Saline and alkaline habitats of the Okha coastline, Gujarat, India, were explored for the diversity of actinobacteria. Based on the phenotypic and genotypic heterogeneity, nine haloalkaliphilic actinobacterial strains were characterized and identified. The PCR amplification of 16S rDNA using universal and genus-specific primers corroborated the trends that emerged through cultural and physiological characterization. Streptomyces was the most abundant genus amplified with the Streptomyces-specific primers (StreptB/E, StreptB/F), whereas other actinobacterial strains were amplified by the universal primers U1 and U2. Further molecular diversity was investigated by the gradient PCR-DGGE as a fingerprinting tool that generated group-specific DGGE patterns. Based on the nucleotide homology and phylogenetic analysis, strains OK-1 and OK-2 were identified as Streptomyces somaliensis. At the same time, OK-3 and OK-7 were detected as Streptomyces sp., while OK-5, OK-6, OK-8, OK-9, and OK-10 belonged to Nocardiopsis alba. Further, the cluster analysis using the UPGMA method generated 3 clusters based on biochemical characterization, sugar utilization, and enzyme production. The dendrogram based on the DGGE band pattern created with Jaccard-distance revealed two major clades with 33.33% similarity. Further, the study of alpha diversity calculation using phenotypic characteristics discloses highly diverse sugar utilization abilities. Moreover, a stress value of 0.1236 was obtained based on the NMDS analysis of the plots using Bary-Curties dissimilarity. The Mediterranean Basin has distinct vegetation types shaped by fire, herbivory, and various human activities. Based on data from 83 belt transects of 10 × 40 m in 28 study sites for five physiognomic vegetation types (semi-closed forest, open forest, closed shrubland, open shrubland, and scrubland) in southwestern Anatolia (Turkey), we analyzed woody species diversity, woody community composition, and vegetation structure of study sites. We used the growth form and regeneration strategy for functional comparisons of physiognomic vegetation types. We found clear distinctions in diversity, species composition, and functional structure of woody plant community across five physiognomic vegetation types. The forest-shrubland-scrubland distinction was the most apparent one. Despite similarities in the woody species richness and Shannon diversity, open and closed vegetation states of forests and shrublands also differed regarding the density and cover of mature individuals and the density of saplings in different functional groups. Non-metric multidimensional scaling analyses and indicator species analyses also indicated clear distinctions among physiognomic vegetation types and openness states. Our findings indicate the necessity of a more complex description of vegetation types in the Mediterranean Basin. The results suggest that open and closed vegetation states of forests and shrublands are functionally distinct vegetation types. Studies have been devoted to describing the diet of D. monticola. However, knowledge of how D. monticola utilizes food resources through ontogeny remains unknown. We characterized D. monticola general dietary patterns and tested for ontogenetic diet shifts. We also inferred on juvenile recruitment patterns. We examined the stomach contents of 120 specimens ranging in size from 20 to 154 mm in standard length (SL). To infer on recruitment periodicity, we examined the size of specimens deposited in museum collections to compile size frequencies by month. We assume that the occurrence of smaller-size class categories will shed light on their recruitment time. Our results show that D. monticola is an omnivore that largely feeds on aquatic insects but also includes detritus, terrestrial material, fishes and crustaceans. Our analysis did not detect strong changes in diet through ontogeny, instead some changes were detected but mainly on the percentage of some food items included at different size category classes. In regards to the recruitment periodicity, we found younger D. monticola (20-40 mm SL) throughout most of the year, suggesting that they may be reproducing for longer periods of time than those previously reported from Honduras. Purpose: People affected by neuromuscular disorders can experience adverse psychosocial consequences and difficulties accessing information and support. Online support groups provide new opportunities for peer support. The aim of this study was to understand how contributors used the message board function of a newly available neuromuscular disorders online support group. Methods: Message postings (n=1951) from the first five months of the message board of a newly formed online support group for neuromuscular disorders hosted by a charitable organization were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: Members created a sense of community through disclosing personal information, connecting with people with similar illness experiences or interests, welcoming others and sharing aspirations for the development of a resourceful community. Experiences, emotional reactions and support were shared in relation to: delayed diagnosis; symptom interpretation; illness management and progression; the isolating impact of rare disorders; and the influence of social and political factors on illness experiences. Conclusions: This study provided a novel insight into individuals' experiences of accessing a newly available online support group for rare conditions hosted by a charitable organization. The findings highlight how the online support group provided an important peer support environment for members to connect with others, exchange information and support and engender discussion on political and social issues unique to living with often-rare neuromuscular disorders. Online support groups may therefore provide an important and easily accessible support outlet for people with neuromuscular disorders as well as a platform for empowering members to raise awareness about the impact of living with these conditions. Zooplankton communities in riverine systems are typically thought to be driven by abiotic forces. However, recent studies have shown that biological controls are capable of structuring these communities in large rivers and may become more influential as a river system becomes more lentic during low discharge. This study uses a long-term data set to examine several environmental variables as potential drivers of zooplankton community structure in a natural riverine lake. We hypothesized that water residence time would be the most important variable influencing zooplankton community structure. To test this, we used non-metric multidimensional scaling and correlation analysis to examine spatial and temporal patterns in zooplankton community structure. Analysis revealed that water residence time was the single most important environmental variable driving zooplankton abundance and community structure. The relationship between water residence time and taxa groups varied indicating that other taxa specific drivers had some influence on zooplankton community structure as well. Continued insight into the mechanisms driving zooplankton community structure will provide a basis for understanding zooplankton dynamics in large river ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The bryophyte flora of Liguria region is compared with data available for other Italian regions. Comparisons were made in terms of biogeographical coherence, floristic similarity, and the number of scientific studies for each region. Activated sludge process is the most widely diffused system to treat wastewater to control the discharge of pollutants into the environment. Microorganisms are responsible for the removal of organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorous and other emerging contaminants. The environmental conditions of biological reactors significantly affects the ecology of the microbial community and, therefore, the performance of the treatment process. In the last years, ozone has been used to reduce excess sludge production by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), whose disposal represents one of the most relevant operational costs. The ozonation process has demonstrated to be a viable method to allow a consistent reduction in excess sludge. This study was carried out in a full-scale plant treating municipal wastewater in two parallel lines, one ozonated in the digestion tank and another used as a control. Bacterial communities of samples collected from both lines of digestion thanks were then compared to assess differences related to the ozonation treatment. Data were then analysed with terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis on 16S rRNA gene. Differences between bacterial communities of both treated and untreated line appeared 2 weeks after the beginning of the treatment.
