The extensive use of external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) using expanded polystyrene (EPS) for building insulation in Germany has resulted in accumulating end-of-life EPS-ETICS. To address limited waste management options and enhance EPS circularity, alternative recycling options like pyrolysis or solvent-based recycling need to be implemented. However, efficient recycling requires ex-ante analyses of the corresponding reverse logistics networks, including all necessary pre-treatment and transport processes. This study aims to develop a decision support system to determine optimal EPS-ETICS waste management by minimising the net present value of the corresponding network design. Our mixed-integer linear optimisation model considers decisions on technology, capacity, and location for pre-processing and recycling facilities as well as on material flow allocation. Applied to a German case study, our model finds pyrolysis and solvent-based recycling economically superior to current waste treatment in waste incineration plants. We present an optimal network design combining central pyrolysis with decentral pre-processing. A scenario analysis shows fluctuating styrene and polystyrene prices might favour solvent-based recycling over the optimal choice in pyrolysis, with minor overall cost differences. Further, legal recycling quotas of at least 40% would be necessary to promote solvent-based recycling and enhance EPS circularity beyond what is achievable through pyrolysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic led to restrictions in production worldwide. Numerous firms were affected and unable to keep up production due to lockdowns. In disruptive events like this, the resilience of the production system is of central importance, as the survivability of the entire firm depends on it. In this context, the literature argues that cutting-edge technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), raise the proactive and reactive capabilities of firms, enabling them to better resist and recover from disruptive events and thus, show a higher resilience. This paper takes up this topic and observes the Covid-19 pandemic with the aim to analyse whether a firm's AI-readiness had an impact on its production resilience during the spring 2020 lockdown in Germany. For this purpose, we combine two large-scale surveys containing data from 237 manufacturers in Germany and test hypotheses based on quantitative analyses. Our results show that firms could indeed benefit from AI-enabled production during the lockdown. However, it is also clear that manufacturers have to exceed a certain AI threshold to significantly increase their resilient capabilities and realise positive effects. Background: Psychological (meaning in life, science attitude, internal locus of control, religiosity), and social factors (social support, cohesion) can counteract stressor-related distress. We investigated these factors' links with peri-pandemic distress (depression, anxiety, intrusions) and whether they weakened the impact of being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We compared prior East and West Germans on predictors and distress to investigate if their different backgrounds created lasting differences. Methods: A population-representative German sample aged 45 to 70 (N = 380) in terms of age, sex, and school education completed online questionnaires in May–July 2020 and June–July 2021. We examined the predictive relations with correlation, forward inclusion regression, and moderation analyses. Results: Social support predicted lower distress, also prospectively. Meaning in life predicted lower distress cross-sectionally. Religiosity predicted greater distress. Life meaning and social support partly weakened the link between being affected by the pandemic and distress, religiosity and science attitude strengthened this link. The only significant East/West difference was in religiosity, which was higher in the West. Conclusion: Social resources appeared particularly important in adjusting to the pandemic. The identified predictors may inform interventions. East and West Germans' similarity might indicate that their post-war separation did not create lasting differences in the investigated factors. This article explores change possibilities towards status improvement in vocational education's social construction. Following other researchers, it assumes that higher-status vocational education should give vocational learners perspectives that would accord with their identities and desires, broadly ranging between working in a particular company and further studies. The article proposes that change in this direction must concern the transmitter-acquirer-knowledge-relation and also curriculum, evaluation and the external relations of education. To think systematically about changes of these 'adjusting screws', this article proposes a realist approach with Bernstein's conceptual language, and Moore's Bernstein-based model of education where vocational learners, plausibly, receive an orientation towards broad futures beyond narrow job roles. Moore's model implies fundamental changes of all these 'adjusting screws' and, importantly, of the principle underlying their realisation in schools. The case of company-based education in Germany's 'dual system' is advanced as a real-life example for the highly theoretical model. Findings from a Bernsteinian analysis of the transmitter-acquirer-relation in regulated company transmission made sense, when the system was understood as realising the principles envisioned in Moore's model. This paper explores the reasons why states occasionally do not adhere to the behavioural expectations as prescribed by their foreign policy master roles. To that end, it proposes four potential drivers for such 'role violations', namely: exogenous pressure, political survival, lack of issue salience and ensuing bureaucratic decision-making, and unclear role demands in ambiguous decision contexts. Empirically, the paper examines the plausibility of those drivers for the case of Germany's abstention in the United Nations Security Council vote on resolution 1973 on Libya. The local political arena is highly important for political engagement, as political issues that are relevant to citizens' daily lives are discussed at this level. Yet, empirical research on political communication at the local level in Germany is rather scarce, particularly with regards to analysis of how social media interacts and affects it. We do not know how active local political actors in Germany are in this communication sphere, nor do we know anything about potential driving forces of their activities on social media. Using different data sources, it can be demonstrated that political parties in Germany are using Facebook in varying degrees depending on their ideology, the urbanisation level of their home region and their membership structure. The results reveal that local groups within the German right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD) have a large lead on Facebook – in terms of both published posts and user responses. Germany has long been admired for its coordinated state-business relations, aligning domestic industry, particularly the automobile sector, with political and economic objectives. This article finds, however, that in the case of the automobile sector's transition to electric vehicles, there is little evidence of coordination. Informed by 31 interviews and a document analysis, the data shows instead that the Diesel Scandal proved to be a pivotal moment in German politics, as the state has looked to distance itself from the automobile industry. To reflect the data, I adjust Meckling and Nahm's analytical heuristic to argue that against the backdrop of e-mobility, auto-state-business relations have become un-coordinated. I subsequently contend that the consequences of un-coordination stand to have profound implications for Germany, as it cedes ground to Tesla and China in the global automobile market. As a result, a decline in the automobile industry threatens the export and fiscal surpluses exhibited in recent years and thus the German model. The study focuses on the framing of the COVID-19 pandemic in German parliamentary debates and media reports. It concentrates on the first three pandemic waves. The goal is not only to compare political and media framing, but also to show how frames changed from wave to wave. A content analysis of plenary protocols and articles from Welt Online and SZ Online has been carried out, coding single frame elements instead of complete frames, which are instead formed through cluster analyses. Results show that there are differences between government and opposition framing of the pandemic, with the opposition parties criticising the government's crisis management, while the governing parties justified their policies. Concerning the relationship between media and political framing, findings indicate that similar frames are used in both arenas. Nevertheless, differences in frequency are evident. The results show no evidence to support the assumption that frames of the governing parties are picked up more frequently by the media. Moreover, there are no signs of frame alignment between political actors and the media in the early stages of the pandemic nor of a diversification thereafter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brexit was potentially a highly divisive issue for the EU27 with states having different relationships with the UK. And yet in the period from the UK's referendum in 2016 until the exit of the UK in 2020, the EU27 maintained a remarkable degree of unity. This article examines relative EU27 unity in the face of the Brexit process. The article is based on interviews and other research on four selected EU member states: Germany, France, Poland and Ireland. The article considers four different factors drawn from the theoretical literature that might account for EU27 unity and then examines how they played out in each of the four states. We then compare across the cases and conclude that they all shaped national responses to Brexit, but that how they mattered and the patterns of effects were differentiated among the cases. The paper analyses party positions on gender equality policies in Germany. While these policies have been intensively studied in various national contexts and for different parties, less is known to what extent these positions are explained by socio-cultural or socio-economic cleavages. Based on an original party expert survey, conducted in Germany in 2021, we demonstrate that the political space in Germany on gender equality policies is strongly structured along the GAL-TAN divide. We also show that the positions of moderate TAN parties differ most strongly regarding LGBTQI issues whilst GAL parties equally support women -related and LGBTQI-related issues. The Green party and the right-wing party AfD occupy the most consistent and salient but also outermost positions in the political space. Our study makes a substantial contribution to the analysis of gender equality policies and offers a systematic analysis of party positions in the realm of the cultural GAL-TAN cleavage. Germany traditionally supports multilateral economic rules and European integration, but also pursues nation-centred policies in key economic policy areas. In the last decade, German governments prioritised national goals over multilateral governance, for instance, by opposing the regulation of export surpluses to reduce global imbalances, by deciding to phase-out nuclear energy without embedding this course in a multilateral European agreement, and by imposing austerity rules in the Eurozone crisis instead of enabling an integrative balancing of member states' positions. Why did German governments engage in nation-centred economic policies that privilege national concerns over multilateral rules and European compromise in the 2010s? I argue that these policies correlate with domestic alignments between material interests of lobby groups and ideational expectations of voters as well as with governmental and media framings. The paper employs the societal approach to governmental preference formation in analysing the domestic politics of nation-centred policies regarding global imbalances and trade surplus, unilateral energy transition, and the imposition of austerity and debt brake in the Eurozone crisis. Recent evidence suggests that in many European countries generally positive views about societal diversity predominate. Yet, as research has rather focussed on negative attitudes towards immigration and diversity, less is known about positive attitudes and those who hold them. The paper makes a conceptual and an empirical contribution to filling this gap. We introduce a multidimensional concept, "diversity assent", to capture both evaluations of diversity and attitudes towards reflecting diversity in societal institutions. We test the concept using the case of urban Germany, drawing from a large, purpose-built survey. We demonstrate that, while assent differs for the two dimensions, a sizeable majority of those who evaluate diversity positively also agree with representing diversity in official policy and institutions, with some differences along socio-political lines. Background: The advent of biologics and janus kinase inhibitors has revolutionized treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). Objective: To investigate preferences of patients with AD for attributes of currently approved systemic treatments and assess influencing factors. Methods: An online discrete choice experiment was conducted in patients with AD throughout Germany to analyze preferences for outcome (probability of (almost) clear skin at week 16, probability of significant itch improvement, time to onset of itch relief and type of side effects) and process attributes (application method and frequency of laboratory tests). Results: Participants (n=182, 75.3% female) considered side effects (Relative Importance Score (RIS): 31.2), (almost) clear skin (RIS: 24.2) and probability of itch improvement (RIS: 16.0) most important. Application method (RIS: 14.4), time to onset of itch relief (RIS: 7.4) and frequency of laboratory tests (RIS: 6.8) were less relevant. Preferences were significantly influenced by sex, age, psychiatric comorbidity, current therapy and health-related quality of life according to multivariate regression analysis. Conclusions: Participants attached great importance to safety and symptom control. However, preferences were also dependent on individual characteristics, underscoring the importance of personal counseling. Background: Hereditary angioedema with normal C1-inhibitor (HAE-nC1-INH) is a rare genetic disease. The symptoms can resemble other forms of hereditary angioedema (HAE), but the specific laboratory values are inconspicuous. The knowledge about treatment strategies in HAE-nC1-INH remains insufficient; most of the drugs are only licensed and approved for other types of HAE. Methods: An analysis of all patients with HAE-nC1-INH was carried out in a certified angioedema treatment center in southern Germany. Only patients with a confirmed HAE-nC1-INH mutation were included. The impact of disease was monitored with validated questionnaires. Results: Eighteen patients were included: two families with a factor XII mutation and seven families with a plasminogen mutation. All individuals received icatibant for on-demand therapy—efficient treatment response was reported. Three patients were severely affected, and prophylaxis was initiated with lanadelumab. According to the questionnaires, the clinical course and symptoms improved significantly under this prophylactic regime. Conclusion: This is one of the first descriptions of the clinical outcomes as a response to prophylactic treatment with lanadelumab in HAE-nC1-INH patients with a known mutation. The therapeutic management of HAE-1 and HAE-2 should also be the basis of HAE-nC1-INH, including prophylaxis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes the epoch-making trial against the German Communist Party (KPD) in 1954–56 – a process with unmistakable political, ideological, and political-theoretical aspects. Both the government and the party's representatives used metaphorical arguments to publicly state their case for or against the eventual party ban. Citing classics of Marxism-Leninism for evidence, the government blamed the KPD for planning a violent revolution and described its activities metaphorically in military terms. The party retorted by ridiculing the government for reading metaphors literally and, more methodologically, rejected the government's non-contextual approach as ‘Talmudism' and ‘hodgepodge', while simultaneously promoting the Leninist doctrine of tactical ‘elasticity' to secure their own argumentative leeway. The government depicted communism as an infection to be removed by amputation – a metaphor the KPD reappropriated and used to present itself as integral to West-German democracy and the guarantor of German unification. Rather than being superficial rhetoric, these interlinked metaphorical arguments captured the gist of the ideological disagreement. The metaphors can be understood properly only by reading them together and considering the underlying argumentative functions that are identifiable by analyzing the explicit proposition each side put forth. This article explores the international reception of Spanish Informalism during the years of aperturismo, when this artistic trend was chosen to represent the Franco dictatorship at international art exhibitions and biennials. In contrast to the readings that study this phenomenon as a strategy of cultural diplomacy, the aim here is to pay attention to the local contexts where the Informalist avant-garde was exhibited, in order to analyse the ways in which the work of Spanish artists was re-signified when it came into contact with geographically situated curators, critics and audiences who had their own agency. Taking the example of the Federal Republic of Germany as a case study, this article examines a series of exhibitions that arose from private initiative in 1960, basing mostly on periodical and primary sources from the archives of the institutions that hosted the exhibitions. When news stories cover health and diseases, they often address issues of responsibility. These responsibility frames can affect recipients' responsibility beliefs (i.e., attributions) and thereby affect emotions and motivations to support people affected by health problems. To date, it is not fully understood how responsibility frames affect these attributions, emotions, and social support intentions in the context of dementia. In an online experiment with N = 1,059 German participants, we tested the effects of different responsibility frames (individual vs. contextual) on social support intentions through responsibility attributions and emotional reactions in the context of dementia. Results show that responsibility frames affect responsibility attributions and social support intentions. Mediation analysis shows that the effect of contextual responsibility frames on social support intention is partially mediated by responsibility attribution and emotions (sympathy and anger). How do media discourses on German national identity differ before and after the arrival of refugees in 2015/16? National identity discourses are often closely linked to immigration dynamics, inter alia due to boundary making through the othering of immigrants. While this relation is well documented in the case of Germany, scholars have yet to study how the arrival of refugees in 2015/16 has been integrated in discourses on national identity in more detail. In this paper, we conduct an inductive qualitative content analysis of Die ZEIT, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Bild am Sonntag in 2014 and 2019 and find an important shift within the media representation of German national identity. While in 2014, a self-understanding of Germany as an immigration country dominated the media landscape, by 2019, national identity discourses became more fragmented and neither the idea of a tolerant Germany nor the idea of an anti-immigration Germany clearly dominated. We ask how human behavior changes when racial discrimination is costly and when choices are risky. By asking N = 4,944 participants in Germany to form a soccer team in a series of online experiments, we measure decision-making in an accessible way. Higher costs of discrimination can reduce disparities, but we show that these costs can also trigger implicit racial bias: participants who received an additional financial incentive to select more skilled soccer players outperformed nonincentivized participants and differentiated less based on skin color. However, when confronted with risky choices in a lottery, incentivized participants are more likely to gamble to avoid players with a darker skin color. That is, racial (minority) markers alter the risk preferences of people when their decisions carry costly consequences. This implicit racial bias may partly explain why members of visible minority groups are regularly discriminated against in real-world competitive markets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The introduction to the theme issue on the Politics of Voluntariness in Modern History starts by discussing the origins and uses of the liberal discourse on voluntariness in the seventeenth century. It was during this period that philosophers and politicians began to present voluntariness as specific to liberalism. By the same token, voluntariness and authoritarian rule have been declared incompatible. This introduction and the papers in the theme issue critically discuss the exclusive linkage of voluntariness and liberalism – an interpretation that fails to capture authoritarian governing in its entirety, while ignoring compulsory and exclusionary practices in liberal societies. This theme issue shows voluntariness to be essential to policies and political practices in both liberal and illiberal societies. Political practices are at the core of our articles: amid a web of actors, institutions, discourses, and expectations, the individual means and capacity to act voluntarily, make choices, and overcome constraints are historically and socially variable. The introduction and the theme issue explore this variability to illuminate how voluntariness operates as a driving force for political practices in liberal and illiberal societies, drawing on case studies from German, Swiss, and U.S.-American history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The European Parliament (EP), often seen as relatively women-friendly, still struggles with underrepresentation of women in leadership roles, such as committee chairs This article scrutinizes individual career factors leading German Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to Strasbourg and into leadership positions within the EP. It focuses on examining disparities between men and women and compares women with, and without, leadership experience in the various parliamentary offices. The study explores how individual qualifications, such as political experience and education, alongside personal factors like marital status and parental responsibilities, correlate with women's leadership roles in the EP. Using a dataset of all German MEPs from 1999 to 2019, the analysis finds higher representation of women in leadership roles than their overall presence in the EP, though disparities exist across office types and political affiliations. The findings reveal two main challenges for German women in the EP: a motherhood penalty and barriers to leadership. On average, women MEPs have fewer children than their male counterparts, and those in leadership are more likely to be unmarried. This essay relates the resurgence of contemporary far-right1 politics to a distinctive querpolitics (a transverse or diagonal politics) of socially, politically, and ideologically heterogeneous assembly. This calls for a reconceptualization of the global far right beyond homogeneous understandings of ideological beliefs. Instead of ideologically aligned fellow travelers bound together by their common consent to a system of thick beliefs, far-right political formations are located within messy and fissured socio-political fields. They assemble a varied and contradictory collection of individual, transactional actors with divergent interests. Moreover, the far right is often embedded in mainstream circuits of political and social life that are distinct from and often even opposed to overtly extremist positions. I elaborate on these points through a discussion of far-right politics in Germany and India. Objective: This study examined the state of mental health, partnerships, and sexual activity of German university students after the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants and methods: In June and July 2021, 928 students (23.6 years; 63.5% female) from four universities in Germany participated in an online survey that assessed depressive and anxiety symptoms as well as data on partnerships and sexuality. Results: Of the students, 56.4% were above the cutoff for clinically relevant depressive symptoms and 35.7% were above the cutoff for clinically relevant anxiety symptoms. Female gender, higher academic-related stress, lower financial resources, higher strain due to COVID-19, and more loneliness were associated with more severe symptoms. A quarter of the students each reported an improvement or deterioration in their partnerships. Conclusions: Student mental health appears to be worse compared to pre-pandemic and first wave data. Purpose: Mobility impairments are a common consequence of stroke and spinal cord injury (SCI). Assistive products (APs) such as wheelchairs are often needed for activities and participation. The aim of the study was to explore the provision and use of APs in Germany and to identify associated factors underlying this practice. Materials and methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 professionals from outpatient neurorehabilitation services (three general practitioners, five physical therapists, five occupational therapists, one speech therapist, one neuropsychologist, two outpatient nurses, one rehab technician and one social worker), two patient advocates (long-term survivors, each stroke and SCI) and 20 patients (10 each after stroke and SCI with mobility impairment, and first-ever affected). Analysis was performed by qualitative content analysis. Results: Reported experiences were mixed, varying from high satisfaction to unusable APs and unmet needs. Identified factors associated with these experiences were related to care pathways, care coordination, inter-professional collaboration, professionals' knowledge and patient information, cost coverage, and approval procedures. Conclusion: Overall, patients seem satisfied with the APs they receive, but patients with more severe mobility impairments in particular experience deficits in the provision and use of APs. Further research is needed to develop and test strategies for the provision and use of APs. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: Interprofessional collaboration between the multiple stakeholders and the involvement of end users is needed to realise the full potential of specific assistive products (APs). A care pathway should be implemented for the provision of appropriate APs. Professionals' expertise in both APs and end user empowerment needs to be improved. Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) will greatly impact the lives of individuals with visual impairments, but how they differ in expectations compared to sighted individuals is not clear. The present research reports results based on survey responses from 114 visually impaired participants and 117 panel recruited participants without visual impairments, from Germany. Their attitudes towards autonomous vehicles and their expectations for consequences of wide-spread adoption of CAVs are assessed. Results indicate significantly more positive CAV attitudes in participants with visual impairments compared to those without visual impairments. Mediation analyses indicate that visually impaired individuals' more positive CAV attitudes (compared to sighted individuals') are largely explained by higher hopes for independence, and more optimistic expectations regarding safety and sustainability. Policy makers should ensure accessibility without sacrificing goals for higher safety and lower ecological impact to make CAVs an acceptable inclusive mobility solution. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: Autonomous vehicles can significantly enhance the independence of individuals with visual impairments by providing a reliable and convenient mode of transportation. Autonomous vehicles could offer advanced wayfinding capabilities, including indoor navigation in complex environments, which can be particularly beneficial for people with visual impairments. Comprehensive training programs should be available to help individuals with visual impairments become familiar with autonomous vehicle technology, ensuring they can use it effectively and confidently. Regular feedback from individuals with visual impairments should be sought during the design and development phases to ensure that their specific needs and preferences are taken into account. False memories during testimony are an enormous challenge for criminal trials. Exposure to post-event misinformation can lead to inadvertent creation of false memories, known as the misinformation effect. We investigated anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the left inferior parietal lobe (IPL) during recall testing to enhance accurate recall while addressing the misinformation effect. Participants (N = 60) watched a television series depicting a fictional terrorist attack, then received an audio recording with misinformation, consistent information, and control information. During cued recall testing, participants received anodal or sham tDCS. Results revealed a robust misinformation effect in both groups, with participants falsely recalling on average 26.6% of the misinformed items. Bayesian statistics indicated substantial evidence in favour of the null hypothesis that there was no difference between groups in the misinformation effect. Regarding correct recall however, the anodal group exhibited significantly improved recall for items from the original video. Together, these results demonstrate that anodal tDCS of the left IPL enhances correct recall of the episodes from the original event without affecting false recall of misinformation. Purpose: To explore return-to-work (RTW) policies and practices for total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients in three European countries. Materials and methods: An exploratory study in Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands consisting of three aspects: (1) description of the healthcare and social security systems; (2) identification of national RTW guidelines; (3) a survey to gain insight into RTW practices and perceptions of orthopaedic surgeons, including barriers, facilitators, and needs. Results: Healthcare and social security systems differed (e.g. fast-track vs longer postoperative stay; coverage of rehabilitation costs). National guidelines were available in Germany (THA, TKA) and the Netherlands (TKA), containing limited RTW information. The survey was completed by 168 orthopaedic surgeons (Denmark n = 51; Germany n = 39; the Netherlands n = 78). Overall, orthopaedic surgeons reported being in need of more knowledge and better collaboration with other healthcare practitioners. Conclusion: We found considerable variation in healthcare and social security systems. When available, national guidelines contained limited information. In all three countries surgeons need more knowledge and better collaboration with other healthcare practitioners. We advise that RTW multidisciplinary recommendations post THA/TKA be established by the national associations of the healthcare practitioners involved. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: Orthopaedic surgeons (regardless of country) need more knowledge, including "guidelines", "scientific evidence", and "expertise with work/return-to-work", to adequately support return to work. Orthopaedic surgeons need better collaboration with other healthcare practitioners to adequately support total hip arthroplasty or total knee arthroplasty patients to return to work. This paper reports findings from an exploratory study on multilingual speakers conducted in Germany. Data were collected using a questionnaire instrument launched in 2021. To our knowledge, this is the first enquiry into multilinguals' own perception of their spoken languages in Germany. The core research questions addressed in this paper are (1) whether some languages are perceived as more valuable or prestigious than others by their speakers and (2) whether speakers of certain languages experience discrimination more often than speakers of other languages. In the data exploration it was assumed that (a) all languages other than English, French, Italian, and Spanish (besides Latin the standard foreign languages in schools) will be valued 'lower'; and (b) speakers will report experiences of discrimination with respect to their use of those languages other than German or the foreign languages mentioned above. The results indeed demonstrate differences in the perceived value and prestige of certain languages. Multivariate statistical analyses indicate that L1 speakers of languages with perceived lower value (e.g. Turkish) experience discrimination significantly more often than L1 speakers of other home languages (e.g. English). Sociolinguistics has seen an emergence of new theoretical perspectives that somehow cater for the, according to Li, 'complex linguistic realities of the twenty-first century' (2017, p.14). Thus 'overwriting' conventional ways of understanding language/language use and its relation to identity construction. Taking these changes as a starting point, this paper expands research into complex identity construction of students attending a complementary language school and investigation of linguistic repertoires of German language learners through language portrait work. The motivation for the research presented in this paper is to explore the relationship between linguistic repertoires and complex identities of young people attending a complementary language school in a multilingual city. It suggests an organic approach to investigating the relationship between young people as social beings, that are more than 'just' language learners per se, and the ways they use organic linguistic repertoires (OLRs) to construct their complex linguistic identities. The findings presented in this paper highlight the complexities of young people's identities in relation to their OLR. The term OLR points towards the dynamic nature of 'languages'. Although these terms point toward a dynamic understanding of language and identity the term OLR seems to foreground the changing nature of these, pointing toward their 'aliveness'. This article analyzes how a preexisting far-right social movement organization responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the case of the Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the Occident (PEGIDA) in Germany. We show that PEGIDA quickly adapted its previous immigration-related collective action frame, now predominantly portraying itself as a defender of democracy, constitutionality, and civil rights, while accusing the German government of installing a 'Corona dictatorship'. In addition to improving our understanding of the development of a key far-right social movement organization during the pandemic, our article contributes to the study of far-right ideology more broadly. Examining a critical case of far-right activism, our analysis of PEGIDA underscores the need to review the conventional scholarly distinction between radical and extreme right ideology based on formal pro- and anti-democracy stances. While claiming to espouse the idea of democracy, activists sharply attacked democratic institutions and their main representatives as 'totalitarian' or 'dictatorial' – a key extremist feature of contemporary far-right discourse particularly visible during the pandemic. Indeed, PEGIDA's discursive shift during the pandemic seems to be in line with broader developments of far-right ideology in the protest arena and in party politics, where formal support of democracy goes together with a rhetoric of delegitimization of contemporary democratic institutions and their representatives. Methodologically, we draw from original empirical data collected with the tools of (virtual) ethnography and protest event analysis that we analyze through a frame-analytical lens. Purpose: A scoping review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of parenting and family-based interventions that aim to reduce severe and persistent conduct problems among 10–17 year-olds. The review also examined feasibility for conducting a network meta-analysis of common therapy elements measured by RCTs. Materials and methods: The review adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA- ScR). Searches were conducted in ERIC, PsycINFO, and MEDLINE without limits on publication year, language or publication country. Study methodological quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist for RCTs. Results: Twenty-five eligible RCTs were identified. The studies trialed nine interventions, with Multisystemic Therapy (MST) being the most evaluated (N = 10), followed by Functional Family Therapy (FFT, N = 4), and Treatment Foster Care Oregon (TFCO, N = 3). Only 10 of the 25 RCTs revealed treatment effect on conduct problems, including 6 of 9 MST, 1 of 4 FFT and all 3 TFCO trials. Discussion: Surprisingly few RCTs of parenting and family-based interventions have been carried out exclusively with this population. Available data suggests that MST and FFT have uncertain effectiveness for reducing severe and persistent conduct problems. While the quality of the reviewed studies was generally high, only two reported substantive data on common therapy elements. Conclusion: There is need for more RCTs of parenting and family-based interventions delivered for older children and adolescents with severe and persistent conduct problems. In the present study, we combined the Focus on Multilingualism approach with the human capital theory to investigate multilingual profiles among first-generation adult immigrants in Germany and the relationship between immigrants' multiliteracy and their employment status. We used data representative for Germany on the self-reported literacy skills in the majority, heritage, and foreign languages of first-generation immigrants (n = 451, age 18–64) gathered in the LEO 2018 study. To analyze multilingual literacy skills, we estimated adults' multilingual profiles using LCA. In a second step, we conducted logistic regression models with multiliteracy and employment status. We found two multilingual profiles of first-generation immigrants: a profile with higher and a profile with lower literacy skills in all investigated languages. The profiles differed by the level of adults' literacy skills in all investigated languages and showed a unique non-overlapping language ordering pattern. The results gained from the logistic regressions revealed that multiliteracy in first-generation immigrants may represent human capital in Germany. After controlling for additional variables (age, gender, education), the analysis showed that higher multiliteracy increases the probability of adult immigrants' employment. Shortages of women in rural areas occur in many highly urbanized countries. Rural East Germany is an ideal case for studying this phenomenon because of its low adult sex ratio (ASR)—men greatly outnumber women—coupled with high outmigration among young adults. This study identifies how internal migration between rural and urban areas contributes to the shortage of young adult women. We use data on inter-county migration flows (for years 2002–21) to decompose the impacts of migration flows on ASRs. We find that the low ASRs in rural East Germany have been driven by sex-selective migration. In the early 2000s the main destination of sex-selective outflows was West Germany, while in the 2010s urban areas in East Germany were the key destinations. We find that moves among 18–24-year-olds increased the shortage of women in the rural population, whereas moves among 25–29-year-olds contributed to more balanced ASRs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research examined how migrant care workers in eldercare institutions in Germany were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on their personal experiences. The research is theoretically grounded in intersectionality and the prisoner of love framework. Drawing on 15 qualitative interviews with migrant care workers (MCWs) from Poland and Bosnia–Herzegovina, the main findings highlight that intersecting social positions play an important role in stratifying experiences for MCWs. Migrant workers with high skill levels and job security stressed similarities to their non-migrant colleagues in their day-to-day work experiences during the pandemic, foregrounding their shared professional self-image and creating solidarity between workers of all backgrounds. Strong workplace relationships, emphasising their professional identity, and adapting career plans were ways to mitigate the negative effects of the pandemic. Objectives: Prescriptive views of aging (PVoA) are normative age-based expectations about age-appropriate behavior for older adults, e.g. that they should stay fit/active (active aging norms) but also behave altruistically toward younger generations (altruistic disengagement norms). We aimed at examining age differences in endorsement of active aging and altruistic disengagement and investigated predictors of endorsement. Method: In the AGEISM Germany survey, a representative sample of N = 1,915 German participants was recruited, covering a wide age range (Mage=56.57 years, 16-96 years). Cross-sectional data was collected via computer-assisted telephone interviews. Results: Active aging was more strongly endorsed than altruistic disengagement. Endorsement of both PVoA was higher in older age groups – even more pronounced for altruistic disengagement. Endorsement of both norms was positively associated with positive age stereotypes. Furthermore, active aging was predicted by age centrality whereas altruistic disengagement was predicted by negative age stereotypes. Age was still a robust predictor of PVoA even after entering additional predictors. Conclusion: Although associated, prescriptive age norms (i.e. beliefs how older people should behave) and descriptive age norms (i.e. beliefs about how older adults and the aging process are like) represent partly independent belief systems, highlighting the importance to assess & further investigate predictors and consequences of PVoA, which become more prevalent with age. Does higher medical spending improve quality of care? We estimate the effect of changes in regulated reimbursement prices for hospitals on multiple dimensions of hospital quality, including mortality outcomes, surgical complications, process quality and patient satisfaction. We exploit an exogenous variation in reimbursement prices between the years 2006 and 2010 based on a reform of hospital financing in Germany. We find that changes in reimbursement prices do not affect quality of care. Between 1949 and 1980, voluntariness became a key element in West Germany’s post-fascist migration regime, intended to ethically frame the forced deportations of migrants. Voluntariness appeared in German migration legislation as a euphemistic term for forced removals. Politicians and lawyers emphasized the need to offer voluntary repatriation to those facing inevitable deportation. To avoid any association with Nazi deportations, both liberals and ‘former’ Nazis involved in Germany’s migration policy underscored the notion of voluntariness in what were essentially forced deportations. The paradigm of voluntariness in repatriation management was influenced by a specific German need to denazify deportations and migration practices, as well as by a global shift towards voluntariness associated with liberalization, decolonization, development, Cold War rivalries and the rise of liberal internationalism. Global practices and discourses of return migration both emerged from and helped shape this paradigm of voluntariness, as the liberalizing world sought to distance itself from its fascist legacy and align with emancipatory and progressive ideals, despite the ongoing deportation of migrants from the Global South. I argue that West Germany played a significant role in shaping and globalizing the concept of voluntary repatriation within this historical context, transforming it from a paradigm into a dispositive. This article aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the relationship between perceived discrimination and the sense of belonging among 354 Turkish adolescents in Germany and France. The research employs a cross-country comparative methodology. Firstly, it seeks to identify both the commonalities and disparities in the perceptions of discrimination and the sense of belonging to school among Turkish adolescents across diverse societies while considering demographic variables. Subsequently, it explores whether the perceived discrimination experienced by Turkish youth is related to their sense of belonging. I use a forward and backward predictor selection to study the efficiency of growth forecasts for Germany published by three German economic research institutes during the sample period 1970–2018. The two predictor selection techniques make it straightforward to study forecast efficiency even when the number of predictor variables that a researcher uses to proxy the information set of a forecaster is large. Poland, still considered by some to be a bastion of Catholicism in Europe, is becoming more secularised every year, and its society resembles the postmodern societies of Western Europe. The changes in religiousness, which affect especially the younger Poles, are so strong that they call into question the validity of the current form of religious education, i.e. school catechesis, which is proving incapable of fulfilling its tasks, e.g. in the function of Christian initiation. Given the above context, the present article has a threefold purpose: The first step is to present the social and educational challenges of school catechesis in Polish schools. Based on these premises, the second step will outline the main similarities and differences in religious education between Poland and Germany, and then the German ‘Carousel of Concepts’ (H. Mendl) of the 1960s, which contributed to the emergence of a possible optimal model of religious education for a postmodern society. In the third and final step, ideas for the future will be formulated for the renewal of religious education in Poland, making it possible to characterise it in a guiding way as a dialogical-educational concept. Knowledge about urban sustainability policies seems highly relevant regarding the ability to govern sustainable development actively. Based on this assumption, this paper reports on a new dataset in which the sustainability policies of 189 German cities are collected and aggregated into an index measuring the city’s overall sustainability commitment in 2021. This is the first attempt to collect the sustainability policies of a high number of German cities based on a multidimensional understanding of sustainability and from a policy-analytical perspective using the concept of policy density. The analysis shows that 80% of the cities are engaged with sustainability but to a significantly varying degree: ‘Beginner’ cities with a low index value do not only use less binding or symbolic policies and not all ‘leading’ cities have formulated overarching strategies. These findings fit the assumption that dichotomous operationalization of sustainability commitment, which is mainly found in the literature, might fall short of capturing the actual extent of cities’ sustainability efforts, while the developed index allows for a more differentiated operationalization. The index can be used for future analyses aimed at examining the impact of policies on sustainable development or investigating why some cities actively commit to sustainability, and others do not. This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of resistance exercise on muscle architecture and tissue organization at rest and during isometric maximum voluntary contraction (iMVC) of the gastrocnemius medialis muscle. In 16 healthy adults (25 ± 3 y), ultrasound scans were captured before (pre), immediately after (post), and 15 min after (post_15) single-leg calf raises during rest and iMVCs. Measurements included muscle thickness (MT), pennation angle (PA), and fascicle length (FL). Spatial frequency analysis (SFA) assessed tissue organization (e.g. peak spatial frequency radius (PSFR), quality factor (Q6)). MT increased significantly from pre to post (+5.7%) and post_15 (+5.6%) at rest. During iMVC, MT and FL increased significantly from pre to post (MT: +8.1%, FL: +14.9%) and post_15 (MT: +5.2%, FL: +10.5%), while PA decreased significantly from pre to post_15 (−10.2%). PSFR and Q6 decreased significantly from pre to post (−7.0-8.2%) and increased from post to post_15 (+10.3-10.6%) at rest, with no significant changes during iMVC. Resistance exercise led to altered muscle architecture for more than 15 min, while SFA parameters reverted to baseline within 15 min. The literature argues that linguistic enclaves negatively affect immigrants' language proficiency by reducing their exposure and incentives to learn destination language. This negative association may, however, be spurious, arising due to the self-selection of immigrants into regions with larger enclaves. Exploiting the natural experiment of the German residential policy, this paper analyses the influence of linguistic enclaves on refugees' language proficiency. We find no evidence that enclaves hamper German language learning among refugees. Our results are robust to various measurements and model specifications. Although the 2015 "refugee crisis" dominated Europe's policy-making agenda, little research was actually conducted with refugees. Using focus groups, interviews and photovoice, this study explores the identity and integration processes of 20 refugees, in two German towns, in 2017. While previous scholarship has rightly emphasized the importance of secure legal status for integration, this study highlights the critical role of community support by national citizens in fostering a greater sense of belonging and integration. Older adults tend to exhibit longer response times than younger adults in choice tasks across cognitive domains, such as perception, attention, and memory. The diffusion model has emerged as a standard model for analyzing age differences in choice behavior. Applications of the diffusion model to choice data from younger and older adults indicate that age-related slowing is driven by a more cautious response style and slower non-decisional processes, rather than by age differences in the rate of information accumulation. The Lévy flight model, a new evidence accumulation model that extends the diffusion model, was recently developed to account for differences in response times for correct and error responses. In the Lévy flight model, larger jumps in evidence accumulation can be accommodated compared to the diffusion model. It is currently unknown whether younger and older adults differ with respect to the jumpiness of evidence accumulation. In the current study, younger and older adults (N = 40 per age group) completed a letter-number-discrimination task. Results indicate that older adults show a more gradual (less "jumpy") pattern of evidence accumulation compared to younger adults. Implications for research on cognitive aging are discussed. America's potential strategic disengagement from Europe is leading key European powers – in particular, France, the United Kingdom and Germany – to reconsider the role of nuclear weapons in European security in the absence of extended US nuclear deterrence. Here leading French, British and German analysts offer anticipatory assessments of their countries' national perceptions, policies and preferences with respect to formulating a common European approach. They discuss, respectively, France's tentative overture to its European allies, Britain's willingness against broad constraints, and the tension between Germany's entrenched caution and its rising threat perceptions. While there are options that could produce a viable European nuclear deterrent, they would require a degree of national flexibility and European financial support that is currently difficult to imagine. Europe's successful embrace of its geopolitical potential in a multipolar world will require both greater cohesion and an enhanced ability to act globally. Europe's three major powers – France, Germany and the United Kingdom – have managed to either stave off or recover from right-wing populism, and have dealt competently with the Russia–Ukraine war. But they are currently too riven by internal politics or historical prejudices to take the lead in Europe. Relief from domestic political dysfunction may therefore rest with the European Union itself. Under Ursula von der Leyen's authoritative leadership, the European Commission has become the most decisive and capable political actor in Europe. This was demonstrated by its imaginative response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and through its comprehensive Russian sanctions regime in 2022. However, only another crisis – such as a second Donald Trump presidential term – is likely to generate the momentum for the commission to re-emerge as the engine for further European integration.
