The species list of Dytiscidae of Iran has been composed using recently studied material and all literature data known to us. We report 139 species of Iranian diving beetles including one Dytiscus species of uncertain taxonomic position. Two species, Agabus amoenus Solsky, 1874 and Copelatus pulchellus (Klug, 1834) are recorded for the first time from Iran. For 57 species, new provincial records are provided. Twenty-two species and one genus have been excluded from the Iranian diving beetle fauna as based on misidentifications. The distributional pattern in Iran and preferred habitat (if available) are summarised for each species and discussed in general. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydaticus dhofarensis Pederzani, 2003, the only endemic diving beetle known from Dhofar Region is newly recorded from Masirah Island, central Oman. Analysis of 3ʹ region of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene (cox1) reveals that specimens from Oman differs only in 1% of the sequence from specimens of the widespread Indomalayan H. bipunctatus Wehncke, 1876. In addition, study of extensive material of H. dhofarensis shows that the elytral colour pattern and body shape, previously considered as diagnostic characters, vary significantly, and especially the specimens from more northern localities agree completely with H. bipunctatus. Therefore, Hydaticus dhofarensis is considered as a junior subjective synonym of H. bipunctatus. The occurrence of this predominantly Indomalayan species in southern Oman is briefly discussed. New data on the distribution of 40 species of Dytiscidae are provided. Most of these records are from the Balkan Peninsula (Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Romania), northern Africa (Algeria and Libya), the Caucasus Region (Armenia, Azerbaijan and the South European Territory of Russia), Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) and the Himalaya Region (Bhutan, northern India and Nepal). Two species, Hygrotus rufus (Clark, 1863) and Copelatus bacchusi Wewalka, 1981, known previously only from the Palearctic, are reported for the first time from the Oriental Region. Eight species are reported for the first time from Bhutan. Seven of these species, including three species new for the Palearctic Region, were provided by the insect dealer Jingke Li, but the provenance of the specimens is regarded as questionable. The necessity of publishing new records before accepting them for catalogues, e.g., the Catalogue of Palearctic Dytiscidae, is emphasised. Twenty-eight species of water beetles and shore beetles are recorded for the first time from Mongolia: Dytiscidae (16): Acilius sulcatus (Linnaeus, 1758), Agabus amoenus (Solsky, 1874), A. blatta Jakowlew, 1897, A. japonicus continentalis Guéorguiev, 1970, A. moestus (Curtis, 1835), A. thomsoni (Sahlberg, 1871), Bidessus nasutus Sharp, 1887, Colymbetes dolabratus (Paykull, 1798), Dytiscus circumcinctus Ahrens, 1811, Hydaticus aruspex Clark, 1864, H. continentalis Balfour-Browne, 1944, Hydroglyphus trassaerti (Feng, 1936), Hygrotus confluens (Fabricius, 1787), Laccornis oblongus (Stephens, 1835), Nebrioporus assimilis (Paykull, 1798), Rhantus rufus Zimmermann, 1922; Helophoridae (3): Helophorus bergrothi Sahlberg, 1880, H. kryzanovskii Angus, 1984, H. timidus Motschulsky, 1860; Hydrophilidae (6): Crenitis apicalis (Reitter, 1896), Enochrus coarctatus (Gredler, 1863), E. melanocephalus (Olivier, 1792), E. testaceus (Fabricius, 1801), Laccobius syriacus Guillebeau, 1896, Paracymus chalceolus Solsky, 1874; Hydraenidae (1): Ochthebius joosti Jäch, 1992; Heteroceridae (2): Augyles obliteratus (Kiesenwetter, 1843), Heterocerus marginatus (Fabricius, 1787). The presence of Haliplus ruficollis (De Geer, 1774) (Haliplidae), Hydroglyphus hamulatus (Gyllenhal, 1813) (Dytiscidae), Cercyon marinus (Thomson, 1853), Hydrophilus dauricus Mannerheim, 1852, Paracymus aeneus (Germar, 1824) (Hydrophilidae), and Ochthebius evanescens Sahlberg, 1875 (Hydraenidae) in Mongolia is confirmed by new findings. Two species of the genus Yola Gozis, 1886 were recently collected in Al Dakhiliyah Province, north Oman, both members of the Yola bicarinata species group: Yola porcata (Klug, 1834), previously known in the Arabian Peninsula only from Saudi Arabia, is recorded from Oman for the first time; Yola unguicularis sp. n. is described and illustrated. The new species is unique within the members of the genus with modified protarsal claws. The number of known Yola species hereby increased to 48; six species are presently known from the Arabian Peninsula. The total number of Dytiscidae species occurring in Oman increased to 30. The first account of the predaceous diving beetles or Dytiscidae of Jordan is presented. Altogether 25 species are listed, although the occurrence of two of them remains doubtful. Nine species are recorded from the territory of Jordan for the first time, and the first precise locality data are provided for an additional seven species. Bidessus anatolicus Wewalka, 1972 and Nebrioporus stearinus (Kolenati, 1845) recorded recently from Jordan based on misidentification are removed from the list. Hydrotrupes chinensis Nilsson, 2003 described from the holotype collected in Anhui Province, China, is newly recorded from three localities in Guangdong Province, ca. 750 km southwest from the type locality. The species seems to inhabit hygropetric habitats exclusively, with diurnal larvae and nocturnal adults hidden under stones or in cracks in rock during the day; when disturbed, the adults readily jumped off the rock surface. The adult is redescribed. The larvae are described and illustrated for the first time, with detailed morphometric and chaetotaxic analyses of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, legs, last abdominal segment, and urogomphi. Whereas similar morphologically to the Nearctic endemic Hydrotrupes palpalis Sharp, 1882, the first instar larva of H. chinensis distinguishes by presence of six lamellae clypeales, two additional spine-like setae both on the last abdominal segment and urogomphomere 1, and the strongly developed egg bursters. Records of the predaceous diving beetles of the genusEretesLaporte, 1833 (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) in Central Europe are summarised. While old records from the beginning of the twentieth century from the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Romania belong toEretes griseus(Fabricius, 1781), a species which has not been recaptured in Central Europe for nearly the last hundred years, recently collected specimens from Hungary and Slovakia belong toE. sticticus(Linnaeus, 1767) and represent its first records in these countries as well as in Central Europe. The first specimens were collected at light during hot summer nights and may document a recent spreading of the species from the Mediterranean. The eastern Mediterranean Hydroporus bodemeyeri species complex, which so far includes three species, H. bodemeyeri Ganglbauer, 1900, Hydroporus anatolicus J.Balfour-Browne, 1963 and Hydroporus cuprescens Fery and Miller, 1995, is revised. Three new taxa are described: H. anatolicus koksali ssp. nov. from north-eastern Turkey, H. bodemeyeri cariaensis ssp. nov. from south-western Turkey and Rhodes, and Hydroporus kurdistanicus sp. nov. from south-eastern Turkey. Hydroporus guignoti Gschwendtner, 1935 described from Albania and Greece and previously regarded as a synonym of H. bodemeyeri, is treated as a distinct subspecies H. bodemeyeri guignoti stat. nov. A geometric morphometric analysis of body shape within the complex is presented, which confirms the separate status of all recognized taxa, with considerable overlapping between the subspecies of H. anatolicus and H. bodemeyeri. We provide an initial hypothesis on the origin of the contemporary distribution of H. bodemeyeri and H. cuprescens, assuming their vicariant diversification from an Anatolian ancestor. According to the just-world theory, people tend to blame innocent victims for the misfortune they experienced to preserve the belief in a just world. Our preregistered experimental study (N = 404; a university participants pool) employed work-related scenarios to test the possibility of reducing victim-blaming by taking a victim’s perspective. We also explored whether “victim-blaming” occurs for both undeserved negative and positive outcomes, i.e. attributions of blame or virtue in scenarios including demotions, dismissals, public reprimands, and removal of responsibilities as negative outcomes; and bonuses, promotions, salary raises, and job hirings as positive outcomes. We found that victim-blaming followed from the just-world belief only in scenarios where an individual gains unjust benefit. The belief in a just world could thus lead to the misattribution of positive work outcomes and could result in biased human resources management. Taking the victim’s perspective did not reduce attributions of blame and virtue. However, participants considered the outcomes more deserved when they took the perpetrator’s perspective. This finding may be a warning that if a perpetrator’s perception framework is more accessible for assessing a particular situation, the victims will be blamed more. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
