Background: Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is one of the life-threatening complications of pregnancy, the prevalence of which has increased in parallel with the caesarean section rate. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of mothers with PAS who have also experienced maternal near miss. Methods: The participants of this study included 8 mothers who had experienced near miss due to placenta accreta during the past year, as well as two husbands and two health care professionals. Data collection was done using face-to-face, in-depth virtual and in-person interviews. In this qualitative study, the interpretive phenomenological analysis approach was used to analyse the data. Results: The superordinate theme that emerged from the lived experiences of the studied mothers is 'Living in a vacuum', which was derived from 3 main themes. The theme of 'distorted identity' is related to the mothers' experience of losing the uterus as a symbol of femininity and nostalgia for the former self. The theme of 'exacerbated exhaustion' indicates the burnout and fatigue perceived by these mothers and has dimensions far beyond the exhaustion caused by performing parenting duties. The third theme, 'a threatened future', reflects these mothers' vague image of the future in terms of health, preservation of life, and the continuation of living together with the husband. Conclusions: It seems that mothers with PAS need to be covered by integrated and well-organised psycho-social support from the time they are diagnosed with the complication until long after delivery due to the high potentiality of maternal near miss. Background and aims: Hemodynamic instability during postreperfusion syndrome remains the most significant concern for transplantation teams. Various strategies have been investigated in an attempt to reduce the occurrence of postreperfusion in liver transplantation, including the use of mannitol as a scavenger of free radicals and inflammatory mediators. The study examined mannitol intraoperative antioxidant effect on reperfusion hemodynamic events during living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Methodology: This prospective randomized controlled trial divided 60 participants with endstage liver disease into two groups of 30 participants each. The mannitol group was administered 1 g/kg of mannitol (20%) in a 500-mL labeled bottle (solution A); the control group received the same amount of normal saline (0.9%) in a 500-mL labeled bottle (solution B). The primary outcome was mean arterial pressure (MAP) postreperfusion. Secondary outcomes were recorded after reperfusion: cardiac output (COP), systemic vascular resistance (SVR), the amount of vasopressor administered, central venous pressure (CVP), and urine output (UOP). This study received ethics committee approval (R 42/2022) and was registered at clinicaltrials. gov (NCT05277623). Results: The MAP parameters were significantly lower in the control group, with MAP<60 mm Hg in 93.3% of the control group versus 40% of the mannitol group (p 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference regarding SVR (p 0.001). Norepinephrine levels were lower for the mannitol group compared with controls (p = 0.003). As regards COP, CVP, and UOP there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: Mannitol attenuates the postreperfusion syndrome during LDLT. Market sociology research has accounted amply for the importance of material devices in shaping markets. In contrast, the influence of biological entities (such as parasites, soil, and food) on market agencing has barely been considered. This article shows the relevance of covering this matter specifically. To do so, the authors refer to their analyses of the production and sales practices of organic vegetable market actors in France. Based on descriptions of four situations, they show that the biological processes involved in the cultivated ecosystems and agricultural produce itself influence the market agencing processes that these actors carry out. Based on these first observations, they propose four generic statements that clarify what considering the action of biological entities involves in terms of theory and identify avenues for future research. Based on autoethnographic observations and phenomenological descriptions of everyday life, this article develops a theory about the connection between challenging housing experiences and the lockdown situation during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. A special focus is placed on living in community, i.e. living permanently together with other people. The reorganisation of spatial routines and the bundling of these in the flat led to the development of new methods of everyday life in terms of work, leisure and social behaviour. With the addition of theoretical role considerations, it is shown that the central challenge of life in the lockdown presents itself as a spatial crisis of role fulfilment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since college, La Puente, CA has been the focus of my research and activism from bilingual education, sanctuary to by-trustee area school board elections. As a graduate student in the 1990s, I returned to live and research in this city of my childhood and where my immigrant grandparents eventually moved to in the 1950s from Nicaragua and Sicily. Rooted in home lessons, research experiences, participation in community struggles, and informed by Chicana/Latina and other women of colour feminist methodologies, this piece uses storytelling and poetry to reflect on the politics and possibilities of researching where we live. In particular, it highlights the epistemological and methodological pushback, along with the benefits and lessons learned over a life course of learning from teachers, becoming neighbours, and studying educational inequalities. Unique to my Latina feminist approach are the enduring relationships that have unfolded over the course of three decades of being able to (re)search, learn, live, and organize in community. Departing from Aimé Césaire's striking proposition that The End of the World is the only thing in this world that is worth beginning, this article sets out to explore some of its implications as a counter-apocalyptic gesture that renders apocalypse an immanent event: the end of some world in this world. Probing the speculative force of Césaire's counter-apocalyptic proposition, the article suggests that it can trouble one of the more insidious powers of Anthropocene stories: the way in which, by conflating the end of Euro-American extractive ways of living with the end of everything as such, such stories reduce the plural interplay of immanent values which sustain divergent modes of living and dying well to sheer matters of "survival," thereby determining what is vital to life, and how lives worth living and deaths worth living for are to be defined. Weaving together philosophical experimentation with a story of other modes of living and dying inside and despite ecological turmoil, the article takes up the notion of "cosmoecology" as a way of experimenting with plural value-ecologies of living and dying on a heterogenous Earth. The genus Palusphaera Lecal-Schlauder emend. R.E. Norris is a distinctive modern coccolithophore that accommodates monomorphic, monothecate coccospheres with one type of spine-bearing heterococcoliths. Having examined a set of scanning electron microscopy images from our collections, we were able to demonstrate that four distinct species of Palusphaera exist in the modern oceans, including the type species Palusphaera vandelii, an informally proposed form, Palusphaera sp. 1 (type robusta) that is herein taxonomically ratified as Palusphaera crosiae sp. nov., and a distinctive morphotype, which is formally described as Palusphaera bownii sp. nov. Biometric analyses and observations on the morphologies of numerous P. vandelii specimens revealed the existence of a further form, and its commonly distinguished coccolith morphotypes are therefore taxonomically separated from Palusphaera vandelii and established as a discrete species, Palusphaera probertii sp. nov. In spiritual care, demented people also present symptoms reminiscent of those often encountered during an analytical cure in certain psychoses and in neuroses involving narcissism or melancholia: that is, some psychic indifference toward the processes of credere and transfer, and love as such. Clinics devoted to the spiritual care of people with dementia question the role of the credere and love in their most crucial aspects for psychic health. How and why do these patients fall in love? A study of the clinical implications of these questions in relation with observations gathered among people suffering from severe dementia should allow us a better understanding of the meaning of soul, consciousness, and cognition. In the 25 years since narrative inquiry emerged as a social science research methodology, it has been rapidly taken up in the social sciences. In what is sometimes called a "narrative revolution," researchers with diverse understandings have co-opted the concept of narrative inquiry and used narrative inquiry or narrative research to name their methodology. In this paper, we lay out more clearly the ontological and epistemological commitments that underlay the methodological commitments of narrative inquiry. Within narrative inquiry, experience is viewed narratively and necessitates considerations of relational knowing and being, attention to the artistry of and within experience, and sensitivity to the overlapping stories that bring people together in research relationships. Working within the relational three-dimensional narrative inquiry space with dimensions of temporality, sociality, and place, we attend to the living, telling, retelling, and reliving of stories of experience. Living citizenship emerging from reflection on an international educational partnership makes a unique contribution to the field and importantly fulfils the British Educational Research Association aim of improving educational practice for the public benefit. This paper explores the conceptual framework of ‘living citizenship’ as a means for developing international continuing professional development through action research projects. Adapting Whitehead’s living educational theory approach to action research, living citizenship supports and problematises international educational partnerships through the influence of enabling participants as critically active citizens. Such pro-active fieldwork links the values and objectives of social justice and knowledge exchange to proffering educational change within authentic international continuing professional development professional learning environments. In this paper, we report experimental measurements of normal adhesive force versus body displacement for living Tokay geckos (Gekko gecko) adhered to Poly(methyl meth acrylate) (PMMA) or glass surfaces. We have measured the normal adhesive force needed for reaching the gecko detachment. Atomic force and scanning electron microscopies are used to characterize the surfaces and feet topologies. The measured safety factors (maximum adhesive force divided by the body weight) are 10.23 on PMMA surfaces or 9.13 on glass surfaces. We have observed minor and reversible damage of the gecko feet caused by our tests, as well as the self-renewal of the gecko adhesive abilities after the moult. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This paper reviews continuity theory as it applies to the field of ageing and reports the findings of a qualitative study aimed at understanding the personal meanings of ageing and well-being from the perspective of oldest-old women. Transcribed ethnographic interviews of 23 Caucasian and African-American community-dwelling women over the age of 85, who live in the midwestern United States, were analysed through the combined theoretical perspective of symbolic interactionism [1] and continuity theory [2, 3]. The women's communication about ageing and well-being leads the researchers to conclude that personal competence in the "feminine sphere" is key to understanding older women's health beliefs and behaviours in late life. Findings also point to the importance of occupational competence as a predictor of well-being in late life. This study underscores the importance of public communication of self and the role of occupational therapists in facilitating alternative visions of a meaningful occupational self. The aim of this study is to analyse the ways in which individuals describe the experience of moving to and living at sheltered housing. Fifty-nine randomly selected elderly persons living in sheltered housing participated in semi-structured interviews. Each individual's narrative regarding their experiences in relation to their new life situation was analysed using a phenomenological approach in order to organize into themes the qualitatively different experiences which were disclosed. The analysis of the interviews showed that moving to sheltered housing meant for a majority of participants that their self-image changed from being self-reliant and independent to becoming dependent and perceiving themselves and their care to be a burden. After having lived at sheltered housing most of the participants expressed they were satisfied with the somatic care they received. However, the analysis also suggests that for some of the participants there are existential issues involved related to mental well-being which need to be attended to. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) is one cause of chronic illness and disability in childhood. Traditional clinical assessment of clients with JCA include objective measures of joint deformity, joint swelling, range of motion, duration of morning stiffness, pain, walking speed, running speed and muscle strength. In many instances, these traditional measures have little or no significance or relevance to paediatric clients and their parents whereas functional skills used in everyday living are more likely to be meaningful. Measures of physical, social, and psychological functioning ensure a comprehensive health assessment. Responsible occupational therapy assessment and management of paediatric clients diagnosed with JCA requires the use of reliable, valid and sensitive measures of function. Several instruments are now available which measure a child's or adolescent's functional abilities. In this paper, JCA and the impact of JCA on functional development are reviewed. As well, seven functional assessment tools designed for use with paediatric clients with JCA which occupational therapists can use in their clinical practice will be appraised. The various characteristics of these tools are discussed in order to assist practitioners and researchers in selecting thefunctional instrument which best meets their needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within the framework of the gerontological and geriatric population studies in Göteborg, Sweden, H70, 617 85-year-old people were studied in a cross-sectional study. The purpose was to describe disability in activities of daily living (ADL) and how it is related to visual impairment, focusing on age-related macular degeneration (AMD). People with visual impairment, especially those with AMD, were found to be more dependent on help in both personal activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living compared with elderly persons with normal vision. The proportion of participants with disability in ADL and the relative risk of developing ADL dependence increased with the decrease in visual acuity (VA). However, the relationship between ADL and VA was weak, implying that people adapt to the consequences of the disease, although to different degrees. The results indicate that early detection and intervention might be essential to improve the odds for successful rehabilitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
