onshore US study areas were created by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) using the Geographic Information System (GIS) software ArcGIS 8.3 as part of the EIA's role in implementing provisions of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA). The resultant field boundaries were then intersected with Federal land coverages to determine the portion of each field located on Federal land, leading to estimation of the proved oil and gas reserves located on Federal lands of the study areas. Owing to inconsistencies regarding the type, vintage, and coverage of existing public source boundaries the EIA had to construct new field boundaries. These were created by (1) buffering the field's wells at a radius based on the observed inter-well spacing, (2) unioning the well buffers to make one polygon outline per field, and (3) applying a novel algorithm to acceptably smooth the boundaries while ensuring that the increase in total outlined area remained minimal. Children from the People's Republic of China and from the United States were asked to judge younger and older adults. Children's impression and memory for these adults was examined, along with their ability to use information presented about the adults to judge them. How stable children thought traits were about an adult as that adult ages, and how well children recalled information that was consistent or inconsistent with age stereotypes, was also examined. Additionally, the relationship between children's experiences with older adults, and their views of older adults, was assessed. Although 10-year-old American children were more negative about older adults than other children, 6-and 10-year-old children in both the People's Republic of China and the United States expressed negative views of older adults. However, these negative views, or age stereotypes, were more readily found when the task required a comparison between younger and older adults, even when that comparison was for the same person as a younger and older person. Although children were more positive in their views of the adults following the presentation of positive information, children did not necessarily see these characteristics as being stable, especially if they ran counter to stereotype. This was particularly true for the 6-year-old children. These results are discussed in terms of the formation and counter-formation of age stereotypes in children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Contexts of risk for and protection from exposure to violence were identified and the relation to exposure to violence to delinquent behaviors and symptoms of trauma was examined. Using the Experience Sampling Method (ESM), the immediate daily experience of risky and protective contexts was examined. One hundred sixty-seven African American 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade children from urban neighborhoods carried watches and booklets for 1 week. Structural equation modeling supported the hypotheses that more time in risky contexts and less time in protective contexts was related to more exposure to violence. Exposure to violence partially mediated the relation of time in protective and risky contexts to delinquent behaviors, assessed with the Juvenile Delinquency Scale and the Child Behavior Checklist, and distress levels, assessed by a posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) score. Concern about declining trends in coral reef habitats and reef fish stocks in the Florida Keys contributed to the implementation of a network of no-take marine protected areas in 1997. In support of the efforts of the Dry Tortugas National Park and Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary to implement additional no-take areas in the Tortugas region in 2001, we expanded the scale of our fisheries independent monitoring program for coral reef fishes in the region. To provide a foundation for the habitat-based, stratified random sampling design of the program, we created a digital benthic habitat map of coral reef and hard-bottom habitats in a geographic information system by synthesizing data from bathymetric surveys, side-scan sonar imagery, aerial photogrammetry, existing habitat maps, and in situ visual surveys. Existing habitat maps prior to 1999 were limited to shallow-water (< 20 m depth) soft-sediment, coral reef, and hard-bottom habitats within Dry Tortugas National Park and did not include deeper areas such as the Tortugas Bank, now partially contained within no-take marine protected area boundaries. From diver observations made during the 1999 survey, we developed a classification scheme based on habitat relief and patchiness to describe nine hard-bottom and coral reef habitats encountered from 1-33 m depth. We provide estimates of area by habitat type for no-take marine protected areas in the Tortugas region. Updated information on the spatial distribution and characteristics of benthic habitats will be used to guide future monitoring, assessment, and management activities in the region.
