Pure Tone Audiograms (PTA) threshold and clinical outcomes of hearing recovery were compared. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between hearing recovery and potential risk factors.Compared to the control group, the observation group had a higher overall effective rate (p = 0.006) and improvement in PTA threshold (p = 0.007). Among SSNHL patients with high-frequency and flat-type hearing loss, observation group demonstrated superior hearing recovery post-treatment compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Additionally, hearing recovery in patient with SSNHL were associated with SSNHL types, disease duration, neutrophil count and acupuncture (p < 0.05).Combining batroxobin and acupuncture treatments enhences the improvement of hearing recovery in SSNHL patients compared to only batroxobin treatments, especially high-frequency and flat-type hearing loss. To investigate retrospectively the frequency of usage of bimodal stimulation among cochlear implant (CI) users, as well its clinical benefit relative to unilateral use. All subjects had been monitored with the clinical Minimal Outcome Measurements test battery. 103 adults with bilateral postlingual profound sensorineural hearing loss and unilateral CI use were extracted from the local database. These were divided into two groups: those who only used a CI and those who used bimodal stimulation. The preoperative contralateral residual hearing in the bimodal group was significantly better than that of the CI-only group. In both groups, speech perception in quiet and in noise improved after CI, with no significant difference between postoperative unimodal conditions. For the bimodal group, an additional significant improvement was found for the bimodal condition compared to the unimodal. Given the observed auditory benefit of bimodal stimulation in comparison to unimodal stimulation and given the finding that degree of residual hearing is not correlated with bimodal benefits, it is recommended to encourage CI recipients to continue contralateral HA use after CI. The aim of the research was to evaluate the feasibility of measuring the bone conduction hearing threshold using self-administered mobile audiometry. A single-centre, closed, cross-over trial was carried out on patients from the ENT Department. A mobile-based, self-administered, audiologist-assisted assessment of the bone conduction hearing threshold was carried out by means of the open-access, freeware app Hearing Test using two types of bone conduction headphones: professional B71 bone transducer and commercially available AfterShokz Openmove open-ear headphones. Seventy-seven ears. A test-retest examination revealed the lowest standard deviation for open-ear headphones at 3.33 dB (95% CI 2.92–3.79). When compared with pure tone audiometry, the intraclass correlations of 0.95 (95% CI 0.94–0.96) and 0.90 (95% CI 0.88–0.92) were obtained for the bone transducer and for the open-ear headphones, indicating excellent and good reliability, respectively. However, the regression slope of 0.67 was found for the air-bone gap when using open ear headphones, which was significantly different from 1 (p < 0.001). Open-ear headphones provide an alternative for estimating bone conduction once the air-bone gap has been adjusted by a factor of 1/0.6 7 ≅1.5. They demonstrate improved reproducibility over the bone transducer and are much easier to use with a mobile device. Consumer-grade insert earphones (IEs) can be utilised for audiometry, but their calibration values and threshold reliability may differ from the audiometric IE. This study measured the equivalent threshold sound pressure levels (ETSPLs), and the test-retest threshold variation when a consumer IE (Sennheiser CX100) was fitted with: (1) silicone stock ear tips that came along with the earphone, (2) replacement foam ear tips (KZ acoustics) and (3) silicone otoacoustic emission (OAE) probe ear tips. Study 1 determined ETSPL values in 25 normal-hearing subjects aged 18–25 years at seven test frequencies (500–8000 Hz). Study 2 assessed the intra- and inter-session test-retest threshold reliability in a separate group of 50 adult subjects. The ETSPL values for the consumer IE deviated from the reference values for audiometric IEs, with the largest differences (7–9 dB) observed at 500 Hz across ear tips. This is likely related to shallow tip insertions. However, test-retest threshold variations were comparable to those reported for audiometric transducers. Ear tip-specific corrections to the reference thresholds in the standards are required for calibration of consumer IEs used in low-cost audiometry when their ear tips only allow superficial insertion into the ear canal. The subject presented with sudden sensorineural hearing loss and diplacusis a day after onset. Testing involved detailed interview, standard audiometry, detailed inter-octave audiometry, and measurement of detailed psychophysical frequency tuning curves during a two day recovery period.One male aged in his thirties with otherwise normal hearing.Although standard audiometry was within normal limits, detailed inter-octave audiometry and psychophysical frequency tuning curves were consistent with a punctate unilateral intra-cochlear lesion that resolved over a period of three days.This is the first report of such a frequency-specific audiometric shift and diplacusis after sildenafil, and is not consistent with previous reports of direct ototoxic pharmacological effects. We propose that the lesion was most likely caused by a cochlear bleed, and may have been due to physical exertion rather than a direct pharmaceutical effect. IntroductionCase ReportConclusionIn addition to sensorineural hearing loss, Waardenburg Syndrome (WS) may present with variable pigmentation of skin and choroid, which may simulate other life-threating conditions (e.g. melanoma).Two siblings ostensibly presented with unilateral choroidal pigmentary abnormalities concerning for choroidal tumour. Serial ophthalmic examination documented no lesion growth (base or height) whilst the apparent syndromic features (i.e. iris hypochromia, profound sensorineural hearing loss, SNHL), family history (autosomal dominant inheritance) and positive genetic testing (pathogenic MITF variant) led to a revised diagnosis of Waardenburg Syndrome type 2A.Sectoral preservation of choroidal pigmentation in WS is rarely associated with choroidal malignancy. Awareness of syndromic features (e.g. SNHL) and access to genetic testing may facilitate early accurate diagnosis (i.e. allay concern for malignancy), enable treatment of modifiable features (e.g. SNHL) and identify other affected relatives. Objective:Methods:Results:Conclusion:This study emphasizes the role of preoperative high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) temporal bone in evaluating the variation in cochlear orientation and proposes a grading system to determine the level of intraoperative difficulties encountered.Preoperative correlation of middle ear and inner ear structures along with the basal turn angle (BTA) was done to assess the orientation. Patients were divided into three groups depending on BTA and radiology findings.Group A (BTA = 55°-60°) had statistically significant (p < 0.05) correlation between middle ear to inner ear structures on HRCT, whereas group B (BTA >60°) and C (BTA <55°) had variations in the alignment of middle ear structures to their corresponding inner ear structures.The association of BTA to the correlation between middle ear and inner ear structures can determine the orientation of the cochlea. This study investigated the adjustment behaviour of hearing aid (HA) users participating in a semi-supervised self-adjustment fine-tuning procedure for HAs. The aim was to link behaviour with the reproducibility and duration of the adjustments. Participants used a two-dimensional user interface to identify their HA gain preferences while listening to realistic sound scenes presented in a laboratory environment. The interface allowed participants to adjust amplitude (vertical axis) and spectral slope (horizontal axis) simultaneously. Participants were clustered according to their interaction with the user interface, and their search directions were analysed. Twenty older experienced HA users were invited to participate in this study. We identified four different archetypes of adjustment behaviour (curious, cautious, semi-browsing, and full-on browsing) by analysing the trace points of all measurements for each participant. Furthermore, participants used predominantly horizontal or vertical paths when searching for their preference. Neither the archetype, nor the search directions, nor the participants' technology commitment was predictive of the reproducibility or the adjustment duration. The findings suggest that enforcement of a specific adjustment behaviour or search direction is not necessary to obtain fast, reliable self-adjustments. The ear's spectral resolution or frequency selectivity (FS) is a fundamental aspect of hearing but is not routinely measured in clinical practice. This study evaluated a simplified FS testing procedure for clinical use by replacing the time-consuming two-interval forced choice (2IFC) method with method of limits (MOL) carried out using a custom-made software and consumer-grade equipment. Study 1 compared the FS measure obtained with MOL and 2IFC procedure at two centre frequencies (CFs) (1 and 4 kHz) in 21 normal-hearing listeners. Study 2 determined the FS measure using MOL at five CFs (0.5–8 kHz) in 32 normal-hearing and nine sensorineural hearing loss listeners and compared them with their thresholds in quiet. FS measurements with MOL and 2IFC methods were highly correlated and had statistically comparable intra-subject test-retest reliability. FS measures determined with MOL were reduced in the hearing-impaired compared to normal-hearing listeners at the CF corresponding to their hearing loss. Linear regression analysis showed significant relationship between FS deterioration and quiet threshold loss (p < 0.0001, R2 = 0.56). AbstractThe use of antioxidants could thus prove an effective medication to prevent or facilitate recovery from oxidative stress-induced sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). One promising strategy to prevent SNHL is developing probucol (PB)-based nanoparticles using encapsulation technology and administering them to the inner ear via the established intratympanic route. The preclinical, clinical and epidemiological studies support that PB is a proven antioxidant that could effectively prevent oxidative stress in different study models. Such findings suggest its applicability in preventing oxidative stress within the inner ear and its associated neural cells. However, several hurdles, such as overcoming the blood-labyrinth barrier, ensuring sustained release, minimising systemic side effects and optimising targeted delivery in the intricate inner ear structures, must be overcome to efficiently deliver PB to the inner ear. This review explores the background and pathogenesis of hearing loss, the potential of PB in treating oxidative stress and its cellular mechanisms, and the obstacles linked to inner ear drug delivery for effectively introducing PB to the inner ear. AbstractUsher syndrome (USH) is a genetic disorder that is characterized by sensorineural hearing loss (HL) and visual abnormality, i.e., loss of night vision and side (peripheral) vision. Usher syndrome is categorized into four subtypes (USH1, USH2, USH3, USH4) on the basis of phenotypic spectrum. Profound hearing loss (HL), vestibular are flexia and language disturbance are typically associated with Usher type 1, while USH2 is linked with moderate to severe level of congenital HL. USH3 has late onset of deafness in life (referred to as “postlingual”), inconstant vestibular abnormality and onset of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) typically in 2nd decade of life. Patients with USH4 have no vestibular impairment and have late onset of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and sensorineural hearing loss. Until now, 15 genetic loci have been reported to be linked with all types of USH. Among reported USH loci, nine are related to be involved in USH1, three in USH2, two in USH3 and one locus in USH4, respectively. Current review has described different types of Usher syndrome and their molecular genetics, and role of usher proteins in sensory organs. Moreover, we also suggested certain candidate genes for uncharacterized loci that may help the molecular geneticist to reach their target easily. PurposeCase ReportConclusionThis study describes how the diagnosis of Usher syndrome was revised to PRPS1-associated retinopathy and Charcot—Marie—Tooth disease type 5.A 38-year-old female with bilaterally subnormal vision and non-congenital hearing loss was initially diagnosed with Usher syndrome, based on finding variants in three genes (MYO7A, USH2A, and PCDH15), was re-evaluated at the inherited retinal disorders clinic. She had asymmetric retinopathy and right macular pseudocoloboma. She was also found to have myopathic facies, poor grip strength and atrophy of the calf muscles. Whole exome sequencing including variants in PRPS1 showed a variant (NM_002764.4:c.287 G > A; p.Arg96Gln), which was not detected by targeted Sanger sequencing of the DNA from her mother and sister.The constellation of asymmetric retinopathy and non-congenital hearing impairment should prompt the clinician to search for other diagnoses that may not be covered by an Usher syndrome next generation sequencing panel. Central nervous system involvement by Brucella species is the most morbid form of brucellosis disease. Studies on neurobrucellosis are scarce and limited to case reports and series. Brucella is unable to infect or harm neurons without the assistance of monocytes. This raises the question of whether ceftriaxone-based regimens are effective. The primary aim of this study was to identify, evaluate, and summarize the findings of all relevant individual studies in the past 30 years to help better understand the disease. To achieve this, a broad systematic search was undertaken to identify all relevant records. Epidemiological and clinical features of the disease were assessed by the pooled analysis of descriptive studies. Through a meta-analysis, the treatment period duration was compared between the ceftriaxone-based and oral regimens using Standardized mean differences to measure effect size. 448 patients were included in the Meta-analyses from 5 studies. A moderate positive effect was found for ceftriaxone-based regimens over oral treatments, and there was a significant difference between these two groups (SMD 0.428, 95% CI −0.63 to −0.22, I 2 = 37.64). Neurobrucellosis has a different clinical picture in pediatric patients. The disease is less chronic in children. Fever, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, and abdominal pain were significantly more prevalent symptoms in children, and Convulsions, ascites, sensorineural hearing loss, and papilledema were significantly more prevalent signs in children than adults. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss with vertigo (SHLV) and vestibular neuritis (VN) can result in prolonged dizziness. This study aimed to compare the video head impulse test (vHIT) of patients with SHLV and VN. Fifteen patients with SHLV and 21 patients with VN who visited the Vertigo/Dizziness Center of our hospital between December 2016 and February 2023 were included. vHIT was performed at the time of admission, and the VOR gain and catch up saccade (CUS) in the three types of semicircular canals (SCCs) were analyzed. Pathologic vHIT results were observed most frequently in the posterior SCC (73%), followed by lateral (53%) and anterior (13%) SCCs in the SHLV group. In contrast, pathologic vHIT results were observed most frequently in the lateral SCC (100%), followed by the anterior (43%) and posterior SCC (24%) SCCs in the VN group. Pathological vHIT results in the lateral and posterior SCC showed significant differences between the two groups, but for anterior SCC, no significant differences were found. Comparison of the two vHIT results revealed differences in the SCC dysfunction patterns. Hearing loss is important in the diagnosis and treatment of Meniere's disease (MD). However, little is known about the factors associated with hearing changes in MD. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between hearing prognosis and caloric test (CT) results in MD. Ninety consecutive patients diagnosed with unilateral definite MD underwent pure tone audiometry (PTA) and CT at initial visits, and were re-tested PTA at the 6-month follow-up. Fifty-three of ninety MD patients (58.89%) had abnormal CT results. The change of PTA (cPTA = initial PTA-last PTA) was negatively correlated with canal paresis (CP) values (overall association p = 0.032 and non-linear association p = 0.413). Multivariate linear model showed that as the CP value changed from 0 to 1, the cPTA decreased by −13.31 dB (95% CI: −24.03, −2.6) (p = 0.016). Stratified analysis found that the association was present in MD patients of Stage 1 and 2 (p < 0.05) but not in patients of Stage 3 and 4 (p > 0.05). Elevated CP values may be linked to worse hearing outcomes in MD, especially in Stage 1 and 2 patients. AbstractObjectiveDesignStudy sampleResultsConclusionsApproximately 30–50% of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) patients show poor response to systemic steroid therapy. Additionally, the most appropriate treatment for patients with refractory sudden sensorineural hearing loss (RSSNHL) is unknown. This study aimed to explore the best treatment for RSSNHL.Using a frequentist contrast-based model and PRISMA guidelines, this study compared five salvage regimes: intratympanic injection of steroids (ITS), hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy, post auricle steroid injection (PSI), ITS combined with HBO therapy, and continued systemic steroids.We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases for randomised controlled trials and cohort studies comparing treatment regimens for RSSNHL.Compared with the control group (no additional treatment), PSI and ITS demonstrated significant improvements. The mean hearing gain was greater after PSI (11.1 dB [95% CI, 4.4–17.9]) than after ITS (7.7 dB [95% CI, 4.8–10.7]). When a restricted definition of RSSNHL was used, the ITS + HBO therapy showed the largest difference in improvement for pure tone average compared with the control group (14.5 dB [95% CI, 4.2–25.0]).The administration of either PSI or ITS leads to the greatest therapeutic effect in patients with RSSNHL. There is no comprehensive and up-to-date overview of audiovestibular approach to the posterior fossa tumors in the literature. This paper reviewed the literature relating to tumors at the posterior cranial fossa to find red flags alerting a posterior fossa lesion from audiovestibular perspectives. This review was developed from articles published in those journals listed on the journal citation reports. Through the PubMed database, Embase, Google Scholar, and Cochrane library, 60 articles were finally obtained based on the PRISMA guidelines for reporting reviews. The presence of one red flag indicates a positive predictive value of 33% for detecting a posterior fossa lesion. Clinical features, namely, 1) mid-frequency sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), 2) bilateral sudden SNHL, and 3) rebound nystagmus may indicate a posterior fossa lesion, representing one, two, and three red flags, respectively. Those with 1) mid-frequency sudden SNHL, 2) bilateral sudden SNHL, and 3) rebound nystagmus trigger one, two, and three red flags, respectively, alerting clinicians the possibility of a posterior fossa lesion, which warrant MR imaging to exclude life-threatening or treatable conditions. Intratympanic administration for the delivery of steroids has been extensively studied but limited because of low permeability of the drug through the row window membrane. Here, to effectively deliver poorly soluble triamcinolone acetonide (TA), microemulsions (ME) were prepared from Capmul MCM (oil), Cremophor RH40 (surfactant), and tetraglycol (cosurfactant) based on solubility studies, emulsifying ability test, and pseudoternary phase diagrams. Microemulsion gel (MEG) was prepared by mixing TA-ME with a poloxamer hydrogel base. The physicochemical properties of ME and MEG formulations were characterized, and the toxicity and oto-protective effectiveness were evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The ME-3 formulation showed a small droplet size (16.5 ± 0.2 nm), narrow PDI (0.067 ± 0.041), and enhanced TA solubility (2619.7 ± 57.6 μg/g). The optimized MEG demonstrated temperature-dependent gelation with a gelation time of 208 ± 10 sec at 37 °C. Slow degradation of the gel matrix sustained release of TA from MEG compared to the ME formulation. Both TA-ME and TA-MEG were found to be nontoxic to NIH3T3 cells at the test concentrations (0 to 5 µg/mL), and biocompatible after intratympanic administration to mice. The incorporation of ME into thermosensitive hydrogels prolonged retention of TA at the site of administration until 6 days. As a consequence, the enhanced drug absorption into the cochlea in TA-MEG group (approximately 2 times higher than other groups) protected hair cells, spiral ganglion neurons, and stria vascular cells from cisplatin-induced damage. Ginkgo biloba Linn (Ginkgoaceae) [leaves extract (GBE)] is authorized for the treatment of sudden hearing loss (SHL); however, its clinical feasibility in SHL has not been thoroughly investigated. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of adjuvant GBE in the treatment of SHL. We used PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, Chinese Scientific Journal Database, China Biomedical Database for literature research, starting from inception to 30 June 2022. The key terms: Ginkgo biloba extract, Sudden Sensorineural Deafness. This meta-analysis contained randomized controlled trials that compared the safety and efficacy of the combination of GBE and general treatments (GT) with GT alone for SHL. The extracted data were analyzed using Revman5.4 software with risk ratio (RR), 95% confidence intervals (CI) and mean difference (MD). Our meta-analysis included 27 articles with a total of 2623 patients. The results revealed that the effects of GBE adjuvant therapy was superior than GT (total effective rate: RR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.18–1.26, p < 0.00001), the pure tone hearing threshold (MD = 12.29, 95% CI: 11.74–12.85, p < 0.00001) and hemorheology indexes (whole blood high shear viscosity: MD = 1.46, 95% CI: 0.47–2.44, p = 0.004) after treatment were significantly improved compared to non-treatment, while there was no significant difference as for hematocrit (red blood cells) (MD = 4.15, 95% CI: −7.15–15.45, p = 0.47). To compare cochlear implant (CI) data logging of patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (biSNHL) in various acoustic environments and study the implications of data logging on auditory performance. Retrospective case control study. Adult CI patients with SSD or biSNHL from 2010 to 2021 with usage data collected at 3-, 6-, and 12-months following device activation were identified. The CI listening environment was defined as speech in noise, speech in quiet, quiet, music or noise. Auditory performance was measured using the CNC word, AzBio sentence tests and the Tinnitus Handicap Index (THI). 60 adults with SSD or biSNHL were included. CI patients with biSNHL wore their devices more than those with SSD at 3-months post-activation (11.18 versus 8.97 hours/day, p = 0.04), though there were no significant differences at 6-12 months. Device usage was highest in the speech in quiet environment. In SSD CI users, there was a positive correlation (p = 0.03) between device use and CNC scores at 12-months and an improvement in THI scores at 12-months (p = 0.0004). CI users with SSD and biSNHL have comparable duration of device usage at longer follow-up periods with greatest device usage recorded in speech in quiet environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In pure tone audiometry, when the difference of the Average Air Conduction Threshold of pure tone (AACT) between bilateral ears is more than 40 dB HL masking must be performed on the poor side, However, we found that masking also make significance difference when the binaural AACT difference (AACT-d)was less than 40 dB HL in some patients. Assessing the significance of masking for the poor ear in pure tone audiometry in patients with different types of deafness to obtain preoperative accurate hearing. A comparative analysis of 163 cases (163 ears) with hearing difference between two ears was conducted, who were divided into three groups: G1 Congenital Malformation of the Middle and Outer Ear (CMMOE)as conductive deafness, 63 ears, G2 sudden deafness as sensorineural deafness, 65 ears, and G3 media otitis as conductive or mixed deafness,35 ears. AACT-d before and after the poor ear masking was analyzed under the following three conditions: (1) 0.125–8 KHz each frequency, (2) 0.5–4 KHz on average, (3) the frequencies of AACT-d ≥ 40 dB HL and <40 dB HL between the two ears before masking. If the sample data did not follow a normal distribution, the Wilcoxon rank sum test was used for comparasion of AACT, and p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. It is clinically effective for AACT-d ≥ 15 dB HL at 1 frequency or 10 dB HL ≤ AACT-d at 2 frequencies <15 dB HL before and after masking. Among the three groups, (1) the comparasion of AACT-d before and after the poor ear masking for each frequency of 0.125–8 KHz and 0.5–4 KHz on average with all p < 0.05, and the AACT-d of the G1 group was the largest, with an average 0.5–4KHz of 7.5 dB HL, and the first two were 14.5 dB HL and 13.8 dB HL at 0.125 KHz and 0.25 KHz, respectively. (2) AACT-d ≥ 40 dB HL and <40 dB HL between the two ears before masking were distributed at the full frequency of 0.125–8KHz, the clinically effective rates of ≥40 dB HL groups were G1 (89.3%), G2 (45.5%) and G3 (5.3%), while those of < 40 dB HL groups were G1 (69.7%), G2 (34.4%) and G3 (31.3%), respectively. For all three groups, there was statistically significant in AACT-d before and after the poor ear masking across each frequency of 0.125–8 KHz and on average 0.5–4 KHz. The distribution of AACT-d ≥ 40 dB HL and <40 dB HL between the two ears before masking was observed throughout the full frequency range of 0.125–8 KHz. AACT-d before and after the poor ear masking showed clinical effectiveness in all three groups, with the highest effective rate observed in the G1 group and the highest AACT-d at 0.125 KHz and 0.25 KHz. Therefore, regardless of whether the AACT-d between the two ears before masking is ≥40 dB HL or <40 dB HL, the full frequency masking should be employed in three groups, especially for the G1 group of CMMOE, particularly at 0.125 KHz and 0.25 KHz. Background: There is no report on the relationship between congenital malformation of the outer ear and hearing, which makes it possible to predict the hearing level just based on microtia grades. Aims/Objectives: To investigate the correlation between two types of congenital malformation of the outer ear [microtia and Outer Ear Canal Malformation (OECM)] and hearing, as well as the interrelationship among all three variables. Material and methods: A total of 535 cases (598 ears) of congenital malformation of the middle and outer ear (CMMOE) with hearing data, out of which 319 cases (349 ears) microtia with available images and graded by I–V, 449 cases (482 ears) OECM graded by atresia, stenosis and normal, and 87 cases (87 ears) OEC atresia graded I–IV, 301 cases (301 ears) with materials of microtia, OECM and hearing at the same time were carried out correlation analysis. The Average Air-Conduction Threshold of pure tone (AACT) at 0.5–4 KHz was calculated corresponding to the ears with different malformation grades. The differences in AACT among different malformation grades, the correlation between malformation severity and AACT, as well as the relationship among microtia, OECM and AACT were analyzed. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to compare the differences in AACT, Kendall's tau-b rank correlation coefficient test was used for correlation analysis. A statistical significance level of p < 0.05 was applied. Results: Among the 349 ears with microtia, the corresponding AACT values for grades I to V were 61.6, 63.0, 69.9, 75.4, and 75.0 (dB HL), respectively. Comparing grade III to grades II or IV, both p < 0.05. However, p > 0.05 between grade I and II or between grade IV and V. The correlation coefficient between microtia grades and AACT r = 0.219, p < 0.05. Among the 482 ears of OECM, the distribution was as follows: 73.6% atresia, 19.1% stenosis, and 7.3% normal, the corresponding AACT values were 64.1, 61.7, and 52.5 (dB HL), respectively. Comparing normal to stenosis or atresia, both p < 0.05, while between atresia and stenosis p > 0.05. The correlation between OECM and AACT was r = 0.104, p < 0.05. The AACT values corresponding to grades I to IV of OEC atresia in the 87 ears were 59.9, 65.1, 71.1, and 64.1 (dB HL), respectively. Comparing these grades, all p > 0.05. The correlation between the degree of atresia and AACT r = 0.23, p < 0.05. The correlation coefficients for 301 ears microtia to OECM, microtia to AACT, OECM to AACT were r = 0.339, r = 0.163 and r = 0.128 respectively, with all p < 0.05. Conclusion and significance: There are positive correlations among the degree of microtia, degree of OECM, and AACT values for each other, and so between the degree of OEC atresia and AACT, suggesting that as the severity of microtia or OECM increased, the AACT also tended to be higher, which make it possible to predict the hearing level and the degree of OECM based on microtia grades in clinical practice. Additionally, there are significant differences in AACT values in microtia grade III to grades II or IV, OEC normal to stenosis or atresia, while no differences in microtia grade I to II and grade IV to V, OEC stenosis to atresia, and among the grades I–IV of the OEC atresia. Background: There is no study on the hearing features of congenital malformation of middle and outer ears (CMMOE), including classification, grades, and frequency characteristics, which play a decisive role in the selection of precise hearing solutions for patients. Aims/Objectives: To analyze the hearing features of CMMOE and provide guidance for clinical practice.Material and Methods: 298 cases (351 ears) with CMMOE were retrospectively analyzed for the features of 0.5 ∼ 4KHz pure tone hearing, including the classification, grades and frequency characteristics. Results: We observed conductive deafness in 84.3% (296/351), mixed deafness in 15.7% (55/351), and 0% (0/351) sensorineural deafness. Grades measured by average Air Conduction Thresholds (ACT) of pure tone: Mild deafness (26–40dB HL) 0.6% (2/351), moderate deafness (41–55dB HL) 10.3% (36/351), moderate to severe deafness (56–70dB HL) 46.1%(162/351), severe deafness (71–90dB HL) 39.9%(140/351), extremely severe deafness (> 90 dB HL) 3.1%(11/351). The average ACT of 296 ears conductive deafness was 67 ± 10 dB HL, of which 56-80dB HL accounted for 78.1% (274/351). In 55 ears with mixed deafness, 32 ears (32/55 = 58.2%) increased Bone Conduction Threshold (BCT) at a single frequency, and out of 32 ears, 31ears (31/55 = 56.4%) ≤40dB HL, 25(25/32 = 78.1%) ears at 2KHz. In 55 ears with mixed deafness, 87.3% (48/55) increased BCT at 2KHz, and the average BCT was 35 ± 10dB HL. Conclusions and Significance: CMMOE result mainly in conductive deafness, moderate to severe and severe deafness. In mixed deafness, the BCT increased mainly at a single frequency, 2KHz and ≤40dB HL. Acute audiovestibular deficits may be a harbinger of vestibular schwannoma (VS). To investigate clinical and laboratory features of 25 consecutive patients with VS presenting with acute audiovestibular deficits. A symptomatic combination of acute audiovestibular deficits was investigated. Audiometric and vestibular function tests, and internal auditory canal magnetic resonance imaging (IAC MRI) results were evaluated. Varying combinations of symptoms may develop in VS patients with acute audiovestibular deficits, of whom sudden hearing loss (HL) without acute vertigo or acute facial nerve palsy (FNP) was most common. The most common audiometric configuration was high-tone hearing loss, and no patient showed low-tone hearing loss. IAC MRI demonstrated that the tumor had an intracanalicular portion and attachment to the bony IAC wall in all patients and widened the IAC wall in some patients. Different symptomatic combinations of acute audiovestibular deficits may develop in patients with VS. Awareness about the possibility of VS as a cause of sudden HL, acute vertigo, and acute FNP, as well as subsequent IAC MRI scanning is vital to earlier diagnosis of VS in these patients. Working memory refers to a cognitive system that holds a limited amount of information in a temporarily heightened state of availability, for use in ongoing cognitive tasks. Research suggests a link between working memory and speech recognition. In this study, we investigated this relationship using two working memory tests that differed in regard to the operationalisation of the link between working memory and attention: the auditory visual divided attention test (AVDAT) and the widely used reading span test. The relationship between speech-in-noise recognition and working memory was examined for two different working memory tests that varied in methodological and theoretical aspects, using a within-subject design. Nineteen hearing-impaired older listeners participated. We found a strong link between the reading span test and speech-in-noise recognition and a less robust link between the AVDAT and speech-in-noise recognition. There was evidence for the role of selective attention in speech-in-noise recognition, shown via the new AVDAT measure. Our findings suggest that the strength of the relationship between speech-in-noise recognition and working memory may be influenced by the match between the demands and the stimuli of the speech-in-noise task and those of the working memory test. Hearing loss commonly causes difficulties in understanding speech in the presence of background noise. The benefits of hearing-aids in terms of speech intelligibility in challenging listening scenarios remain limited. The present study investigated if phoneme-in-noise discrimination training improves phoneme identification and sentence intelligibility in noise in hearing-aid users. Two groups of participants received either a two-week training program or a control intervention. Three phoneme categories were trained: onset consonants (C1), vowels (V) and post-vowel consonants (C2) in C1-V-C2-/i/ logatomes from the Danish nonsense word corpus (DANOK). Phoneme identification test and hearing in noise test (HINT) were administered before and after the respective interventions and, for the training group only, after three months. Twenty 63-to-79 years old individuals with a mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss and at least one year of experience using hearing-aids. The training provided an improvement in phoneme identification scores for vowels and post-vowel consonants, which was retained over three months. No significant performance improvement in HINT was found. The study demonstrates that the training induced a robust refinement of auditory perception at a phoneme level but provides no evidence for the generalisation to an untrained sentence intelligibility task. Cochlear implant is an effective choice to recover hearing for patients with sensorineural deafness. With the development of society, people's demand for cochlear implants in all aspects is increasing. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film is a kind of high polymer with excellent properties, which has broad application prospects in the field of cochlear implant. This article uses COMSOL software to simulate PVDF films and explore the size effect on the sensor performance. The simulation results show that the eigenfrequency is linearly related to height, meanwhile the vibration mode and electric potential also vary with height. The cochlear sensor is simulated in the range of human ear-sensitive hearing frequency, and the cochlear sensor has excellent piezoelectric properties. Inner ear hemorrhage (IEH) is an increasingly recognized cochlear lesion that can cause sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is known to be the best imaging modality for clarifying the causes of SNHL and providing images that point to those causes. Evaluate the lesional patterns in patients with presumed Inner ear hemorrhage (IEH) from radiological and functional aspects. We retrospectively reviewed 10 patients performed in our institution from 2014 to 2020, with suspected labyrinthine hemorrhage based on radiological and functional examination. We included 8 patients with IEH and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). The median age was 55 years (range: 3 months − 78 years). The results from the MRI and functional tests were compared for each end-organ. Only three cases (37.5%) showed a correlation between signal abnormalities and dysfunction in the labyrinthine apparatus. In patients with SNHL inner ear hemorrhage needs to be ruled out in the differential diagnosis, so specific MRI sequences should be requested. This study aimed to evaluate the association between certain social determinants of health (i.e. educational level, income, and social support) and attitudes towards hearing loss and hearing aids among older adults with hearing loss fitted in a Latin American country. Older adults were asked about their attitudes towards hearing loss and hearing aids, years of formal education, income, social support, perception of having a hearing disability, and social pressure when using the hearing aid. To do so, we adapted the Attitudes towards Loss of Hearing Questionnaire (S-ALHQ) into Spanish. All the questionnaires were conducted as structured interview. Two hundred fifty-two older hearing aids users were recruited from a public hospital in Chile. The S-ALHQ showed adequate validity, along with good reliability. The multivariate models showed that educational level and social support were the social determinants of health negatively associated with the attitudes. Aided hearing disability and social pressure to use hearing aids were the co-variables associated with S-ALHQ scores. The study showed a significant relationship between specific social determinants of health and attitudes towards hearing loss and hearing aids. Immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are being utilized with increasing frequency and may be linked to neurologic and audiovestibular toxicities. This report aimed to describe a case of ICI-induced sensorineural hearing loss ultimately requiring bilateral cochlear implantation. A 42-year-old female with stage IV metastatic melanoma of the perianal skin was treated with ipilimumab (blocker of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte associated protein 4 [CTLA-4]) and nivolumab (anti-programmed cell death protein 1 [PD1]). After 21 weeks of therapy, she developed sudden vertigo and bilateral hearing loss. A full workup including MRI and lumbar puncture ruled out intracranial parenchymal metastases, leptomeningeal metastases, stroke and intracranial infection. ICI-associated aseptic meningoencephalitis was therefore diagnosed. The patient received systemic steroids as well as intratympanic steroids, which temporarily improved hearing, but eventually developed permanent, bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss. The patient received bilateral cochlear implants and has demonstrated good performance one year after implantation. ICI are being increasingly used to treat a variety of advanced malignancies. This is the first report of bilateral cochlear implants in the context of profound hearing loss after an immunotherapy induced meningoencephalitis. ICI carries the risk of potential ototoxicity, including profound SNHL as depicted in our case. Vestibular function (VF) in patients with cochlear implantation (CI) performed during childhood is underinvestigated To study VF in patients receiving CI during childhood Sixty patients (22 females) from 7–34 years old, unilaterally (n = 21) and bilaterally (n = 39) implanted, were included. Deafness was congenital (n = 45), consequential to meningitis (n = 3), skull fracture (n = 1), perinatal CMV infection (n = 1), ototoxic drugs (n = 1), unknown etiology (n = 9). VF was measured between 1 to 22 years after implantation, including calorics, v-HIT, c-VEMPS. Dizziness handicap inventory (DHI), age at independent walking(IW), sport activities were also investigated. Nine CI-patients (15%) reported dizziness/vertigo either prior or months to years after surgery. Comparison between symptomatic (15%), asymptomatic (85%), uni-bilaterally CI-patients showed no significant difference on VF's impairment for calorics (p =.603) and v-HIT (p = 1). Symptoms were not related to vestibular impairment. Age at implantation (p = 0.956), uni- bilateral (p =.32), simultaneous versus sequential (p =.134) did not influence IW age. DHI showed a tendency for being symptomatic at higher implantation age. Interval between CI, IWage, current age between surgery and vestibular evaluation did not have a significant effect on symptomatology. This first middle to long-term evaluation of the VF in CI-patients, implanted in childhood, pointed out that 85% of patients were asymptomatic, with a mean time of >10 years after surgery. To investigate the implications of Parkinson's disease (PD) in the peripheral auditory system, a systematic survey of the scientific literature was conducted. Systematic review. An electronic search of the non-gray literature in the last decade was conducted using the digital databases MEDLINE® (PubMed interface), LILACS® (Virtual Health Library), Web of Science® (CAPES publications portal), and SciELO®. Studies addressing peripheral auditory function as part of the range of nonmotor PD symptoms were selected for analysis. Pure tone audiometry data suggested that sensorineural hearing loss was more severe in the PD population than in the control groups. The effects of PD on cochlear function were evidenced by a decrease in the levels of otoacoustic emissions. Sensorineural hearing loss and cochlear impairment are more severe in the PD population than in the control groups. Additional studies are recommended to further understand the characteristics of the peripheral auditory system in PD patients, which constitutes an emerging subject in the scientific literature. To study patient-reported hearing aid (HA) rehabilitation outcomes, social-communicative functioning, and expectations/experiences during eight months of HA use. Three self-reporting instruments, the International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA), the Quantified Denver Scale of Communicative Function (QDS), and questionnaires tapping pre-rehabilitation expectations (HA-EXP-Q1) and post-rehabilitation experiences (HA-EXP-Q2) were administered. 144 patients ages 23–66 with gradually acquired, adult-onset, mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss affecting both ears who acquired their first HAs. According to self-reports, HA rehabilitation outcomes were good, and everyday social-communicative functioning improved after one month and after eight months of HA use. When the effects from demographic and audiological variables were analysed, younger age and positive expectations of HAs were associated with better outcomes and social-communicative functioning. The form or hearing loss severity, and the type or number of HAs did not affect outcomes. Working-age HA users reported better HA outcomes than older adults in previous studies. Coping in work life may be a strong motivator for active HA use. Considering that younger age and positive expectations resulted in better outcomes, early rehabilitation that supports positive and realistic expectations of HA performance is essential. Pkhd1l1 is predicted to encode a very large type-I transmembrane protein, but its function has largely remained obscure. Recently, it was shown that Pkhdl1l1 is a component of the coat that decorates stereocilia of outer hair cells in the mouse ear. Consistent with this localization, conditional deletion of Pkhd1l1 specifically from hair cells, was associated with progressive hearing loss. In the zebrafish, there are two paralogous pkhd1l1 genes - pkhd1l1α and pkhd1l1β. Using CRISPR-Cas9 mediated gene editing, we generated loss-of-function alleles for both and show that the double mutants exhibit nonsense-mediated-decay (NMD) of the RNAs. With behavioural assays, we demonstrate that zebrafish pkhd1l1 genes also regulate hearing; however, in contrast to Pkhd1l1 mutant mice, which develop progressive hearing loss, the double mutant zebrafish exhibited statistically significant hearing loss even from the larval stage. Our data highlight a conserved function of Pkhd1l1 in hearing and based on these findings from animal models, we postulate that PKHD1L1 could be a candidate gene for sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in humans. The cochlea contains a robust biological clock associated with auditory function, exhibiting diurnal sensitivity to noise or ototoxicity We examined the relationship between disrupted circadian rhythm and altered expression of circadian clock genes in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and explored whether the circadian clock genes serve as prognostic biomarkers. Twelve patients with SSNHL were enrolled study group. Twelve people with normal hearing were enrolled voluntarily for comparison. Audiological evaluation was performed to evaluate hearing thresholds. Korean version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Questionnaire was performed to evaluate sleep quality and patterns. Circadian clock genes including for PERI, PER2, PER3, CRYI, CRY2, CLOCK, ARNTL, CSNKIE, and TIMELESS expression in blood were evaluated using real-time quantitative PCR method. Compared with healthy controls without hearing loss, most of the circadian clock genes were markedly downregulated, coupled with low sleep quality and disturbing patterns, in patients with SSNHL. Intriguingly, a weak correlation between hearing improvement following steroid treatment and altered levels of circadian clock genes was observed. This study investigated the role of serum osmolality in Meniere's disease (MD) patients with acute sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Retrospective study. Twenty definite MD patients with acute unilateral SNHL were treated with an osmotic diuretic (Isosorbide, 100 mL daily) and assigned to Group A. Another 20 age- and sex-matched definite MD patients with acute SNHL were not given Isosorbide and assigned to Group B. Both groups underwent audiometry and blood examination for serum osmolality before and after treatment. Group A revealed a significant increase in serum osmolality after treatment. The optimal cut-off values for increased serum osmolality in Group A were +1.5 mOSM/L for predicting hearing improvement at frequencies of 250–1000 Hz, and +2.5 mOSM/L at 2000–4000 Hz. Comparing increased levels of serum osmolality (> +2.0 vs. ≤ +2.0 mOSM/L), Isosorbide dosing at 3.0 L vs. 1.0 L, significantly differed in the odds ratio (OR). Isosorbide at a total dosage of 3.0 L thus improves the hearing threshold by >10 dB at frequencies of 250–2000 Hz. The Isosorbide at a total dosage of 3.0 L may increase serum osmolality by > +2.0 mOSM/L, and improve the hearing threshold for hydropic ears at least >10 dB at low- and mid-frequencies. A small but persistent proportion of individuals do not gain the expected benefit from cochlear implants(CI). A step-change in the understanding of factors affecting outcomes could come through data science. This study evaluates clinical data capture to assess the quality and utility of CI user's health records for data science, by assessing the recording of otitis media. Otitis media was selected as it is associated with the development of sensorineural hearing loss and may affect cochlear implant outcomes. A retrospective service improvement project evaluating the medical records of 594 people with a CI under the care of the University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service between 2014 and 2020. The clinical records are suitable for data science research. Of the cohort studied 20% of Adults and more than 40% of the paediatric cases have a history of middle ear inflammation. Data science has potential to improve cochlear implant outcomes and improve understanding of the mechanisms underlying poor performance, through retrospective secondary analysis of real-world data. Implant centres and the British Cochlear Implant Group National Hearing Implant Registry are urged to consider the importance of consistently and accurate recording of patient data over time for each CI user. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), which is frequently observed in otolaryngology clinics, is characterized by sudden onset hearing loss that can develop within hours or days. Its etiology is still not fully understood. This research aims to identify prognostic biomarkers that can be utilized to assess the progress of SSNHL as well as circumstances that may predispose individuals to the disease. Between 1 January 2019 and 1 October 2020, patients diagnosed with SSNHL in our clinic and a control group consisting of healthy people were examined retrospectively. The files of the groups were examined and the levels of hemoglobin, Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), ferritin, iron, iron binding capacity (UIBC), vitamin D, vitamin B12, folate were statistically compared with the control group. In addition, the effect of the parameters studied in the patient group on the degree of recovery was examined. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of mean age and gender distribution (p >.05). NLR level of the patient group was higher than the control group (p <.05). Vitamin D level of the patient group was lower than the control group (p <.05). NLR and vitamin D levels had no effect on the degree of recovery (p >.05). There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of other parameters (p >.05). We think that our study can be a guide for adding vitamin D as a routine laboratory test in patients with SSNHL. In addition, we think that NLR value can be used as a marker in patients with SSNHL. It is recommended to investigate the role of vitamin D supplementation in better and faster response in these patients. The reasons that predispose to SSNHL are not fully elucidated. However, there is no laboratory marker that can be used in this disease. In our study, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was found to be higher than in healthy people. These results suggest that vitamin D deficiency may be associated with sudden sensorineural hearing loss. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio was found to be higher in the patient group. Tinnitus is one of the most common symptoms of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), with the incidence of tinnitus in patients with SSNHL ranging from 60% to 90%. Little is known, however, about the specific audiologic and hematologic factors that may be associated with the development of tinnitus. To better understand the relationship between tinnitus and SSNHL, the present study compared audiologic and hematologic factors in SSNHL patients with tinnitus and without tinnitus. The present study compared 120 patients with SSNHL with tinnitus and 59 patients with SSNHL without tinnitus at their initial examination. Their audiology and hematologic test results were analyzed, and hearing recovery was determined by comparing the hearing thresholds before and after treatment. 120 patients with tinnitus showed longer III and V latency in auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests, lower signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) at 2 kHz in transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) tests, and lower response rates at 2 kHz in distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) tests of the affected ear (p < 0.05 each) than the 59 patients without tinnitus. However, there were no significant between-group differences in the mean hearing threshold and hearing recovery rate of the affected ear. Patients with tinnitus had significantly worse mean hearing thresholds and hearing thresholds at 4 kHz in the nonaffected ear. The percentages of monocytes and large unstained cells (%LUCs) were higher in the group without tinnitus (p < 0.05), although there were no significant between-group differences in inflammatory markers, such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). Tinnitus accompanying SSNHL may be associated with baseline hearing level, as well as being an indicator of damage to outer hair cells and auditory nerves. Few related studies reported yet the association between vitamins and the onset of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). To explore the relationship between the serum levels of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E and the risk of SSNHL. This retrospective analysis included 310 SSNHL patients and 154 people without risk of hearing loss. The demographic information of all participants like age, gender, body mass index, occupation, cigarette smoking or drinking status, etc. were recorded. The serum levels of vitamins A, D, and E were determined using the electrochemical method. The results indicated that serum vitamin D levels in SSNHL patients were significantly lower. Vitamin D deficiency was only observed in SSNHL group. Similarly, serum vitamin A levels in female SSNHL patients were significantly lower than the control group. Meanwhile, serum vitamin E levels in male SSNHL patients were significantly lower than the control group. Our results revealed that the serum levels of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E in SSNHL patients were lower than those in the control group with normal hearing, indicating that the decrease of serum fat-soluble vitamins may be related to SSNHL pathogenesis. There is evidence of ototoxicity from antiretrovirals (ARVs), and ARV therapy in pregnant/nursing mothers can expose offspring to these compounds. The current work modelled whether exposure to ARVs in utero and during nursing altered the functioning of the auditory system in offspring mice. The females of seven breeding pairs of C57BL6/J mice were given daily doses of ARVs lamivudine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate by oral gavage during gestation and nursing. Three breeder females were given equivalent volumes of water as controls. At wean age (3 weeks after birth), the offspring mice were tested with auditory brainstem responses (ABRs). At the conclusion of the experiment, the offspring mice's cochleae were examined for hair cell counts. Ten breeder female C57BL6/J mice and 69 offspring mice. The offspring mice exposed to ARVs during development showed higher ABR thresholds than the control offspring. No differences were found in supra-threshold ABRs. There was no evidence of missing hair cells. Hearing impairment may be a possible consequence of exposure to ARVs during gestation and development. Because the threshold differences were not large, if they are occurring in humans, it is unlikely they would be identified in any hearing screening tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sudden sensory-neural hearing loss (SSNHL), with positive findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), possibly related to labyrinthine hemorrhage, is a rare condition and difficult to be diagnosed. We evaluated the role of MRI in detecting labyrinthine signal changes and the impact of these changes on the prognosis of SSNHL after the intratympanic corticosteroid injection. A prospective study was held between January and June 2022. We included patients who complained of SSNHL, either idiopathic (30 patients) or labyrinthine signal alterations (14 patients), as diagnosed by MRI performed 15 days after the SSNHL onset. In addition, all patients underwent a course of intratympanic prednisolone injections. 83.3% of the idiopathic group showed a complete or marked improvement after the intratympanic injection. Conversely, most cases of positive MR signal alterations (92.8%) had slight or poor improvement after the therapeutic course. Our study revealed that MRI imaging is essential for assessing any SSNHL case. It can diagnose labyrinthine hemorrhage, whose course and prognosis differ significantly from idiopathic SSNHL. Intratympanic prednisolone injection was effective in managing idiopathic SSNHL. Conventional radiological evaluation does not evaluate the functional status of the auditory pathway in patients scheduled for cochlear implantation (CI). Determine the value of diffusion tensor imaging [DTI] in the preoperative evaluation of some patients scheduled for CI. Patients with profound SNHL and inner ear and/or cochlear nerve anomalies or long standing SNHL were selected. They underwent conventional MRI images of the brain in three orthogonal planes, MR arterial spin labelling (ASL), perfusion, and DTI auditory tractography to determine functional status of the auditory pathways. Ten patients were included. Seven with bilateral SNHL, one with fluctuating hearing loss and one with long standing single sided deafness. In 8 patients the auditory pathway could be traced and functional maps could determine the side of possible better function. In the patient with progressive hearing loss DTI revealed major central pathway problems and CI was discouraged. In the patient with SSD, DTI revealed a robust intact pathway and CI was advised. Although many advantages of endoscopic stapes surgery have been reported, there is little objective data on whether it provides better visualization than the microscopic approach. To evaluate and compare audiological results, external auditory canal wall removal area, and adverse event rates between endoscopic and microscopic stapes surgery. Data from patients who received stapedotomy were collected. Pre and postoperative audiometry, procedure-related parameters, and adverse events were analyzed in conventional microscopic and endoscopic groups. There were no differences in procedure time or postoperative hearing between the endoscopic and microscopic surgery groups. The mean procedure times were 87.3 ± 18.9 min in the endoscopic group and 79.9 ± 23.5 min in the microscopic group. The mean postoperative air-bone gaps were 10.9 ± 8.3 dB in the endoscopic group and 10.5 ± 7.8 dB in the microscopic group. There were no differences in the rate of sensorineural hearing loss, postoperative pain, facial palsy, vertigo, or dysgeusia between the two groups. The bony removal area of the posterosuperior external auditory canal wall measured by two observers was significantly less in the endoscopic group than in the microscopic group. Variations in the protocadherin gene FAT1 have recently been associated with a syndrome that includes coloboma, facial dysmorphism, renal failure, syndactyly, and other developmental defects. Detailed medical and family history, physical examination, and molecular analysis. This non-dysmorphic, intellectually normal 51-year-old woman presented with bilateral colobomata and renal failure of unclear etiology, and asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss. Family history was notable for multiple family members with various forms of cancer. Whole exome sequencing revealed a homozygous frame shift variant in FAT1, predicted to truncate the FAT1 protein at the furthest position in the protein structure published to date in a patient with coloboma. This case provides further evidence of the pleiotropic effects of FAT1 in optic fissure closure and kidney function. Also, because this variant is in the last exon, it would be anticipated to escape nonsense-mediated decay, opening the possibility that the protein is made and expressed, but not completely functional, as its intracellular domain is truncated. There have been few studies to date exploring prognostic outcomes associated with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) in order adults. This investigation was designed to explore the relationship between atherosclerosis-related risk factors and ISSNHL outcomes among older individuals. In total, 172 older adults diagnosed ISSNHL from 2016 to 2021 were retrospectively evaluated to compare demographic and clinical test results. Relative to healthy controls, ISSNHL patients exhibited significant differences in hypertension incidence and factors related to coagulation. With respect to prognosis, age, onset days, hypertension, the degree of hearing loss, type of hearing curve, fibrinogen and D-dimer levels were significant univariate prognostic factors, whereas multivariate logistic analysis showed that hypertension (p =.005) and D-dimer concentration (p =.000) were related to the treatment outcome of older ISSNHL patients. The area under the curve (AUC) for D-dimer levels was 0.795 (95% CI: 0.724–0.866). When using a D-dimer cut-off threshold value of 107.5 ng/mL, the sensitivity and specificity values of 77.0% and 76.7%. The present results indicate that hypertension incidence and D-dimer levels may be presented as an important prognostic indicator in older affected ISSNHL individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to investigate the effect of wearing a face mask on word recognition in hearing-impaired listeners. Word recognition scores were obtained in quiet and in different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs 0, +5, and +10 dB) using two listening conditions (with N95 mask and with no-mask). Participants were forty-six listeners with normal hearing sensitivity and thirty-nine listeners with mild to moderately severe sensorineural hearing loss. Results showed that wearing a face mask affected word recognition and that this effect was greater for listeners with hearing impairment than that observed for listeners with normal hearing sensitivity. The extent of this effect was also dependent on the SNR conditions such that the effect of wearing a face mask was worse in adverse listening conditions. Overall, this study demonstrated that face mask can disrupt speech intelligibility possibly by degrading some acoustical features which may pose substantial difficulties for those with hearing impairment. The present study aimed to clarify the associations between Hearing Aid Self-efficacy (HASE) and other traits such as working memory, personality and hearing aid (HA) experience. Fifty-four adults (both naïve and experienced HA users) were included in this exploratory descriptive study. Their working memory, personality, HASE, HA experience and practical HA skills were evaluated. HA experience had a significant positive association with self-efficacy for basic and advanced HA handling abilities. Working memory and personality traits were not related to HASE. For the experienced HA users, HASE was not related to HA skills. However, the openness personality trait had a significant positive association with HA skills. The positive association between HASE and HA experience supported the theory that HASE might be improved through mastery experiences. Possessing certain cognitive abilities or specific personality traits is not a prerequisite for having high HASE. This study also supports previous findings that HASE is not related to HA skills, bringing into question whether improving HASE will also improve HA outcomes. However, for experienced participants, aspects of personality and cognition might play a role in mediating the association between HASE and HA skills. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The "Marginal benefit from acoustic amplification" version 2 (MBAA2) sentence test has been used in France in the routine evaluation of cochlear implant (CI) users for 20 years. Here we present four studies that characterise and validate the test, and compare it with the French matrix sentence test. An analytic method was developed to obtain speech recognition threshold in noise (SNR50) from testing at a fixed signal to noise ratios (SNRs). Speech recognition was measured at several fixed SNRs in 18 normal-hearing listeners and 15 CI listeners. Then, the test–retest reliability of the MBAA2 was measured in an additional 15 CI listeners. Finally, list equivalence was evaluated in eight CI listeners. The MBAA2 test produced lower SNR50s and SNR50s were obtained in more CI listeners than with the French matrix test. For the MBAA2, the standard deviation of test–retest differences in CI listeners was around 1 dB SNR. Three lists had deviant difficulty and nine low item-to-total correlations. We propose to reduce the number of MBAA2 test lists to reduce variability. The MBAA2 test has high test–retest reliability for percent correct and SNR50, and is suitable for the assessment of cochlear implant patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
