Black carbon (BC) mass concentration from internal combustion engines can be quantified using a variety of different BC measurement techniques. We compare the relative response of several commercial instruments with different measurement principles to different types of marine exhaust emissions. Exhaust samples were generated using a high-speed 4-stroke marine diesel engine at various engine operating conditions from low to high engine loads. Three different fuel types—diesel, distillate marine oil grade A (DMA) and intermediate fuel oil (IFO)—were used to generate soot particles with a wide range of physical, chemical and optical properties. Based on the standard deviation of the results at all engine conditions evaluated in the present study, the overall spread between the instruments was 24% for diesel, 30% for DMA and 37% for IFO samples. For samples with extremely high organic content (at 10% engine power), the agreement was poor and the standard deviation of the mass concentrations estimated from different instruments was 50% for diesel with OC/EC ≈ 45 and 72% for DMA with OC/EC ≈280. For IFO particles, more scattered mass concentrations were reported by different instruments at all engine loads, possibly due to very complex chemical composition and different optical properties in comparison with well-characterized soot particles. Water/steam direct injection is an effective method to lower emissions and improve the power of engines by using waste heat recovery (WHR). The parameters of water injection (WI) and steam injection (SI) were analyzed at compression stroke on the effect of brake power and emissions in marine engines, including injected timing, mass, and temperature. The results demonstrated that NOx emissions were substantially reduced by using WI method. However, brake power was also decreased. The SI method not only decreased NOx emissions but also improved brake power. The NOx emissions were ascended with increasing temperature and delaying injected timing of water. Opposing trends were found for SI method. The injected mass has a large effect on power and emissions compared with the influence of temperature and timing. The NOx emissions can be reduced by 72.8% with 2.08% power loss when the 20 g of water was injected into the cylinder at −50 °CA, 15 bar and 400 K. The NOx emissions can be reduced by 38.9% with 24.7% power improvement when the same mass of superheated steam with 500 K of temperature was injected into the cylinder. For accurately analyzing the emission performance of dual-fuel engine, an experimental scheme was designed based on response surface methodology, and the central composite design was applied to this study. Speed and load were used as the influencing factors, and NOX, CO, CO2, and HC were the corresponding responses. Data of dual-fuel engine emissions were utilized to set up mathematical model to analyze the emission characteristics of engine. Results of data analysis were found to match the original engine's emissions. The significance of the model test showed that P-values of mathematic model are less than 0.05, which verified the validity of the designed model. Speed of 800 r/min and load of 64% were found to have better emission performance with higher desirability of 65.4% for the tested engine. Corresponding emissions were 0.16% of CO, 3.97% of CO2, 463.92 ppm of NOX, and 224.27 ppm of HC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The awareness of black carbon (BC) as the second largest anthropogenic contributor in global warming and an ice melting enhancer has increased. Due to prospected increase in shipping especially in the Arctic reliability of BC emissions and their invented amounts from ships is gaining more attention. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is actively working toward estimation of quantities and effects of BC especially in the Arctic. IMO has launched work toward constituting a definition for BC and agreeing appropriate methods for its determination from shipping emission sources. In our study we evaluated the suitability of elemental carbon (EC) analysis by a thermal-optical transmittance (TOT) method to marine exhausts and possible measures to overcome the analysis interferences related to the chemically complex emissions. The measures included drying with CaSO4,evaporation at 40–180ºC, H2O treatment, and variation of the sampling method (in-stack and diluted) and its parameters (e.g., dilution ratio, Dr). A reevaluation of the nominal organic carbon (OC)/EC split point was made. Measurement of residual carbon after solvent extraction (TC-CSOF) was used as a reference, and later also filter smoke number (FSN) measurement, which is dealt with in a forthcoming paper by the authors. Exhaust sources used for collecting the particle sample were mainly four-stroke marine engines operated with variable loads and marine fuels ranging from light to heavy fuel oils (LFO and HFO) with a sulfur content range of <0.1–2.4% S. The results were found to be dependent on many factors, namely, sampling, preparation and analysis method, and fuel quality. It was found that the condensed H2SO4+ H2O on the particulate matter (PM) filter had an effect on the measured EC content, and also promoted the formation of pyrolytic carbon (PyC) from OC, affecting the accuracy of EC determination. Thus, uncertainty remained regarding the EC results from HFO fuels. Implications: The work supports one part of the decision making in black carbon (BC) determination methodology. If regulations regarding BC emissions from marine engines will be implemented in the future, a well-defined and at best unequivocal method of BC determination is required for coherent and comparable emission inventories and estimating BC effects. As the aerosol from marine emission sources may be very heterogeneous and low in BC, special attention to the effects of sampling conditions and sample pretreatments on the validity of the results was paid in developing the thermal-optical analysis methodology (TOT).
