Early pregnancy loss, defined as pregnancy loss prior to 20 weeks’ gestation, occurs in about one in five pregnancies. Although there has been research on women’s experiences of healthcare and social support following miscarriage, research into workplace support is relatively limited. In this study, we explored women’s experiences of returning to work following early pregnancy loss, drawing on data from semi-structured interviews with 13 Australian women. Thematic analysis generated three main themes: returning to work too soon, decisions about disclosure and the importance of a flexible workplace. Findings revealed that return to work can be a difficult process to navigate, with many reporting feeling pressured to return to work. While disclosure of their miscarriage enabled women to feel supported by their colleagues and connect to those with a similar experience, they often found disclosure challenging. Flexibility with leave, return-to-work arrangements and role adjustments were highly valued and helped women return to work. Findings revealed that workplace context and culture were important in the extent to which women felt supported by their workplace. This suggests that there may be a need for structural workplace changes to improve women's experiences of returning to work following early pregnancy loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Customary forest tenure is under increasing pressure from various actors for economic, political, and environmental purposes. The erosion of customary forest tenure can impair societal nature relations, erode traditional practices, and contribute to environmental degradation. In the Mekong Region, customary forest tenure largely remains unprotected through national laws. This article presents a legal analysis examining the extent to which the legal frameworks of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Vietnam contain legal provisions for safeguarding customary forest tenure within different resource systems, agricultural land, swidden land and forests, drawing on Schlager and Ostrom's bundle of property rights. The legal analysis shows significant gaps exist in legal frameworks to safeguard customary tenure. We recommend that policies toward statutory recognition be developed from the ground up and consider the harmonisation between land and forest laws and relevant implementing ministries. Concepts and practices related to risk are central to people's experiences of the COVID-19 crisis and attempts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. Sociological perspectives and empirical research on risk and uncertainty have much to offer for insights into how people conceptualise and respond to health risks such those associated with this new pandemic: including identification of the geographical, political, socioeconomic and other contextual dimensions. In this article, we provide findings from a qualitative interview-based project on Australians' experiences of the first six months of the pandemic in 2020, including the national lockdown. A total of 40 adults from across Australia took part in a semi-structured telephone interview. Adopting a narrative analysis approach, we explored people's biographical, embodied, spatial and affective experiences in what we term their 'COVID-19 risk narratives'. We further identified the events and circumstances that contributed to people beginning to feel at heightened personal risk from COVID-19 or which helped them feel safe or less vulnerable. The findings highlight the roles of factors including media coverage, previous experiences with infectious disease, beliefs about personal health and immunity, the government's implementation of containment measures, observations of others' behaviours and experiences, interactions with healthcare providers, geographical location and concern for family members. We argue that surfacing the interplay of these dynamic complex and highly contextual forces and relationships is vital to understanding COVID-19 risk understandings and practices. Chronic health conditions represent a key challenge for contemporary public healthcare. Current policy promotes self-management support to reduce demands on health services and improve patients' health and wellbeing. Though there is emerging recognition that self-management is achieved in collaboration between health professionals and patients, how chronicity is managed in interaction remains relatively underexplored in research. In this paper we report on research examining how people are supported to self-manage their conditions through their healthcare encounters. We draw on observational data from consultations between people with multiple chronic health conditions and their healthcare professionals, and semi-structured interviews with both patients and professionals about these consultations. We illuminate points of disconnect between patients and health professionals and demonstrate how these disconnects unfold in self-management support interactions. We argue that self-management is temporally and socially situated, incorporating past, present and (anticipated) future experiences. However, there is a disjuncture between the temporal logics of self-management enacted by health professionals and the subjective temporalities of people's lived experience of chronicity. Health professionals focus on patients progressing toward optimistic futures but give less attention to the complexities of patient life histories that render self-management more difficult. For self-management support to be effective, we argue that health professionals need to consider the complexities of people's life histories and how these shape imagined futures. Policy guidelines, we argue, should attend to how relations between patients and professionals shape self-management support, and the historical and social factors that shape experiences of living with chronic conditions. The article discusses a study that examined group facilitators' and participants' experiences of and engagement with goal setting in long-term condition self-management group programmes. Highlights include patient-provider interactions in group and one-to-one settings, development of a coding framework where text from three data sources were coded into categories and subcategories, and the link between meaningful goals, increased motivation, and taking on responsibility.

First-person accounts of voice hearing are scarce. This research aims to explore the role of spirituality in the sense-making process of hearing voices. Five semistructured interviews explored experiences of spirituality and hearing voices. Qualitative data was analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). Three superordinate themes were identified: need for connection, values about self and identity, and making sense. The findings suggest a relationship between spirituality and voice hearing, and relate to the need for belongingness and self-identity. Acknowledging the sense making process and engaging in conversations about spirituality are implicated when providing clinical interventions for distressing voice hearing. Future research could explore further the differences between voices associated with spiritual experiences and "psychosis." [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractLegislation in the United States has increasingly led to limitations on what and how educators are able to teach in the classroom. These measures, often deemed divisive concept laws, can lead to a host of challenges for music educators, impacting student/teacher relationships, repertoire selection, pedagogical practices, and student and teacher safety and mental health, among other concerns. Furthermore, constriction of content can frame the music educator as a deliverer of curriculum wherein the educator may feel stripped of their professional agency. The purpose of this study was to explore how, if at all, music educators from four states considering or actively enacting divisive concept laws achieved agency in their unique contexts. Data included semi-structured interviews with eight music educators. Findings suggest that stakeholders responded to policies in varying ways, the language of policies played a significant role in how policies were understood and enacted, and participants found divisive concept laws as particularly challenging in the midst of broader deprofessionalization of teaching. Reproductive justice and gestational surrogacy are often implicitly treated as antonyms. Yet the former represents a theoretic approach that enables the long and racialised history of surrogacy (far from a new or ‘exceptional’ practice) to be appreciated as part of a struggle for ‘radical kinship’ and gender-inclusive polymaternalism. Recasting surrogacy as a dynamic contradiction in itself, full of latent possibilities relevant to early Reproductive Justice militants’ family-abolitionist aims, this article invites scholars in human geography and cognate disciplines to re-think the boundaries of surrogacy politics. As ethnographies of formal gestational workplaces, accounts of gestational workers’ self-organised resistance, and readings of the attendant public media scandals show (taking examples from India, Thailand, and New Jersey), there is no good reason to place these new economies of ‘third-party reproductive assistance’ in a ‘realm apart’ from conversations about social reproduction more generally. Surrogacy, I argue, potentially names a practice of commoning at the same time as it names a new wave of accumulation in which clinicians are capitalising on the contemporary - biogenetic-propertarian, white-supremacist - logic of kinmaking in the Global North. Ongoing experiments in the redistribution of mothering labour (‘othermothering’ in the Black feminist tradition) suggest that ‘another surrogacy is possible’, animated by what Kathi Weeks and the 1970s intervention ‘Wages Against Housework’ conceive as anti-work politics. In making this argument, the article revives the concept ‘gestational labour’ as a means of keeping the process of ‘literal’ reproduction open to transformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In many contemporary healthcare systems, individuals are expected to be rational actors – weighing up available knowledge and making choices about their healthcare needs. In the policy context, this has been most explicitly applied to the financing of healthcare where there is encouragement for the purchase of private health insurance. However, perceptions of public and private healthcare provision, knowledge about healthcare needs, and the types of services people choose, are far from straightforward. Drawing on Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, field, and capital, and a study of individual experiences of choice in Australian healthcare, we explore the knowledges used by people as they navigate through the healthcare system. Such navigation takes place in a milieu where authoritative medical knowledge intersects with knowledge from other sources, including the Internet and lived experience. However, our study reveals that navigation of healthcare is assisted most of all by the capacity to draw on 'system knowledge'. System knowledge takes two, sometimes overlapping, forms. First, acquired system knowledge is produced through drawing on experience, formal knowledge and the capacity to undertake research (primarily cultural capital). Second, assumed system knowledge enables navigation of the healthcare system through accessing and utilising networks of privilege (primarily economic and social capital). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, we examine the choice to use a complementary and alternative medicine product (St John’s wort) for the management of mental health risk. We draw on data from a study in which we conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 41 adults who self-reported depression, stress or anxiety, in Melbourne, Australia, in 2011. We identified three groups of users – regular St John’s wort users, whose use was continuous; irregular users, whose use was occasional; and non-users, who had stopped or were contemplating use. In each group, St John’s wort use centred around managing risk, taking control and self-management. Participants described a process of weighing up risks and benefits of different treatment options. They viewed St John’s wort as a less risky and/or safer option than antidepressants because they perceived it to be more natural, with fewer side effects. They saw their use of St John’s wort as a means of exercising personal control over mental health risks, for example, to alleviate or self-manage symptoms of depression. Their use of St John’s wort was also linked to perceptions of broader social risks including the stigma and shame of needing to use antidepressants. The findings deepen our understanding of notions of mental health risk by pointing to the importance of localised knowledge of risk in decision-making, and the ways in which perceptions of, and hence responses to, risk differ between groups. Women's experiences with metastatic breast cancer have received little research attention. We reviewed published articles (1984–2013) reporting research examining women's experiences of metastatic breast cancer (n= 33). Findings from quantitative studies were categorized into three broad areas: adverse consequences, satisfaction with health care providers, and strategies for living. Themes identified from qualitative findings include living as a social outsider; importance of hope; health and quality of life; positive experiences; experiences at end of life; and strategies for living. More research is needed to explore experiences of subgroups to appropriately respond to women's diverse care needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As gambling products have diversified so too have the ways in which the gambling industry has been able to target, reach and engage different sectors of the community. Limited research has explored the ways in which individuals conceptualize and respond to gambling marketing strategies. Semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted with 100 adults in Victoria, Australia, who had gambled at least once during the previous year. Participants described the multi-layered ways in which gambling was marketed and were concerned about the role of marketing in ‘normalizing’ gambling for some groups. Male participants felt ‘bombarded’ and ‘targeted’ by sports bet marketing. Most women and older men actively resisted gambling marketing strategies. Older women, younger men, moderate and high risk gamblers and those from low socio-economic backgrounds were particularly influenced by incentivization to gambling. The news media plays an important role in making visible and shaping public understandings of health and health risks. In relation to overweight and obesity, it has been suggested that the media is more likely to engage in alarmist reporting in a climate in which it is taken for granted that obesity is an 'epidemic'. This study analyses Australian media coverage of a report on overweight and obesity, Australia's Future 'Fat Bomb': a report on the long-term consequences of Australia's expanding waistline on cardiovascular disease, by one of Australia's leading health and medical research institutes. Our study found that the report was consistently framed across media outlets as showing that Australia is the 'fattest nation' in the world, having overtaken the Americans. This is despite the fact that the Fat Bomb study did not include international comparisons and was based only on data from middle-aged Australians. Because reports of increasing rates of obesity had already been widely covered in the media, the press needed to find a new way of signifying the problem, which was provided by comments made by its lead author in publicising the report. Consistent with previous research, there was a notable absence of critical commentary on the study and a failure to test the claims of its lead author. We conclude that this reporting could have contributed to a policy environment in which the perceived threat of obesity is deemed to be so great that efforts to contain it may be subjected to less scrutiny than they warrant.
