To report the 5-year results of chorioretinal atrophy (CRA) progression in patients with punctate inner choroidopathy (PIC) or multifocal choroiditis (MFC). A retrospective study included PIC/MFC patients with secondary CRA formation. The area of CRA was measured and the progression rate was calculated. Multiple regression analysis was performed to investigate risk factors associated with CRA progression. Forty-five eyes of 36 patients were included. The mean CRA size significantly increased after an average of 4.83 years of follow-up with progression rate of 0.69 mm2/year. Moreover, we had identified the axial length and initial PIC lesion number as significant risk factors for CRA progression. Significant CRA enlargement is noted in PIC/MFC patients after 5 years of follow-up. The progression rate is associated with axial length and initial PIC numbers. Aggressive treatment is suggested for eyes with more initial lesion numbers and longer axial length to control the faster CRA progression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To report the long-term prognosis of punctate inner choroidopathy (PIC) or multifocal choroiditis (MFC) and associated zonal outer retinopathy (ZOR).Method: Retrospective study in patients with PIC/MFC and ZOR with a clinical follow-up of 4 years or longer.Results: There were 14 patients in this study (M: F = 11:3). All patients received systemic steroid therapy. The initial and final median logarithm of minimal angle of resolution of BCVA were 1.00 and 0.22 (p = .002). Ellipsoid zone recovery was noted in all patients. The median visual field loss improved from -6.38 dB to -3.41 dB (p = .035). The median of total area of PIC/MFC lesions enlarged from 6.82 mm2 to 8.77 mm2 (p = .005). Recurrent disease was noted in 4 eyes and maintenance steroid was needed in 3 eyes.Conclusion: With steroid therapy, most patients with PIC/MFC and ZOR had good visual prognosis. This article deals with the path-dependent features of financialization of housing in Taiwan, an East Asian developmental state. The levels of foreign capital and securitization in Taiwan's housing market remain relatively low, meaning domestic capital, of which there is an abundance, is the major financial source of such speculation. The process does not include the retrenchment of the welfare state, because Taiwan has been a homeowner society. After financial liberalization in the 1980s, Taiwan's state intervention in the housing and financial sectors has actually intensified via the enactment of more regulations to decrease the role of the informal financial and housing sectors. As a result of neoliberalization giving precedence to market mechanisms, various low-interest mortgage programs in the 1990s, all subsidized by public funding, have increased the rate of homeownership and sustained housing prices. Even though this varied the development of housing financialization, housing in Taiwan has largely become a tool of speculation, and housing affordability has become a serious problem. Purpose: To evaluate the long-term outcome of active choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in punctate inner choroidopathy (PIC) or multifocal choroiditis (MFC) after intravitreal bevacizumab treatment.Methods: Retrospective study of consecutive patients of PIC/MFC complicated with active CNV. Outcome measures included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), total number of intravitreal injections of bevacizumab and recurrence of CNV. Correlation analysis was performed to find the correlation of various clinical factors and final BCVA.Results: There were 23 eyes in 22 patients with a mean age of 33.22 years included in this study. The mean duration of follow-up was 6.48 years. Improvement of BCVA was noted through the first 3 years and at the final follow-up. BCVA at 1, 6, 12 months and recurrence of CNV were correlated with final BCVA.Conclusion: Most patients of PIC/MFC complicated with CNV managed with intravitreal bevacizumab had improved BCVA over 4 years. A new approach to moral education using blended learning has been developed. This approach involves 10 scenarios that are designed as a web-based game and serves as a basis for group moral-consequence-based reasoning, which is developed based on a hypothetical-deductive model. The aim of the study was to examine the changes in students' blended learning interest and reasoning ability in a time series experimental design. After playing the game with the 10 initial scenarios during the first week of the study, participants were subjected to five blended learning sessions that required them to discuss the consequences of one of the 10 scenarios using hypothetical-deductive reasoning. After six weeks, the data from the 110 participants were analyzed using time series statistics. The results indicated that players were highly interested in the game, although their interest had a tendency to decrease slightly over time. Repetitive game play (i.e. practice) was positively associated with the players' moral reasoning performance. The study results may lend support to the design of a game with additional or more highly complex content for players to further develop students' consequential reasoning ability. Educational games can be viewed in two ways, “learning to play” or “playing to learn.” The Chinese Idiom String Up Game was specifically designed to examine the effect of “learning to play” on the interrelatedness of players' gameplay interest, competitive anxiety, and perceived utility of pre-game learning (PUPGL). Data from 288 subjects were validated and analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Results indicated that players' pre-game learning attitude (PGLA) served positively to predict participants' gameplay interest and reflected a higher level of PUPGL of learning gameplay. PGLA was negatively correlated to competitive anxiety but was not significantly associated with players' PUPGL of learning gameplay. These results implied that by enhancing players' willingness to learn before engaging in a competitive game can contribute to increased gameplay interest and reduced competitive anxiety, thereby reinforcing the benefits of educational games. We investigate the dynamic reaction of stock market herding in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan to unexpected shocks from domestic and U.S. market factors. In China and Taiwan, herding is more pronounced, and the investors tend to herd with the rising stock market returns. Overconfident investors will herd on the subsequent trading days under market stress. Compared with the response to the domestic market factors, the responses of herding in the Greater China stock market to the U.S. market factors are weaker. After the 2007–8 financial crisis, the U.S. market factors highly explain the forecast error variance of herding in the Shanghai A-share and Taiwan markets. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of cigarette smoking with semen quality and reproductive hormone levels in 192 healthy men 20–65 years old, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Exposure to cigarette smoking was classified three ways based on: 1) smoking status (yes vs. no); 2) the number of cigarettes per day (0, 1–10, > 10); and 3) pack-years (0, 1–10, 11–20, > 20). Serum levels of total testosterone (TT), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and total estradiol (TE) were measured. Semen quality, including concentration, motility, vitality, and morphology, were assessed. Mean levels of smoking, semen quality, and hormones were compared using the multiple linear regression, while controlling for possible confounding factors, including age, body mass index (BMI), cadmium levels in seminal plasma, and alcohol consumption. Current smokers, who smoked 10 cigarettes per day, had a lower mean percentage of normal morphology (3.2% and 5.5% in nonsmokers,P= 0.040), and a higher mean level of TT (454.7 pmol/L and 439.8 pmol/L in nonsmokers,P= 0.048), as compared with nonsmokers. Also, current smokers at > 20 pack-year had a lower percentage of normal morphology and a lower mean level of TT as compared with nonsmokers; no significant difference was observed in LH, FSH, sperm concentration, vitality, and motility between smokers and nonsmokers based on the number of cigarette per day and the pack-year. Sperm vitality statistically correlated with FSH (β = −0.36P= 0.015) and TE (β = 0.35,P= 0.018), while motility statistically correlated with TT (β = 0.228,P= 0.045). The objective of this article was to assess whether benzo(a)pyrene (B[a]P) alters reproductive hormones, which in turn leads to decreased spermatozoa quality and spermatogenic cell levels. Hsd: ICR (CD1) 10-week old males were orally exposed to B[a]P at 1, 10, 50, and 100 mg/kg/day of body weight for 30 and 60 days. At the end of the experiment, mice were anesthetized and reproductive tissues, i.e., testes, seminal vesicles, and epididymis, were collected. Spermatogenic cells and mature spermatozoa were recovered from the testes and cauda epididymis, respectively. Spermatozoa quality, including concentration, morphology, motility, and viability, was examined. Testosterone, estradiol, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels in serum were determined using the Enzyme Immunoassay/Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (EIA/ELISA). Mice exposed to B[a]P at 50 mg/kg/day and 100 mg/kg/day for 30 days and 60 days exhibited a significantly decrease in serum testosterone and estradiol levels as compared with the control, while FSH and LH remained stable. The levels of testosterone and estradiol were positively correlated with decreased spermatozoa motility (p = 0.025 and 0.014, respectively), viability (p = 0.002 and 0.018, respectively), and morphology (p = 0.007 and 0.018, respectively), but the hormone levels did not correlate with spermatozoa levels. The testosterone and estradiol levels did not correlate with the levels of spermatogonia, pachytene spermatocytes, round spermatids, and elongated spermatids. The mechanical properties of the human supraspinatus tendon (SST) are highly heterogeneous and may reflect an important adaptive response to its complex, multiaxial loading environment. However, these functional properties are associated with a location-dependent structure and composition that have not been fully elucidated. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the concentrations of types I, II and III collagen in six distinct regions of the SST and compare changes in collagen concentration across regions with local changes in mechanical properties. We hypothesized that type I collagen content would be high throughout the tendon, type II collagen would be restricted to regions of compressive loading and type III collagen content would be high in regions associated with damage. We further hypothesized that regions of high type III collagen content would correspond to regions with low tensile modulus and a low degree of collagen alignment. Although type III collagen content was not significantly higher in regions that are frequently damaged, all other hypotheses were supported by our results. In particular, type II collagen content was highest near the insertion while type III collagen was inversely correlated with tendon modulus and collagen alignment. The measured increase in type II collagen under the coracoacromial arch provides evidence of adaptation to compressive loading in the SST. Moreover, the structure-function relationship between type III collagen content and tendon mechanics established in this study demonstrates a mechanism for altered mechanical properties in pathological tendons and provides a guideline for identifying therapeutic targets and pathology-specific biomarkers. Ischemia/hypoxia induces oxidative stress which is associated with neurodegenerative diseases. The present study investigated protective mechanism of carnosic acid (CA) on ischemia/reperfusion and hypoxia-induced neuronal cell injury. The results showed that CA reduced 52% of the infarct volume from brains under ischemia/reperfusion in vivo and protected the PC12 cells from hypoxic injury in vitro. CA (1.0 µM) enhanced cell viability, prevented lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) release, scavenged reactive oxygen species (ROS), increased superoxide dismutase activity, and attenuated Ca2+ release, lipid peroxidation, and prostaglandin E2 production in hypoxic PC12 cells. In addition, CA also reduced nitric oxide (NO) and interleukine (IL)-1 and IL-6 production from activated BV-2 microglia. Furthermore, its effect on hypoxia-induced mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) signaling pathway and caspase-3 was examined. Extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases, c-jun NH2-terminal kinase, and p38 MAPK were activated during hypoxia. CA inhibited MAPKs, caspase-3, and COX-2 activation and correlated well with the diminished LDH release and apoptosis (TUNEL) in PC12 cells under hypoxia. Taken together, CA protected neuronal cells under ischemia/hypoxia through scavenging or reducing of ROS and NO, inhibiting COX-2 and MAPK pathways by anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties. While tendons typically undergo primary tensile loading, the human supraspinatus tendon (SST) experiences substantial amounts of tension, compression, and shear in vivo. As a result, the functional roles of the extracellular matrix components, in particular the proteoglycans (PGs), are likely complex and important. The goal of this study was to determine the PG content in specific regions of the SST that exhibit differing mechanical function. The concentration of aggrecan, biglycan, and decorin was determined in six regions of the human SST using immunochemical techniques. We hypothesized that aggrecan concentrations would be highest in areas where the tendon likely experiences compression; biglycan levels would be highest in regions likely subjected to injury and/or active remodeling such as the anterior regions; decorin concentrations would be highest in regions of greatest tensile stiffness. Our results generally supported these hypotheses and demonstrated that aggrecan and biglycan share regional variability, with increased concentration in the anterior and posterior regions and smaller concentration in the medial regions. Decorin, however, was in high concentration throughout all regions. The data presented in this study represent the first regional measurements of PG in the SST. Together with our previous regional measurements of mechanical properties, these data can be used to evaluate SST structure-function relationships. With knowledge of the differences in specific PG content, their spatial variations in the SST, and their relationships to tendon mechanics, we can begin to associate defects in PG content with specific pathology, which may provide guidance for new therapeutic interventions. Housing speculation has been a major housing problem and hence a major concern of social movements in Taiwan since the mid-1980s. Although the government has implemented various schemes to slow down housing prices, past policies have not sought to change the fundamental structure of the housing system or its speculative tendencies. Since the late-1980s, a civil movement has been building up behind the issue of affordable rented housing, resisting the tendency towards intensified housing commodification that has served the interests of developers at the expense of the socially vulnerable. In late 2010, the Taiwanese social rented housing movement successfully pressed the passage of a policy supporting five social housing projects, as well as a luxury tax policy on housing. It has not, however, managed to change the more significant land tax system and the strong coalition between the state and private developers. There remain many struggles ahead in terms of reversing the trend toward privatisation and in advancing the cause of socialising housing. This paper assesses the struggle and recent successes of the Taiwanese housing movements in context of the speculative market booms that have characterised the housing sector for nearly three decades. In this study, we used a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest mixed design to assess the effect of association instruction on students' poetic creativity. Creativity was judged using the consensual assessment technique. A total of 64 fourth-grade students from two intact classes participated in the study. One class was assigned to the experimental group (n = 34) and the other to the control group (n = 30). Weekly for 5 weeks, the experimental group received 30 minutes of instruction in forming associations, and then each student composed a Chinese free verse based on a given association theme. The control group received traditional writing lectures prior to composing Chinese free verses. Three groups of judges assessed the completed poems (a total of 320 poems), evaluating their creativity on 14 dimensions. The judges included three expert teachers with at least 10 years of teaching experience in Chinese, three teachers who had won awards in nationwide Chinese writing contests, and three professors of children's literature; the overall inter-rater reliability was .85. The experimental group showed greater creativity compared to the control group in number association (d = 1.09), picture association (d = 0.62), and free association (d = 1.07). This article also discusses how to select judges, assessment criteria for children's poetic creativity, and techniques for association instruction to enhance children's poetic creativity. The purpose of this empirical study is to investigate the effects of relational bonds on online customer satisfaction using gender and time horizon as moderators. The findings are three-fold. First, the financial and structural bonds have positive impacts on online shoppers' satisfaction; however, the social bond does not. Second, the financial, social, and structural bonds have more positive impacts on female, than male, customer satisfaction. Third, the financial bond is more successful in strengthening customer satisfaction for short-term than for long-term customers; however, the structural bond is more important for long-term than for short-term customers.
