Shift work is a prevalent workplace exposure, which increases the possibility of unhealthy behaviours and circadian rhythm disruptions and elevates the risk of metabolic diseases and adverse reproductive outcomes. But its potential of increasing the risk of postpartum weight retention remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal shift work prior to conception and postpartum weight retention, and to identify modifiable factors during pregnancy for prevention. We analysed data from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study, a prospective cohort of Taiwanese women who gave birth in 2005. We examined the pre-conceptional shift work status of 13,575 mothers and their body weight before pregnancy, before delivery, six and eighteen months after delivery. We used multivariable linear models to examine associations and effect modifications. Maternal shift work before pregnancy was significantly associated with increased postpartum weight retention at six and eighteen months (β-estimate for six months: 0.19-kilogram, 95% CI: 0.03–0.34; eighteen months: 0.23-kilogram, 95% CI: 0.04–0.40). The association between shift work and weight retention at six months postpartum was stronger among mothers who were overweight or obese before pregnancy than mothers with normal weight. Sucrose content influences the flavour and quality of fruits. Sucrose synthase (SUS; EC 2.4.1.13) mediates the reversible conversion of uridine diphosphate and sucrose to uridine diphosphate-glucose and fructose. Although genome-wide analyses of SUS gene families exist for various species, such studies are lacking for pineapple. The specific SUS gene(s) involved in sucrose metabolism during pineapple development remain unknown. This study identified six SUS genes (AcSUS1–6) and analysed their chromosomal locations, synteny, structure, motif composition, sequence alignments, and phylogenetic relationships. Gene promoter analysis revealed a predominance of light-response elements in the AcSUS gene family. AcSUS1 was predominantly expressed in the peduncle, pericarp, and core, whereas AcSUS4 was highly expressed in the flesh. The levels of sucrose, glucose, and fructose increase during pineapple fruit development. Further gene expression analysis indicated that AcSUS2, AcSUS3, and AcSUS5 were down-regulated during this period. These results suggest that AcSUS2, AcSUS3, and AcSUS5 may modulate sucrose breakdown in pineapple. This study contributes to our understanding of SUS gene function in regulating sucrose metabolism and offers valuable theoretical guidance for the genetic improvement of pineapples. Grounded in career construction theory, we proposed that proactive personality (a disposition that drives people to focus on the future) influences career adaptability (the attitudes and behaviours that people use to adapt to work), which in turn influences career exploration (purposive cognition and behaviour to seek information for self-career advancement). However, psychological safety as a boundary condition may affect career adaptability's relation to career exploration. Hence, this study examined whether students' psychological safety moderates career adaptability's mediating effect on the relationship between proactive personality and career exploration. A total of 288 students who completed internships at Taiwanese sports centres or fitness clubs participated in this research. The results indicate that interns' psychological safety, functioning as a moderator, intensifies proactive personality's indirect effect on career exploration through career adaptability. Five new sesquiterpenoids, including a campherenane-type (1), a bergamotane-type (2), a drimane-type (3), and two bisabolane-type (5-6) sesquiterpenoids have been isolated from Biscogniauxia sp. 71-10-1-1. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analyses, quantum chemical ECD calculations,13C chemical shifts calculations, and X-ray crystallography. This is the first report of campherenane-type and drimane-type sesquiterpenoids from Biscogniauxia. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory assays of all compounds are evaluated, and the results showed that compounds 3 and 7 exhibited the effects against the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α. Antibiotics in ecosystems stimulate the emergence and development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes, consequently posing tremendous health risks to wildlife species and humans. Laccase, a multicopper-containing oxidoreductase, is capable of nonspecifically catalyzing oxidization of multiple hazardous micropollutants, including antibiotics, with O2 as the terminal electron acceptor. Thus, laccase is recognized as a promising "green and sustainable biocatalyst" for the decontamination of antibiotics. Recently, great efforts have been made to design and exploit immobilized laccase to tackle antibiotics in the environment. In this review, the occurrence, fate, and ecological risks of antibiotics in environmental matrices are described. Moreover, the immobilized laccase-evoked removal of antibiotics, owing to immobilization technology reinforcing the stability and reusability of free laccase in bioremediation, is examined in details. In particular, advances in laccase-provoked transformation mechanisms (i.e. oxidative decomposition and radical polymerization) of antibiotics are highlighted, and a valuable guideline beneficial to large-scale practical applications is provided. Furthermore, evaluation of the intermediate products of antibiotics and their ecotoxicity in different laccase-enabled treatments is summarized. This study explores the roles and research foci of AILEd (Artificial Intelligence in Language Education). The AILEd studies published from 1990 to 2020 in the WOS (Web of Science) database were included in the present study. Based on the well-recognized Technology-based Learning Review model, several dimensions, such as research methods, research sample groups, adopted technology, language skills, the role of AI in language education, and learning outcomes, were taken into account. The review results show that the main application domains of AILEd research were writing, reading, and vocabulary acquisition. In terms of applied technology and algorithms, AI in language education mostly adopted ITS (Intelligent Tutoring System) and NLP (Natural Language Processing). Besides, several commonly used AI algorithms were Statistical Learning, Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Natural Language Parsing. It was also found that some research focused on learning anxiety, willingness to communicate, knowledge acquisition, and classroom interaction. However, higher order thinking, complex problem solving, critical thinking ability, and collaborative learning tendencies were rarely considered in AILEd studies. Self-directed learning (SDL) ability, its usefulness in higher education and life-long learning have been highlighted in previous literature. However, there has been much less understanding of the effects of SDL ability in the school settings, specifically the effects on learners' SDL behaviors and processes. To address this limitation, this study investigated the relations between SDL ability, SDL behaviors, and reading outcomes and further explored the process of planning behaviors in SDL. This study examined the context of SDL for extensive reading using a goal-oriented active learning system, GOAL. The results showed that the high SDL ability students demonstrated significantly more reading outcomes in terms of books completed and the number of days read than those with low SDL ability. The high SDL ability students engaged significantly more in planning behaviors, that were found to be significantly correlated with reading outcomes, than the low SDL ability students. Cluster analysis and transition analysis also differentiate groups of learners with different planning behaviors. These findings suggested that the learning behaviors and outcomes facilitated by the environment were affected to varying degrees by the levels of students' SDL ability, and personalized feedback can be created using the SDL behavioral variables and patterns in the environment. This study aims to identify the bibliometric outcomes of articles and research trends in specific areas. This study revealed research on the use of e-books for EFL education published in selected journals of the Web of Science from 2011 to 2020, and discusses the trends of the top-cited countries, journals, the most used keywords, and the popular subjects, learning strategies, target skills, and the research outcomes. A total of 53 selected articles were manually and systematically analyzed. The results revealed that the most productive country was Taiwan, and the most cited journal was Computers & Education. The most used keywords were "engagement." The bibliometric analysis can be reflected in the content analysis as preschoolers and elementary school students were the most common participants, guided learning were the most frequently used strategy, and the main target skill was reading. This review study provides an overview of the research agenda for the last 10 years, and highlights the trends in the field by analyzing relevant past research. When the use of e-books in EFL education studies was examined, reading comprehension, teaching/learning strategies, and learning engagement were found to be crucial in the studies. Therefore, there is a need to develop more useful features of e-books to support EFL teaching practices. This study examines the perceptions of festival host residents of the Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage using the proposed model to evaluate the antecedent and outcome variables of place image. Using quantitative methods, this study proposes a model to determine host residents' perceptions based on fit, place image, quality of life, and behavioral intention. The findings showed that place image is vital in establishing a supportive perception toward the festival host city. Quality of life not only mediates the perceptions of residents' image and their residency but also independently contributes to the development of residents' behavioral intentions. The perceptions of place image or the quality of life of residents, especially place image, are significant predictors of residents' behavioral intentions. This study extends the concepts of fit and place image by taking a psychological perspective to provide strategies for festival management. To evaluate residents' quality of life and gain their intention to support for the festival, the present study suggests that event organizers and the local government take action on the characteristics of the festival and the host city represents. Providing entertainment activities combine with Mazu culture at nighttime is one of the suggestions. The exploratory model we proposed herein to explain host residents' viewpoints showed sufficient predictive power. The results underline the importance of fit, which can predict and explain place image. To compare the group- and individual-level responsiveness of the Barthel Index (BI) and modified BI (MBI) in patients with early subacute stroke. The BI and MBI scores of 63, 63, and 55 patients were retrieved at 3 time points with a 3-weeks interval. The group-level responsiveness was examined using paired t-test and standardized response mean (SRM). The individual-level responsiveness was examined by the percentage of patients who achieved significant improvement exceeding the corresponding minimal detectable change. At the group level, the MBI showed significantly larger SRMs than did the BI in the 1st–2nd assessment (1.10 vs. 0.81 [95% CI of mean difference = 0.05–0.38]) and the 2nd–3rd assessment (0.94 vs. 0.72 [95% CI of mean difference = 0.04–0.41]). At the individual level, the MBI detected significantly more patients with significant improvement than the BI for the 1st–2nd assessments only (34.9 vs. 25.4% [95% CI of mean differences = 3.2–17.5]). The MBI has better responsiveness than the BI at both the group and individual levels in the patients with early subacute stroke. The MBI is recommended for clinical and research use as an outcome measure for patients with stroke. The MBI is recommended for clinical and research applications because of its superior ability to detect subtle changes in ADL performance in patients with subacute stroke. Hands-on activities and makerspaces have rapidly gained popularity in recent years. One of the reasons for this is that they have the potential to stimulate interest and identity development in STEM or STEAM. Taiwan has organized many technology and science competitions for students to raise their interest and creativity in the past years. The iSTEAM contest in Taiwan plan to assist public schools in rural areas to develop students' capability in making activities. To motivate rural students to experience an integrated science, technology, engineering, art, and math (iSTEAM) contest, this study invited rural school students to prepare for and join a competition focusing on making miniature models. The related variables relevant to motivation orientation, such as participants' hands-on making self-efficacy, perceived value, cooperative attitude, and competition preparedness in the iSTEAM contest were explored. Expectedly, with an understanding of the correlates between those variables, the results of this study can be applied to successfully implement other STEAM contests. A total of 187 students who participated in the competition filled in the questionnaire for the survey participants. After invalid questionnaires were excluded, 167 valid questionnaires were obtained. This study adopts the purposive sampling method, based on the value-attitude-behavior model, the quantitative research method was adopted. The results showed that students who participated in the competition had high self-efficacy for making miniature models, appreciated the value that the competition brought them, and had a positive attitude about cooperating with team members as well as preparing for the competition. Curcumin is known to suppress the progression of colorectal cancer by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation. In this study, we explored the role of ferroptosis in the antiproliferative properties of curcumin. The effect of curcumin on ferroptosis In Vitro was evaluated in HCT-8 cells. Ferroptosis was first blocked by ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) and the antiproliferative effect of curcumin was evaluated by determining the levels of ferroptotic markers, including glutathione (GSH), SLC7A11, GPX4, iron, malondialdehyde (MDA), and reactive oxygen species (ROS). An agonist and an inhibitor of PI3K were also used to verify the signaling pathway involved in the antiproliferative effects. Curcumin repressed HCT-8 cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. Treating HCT-8 cells with curcumin significantly downregulated GSH, SLC7A11, and GPX4, while significantly increasing levels of iron, MDA, and ROS. In addition, curcumin promoted ferroptosis and reduced proliferation of HCT-8 cells by suppressing the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, and these effects were antagonized by Fer-1. The effects of curcumin were antagonized by a PI3K agonist and reinforced by a PI3K inhibitor. Curcumin triggers ferroptosis and suppresses proliferation of colorectal cancer cells by inhibiting the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. Malaria, a devastating febrile illness caused by protozoan parasites, sickened 247,000,000 people in 2021 and killed 619,000, mostly children and pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa. A highly effective vaccine is urgently needed, especially for Plasmodium falciparum (Pf), the deadliest human malaria parasite. Sporozoites (SPZ), the parasite stage transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes to humans, are the only vaccine immunogen achieving >90% efficacy against Pf infection. This review describes >30 clinical trials of PfSPZ vaccines in the U.S.A., Europe, Africa, and Asia, based on first-hand knowledge of the trials and PubMed searches of 'sporozoites,' 'malaria,' and 'vaccines.' First generation (radiation-attenuated) PfSPZ vaccines are safe, well tolerated, 80–100% efficacious against homologous controlled human malaria infection (CHMI) and provide 18–19 months protection without boosting in Africa. Second generation chemo-attenuated PfSPZ are more potent, 100% efficacious against stringent heterologous (variant strain) CHMI, but require a co-administered drug, raising safety concerns. Third generation, late liver stage-arresting, replication competent (LARC), genetically-attenuated PfSPZ are expected to be both safe and highly efficacious. Overall, PfSPZ vaccines meet safety, tolerability, and efficacy requirements for protecting pregnant women and travelers exposed to Pf in Africa, with licensure for these populations possible within 5 years. Aluminum accumulation is a well-described complication in dialysis patients. Improvements in hemodialysis technology have possibly eliminated the occurrence of aluminum overload. Limited evidence suggests that aluminum overload may decline in the era of aluminum removal from dialysis fluids, even with the use of aluminum binders. We examined the data from January 2014 to June 1, 2020, identified through our electronic records, to evaluate the desferrioxamine (DFO) test results for aluminum overload. The presentation and treatment of aluminum overload were recorded. Ninety-nine dialysis patients were enrolled for the DFO test. Forty-seven patients (47.5%) were identified as DFO test positive for aluminum overload, of which 14 (14/47) patients had symptoms, including one patient with an unexplained fracture, eight patients with unexplained anemia despite high-dose erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, and five patients with hypercalcemia (serum calcium >11 mg dL-1). None of the patients with aluminum overload developed encephalopathy. Only four of the 47 patients had microcytic anemia. Patients requiring longer treatments (>10 months versus <10 months) had similar basal serum aluminum (p = 0.219) but had an increase in serum aluminum after DFO (p = 0.041). Furthermore, the treatments decreased erythropoietin doses in the aluminum overload group, with serum total alkaline phosphatase levels <60 U L-1 (p = 0.028). We concluded that aluminum overload existed in the reverse osmosis dialysis era. In light of non-obvious symptoms, such as anemia and bone turnover change, serum aluminum in dialysis patients should be monitored in countries using aluminum-based phosphate binders, despite reverse osmosis dialysis. English speaking is a challenging learning objective for EFL (English as Foreign Language) learners owing to the lack of practicing environments. In this study, Interactive Spherical Video-based Virtual Reality (ISVVR) was adopted as the learning mode to provide realistic sociocultural contexts for English speaking. In addition, an experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of the SVVR approach on the English speaking performances and anxiety of the EFL students with different cognitive styles. A pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was conducted to investigate the effects of the interaction between cognitive style and multimedia learning mode on students' learning motivation, speaking anxiety, oral presentation, and move analysis. The student sample consisted of two classes of 93 students. All of the students took the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) to identify whether their cognitive style was field dependent or independent. The results showed a significant effect for the interaction between the cognitive styles and the learning modes on the students' oral presentation and speaking anxiety. Their structural moves in oral presentations with the ISVVR learning mode showed more similar spoken genre patterns to those of TED speakers. Archival crime data collected by a police agency in Upstate New York from 2008 to 2015; outcome, sentencing, and incarceration data collected by the New York State's Department of Criminal Justice Statistics; and demographic data collected by the U.S. Census were analyzed to explore how a suspect's race and sex affect the investigation, prosecution, conviction, and sentencing in larceny cases. Results suggest that Black men were more likely to be the targets of excess suspicion, less likely to be granted leniency by prosecutors, no more likely to be convicted, but, if convicted, more likely to be incarcerated than White men. Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a rare, severe, and sometimes fatal form of childhood psoriasis. The first line therapies include acitretin, cyclosporin A, and methotrexate which take effect slowly and have varying long-term side effects for children. Recently, the anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), adalimumab has shown efficacy in adult patients with pustular psoriasis; however, there is lack of evidence of its usage in the pediatric population. Data on efficacy of adalimumab in treating pediatric GPP along with a literature review are presented. A total of seven patients had marked clearance and reduction in PGA and systemic/laboratory score within the first week of first injection and achieved almost complete clearance of skin lesions by 1-month follow up. In literature, adalimumab treating pustular psoriasis in pediatric has been described in six children who failed in prior treatment. All six patients showed a satisfactory therapeutic effect. Subcutaneous injection of adalimumab every other week in the treatment of children with GPP has significant clinical efficacy with rapid clearance of skin lesions, providing a novel alternative for children with pustular psoriasis who responded poorly to traditional treatment or are not suitable for traditional treatment. This study tested the influences of energy constraints on business profit ratios based on mathematical models of energy constraints, green technological progress and business profit ratios using data of 1,039,330 qualified Chinese industrial enterprises between 2001 and 2013. Test results showed a generally non-linear relationship between energy constraints and business profit ratios. Specifically, for high-tech enterprises in East China, the relationship is U-shaped; and for low-tech enterprises in Middle and West China, the relationship is N-shaped. Proper energy policies can effectively improve business profit ratios and stimulate green technological progress in enterprises. Although China’s energy policies still have not realised relevant practical effects, proper energy policies should be implemented according to the features of different areas and enterprises. The rail fastener plays an important role in supporting the rail and isolating the train-track system vibrations. Its damage detection is therefore an inevitable part in railway maintenance to ensure the system performance. Recently, deep learning techniques are widely applied to structural health monitoring, including damage detection of the rail fastener based on visions. However, the vision-based detection is mainly limited to visible damages. To address this limitation, this work presents a vibration-based detection method by introducing the fully convolutional network (FCN) to identify invisible damages of fasteners. Firstly, three damage categories are defined and five damage degrees are equivalently represented by modifying the stiffness and damping coefficients of target fasteners. Then, a vehicle-track vertically coupled dynamics model with variable vehicle speeds is established to obtain axle box accelerations (ABAs) under excitations of fastener damage and track irregularity. Finally, a fastener damage detection network is designed based on the FCN architecture to predict damage degrees by inputting the ABA, the track irregularity and the vehicle speed simultaneously. The detection performance is estimated and the network robustness to noise is analysed. To compare the test–retest reliability and random measurement errors of the Barthel Index (BI) and modified Barthel Index (MBI) in patients with chronic stroke. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the minimal detectable change (MDC) were applied respectively to examine the test–retest reliability (about 2 weeks apart) and the random measurement errors. The MDC% was used to adjust the cut-off score for determining whether a real change had been achieved, if heteroscedasticity existed. A total of 60 patients participated. The BI and MBI both had high ICCs (0.94 and 0.94, respectively) with small MDCs (16.2 and 15.4, respectively) and MDC%s (21.2% and 19.0%, respectively), indicating that both measures have comparable reliability in repeated assessments. However, moderate associations (r = −0.47 for the BI and −0.59 for the MBI) were found between the means of tests and retests and the absolute values of change scores, indicating heteroscedasticity. These findings suggest that a fixed MDC value is not appropriate for determining the real change in both measures because the amount of random measurement error varies with the patients' ADL function. The MBI, which showed excellent test–retest reliability and relatively lower random measurement error than the BI, appears to be a better ADL measure. The MDC% adjusted value is recommended to determine whether the change scores are beyond random measurement error. The MBI is recommended for clinical and research applications because it has better test–retest reliability and relatively lower random measurement error than those of the original BI. This study examines the possible effects of a gender ratio change on China's wage income distributions with the unconditional quantile estimation. Using data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey for 1989–2011, the unconditional wage income distributions before and after a change in gender ratio are studied graphically. The estimated wage income density functions are confirmed to be skewed to the right and leptokurtic. An increase in gender ratio increases wage income and mitigate wage income inequality. We conclude that, other things being equal, the decreasing trend in gender ratio will enhance the wage income inequality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Professional athletes achieve success while experiencing tremendous stress from their work and family domains. However, few studies have examined stress among professional athlete couples to explore how professional athletes' job stress and family demands influence their work-family interactions with their partners. The present study extends athlete stress research by exploring the specific stress events that interact with professional athletes' family demands to understand work-family and family-work conflict in sports and ways to generate cross over effect between these couples. Semistructured interviews were conducted. Data were collected from seven professional athletes and their romantic partners (7 couples). A thematic analysis was utilised to interpret the transcripts. According to the results, specific stress events (e.g., lost games, sports injuries, requested trades, and unexpected retirement) and family demands (e.g., family responsibilities, financial worries, and raising children) contribute to athletes' work and family role conflict. Moreover, this study interprets the dynamic process of cross over effects in professional athlete couples based on empathic reactions, common stressors, and family members' indirect influencing. Sucrose plays a crucial role in plant growth and development. Sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS, EC 2.4.1.14) is a key rate-limiting enzyme in the sucrose metabolism of plants. To date, the genome-wide identification, characterisation, and expression profile analysis of SPS gene families have been reported in many species but not in pineapple (Ananas comosus). In this study, five SPS genes (AcSPS1–5), which contained sucrose synthase, glucosyltransferase, and SPP-like conserved domains, were identified. The phylogenetic tree indicated that these AcSPS genes were divided into three clades, i.e. A, B, and C. The spatiotemporal expression pattern of AcSPS gene families were first examined in pineapple. Among all tissues, AcSPS2 had the highest expression in flesh. Meanwhile, AcSPS2 expression was significantly upregulated during fruit development. Furthermore, AcSPS2 expression, SPS activity, and sucrose content consistently increased with fruit development. These results may indicate that AcSPS2 played a major role in sucrose metabolism during fruit development. AcSPS5 was strongly expressed in the peduncle, pericarp, and core. To examine the relationships among therapist-reported, patient-reported, and objective assessment scores of balance function. Inpatients with stroke and occupational therapists were recruited. The objective balance scores were measured using the Balance Computerized Adaptive Testing (Balance CAT) system. The therapist and patient-reported scores were evaluated using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and Likert-type scale. Eighty-eight patients and 16 therapists participated. The correlations (r= 0.64 and 0.65; R-squared about 0.42 at baseline and follow-up assessments, respectively) between the therapist-reported VAS scores and the Balance CAT system were larger than those (r = 0.31 and 0.21) between the patient-reported VAS scores and the Balance CAT system. Low correlations (r = 0.27 and 0.26 for VAS and Likert-type scores, respectively) were found between the therapist-reported and patient-reported change scores. Low correlations (r = 0.12–0.17) were found between the change scores of therapist- and patient-reported ratings and those of the Balance CAT system. The therapists' judgments explained <50% of variance of the Balance CAT system scores. Neither therapist-reported nor patient-reported change scores reflected the changes demonstrated by the objective assessments. Further studies are warranted to confirm our findings. Neither therapist- nor patient-reported balance function and change could effectively reflect the scores resulting from objective assessments. The routine use of objective balance assessments should not be replaced by therapists' subjective judgments. A series of 3-subsituted quinolinehydroxamic acids has been synthesised and evaluated for their effect on human lung cancer cell line (A549), human colorectal cancer cell line (HCT116) and HDAC isoforms 1, 2, 6, and 8. The results indicated that substitution at C3 of quinoline is favoured for HDAC6 selectivity. Two compounds (25 and 26) were also found to be potent anti-proliferative compounds with IC50 values ranging from 1.29 to 2.13 µM against A549 and HCT116 cells. These compounds displayed remarkable selectivity for HDAC6 over other HDAC isoforms with nanomolar IC50 values. Western blot analysis revealed that compounds of this series activate apoptotic caspase pathway as indicated by cleavage of caspase 3, 8, and 9 and also increase phosphorylated H2AX thus inducing DNA double strand fragmentation in a concentration dependent manner. Bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP6) is a regulatory peptide secreted by oocytes and granulosa cells that locally regulates folliculogenesis and follicular development. To determine BMP6 location, we studied BMP6 expression in human follicles using immunohistochemistry, real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blot analysis. RT-PCR was performed on 354 individual cumulus cell (CC) masses from 48 women to investigate the relationship between BMP6 mRNA expression in CCs and oocyte developmental potential. Results showed that BMP6 protein was mainly located in oocytes from preantral follicles and in granulosa cells from antral follicles. BMP6 mRNA expression was much higher in oocytes than in CCs and mural granulosa cells (mGCs) from preovulatory follicles (p < 0.01), and BMP6 protein level was higher in CCs than in mGCs (p < 0.05). BMP6 mRNA expression was higher in CCs from immature oocytes than in those from mature oocytes (p < 0.05). However, BMP6 mRNA expression in CCs was not associated with oocyte fertilization, embryo morphological grading, or implantation. In conclusion, BMP6 was mainly expressed in oocytes at all human follicular developmental stages and BMP6 mRNA expression in CCs may be negatively correlated with oocyte maturation. Medical schools employ various tools to select suitable medical students (MS). This study investigated whether MS who were admitted through multiple mini-interviews (MMI) and MS who were admitted through Taiwan's Joint College Entrance Written Test (JCEWT) differed in their characteristics. First-year MS from seven medical schools completed a semi-structured questionnaire that inquired into their channel of admission (MMI or JCEWT), gender, location (metropolitan or rural), high school type (public or private), parents' socioeconomic status (SES), and motivations to study medicine. In total, 513 MS participated, 493 (96%) returned valid questionnaires, and 397 were enrolled in the study, (MMI group: 205 MS; JCEWT group: 192 MS). Irrespective of channel of admission, most MS came from metropolitan areas (80%–86%), belonged to high-SES families (73%–76%), and had mixed motivations (51%–96%). Female applicants, private school leavers, and those who were less motivated by the physician's SES were more likely to be selected through the MMI channel than the JCEWT channel. Irrespective of the channels of entry, MS had similar demographics and motivations for studying medicine. MS selected through MMI had different characteristics than those selected through a JCEWT. This study aimed to investigate the influence of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) on the severity and short-time curative effect of myasthenia gravis (MG) in children. Data of 132 MG children were retrospectively analyzed, and data of 140 healthy controls (HC group) in the same period were collected. The data of both groups were compared and analyzed. NLR of MG group was significantly higher than that of HC group (Z = 2.644, p = 0.008). According to NLR level, patients were divided into 3 groups: N1 (NLR < 1.03), N2 (NLR 1.03-2.17), and N3 (NLR > 2.17). Significant differences in white blood cell counts, course of disease, uric acid, albumin and the time of hospital stay among the 3 groups were observed (p < 0.05, 0.01). The results of logistic regression revealed that NLR (adjusted OR = 3.874, 95% CI 1.359-11.045, p = 0.011) was the risk factor of MG, and it was risk factor of higher QMG during admission (adjusted OR = 2.989, 95% CI 1.247-7.160, p = 0.014) as well. Using the NLR level for the MG diagnostic test, the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was 0.765 [95%CI (0.710-0.820), p = 0.000], with a cut-off value of 1.39, sensitivity of 0.833, and specificity of 0.479. Cox regression analysis suggested that NLR (N1: Wald = 9.262, p = 0.010, N2: HR = 12.267, 95%CI 2.432-61.863, p = 0.000, and N3: HR = 8.142, 95%CI 1.209-77.754, p = 0.032) was associated with poor efficacy at discharge. Elevated NLR was considered as an independent risk factor of poor outcomes during discharge. NLR could reflect disease severity and short time curative effect in children with MG to some extent. A controllable viewing angle optical film (CVOF) using a microprism array filled with liquid crystal is proposed, the display performance of small and large viewing angles can be tunable for liquid-crystal displays (LCDs). Two microprisms with different heights are formed in the proposed optical film. The different diffuse abilities of the proposed optical film can be obtained by adjusting the applied voltage, the contrast loss problem of the conventional optical film is solved. Our simulation results reveal that the contrast of the normal viewing angle is increased from 1429 to 4909 as the applied voltage is zero, and the brightness is increased by 41.4% and 89.4% at the large polar viewing angle (45° and 60°) when the applied voltage is 15 V, respectively. In this paper, a new default intensity model with dual frailties is proposed and an empirical evidence is provided to confirm the model's adequacy. In addition to the conventional explanatory variables, Duffie et al. introduces a time frailty and Chava et al. considers an industrial frailty to model the conditional default dependence. However, from an empirical study on Taiwan's public listed firms, Lin and Chen points out that the time frailty can only catch the default dependence along the time but not among the industries. On the other hand, the industrial frailty can only capture the default dependence from the industrial correlation but not from the time dependence. Hence, the default intensity model with time and industrial frailties is recommended. This paper introduces a dual frailty model to incorporate time and industrial frailties. Using the empirical data of Taiwan's public listed firms from January of 1995 to January of 2015, the dual frailty model is estimated and the Fisher's dispersion tests are conducted for bins from time and from industries. Our empirical findings indicate that the dual frailty model captures not only the time dependence of default clustering but also the industrial correlations. Our aim was to explore the role of crizotinib, targeted anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK), on r/r systemic anaplastic large cell lymphoma (sALCL). The treated group prospectively screened 20 patients. After taking crizotinib in the first week, 16 patients who were tolerant and sensitive received the combination of crizotinib with chemotherapy. The control group included 27 patients receiving chemotherapy in the same hospital during the same period. The objective remission rates of the treated and control group were 81.3% and 74.1% (p =.869), respectively. The progression-free survival rates at two years in treated and control group were 68.7% and 45.0% (HR = 0.42, 95% CI 0.17–0.99, p <.05), respectively. The overall survival rates at two years in the treated and control group were 86.1% and 78.9% (p =.385, HR = 0.51, 95% CI 0.11–2.30), respectively. The main adverse events included elevated transaminase, diarrhea, and vision abnormalities. Secondary crashes, roadway clearance time, and incident clearance time are three primary performance measures for traffic incident management. Crash databases, which are the main source of information on secondary crashes, often fail to identify or misidentify secondary crashes. Manual reviews of crash reports can improve the accuracy of crash classification, but they are expensive and time consuming. To improve the identification of secondary crashes, this study developed a text mining approach to distinguish secondary crashes based on crash narratives. To deal with the unstructured nature of crash narratives, a four-step process involving tokenization, counting, vectorization, and normalization was implemented to transform their content into numeric vectors suitable for machine learning. Next, an evaluation of several classification models found the logistic regression model produced the most accurate classifications. A single-word representation of the narratives offered the best performance compared to more complicated schemes and is recommended for future implementation. A review of classification results showed the model is effective at identifying keywords which characterize secondary crashes. Some false classifications may be a consequence of subjective reviewer interpretations and potential mislabeling. Lipopeptides have been reported to exhibit anti-obesity effects. In this study, we obtained a Bacillus velezensis strain FJAT-52631 that could coproduce iturins, fengycins, and surfactins. Results showed that the FJAT-52631 crude lipopeptide, purified fengycin, iturin, and surfactin standards exhibited strong inhibition activities against lipase with dose-dependence manners (half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) = 0.011, 0.005, 0.056, and 0.005 mg/mL, respectively). Moreover, fengycin and surfactin had the comparable activities with orlistat, but iturin not. It was revealed that the inhibition mechanism and type of the lipopeptides were reversible and competitive. The quenching mechanism of lipase was static and only one binding site between lipase and lipopoeptide was inferred from the fluorescence analysis. The docking analysis displayed that fengycin and surfactin could directly interact with the active amino acid residues (Ser or Asp) of lipase, but not with iturin. Due to increased environmental awareness, the issue of recycling and disassembling damaged or malfunctioning products after consumption to obtain useable parts for remanufacturing has become essential. This study considers a hybrid production system with both external and internal reverse logistics in which the external recycled products are utilised for remanufacturing to satisfy demand first, and then the ordinary manufacturing process may supplement this if there is any shortage in production. In addition, the defective items produced internally by either the manufacturing or the remanufacturing process can also be repaired by a remediation process. The objective of this study is to determine the optimal strategy for the manufacturing, remanufacturing, disposal, and remediation rates. Three conditions are considered in which the production strategy varies with different yield rates and capacity limits. Through utilizing the mixed-ligand method, a coordination polymer (CP) based on Cu(II), [Cu2(bpta)(4,4′-bipy)(H2O)2]n (1), has been prepared from Cu(NO3)2·3H2O, 4,4′-bipyridine, and biphenyl-3,3′,5,5′-tetracarboxylic acid as the starting materials under solvothermal conditions. Its treatment activity on hand–foot–mouth disease (HFMD) was assessed and the compound's mechanism was also revealed. After establishing the animal model of HFMD and indicated treatment, the sympathetic excitability was evaluated by measuring the content of catecholamines. Real time RT-PCR method was conducted to measure the α receptor relative expression levels on the sympathetic nerve. Purpose: To determine the role of IQ-domain GTPase-activating protein1 (IQGAP-1) in tight junctions of human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs) and its effect against P. aeruginosa (PAK) invasion.Material and Methods: Primary human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs), immortalized HCECs, and IQGAP-1 RNA knockdown HCECs (siHCECs) were used. Confocal microscopy, transepithelial electrical resistance (TER), trypan blue exclusion assay and gentamicin invasion assay were done.Results: In primary and immortalized HCECs, IQGAP-1 co-localized with zonular occludin-1 (ZO-1) and actin. Enhanced actin and ZO-1 aggregation were seen in siHCECs. IQGAP-1 knockdown significantly increased TER of immortalized HCECs (P < .0001). Cell viability after PAK infection increased for siHCECs for up to 4 h after infection. PAK intracellular invasion was significantly lowered by 50% in siHCECs at 1 h post-infection.Conclusion: IQGAP-1 knockdown increased the strength and integrity of tight junctions and may provide an early protective effect against P. aeruginosa invasion. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between alterations in circulating leukocytes and the initiation and progression of DR in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Forty-one patients with T1D [13 mild non-proliferative DR (mNPDR), 14 active proliferative DR (aPDR) and 14 inactive PDR (iPDR)], and 13 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were recruited prospectively. Circulating leukocytes, including CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells, CD14+CD16−, CD14−CD16+ and CD14+CD16+ monocytes; CD16+HLA-DR− neutrophils, CD19+ B-cells and CD56+ natural killer cells and their cell surface adhesion molecules and chemokine receptors (HLA-DR, CD62L, CCR2, CCR5, CD66a, CD157 and CD305) were examined by flow cytometry. In DR patients, compared to healthy controls, increased proportions of neutrophils (p =.0152); reduced proportions of lymphocytes (p =.0002), HLA-DR+ leukocytes (p =.0406) and non-classical monocytes (p =.0204); and reduced expression of CD66a (p =.0048) and CD157 (p =.0007) on CD4+ T cells were observed. Compared to healthy controls, CD19+ B cells were reduced at the mNPDR but not aPDR patients. Total lymphocytes, CD4+ T cells and CD8+ T cells progressively decreased whereas neutrophils, the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and the neutrophil/CD4+ ratio progressively increased from early to late stages of DR, reaching statistical significance at the aPDR stage. Longer diabetes duration was associated with a reduced proportion of CD8+ T cells (p =.002) and increased neutrophil/CD8+ ratio (p =.033). In this pilot study, DR is associated with increased innate cellular immunity especially neutrophils and reduced adaptive cellular immunity particularly lymphocytes. Impaired B-cell immunity may play a role in the initiation of DR; whereas impaired T-cell immunity with increased neutrophil response may contribute to progression of DR from non-proliferative to proliferative stages in T1D patients. Pembrolizumab/axitinib significantly prolonged overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), and increased objective response rate versus sunitinib in the phase III trial KEYNOTE-426 among previously untreated patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This study assessed the cost-effectiveness of pembrolizumab/axitinib versus other first-line treatments of advanced RCC from a US public healthcare payer perspective. A partitioned survival model with three states (progression-free, progressed, death) evaluated lifetime costs and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) for pembrolizumab/axitinib and other first-line regimens: sunitinib, pazopanib and avelumab/axitinib in the overall population; and sunitinib, cabozantinib and nivolumab/ipilimumab in the subgroup with intermediate/poor prognostic risk. Costs of treatments, adverse events and medical resources were estimated. OS, PFS and treatment duration were extrapolated using parametric models fitted to KEYNOTE-426 data and hazard ratios from network meta-analyses. Utilities were derived through mixed-effects regressions of KEYNOTE-426 EuroQol-5 Dimensions-3 Levels data. In the overall population, pembrolizumab/axitinib was associated with incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) of $95,725/QALY versus sunitinib and $128,210/QALY versus pazopanib, and was dominant (lower cost, higher effectiveness) versus avelumab/axitinib, with incremental QALY gains of 2.73, 2.40 and 1.80 versus these therapies, respectively. In the intermediate/poor-risk subgroup, base-case ICERs for pembrolizumab/axitinib were $101,030/QALY versus sunitinib, $6989/QALY versus cabozantinib, and $130,934/QALY versus nivolumab/ipilimumab, with incremental QALY gains of 2.62, 1.78 and 1.06 versus these therapies. In this economic evaluation, pembrolizumab/axitinib was associated with higher life expectancy and QALYs and, based on typical willingness-to-pay thresholds of $150,000–$180,000/QALY, was found cost-effective versus other first-line treatments for advanced RCC in the US. A new method is proposed to efficiently simulate vehicle-track-subgrade vertical dynamic interactions based on the Green function method. In this simulation, the vehicle-track-subgrade system is divided into two subsystems, the vehicle-rail subsystem and the slab-subgrade subsystem, which are coupled through fastener connections. In the vehicle-rail subsystem, the vehicle is modelled as a multi-rigid-body system with 10 degrees of freedom, and the rail is simplified as a Bernoulli-Euler beam supported by rail pads. Dynamic equations of the vehicle-rail subsystem are described by differential equations. In the slab-subgrade subsystem, a three-dimensional finite element model is established to obtain the Green functions of the system induced by a unit impulse excitation. Based on the derived Green functions, dynamic equations of the slab-subgrade subsystem are formulated by the Duhamel integral. The interaction between the two subsystems is transferred by the fastener forces, and the dynamic responses of the whole system are solved through explicit numerical methods. The proposed method is subsequently validated through a detailed numerical comparison with the result obtained by the finite element method. This paper investigates the multi-level warehouse layout problem with indeterminate factors, in which the monthly demands and horizontal transportation distances are described by uncertain variables. We first consider the distribution function of the total cost for transportation. Second, two uncertain models, namely, the chance-constrained programming model and the chance-maximum programming model, are developed to lay out the multi-level warehouse under uncertainty. Some properties of the models are discussed to solve the models. The properties point out that the optimal solution to the chance-constrained programming model is equivalent to a corresponding deterministic model. Additionally, we also discuss the relation between the chance-constrained programming model and the chance-maximum programming model, which leads to an effective approach to search for the optimal solution to the chance-maximum programming model. To study the relationship between the expression of 10 selected genes in cumulus cells and the corresponding oocyte development competence, and the effect of patient age and body mass index on gene expression of cumulus cells, we collected 354 cumulus cell masses associated with individual oocyte from 48 women. The expression levels of the genes involved in glucose metabolism (PFKP, PKM2, LDHA and GFPT) and expansion (HAS2, VCAN, TNFAIP6, PTGS2, PTX3 and SDC4) in cumulus cells were detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. These were compared among oocyte maturity, fertilization, embryo morphology and implantation, and analyzed the effect of the subject's age and body mass index. Cumulus cell PFKP expression from mature oocytes was higher than those from immature oocytes (P = 0.014), and VCAN expression was higher from oocytes that developed into high-quality embryos (P = 0.024). TNFAIP6 expression in cumulus cells from fertilized oocytes was lower than that from unfertilized oocytes (P = 0.044). The levels of VCAN, TNFAIP6, PTX3 and SDC4 were changed significantly as a function of the subject's age and body mass index. In conclusion, the level of VCAN expression in cumulus cells is positively correlated with the early embryo morphology score, and with further development could perhaps be used to evaluate oocyte developmental competence to complement embryonic morphological assessment. Dark tea-iron nanoparticles (DT-Fe NPs) were prepared using extracts of dark tea leaves as a reducing agent, and further underwent thermal treatment in air. The H2S removal performances of thermal-treated DT-Fe NPs for biogas were further evaluated using a custom-designed fixed-bed reactor (reaction temperature of 250°C, H2S content of 1%). Significant morphology and chemical composition differences were observed when DT-Fe NPs were treated at different temperatures (300–800oC). X-ray diffractometer analysis revealed that a phase transition from γ-Fe2O3 to α-Fe2O3 occurred under heat treatment. When the thermal treatment temperature was 300°C, only α-Fe2O3 was detected. Both α-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe2O3 were present in the sample treated at 400°C. When the thermal treatment temperature was 500–800°C, γ-Fe2O3 in the sample was completely converted to α-Fe2O3. The H2S removal capacity is 14.72 mg H2S/g for DT-Fe NPs without treatment. However, the value increased significantly to 408.30 mg H2S/g after 400°C thermal treatment, which can be explained by the formation of highly active γ-Fe2O3. The reaction product of thermal-treated DT-Fe NPs at 400°C and H2S were further characterized by X-ray diffractometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A series of novel 1,4-pentadien-3-one derivatives containing a thiophene sulfonate group were designed, synthesized, and their antibacterial activities were assessed. Antibacterial bioassays indicated that some of the title compounds exerted significant bioactivities against Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. Citri (Xac), Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs) and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. Oryzae (Xoo). Especially for Xac, the value of minimum 50% effective concentration (EC50) of compound 4-((1E,4E)-5-(3-nitrophenyl)-3-oxopenta-1,4-dien-1-yl)phenylthiophene-2-sulfonate (3k) is 11.0 μg/mL, which is significantly superior to bismerthiazol (BT) (51.6 µg/mL) and thiodiazole-copper (TC) (94.7 µg/mL). Meanwhile, the mechanism of action of compound 3k was confirmed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Purpose: Gait variability analysis has been clinically adopted to characterize the presentation of various neurological diseases. However, literature and practice lack a comprehensive murine model assessment of the gait deficits that result from transient focal ischemic stroke. Further, correlations between gait parameters and the gene expression profiles associated with brain ischemia have yet to be identified. This study quantitatively assesses gait deficits through a murine model of transient focal cerebral ischemia on day 7 to determine associations between gait deficits and ischemia-related gene expressions. Methods: A total of 182 dynamic and static gait parameters from the transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) murine model for simulating human transient focal ischemic stroke on day 7 were measured using the CatWalk system. Pearson's correlation analysis and genes associated with ischemia were identified from the existing literature to aid the investigation of the relationship between gait variability and gene expression profiles. Results: Thirty-nine gait parameters and the mRNA expression levels of four of the eight ischemia-associated genes exhibited more significant change in the MCAO models (p < 0.005) on day 7. Twenty-six gait parameters exhibited strong correlations with four ischemia-associated genes. Conclusion: This examination of gait variability and the strong correlation to the gene expression profiles associated with transient focal brain ischemia on day 7 provides a quantitative and reliable assessment of the MCAO model's motor performance. As a typical class of electrically light-transmittance-switchable (ELTS) composites materials, polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films have been widely used in displays, smart windows, light shutters, etc. However, the commercialised PDLC film still requires a comparatively high voltage to maintain its transparent state, leading to huge power consumption and even a potential safety risk. In this regard, we proposed a 'heat followed UV' stepwise polymerisation strategy for preparing a kind of ELTS film with a low driving voltage (~20.7 V) through constructing a coexistent system of polymer dispersed and polymer stabilised liquid crystal (PD&SLC). In this new PD&SLC system, vertically orientated polymer networks were formed within LC domains to induce the vertical alignment of LC, thereby reducing the driving voltage. Also, the as-made PD&SLC film exhibited good flexibility due to the high content of polymer. Moreover, the effects of the liquid crystalline polymerisable monomers content on the polymer morphologies as well as the electro-optical properties of the as-made PD&SLC films were elaborately investigated. Antoni Tàpies conferred new meanings to everyday things through his singular creative processes and material-object arrangements. Moreover, he brought the objects, materials, and subjects of art into a sensorial and intellectual play to achieve a sui generis view of art. The analysis of his hybrid conception of artwork has three points of exploration. First, he questioned the character of the thingness of artwork as well as thingness in work of art. Second, his artistic creations achieved an exceptional sense of playfulness through the recontextualisation of words, things, everyday objects, and matter. Third, influenced by East Asian aesthetic schools of thought, Tàpies' works of art display change and transience as the essence of material things, which are, together with the idea of hybrid or hybridisation, the protagonists of his art. The studies on Stauntonia brachyanthera led to the isolations of 7 normal and nor-oleanane triterpenoids, including 2 new ones. Compounds 1 and 3 showed moderate inhibitory activity on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 macrophages with the IC50 values of 16.09 and 20.19 μM, respectively, which were stronger than that of positive control. A primary structure-activity relationship was also discussed, which revealed the anti-inflammation abilities of three types triterpenoids and their potential possibilities as the candidate compounds for the treatment of inflammation. In this paper, polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films based on epoxy-mercaptan system were prepared by thermal-initiated polymerization. The effects of the liquid crystal (LC) content, the proportion and the functionality of epoxy monomers on the polymer structures and electro-optical properties of the as-made PDLC films were investigated systematically. It was found that the morphologies of the polymer matrix can be altered from polymer meshes to polymer balls by increasing the LC content as well as the functionality of epoxy monomers. Accordingly, the electro-optical properties could be regulated by the morphologies of polymer networks. Especially, the as-made PDLC films with homogeneous porous structures exhibited the optimal electro-optical properties. Consequently, this work offers a meaningful approach to control the microstructures and optimize the electro-optical properties of PDLC films, which indeed can form a wonderful footstone for the wide application of PDLC. This study used Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory to examine Generation Z investors' socially responsible investment perceptions, utilizing data collected from Taiwan and the United States. Generation Z is the most global and socially empowered generation in history, and whether social responsibility appeals to Generation Z warrants investigation. Of 412 questionnaires collected in the United States, 380 were usable, and of 475 collected in Taiwan, 439 were usable. This study exained four variables, namely nationality, gender, work experience, and share ownership; these variables affected how the participants in this study understood and accepted the concept of socially responsible investment. These results provide interesting insight into Generation Z's pro-social attitudes, Perceived consumer effectiveness and trust. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (S.A.R.S.) epidemic on the long-run relationship between China and four Asian stock markets. To this end, we first employ the advanced smooth time-varying cointegration model to investigate the existence of a time-varying cointegration relation among these markets and then employ the difference-in-differences approach to analyse whether or not the S.A.R.S. epidemic impacted the long-run relation between China and these four markets during the period 1998-2008, covering 5 years before and after the S.A.R.S. outbreak. Our results support the existence of a time-varying cointegration relation in the aggregate stock price indices, and that the S.A.R.S. epidemic did weaken the long-run relationship between China and the four markets. Therefore, stockholders and policy makers should be concerned about the influence of catastrophic epidemic diseases on the financial integration of stock market in Asia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
