This study analyzes service failures and recovery impacts on group tours using choice experiments and conditional logit models. It assesses negative word-of-mouth likelihood based on failures in food outlets, travel agencies, and scenic spots, and recovery actions like apologies, refunds, and punishment. Results show forced purchases, itinerary changes, and food sanitation significantly influence negative word-of-mouth. Preferences for recovery measures differ among Chinese, Japanese, and South Korean tourists, with Chinese favoring punitive actions, Japanese and South Koreans preferring refunds, and South Koreans finding personal apologies more acceptable. Senior living is an emerging research topic among hospitality scholars. Drawing upon the theory of planned behavior, this study examines the determining factors of potential residents, Baby Boomers, moving into senior living communities. We developed a survey derived from expert interviews, and data (n = 400) were collected via Qualtrics. The results show that personal privacy and employee competency develop a positive attitude toward senior living; friends and church members are greater social influences than family members; and psychological preparation and being a decision maker improves seniors’ perception of behavioral control. The synergistic interaction indicates a sense of control over their life could further enhance the positive attitude toward Boomers’ decision to choose senior living. Although we have entered the new normal created by the COVID-19 crisis, few studies have offered guidance for the future of hospitality and tourism education. This study attempts to fill this gap by adopting two theories – curriculum theory and stakeholder theory. Thirty participants, consisting of hospitality and tourism students, faculty members, and industry professionals, were interviewed in focus groups. The results demonstrate curricula with a heavy emphasis on technology (artificial intelligence, virtual reality, or big data), marketing, culture/diversity, safety/crisis management, and entrepreneurship; and soft competencies focusing on creativity, self-confidence/positivity, self-care/wellness, critical thinking, leadership and teamwork. Many of these hard and soft skills reflect a greater need for new innovative business ideas and safety/health concerns in the post-COVID era. We hope these results serve as a foundation for educators and other stakeholders involved in setting plans and strategies for hospitality and tourism education in the years to come. The discourse of active aging, as introduced by the WHO, aims at optimizing older adults' opportunities for health, participation, and security that could eventually enhance their social integration and quality of life. Considering that even those with frailty could strive for active aging in the given circumstances, we examined the meaning of active aging in long-term care settings and care strategies to promote it based on the WHO's framework. We conducted interviews with a total of 35 participants. The interpretative analyses revealed that the activities taken place in LTCFs have various scopes depending on older adults' physical and cognitive functional ability, and it captures the forms of activities that go beyond its lexical meaning. This paper examines the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and academic performance among hospitality Master students. Using data on 60 hospitality Master students from an Australian University, EI scores, measured using the Trait Emotional Intelligence scale are regressed against self-reported grade point average (GPA) scores. The regression is significant, underlining that EI indeed plays an important role in academic performance. The four components of the Trait EI scale, namely Well-being, Self-control, Emotionality, and Sociability were distinguished, and each component was modeled as an independent driver of the GPA score. Of the four components, Emotionality was significant implying that hospitality Master students' ability to perceive and express emotions and use them to develop and maintain relationships is a critical predictor of GPA. Halls of fame can recognize and honor the contributions of organizational members and have been used widely across various fields, including sports, entertainment, business, and academia. Although the utility of a hall of fame is clear, much less is known regarding how to select the inductees. This study demonstrates a transparent, effective way to select honorees for a hall of fame using the example of the School of Hospitality Business Management at Washington State University. The process successfully selected 9 inaugural Hall of Fame inductees as part of the celebration of the 85th anniversary of the program. The results can serve as a guide for other hospitality programs considering a hall of fame or similar programs to honor alumni. Recommendations and future research directions are discussed. This study examines a model linking three facets of tourist involvement (“importance & pleasure,” “sign value,” and “risk probability & consequence”) with tourist experience (TE) and environmentally responsible behavior (ERB). Data were collected with a self-administered questionnaire in a convenient sampling approach from tourists visiting Nansha Wetland Park, China. In total, 308 valid questionnaires were obtained. The structural equation modeling technique was applied to data analyses. Of three tourist involvement (TI) facets, “importance & pleasure” was found to be the most salient predictor of TE, which in turn led to ERB. “Risk probability & consequence” was shown as a potent predictor of both TE and ERB. “Sign value” did not have any effect on either TE or ERB. Basically, TE served as a full mediator between “importance & pleasure” and ERB, and a partial mediator between “risk probability & consequence” and ERB. The purpose of this study is to identify types of adaptation strategies used by unskilled migrant workers living in South Korea as they acculturated to life in the country and to determine specific characteristics by acculturation patterns. To this end, a Q methodology was used. A total of fifty-nine statements were drawn through in-depth interviews with eight migrant workers and two South Koreans working in related organizations as well as from thirteen other studies, and four factor types of acculturation patterns were identified by conducting a Q sorting on thirty-eight subjects. Interpretation of the study revealed that the subjects used four types of adaptation strategies: accepted separation, compromising integration, conflict marginalization, and harmonious assimilation. The subjects in each type showed concrete socio-psychological adaptation strategies in response to South Korea’s unique culture and policies of discriminative exclusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the importance of hospitality internships being universally recognized, this study examines the salient impact of internal branding on hospitality student interns’ brand-supportive behaviors through the mediation of value congruence. This study reveals that internal branding has direct positive effects on all three brand-supportive behaviors (hospitality interns’ brand service performance, intention to work for the brand after graduation, and positive word of mouth) and indirect effects through value congruence on the two outcome variables (intention to work for the brand after graduation and positive word of mouth). This study contributes to the literature by enhancing researchers’ understanding of the influence of internal branding on a brand and assists hospitality practitioners with marketing and human resource management practices associated with student interns. Background:Several registries and centers have reported the results of renal biopsies from different parts of the world. As there are few data regarding the epidemiology of glomerulonephritis (GN) in South Korea, we conducted this study on renal biopsy findings during the last 20 years from a single center. Methods:Data for 818 patients who underwent renal biopsy at our center between 1992 and 2011 were collected retrospectively. All kidney specimens were examined with light microscopy (LM) and immunofluorescent microscopy (IF). Results:There were 818 cases of native kidney biopsies. In cases of primary GN, the most frequent type of renal pathology in adults (18–59 years) was mesangial proliferative GN (MsPGN, 34.5%) followed by IgA nephropathy (IgAN, 33.3%) and membranous GN (MGN, 8.8%). Indications in adults (18–59 years) were asymptomatic urinary abnormalities (75.3%) followed by nephrotic syndrome (19.8%) and acute kidney injury (AKI, 3.4%). Conclusions:Among 818 renal biopsy specimens, MsPGN and IgAN were the most frequent biopsy-proven renal diseases. MGN was the third most common cause of primary GN and lupus nephritis (LN) was the most common secondary glomerular disease. Our data contribute to the epidemiology of renal disease in South Korea. Objective:Gemigliptin is a selective DPP4 inhibitor used to treat type 2 diabetes. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics (PKs) of gemigliptin, rosuvastatin, and irbesartan monotherapies and combination therapies. Research design and methods:Randomized, open-label, three-treatment, six-sequence, three-period, crossover studies were performed on healthy male volunteers. The three treatments were: 50 mg gemigliptin alone; 20 mg rosuvastatin (part A) or 300 mg irbesartan alone (part B); and rosuvastatin or irbesartan with concomitant gemigliptin. Each drug was administered as part of once daily, 7 day, repeated dosing regimens with a 14 day washout period. Clinical trial registration:NCT01823133 (part A) and NCT01825850 (part B). Main outcome measures:The primary PK parameters – Cmax and AUCτ – were compared to the geometric mean ratios (GMRs) and 90% confidence intervals (90% CIs) that were determined for the combination therapies and monotherapies. Results:A total of 60 participants were administered the study drugs, and 52 participants (27 participants in part A; 25 participants in part B) were analyzed as part of the PK dataset. In part A, the GMRs (gemigliptin + rosuvastatin/gemigliptin) of the Cmax and AUCτ values of gemigliptin were 0.955 (90% CI = 0.874–1.044) and 1.023 (90% CI = 0.991–1.057), and those of rosuvastatin were 1.012 (90% CI = 0.946–1.084) and 1.086 (90% CI = 1.032–1.142), respectively. In part B, the GMRs of the Cmax and AUCτ values of gemigliptin were 1.046 (90% CI = 0.964–1.134) and 1.035 (90% CI = 1.005–1.065), and those of irbesartan were 0.966 (90% CI = 0.897–1.040) and 1.050 (90% CI = 0.993–1.111), respectively. The limitations of this study include its relatively short treatment period and small sample size, as only healthy participants were included. Conclusions:Gemigliptin does not affect the PK properties of rosuvastatin or irbesartan; also, rosuvastatin and irbesartan do not affect the PKs of gemigliptin. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This study was performed to produce a strong antibody against repeated peptides for a specific region of an antigen. Nine amino acids at C-terminal from human brainβ-tubulin III were selected as a target sequence since it is well known for a high conservancy of sequence and resistance to antibody production. The synthetic oligonucleotides had six bases (5′-CGAC—GT-3′, 5′-TC—CAGC-3′) appended at each end and were repeatedly linked and directly joined by ligase in the presence of restriction enzymes (AccI,AvaI) to allow for the construction of head-to-tail repeats. Ligated oligonucleotides containing more than 10-unit repeats were eluted from agarose gels and cloned into theAccI site of a modified pGEX expression vector. The cloned repeated target sequences were subsequently expressed in a bacterial system. A large amount of glutathione-S-transferase-fusion protein containing the unit repeats was purified by affinity chromatography on glutathione-agarose beads and injected into Balb/c mice to produce polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies (Abs). Total protein from several mammalian brains was extracted and utilised to test the quality of the generated Abs in immunoblot assays. The generated Abs specifically recognised the 55-kDa human brainβ-tubulin protein but not any other mammalian brainβ-tubulins. Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer has been traditionally used as a medicinal plant and has beneficial effects due to pharmacological properties. Although ginseng is thought to be protective under abnormal conditions, the effects of pretreatment with red ginseng (RG) extract on ischemic stroke have not been fully elucidated. We investigated the protective effects of RG extract after focal cerebral ischemia in mice. Crude RG extract (360 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally for 2 weeks. Mice were then subjected to occlusion of the middle cerebral artery for 1 hour, followed by reperfusion for 4 and 24 hours. Pretreatment with RG extract followed by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) resulted in significant reduction of oxidized hydroethidine signals in ischemic areas. At 4 and 24 hours after I/R, the number of 8-hydroxyguanosine and apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 (ASK1)-positive cells decreased in the ischemic penumbra as seen using immunofluorescent staining. Western blotting showed that RG efficiently attenuated the protein levels of activated ASK1 in the ischemic penumbra. Consequently, DNA fragmentation and the infarct volume were reduced by RG extract pretreatment 24 hours after I/R. Also, RG extract resulted in better performance in rotarod test after I/R. Thus, RG pretreatment demonstrates a protective effect at suppressing ischemia-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis in ischemic lesions. This research investigates, reports, and theorizes Yuhan-Kimberly's journey to establish its organizational lifelong learning program in Korea. Based on a four-year longitudinal study and the principles of grounded theory, we propose the notion of anticipative affordance to elaborate the process through which benefits derived from an organization's lifelong learning are created, interconnected, and amplified through the gradual and long-term building and accumulation of shared understanding and commitment. Main theoretical contributions derived from this study are threefold. First, the concept of anticipative affordance enhances our understanding about the key process and challenges related to organizational lifelong learning. Second, anticipative affordance serves as a bridge to synthesize the separation between the cognitive and situated aspects of learning. Third, our research empirically illustrates how collective benefits of organizational learning are actualized over time through the development of learning mechanisms and through the integration of its individual members' learning. This study was performed to investigate the effect of ethanol extract from Saururus chinensis (Lour.) Baill on liver function, plasma lipid composition and antioxidant system with high-fat diet for 4 weeks. Rats were divided into the following five groups; untreated control group (normal), treated with 0.5% SE (normal + 0.5% SE), high-fat group (high-fat), high-fat group treated with 0.1% SE (high-fat + 0.1% SE), or 0.5% SE (high-fat + 0.5% SE). Weight gains showed a tendency to decrease in rat with high-fat + SE. Plasma total cholesterol showed a tendency to decrease with ethanol extract from S. chinensis (Lour.) Baill. LDL-cholesterol contents were lower in ethanol extract group than that of control group. Aspartate amino transferase and alanine amino transferase activities were increased by high-fat diet, and were decreased by 0.5% SE. Lipid peroxide level showed a tendency to increase in high-fat diet group than that of normal group. In ethanol extract from S. chinensis (Lour.) Baill groups, lipid peroxide level decreased significantly and SOD activity was also decreased progressively. These results demonstrated that the ethanol extract of S. chinensis (Lour.) Baill lowered serum cholesterol levels, tissue lipid contents and accumulation of cholesterol in the rat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the influence of sourcing and relatedness on the integration of events embedded in simple stories. Participants read pairs of "breaking news stories" from either 1 or 2 news agencies that were believed to be from the Internet. The stories within each pair were either related by virtue of shared situational dimensions (e.g., same protagonist, same location, causal continuity) or were unrelated to one another. One third of the participants believed the news stories were from different online news agencies and were told to remember the source of each event, one third were not instructed to remember the source, and one third thought the events only came from 1 source. Priming data from a recognition task indicated that relatedness increased integration, whereas sourcing decreased integration. Heat shock may increase oxidative stress due to increased production of reactive oxygen species and/or the promotion of cellular oxidation events. Mitochondrial NADP + -dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDPm) produces NADPH, an essential reducing equivalent for the antioxidant system. The protective role of IDPm against heat shock in HEK293 cells, an embryonic kidney cell line, was investigated in control and cells transfected with the cDNA for IDPm, where IDPm activity was 6–7 fold higher than that in the control cells carrying the vector alone. Upon exposure to heat shock, the viability was lower and the protein oxidation, lipid peroxidation and oxidative DNA damage were higher in control cells as compared to HEK293 cells in which IDPm was over-expressed. We also observed the significant difference in the cellular redox status reflected by the endogenous production of reactive oxygen species, NADPH pool and GSH recycling between two cells. The results suggest that IDPm plays an important role as an antioxidant defense enzyme in cellular defense against heat shock through the removal of reactive oxygen species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents information on the first Asia-Pacific CHRIE (APac-CHRIE) Conference and annual meeting that was held on May 21-23, 2003 in Seoul, Korea. The conference was hosted by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) in collaboration with Yonsei University, Korea and organized by the Institute of Convention and Exhibition Management of Hallym University, Korea. The conference officially started with an inaugural plenary session at the Lotte Hotel in the afternoon of May 21, 2003. Dr. Kyung-Sang Kwon, Director General of Bureau of Tourism, South Korea; Professor Hai-Sik Sohn, Chairman of the Asia Pacific Tourism Association; Dr. Evangelos Christou, President of Euro-CHRIE; and Prof. Kaye Chon, President of APac-CHRIE each welcomed the delegates and stressed the goals of the APac-CHRIE conference. A 30-minute poster session began with various topics subsequent to the inaugural plenary session. Shortly after the poster presentations, the first concurrent paper sessions were held featuring four unique topics: emerging issues in hospitality education, emerging research in foodservice management, conventions and events tourism, and lodging management.

An introduction is presented in which the editor discusses various reports within the issue on topics including the use of social media as a career enhancement tool for hospitality students, perception of hospitality students towards diversity, and gender composition in U.S. hospitality programs.
