Interprofessional collaboration between clinicians, interpreters, and translators is crucial to providing care for consumers with limited English proficiency. Interprofessional training for these professions has been overlooked outside of the medical field. This study investigated whether face-to-face training for speech pathologists, interpreters, and translators improved their knowledge, confidence, practice, and attitudes to engage in interprofessional collaboration. It also examined whether single-profession training for speech pathologists can produce similar training outcomes when delivered to multiple healthcare professions. Thirty interpreters and translators (30 training), 49 speech pathologists (27 training, 22 control), and a mixed group of 24 clinicians from eight professions (16 training, 8 control) completed surveys before, after, and two months after their respective training event. Training outcomes were similar across cohorts. Knowledge and confidence improved and were maintained after two months. Attitudes toward interprofessional collaboration were positive despite perceptions of challenge, and this was largely unchanged after training. Intent to implement optimal practices after training was greater than self-reported practices two months later. While years of professional experience did not affect training outcomes for clinicians, knowledge improvement for interpreters was associated with having less professional experience. Findings highlight the need to reevaluate service planning, policy, and workforce development strategies alongside foundation level training to deliver effective interprofessional education for clinicians, interpreters, and translators in healthcare settings. Purpose: There is limited information regarding the nature of dysphagia and feeding difficulties following alkali ingestion injury to inform multidisciplinary intervention. The aim was to describe the history and nature of chronic dysphagia and feeding difficulties in two children following severe alkali ingestion injury. Methods: Medical records, primary caregiver report, and clinical assessment were used to compile detailed case histories and assess current dysphagia and feeding skills. Results: Both cases demonstrated heterogeneous oral motor and feeding outcomes, including delayed oral motor skills, restricted dietary variety, and difficult mealtime behaviors that contributed to protracted recovery of age-appropriate PO intake. Both children required ongoing diet and/or fluid modification and supplemental non-PO feeding via gastrostomy at the time of review, that is, 2-year post-injury. Conclusions: Recovery from dysphagia post-alkali ingestion is protracted and complex. Dysphagia, delayed oral motor skills, and difficult mealtime behaviors may persist secondary to ingestion injury and its associated complications. These cases highlight the importance of considering early referral for feeding assessment and intervention to assist children and families with recovery. AbstractPurposeMethodResultConclusionNavigating the feeding journey of medically complex infants on long-term high flow nasal cannula support can be challenging for caregivers, especially given inconsistencies in clinical practice for oral feeding on high flow nasal cannula support. The aim of this study was to explore the perspectives of caregivers who have experienced this journey, to inform best practice care.This study used a generic qualitative inquiry approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven caregivers of children who had been on long-term high flow nasal cannula support as infants during 2021. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to generate meaning-united stories.All caregivers reported oral feeding difficulties that persisted beyond hospitalisation, resulting in demanding mental loads and care arrangements. Caregivers described how these difficulties were often exacerbated by complex medical needs and the strategies they experimented with to support oral feeding. Caregiver’s experiences in the healthcare system were characterised by inconsistencies in care pathways and variable access to specialist feeding services. The importance of a collaborative relationship with healthcare professionals and a conducive hospital environment were also highlighted.The oral feeding journey for families with infants on long-term high flow nasal cannula support was characterised by multifaceted challenges and implications.
