As both a vibrant industry and necessity for people's lives, housing has attracted much attention in recent years. This article examines the efficacy of both loosening and tightening policies on mortgage lending in different priced housing markets in Shanghai, China, from 2014 to 2018 using daily average sale prices across 1,824 neighborhoods, with price-classified cluster analysis and policy-informed hedonic regressions. The results show that (1) the effects of mortgage lending policy interventions varied significantly and the overall spatial distribution gravitated toward subway networks and varied throughout the years; (2) the effects of interventions were time lagged but varied by different priced neighborhoods; and (3) although the accumulated number of both loosening and tightening policies were both significant, only the effects of tightening policies were significant overall. This article contributes to the existing literature by combining the spatial-temporal component in policy studies, providing detailed mortgage lending policy intervention variables, and expanding the scope of study from housing prices to housing transaction frequencies. In this paper, we look at differences in travel behavior and location characteristics across income in Chengdu, China at two points of time, 2005 and 2016, using household travel surveys. Specifically, we compare changes over time for different income groups for Chengdu in 2005 and 2016. We find that walking or biking remains the most common mode for all income groups but higher-income households appear to have more choices depending on the proximity of their neighborhood to downtown. We also find that both average local and average regional access have worsened since 2005. Furthermore, it appears that there is less economic diversity within neighborhoods in 2016 when compared to 2005, with more locations appearing to have 40% or more of low-, middle-, or high-income households than in the past. Finally, we find that low-income households and older trip makers are more likely to walk or bike and that high-income households are the most likely to own cars and use motorized modes. Built environment characteristics like mixed land use appear to significantly reduce travel time in 2016 but do not result in higher non-motorized transport mode share. We contribute to existing literature by evaluating changes in the relationship of built environment and travel behavior during a period of rapid urbanization and economic growth in a Chinese city. Amid growing enthusiasm for a "new urban science" and "smart city" approaches to urban management, "big data" is expected to create radical new opportunities for urban research and practice. Meanwhile, anthropologists, sociologists, and human geographers, among others, generate highly contextualized and nuanced data, sometimes referred to as 'thick data,' that can potentially complement, refine and calibrate big data analytics while generating new interpretations of the city through diverse forms of reasoning. While researchers in a range of fields have begun to consider such questions, scholars of urban affairs have not yet engaged in these discussions. The article explores how ethnographic research could be reconciled with big data-driven inquiry into urban phenomena. We orient our critical reflections around an illustrative example: road safety in Mexico City. We argue that big and thick data can be reconciled in and through three stages of the research process: research formulation, data collection and analysis, and research output and knowledge representation. The spatial distribution of public hospitals is a crucial factor in patient access and thus important to health equity, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. In China, a major issue is to improve accessibility to public health care in the face of the limited space for further growth of cities. Therefore, this study assesses the current spatial accessibility patterns to public hospitals in Shanghai, using point density analysis and the comprehensively improved gravity model. The results identify the challenges of inadequate and imbalanced spatial distribution of public hospitals at the district level and show that the central urban area has more high-quality public health care resources and also has higher accessibility levels. Based on the comparisons in each district, the study also summarizes four policy implications for future public hospital and public health care system optimization in Shanghai, which can also be leveraged for the planning of public hospitals in other cities or other public service facilities. The first is to deploy public hospitals in areas with a large population and to introduce branches of top-level hospitals to noncentral areas.
