With the gradual obsolescence of the lip-synched romantic duet, the sonic texture of Bengali popular cinema has transformed radically in the new millennium. One of the most remarkable components of the rise of the Original Soundtrack in Bengali film specifically has been the incorporation of local pop, folk, and rock bands, whose lyrics are written in Bengali but whose music retains a decidedly western flavour. This paper situates this relationship between cinema and what has traditionally been understood as ‘band’ music in Kolkata in a longer history of the city and its colonial and postcolonial musical cultures. With the incorporation of the pop/rock stars into the diegesis, the productive tensions between star and singer, visible and invisible bodies and voices have been overturned in recent years. Conversely, the music that is commissioned by these films now contribute to the bands’ larger discography and bring their music to a wider listening audience. In some of these films, musicians and bands appear as themselves, bringing together multi-modal sites of fandom and entertainment. We presented a 47-year old male diagnosed as a discal cyst with concurrent isthmic lumbar spondylolisthesis, which was not reported in the literature previously. A cystectomy with two-segmental transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion and instruments was performed. The association between concurrent discal cyst and isthmic spondylolisthesis may be illuminated by excessive strain and focal degeneration of the disc. The reception of George Crumb's Makrokosmos I and II benefited from the efforts of pianists David Burge and Robert Miller. Burge, the composer's colleague at Colorado College, gave the premiere of the first volume and made its first recording. The second volume was premiered by Robert Miller, a New York-based pianist associated with the Group for Contemporary Music, who created the initial recording of the second volume. The discographies of these two pianists testify to their tremendous and shared commitment to the music of their own time. Yet two artists drawn to the same repertoire, born in the same year, could not have been more different. There were significant differences in how they saw their goals, priorities, and responsibilities as interpreters dedicated to the evolving repertoire, which determined their immediate impact and the consequences of their work. Their choices, which reflect needs for access, self-preservation, education, standards, and audience engagement, are examined in light of contemporary debates regarding access and the bridging and bonding of diverse communities. The traditional work-instance model differentiates between the intellectual content of a work and the semantic content of its material instantiations. Most scholarship on musical works has concentrated on classical music within the Western canon, and little attention has been paid to other genres of music. This article explores what would constitute an effective work-instance model applicable to sound recordings of non-classical music, examines the shortcomings of the standard work-instance model, and offers new perspectives on the idea of the musical work by integrating the views of philosophers and musicologists, suggesting an interdisciplinary approach to the knowledge organization of musical works. In popular musicians' autobiographies, the paratext supplements the dialogue between subjects and readers with a second discourse parallel to the text proper. Introductions, forewords, and blurbs often interpellate readers directly, instructing them on how to contextualize and read the text that follows, while discographies and sessionographies complement more subjective narratives of career accomplishments. Photographs can reinforce the authenticity of a narrative, illustrate a subject's rise to notoriety, or aggrandize a performance persona. The literature reports that 39% of chronic lower back pain may be attributed to intervertebral disc derangement. However, definitive diagnosis of discogenic lower back pain (DLBP) remains challenging. Clinical examination may be normal and the correlative utility of magnetic resonance imaging findings such as the high intensity zone is controversial. Researchers have identified a complex interplay of degenerative, immunohistological, and biomechanical overload factors as causative. Due to difficulties in diagnosis through physical examination and imaging alone, provocative discography is still the gold standard for surgical planning, by measuring intradiscal pressure, finding extradiscal dye extravasation, and by reproducing concordant pain against controls. This remains so, despite the known sequelae of latent acceleration of disc degeneration following the procedure. Lumbar interbody fusion (LIF), in its various forms, is the traditional surgical management for intractable pain from DLBP. However, due to this surgery's known complications of progressive biomechanical overload and degeneration of adjacent non-fused segments, it is regarded as an end of the line management. Artificial disc implants may offer an improved biomechanical alternative to LIF, but its efficacy is uncertain; while new non-surgical managements, such as stem cell regeneration and gene therapy, show promise but require further investigation. This paper approaches music lyrics as a delivery system for the presentation of identity and reports the result of a content analysis of the work songs recorded by Johnny Cash. Beginning with a discography of 684 songs, the analysis found that 115 mention jobs, of which eighty concern work, and eight pertain to factory work. The study provides a detailed description of the factory work songs and categorizes them in terms of four themes: (1) going to work; (2) being at work; (3) after work, and (4) post-employment—after one no longer has a job. Cash's work songs illustrate that identity is a polysemic construction connected to work in various ways. A collaborative cataloging project for music sound recordings between two University of California campuses matches available staffing at UC San Diego with the need for better access to a high-priority collection of audio CDs at UC Santa Barbara, with promising results. This article discusses the decision to collaborate, the project planning process, cataloging standards and workflow issues, network level cataloging within an international database (OCLC), communication between personnel on the two campuses, managing cataloging review, an assessment of the project's achievements to date, and implications and future directions for similar cooperative projects. Historical collections of sound recordings are among the most hidden of library collections, with often little or no bibliographic access in local and union catalogs. In a joint project funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation, three large sound archives (later four) experimented with large-scale batch searching using OCLC Connexion's batch-processing utility to retrieve available copy for their holdings of 78 rpm recordings, while also providing high quality original cataloging for portions of their collections. Bee imagery is a common component in literary and theatrical productions. It has also been a prominent element in song titles and lyrics. This discographic study explores several bee themes featured in more than 200 commercial recordings released in the United States during the past century. Themes cited include references to scent, terms of endearment, analogies to bee-related structures and hive-oriented treasures, allusions to romance, sexuality, and reproduction, and fears of physical pain and emotional rejection. Background: Far lateral lumbar disc herniation (FLLDH) compresses the nerve root or dorsal ganglion outside the spinal canal at the same level as the herniation, producing severe pain on the anterolateral thigh. The pain is so severe that many patients cannot even walk. The severity of pain is attributed not only to compression, but also some chemical inflammation. Objective: To report a case of FLLDH whose nerve root was depicted during discography. Case report: A 55-year-old-man presented with severe pain from the left buttock to the left anterolateral thigh and leg. Abnormal shadowing suggested left FLLDH at the L5/S1 level on magnetic resonance imaging. During discography, a shadow suggestive of the left fifth lumbar nerve sheath was depicted. Comparing the computed tomography (CT) after discography and CT after rootgraphy, the root sheath-like shadow on discography was confirmed as the nerve root sheath. After nerve root block, pain decreased and the patient was discharged. Conclusions: The combination of mechanical compression and chemical inflammation by the herniated nucleus pulposus is considered responsible for severe pain in the disc herniation and also in FLLDH. Depiction of the nerve root during discography of FLLDH means that a connection exists between the herniated nucleus pulposus and affected nerve root sheath. Inflammation around the extruded nucleus pulposus penetrates the contacted nerve root sheath; this inflammation is thought to be one of the causes of severe pain in FLLDH. We recommend conservative therapies such as intradiscal or foraminal injection of local anesthetics with steroid for patients with radicular symptoms of FLLDH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Concatenative sound synthesis is a promising method of musical sound synthesis with a steady stream of work and publications for over five years now. This article offers a comparative survey and taxonomy of the many different approaches to concatenative synthesis throughout the history of electronic music, starting in the 1950s, even if they weren't known as such at their time, up to the recent surge of contemporary methods. Concatenative sound synthesis methods use a large database of source sounds, segmented into units , and a unit selection algorithm that finds the units that match best the sound or musical phrase to be synthesized, called the target . The selection is performed according to the descriptors of the units. These are characteristics extracted from the source sounds, e.g. pitch, or attributed to them, e.g. instrument class. The selected units are then transformed to fully match the target specification, and concatenated. However, if the database is sufficiently large, the probability is high that a matching unit will be found, so the need to apply transformations is reduced. The most urgent and interesting problems for further work on concatenative synthesis are listed concerning segmentation, descriptors, efficiency, legality, data mining and real time interaction. Background: Intradiscal steroid therapy can offer an additional therapeutic modality that may be beneficial for lumbar disc patients as an alternative to surgical intervention. Aims: Toevaluate the long-term efficacy of intradiscal steroid therapy and to identify factors that may enhance the long-term success of this procedure. Methods: A total of 85 consecutive patients were screened, who were treated in a oneyear period with intradiscal steroids for chronic low back pain and/or sciatica with normal neurological findings on examination. Patients considered as having clinical benefit from intradiscal steroid therapy and who did not experience a relapse of their complaints in the follow-up period were included for an assessment by questionnaire. An independent observer conducted a long-term follow-up assessment of the therapy by telephone interview. Results: Two months following intradiscal steroid therapy, 43 of the 85 patients reported an improvement. One year after intradiscal steroid therapy, continuing pain relief occurred in seventy-four percent of the successfully treated patients and it decreased to forty-four percent of the patients two years after treatment. Twenty-one per cent patients obtained a good long-term effect (2 years or more) from the intradiscal steroid injection. Female patients are expected to have a longer period of pain relief from intradiscal steroid therapy. No back pain and osteophyte formation present at level L4-L5 were significant predictors of a good long-term outcome. Conclusions: Intradiscal steroid therapy can be a useful alternative for patients with low back syndromes not responding to conventional therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of Gregorian chant in liturgical settings diminished sharply after the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) as a result of that Council's provisions for the use of languages other than Latin in worship. Since the mid-1990s, chant has been enjoying a modest revival. Today, choir directors are more inclined to include chant in their services than they had been in the recent past. However, many are unfamiliar with recently published collections of chant, including new editions from Solesmes requested by the Council itself, as well as collections for general use. This article reports on the 2004 Carol June Bradley Award for Historical Research in Music Librarianship given to C. Rockelle Strader. Strader's project is composed of a chronology and comparative description of cataloging codes and methods for sound recordings in the U.S. The impetus for this project began when Strader attempted to find historical materials about the cataloging of sound recordings for a class project. Strader holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from Kent State University. She is the electronic resources manager in the serials and electronic resources department of the Ohio State University Libraries.
