This study looks to unearth bigoted ideas among White students in education classes at a large land-grant University. This research utilises Critical Whiteness in a narrative format to elicit 14 White education students' history of bigotry and its effect on their behaviour. Their stories highlight how White families and their friends talk about people of colour and members of the LGBTQ community in their White circles. While Whiteness studies traditionally focus on the discrimination against people of colour, this study found that many White students also talk about sexuality, class, and gender as necessary components to their White identity development. The strong bigoted views against members of the LGBTQ community by many of the students' families and even themselves warrant discussion of Whiteness as an intersection of multiple identities. Our research advances what is known about the urban portion of the Latino diaspora, focusing on the extent to which Hispanic country-of-origin groups have spread throughout metropolitan America. Analyzing 1990–2010 census data for the 7 largest origin groups, we find that all 7 have become more evenly dispersed across metro areas, with group shares declining in primary gateways and increasing in other types of destinations. At the same time, Dominicans and Cubans remain highly concentrated in New York and Miami, respectively, and certain pairs of groups (e.g., Mexicans and Dominicans) continue to inhabit different metropolises despite a modest trend toward convergent settlement among most pairs. All groups have experienced some growth in exposure to ethnoracial diversity, particularly in primary gateway settings. However, Mexicans are less exposed than any other origin group to African Americans. The variation in our results by group attests to the delicate balance between the forces driving spatial concentration and dispersion. We conclude that multiple diasporas are underway rather than a single, uniform one. This pattern has relevance both for diversity within local Hispanic communities and for relations between Hispanics and other panethnic populations, most notably Whites and Blacks. Sourcing innovation externally and being able to collaborate are the keys to success in the "flat world" that Thomas Friedman has written about. The challenge continues to be how to identify and bring together the right resources to transform technology into a form that will enjoy a societal and economic benefit--bridging academic and the for-profit communities. Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the developed world. It is grossly divided into small cell and nonsmall cell types. Depending on the stage at diagnosis, the principal means of treating nonsmall cell lung cancer are surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. However, even when it is diagnosed at an early stage, the progression-free and overall survival rates have been disappointing compared with other cancers. In recent years, there have been a number of developments in the chemotherapeutic options for nonsmall cell lung cancer. Given the critical role that workshops play in the education and continuing education of marriage and family therapists, it is essential that attention be turned to evaluating these events. This paper reports on a preliminary investigation into how selected presenter and participant factors influence workshop evaluations. The results suggest that workshop participants generally concur on ratings of workshops, but that their ages and AAMFT membership status influence their ratings of conferences taken as a whole. In addition, presenters were found to have an unexpectedly accurate sense of how their workshops were rated. Future research directions are suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Selected characteristics of twenty‐seven confirmed cases of physical child abuse requiring hospitalization were compared with 105 confirmed cases of physical abuse not requiring hospitalization. Results indicate that there is a significant relationship between the age of the abused child and whether or not that child was hospitalized. Children under the age of three were most likely to be hospitalized as a result of abuse. Sex of child, total number of children in the family, age of the alleged perpetrator, sex of alleged perpetrator, and relationship of child to the alleged perpetrator were not found to be significantly related to hospitalization of the child. Interest in the nature and causes of family violence in the United States has grown tremendously in recent years. Straus has reported a common factor analysis of the Conflict Tactics (CT) Scales he designed to assess three aspects of conflict among family members. To evaluate the CT Scales independently, the authors administered the scales to adolescents in families randomly selected from a rural southeastern Kansas community and from the city of Wichita, Kansas. The rural group included 47 males and 36 females, average age 15.1 years, SD = 2.1; the urban group included 53 males and 45 females, average age 15.8 years, SD = 2.1.
