Despite her prolific publication history, Anne Dutton (1692–1765) has received little in-depth scholarly attention. Working with a select coterie of dissenting printers and booksellers in London from her home in Great Gransden, Huntingdonshire, Dutton published in nearly every genre popular with eighteenth-century women writers: diary, autobiography, hymns, poems, letters, formal religious discourse and polemical treatises. Her writings reveal a powerful voice that allowed Dutton to enter areas of pastoral ministry unknown to any other eighteenth-century Baptist woman. Her vivid and accessible prose made her one of the most popular religious writers during the Evangelical Revival of the late 1730s and early 1740s. Dutton exhibited a mature brand of authorial power as a woman writer across three decades and more than sixty volumes of printed letters and religious treatises on topics that few women of her day dared to approach, cleverly redefining the limits of public and private spheres for women writers in her two defences of the right of women to publish. This editorial reflects on the research published in Business History in the last few years in the context of wider discussions in the field of business history. In particular, we consider the authors and their thematic orientation, reflection on the geographic and disciplinary distribution and gender balance in the field. Articles published cluster around specific time periods, countries and regions, with early modern or medieval history, and research beyond Europe and North America less well represented. On the basis of this survey, we consider the journal's recently changed aims and scope and what we see as a contribution to knowledge in business history. We particularly consider the role of theory in historical research and affirm our commitment to a range of relevant contributions in the journal. These are empirical, historiographical and theoretical in nature, and support our strategy to maintain Business History as a journal publishing interdisciplinary and diverse research. This paper utilises a systematic review of 110 Polish corporate histories to explore the question of how the genre of corporate history has evolved over time in a country that has undergone multiple transitions. The corporate histories subjected to review were published in three different historical periods: prior to World War II, during the socialist period and following the transition to capitalism. The analysis is focussed on both formal and thematic features of Polish corporate history as a genre. This paper contributes to the business history literature in three ways. First, it showcases some unique features of relatively unknown corporate histories in the Polish context. Second, it provides an empirical illustration of the process of genre evolution by analysing continuity and change in corporate histories published over three different historical periods. Contemporary Italian poetry began to spread in the U.S. after World War II, appearing in literary magazines and anthologies along with neorealist films and novels. The reception of this genre requires an analysis of the mechanisms and factors that make books and authors relevant in different markets. An author's success and the visibility of books are not measured only by sales, especially for poetry in translation. Publishers consider the prestige such works can bring to their catalog, even though they often involve a long-term investment and possible economic loss. Italian poetry has been crucial for many professional translators-in-training, representing their first encounter with Italian literature. Poetry translation is a complex challenge that requires negotiation between the translator's creative freedom and attention to form and meaning. William Weaver is an example of a translator who sought an original voice through his approach to Italian literature. Robert Lowell explored the potential of "Imitations" in his work. The reception of Italian poetry in the U.S. has been influenced by important intermediaries such as Renato Poggioli, professor of Comparative Literature at Harvard, and Marguerite Caetani with the magazine "Botteghe Oscure." Italian poets who debuted on the American scene and translators who made their works accessible to the public were identified. Modes of publication and indicators of legitimacy were considered, such as educational publications and integration into U.S. academic courses, but also critical reflections on Italian poetry that have been published in the American press and introductions and apparatuses found in translated works. Poetry is considered a legitimizing genre in the national and international literary scene, and some Italian poets have been consistently translated by English and American writers. Montale is a particular case study, as his works have been repeatedly retranslated by various poets and intellectuals, representing a laboratory of constant renegotiation of poetic form and meaning. The Universal History, which had a complicated publishing history from the 1730s to the 1780s, was a commercial undertaking by a group of London booksellers, aimed at satisfying curiosity for reliable information about the rest of the world. It was finally composed of two separate parts, the Ancient and the Modern, which, while eventually published as a single work, were distinct. Its first author was George Sale, the noted translator of the Qur'an, who emphasized the recourse to original Arab manuscripts, although, after his death in 1736, later authors had a different approach. This article looks first at the work's hostile view of Islam and claim that sympathy to it was a tactic of irreligious thinkers to undermine Christianity. It then analyses the somewhat confused discussion of the Arabs, which varies according to the sources used in the two parts, before highlighting the emphasis on Ottoman despotism. It finally evokes the call in the Modern Part for a European expedition to free North Africa from the Ottomans, destroy piracy in the Mediterranean, and encourage the North Africans to develop agriculture and trade. Phelan examines the evidence to support the claim that the assertion that Jews played a leading role in the slave trade in the period following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire originated with the work of a number of late nineteenth-century historians, particularly Heinrich Graetz and Wilhelm Roscher. He finds prior examples of this historical motif in the work of several earlier historians, and traces its origins back to the Henry Hart Milman's History of the Jews published in 1829. His article demonstrates that Milman's work was widely known and used throughout the nineteenth century, and examines the reasons behind the emphasis in his work on the mutual antagonism between Christians and Jews. Phelan then goes on to examine the adoption of this motif by late nineteenth-century Jewish writers, including the historian and folklorist Joseph Jacobs, and its appearance in standard reference works like The Jewish Encyclopaedia. He concludes with some reflections on the reasons for this surprising development, as well as some suggestions about the reasons for the renewed interest in this topic among historians in recent years. Chinua Achebe's influence on the development and institution of African literature has proved to be pertinent, critical, and indelible. This paper reflects on the history of translating and publishing this renowned Nigerian writer's major novels and essays in France. It identifies two French publishers, Présence Africaine and Actes Sud, as the most important agents in the translation and publication of Achebe's works. By conducting interviews with Achebe's French editor and translator as well as reviewing published work by scholars and one of Achebe's translators, this study examines the trajectory of Achebe's works in France and how the ideologies of the agents may have affected which/when works were chosen for translation and publication. This study demonstrates that Achebe's trajectory in French has been eclectic and largely controlled by both publishers' worldviews and politics as well as broader discourses in African literature, such as literary legitimisation and colonialism. The objective of this essay is to map the growing number of works that focus on the environmental humanities and to review two important contributions to the ongoing debates that are defining the direction of Latin American and Caribbean cultural studies. In 2019, Héctor Hoyos published Things with a History: Transcultural Materialism and the Literatures of Extraction in Contemporary Latin America, as Elizabeth DeLoughrey published Allegories of the Anthropocene. While the scope of these two works varies in terms of the regional and/or national geographies they cover, as well as the authors and artists they analyse, both books attempt to contest the nature/culture binary – along with other Modern dichotomies – from very different (perhaps even opposite) positions and angles: while Hoyos calls for a de-allegorisation (namely, a "literalisation") of several important Latin American works, DeLoughrey, on the other hand, invites us to reconsider allegory as a way of symbolising the "perceived disjunction between humans and the planet, between our 'species' and a dynamic external 'nature'". Based on archival research, this article analyses the publishing history of the map of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in the Petermanns Mitteilungen journal. Commissioned by the provincial government between 1836 and 1855, this map was drawn up by two German army officers who had emigrated to Brazil. In 1859 the Swiss naturalist Johann Jakob von Tschudi acted as an intermediary between the Brazilian authorities and the German publishing house Perthes in Gotha. The editorial process reflects both the transatlantic circulation of maps and geographical knowledge and the creation of a global community of map readers and users in the German-speaking context in the mid-nineteenth century. This article examines nineteenth-century chess-player and writer George Walker's essay 'Anatomy of the Chess Automaton' (1839). Walker's writing frequently highlighted how spaces of urban modernity co-existed uneasily with historical memories. His tendency to highlight disreputable scenarios regarding chess-play can be set against a narrative which suggests chess-play became respectable in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. Unusually for Walker, however, his 'Anatomy of the Chess Automaton' demonstrates a desire to close off meaning and complexity, to diminish the potential for disreputable acts, whilst existing at odds with the historical context in which he wrote. This cultural mode in which Walker operated in can be viewed through the conceptual frameworks of curiosity (following Barbara M. Benedict) and respectability (following Mike Huggins) which highlight ideas of regulation, consumption, performance, transgression, and ambition. This article employs the frameworks of curiosity and respectability to interrogate related leisure and sporting practices in relation to the Automaton Chess-Player which existed outside the regular boundaries of society. It continues research previously published in Sport in History and elsewhere on the nature of chess-play and chess-spectacle as a disreputable spectacle. Ultimately, I show how both Walker and the object of his essay were curiosities themselves, engaging in an infinite game which produced a jumble of meanings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The norms governing translation, such as those related to the selection of source texts for translation, change over time. This article presents a theoretical model of norm dynamics by combining the relevant theories about norm evolution in the fields of translation studies, political science, and international relations. Then, focusing on norms related to the selection of texts for translation, we make a case study of translation norm dynamics based on China's history of publishing foreign literature over the past few decades, focusing on Yilin Magazine's publication of the Chinese version of Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile. Finally, we discuss the role of actors' agency in norm evolution, strategies of norm entrepreneurship, centralisation, and peripheralisation, as well as the forces shaping norm dynamics. The findings are that norm dynamics are strongly influenced by extrinsic and intrinsic factors, such as diplomatic relations, ideological disputes, changes in the economic system, and commercial considerations. The Journal of Wine Research (JWR) has a near 30–year history of publishing varied articles examining aspects of viticulture, oenology and the international wine trade. The primary objective of this research is to examine the characteristics of literature published in the JWR through bibliographic analysis. The research utilises the Scopus database to identify the most productive authors, countries and papers published in the JWR since it was established in 1990. The total number of publications and citations are used to assess productivity, in terms of the number of publications, influence, and the number of citations of both authors and countries. Network maps were created using the VOSViewer software examining patterns of co–authorship, co–citation and keyword co–occurrence. The results indicate that the most prolific authors, in terms of the number of publications, are not necessarily producing the most profound research that gains traction through citations in the field. This study is helpful for prospective JWR authors, readers and editors who wish to understand the intellectual landscape of the journal in terms of the productivity and impact of different stakeholder groups and the noted trends of publications. This essay reconstructs the publication history of the first French translation of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, which came out in Paris in 1848, three years after the book's initial publication in Boston. It emphasizes the key role of British abolitionists Kate Parkes and John B. Estlin in translating Douglass's Narrative and making it available to a French audience. It also documents the 'non-reception' of the book. Published in the politically volatile context of the February Revolution of 1848, Vie de Frédéric Douglass, esclave américain went largely unnoticed. The article provides an overview of the evolution of the journal "Textile History" with a particular attention to the impact of gender on shaping the publication's content. Topics include the journal's exclusive focus on textile tools, mills, factories and others during its first decade of publication, its efforts to broaden its mandate by inviting contributions that would include fashion and design and museum studies, and a brief background on the transition of its subject matter.

Several cities in Sweden have been providing book-printing facilities since the 1640s. In our quantitative and explorative analysis of library catalogs from the National Library of Sweden and the National Library of Finland we identify the general trends in publishing, how book-printing has been affected by political events, and how printing developed at different paces in different parts of the realm. We have developed a new method for analyzing the totality of publishing through extensive data harmonization and comprehensive statistical analysis, and by treating library catalogs not as an endpoint of bibliographic research but as an inherently rich source of information. This facilitated the quantitative assessment of printing in the Swedish realm based on the metadata contained in library catalogs. Our data-driven approach to the transformation of public discourse demonstrates that whereas the amount of printed material grew steadily, political ruptures affected the development of printing. We also suggest that the culture of books and printing is best understood through the dynamics of competing intellectual hubs consisting of the university cities and the political center in Stockholm. The ever-mutating socio-political environment within which the Moroccan private press has evolved since the beginning of the 1990s has made it difficult for researchers to trace its general features over 25 years. After contextualising the non-partisan media takeover in the 1990s, this paper proposes a rereading of the political history of the Moroccan private press by dividing it into four periods: Uncertain Beginnings (1991-1998), Free Retrospection (1999-2005), Confrontation and Censorship (2006-2011), and Normalisation and Self-censorship (2011-2016). The designation of each phase draws on a scale of six indicators: political environment, media environment, principal titles, editorial features, ratings, and censorship. The paper focuses on the interaction between the press and the authorities along these phases and draws the implications of this interaction for the social functions of the private press and the status and utilities of press freedom in Morocco. Dutch empires in publishing and territorial colonization are examined and compared during the 19th and 20th centuries for their relevancy to today. As decolonization took hold around the world, the Dutch divested geopolitical control of their colonies. At the same time, science publishing emerged from a precarious financial footing to one of solid revenue, profit, and unrestrained growth. This article illuminates the role that translation can play in the study of the history of publishing and culture. It analyses Einaudi’s strategies for publishing contemporary foreign poetry in 1960s Italy. Interpreting unpublished archival data from a Bourdieusian perspective, the article reassesses the role played by Einaudi in the political and poetic movements of the day, arguing that poetry translation was instrumental in modifying the publishing, literary and political field, and in redefining, transnationally, the intellectual identity of the Einaudi editors. The study of the history of publishing from the perspective of translation, in conjunction with a sociological methodology, not only discloses the position taken by the Italian publisher within the field, but ultimately provides an alternative historical account of how culture was shaped in post-Second World War Italy. This article analyses the Cairo International Book Fair as a “field configuring event” (FCE), namely, as a recurrent mass event that both reflects the social fields surrounding it and contributes to the shaping of these fields. More specifically, it is argued that the Cairo International Book Fair constitutes a major FCE in Egyptian society, which plays a significant role, not only in the publishing field and in the cultural and economic fields at large, but also in the political field. Focusing on the political field, the article traces how the Cairo International Book Fair in recent decades both reflected key struggles and developments in the Egyptian political field and affected these struggles. In the 1980s, the fair served as a platform for voicing and negotiating various positions toward Egypt’s relations with Israel; in the 1990s, it served as a platform for negotiating the relations between Islamists and Liberals; and in the 2000s, it served as a platform for negotiating the “permitted” level of criticism toward Mubarak’s regime. This article traces the history of French publishing houses in Asia in order to highlight their involvement in the emergence of Francophone communities among cultures classified as non-Francophone. It aims to examine the origin of French publishing houses from their initial appearances in Asia, the history of the publishing houses founded by religious communities in various cities in Asia, as well as the nature of books they publish will be studied. Next to be examined is the secular milieu, with the arrival of the first chain of publishing houses that fall within professional editorial organizations. The case of Albert Nachbaur and Georges Bigot will be examined as a prototype. This brief look at French publishing in Asia invites the reader to consider future discussions of other partners involved: members connected to book networks, such as the French Alliance, whose libraries cover major cities in Asia. An essay is presented on the place of self and species in the 19th century and explores whether a thesis or fragmented form can mobilize climate change or social change discourse in more productive ways. Particular focus is given on the 1859 books "Self-Help" by Samuel Smiles and "On the Origin of Species" by Charles Darwin. It examines the anecdotal style, fragmentary form and publising history of these books.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Dutch East India Company exerted monopolistic control over spices and coffee, with huge financial returns for those who invested in the company. Also during this time, a combination of business factors emerged to allow the early distribution of published works to gain hold and become a viable commercial enterprise. The early years of Dutch publishing are not well known but when examined they parallel the historical context in which geopolitical empires were the norm. The story of the start of a modern day publishing house is examined through the dual histories of two Dutch business ventures that thrived and failed during a turbulent time of colonial exploitation. Novelty held a special attraction for book buyers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but new texts carried more risk for the publisher than titles already proven to be good sellers. Canny bookseller-publishers therefore adopted a publishing strategy that would benefit from the commercial safety of proven sellers while simultaneously exploiting the cachet of the ‘new’. They could maximise the sales potential of a book by reprinting an already market-tested text but repackaging it with new and improved ingredients, often provided by the text's original author. Such enlargements were never left unpublicised on the title page which, as the primary means of marketing texts in the early modern book trade, had to function both as a dust-jacket-style advertisement intended for bookstall browsers, and as a discrete advertisement posted remote from the physical volume. Given the safe bet of reprints and the marketability of new material, the promotional nature of title pages therefore necessitated revised, augmented, or otherwise enlarged editions to be produced by the author and bookseller to attract attention and sales. The publishers and editors of the early Finnish women's magazines were familiar with Central European, English and Swedish women's magazines. A women's magazine started the history of Finnish magazine publishing in 1782. However, it survived less than 6 months and the next 2 women's magazines appeared only 70 years later. The article asks how the publishers of the first four magazines chose, adopted and localized this particular international magazine genre. Successful localization needs the approval of the content by the readers. Only the fourth women's magazine Koti ja Yhteiskunta (Home and Society) published in 1889–1911 managed to create a permanent readership. The central theoretical concept used to analyze the localization is the gender contract, which defines the rights and duties of women in society and is renegotiated as women's situation is changing. This article discusses the commercial activities involved in the book industry of Seville, Spain, during the 16th century. The author comments on the role of publishers, librarians, and merchants in forming a successful trade network with Europe and the Americas. The process of business negotiation at the time is also explored.

British pirate publishers in the Romantic period competed not only for sales in the book market, but to establish a more democratic model for the ownership of texts. Attention to the material conditions and the motivations of the parties involved in producing illegitimate editions reveals how Romantic authorship was shaped by interactions between copyright law, authors' impressions of their rights, and the pirates' ability to subvert those prior claims. The texts and paratexts of some of the many unauthorized editions of Percy Shelley's Queen Mab (1813) will illustrate how the political and commercial intentions of radical publishers often counteracted Shelley's goals while working against the structure of the bookselling industry. Out of these very conflicts emerged the conceptions of that poem and, more broadly, the ideology of Romantic authorship that the radical political movement and later scholars came to know. This article identifies the reprintings, without attribution, of extracts from Gerrard Winstanley's last publication, The Law of Freedom in a Platform (1652) in a variety of news-books and topical pamphlets. It explores the domestication and misrepresentations of Winstanley's views as editors and publishers cut and paraphrased his texts and juxtaposed them with more conventional proposals for law reform. The crucial context for the excerpting of The Law of Freedom was the broad movement for law reform associated with radical and army pressure on the Rump parliament in 1651–1652. Winstanley texts were associated with the working of the Hale commission set up by the parliament to discuss law reform and modified to present the army and Cromwell in a positive and optimistic light. Winstanley's social and spiritual vision was underplayed. The Law of Freedom was clearly read by news publishers and some of his proposals were made available to a wide readership, but in a muted form. Finally the article considers what these uses of the passages from The Law of Freedom suggest about the Winstanley's place within radical parliamentarianism, identifying themes shared with other radicals, as well as his distinctive positions. This article examines the production and publishing history of two major Australian dictionaries: theMacquarie Dictionary(first edition, 1981) and theAustralian National Dictionary(1988). It addresses why they were made, who made them, and what their publishing histories were. In particular, it shows how the dictionaries were part of a long tradition of dictionary-making and debates over the nature of Australian English as well as the commercial and cultural nationalism of the 1970s and 1980s. Their story is insightful of the broader anxieties about national identity that has marked intellectual and cultural projects such as these. While the cultural trajectories of the Celtic language communities have some broad similarities in the long term, their histories in the medium term were quite different. The article approaches this issue through a comparative analysis of the print cultures of Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Breton and Irish in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The approach is both quantitative and qualitative, surveying total production in the four languages as well as looking at the presence and absence of different genres in the different languages. It also examines diaspora publishing in America and Australia. The different patterns are explained primarily in terms of the nature and extent of institutional church support for publishing in those languages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Folk-Lore Society in its early years was both a learned society and a printing club producing both a journal and a yearly volume of book length, the so-called 'extra volume'. This article investigates the titles that were promised for the latter series. Some twenty-six works were proposed in the Society's formative years between 1879 and 1883, but most of these were never to appear. Those that did were either serialized in the journal or appeared under other imprints. Described is the range and nature of the work offered to the Society. The editing of comedias in Spain in the seventeenth century began with the colume Seis comedias de Lope de Vega. Printed in Lisbon in 1603, recently doubts have been raised amongst specialists as to whether the book was an unofficial copy and whether there were various different editions. The presence of variants in the title pages of the examples currently known (not all of which have previously been analysed) suggests that this is indeed the case. However, in the light of the analysis conducted here, the definitive conclusion is that there was only one edition with a range of variants. It is difficult to know what could have given rise to the variants of different issues, which produced examples supposedly produced in Madrid, but there are grounds to propose the hypothesis of a co-edition. The article concludes with an overview of the studies which report on the different examples of the book since the nineteenth century, thereby aiding in our knowlegdge of its reception in studies on Spanish drama. The article examines the figure of Tomás Carrascón de las Cortes y Medrano (1595–c. 1633) and his pamphleteering activity during the second decade of the seventeenth century in England. A close look at his anti-Catholic pamphlets, Hispanus conversus (London, 1623), Scrutamini Scripturas: The Exhortation of a Spanish Converted Monke (London, 1624), and Miracles Unmasked (London, 1625), reveals his astute use of Spanish and Portuguese Catholic sources against Rome. An examination of his reference lists and marginal annotations discloses a new and heretofore forgotten canon of Iberian Catholic authors who exerted considerable influence during this period. The evidence demonstrates a concerted effort to counteract the exertions of Recusant printing presses in England and northern Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author discusses authorial annotations made to copies of the play "The Seege of Urbin" and the collection "Four New Playes" by playwright Sir William Killigrew in the 17th century. The Restoration plays "Selindra," "Ormasdes," and "Pandora" are mentioned, as well as publishing in the 17th century and the analysis of marginalia. Revisions to the plays and the relationship between authors and readers are also discussed.

This article discusses the consequences of writing non-religious works via an examination of Jesuit Baltasar Gracián, who lived in the Province of Aragón, Spain, during the 17th century. The author examines the reaction by the Jesuit community to Gracián's works, which resulted in his request to transfer to another religious order. She also analyzes the rules and regulations regarding the departure and transfer from the Society of Jesus at the time, citing the "Constitutions of the Society of Jesus."

In this article I reexamine eighteenth century "character" by rearticulating it with the period's media ecologies. I argue that Britons perceived a particularly close relationship between familiar letters and character, and that the study of published familiar correspondence has the potential to reveal eighteenth-century character as a fundamentally relational form of identity. To make my case I discuss the mediations of character that governed the publication of Alexander Pope's familiar correspondence on a massive scale (1735-42). By paying attention not only to the text of the letters but also to the portrait engravings and other visual elements that were integral to the letters' publication and reception, I show that character in the eighteenth century was invariably linked to the media forms through which it circulated: character could not be thought apart from the technologies of inscription or imprinting, the reading materials, and the infrastructures that facilitated its inscription and dissemination. However Pope's character was formulated, it therefore inevitably emerged as an interface between media forms and their users. In articulating the print publication of Pope's familiar letters with the formulation and circulation of character, I aim to show that mediation was fundamental to the very constitution of character in eighteenth century Britain. This article examines a puzzling edition of three devotional/mystic treatises compiled by the Franciscan Francisco de (H)Evia and published under the title of Cruz de Cristo , which, according to its colophon, was printed by the Cromberger press in Seville in 1543. Typographical analysis suggests that the edition was in fact the earliest known product of the press which Estacio Carpintero was setting in that year at Seville. Drawing upon archival material as well as the results of bibliographical analysis, Griffin speculates upon the reasons why the Cromberger firm, at that time under the stewardship of Brígida Maldonado, the resourceful widow of the famous printer Juan Cromberger, might have chosen to outsource [KEY WORD: outsourcing] to a jobbing printer the production of this popular compilation that would eventually be banned by the Spanish Inquisition. The article illustrates how wary ambitious synthesising undertakings like the Iberian Book Project should be of taking at face value information contained in bibliographies as well as in the colophons of early printed books. In common with a small number of other areas in Europe, Catalonia and Valencia stand as intriguing examples of regions where the language of the everyday and the language of published vernacular discourse were quite different. Using Iberian Books as a starting point, this article attempts to trace publishing trends in these regions during the first great age of print. For Catalonia and Valencia to share in the cultural and commercial opportunities presented by the broader world of the Iberian book, they had to do so at the expense of their own language - Catalán. Nonetheless, the decline of Catalán-language literature in this period has perhaps been overstated. Per head of population, Catalonia and Valencia produced twice as much printed material in their native vernacular than Portugal. Until very recently, scholars were confronted with a distorted picture of the book world of Renaissance Iberia. Forced to rely on incomplete and fragmented surveys of printing, there was no real basis from which to understand the nature of the Iberian experience or indeed how this contrasted with other European countries. The appearance in 2010 of Iberian Books sought to redress this problem. By knitting together library catalogues and existing bibliographies, scholars now have access to a single bibliography of books printed in Spain, Portugal, Mexico and Peru before 1601 or printed elsewhere in Spanish or Portuguese. They can also access a global survey of surviving copies. This article discusses the rationale and methodology employed by the Iberian Book Project, as well as offering a frank assessment of its limitations. More significantly, however, it harnesses the underlying datasets of the project in an attempt to understand the broader geography of print in the Peninsula, surveying both its structure and the changing patterns of production from the age of incunabula up to the beginning of the seventeenth century. This paper makes novel use of digital archives and the history of publishing to reveal the previously unknown author of the first cookbook published by avonian in the Carolinas. The traditional tools of the culinary historian, including textual analysis and biogiaphical research, proved insufficient to identify the author of the Carolina Receipt 1300k (1832,). The researchers therefo, situated the cookbook within the social and intellectual milieu of antebellum Charleston—not only the traditional female networks of domestic literature and charitable works, but also the masculine politics of Nullification, slavery and states' rights, which led ultimately to the Civil War. This article argues that the Jesuit Relations, commonly read as the accounts of daring French travelers to the New World in the seventeenth century, must also be understood in light of the colony-centric circulation of the texts. In a step that has never before been considered part of the process through which the Relations collected and circulated information, some—and perhaps all—of the texts were sent back to Canada after being edited and published in Paris, giving Jesuits in the colony an opportunity to consult the published texts to see how they had been changed in France. This article focuses on two related areas of scholarship on the Relations that need re-evaluation in light of the colony-centric circulation of the texts: the status of the texts as travel writing, and as the premiere source of ethnographic data on the Amerindian groups that the missionaries encountered in Eastern Canada. This article considers an experiment in colonial race relations in Northern Nigeria of the 1940s, manifest in the creation of a book and newspaper production community, the Gaskiya Corporation in Zaria in 1945. The discussion traces the liberal ideas behind it, the putting of those ideas into practice, and the consequential difficulties encountered by the two main protagonists (Rupert East and Abubakar Imam) in the project as they found themselves on opposite sides of labour relations disputes. A central figure in the establishment of the Gaskiya Corporation, Rupert East, is finally deposed as its Chairman and leaves the colonial service when his view of the primacy of educational and cultural development is overtaken by the view that commercial viability is the first aim of the Corporation. Nevertheless, throughout the remainder of the twentieth century, the Corporation and its successor organisations lay at the heart of the development of Hausa literature and the spread of literacy in Nigeria. Long before they were analyzed by demographers, the London bills of mortality circulated among the public, shaping the way people in the seventeenth century understood the geography of the city, the spread of disease, and the passage of time. Focusing on their role during the London plague of 1665, this article examines how the bills of mortality were produced, distributed, and interpreted. Reconstructing this process reveals how the reporting of the epidemic depended upon the collective efforts of hundreds of individuals acting at the local parish level. This article argues that regional variations in audiences have played an important and generally unexplored role in journalism history. Its geographic analysis of the reading patterns of the Saturday Evening Post in 1911, 1920, 1928, 1935, and 1944 finds strong areas of readership in the Western United States and low readership in the South. The pattern of the Post closely resembles that of another Curtis Publishing Company magazine, the Ladies' Home Journal, during a similar time period. Post readership also showed a correlation with such demographic areas as literacy rates, race, family size, income, and ownership of household appliances. The article argues that a consistent geographic and demographic pattern of readership over more than three decades suggests a deeper, more complex relationship between the Post and its audience than one created solely by editorial content. It reinforces the idea of Post readers as well-to-do white urbanites. Yet it shows that Post readership was far more complex than the notion that "everybody read the Post" (a common implication through the years).
