Abstract

Current welfare scholarship lacks an analysis of how caseworkers discuss sexuality-related issues with clients. Seventy-two of 232 transcribed welfare interviews in three states included discussion of reproductive decisions and relationships. Overall, caseworkers’ language reflected negative myths regarding African American women’s sexuality and motherhood. By virtue of their status as welfare recipients, regardless of their individual races, clients were placed into racialized myths through workers’ talk. This analysis demonstrates that though not present in every welfare interview and often veiled in bureaucratic language, negative ideas about poor women’s sexuality persist in welfare policy and are deeply embedded in its day-to-day implementation. 2. Lesbians and Gay Men in the Country: Practice Implications for Rural Social Workers.

Abstract

Lesbians and gay men experience discrimination and inappropriate treatment from social workers and other mental health professionals because of their sexual orientation. The two largest social work organizations-the National Association of Social Workers and the Council on Social Work Education-each have taken stands encouraging the protection of civil rights and prohibiting discrimination against gay men and lesbians. Research, however, has indicated that social workers, more so than other mental health professionals, have homophobic reactions to gay people. This article addresses issues experienced by lesbians and gay men living in rural areas. The socio-cultural context of rural life and common issues of gay men and lesbians are explored. Implications for practice, including the need to take an affirmative stance when working with gay people, are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
