This article studies the coupling between prescribed thermal oscillations in the surface of a micro-cylinder and vortex shedding. We deal with the unsteady, laminar, compressible flow regime where the aerodynamics forces have a periodic behavior. It is shown that appropriate spatial and time-dependent temperature oscillations on the surface of the micro-cylinder create a resonance that controls the amplitude and frequency of both lift and drag coefficients. In practice, what we study is a mechanism to modulate the amplitude and frequency of mechanical loads of aerodynamics origin in a micro-structure by using surface temperature fluctuations as the control parameter. This article studies the effect that either heat release or heat extraction from a microcylinder has on the vertical and horizontal aerodynamic forces that are generated as a consequence of vortex shedding phenomena. The flow is assumed to be 2-D, unsteady, compressible (Mach number in the range 0.2 to 0.4), and laminar (Reynolds number in the range 150 to 200). This flow regime could reasonably be achieved, as previous studies published in the literature show, in the microscale. The results obtained suggest that it is feasible to exert a significant control on the aerodynamic forces by using the heat transfer rate from the microcylinder as the control parameter.
