Background: Magnesium (Mg2+), an endogenous N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist, has received increased attention recently because of its role in the pathophysiology of and treatment response in depression. However, whether Mg2+ level is decreased in depression is not firmly established. We aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to help making consensus for the association between Mg2+ levels and depression. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in the electronic database resources PubMed and Embase. After a careful selection of relevant studies, a meta-analysis using the random effects model was conducted in each measuring source, such as serum, plasma, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Results: A total of 18 studies were included in this study. Among 11 studies that measured Mg2+ in the serum, Mg2+ level was lower in patients with depression than in controls (weighted mean difference  = −.088, 95% confidence interval  = −.164 to −.012). In the sensitivity analysis by removing studies one by one, 2 out of the 11 studies obliterated such significant differences. There were no significant differences in the Mg2+ levels in the studies for plasma and CSF. Conclusions: Despite some evidence supporting an association between decreased Mg2+ levels and depression from studies with serum, the results of our meta-analysis urge to use caution when associating Mg2+ levels and depression. Chronotypes are classified as morning, evening, or intermediate, but there are reports of a bimodal type. This study was undertaken to describe the characteristics of the bimodal chronotype and to explore relationships between the bimodal type and psychiatric disorders, fatigue, and quality of life. A total of 2389 subjects from a Korean national epidemiological survey of psychiatric disorders responded during face-to-face interviews. The Korean Composite International Diagnostic Interview was used to diagnose psychiatric disorders, and the Composite Scale of Morningness was used to assess chronotypes. Among intermediate-type subjects, those with a positive bimodal index were classified as bimodal type. In the present study, the proportions of bimodal, morning, intermediate, and evening types were 4.8%, 10.8%, 73.3%, and 11.1%, respectively. Distributions of sociodemographic variables were similar for the bimodal and intermediate types. After controlling for sociodemographic variables, any mood disorder and major depressive disorder were found to be significantly more associated with the bimodal type than the morning type, and dysthymic disorder was significantly more associated with the bimodal type than the intermediate type. For quality-of-life domains, moderate or extreme pain/discomfort was complained about more by subjects with the bimodal type than other types. In summary, the study shows chronotypes differ with respect to their relationships with mood disorder and quality of life. Before the bimodal type is classified as a clinically valid type, further investigations are needed to examine its psychological, physiological, and genetic characteristics. Objective: To assess the cost-effectiveness of vortioxetine versus venlafaxine XR (extended-release) in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients in South Korea.Methods: A 1-year cost-effectiveness analysis from a limited societal perspective was performed using a combined model consisting of a decision-tree and a Markov model. Patients entered the model when initiating or switching antidepressant treatment following inadequate response to previous treatment. Remission, relapse and recovery were the main health states.Results: Vortioxetine dominated venlafaxine XR, with quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gains of 0.0131 and cost savings of KRW 623,229/year [US$530/year] from a limited societal perspective. Safety contributed more than efficacy to the incremental QALY gains. More patients were in recovery after initial treatment and after 1 year with vortioxetine (31%, 40%) compared to venlafaxine XR (23%, 36%). Vortioxetine remained dominant in 98% of probabilistic simulations.Conclusion: Vortioxetine dominated venlafaxine XR in South Korea and is a relevant treatment option for MDD patients initiating or switching therapy. Conclusion. We conclude that increased expression level of the high mobility group I (HMGI(Y)) is closely associated with malignant transformation in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs), and the measurement of HMGI(Y) levels in HNSCCs may be useful as a prognostic marker. Objectives. To investigate whether HMGI overexpression is observed in HNSCCs, and its value as a prognostic marker in HNSCCs. Materials and methods. HMGI(Y) expression was determined at the protein level by immunohistochemisty using a HMGI(Y)-specific antibody and RT-PCR in 10 surgically resected specimens of non-neoplastic tissue (normal palatal tissue) and 40 HNSCCs. We also evaluated the association of HMGI(Y) overexpression within clinicopathologic parameters, i.e. clinical stage, pathologic grade, status of cervical lymph node metastasis, recurrence rate. Results. Expression of HMGI(Y) by immunohistochemical staining was observed in 35 of 40 (87.5%) HNSCC samples, whereas normal mucosa and/or the mucosa adjacent to the tumor tissue showed negative or weakly positive staining (p<0.05). Semi-quantification of HMGI(Y) by RT-PCR was 2.98±2.24 in cancer and 0.47±0.25 in normal tissue (p<0.001). High expression of HMGI(Y) was observed in recurrent cases, compared with non-recurrent cases (p<0.05). However, no significant correlation was observed between the levels of HMGI(Y) expression and other clinical factors such as clinical stage, pathologic grade, and status of cervical lymph node metastasis.
