AbstractShared housing in the private rental sector (PRS), where people rent with non-family, is becoming more significant across many countries. However, from a housing justice lens, it is unclear whether housing policies and regulations based on normative understandings of households are equipped to effectively support shared housing renters. Through a case study of Australia, which operates on a ‘consumer protection’ model of rental regulation, we ask how current Australian rental regulations enable or restrict housing justice for people in shared housing in the PRS. We conduct a critical discourse analysis of consumer-oriented tenancy information published by Australian state governments and identify explicit or implicit risks in the text that may be experienced by shared housing renters. Results indicate that risks in relation to finance, eviction, and disputes are variously not acknowledged within the text or responded to with warning, guidance, or stated inability to help. We argue that the unfair distribution of risk in shared households, coupled with the severity of the consequences, constitutes a form of housing injustice. The endowment effect is a behavioral bias; postulating people demand more to part with an object they own than they would offer to acquire the same object owned by others. Recent experimental research, however, suggests that this effect applies to consumption goods rather than exchange goods. Given that housing is a mix of consumption and exchange goods, it presents a unique opportunity to examine whether the effect exists in the real world through a quasi-experiment. Based on a policy change that relaxed the resale constraints of shared ownership housing in Hong Kong, we found that more constrained homeowners were more likely to sell their homes compared to those with fewer constraints when granted the right to exchange, all other factors affecting liquidity being held constant. Over the past two decades, many European countries have witnessed new immigration patterns related to the gradual expansion of the European Union (EU). While migration motives and labour market positions of EU migrants are well-understood, relatively little is known about their housing positions in the hosting countries. Using sequence analyses and logistic regression on longitudinal register data from Statistics Netherlands, this article examines housing trajectories of EU migrants from seven countries in the Netherlands, over an eight-year period (2012–2019). Our results show that, while housing trajectories vary substantially in terms of length of stay in the Netherlands and access to social housing, private renting and homeownership, sharing is at the centre for all migrant groups, both as a temporary and long-term solution. Moreover, we show that varying housing trajectories can partially be explained through contrasting demographic and socio-economic profiles. In Italy there is a growing interest in shared housing driven by various factors, including the need for affordable housing, the desire for communal living and initiatives that target vulnerable individuals. This also extends into the realm of social services, incorporating a residential aspect. This article explores the factors that render two specific forms of living – co-housing and cohabitation – generative and capable of fostering solidarity among inhabitants and their social environment. The focus is on the creation of relationships and solidarity bonds within these living settings. Shared housing can become a valuable resource, embodying a form of generative welfare that aims to overcome traditional welfarism. Research on 'studentification', or the concentration of students in particular neighbourhoods, whether in older shared rental housing or new purpose-built student accommodations, has neglected questions of difference, including gender. Yet while such questions have been the purview of student geographies more broadly, the latter have seldom extended analyses to neighbourhood-scale urban processes. Just as feminist urban geographers have shown gentrification to be a gendered phenomenon, I demonstrate how studentification likewise relies on and (re)produces certain gender relations, drawing on a case study of Waterloo, Canada. Specifically, studentification is linked to women's enrolment trends, masculinist modes of profit-oriented urban development, and gendered discourses of urban safety. The analysis highlights the need for renewed dialogue between disparate literatures on the geography of studentification and student geographies of housing and home to further our understanding of the role of social difference in studentification processes. This paper explores two key themes that have enjoyed increasing attention in geography research in the last twenty years: geographies of care and experiences of precarity. It focuses on the perspectives of residents living in share houses during a strict COVID-19 lockdown in the city of Melbourne, Australia, drawing on 20 interviews conducted in mid-2020. In so doing, it contributes to understandings of care practices in 'non-traditional' households, providing a glimpse into the spectrum of care-full to care-less relations enacted in households responding to deep uncertainty and shifting connections to home brought on by a global pandemic. Within the day-to-day actions of occupants we highlight the networks of small acts of care-giving and resource sharing. We illuminate the spatial, emotional and relational micro-geographies of share houses to identify how precarity is negotiated amongst co-residents and draw attention to the implications of care-less policies and real estate practices. Our research answers the call for a greater emphasis on embodied home-making practices among group households by paying attention to the contingent relationships of care that they house. In recent decades, Japan has been undergoing an extensive societal change, centred mainly on family, employment, and patterns of social interaction. Later and fewer marriages lead to a growing amount of single households; the de-stabilization of employment produces new living conditions; the virtualization of communication generates new formats of interaction, often linked to the problem of alienation, especially among the younger generation. These processes have produced not only objective trends but also a subjective climate of instability, often framed by the discourse on Japan's precarity. A society that for decades has viewed itself as a homogeneous middleclass entity, Japan is still affluent but undergoing a long economic stagnation and, more importantly, increasingly experiencing itself as a fragmented society filled with social maladies. This article explores one outcome of these conditions -- a new form of housing commonly referred to as the 'share house.' It first introduces the 'share house' phenomenon, then places it in the context of changes undergone by Japanese society. I suggest that the 'share house' represents a new institution addressing the growing need for alternative social alliances, particularly among young single adults seeking substitute modes of intimacy and belonging. Shared housing is an important infrastructure for young single professionals living and working in the city. Co-living is a contemporary shared housing infrastructure. But it certainly is not the first. We advocate for what Flanagan and Jacobs (2019) call taking a "long view" by drawing connections between early 19th-century gentlemen's clubs, mid-19th-century residential hotels and contemporary co-living. We argue each have been dynamic infrastructures of mobility, work, and sociality that make certain practices more or less possible and reflect on how the socio-material form of these infrastructures connects with the infrastructural work it does. We draw on our own research study into co-living, connecting our findings with research on the historical housing types. Our findings show that shrinking private spaces, maximizing productive spaces, and integrating services are strategies that animate the infrastructural work of these housing types. The definition and materialization of smart homes has changed over time in accordance with technological advancements and changing housing trajectories. Despite this, to date little research has problematized what different household types and tenure mean for the smart home. As housing markets become more diverse and technology becomes increasingly embedded in the everyday, critical attention needs to be paid to ways in which technologies are being used to mediate households beyond the owner-occupied, nuclear family home. Thinking critically about this is necessary in order to better understand the benefits and pernicious effects of technology on people who have different needs for technology within the home due to different tenures and different materializations of housing and home. This article situates the rented and shared house as the 'actually existing' smart home. It shows that those sharing housing use smart technologies performatively, subversively and as an infrastructure of care across all stages of the share housing cycle – from finding a place to live, to managing the household and maintaining relationships. Abstract Finding a new house is an essential but challenging undertaking for migrant workers. Current understanding of these migrant housing trajectories is rudimentary, contrasting migrants with non-migrants, or looks at the housing situation at a certain point in time. This article presents a fine-grained and longitudinal perspective on housing trajectories including less-studied alternative tenures. Using sequence and clustering techniques on Dutch register data, it identifies patterns in tenure registrations of EU migrant workers in the Netherlands, over time. In the first years, alternative private rental arrangements are common, after which some migrants move on to more secure accommodation, while others leave the Netherlands or continue to stay in precarious and/or shared-housing arrangements. A distinction is made between relatively progressive improvement (leading to social rental or homeownership) and stagnating trajectories (long-term private rent, long-term informal registration and long-term shared housing). Regression analyses show how these housing trajectories are differentiated across socio-demographic variables and the structural conditions of the arrival city, as well as by employment sector. The findings contribute to the literature on migrant housing careers and underline the wide diversity of housing challenges. Abstract Low-income earners and others facing housing market barriers have long sought to save costs by sharing. Potentially a release valve in constrained markets, the share sector is poorly understood due to the difficulty of tracing informal negotiations between cohabiting households. However, the rise of online accommodation platforms opens new opportunities to view these hidden arrangements while also propelling new practices under the broader financialisation of housing and ‘platformisation’ of daily life. With reference to Sydney, Australia, one of the world’s most expensive housing markets, we use platform data to investigate the contemporary share housing sector, using listings placed by people both seeking and offering shared accommodation via Flatmates.com.au. Our study contributes to emerging literature at the intersection between informal housing markets and platformisation, revealing a complex rental sector where costs may be discounted but are not necessarily affordable for lower income earners unable to access more appropriate or secure alternatives. Abstract Shared housing in the private rental sector (PRS) is becoming a globally significant household arrangement. However, research indicates that shared housing is associated with problems including financial and housing insecurity. Given the growth of shared housing in the PRS, it is necessary for policy solutions to appropriately address the needs of shared housing renters. This paper aims to investigate the relationship between housing policy and non-commercial shared housing in the PRS – that is, autonomous households in self-contained dwellings – and how this has been conceptualised and examined in academic scholarship thus far. To achieve these aims, we conduct a scoping review on non-commercial shared housing in the PRS. Research illustrates that the reality of shared housing is not accommodated well in existing housing policy systems. We analyse reasons that housing policy may not adapt easily to non-commercial shared housing, and outline the need for further research on policy implications and recommendations about shared housing in the PRS. The global COVID-19 pandemic has led households to find creative ways to share resources to address isolation, stress, and anxiety. We build on these social experiments to suggest that sharing in housing and neighborhoods can lead to better mental health and wellbeing. The capabilities approach, popularized by philosophers Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum, provides a theoretical perspective for integrating sharing options into housing and neighborhood design, regulation, and investment. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed complex connections between housing and health vulnerabilities. By investigating the share housing market in Sydney, Australia during the COVID-19 period, this paper examines these connections, highlighting health risks associated with shared facilities, overcrowding, and rental insecurity. Using data from Flatmates.com.au, Australia's dominant share housing platform, the paper analyses advertisements offering or seeking share housing in April and August 2020. Abstract In context of diminishing housing affordability, shared renting has acquired new salience in recent years, especially for single young-adults. Public discourses often pose shared renting as a potential solution to the ‘housing crisis’, with new regulation and investment stimulating conversions to multiple-occupancy and growth in co-living developments. This paper addresses how Amsterdam, a deeply regulated market, has approached affordability concerns through transformations in the shared rental sector. Drawing on secondary data and stakeholder interviews we analyze developments in the institutional features of shared housing, focusing on the regulatory context under neo-liberal pressures. We identify shifts from ‘traditional’, relatively informalized sharing arrangements towards a more complex and institutionalized sector featuring growth and diversification in co-living provision. Beyond illustrating interaction between changing real-estate investment practices and Amsterdam’s socioeconomic and regulatory context, our analysis innovates a rough typology of sharing and co-living and seeks to contribute to understanding of emerging forms of housing and precarity characteristic to the experiences of young urbanites. This paper analyses the normalization of everyday sharing practices in two exemplary German neighbourhoods, which both provide numerous opportunities for sharing spaces, stuff, food and mobility carriers, but differ regarding their "philosophy". The first case belongs to the increasingly popular "collaborative housing" model, the second one is a developer-driven, service-based project. Inspired by core ideas from Social Practice Theory, the guiding questions of this research are then 1) to which extent have sharing practices become a normal part of residents' lives in these neighbourhoods and 2) what may explain observed differences? Evidence shows that residents in the collaborative housing case share more frequently, more regularly and over longer timespans than their counterparts in the developer-driven neighbourhood. In the meantime, both their original demands and the repressive state response they faced continue to shape feminist debates around gendered state violence and land occupations amid the current housing and economic crisis. Economic pressures, demographic changes and digital technologies are reshaping housing pathways as rented, shared and digitalized. In Australia, a growing proportion of adults are renting in the private market, often in shared accommodation. We know little about shared housing because the shared rental sector remains largely "hidden". Online shared housing platforms offer insights into how people seek homes in a market where personal attributes are marketed alongside properties and rent. We use over 9000 Flatmates.com.au listings to identify the demographic features of shared households and potential tenants, with a smaller subset used to illuminate the characteristics that are sought after and marketed by people searching for a shared home. Our analysis reveals that the "ideal flatmate" is one who contributes to social relations in the home while rarely being at home. Staying unmarried and not starting a nuclear family is increasingly common around the globe. At the same time, living arrangements are diversifying. Both living alone and sharing housing are growing trends, especially in urban areas. This is also true in Japan, where experts anticipate the emergence of a so-called 'Hyper-Solo-Society', despite the norm to get married remaining strong. In this regard, Japan can serve as an excellent case study for investigating the relationship worlds of unmarried adults through and in relation to their living arrangements. My data draw on a qualitative study of unmarried individuals—primarily women—between the ages of 24 and 45 in different living arrangements in Tokyo and Kyoto and point to a diversification of relationship worlds, offering insights into how this development is interwoven with the diversification of living arrangements and revealing the shifting, partly blurring boundaries of dwelling, relating, and belonging. Furthermore, the data indicate that 'new' spaces of relating and belonging—spaces of one's own, spaces of (unfocused) embeddedness, and spaces of togetherness with friends, partners, or one's family of choice—are emerging and/or actively being created. These spaces, which partly break with conventional gendered configurations, are fluid and comprise ambivalences and ambiguities, but they can play a salient role for shifting notions of what 'home' and 'belonging' mean. By identifying changing perceptions of home and belonging, this paper contributes a new perspective to current global debates on 'singles' and their practices of relating and belonging at the intersection of gender, mobility, and space. Airbnb prominently argues to promote more inclusive forms of tourism through enabling ordinary households to occasionally share their home with tourists. This conventional understanding of 'home-sharing' has been challenged, however, with critics arguing that property owners and landlords use the platform for the commercial provision of permanent holiday homes. This article uses Airbnb provision practices and the dichotomy of 'home-sharing' and commercial provision as an empirical entry point into the debate to what extent Airbnb promotes more inclusive tourism development. While existing studies on Airbnb provision practices in the European context have predominantly focused on the major tourism centres with the biggest tourism numbers, we consider a second-rank European tourist city with a rapidly growing Airbnb supply, Vienna, Austria. Methodologically, we critically review and extend common approaches to identify commercial practices. Based on a new dataset of Airbnb listings, quantitative statistics and GIS, we find that, in Vienna, the notion of 'home-sharing' is insufficient to fully explain the characteristics of the Airbnb supply, with commercial practices playing a considerable part, yet in geographically uneven ways. Our extended methodological framework provides further, more differentiated insights into provision practices than previous studies. Most housing forms and living arrangements in contemporary cities are designed for settled populations, and housing markets poorly address the needs of mobile population groups. This paper explores the housing forms and living arrangements which emerge from the conditions of temporality and mobility and are practised by the middle-income group of high-skilled transnational professionals. The study is based on 65 semi-structured interviews with migrants from Western countries in Moscow and London. Three inter-related factors of highly mobile living are found to shape the particular housing demands of this migrant group. Firstly, the need for economic flexibility determines the preference for sharing options rather than for individual renting. Secondly, the travelling pattern of their jobs imposes time-related housing limitations, and their life-course stage may require flexibility. Thirdly, this migrant group expresses requirements for physical and functional comfort of housing, as well as access to amenities and a sense of community, despite their detached lifestyles. However, although most of these housing needs are known in the literature, they have not yet been examined in relation to the mobile living of transnational professionals, and this paper illuminates this research gap. Tenure in collaborative housing remains under contextualized. Unpacking tenure contributes to internal differentiation of collaborative housing, its comparison to other modes of housing provision and the evaluation of potential benefits. This paper develops an ideal-typical typology of tenure through property regimes. These constitute social arrangements regarding the allocation of rights, rules and roles with respect to a resource. In terms of organizational characteristics, collaborative housing is based on limited common property, self-governance and sets of internal rules. While sharing these characteristics with other residential communities, collaborative housing can be differentiated by virtue of collectively held management and commissioning rights. By the preschool age, children exhibit a diversity of prosocial behaviors that include both sharing resources and helping others. Though recent work has theorized that these prosocial behaviors are differentiated by distinct ages of emergence, developmental trajectories and underlying mechanisms, the experimental evidence in support of the last claim remains scant. The current study focuses on one such cognitive mechanism – numerical cognition – seeking to replicate and extend prior work demonstrating the strong link between children's numerical cognition and precise sharing behavior, and further examining its relationship to instrumental helping. In line with theoretical perspectives favoring the differentiation of varieties of prosocial behaviors, we hypothesize that numerical cognition underlies precise sharing, but not precise helping behavior. Eighty-five 3 to 6-year-old children completed two procedurally similar tasks designed to elicit sharing and instrumental helping behavior, in addition to a Give-N task measuring their symbolic counting skills. Despite the procedural similarity, and the implicit norm of providing half (5 out of 10) stickers in both tasks, children's counting proficiency predicted precise sharing, but not precise helping. These results indicate a unique relationship between children's developing numerical cognition and behavioral fairness, providing empirical support for claims that varieties of prosocial behavior are supported by distinct underlying mechanisms. In Australian suburbs, due to increasing housing unaffordability, informal shared housing makes up a growing private rental sub-market. At present, there is limited research exploring what dynamics may motivate owner-occupiers to initiate informal shared housing, how informality operates in this rental sub-market and how owner-occupiers with distinct ethnic and cultural backgrounds negotiate informality. Drawing on a qualitative investigation among owner-occupiers of Bangladeshi origin in different suburbs of Greater Sydney, the paper discusses a distinct form of informal shared housing that goes beyond the perceived economic rationality of rent-and-return. What our research reveals is that owner-occupiers also take into consideration the multiple risks involved in the management of these shared housing premises and how the management of these risks results in the limitation of the rental sub-market to specific ethnic communities and social groups. Our findings highlight the importance of considering social and cultural factors in rethinking the notion of home in these non-normative housing sites. We conclude with some suggestions about policy interventions that may be able to recognise the underlying logics of informal housing tenures that are informed by cultural perceptions of risk on the part of owner-occupiers. Barcelona, one of the main destinations for Airbnb users, has turned into one of the main stages for the now global debate around short-term rentals and their impacts on resident communities. Criticism has mostly focused on the conversion of housing into conventional tourist apartments while less attention has been paid to the problematization of short-term rentals in primary residences. Important questions thus arise as to whether these allegedly genuine forms of home-sharing should be 'formalised' at all through a regulation, and which type of controls should be applied. Our research helps to excavate this issue, shedding further light on the different logics and practices behind the development of home-sharing, and discusses the limitations of a regulation which is being introduced. To this end, it offers an in-depth analysis of the home-sharing supply in Barcelona, tackling its social and spatial logics, which is framed in the broader debate on processes of social change affecting inner cities. It then focuses on el Raval, one of Barcelona's core neighbourhoods where home-sharing practices have become more diffused, revealing how these practices are strongly correlated with high residential mobility and the presence of a single-dweller childless European resident population. Finally, we argue that home-sharing becomes an equally problematic agency of conversion of housing into a mooring for mobile communities, further contributing to potential gentrification and the displacement of residents. As cities accommodate, resist, and negotiate with the spread of so-called 'sharing economy' companies, the question of how these businesses actively construct new markets (or sub-markets) through political mobilization and rhetorical strategy has become increasingly salient. This paper explores the ways in which the home-sharing platform Airbnb has sought to carve out a regulatory and discursive space for operation through the political mobilization of its 'hosts' in New York City. Based on nearly two years of ethnographic research, the paper argues that host clubs are not merely top-down transmission belts for the company's political lobbying strategy; beyond political organizing, they are also sites in which the very practices of hosting through Airbnb are affirmed, rehearsed, learned, and debated. On the one hand, Airbnb host clubs are both physical embodiments of, and mechanisms for, the narrative framing of 'home-sharing' as a particular kind of economic activity that is more democratic, inclusive, and sustainable than the traditional hospitality industry. On the other hand, Airbnb host clubs reveal and reflect the tensions – between hosts and Airbnb, and among hosts themselves – that persist over the practice of home-sharing. As the calls for tighter regulation and increased penalties for illegal short-term rentals continue to grow, however, the question of whether host clubs constitute a viable mechanism for political mobilization and regulatory reform remains an open one. References to likeminded-ness and togetherness have seen forms of shared housing (e.g. co-living) conflated with collective and collaborative forms of housing (e.g. co-housing). Collaborative housing and housing providers: Towards an analytical framework of multi-stakeholder collaboration in housing co-production. Sharing in the context of housing is no different, with commoning practices in co-operatives and co-housing subverting capitalist consumptive cultures, while commoditized forms of co-living, or (serviced) flat-sharing support it. Shared housing has, therefore, transitioned from being a marginal and transitional tenure in the housing careers of young adults, toward becoming a staple tenure for a broader segment of people through longer periods of their housing careers. In Britain, the number of young single people living in shared accommodation is on the rise. While sharing may be positive when voluntarily chosen, those who are forced to share accommodation may have far more negative experiences. This paper examines how recent changes to the Shared Accommodation Rate of housing welfare have resulted in people having to share accommodation until the age of thirty-five. Our focus is on the experiences of young single women who are in receipt of housing benefit and are living on low or no income. The paper is based upon forty biographical interviews with people who have lived, or are living in, shared accommodation with strangers. It emphasises how, although having a roof over their heads, women living in shared accommodation often do not feel at home. Shared living resulted in domestic space being experienced not as a site of refuge, but as a place of insecurity and fear. The paper highlights how cuts to housing welfare have removed a vital infrastructure of care, leaving some young women in a position of heightened vulnerability. For almost a century, Swedes living in shared housing have resided in 'kollektivhus', a form of co-housing that support sharing reproductive work. However, during the past decade, new forms of exclusive shared housing have emerged on the Swedish housing market. In contrast to international trends of vulnerable singles being forced to share housing, this Swedish example shows that also financially privileged singles reside in shared housing. Based on a survey of housing companies and a case study the article argues that mobility has been a driver for this new form of shared housing. In the article, 'dwelling on-the-move together' is identified as a new practice of residing in exclusive shared housing. This practice is characterised by sharing private, exclusive facilities, sharing paid services and sharing spaces for both home and work, in an environment that certifies that residents can come and go as they please while hired staff takes care of their property. While exclusive shared housing is an asset for residents, it also privatise facilities and reintroduces domestic workers to middle-class housing. In all, the marketization of shared housing risks introducing a stratification of shared housing which may reinforce the geographic and social polarisation of Swedish cities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the challenges of everyday practices of co-operation in UK shared housing co-operatives, situated within literatures that stress the relational basis of these practices and the centrality of 'critical associations' to the conduct of everyday life. Shared housing co-operatives, based on mutual ownership and co-residence between unrelated adults, represent a radical departure from both the traditional landlord/tenant model of shared housing and newer models of shared provision such as co-living developments. They allow sharers to access affordable housing through effectively become their own landlord. Yet the practices of co-operation that generate these benefits are challenging, necessitating high levels of commitment to a common ethos and involving an unusual mix of both formal and informal ways of relating to co-residents. These features are explored in this paper. The paper concludes that, despite wider societal pressures towards the commodification of housing, the structures and norms of shared housing co-operatives allow them to transcend the strengths and weaknesses of their membership at any given time, and hence facilitate an unusual alternative to more widespread models of sharing in the private-rented sector. The economy is entrenched in the domestic and the domestic enables the economy. We consider this dialectical relationship between the economy and 'home' through a case study of coliving, a new type of privately delivered shared housing emerging in response to increasingly precarious economic conditions. We examine how the proliferation of coliving signifies shifting meanings and cultures of home for digital nomads, the latest iteration of the creative class. We draw upon a content analysis of twenty websites of coliving organisations located in New York and San Francisco, United States of America. Our analysis uncovers emergent meanings and cultures of home that are strongly associated with economic conditions. We consider how the spatial manifestations of a precarious economy are supported by new homemaking practices and imaginaries of home – what may be termed home cultures of precarity. Coliving challenges conventional meanings of home: a reprieve from work, private, secure and inhabited long term. Instead, home is a capital accumulation technology for this cohort – a site for the active production of capital. The ideal home for the new creative class is a place of work that is mobile and social. The economy, meanings of home and homemaking practices are co-productive and co-emergent. Shared rental housing has long been one of the few affordable options available to low-income urban singles. Gaining access to a share rental dwelling has historically relied on 'low tech' communications such as noticeboards and classifieds, in relatively localised spatial areas. With the global proliferation of digitally mediated peer-to-peer platforms, the geographical reach of shared renting, including the opportunity for living with strangers, has expanded. Amidst declining affordability and growing precarity, the enhanced spatial flows and connectivity of peer-to-peer platforms provide a direct yet informal route into rental housing. In these informal spaces, singles rely on networks of 'distributed' rather than 'institutional' trust associated with formal rental arrangements. Drawing on interviews with urban singles in Australia, this paper explores the everyday informal practices of forming networks for shared access, negotiating the living agreement, creating a home and becoming an expert in the digitally mediated spaces of the shared rental household. The everyday informal practices of 'distributed trust' sheds new light on the spatially contingent 'trust cultures' emerging in shared renting. Despite narratives of a movement towards the more collaborative consumption of a sharing economy, enduring informal practices of opportunists and entrepreneurs that erode trust and a sense of home persist. In the context of mounting housing market pressures and an international swell in the formation of non-family households, especially among younger-adults, this paper examines share house (shea-hausu), an increasingly popular form of shared private rental housing in Tokyo. We frame our study in relation to shifting socioeconomic and demographic conditions affecting single, young Japanese adults, their aspirations and life-courses, as well as forms and practices in Japanese housing. We elaborate on the way shea-hausu are provided, and discuss three sets of techniques that together configure shea-hausu as a product distinct from other forms of renting, but also re-script sharing as a particular kind of 'desirable living' among single young adults. Created to help its founders pay their rent during a housing crisis, Airbnb promotes its services as a supplemental income strategy to 'make ends meet' by renting their homes to strangers. This article compares Airbnb 'home sharing' to its historical precursor of taking lodgers and boarders in early industrial North American cities, an important form of supplemental income for women and one of the few remaining alternatives to wage income. Historicizing Airbnb shows that this source of supplemental income cannot be separated from gendered and racist ideologies that value certain practices while stigmatizing others. Such ideologies shaped labour markets as well as the housing policies that responded to the crisis of social reproduction in the industrial era, with repercussions still felt in the context of platform urbanism. Thinking the city through this work highlights the interrelation between household economies, housing strategies and the division of labour in the period, with implications for how we analyze short-term rental platforms like Airbnb. In this introduction to the first of two special issues on 'Informal housing practices' we set out the foundations for a research agenda on 'informality' within housing scholarship, and propose initial implications for policy and practice. In doing so we draw from the rich conceptual work by urban geographers and political economists who situate informality within wider processes of neoliberalism, globalisation and deregulation, as well as the small but emerging body of research by housing scholars who see informal housing as both a symptom of, and potential solution to, unmet housing need. Our jumping off point for the special issues was an interest in the dimensions of informal housing manifesting in expensive cities and regions of the global north, where the veneer of 'formal' urban development and housing markets render informal housing practices largely invisible. Grounded within this context, papers in this issue illuminate different dimensions of informal housing practice; from the physical transformation of dwellings through to the ways in which individuals navigate shared domestic space; or how policy makers seek to expand low cost rental markets by legitimising secondary dwellings and micro-apartments. Drawing on the wider literature on informality and the role of the state in producing/resolving unmet housing need; we argue that informal housing practices warrant further research and policy attention, particularly with respect to cities and regions of the global north. Shared housing emerges as an important housing choice for low-to-middle income tenants experiencing difficulties accessing housing in competitive and unaffordable formal rental markets. Shared room housing – where two or more non-related tenants share sleeping spaces, such as bedrooms or partitioned living rooms – is a growing subcategory of shared housing in cities of the Global North. Shared room tenancies are arranged under multi-layered sub-letting rental arrangements that often lack written tenancy agreements and formal protection. Despite evidence that more people are living in shared room housing, there is limited research that explores the experiences of those living in these informal arrangements and the relationship with policy/regulatory frameworks that seek to govern shared housing practices. This paper addresses this gap by investigating tenants' motivations for living, and the challenges they face, in informal shared room housing in Sydney. The study finds that shared room housing offers flexibility and rental affordability for tenants marginalised from the formal rental market; however, it also raises a series of issues, such as tenure insecurity, exploitation, health and safety risks, and lack of access to formal dispute resolution services. Shared room housing is a growing private rental submarket, which offers flexible and affordable rental sub-lettings for sharing a bedroom or living room with non-related tenants. However, research exploring the living experiences and home-making practices of shared room tenants is sparse. Drawing on an empirical base of shared room housing experiences in Sydney (online survey n = 103, in-depth interviews n = 35), this paper provides insights on how these residents strive to achieve the material, social and emotional elements of home while dealing with insecure occupancies and maintaining multiplex relations with non-related roommates and housemates. Within the wider affordability crisis affecting major cities throughout the world, share housing has become increasingly important, potentially expanding capacity in the private rental sector. But share housing is difficult to monitor and research, embedded in various forms of tenancy and household arrangements within the wider housing system. Online rental platforms which increasingly enable and facilitate the share housing sector may also offer a critical window into its operation. This paper examines this possibility with reference to Sydney, Australia, drawing on listings scraped from share housing platform "Flatmates.com.au" to determine the scale and distribution of shared housing vacancies relative to the city's wider housing market. Our findings demonstrate rising dependence on share housing as a source of lower-cost rental supply near employment and education but raise questions about share accommodation as a long-term housing solution. This study focuses on the critical role instructional communication plays in effective risk and crisis communication. More specifically, we examined efforts made by the United States' swine industry to teach biosecurity practices in response to the African Swine Fever virus, a highly contagious novel disease. To do so, researchers interviewed 14 research, veterinary, and extension specialists to assess the swine industry's capacity to function as a community of practice (CoP). Strategies were coded under the three major functions of CoPs: mutual engagement, shared repertoire, and joint negotiation. Respondents indicated that the industry was successful primarily because they engaged in effective instructional communication as a learning CoP to create a clear shared repertoire and negotiate consistent messages to teach better biosecurity practices among diverse people and facilities. Although the goal of biosecurity remains the same—maintaining a line of separation between infected areas and uninfected areas—the means for achieving it may differ among locations and the instructional strategies for achieving it must be tailored for diverse populations to achieve the desired affective, cognitive, and behavioral learning outcomes. Problem, research strategy, and findings: Globally, house sharing among unrelated individuals is on the rise. In this study I use a rare data opportunity to uncover the role of gender in an extreme form of shared housing, the case of bed space rentals in Shanghai (China). Combining web-scraped online data with fieldwork, I find that women face gendered hindrances as they trade personal space for spatial access to opportunities. In particular, barriers to entry restrict women's choices in this housing submarket. In addition, they pay a premium of almost 10% to rent in better, less crowded conditions. This rent premium is driven by distinctively gendered housing needs, including concerns for personal safety. My findings are somewhat constrained by the geographical scope. Although contemporary urban China is facing many of the pressures that have been documented in growing cities globally, Chinese cities are uniquely shaped by the country's socioeconomic and cultural context, including culturally specific gender norms, economic transition, and the hukou household registration system. Still, the findings provide important impetus for gender-conscious planning approaches to shared housing beyond the Chinese context. Takeaway for practice: The absence of planning solutions for young adults who increasingly navigate prolonged housing transitions has led to a diversity of informal affordable housing strategies, including sharing of accommodation. This paper explores the housing pathways of young adults following the breakdown of a first intimate relationship based on co-residence. In particular it explores the frequent recourse to shared housing and returns to the parental home, and how these options may be seen as steps backward, yet also offer opportunities for support. Findings are discussed in the context of the de-standardisation of transitions to adulthood characterised by uncertainties related to early years of employment and the shortage of affordable housing. Although often not as consequential as mid-life relationship breakdowns for future housing prospects, intimate relationship breakdowns linked to initial co-residence are nonetheless critical life events for young adults, leading to a re-evaluation of their existing relationships and of their plans in relation to housing and family formation. Our findings also indicate that the backwards and forwards movements associated with intermediary housing arrangements and in-between phases are deserving of greater attention. There is no springtime day to compare to Seattle when the cherry blossoms are in bloom, the sun is out, and Mount Rainier looks like a dream, down past Suzzallo Library on the University of Washington campus. We signed off the meeting with the dean agreeing to take a closer look at the evaluation process, and it dawned on me that I had learned about checklist methods of classroom evaluation in Ann Staton's graduate class in instructional communication. While psychologists increasingly recognize the role of cultural processes in children's psychological development, few analyze these cultural processes directly. This paper demonstrates how such cultural processes can be revealed by using interpretive approaches to culture and child development. Interpretive approaches maintain definitions of culture that are common in the literature more generally, highlighting that culture refers to both "substance" (i.e. beliefs, values, and practices that are shared, historical, and organized) and "communities" (i.e. groups of people). However, interpretive approaches use and treat this definition differently than do most developmental studies by emphasizing contextual understanding and description over linear and internal causation. Interpretive approaches therefore have implications for both the kind of knowledge researchers produce about culture and development, and for the kinds of ways in which researchers engage with cultural communities during the research process. In the paper, I outline the "substance" side and the "community" side of culture in turn, drawing on examples from my own work on parent-child conversations and moral development within U.S. evangelical and mainline Christian religious cultures in order to illustrate what an interpretive approach could look like. Through these examples, I highlight the active role of individuals in their development and in defining their cultural communities through practices of self-monitoring. The implications of interpretive approaches for applied developmental science include expanded scientific understanding of human psychological functioning and more generous and engaged intercultural relations. While homage must be made to Udit Sarkhel, who, towards the end of his brief life, movingly made films about cooking, memory loss, dementia and the personality of food through spicing, great credit for the advancement of Desi-Chinese food must be given to Stephen Lee, who has a flagship restaurant Hakkaland. Local street food vendors influenced by this cuisine soon created their own take on the Hakka Chinese food and the food that you find in almost all Chinese restaurants in India today was born - Indo Chinese Cuisine. A key aspect of permanent supportive housing (PSH) is the community it forms, providing social supports and a sense of home for residents. Only recently, however, have evaluations of PSH examined community as an integral characteristic. For intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors, a new PSH target population, community and social connections are uniquely important. Using a case study of a PSH program for IPV survivors, we explored residents' experiences of a community. Based on feminist-grounded theory, we conducted in-depth interviews with 13 survivors over a two-year period. Findings indicate that some residents experience community in terms of shared physical space and shared identity and that positive interactions exist. However, the system of supports was fragile and inconsistent. We discuss strategies to strengthen community within PSH, but also argue for an expanded definition of community that reflects the diverse backgrounds and circumstances of residents. Since the 2000s many European countries have seen the re-emergence of a range of collective self-organized and participatory forms of housing provision. Collaborative housing (CH) has been adopted by many researchers and practitioners over the last decades as an umbrella term to encompass the wide variety that these forms of housing can take. Clearer definitions of CH practices would help us identify the potential and limits of these housing types to address a variety of (new) housing needs, notably vis-a-vis other types of housing provision. Their conceptualization of CH as the domain of "bricoleurs" or "makers" emphasies the agency of residents who collectively display creativity and resourcefulness to customize their own homes and "obtain housing that is not easily available in the standard housing production" (p.7).
