Urinary tract infection (UTI) prevention benefits of cranberry intake are clinically validated, especially for women and children. To ensure the benefits of cranberry dietary supplement products, the anti-adhesion activity (AAA) against uropathogenic bacteria is routinely used in in vitro bioassays to determine the activity in whole product formulations, isolated compounds, and ex vivo bioassays to assess urinary activity following intake. D-mannose is another dietary supplement taken for UTI prevention, based on the anti-adhesion mechanism. Compare the relative AAA of cranberry and D-mannose dietary supplements against the most important bacterial types contributing to the pathogenesis of UTI, and consider how certain components potentially induce in vivo activity. The current study used a crossover design to determine ex vivo AAA against both P- and Type 1-fimbriated uropathogenic Escherichia coli of either D-mannose or a cranberry fruit juice dry extract product containing 36 mg of soluble proanthocyanidins (PACs), using bioassays that measure urinary activity following consumption. AAA of extracted cranberry compound fractions and D-mannose were compared in vitro and potential induction mechanisms of urinary AAA explored. The cranberry dietary supplement exhibited both P-type and Type 1 in vitro and ex vivo AAA, while D-mannose only prevented Type 1 adhesion. Cranberry also demonstrated more robust and consistent ex vivo urinary AAA than D-mannose over each 1-week study period at different urine collection time points. The means by which the compounds with in vitro activity in each supplement product could potentially induce the AAA in urines was discussed relative to the data. Results of the current study provide consumers and healthcare professionals with additional details on the compounds and mechanisms involved in the positive, broad-spectrum AAA of cranberry against both E. coli bacterial types most important in UTIs and uncovers limitations on AAA and effectiveness of D-mannose compared to cranberry. Programs integrating social-emotional learning (SEL) and physical activity (PA) can contribute to positive behavior outcomes and development for adolescent girls. The purpose of this article is to report the development of the EmpowerHER Program curriculum. Specifically, this curriculum describes implementation strategies and activities tailored to adolescent girls while contributing to the literature surrounding health programs addressing PA and SEL components. Adolescent girls (10–14 years old) participated in an eight-session summer program that provided the opportunity to engage in fun-filled activities that encouraged PA and SEL. Strategies from the EmpowerHER program can be applied to curriculum development and program implementations in out-of-school settings to aid in promoting PA enjoyment and engagement for adolescents. Further education (FE) is an under-represented area in educational psychology practice. As young people move from education to employment, those who have received support for an additional need which is not then recognised as a disability by the 2010 Equality Act; special educational need (“SEN”) rather than special educational need and disability (“SEND”) are at a significant disadvantage. Research into young people’s views of their experience and hopes for the future is underexplored in this area. This small scale study used Q-methodology to investigate the views of ten young people with SEN (n2) and SEND (n8) as they leave further education. Three extracted factors, characterised broadly by need; social communication, physical needs, and learning difficulties, highlight different perspectives on the question of “what is important to you as you begin to prepare to leave college?”. Findings demonstrate some parity between young people with and without a disability recognised under the 2010 Equality Act, emphasising the importance of continued educational psychology involvement within the 16–25 age range. Philip Sherrard and Theodosius Dobzhansky, both Eastern Orthodox intellectuals, would have agreed on little. While Sherrard rejected modern science, especially evolution, Dobzhansky was one of evolution's leading figures. But Sherrard saw climate change coming and warned of it, whereas Dobzhansky was perhaps too easy in his liberal progressivism. Despite their major differences, however, Dobzhansky and Sherrard both shared a hostility towards reductionism and a mechanistic view of the universe. Community violence (CV) is a serious public health concern. To date, most of the existing research has focused on youth of color living in high-risk environments. The prior literature has shown that CV-exposed youth are at risk for post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), delinquency, and substance use. CV has also been tied to beliefs about violence being an acceptable way of resolving conflict, referred to as the Code of the Streets (COS). It is unclear how the trajectories of other CV-exposed populations may differ from vulnerable youth, including college students who are in a developmental period associated with high-risk for violence exposure. The study objectives were therefore to: 1) examine the relations between CV and delinquency (i.e. gang involvement, arrest, weapon ownership) and illicit substance use, as well as 2) investigate whether there are indirect effects between CV and both delinquency and illicit substance use through PTSS and COS beliefs among college students. The sample included 547 students from two universities (Mage = 20.31, SD = 2.08, Range = 18–28; 80.8% female; 57.8% White). CV was associated with delinquency and illicit substance use. COS beliefs had an indirect effect on the relation between CV and delinquency, but PTSS did not. Conversely, PTSS had an indirect effect on the link between CV and illicit substance use, but COS did not. College students are at risk for CV exposure and adverse outcomes. Interventions addressing PTSS and COS beliefs may be central to mitigating delinquent behaviors and illicit substance use in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research has called for nuanced scholarly investigations that synergise, complicate, and advance social theories of literacy. Accordingly, this study melds critical literacy, critical race theory, and multiliteracies to distil students' involvement with the canonical The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, investigating: What are participants' design experiences reading canonical literature through a critical race theory lens, and what does multimodal design reveal about students' critical literacies? Design reflects both understanding and meaning making using multiple sign systems. Applying case study methodologies, researchers investigated the experiences of 24 eleventh-grade students in an American literature course. Layers of inductive and deductive analysis reveal two findings specific to students' experiences with multiliteracies: successes with literal transmediation and barriers to imaginative transmediation. Findings were then deductively treated with tenets of critical literacy and critical race theory, revealing that students identified Whiteness as property while simultaneously participating in Colour-evasion and upholding White saviour traditions. The incidence of paediatric fractures among winter sport athletes is not adequately studied. Our objective was to categorize fractures that occurred in paediatric skiers and snowboarders at a single ski resort. X-rays of 756 skiers/snowboarders aged 3–17 diagnosed with a fracture were categorized using the Salter-Harris (SH) classification. SH fractures were seen in 158 (21%) patients, with 123 (77%) being Type II. There were no significant differences between patients with a SH fracture and patients with a non-SH fracture for age, sex, snowboarding or skiing, mechanism of injury, terrain or the resort conditions on the day of injury. The most common mechanism of injury was falling onto snow while collisions resulted in more severe injuries. Compared to fractures without growth plate involvement, a higher proportion of SH fractures were seen in the humerus, radius, fibula and thumb; a lower proportion of SH fractures were observed at the tibia and clavicle. This article examines the emerging legal cannabis sector in Zimbabwe since 2018, which focuses on medicinal and industrial cannabis with unlicenced uses remaining criminalised, as well as its implications for agrarian change. It shows that the formal sector is set up in a way that prioritises those with substantial resources – marginalising small-scale farmers and illicit cultivators. While this presents the risk of corporate capture, various factors combine to undermine agribusiness' production. However, prohibition of recreational cannabis and the formal sector's focus on export markets combine to preserve illicit cannabis markets and allow continuation of illicit livelihoods. Glomerular deposition of monoclonal IgM, frequently in the form of intracapillary pseudothrombi, can be seen in Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) and type I cryoglobulinemia (CG). They are typically associated with plasma cell or B-lymphoid neoplasms, particularly lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma (LPL). While infection is a frequent trigger of mixed (type II and III) CG, its association with type I CG is uncommon. We report two cases in which striking lambda-chain-restricted IgM deposits and acute kidney injury (AKI) occurred in the setting of known or suspected systemic infections, with prompt resolution on treatment of the infection. The novel myeloperoxidase inhibitor verdiperstat was developed as a treatment for neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases. During development, a computational prediction of verdiperstat liver safety was performed using DILIsym v8A, a quantitative systems toxicology (QST) model of liver safety. A physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model of verdiperstat was constructed in GastroPlus 9.8, and outputs for liver and plasma time courses of verdiperstat were input into DILIsym. In vitro experiments measured the likelihood that verdiperstat would inhibit mitochondrial function, inhibit bile acid transporters, and generate reactive oxygen species (ROS); these results were used as inputs into DILIsym, with two alternate sets of parameters used in order to fully explore the sensitivity of model predictions. Verdiperstat dosing protocols up to 600 mg BID were simulated for up to 48 weeks using a simulated population (SimPops) in DILIsym. Verdiperstat was predicted to be safe, with only very rare, mild liver enzyme increases as a potential possibility in highly sensitive individuals. Subsequent Phase 3 clinical trials found that ALT elevations in the verdiperstat treatment group were generally similar to those in the placebo group. Infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) is a common developmental and epileptic encephalopathy with poor long-term outcomes. A substantial proportion of patients with IESS have a potentially surgically remediable etiology. Despite this, epilepsy surgery is underutilized in this patient group. Some surgically remediable etiologies, such as focal cortical dysplasia and malformation of cortical development with oligodendroglial hyperplasia in epilepsy (MOGHE), are under-diagnosed in infants and young children. Even when a surgically remediable etiology is recognised, for example, tuberous sclerosis or focal encephalomalacia, epilepsy surgery may be delayed or not considered due to diffuse EEG changes, unclear surgical boundaries, or concerns about operating in this age group. In this review, the authors discuss the common surgically remediable etiologies of IESS, their clinical and EEG features, and the imaging techniques that can aid in their diagnosis. They then describe the surgical approaches used in this patient group, and the beneficial impact that early epilepsy surgery can have on developing brain networks. Epilepsy surgery remains underutilized even when a potentially surgically remediable cause is recognized. Overcoming the barriers that result in under-recognition of surgical candidates and underutilization of epilepsy surgery in IESS will improve long-term seizure and developmental outcomes. This exploratory study investigated the disruption to schools ministry caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Perspectives of church leaders, Christian parents, Christian teachers and organisations involved in schools ministry were consulted using online surveys, interviews and focus groups, to examine how schools ministry could be rebuilt, incorporating reflective practice and hence bringing positive change. The severe impact of extensive school closures and restrictions strongly solidified the move from being largely provision of RE, lunchtime events and collective worship, to much broader methods in response to listening to the needs of the school (both staff and pupils in a secular/mainstream setting). A striking observation was that schools ministry was viewed in many of these case study settings as a peripheral aspect of local church ministry and often devolved to specialist organisations. Arising needs and models of ministry have emphasised the value and effectiveness of relational approaches and listening to the needs of schools and responding accordingly. This reinforces the need for collaborative approaches and long-term development of relationships between church and school. Training needs identified concerned relationship building and vision and strategy development, with many stakeholders perceiving this as the way forward to more effective ministry activity. This article relies on the first and only representative survey data to estimate household carbon footprints (CFs) of China's large yet vastly understudied ethnic minority population, documenting for the first time significant ethnic disparities in CFs driven by ethnic minorities' relatively worse-off living standards: From 2010 to 2020, China's ethnic minority population contributed less than 6 percent of residential emissions, about 50 percent less than expected based on population share alone. Next, results from a counterfactual policy analysis find that the distributive effects of a carbon tax are regressive in urban areas but not in rural areas, increasing within and between ethnic group inequality in urban China. A carbon tax with revenue-neutral schemes, by contrast, helps to mitigate existing inequalities in society, reducing income- and ethnic-based forms of inequality. Results are robust to machine learning techniques employed to simulate potential heterogeneous household abatement scenarios. The findings emphasize the potential benefits of a carbon tax, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of climate justice and informing policy decisions that promote equitable outcomes for vulnerable segments of society. Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor and non-motor features. Many people with PD struggle with mental health issues such as depression. Evidence shows that people with PD may have trouble adopting a hopeful or positive orientation given their diagnosis and symptoms. Psychological treatments for PD are scarce and even more scarce are treatments that specifically focus on promoting hope and well-being. The Strengths, Hope, and Resourcefulness Program for People with Parkinson's Disease was developed to begin to address this treatment gap. This qualitative study identifies seven processes group members found helpful during treatment: Accessing Hope, Comparing, Drawing Together, Reaching Out Beyond Self, Releasing Emotion, Sharing Skills and Picking Up Resources, and Self-Reflecting Leading to Personal Insight. The unique contributions of an intentional and explicit hope, strengths, and resources intervention are discussed with specific attention to therapeutic process and practice. Provides client-elicited information useful to the implementation of hope and strength-focused approaches to group work with those with Parkinson's Disease. The group treatment may reinforce the value of hope as a therapeutic group factor by facilitating its emergence and contribution to group cohesion. Affords an important precursor to hope through the expression of difficult emotions in a safe environment. This paper draws together data from two projects on schooling dis/engagement in Australia. One project focused on mainstream schools and the strategies employed to retain and engage young people in learning, whereas the other explored the growing sector of alternative/flexible education for similar solutions. We found interesting parallels. For example, rich, relevant curricula delivered through innovative pedagogies alongside positive staff/student relationships were key elements in schooling engagement across both sectors. Those findings have been published elsewhere. This paper focuses on the contributions to schooling engagement that may be derived from mutually beneficial school/community relationships. Here, we examine one mainstream high school and one flexi secondary school, both situated in remote geolocations, that established bespoke school/community partnerships in response to local needs. We examined post-concussion symptom presentation, exercise, and sleep among pediatric athletes who sustained concussion during the school year vs. summer months. We evaluated athletes 6–18 years old within 21-days of concussion. They reported symptoms (Health and Behavior Inventory), with cognitive/somatic domain sub-scores calculated, and indicated if they had exercised or experienced sleep problems since injury. We grouped patients by injury season: summer months (June–August) vs. school year (September–May). 350 patients (14.4 ± 2.4 years old; 37% female; initial visit 8.8 ± 5.3 days post-concussion) were seen for care: 24% sustained a concussion during summer months, 76% during the school year. Lower cognitive (median = 7 [IQR = 1, 15] vs. 9.5 [4, 17]; p = 0.01), but not somatic (7 [2.5, 11] vs. 8 [4, 13]; p = 0.06), HBI scores were observed for patients injured during the summer. Groups were similar in proportion exercising (16% vs 17%) and endorsing sleep problems (29% vs 31%). After adjustments, sustaining a concussion during the summer predicted total (β=-3.43; 95%CI = −6.50, −0.36; p = 0.029) and cognitive (β = -2.29; 95%CI = −4.22, −0.36; p = 0.02), but not somatic (β=-1.46; 95%CI = −2.84, −0.08; p = 0.04), symptom severity. This design-based research (DBR) study investigated the following research question: How can the HyFlex instructional model be leveraged to create more accessible and equitable education for graduate students? To address this question, the researchers explored two education doctoral courses in the USA, with 37 participants for one semester. The essential elements of the intervention included the following: digital, multimodal tools; equity of online and face-to-face learning environments; and engagement in community. A mixed methods approach to data collection and analysis was utilised in accordance with the DBR framework, including inhibiting and enhancing factors of the intervention, modifications made, unanticipated outcomes, and progress towards the goal. This paper shares findings from a project that examined how schools serving marginalised communities facilitated students' substantive engagement. Through interviews with students, parents, teachers and school leaders, we determined that substantive engagement was supported by formal and informal strategies that enabled access to rich learning opportunities, the provision of welcoming school and classroom climates, and the enactment of pedagogies of care and school-wide programmes focused on substantive engagement. There were four key areas of substantive engagement: engaging curriculum and pedagogy, engaging school climate, engaging with learners, and engaging with communities. Strategies to support engagement included the removal of barriers to learning, such as assistance with breakfast or public transport, nurturing a positive school climate, providing support for ethnic groups and the delivery of alternative or flexible programmes. Drawing on the findings from five case studies, we propose four principles for substantive student engagement in complex contexts, which will be useful for school leaders and teachers who work in schools that serve marginalised communities. This study seeks to investigate academics' perceptions and experiences with traditional final examinations in engineering courses. An online survey of 40 academics was conducted to understand the academics' beliefs and rationale for the use of final examinations in their teaching practices. The survey was followed by in-person interviews with 11 academics to clarify the outcomes of the online survey. The results indicated that most academics considered the final examination as an effective and equitable way of assessing student knowledge and skills. However, the findings also showed that final examinations generally might not provide students with proper feedback, and traditional final examinations might not be effective in testing students' practical and soft skills required by industry. This study draws on the practice of digital storytelling (DST) to address the limited use of technology in middle school multilingual classrooms. Through critical and multiliteracy frameworks, DST can help create a more engaging and inclusive learning environment that supports the literacy development of multilingual learners (MLs). After reviewing and synthesizing empirical studies on DST as it applies to the middle school years, we provide a crosswalk focusing on four core areas: content, context, communication and language, and student identity. Cranberries have a long history of use in the prevention of urinary tract infections. Cranberry products vary in proanthocyanidin content, a compound implicated in preventing the adhesion of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) to uroepithelial cells. Testing is routinely done by cranberry product formulators to evaluate in vitro bacterial anti-adhesion bioactivity, shelf-life, and potential efficacy of cranberry products for consumer use to maintain urinary tract health. Hemagglutination assays evaluate the anti-adhesion bioactivity of cranberry products by determining how effectively the products prevent agglutination of specific red blood cells with E. coli expressing P-type and Type 1 fimbriae. The current study sought to improve upon an established anti-adhesion assay method by expanding the number of E. coli strains used to broaden potential in vivo efficacy implications and presenting results using photomicrographic data to improve accuracy and build databases on products that are routinely tested. Different lots of cranberry powder ingredient and two formulated products were tested independently for anti-adhesion activity using the established method and the improved method. Positive harmonization of results on the same samples using rigorous controls was achieved and provides the substantiation needed for the cranberry industry to utilize the improved, rapid in vitro testing method to standardize cranberry products for sufficient anti-adhesion bioactivity and maintain consumer confidence. This systematic literature review synthesises 49 studies exploring teacher professional development (PD) focused on the education of multilingual learners (MLs). Specifically, we examined PD design for in-service mainstream classroom teachers serving MLs in early elementary grades. We followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines for transparent reporting in systematic reviews, including the four phases of identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion. Findings show that although the content of PD has covered foundational literacy areas, such as vocabulary and comprehension, more attention is needed on integration of culture and MLs’ linguistic repertoires. Results also show that PD with positive outcomes is ongoing, collaborative, and includes multiple stakeholders. However, there is room for the inclusion of family and teacher voice. We conclude by arguing that future research on PD within the context of ML education should explore long-term impact of interventions on teachers and students and focus on leadership roles to expand instructional capacity for MLs. Demographic shifts and the growth of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are occurring simultaneously on college campuses. This study seeks to understand their intersection by focusing on age in DEI initiatives on college campuses. Findings from six focus groups suggest that age is not given much attention in DEI initiatives. Participants acknowledge the issue of age; but in general, they strive to keep other identities, like race and gender, in the forefront, especially in the face of low resources. Although founding and directing an independent research laboratory is often expected of faculty at American universities, there are several barriers to successful completion of this important task. There is little guidance in the literature regarding exactly how to go about starting a research laboratory. The guidance that exists for faculty often focuses on running research labs in the "hard sciences," such as biomedical science and engineering, leaving social and behavioral scientists out of such considerations. Additionally, smaller or teaching-focused universities often have little infrastructure or support for starting a research lab, so faculty at these institutions may not know where to begin. These barriers are significant concerns for junior faculty, who are often unprepared for the realities and challenges of starting a successful research lab while obtaining other milestones required for promotion and tenure. We present two examples of recently-formed gerontology research laboratories begun by junior faculty, one in the psychology department of a research university and one in public health at a teaching-focused university. Our case studies present the reader with specific examples, lessons learned, and guidance for starting their own gerontology research laboratory in higher education, whether as a physical or virtual space, as well as recommendations on maintaining its functioning during a global pandemic. Maltreatment survivors are at a heightened risk for revictimization during adulthood. Yet, existing work has specifically focused on sexual revictimization, and it is unclear what factors increase one's risk for revictimization more broadly. Posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), anger, and substance use have been identified as factors associated with sexual revictimization; the function of these variables is ambiguous in the broader revictimization framework. There is also a lack of understanding regarding the roles of the DSM-5 posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom clusters and revictimization. This study aimed to 1) examine the links between maltreatment and revictimization and three factors (i.e., PTSS, anger, and substance use), 2) determine whether there are indirect effects between maltreatment and revictimization through each factor, and 3) investigate whether PTSD clusters have indirect effects on the relationship between maltreatment and revictimization. The sample included 350 maltreated college women (Mage = 21.96, SD = 5.31; 54.2% White) from two universities. Findings indicated that maltreatment and revictimization were linked with PTSS (B = 4.65, B = 0.03, respectively). Only maltreatment was related to anger, B = 1.70, and revictimization was tied to substance use, B = 0.08. Only PTSS had an indirect effect on the link between maltreatment and revictimization (B = 0.13). Maltreatment was related to each of the four PTSD symptom clusters, but the clusters had no indirect effects on the association between maltreatment and revictimization. As overdose rates increase for multiple substances, policymakers need to identify geographic patterns of substance-specific deaths. In this study, we describe county-level opioid and psychostimulant overdose patterns and how they correlate with county-level social vulnerability measures. A cross-sectional observational study, we used nationwide 2016-2018 restricted access Centers for Disease Prevention and Control county-level mortality files for 1,024 counties. We estimated quartiles of opioid and psychostimulant overdose mortality and provided estimates of their association with county-level Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) percentile. There was high opioid and psychostimulant overdose mortality in the Middle Atlantic, South Atlantic, East North Central, and Mountain regions. The Central US had the lowest opioid and psychostimulant overdose mortality rates. Counties with higher SVI scores (i.e. higher social vulnerability) were significantly more likely to experience high opioid and high psychostimulant overdose (high-high) mortality. A 10-percentile increase in SVI score was associated with a 3.1 percentage point increase in the likelihood of being a high-high county (p < 0.001) in unadjusted models and a 1.5 percentage point increase (p < 0.05) in models adjusting for region. Our results illustrated the heterogenous geographic distribution of the growing concurrent opioid and psychostimulant overdose crisis. The substantial regional variation we identified highlights the need for local data to guide policymaking and treatment planning. The association of opioid-psychostimulant overdose mortality with social vulnerability demonstrates the critical need in impacted counties for tailored treatment that addresses the complex medical and social needs of people who use both opioids and psychostimulants. This contribution presents the results of a technical investigation on the pigments of William Burges' Great Bookcase (1859–62), preserved at the Ashmolean Museum. It is the first thorough material investigation of a remarkable piece of Gothic Revival painted furniture, notably an artwork by Burges, whose work has so far received little attention from a technical point of view. This study was developed during the Covid-19 pandemic, which significantly affected the planned research activities since the investigation relied extensively on collaborations with institutions within and beyond the University of Oxford. The disruption caused by the lockdown and other restrictions went far beyond any prediction and led us to redefine the project's outcome and methodology 'on the fly' while maintaining its overall vision. However, thanks to the timeliness of a substantial research grant received from the Capability for Collection Fund (CapCo, Art and Humanities Research Council), we could ultimately turn this research into a unique opportunity to test the potential of recently acquired instruments, namely the Opus Apollo infrared camera and the Bruker CRONO XRF mapping spectrometer. Therefore, besides reporting on the findings, this contribution outlines the strategy adopted and assesses the new equipment's capability for the non-invasive analysis of complex polychromies. Most threshold models to-date contain a single threshold variable. However, in many empirical applications, models with multiple threshold variables may be needed and are the focus of this article. For the sake of readability, we start with the Two-Threshold-Variable Autoregressive (2-TAR) model and study its Least Squares Estimation (LSE). Among others, we show that the respective estimated thresholds are asymptotically independent. We propose a new method, namely the weighted Nadaraya-Watson method, to construct confidence intervals for the threshold parameters, that turns out to be, as far as we know, the only method to-date that enjoys good probability coverage, regardless of whether the threshold variables are endogenous or exogenous. Finally, we describe in some detail how our results can be extended to the K-Threshold-Variable Autoregressive (K-TAR) model, K > 2. As academic libraries shift services to meet the changing needs of patrons after the COVID-19 pandemic, educational technologies and services to support them require updating. Patrons using technology that was once associated with hands-on learning and in-person interactions are preferring flexible and hybrid iterations. In this case study, the authors describe and analyze the pivot of three technology services at the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library in the post-COVID-19 environment. Technologies discussed include a multimedia studio, virtual reality (VR), and a three-dimensional (3D) printing service. This case study utilizes available usage stats and survey data to demonstrate and provide rationale for the changing strategy in services for each technology "hub." The multimedia studio has been dismantled in favor of the equipment being available for checkout, VR is now available in a staff-supported classroom, and a 3D printing service has been fully automated through an online submission platform. These examples, and the rationale behind changing them, can help offer ideas for other libraries to help find solutions that meet the demands of a changing learning environment. In a Guide Dog population, there is a higher return rate of handlers' second dog compared with any prior or subsequent dog pairings. This phenomenon is called Second Dog Syndrome (SDS). Qualitative studies have identified defining features of this syndrome in Guide Dog handlers; however, there has been no peer-reviewed study into the experience of SDS in companion-dog owners or handlers of other assistance dogs. As such, this exploratory study aimed to define the SDS experience in companion-dog owners and assistance-dog handlers. Ten participants, all women, were recruited to participate in focus groups for companion-dog owners (n = 5) and assistance-dog handlers (n = 5). Transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. SDS was characterized by a strong bond with the previous dog, ongoing bereavement related to the previous dog loss, negative emotions related to the successor dog, and inability to bond with them. This appeared to be due to comparisons made between the successor and previous dog and unmet expectations of the new dog. For companion-dog owners it was also characterized by a fear of getting hurt again; for assistance-dog owners it was an inability to trust the successor dog, differences in work ability, and a threat to their independence. Time since the loss of the previous dog, awareness of the phenomenon of SDS, and support from the community also influenced the SDS experience. One unexpected finding was that SDS was not exclusively linked to second-paired dogs and that it may be more aptly named "Successor Dog Syndrome." Given that poor outcomes associated with unsuccessful dog–owner bonding may result in relinquishment, this study provides an important first step to being able to quantify the experience of SDS to develop interventions in the future. Wine flavour is a critical driver of customer impression of quality associated with liking the wine and tendency to repurchase. However, winemaker and expert assessments poorly reflect customer impressions of wine flavour, and currently, available predictive capabilities are limited. This study developed predictive models for customer perceptions of Shiraz wine flavour, utilising the proportion of customer wine reviews mentioning a descriptor as the indicative measure to be predicted. To achieve this, two strategies were explored, which involved polynomial regression sourcing input terms from either: (1) volatile profiles directly, or (2) odour intensity (OI) values, produced via transformation of the volatile profiles using modified vector modelling (MVM). Neither strategy significantly outperformed the other (P = 0.834), however across the two strategies, a subset of 18 models from the 169 models generated had very good predictive potential (10-fold R² > 90%). The 18 models presented herein provide a novel capacity for winemakers to predict customer perceptions of their Shiraz wine prior to market launch, to guide a marketing strategy to maximise customer satisfaction and thereby product success. This paper examines the unintended consequences of emergency school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic and explores the impact of these closures on children and young people's United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and wider physical health rights. It addresses how States Parties should address and balance these rights during a crisis. It then contextualises the school closures, using global data mainly collated by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), exploring the direct health risk to children and young people from COVID-19 and the risk they posed to the wider community, finding both low. It then draws on findings from the Children and Young People's Commissioner, Scotland's COVID-19 Independent Children and Young People's Rights Assessment (ICRA) and wider literature identifying numerous unintended rights breaches, focusing on the rights breaches experienced by three particularly vulnerable groups of children and young people, namely those (i) at risk of physical or sexual violence; (ii) with additional support needs; and (iii) experiencing poverty and deprivation. The aim was to conduct a systematic review of the association between self-compassion and eating disorder symptoms and the efficacy of self-compassion interventions in reducing eating disorder symptoms. A systematic literature search was conducted on Web of Science, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Scopus, and CINAHL on 29 May 2023. The inclusion criteria were: a) available in English, b) published in a peer-reviewed journal, c) used valid measures of self-compassion and eating disorder symptoms, d) clinical eating disorder populations, and e) treatment with self-compassion intervention components. Exclusion criteria were: unpublished studies, dissertations, or study protocols. Study quality was assessed with the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklists. There were 15 studies (n = 991) examining self-compassion and eating disorder symptoms in clinical eating disorder populations, seven of which examined self-compassion interventions (n = 369). Higher self-compassion was associated with lower eating disorder symptoms. There was some evidence for the efficacy of self-compassion interventions in reducing eating disorder symptoms. Preliminary evidence indicates some support for self-compassion interventions; however, further high-quality randomised controlled trials are required with more diverse samples. (2) Previous meta-analyses suggest that self-compassion interventions are efficacious in reducing disordered eating in non-clinical and clinical populations. What this paper adds: (1) Self-compassion interventions may be helpful for clinical eating disorders. (2) Interventions focused on self-compassion may be particularly efficacious for women with binge eating disorder. Anderson's code of the streets (COS) model outlines one response to community violence exposure (CVE) in which individuals regard violence as an effective means to maintain respect and reduce victimization. Previous research suggests CVE, negative emotionality, and low social support may relate to the acceptability of violence. In a sample of 694 emerging adult undergraduate students (18–25 years, Mage = 20.72, SD = 1.85; 81.0% female; 57.1% White), the current study utilized latent profile analysis to derive profiles from CVE (i.e., direct, witnessing, hearing about), anger, and social support (friend, family). The relationships between these profiles and COS endorsement were then examined. A 4 class model emerged as the best fit: High CVE (5.0%), Low Support (16.7%), Moderate CVE and High Support (23.9%) and Low CVE (54.4%). Profiles significantly differed in relation to COS, with High CVE participants reporting the highest COS endorsement. The Low Support and the Moderate CVE and High Support participants reported moderate COS beliefs. The Low CVE participants endorsed the lowest levels of COS. Results showcase the importance of intervention efforts to bolster social support and reduce problematic anger, and prevention efforts aimed at decreasing CVE, which may reduce positive violence norms. Given the sensitive nature of COVID-19 beliefs, evaluating them explicitly and implicitly may provide a fuller picture of how these beliefs vary based on identities and how they relate to mental health. Three novel brief implicit association tests (BIATs) were created and evaluated: two that measured COVID-19-as-dangerous (vs. safe) and one that measured COVID-19 precautions-as-necessary (vs. unnecessary). Implicit and explicit COVID-19 associations were examined based on individuals' demographic characteristics. Implicit associations were hypothesized to uniquely contribute to individuals' self-reports of mental health. Participants (N = 13,413 US residents; April-November 2020) were volunteers for a COVID-19 study. Participants completed one BIAT and self-report measures. This was a preregistered study with a planned internal replication. Results revealed older age was weakly associated with stronger implicit and explicit associations of COVID-as-dangerous and precautions-as-necessary. Black and Asian individuals reported greater necessity of taking precautions than White individuals (with small-to-medium effects); greater education was associated with greater explicit reports of COVID-19-as-dangerous and precautions-as-necessary with small effects. Replicated relationships between COVID-as-dangerous explicit associations and mental health had very small effects. Implicit associations did not predict mental health but there was evidence that stronger COVID-19-as-dangerous explicit associations are weakly associated with worse mental health. This paper estimates a knowledge production function to study the effects of local spillovers on the patenting activity and new innovation sales of Chinese firms during a period marked by rapid economic reform. We show that local spillovers expected to arise between co-located firms in related industries encourages firm innovation outcomes, especially among firms that diversify their core competencies into new related (versus unrelated) technological domains. Exploiting the gradual and spatially uneven economic transitioning process as a quasi-natural experiment, we find that the positive effects of relatedness on firm innovation are significantly larger in size following more intense market-oriented reforms. The results are potentially relevant for policy-makers in transitioning economies, highlighting for the first time the importance of firms' own diversification process and market-oriented reforms for encouraging innovation-enhancing technological related spillovers. Conversation is challenging to measure. Quantitative and qualitative measures need to be sensitive to the conversation context, the purpose and the variable contributions of participants in order to capture meaningful change. Measurements also need to be consistent across independent raters. The reliability of global observational rating scales across differing sample lengths has previously been investigated. An investigation into the effects of sample length on inter-rater reliability using a behavioural frequency measure is a new field of research. This study reports on the inter-rater reliability of the Interactional Network Tool (INT), a behavioural coding system for use with group interaction data. It examines the effects of sample length on reliability using a refined coding system designed to improve the speed and efficiency of use in clinical settings. Fourteen video samples of group interactions for people with acquired brain injury were prepared for analysis. Two raters independently coded the films using the INT coding system. Individual code reliability was calculated using intra-class correlations (ICCs). Codes were combined to form a new coding structure. Reliability of the new codes was calculated using intra-class correlations across four sample lengths (5,10,15 and 20 minutes). A one-way analysis of variance was used to compare the means of the four sample lengths. Acceptable inter-rater reliability was achieved using the refined INT coding system. There was no difference between the four sample lengths. These findings indicate that trained clinicians using the INT in clinical practice can achieve a reliable measure of participation in a group interaction from short samples. Objective. Past research suggests that eating alone is associated with less social support and poorer physical health. The current study examines the comparative health and well-being of Hispanic/Latino(a/x) and non-Hispanic/Latino(a/x) students, with a focus on comparing self-reported well-being to the observed marker of social well-being that is eating alone. Participants. Undergraduate students from a college dining hall completed online surveys in exchange for a gift card. Methods. Participants completed measures of eating alone in the dining hall, food choices, social support, quality of life, and overall health. Results. Although, compared to their non-Hispanic/Latino(a/x) peers, Hispanic/Latino(a/x) students were much more likely to be eating with others, both groups reported similar levels of social support and life satisfaction. Furthermore, Hispanic/Latino(a/x) students reported poorer physical health and chose unhealthier meals. Conclusion. Although Hispanic/Latino(a/x) students appeared to be more socially connected than their peers, these connections did not translate to better well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the moderating mechanisms of generative concerns (perception of making contributions to others) between generative civic activities and mental health among middle-aged and older adults. A total of 1,109 community-dwelling adults aged over 45 were recruited through an online survey. Generative civic activities (political participation and volunteering), generative concerns (the Loyola Generativity Scale), and two outcomes of mental health (depressive symptoms and mental wellbeing) were measured. Linear regression models and simple slope analyses were used to probe the moderating effects of generative concerns, stratified by age (45–64 years and 65+). Generative activities, but not concerns, were associated with lower depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults. Generative concerns and activities were related to better mental wellbeing among middle-aged adults. Generative concerns moderated the associations between civic activities and depressive symptoms. Those with higher generative concerns but lower civic activities had higher depression scores. Conversely, a stronger reduction in depressive symptoms by engaging in civic activities was found only when individuals had greater concerns. No moderating effect was found on mental wellbeing. The positive effect of civic engagement on reducing depressive symptoms depends on generative concerns, particularly among older people and those with greater concerns. With a simple search, individuals can access vast amounts of information about their symptoms, medical conditions, and treatments. This has led to the emergence of a phenomenon known as "cyberchondria," which refers to excessive searching for health information online. While seeking health information can improve health literacy, cyberchondria can have negative consequences, such as increased distress and healthcare utilization. Security messages, as a form of information security awareness training, are designed to encourage individuals to make an informed security decision, reducing their susceptibility to online victimization. To date, no known study has assessed the effectiveness of security messages or whether the effectiveness of these messages varies based on the recipients' characteristics. Using a randomized controlled trial, this study tests the efficacy of security messages on reducing SMiShing victimization, then assesses whether thoughtfully reflective decision-making (TRDM) moderates the effect of these messages on victimization by launching simulated attacks against participants of the study. Findings reveal that neither security messages nor TRDM directly affect SMiShing victimization. However, security messages effectively prevent victimization when the message recipient has higher TRDM levels. The interaction between TRDM and security messages demonstrates the relevance of criminological theory and the importance of interdisciplinary scholarship in understanding how human behavior influences the effectiveness of cybersecurity practices. Recovery housing is an important resource for many in their recovery from alcohol and other drug use disorders. Yet providers of recovery housing face a number of challenges. Many of these challenges are rooted in stigma and bias about recovery housing. The ability to describe the service and purported mechanisms of action vis-a-vis an overarching framework, approach, or orientation could also go a long way in adding credence to recovery housing as a service delivery mechanism. Several aspects of social model recovery are often explicitly built or organically reflected in how recovery housing operates, yet describing recovery housing in these terms often does little to demystify key features of recovery housing. To more fully cement social model recovery as the organizing framework for recovery housing this article aims to: review the history, current status, and evidence base for social model recovery; comment on challenges to implementing the social model in recovery housing; and delineate steps to overcome these challenges and establish an evidence base for social model recovery housing. Researchers have recommended that youth athletes limit their practice volume to the number of hours/week that they are old in years. We examined sport perceptions, burnout, anxiety, and depressive symptoms among youth athletes who did and did not report playing more hours/week of organized sports than their age. Uninjured athletes aged 13–18 years old completed questionnaires documenting demographics, sport participation volume, health and injury history, depressive symptoms, anxiety, burnout, and sport perceptions during a pre-participation physical examination. We grouped participants as those who reported more hours/week in organized sports than their age (exceeds age/volume recommendation) vs. those who reported equal/less hours/week in organized sports than their age (meets age/volume recommendation). Of 161 participants, 21% (n = 33) were in the 'exceeds age/volume recommendation' group (age = 15.2 ± 1.3 years; 55% female; 18.7 ± 4.0 hours/week) and 79% (n = 128) were in the 'meets age/volume recommendation' group (age = 15.6 ± 1.2 years; 50% female; 10.2 ± 3.4 hours/week). A higher proportion of the 'exceeds age/volume recommendation' group agreed with the statement 'youth in my sport play too many games before college' than the 'meets age/volume recommendation' group (33% vs. 16%; p = 0.03). After adjusting for the effect of age, sport specialization level, and weight, exceeding age/volume recommendations was associated with the perception that youth in sports play too many games before college (aOR = 3.24; 95% CI = 1.26, 8.29; p = 0.01), while burnout (aOR = 0.99; 95% CI = 0.94, 1.06; p = 0.93), anxiety (aOR = 0.97; 95% CI = 0.84, 1.11; p = 0.65), and depressive symptoms (aOR = 0.90; 95% CI = 0.74, 1.10; p = 0.30) were not significantly related. Athletes who spend more hours in sport than their age appear to perceive their competition load during youth sports to be excessive. Coaches and providers should monitor athlete's training hours and perceptions of competition load to offer support and potentially prevent burnout development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

People have kept companion animals for millennia, a tradition that implies mutual benefits due to its persistence; however, scientific investigations present mixed results. Some research suggests pet owners are less lonely than non-owners, but other findings suggest pet owners have higher psychological distress. Research comparing owners with non-owners is limited, and methodological inconsistencies need to be addressed. This study investigated social support and wellbeing (positive functioning) in cat and dog owners, informed by social support theory, attachment, and social exchange theories. It was hypothesized that (1) pet support would predict wellbeing in addition to human support and (2) at least one aspect of pet–owner relationship quality would influence the relationship between social support and wellbeing. An adult sample of 89 cat owners and 149 dog owners (n = 238; 205 females and 33 males) completed an online survey comprising a demographics questionnaire, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Cat/Dog–Owner Relationship Quality Scale, the Psychological Wellbeing Scale, and Satisfaction with Life Scale. Social support measures included some demographics on theoretical grounds to measure the construct multidimensionally. Hierarchical and multiple regressions were conducted, and results indicated that both hypotheses were supported: having more pets significantly predicted greater psychological wellbeing in addition to human social support. Unexpectedly, perceived pet support significantly, positively predicted life satisfaction when perceived emotional closeness with pet was low. These findings indicate that pets may improve psychological functioning and that emotional closeness is an important moderating factor. A considerable number of children and adolescents suffer from mental health difficulties, yet a much smaller percentage of these students receive mental health services. Given the amount of time that youth spend at school, being able to offer mental health services at school is a logical solution. In this paper we present an innovative idea for increasing mental health services in schools through partnering with behavioral health training programs, such as social work, counseling, and psychology. The mutually beneficial nature of these partnerships is described and a framework for deciding what services are needed is offered. The article ends with a detailed analysis of logistical challenges and decisions regarding identifying potential clients, supervision, curriculum, scheduling, funding, confidentiality and records, competence, and consent. The primary aim of our study was to determine the attendance of postpartum visits stratified by race and if the COVID-19 pandemic affected racial disparities in postpartum visit attendance. We searched our labor and delivery records from July 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019 and from July 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020 and included patients who delivered liveborn infants. The final analysis was restricted to patients who identified as White or Caucasian only, Black or African American only, or Hispanic. We then performed joint tests on the logistic regression with an interaction term of race and year of delivery to determine the final model. The odds ratio of Black or African American and Hispanic patients attending a postpartum visit was 0.589 (95% CI 0.456, 0.760; P <.001) and 0.836 (95% CI 0.676, 1.034; P = 0.099), respectively, compared to White or Caucasian patients. The interaction term of race and year of delivery was not statistically significant. Black or African American patients at our hospital had a clinically and statistically significant lower utilization of postpartum visits compared to White or Caucasian patients and this disparity was not exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
