Oxytocin is commonly used to shorten farrowing duration in sows. Therefore, determining the optimal time for this application is necessary. This study investigated the effects of oxytocin administration at different time points during parturition on the stillbirth rate, birth interval and farrowing duration to determine the optimal moment of this application in crated sows. The information on 1914 piglets born after oxytocin administration at different time points was collected. The three studied parameters in different groups were compared. The results showed that the stillbirth rate was minimized when oxytocin was used after the birth of the 5th and before the birth of the 8th piglets. The birth interval was the shortest when the oxytocin was used after the birth of the 5th piglet and before the birth of the 9th piglet. The farrowing duration was the shortest when the oxytocin was used after the birth of the 6th piglet and before the birth of the 8th piglet. In conclusion, if oxytocin is destined to be used during parturition, it should be used after the birth of the 6th piglet and before the birth of the 8th piglet to minimize the stillbirth rate and to shorten birth interval and farrowing duration. Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a highly regarded method for producing ultra-precise mechanical parts. In this study, the process parameters of die-sinking EDM using copper electrodes and American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) P20 tool steel workpieces are optimized for various output responses. The study surveys three input parameters, including Current (I), Pulse on Time (Ton), and Pulse Off Time (Toff). Some statistical methods, such as Taguchi and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), are applied to find the optimal set of parameters for the output responses, consisting of Material Removal Rate (MRR), Electrode Wear Rate (EWR), and Surface Roughness (SR), and determine the most influential input factor. With the L9 Orthogonal Array (OA), the analytical results demonstrate the optimal parameter set for MRR is I = 6 A, Ton = 120 µs, and Toff = 30 µs, while those optimal values for EWR and SR are I = 2 A, Ton = 120 µs, and Toff = 90 µs and I = 2 A, Ton = 60 µs, and Toff = 30 µs, respectively. The study also indicates that input factor I has the most effect on the output responses, followed by Ton and Toff. Moreover, Grey relational analysis in the Taguchi method is also employed for multi-response optimization. The optimal parameter set for the three output factors is I = 6 A, Ton = 120 µs, and Toff = 60 µs, respectively. Using various chromatographic separations, two new cembranoids, ehrenbergols F and G (1 and 2), along with three known analogs ehrenbergol D (3), (+)-isosarcophine (4) and sinulariol Z2 (5) were isolated from the soft coral Sarcophyton ehrenbergi. The structural elucidation was done by extensive analysis of the 1 D and 2 D NMR, HR-ESI-QTOF-MS as well as CD experiments. In addition, compounds 1 (IC50 of 38.38 ± 2.89 µM), 3 (IC50 of 37.14 ± 3.22 µM) and 4 (IC50 of 45.01 ± 2.49 µM) revealed moderate inhibitory activity on LPS-induced NO production in RAW264.7 cells, whereas 2 (IC50 of 73.32 ± 1.95 µM) and 5 (IC50 of 64.48 ± 4.93 µM) exhibited weak effect. In our search for cytotoxic constituents from Vietnamese plants, the methanolic extract of Isotrema tadungense was found to exhibit significant cytotoxic effect. Subsequent phytochemical investigation of ethyl acetate fractions of this plant led to isolation of 11 compounds including one new arylbenzofuran rhamnoside namely aristolochiaside (1), two aristololactams (2 and 3), three lignanamides (4–6) and five phenolic amides (7–11). Their structures were elucidated by 1 D and 2 D NMR and HR-QTOF-MS experiments. Among the isolated compounds, aristolochiaside (1), aristolactam AIIIa (2) and N-trans-sinapoyltyramine (10) exhibited strong and selective cytotoxicity on the HeLa human cancer cell line with IC50 values of 7.59 ± 1.03, 8.51 ± 1.73 and 9.77 ± 1.25 μM, respectively. From the MeOH extract of the Vietnamese sea cucumber Holothuria edulis, eight triterpene glycosides (1–8), including one new compound namely holothurin A5 (1), were isolated by using various chromatographic separations. Their structures were established by spectroscopic experiments including 1D, 2D NMR and HR-ESI-MS. Holothurin A5 (1) has a hydroperoxy group at C-25. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of this group in triterpene saponins obtained from sea cucumbers to date. A new [7.7]paracyclophane (1), together with eight known compounds (2–9), were isolated from a MeOH extract of the sea snail Planaxis sulcatus (Born, 1780). Their structures were elucidated by HR-ESI-MS and NMR techniques as well as comparison with those reported in literatures. The absolute configuration of metabolite 1 was determined using ECD spectroscopy. Using various chromatographic separations, six ergostane-type steroids, including one new compound sinubrassione (1), and two pregnene-type steroid glycosides, including one new compound sinubrassioside (7), were isolated from methanol extract of the Vietnamese soft coralSinularia brassica. Six pregnane steroids including one new compound namely 15β-hydroxypregna-4,20-dien-3-one (1), were isolated and structurally elucidated from the octocoralCarijoa riisei. The cytotoxic activity against a panel of eight human cancer cell lines of isolated compounds was also evaluated by SRB method. As the results, 18-acetoxypregna-1,4,20-trien-3-one (5) showed significant cytotoxicity against all the tested cell lines with the IC50values from 22.29 ± 1.47 to 48.73 ± 3.93 μM, whereas 15β-acetoxypregna-1,4,20-trien-3-one (3) and 20R-acetoxypregna-1,4-dien-3-one (6) only exhibited weak effect on KB cell line with IC50values of 93.62 ± 7.32 and 71.38 ± 5.45 μM, respectively. Context: A methanol extract of Cyperus rotundus L. (Cyperaceae) rhizomes showed inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase and α-amylase, two enzymes involve in carbohydrate digestion. Objective: Identification of compounds from C. rotundus rhizomes responsible for the inhibition of α-glucosidase and α-amylase. Materials and methods: Compounds were identified by a phytochemical investigation using combined chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitory activities were evaluated by in vitro enzyme inhibition assays. Results: A new (2 RS,3 SR)-3,4′,5,6,7,8-hexahydroxyflavane ( 1), together with three known stilbene dimers cassigarol E ( 2), scirpusin A ( 3) and B ( 4) were isolated. Compound 2 inhibited both α-glucosidase and α-amylase activities while the flavane 1 only showed effect on α-amylase, and compounds 3 and 4 were active on α-glucosidase. All four compounds showed significant 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity. Discussion: The inhibitory activities against α-amylase and α-glucosidase of the C. rotundus rhizomes were reported for the first time. Stilbene dimers are considered as potent inhibitors of α-glucosidase and promising antihyperglycemic agents. The goal of this article is to review the modelling framework for juggling systems by stressing the particularities of switching dynamics and to design a controller for the systems based on a reformulation of the model predictive control design. The main idea is to catch an impact during the prediction window at the desired level. One of the particularities is the on-line adaptation of the optimisation problem such that the receding prediction window assures the existence of an impact at a certain moment in absolute time. A constraints softening technique will be used to avoid the in-feasibility problems. In a first stage, the basic juggling system which consists of a ball and a juggling robot in one-dimensional case is detailed and subsequently the study is extended to the case of multiple balls juggling with two degrees of freedom. The explicit solution of multi-parametric optimisation problems (MPOP) has been used to construct an off-line solution to relatively small- and medium-sized constrained control problems. The control design principles are based on receding horizon optimisation and generally use linear prediction models for the system dynamics. In this context, it can be shown that the optimal control law is a piecewise linear (PWL) state feedback defined over polytopic cells of the state space. However, as the complexity of the related optimisation problems increases, the memory footprint and implementation of such explicit optimal solution may be burdensome for the available hardware, principally due to the high number of polytopic cells in the state-space partition. In this article we provide a solution to this problem by proposing a patchy PWL feedback control law, which intend to approximate the optimal control law. The construction is based on the linear interpolation of the exact solution at the vertices of a feasible set and the solution of an unconstrained linear quadratic regulator (LQR) problem. With a hybrid patchy control implementation, we show that closed-loop stability is preserved in the presence of additive measurement noise despite the existence of discontinuities at the switch between the overlapping regions in the state-space partition.
