Objectives: Herein, we explored the associations of pre-pandemic COVID-19 physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB) and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) with mental health and quality of life in older adults with hypertension. Method: Objectively measured PA and SB, perceived stress, depression symptoms, and quality of life were assessed before and during the pandemic in seventeen older adults with hypertension. CRF was assessed before the pandemic by cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Longitudinal and cross-sectional associations were analyzed using the mixed linear model. Results: Pre-pandemic light PA (positive association) and SB (negative association) were associated with quality of life during the pandemic. Higher pre-pandemic CRF was associated with less negative changes in perceived stress, depression symptoms, and quality of life during the pandemic. Conclusion: Our preliminary findings suggest that a healthier pre-pandemic movement behavior (more PA, less SB) and better CRF can mitigate the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and quality of life in older adults with hypertension. Monte Gordo Natural Park (MGNP) is part of the Cape Verde (CV) Protected Areas National Network. In order to create an effective Environmental Education (EE) curriculum, it is crucial to first identify the level of environmental knowledge of both teachers and students. In 2007 we implemented a set of four surveys to students and educators and received 956 responses to create the first local database. Primary students, on average, scored at the reasonable level of knowledge; high school students showed an inadequate level of knowledge; elementary teachers showed a good level of knowledge; and high school science teachers showed a very good level of knowledge. Based on the preliminary results, MGNP wishes to extend this evaluation model to the regional and national levels to create a more comprehensive database for Cape Verde. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fungi of genus Neotyphodium are systemic, constitutive, symbionts of grasses of subfamily Pooideae. In the southern hemisphere most of these asexual endophytes are the result of the hybridization between two sexual species, Epichloë festucae and E. typhina, from the northern hemisphere. However the ancestral sexual species have not been detected in this region. Several grasses from Argentina are infected by Neotyphodium species. These endophytes are in general very similar macro- and micromorphologically and phylogenetically conform to species N. tembladerae. However the Neotyphodium spp. endophytes of some hosts, Bromus auleticus and Poa spicifomis var. spiciformis, have not been included in this species. In this work we studied the incidence and characterized the diversity of Neotyphodium species in populations of the native grass Bromus auleticus from Argentina. The incidence of endophytes was 100% in all populations investigated. Two groups of endophytes were differentiated by their morphologies, growth rates, conidial ontogenies and by relative resistance to the fungicide benomyl. Phylogenetic trees inferred from tefA and tubB intron sequences indicated that both N. tembladerae and the novel morphotype were hybrids of E. festucae and E. typhina, but the ancestral E. typhina genotype distinguished them. Isolates from plants that inhabit coastal dunes, xerophytic forests, savannahs and hills were similar morphologically and phylogenetically to N. tembladerae, whereas the endophytes from the humid pampa plains conformed to the novel group. We propose the endophyte of Bromus auleticus from humid pampas as a new species, Neotyphodium pampeanum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractBackgroundMethodsResultsConclusionsThis meta-review aimed to synthesize the evidence of the effects of exercise on anxiety and depression symptoms amongst adults with cancer, and cancer-survivors, comparing effects sizes between meta-analysis.Major databases were searched up to February 9, 2024 for meta-analyses evaluating the effects of exercise, using anxiety and/or depression scales. Effect size (ES) values were calculated as standardized differences in the means and expressed as the Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) with the 95% confidence interval (95%CI). A total of eight unique meta-analyses were included.Among meta-analyses examining both anxiety and depression symptoms overall, a small beneficial effect of exercise was shown [SMD = 0.41 (0.25–0.57); p < 0.0001]. Subgroup analyses revealed that exercise has a small effect on decreasing anxiety [SMD = 0.42 (0.04–0.79); p = 0.027], and depressive symptoms [SMD = 0.38 (0.21–0.56); p < 0.0001]. In addition, aerobic exercise has a moderate effect on reducing depressive symptoms [SMD = 0.54 (0.16–0.93); p = 0.005], whereas resistance exercise has no effect. Subgroup analyses by type of cancer observed a moderate effect on decreasing depressive symptoms in patients with breast cancer [SMD = 0.51 (0.27–0.74); p < 0.0001].Exercise (specifically aerobic) should be considered by healthcare professionals as a strategy to treat/manage symptoms of anxiety and depression amongst adults with cancer and cancer-survivors.
