The Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) imposed major restrictions on tobacco company marketing practices in 1999, including banning the sale and distribution of merchandize with combustible cigarette or smokeless tobacco brand names or logos. However, the MSA does not include restrictions on e-cigarette marketing, as these products were not yet on the market at the time of the settlement. Exposure to or use of e-cigarette branded merchandize advertised on social media could contribute to normalization of e-cigarette use by youth.We estimated the prevalence of merchandize (e.g., t-shirts, caps, and key chains) with e-cigarette brand names or logos in 2000 TikTok videos (2021–2022) that featured U.S. and international micro-influencers (content creators with about 10,000–100,000 followers) who promoted e-cigarettes on behalf of e-cigarette brands.Of 152 (8%) promotional videos had merchandize with e-cigarette brand names or logos. Of 125 (6%) featured micro-influencers wearing branded clothing items, i.e., t-shirts, caps, beanies, hoodies, and sweatshirts; and 27 (2%) featured influencers wearing or showing branded accessories, i.e., face masks, stickers, pins, mugs, car air fresheners, lanyards, and key chains.Tobacco control authorities should consider adopting provisions banning the sale, distribution, and direct (e.g., by e-cigarette brands) or indirect (e.g., by influencers) advertising of merchandize bearing e-cigarette brand names or logos. Tobacco pictorial warnings could employ a variety of emotional appeals to enhance effectiveness; however, little research exists to guide the selection of discrete emotional appeals. Further, it remains unclear how contextual pro-smoking norms might influence the persuasive impacts of discrete emotional appeals within pictorial warnings, especially in China, where the overall smoking rate and social acceptance remain high. To fill these gaps, this study leveraged the largest set of pictorial warnings (K = 510) tested to date. Using a randomized large-K multiple-message design, we evaluated the impacts of disgust, fear, self-anger, contempt, shame, and hope appeals among Chinese adult male smokers (N = 2,306) on perceived message effectiveness (PME). Results showed that fear, self-anger, shame, and hope appeals significantly increased PME, while disgust and contempt appeals appeared less effective. Importantly, the PME of nearly all emotional appeals – except hope appeals – was weakened for Chinese adult male smokers with higher pro-smoking normative perceptions, highlighting the importance of considering local contextual influences when implementing pictorial warnings. Introduction: Self-reports of electronic cigarette (ECIG) device and liquid characteristics are not always accurate or consistent with characteristics as measured by researchers. Two methods for measuring ECIG characteristics were compared: user self-reports and rater-coded pictures. Methods: Exclusive ECIG users (N = 321) reported on device (disposable, refillable, adjustable power, brand) and liquid (nicotine concentration, formulation, flavor) characteristics. To measure device type, they chose the term that best described their device ("cig-alike," "vape pen," "mod," "pod," "don't know") and the picture that best resembled their device (cig-alike, vape pen, box mod, USB-shaped pod, teardrop-shaped pod, none). Respondents uploaded device and liquid pictures, and independent raters coded these same features. Agreement between methods was examined with Cohen's kappa and intra-class correlations, including with "don't know" responses included and excluded from analyses. Results: Regardless of how "don't know" responses were treated, agreement was highest for disposable (95.3–97.7%), refillable (96.3%), adjustable power (83.6–88.7%), and brand (77.9–80.4%), and lower for nicotine concentration (72.7%), nicotine formulation (58.6–79.4%), and flavor (66.2%). For device type, agreement was moderate using both term-based (67.9–78.8%) and picture resemblance-based (71.7%) items. For terms, the greatest discrepancy was for devices classified as "vape pens" by self-reports; of these, 70.6% were classified as "pods" by raters. For picture resemblance, ∼13% of users reported that their device resembled none of the pictures; raters classified these devices as USB-shaped pods (50.0%) and mods (23.8%). Conclusions: Self-reports may be sufficient for measuring some characteristics (brand, disposable, refillable, adjustable power), but not others (nicotine concentration and formulation, and some flavor). Background: E-cigarettes are the most-used tobacco product among US adolescents and are associated with nicotine addiction. This qualitative investigation aimed to understand adolescents' experiences and perceptions with nicotine addiction, and related influences of addiction, to inform product regulation, health communication, and cessation resource development. Methods: Between May 2020 and December 2021, in-depth, semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 47 California (United States) adolescents ages 13–17 who reported recent tobacco use (primarily e-cigarette use). The topic of addiction both arose organically and followed specific interviewer questions. Researchers used thematic analysis techniques to identify unifying themes related to addiction. Results: Adolescents described e-cigarette addiction in ways that reflected a loss of control over their routines and activities and as physical symptoms, including reward and withdrawal. While some viewed addiction risk as a reason not to vape, others perceived it possible to use e-cigarettes and avoid or manage addiction. Specific characteristics of e-cigarette devices, particularly disposable nicotine-salt products, including flavors, "cool" designs, concealable size and odor, low price, and ease-of-use, were seen as enhancing addiction risk. Quit attempts were difficult and usually unsupported by adults or formal cessation aids. Conclusions: For many adolescents, addiction is a major component of their experience with e-cigarettes, often in ways that disrupt their routines and reduce their quality of life. Tobacco control or regulation could target e-cigarette product characteristics to decrease potential for addiction among adolescents. Less is known about the impact of subjective neighborhood disorder, which captures distinct exposures that may be relevant to substance use outcomes, including neighborhood social processes, safety, physical characteristics, and neighborhood drug use.Data are from two waves (Feb-Dec 2022) of a prospective cohort of Southern California high school students (n = 2,139; mean[SD] age = 15.7.[0.6]). We examined associations of perceived neighborhood disorder at baseline with (a) perceived ease of purchase (continuous scale 0-100) for alcohol, cannabis, e-cigarettes, cigarettes, hookah, cigars/cigarillos, and oral nicotine at baseline and follow-up, and (b) repeated measures of past 6-month and past-30-day alcohol, vaped cannabis, smoked cannabis, cannabis edibles, e-cigarette, cigarette, cigarillo, hookah, and oral nicotine use.E-cigarettes were perceived to be the easiest product to purchase. Participants in the highest (vs. lowest) quartile of neighborhood disorder reported greater mean ease of purchasing scores for all products (mean difference range = 5.43 [95%CI: 1.64-9.21] for mint/menthol oral nicotine products to 9.40 [95%CI: 6.16-12.64] for hookah) and greater odds of e-cigarette, smoked cannabis, edibles, vaped THC, and alcohol use (odds ratio range = 1.52 [95%CI: 1.05 to 2.18] for past 6-month alcohol to 5.40 [95% CI: 3.46 to 8.42] for 30-day smoked cannabis).Interventions that shape youth perceptions of their neighborhood and reduce youth retail access in disadvantaged neighborhoods are needed and may help to prevent youth substance use. This work attempts to summarize current knowledge about chemical composition and known health effects of disposable e-cigarettes.The literature search was performed in February and March 2024 in Pub Med and Science Direct databases (no time range) by the terms ‘disposable electronic cigarette’, ‘disposable e-cigarette’, ‘disposable e-cigs’, ‘cig-a-like e-cigarette’, ‘cig-a-like electronic cigarette’.Disposable e-cigarettes contain: nicotine, humectants (propylene glycol, glycerin), flavoring agents (diacetyl, acetoin, triacetin, p-menthone, triethyl citrate, ethyl maltol, 3-hexen-1-ol, methyl anthranilate, α-terpineol, perillartine, benzyl alcohol, vanillin, melonal, methyl dihydrojasmonate, and γ-decalactone), cooling agents (WS-3, WS-23, menthol), carbonyl compounds (acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, propionaldehyde, acetone, acrolein) volatile organic compounds (VOCs) (benzene, ethanol, methanol, styrene, acetylpirazine and 2,3,5-trimethylpyrazine), metals and inorganic compounds (chromium, nickel, manganese, lead, aluminum, and zinc) and reactive oxygen species. Furthermore, there was some evidence of nicotine dependence, risk of cancer and adverse respiratory effects of using disposable e-cigarettes.Despite the fact that disposable e-cigarettes contain significantly less toxins compared to combustible cigarettes, they include compounds that are absent in such products that may provide health risk in prolonged usage. The acid formed pyridinium dithiophosphonate salts with 3-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine, pyridoxine, and (S)-(–)-nicotine. The salts revealed antifungal activity against Candida albicans. This study identified contributing factors for tobacco-related inequities among parents (N = 331) during COVID-19. Compared to non-Hispanic White parents, Asian, Black, and multiracial parents experienced greater discrimination. Parents with a nicotine use history experienced greater discrimination and substance use coping relative to tobacco abstainers. Among parents who used nicotine during the pandemic (n = 45), experiencing financial loss, having COVID-19, and greater worries were positively associated with nicotine reductions during COVID-19. Being female, increased family members with COVID-19, discrimination, and substance use coping were negatively associated with nicotine reductions. Objective: To examine use and frequency patterns across e-cigarettes, cigarettes, and little cigars, cigars, and cigarillos (LCCs) over time and determine whether patterns differ by race and ethnicity. Methods: Data was obtained from the Truth Longitudinal Cohort of youth and young adults between September 2020 and June 2022. Latent class and transition analyses were used to classify participants (N = 4448) into subgroups, based on frequency of tobacco product use in the past 30 days, and to estimate the probability of use pattern transitions by race and ethnicity, adjusted for the effects of gender, financial situation, parental education, household tobacco use, and sensation seeking. Results: Four latent classes were identified: former/noncurrent users, predominantly frequent to daily (FTD) e-cigarette users, predominantly FTD e-cigarette and LCC users, and predominantly FTD cigarette with polytobacco users. Use trajectories differed by race and ethnicity. A lower proportion of those who identified as non-Hispanic Black (60.0%) remained e-cigarette and LCC users, relative to those who identified as non-Hispanic White (86.0%), Hispanic or Latino (86.0%), and another race and ethnicity (79.0%). A lower proportion of those who identified as Hispanic or Latino (54.0%) and another race and ethnicity (59.9%) remained cigarette with polytobacco users, relative to those who identified as non-Hispanic White (76.0%) and non-Hispanic Black (72.0%). A greater proportion of non-Hispanic Black respondents transitioned from e-cigarette and LCC user to former/noncurrent user (40.0%) and polytobacco user to e-cigarette and LCC user (11.0%), relative to other racial/ethnic groups. Conclusion: More research is needed to determine why tobacco use trajectories differ by race and ethnicity. Background: E-cigarette advertising, which often includes various features, may prompt e-cigarette use and product switching. This study examined the associations between noticing e-cigarette ad features and perceived product appeal and interest in completely switching from cigarettes to advertised e-cigarettes among young adult dual users of both products. Methods: We analyzed data from an online heatmap experiment among young adult dual users defined as established cigarette smokers who currently used e-cigarettes (ages 18-34 years; n = 1,821). Participants viewed 12 e-cigarette ads, clicked on ad features (e.g., fruit flavors, nicotine warnings, price promotions, smoker-targeted claims) that attracted their attention (defined as "noticing"), and answered questions about e-cigarette product appeal and interest in completely switching from cigarettes to the e-cigarettes shown. We examined within-person associations between noticing specific ad features and outcomes, controlling for demographic and tobacco use-related characteristics. Results: Noticing fruit flavors (AOR = 1.67 and 1.28) and fruit images (AOR = 1.53 and 1.21) was positively associated with having any e-cigarette product appeal and switching interest. Noticing price promotions (AOR = 1.23) was positively associated with product appeal. In contrast, noticing nicotine warnings (AOR = 0.74 and 0.86), smoker-targeted claims (AOR = 0.78 and 0.89), and tobacco flavors (AOR = 0.92 and 0.90) was negatively associated with product appeal and switching interest. Conclusions: Noticing certain e-cigarette ad features (e.g., fruit flavors and nicotine warnings) may be associated with product appeal and/or switching interest among young adult dual users. More research is needed to assess the influence of e-cigarette ad features that promote product switching interests among cigarette smokers while discourage interests among tobacco-naïve individuals. Background: Vaping is popular among adolescents and emerging adults; however, little is known about regular vaping patterns in older adolescents and emerging adults. Objective: The current study explored whether gender and age are associated with nicotine-based vaping frequency to ascertain ascertaining which subgroups of youth are most at-risk for frequent use. Methods: In a cross-sectional survey, participants using nicotine-based vaping devices (N=535, age range 16-24) reported frequency measured as vaping days in a week, number of episodes during which participants vaped, and puff numbers for each episode. A two-way multivariate analysis of variance was used to test the effects and interactions of gender and age groups on the three frequency outcomes. Results: Emerging adults and males vaped more frequently than their older adolescent and female counterparts, respectively. Specifically, emerging adults vaped more days per week in comparison to older adolescents, whereas males vaped more days per week and had more vaping episodes per day relative to females. Further, emerging adult males had more vaping episodes in comparison to other subgroups, and adolescent females as well as emerging adult males took more puffs per episode in comparison to emerging adult females. Objective: US Hispanics have several health disparities, greater tobacco/nicotine-related illnesses, lower access to smoking cessation, and lower rates of cessation. Understanding cultural constructs linked to tobacco/nicotine use may provide a greater understanding of future cultural adaptations of cessation interventions. This study used a multidimensional acculturation framework, with cultural practices, identity, and values, to test links between measures of acculturation stress, multidimensional acculturation (language-based enculturation and acculturation, cultural identity, familism), and tobacco/nicotine use, and interactions with gender. Design: Participants were 391 adult Latin American immigrants (69% women); 12% self-reported tobacco/nicotine use in the past six months. Results: Path analysis showed acculturative stress, β =.16, and acculturation, β =.20, were positively related to tobacco/nicotine use. Enculturation, familism, and Hispanic cultural identity were not related to tobacco/nicotine use. There were no significant acculturation by enculturation or gender interactions, but women were less likely to use tobacco/nicotine than men, β = −.36. Conclusion: Findings suggest that tobacco/nicotine cessation interventions for Latino immigrants may be enhanced with an emphasis on the mitigation of acculturative stress, attention to the adoption of US cultural practices, and gender. Adolescents and young adults continue to use e-cigarettes, and communication campaigns are needed to decrease use among these populations. We developed and tested a point-of-sale communication campaign focused on e-cigarette chemical exposure. We developed messages based on formative research and tested them (versus text-only messages) in a nationally-representative online survey among adolescents and young adults (16–25) (Phase 1). Based on survey findings, we selected a message focused on nicotine and brain development for the point-of-sale trial (Phase 2). We then conducted a cluster-randomized trial at six gas stations with convenience stores, randomly assigned to the intervention (messages displayed) or no message control condition. We conducted intercept surveys with repeated cross-sectional samples of 50 participants (ages 16–25) per store, at baseline and a four-week follow-up. Phase 1 included 1,636 participants in the online study. Intervention messages were rated as more attention grabbing than plain text messages (p <.05), though were rated similarly on other outcomes. Exposure to intervention messages resulted in larger changes from pre- to posttest for beliefs about addiction and relative harms versus cigarettes (p <.05). Phase 2 included 586 participants in the point-of-sale study. Real-world campaign exposure was low (31.8%), and no differences were found between conditions. E-cigarette prevention messages focused on nicotine's impact on brain development show promise. However, garnering attention for communication campaigns in saturated point-of-sale environments, often dominated by tobacco advertising, is challenging. ObjectiveMethodResultsConclusionsThis pre-registered analysis aimed to examine the moderating role of nicotine-use motives on the association between minority stress and nicotine use and craving among sexual minority youth.Data stem from a 30-day ecological momentary assessment study conducted among 83 sexual minority youth ages 15–19 years old (M age = 17.96, SD = 1.10; 56.63% cisgender women; 73.5% non-Hispanic White). Participants were instructed to complete at least four assessments per day on wireless devices. Two types of multilevel models were estimated: models predicting day-level nicotine use and models predicting momentary nicotine use craving.Experiencing minority stressors was not associated with day-level nicotine use, but it was associated with greater momentary nicotine craving. Nicotine use-motives did not moderate the association between minority stress and nicotine use. In contrast, stress-reduction motives, assessed as a person-level trait, moderated the association between minority stress and nicotine craving, such that nicotine craving after experiencing a minority stressor was consistently higher relative to when minority stress had not been reported. Sensitivity analyses that examined associations between minority stress and nicotine use on a given day, regardless of temporal order, showed that minority stress was associated with higher odds of nicotine use on that day.Experiencing minority stressors did not predict day-level nicotine use but does contribute to greater momentary nicotine craving, informing minority stress theory. Consistency of the minority stress and nicotine craving relation, largely regardless of trait-level motives, highlights the potential context dependence of nicotine craving among sexual minority youth.Preregistration: This study was preregistered at osf.io/w5sz9. This is authors' reply to the Commentary on our publication entitled "Adult smokers' Complete Switching Away from Cigarettes at 6, 9, and 12 Months after Initially Purchasing a JUUL e-Cigarette." Analyses addressed questions about follow-up rates and missed responses in the Adult JUUL Switching and Smoking Trajectories (ADJUSST) Study. Results demonstrate limited potential for selection bias, as participants who missed surveys were similar to those with complete data, and re-contact of participants who missed a follow-up indicated almost half were not smoking. Imputing smoking behavior for missing data would likely introduce bias and is not appropriate. The study demonstrated that JUUL products can facilitate high rates of complete switching away from cigarettes as suggested in previous experimental and observational studies. The ADJUSST cohort, including baseline nonsmokers, demonstrates a net reduction in smoking prevalence. Moreover, population modeling considering both benefits and harms demonstrated a net population benefit. While the ADJUSST Study is not without limitations, the findings are consistent with multiple streams of real-world evidence that indicate that ENDS can facilitate switching among adults who smoke, and provide population benefits. Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use one of two formulations of nicotine—freebase or nicotine salt. This study examines whether maintenance or switching between nicotine formulations is associated with ENDS dependence using longitudinal survey data. 543 U.S. adults (21+) using ENDS frequently (5+ days/week) self-reported and uploaded photos of their most used ENDS liquids in wave 3–5 online surveys from September 2021 to April 2023. Nicotine formulation from photo data was used if available; otherwise, self-reported data were used. ENDS dependence was measured in each wave by a 4-item E-cigarette Dependence Scale (EDS: range 0–4, 4 being most dependent). Data were analyzed using ANCOVA. Participants using nicotine salt liquids in three waves reported the highest EDS in wave 5 (49.3%, EDS = 2.59), followed by participants switching from salt to freebase (3.2%, EDS = 2.58), participants switching from freebase to salt (10.1%, EDS = 2.52), participants using freebase in three waves (34.9%, EDS = 2.18), and participants changing back and forth (2.4%, EDS = 2.11). After controlling for smoking status, participants stably using nicotine salt and participants switching from freebase to salt reported significantly higher EDS than those stably using freebase (p < 0.01). Over an 18-month period, people consistently using nicotine salt liquids and participants switching from freebase to nicotine salt were more likely to have a higher ENDS dependence than those consistently using freebase liquids. Understanding how switching between nicotine formulations relates to ENDS dependence can inform nicotine formulation and concentration regulations that may impact addiction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

People with HIV smoke cigarettes at a high prevalence, and it is important to identify modifiable variables related to smoking in this population. Race/ethnicity-based discrimination is common among people with HIV from minoritized racial and ethnic groups and results in significant adverse effects. The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between race/ethnicity-based discrimination, depression, and smoking-related variables among people with HIV who smoke. This was a secondary analysis of data from a prospective, randomized controlled smoking cessation trial for people with HIV. Participants were recruited from three HIV clinical care sites and randomly assigned to an HIV-tailored group therapy intervention or a control condition. Participants completed measures of demographics, smoking-related variables, race/ethnicity-based discrimination, and depressive symptoms at baseline and were followed up 3- and 6-months after study completion. Depressive symptoms had an indirect effect on the relationship between race/ethnicity-based discrimination and self-efficacy to quit smoking at 3-month follow-up. Depressive symptoms mediated the relationship between race/ethnicity-based discrimination and both nicotine dependence and self-efficacy to quit smoking at 6-month follow-up. Findings highlight the importance of considering race/ethnicity-based discrimination and depressive symptoms in the development and implementation of smoking cessation treatment interventions for people with HIV. People living with HIV (PLHIV) are two to three times more likely to smoke tobacco compared to the general community. Evidence from the general population suggests that nicotine vaping products (NVPs) can be acceptable and effective smoking cessation aids, but there is limited evidence on the extent to which this is the case among PLHIV. This manuscript reports findings from the Tobacco Harm Reduction with Vaporised Nicotine (THRiVe) trial, a mixed-methods study investigating the feasibility of NVPs as smoking cessation aids among 29 PLHIV who smoked tobacco. Surveys and semi-structured interviews explored participants' experiences and perceptions of NVPs, their features and functions, and support for various NVP regulatory policy options. Participants described seven reasons why NVPs were acceptable cessation aids: they satisfied nicotine cravings; differences between NVPs and cigarettes facilitated habit breaking; fewer adverse effects compared to traditional cessation aids; NVPs allowed for a "weaning process" rather than requiring abrupt abstinence; tobacco became increasingly unpleasant to smoke; NVPs provided an increased sense of control; and participants experienced a deeper understanding of personal smoking behaviours. This study provides valuable insight into the preferred features of NVPs among PLHIV and reasons why NVPs may be effective for promoting smoking cessation among PLHIV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Perceptions of health harms and addictiveness related to nicotine products, THC e-cigarettes, and e-cigarettes with other ingredients are an important predictor of use. This study examined differences in perceived harm and addiction across such products among adolescents, young adults, and adults. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey (N = 6,131, ages 13–40 years old) in which participants reported perceived harm and addictiveness for 11 products (cigarettes, disposable nicotine e-cigarettes, pod-based nicotine e-cigarettes, other nicotine e-cigarettes, THC e-cigarettes, e-cigarettes with other ingredients, nicotine pouches, nicotine lozenges, nicotine gums, nicotine tablets, nicotine toothpicks). We applied adjusted regression models and conducted pairwise comparisons between age groups (13–17, 18–20, 21–25, and 26–40) and product use status (never, ever, and past-30-day use), adjusting for gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, and financial comfort. Results: Overall, participants in younger age groups perceived products to be more harmful and addictive than those in older age groups, with the exception of e-cigarettes with other ingredients. For all products, participants who never used perceived each product to be more harmful than those who ever used. For all products, participants who used the products in the past 30-days had lower perceived harm and addictiveness compared to never and ever use. Certain sociodemographic groups, such as people who identify as LGBTQ+, Non-Hispanic Black, or Hispanic, had lower perceived harm and addictiveness for most products. Discussion: Efforts should be made to educate all age groups and minoritized groups on harms and addictiveness of all nicotine products, THC e-cigarettes, and e-cigarettes with other ingredients. Introduction: Many people who smoke cigarettes report believing that nicotine causes cancer, a misperception that may reduce interest in switching to noncombustible nicotine products. Quantitative survey questions do not capture how this population thinks about nicotine and switching to noncombustible products. Methods: This study used an online convenience sample of 193 US adults who smoke cigarettes and reported that nicotine causes cancer. Respondents were asked if they thought nicotine was harmful (and why or why not) and if they would consider switching to a noncombustible product (and why or why not). Inductive and deductive coding were used, and descriptive statistics are reported. Results: Descriptions of nicotine directly causing disease (61%) were more common than descriptions of nicotine causing addiction to a harmful product (8%). One-third expressly stated that nicotine causes cancer, and 21% that nicotine causes lung disease. Interest in switching was moderate (mean 47.4 out of 100). When asked about switching, 34% described enjoying their current smoking experience, 23% described a perceived health benefit, 16% described a health concern, and 11% worried that switching would not address nicotine addiction. Discussion: Adults who smoke commonly perceived nicotine as a direct cause of cigarette-related disease, and harm and addictiveness perceptions were often mentioned as reasons for interest or disinterest in switching to a noncombustible. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) currently requires a warning about the addictive nature of nicotine to be placed on electronic cigarette advertisements and packaging. To consider the value of additional warning messages on public health outcomes, this study examines the additive effect of new warnings that are based on recent claims from U.S. federal authorities. We conducted a secondary analysis of recent data from 1,202 U.S. youth ages 14–17 to test the impact of exposure to additional warnings placed on advertisements for vaping products on cognitive elaboration, fear, and willingness to vape and smoke. This investigation also looked closely at effects on youth who may have increased risk of future vaping due to prior vaping experiences or having friends who vape. Exposure to the alternative warnings did not amplify cognitive elaboration compared to the current FDA warning alone, but it did increase fear. Youth elaboration on both the benefits and risks of vaping was associated with willingness to both vape and smoke, but fear was not associated with either outcome. The effects of warning label exposure and cognitive elaboration varied by prior vaping experience and having at least one friend who vapes. In 2017, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a regulatory plan to reduce the nicotine content of cigarettes. This study examines the association of exposure to industry-sponsored corrective statements on perceptions of the addictiveness of low-nicotine cigarettes relative to typical cigarettes within the general US population. The study comprised 4975 US adult respondents of the 2019 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS 5, Cycle 3). Multinomial logistic regression models were used to examine associations between exposure to tobacco industry corrective messages and perceptions of the addictiveness of low-nicotine cigarettes relative to typical cigarettes. In the overall population, 4.1% reported that low-nicotine cigarettes were much more addictive than typical cigarettes, 67.5% said they were equally addictive, while 28.4% reported they were slightly/much less addictive. Adults exposed to industry-sponsored corrective messages had higher odds of perceiving low-nicotine cigarettes as equally addictive as typical cigarettes (aOR 1.57; 95% CI, 1.13–2.19) than those who saw no corrective messages. Those exposed to the corrective messages specifically about the addictiveness of smoking and nicotine had higher odds of perceiving low-nicotine cigarettes as equally addictive as typical cigarettes (aOR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.07–2.81) compared to those who saw no corrective message. Our findings suggest that exposure to court-ordered tobacco industry corrective statements may have reinforced perceptions on the addictive potential of nicotine. College students use electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) more often than any other US demographic group. In a novel application of the acquired preparedness model, we examined how proximal (e.g., cognitions) and distal (e.g., dispositional) influences accounted for ENDS use and dependence. Undergraduates (N = 1075; 72% female, 74% White) from seven US campuses completed an online survey between October 2019-March 2020. We modeled ENDS use and dependence, respectively, as zero-inflated Poisson distributions with impulsivity as an independent variable and perceived risks and benefits of e-cigarettes as mediators. Students higher in impulsivity perceived more benefits and, in turn, reported greater ENDS use and dependence. Curiosity and friends' use motivated ENDS initiation; stress management and nicotine motivated continued use. ENDS interventions should be tailored to students higher in impulsivity, as they hold more favorable perceptions of ENDS, and should enhance skills to manage stress and nicotine cravings. Background: The prevalence of recreational cannabis use among adolescents is a growing public health concern due to its link to short- and long-term adverse effects on adolescents' wellbeing, physical health, mental health, and interpersonal behaviors. Method: Five databases were searched from inception to March 17, 2023, for exposure (nicotine product, alcohol) and outcome (recreational cannabis) in adolescents (persons aged 10–19 years). The studies were screened independently by two reviewers, and the quality of the studies was assessed with Newcastle Ottawa and AXIS tool. PRISMA guidelines were employed in this review. Result: Twenty-one (21) studies involving 2,778,406 adolescents were included in the appraisal and heterogeneity was found among these studies. Ascertainment bias was commonly detected in thirteen (13) of the included studies. Among the substances examined as potential exposures, nicotine-product use emerged as a significant factor associated with future cannabis use among adolescents, particularly in mid-adolescence and in places where recreational cannabis use has been legalized. Conclusion: Current evidence suggests an association between nicotine-product use and subsequent recreational cannabis use among adolescents. However, further research is needed to establish causality between exposure to nicotine substances and the use of recreational cannabis within this age demographic. Additionally, there is a need for the development of prevention programs and targeted policies that continuously inform and update this vulnerable sub-population about the risks associated with cannabis use for leisure. Background: The stigma and discrimination experienced by individuals with an alcohol/substance use disorder often extends to the family members and friends who provide care, which is known as courtesy stigma. This courtesy stigma can lead to isolation, poor mental health and might impact the quality-of-care these individuals provide. The aim of this study was to examine the frequency of experienced courtesy stigma/discrimination in individuals in a family support service for a loved one's substance use, and to examine any cross-sectional associations with changes in mood, health- and social-related outcomes. Methods: Thirty-six individuals (25 female) with a mean age of 51.91 years took part in an ecological momentary assessment study in which the experience of courtesy stigma/discrimination and measures of mood, health (e.g. alcohol use, nicotine use, healthy eating, sleep, physical activity) and social connections were taken 3 times per day for fourteen days. Results: Across 1029 competed assessments (compliance ∼68%), there were 122 (∼11%) reports of courtesy stigma/discrimination. The most common sources of stigma/discrimination were from family members (∼43% of occurrences) and friends (∼31% of occurrences). Experiencing this stigma/discrimination was associated with increases in alcohol and nicotine use, as well as reductions in healthy eating, physical activity, sleep, social connections, and mood. Conclusions: The experience of courtesy stigma/discrimination was common in a sample of individual's who support a loved one with alcohol or substance use disorder. Background: Prior research has discovered an association between vaping activities and increased delinquent behaviors. However, this relationship has been exclusively studied among adolescents and has not been examined among an adult sample. Methods: The current study uses a nationally representative sample of approximately 45,000 adults from the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Logistic regression and negative binomial regression are employed to assess the association between three types of vaping (marijuana, nicotine, flavor) and five crime measures (arrest, sold drugs, stole >$50, attack, crime index), net of covariates. A vaping index is also examined to determine whether the number of substances vaped is related to criminal outcomes. Results: Results indicate that past year and past month marijuana and nicotine vaping are associated with higher odds of almost all crime measures, but flavor vaping was not significantly associated with the crime outcomes. Additionally, the vaping index suggests that the number of substances vaped is associated with the likelihood of engaging in certain crimes. Conclusions: The findings of the current study indicate the need for more awareness of the negative social consequences associated with vaping, particularly marijuana vaping. Additionally, the crime patterns among adults in this study are different from previous studies using adolescent samples. Specifically, flavor vaping is not associated with criminal behavior among the adult only sample. Thus, vaping studies that use adolescent samples may not generalize to adults. This longitudinal study tested the relationship between cigarette and e-cigarette use and SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion among US college students. Undergraduate students (n = 764), drawn from a randomly selected invitation-only pool from a large Midwestern university, that were initially negative for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and were re-tested in November were included in this study conducted in Fall 2020. Demographics and cigarette and e-cigarette use behaviors (nicotine use) were collected in a baseline survey. SARS-CoV-2 antibody tests were administered in September (baseline) and November (endline) of 2020. Log-binomial regression analyses were conducted to test the association between nicotine use and SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion. SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion was 5.2%. No statistically significant associations were found between nicotine use and SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion. Contrary to prior results, we found no association between nicotine use and SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion. Limited research has examined the health implications for youth working in United States tobacco production. Agricultural labor is hazardous, yet youth are legally permitted to be hired as farmworkers. Many youth farmworkers are members of the vulnerable Latino farmworker community. In North Carolina, youth work in many agricultural crops including tobacco. A sample of 152 Latino youth farmworkers ages 12–20 years (M = 16.7, SD = 2.0) across 19 North Carolina counties completed a cross-sectional survey and provided saliva samples in 2019. Surveys detailed personal and work characteristics. Saliva samples were analyzed for salivary cotinine and reported in geometric means (ng/ml). Bivariate associations were used to delineate the relationship between personal and work characteristics with salivary cotinine levels. Cotinine levels ranged from 0.05 to 313.5 ng/ml. Older age and working in tobacco were significantly associated with higher salivary cotinine levels. For every one year increase in age, there was a 31% increase in mean salivary cotinine levels (b = 1.31; 95% CI = [1.15–1.50]; p <.0001). Youth tobacco workers' (n = 15) salivary cotinine levels were 890% higher than those not working in tobacco (n = 137) (13.26, 95% CI = [5.95–29.56] ng/ml compared to 1.34, 95% CI = [1.03–1.75] ng/ml (p <.0001)). Latino youth tobacco workers are exposed to nicotine through their work. This exposure presents serious risk of Green Tobacco Sickness (acute nicotine poisoning) and other health concerns given the growing evidence for risk of epigenetic changes negatively affecting long-term cognitive function. Background: A growing body of literature suggests that many people who use e-cigarettes become dependent and have difficulty quitting. Most people who use e-cigarettes have interest in quitting, yet there is currently a lack of evidence to inform interventions for e-cigarette cessation. Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with successful e-cigarette quit attempts among a large sample of people who use e-cigarettes. Methods: Participants (n=586) were people who use e-cigarettes who reported at least one lifetime attempt to quit their e-cigarette use. Adjusted logistic regression models were performed to examine differences in e-cigarette use characteristics and quit methods between people who currently use e-cigarettes and who quit e-cigarettes. Results: Most participants were people who currently use e-cigarettes and only 27.5% reported successfully quitting. Most participants (90.6%) used e-cigarettes that contained nicotine, and over half (54.0%) used closed-system e-cigarette devices with replaceable pre-filled pods or cartridges. The quit method most commonly used overall (63.1%) and for people who quit e-cigarettes (70.8%) was cold turkey. Past 30-day cigarette use and past 30-day other tobacco use was significantly associated with reduced odds of quitting, and there were no e-cigarette characteristics significantly associated with successful cessation. Nicotine replacement therapy was the only e-cigarette cessation method that was significantly associated with increased odds of quitting after adjusting for past 30-day cigarette and other tobacco use. Conclusions: These results suggests that cigarette use, other tobacco use, and quit method used may significantly influence the likelihood of e-cigarette cessation. Background: Restrictions on televised tobacco ads do not apply to vaping and oral nicotine products. Several campaigns are currently active on U.S. national television. This research examines the extent to which objective ad features are associated with ad, brand, and product appeal and use intentions among 18-24-year-olds. Methods: We identified seven unique campaigns for Vuse, Velo, and JUUL from the Mintel Comperemedia database, coded for youth-appealing content, and then randomly assigned among N = 1450 18-24-year-olds. Following exposure to one 15-second ad, participants completed a survey assessing their subjective responses. Results: Youth-appealing content was prevalent across these ads to varying degrees. Mixed effects regression analyses showed a positive association between features from the Content Appealing to Youth (CAY) index and pro-social brand perceptions, positive attitudes, reactions, and perceived effectiveness of the ad, and positive use perceptions. Moreover, themes related to customization of the device and environmental sustainability were associated with similar positive perceptions, including that using the product would be cool, as well as behavioral intentions to try, use occasionally, and use daily. Conclusions: Regulators need to update tobacco advertising restrictions to accurately reflect the current tobacco product landscape. This study contributes to the research on tobacco promotion strategies by examining the current marketing landscape for newer tobacco products and their appeal to youth. Findings from this study inform comprehensive tobacco marketing regulations, recommending the FDA update its guidelines and apply current marketing restrictions to e-cigarettes and oral nicotine products. To inform policy and messaging, this study examined characteristics of adolescents' and young adults' (AYAs') exposure to and engagement with nicotine and tobacco product (NTP) social media (SM) content. In this cross-sectional survey study, AYAs aged 13–26 (N=1,163) reported current NTP use, SM use frequency, and exposure to and engagement with SM content promoting and opposing NTP use (i.e. frequency, source[s], format[s], platform[s]). Participants who used NTPs (vs. did not use) were more likely to report having seen NTP content (p-values<.001). Prevalent sources were companies/brands (46.6%) and influencers (44.4%); prevalent formats were video (65.4%) and image (50.7%). Exposure to content promoting NTP use was prevalent on several popular platforms (e.g. TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat); exposure to content opposing NTP use was most prevalent on YouTube (75.8%). Among those reporting content engagement (i.e. liking, commenting on, or sharing NTP content; 34.6%), 57.2% engaged with influencer content. Participants reported engaging with content promoting and opposing NTP use on popular platforms (e.g. TikTok, Instagram, YouTube). Participants with (versus without) current NTP use were significantly more likely to use most SM platforms and to report NTP content exposure and engagement (p-values<.05). Limited prior research to examine co-occurrence of prescription drug misuse with other substances among young adults has documented outcomes that are more problematic for those with higher rates of co-ingesting alcohol. There is a need to understand how college students in this period of heightened risk use other salient substances in moments of their prescription misuse in daily life. Young-adult college students who engaged in recent prescription misuse (N = 297) completed ecological momentary assessment (EMA) over a 28-day period, resulting in 23,578 reports. Multilevel modeling examined within-person associations between other momentary substance use (including alcohol, nicotine, energy drinks, and marijuana) and prescription misuse in daily life. Analyses accounted for between-person characteristics, having a current focal prescription, and effects of reporting over time. Participant sex was also explored as a moderator. In adjusted multilevel models, college students' momentary nicotine use and energy drink use each were associated with their greater likelihood of prescription misuse in daily life. In contrast, momentary marijuana use was linked with lower likelihood of misuse. Moderation results indicated that males (but not females) were less likely to engage in prescription misuse in moments of their alcohol use. Drawing from data obtained using EMA, findings provide novel insights about the real-world associations between prescription drug misuse and other salient substance behaviors during a developmental period that is important for establishing later substance use and health. Vaping devices with a reduced heating power have the potential to generate less harmful chemicals. This leads the importance of examining particle size distribution (PSD) of undiluted aerosol at relatively lower power, which got a lesser attention to date. In this study, undiluted aerosol generated from a fourth-generation vaping device was measured using a low-flow (1 L/min) cascade impactor at heating powers ranging from 3.5 to 6.5 W with nicotine concentration of 12 and 18 mg/mL. The generated particle mass/puff increased with power linearly following a slope of 1.4. The particle diameter found was mostly within a range from 0.49 µm to 2.80 µm for the tested conditions. Higher generation of aerosol, either by increasing heating power or decreasing nicotine concentration, enhanced the transformation of particle size toward larger particles. A volumetric approach was used to estimate the percentile diameters corresponding to 10%, 50% and 90% of cumulative aerosols. The mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) and geometric standard deviation (GSD) increased linearly up to 0.88 µm (with a slope of 0.082) and 1.53 (with a slope of 0.115), respectively, when the power increased from 3.5 to 5.5 W; and remained almost unchanged for power levels higher than 5.5 W. The nicotine effect on MMAD and GSD tended to diminish for a higher heating power of 5.5 W. Particle number was estimated from the measured particle mass, which can be useful to supplement particle number count measurements. This study aims to determine the smoking prevalence and nicotine addiction in pre-hospital emergency care workers. The study, conducted between March-April 2022 with the participation of 318 pre-hospital care workers, is cross-sectional. To determine the participants' nicotine addiction levels, the participants the Fagerström Nicotine Addiction Test (FNAT) was used. For statistical analyses, correlation, chi-square, student's t-test, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used. The statistical significance level was accepted as p <.05. While 53.0% Of The Study Group Used To Smoke, 9.1% Thought That Smoking Was Not harmful to health. The mean FNAT score of the smoking group was 5.04 ± 2.92. Men's FNAT scores (p <.05) were higher for those over the age of 40 than for those under 40 than women (p <.05). In the comparison made according to the participants' occupations, the most smoking group was physicians (p <.05). The group with the highest addiction score among smokers was nurses (p <.05). A positive correlation was found between the years of employment in the sector and the FNAT scores of smokers (r = 0.146, p <.05). Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a vascular disease that involves aortic wall dilation. Cigarette smoking is an established risk factor and rupture, and nicotine may be a major contributor to the onset of AAA. In humans the condition is associated with stenosis of the vasa vasorum (VV), which may be caused by nicotine. In this study, we evaluated the effects of nicotine on VV pathology. After 4 weeks of nicotine administration to rats using an osmotic pump, the VV patency rate in the nicotine administration group was significantly lower than that in the control group. The levels of Ki-67, a cell proliferation marker, were significantly increased in the regions containing VV in the nicotine group, as were hypoxia inducible factor-α levels. Collagen levels around VV were significantly lower in the nicotine group than in the controls. Our data suggest that nicotine can cause VV stenosis by inducing abnormal proliferation of smooth muscle cells in the VV. The increased risk of AAA development due to cigarette smoking may be partially explained by nicotine-induced VV denaturation and collagen fiber degradation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tobacco use remains one of the most significant preventable public health problems globally and is increasingly concentrated among vulnerable groups, including those with trauma exposure or diagnosed with PTSD. The goal of this systematic review was to update and extend previous reviews. Of the 7224 publications that met the initial criteria, 267 were included in the review. Summary topic areas include conceptual frameworks for the relation between trauma or PTSD and tobacco use; associations between trauma exposure or PTSD and tobacco use; number and type of trauma exposures and tobacco use; PTSD symptoms and tobacco use; Treatment-related studies; and the examination of causal relations. Evidence continues to indicate that individuals exposed to trauma or diagnosed with PTSD are more likely to use tobacco products, more nicotine dependent and less likely to abstain from tobacco even when provided evidence-based treatments than individuals without trauma. The most commonly cited causal association proposed was use of tobacco for self-regulation of negative affect associated with trauma. A small proportion of the studies addressed causality and mechanisms of action. Future work should incorporate methodological approaches and measures from which we can draw causal conclusions and mechanisms to support the development of viable therapeutic targets. Tremor is one of the effects of nicotine as a toxic substance, especially in animal models. The intensity and duration of tremors were used to evaluate the effect of nicotine on locomotor activity in laboratory animals. In our observations, the time interval between nicotine injection and the onset of tremor changed depending on the dose. Therefore, by increasing the dose of nicotine in rats, the time interval of tremor onset was also shortened. These results suggest that the time interval between nicotine injection and the onset of tremors can be used as a complementary index for better evaluation of nicotine-derived motor disturbances. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic recurrent inflammatory disease affecting the rectum and colon. Numerous epidemiological studies have identified smoking as a protective factor for UC. Dysbiosis of intestinal microbiota and release of inflammatory factors are well-established characteristics associated with UC. Therefore, we have observed that nicotine exhibits the potential to ameliorate colitis symptoms in UC mice. Additionally, it exerts a regulatory effect on colonic microbiota dysbiosis by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria while suppressing harmful bacteria. The first aim of the study was to identify sex differences in the use of psychoactive substances among subjects with a previous driving under the influence (DUI) episode. The secondary objective was to propose specific strategies for medico-legal improvements. This was a retrospective observational study that took place between June 1, 2019, and August 31, 2023. It was conducted on DUI subjects examined for reinstatement of their driver's license using an integrated medico-legal and toxicological approach. Ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and illicit psychoactive substances were determined from hair samples. We performed descriptive statistical analyses for the entire sample as well as separately by sex. Additionally, we conducted binary logistic regression analyses separately for males and females to identify protective/risk factors associated with previous road accidents and judgments of unfitness to drive due to excessive alcohol consumption (EtG ≥ 30 pg/mg). The study included 2,221 subjects, comprising 1,970 men and 251 women. Men exhibited a higher prevalence of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit psychoactive substance use. Women were more frequently co-users of alcohol and psychoactive substances and involved in road accidents at the time of DUI. Among the men, being married or having a partner was found to be a protective factor concerning past traffic accidents. For both sexes, a DUI episode with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) exceeding 1.5 g/L or the co-ingestion of alcohol and drugs was identified as a risk factor for road accident involvement. For men, smoking more than 20 cigarettes per day and, for women, having a DUI episode with a BAC over 1.5 g/L were the main factors indicating unfitness to drive, as determined through high hair EtG levels (> 30 pg/mg). Women with a previous history of road accidents were less likely to have EtG levels of 30 pg/mg or more. The study confirmed sex differences in subjects with a previous DUI episode. A BAC exceeding 1.5 g/L or the simultaneous use of alcohol and drugs at the time of DUI necessitate careful assessment of both men and women seeking driver's license reinstatement. In women, a BAC exceeding 1.5 g/L is considered a risk factor for a subsequent judgment of unfitness to drive. The medico-legal assessment should also involve a thorough investigation of smoking habits in men, as these habits could be related to an increased risk of excessive alcohol consumption. Nicotine and tobacco product (NTP) and cannabis use are common in adolescence/young adulthood and increase risk for negative psychosocial outcomes. This study investigated associations among adolescent/young adults' initial experiences with NTPs, lifetime frequency of substance use, substance-related problems, and mental health symptoms. Adolescents and young adults enrolled in a study on NTP and cannabis use were asked at what age they initiated the use of NTPs and were assigned to groups based on which product or substance(s) they reported using at the earliest age. Participants who reported use of NTPs (in isolation, without cannabis) first (N = 78, "NTP-only"), simultaneous use of NTPs and cannabis first (e.g., blunt or bowl; N = 25, "Simult-only"), use of both NTPs in isolation and simultaneous use at the same age (N = 48, "NTP + Simult"), and no NTP use (N = 53, "NTP-naïve") were compared on substance use, substance-related problems, and mental health symptoms. Groups differed on lifetime frequency of NTP, simultaneous, and cannabis use, with NTP users reporting more substance use episodes and substance-related problems than the NTP-naïve group. The lifetime frequency of cannabis use did not differ across NTP use groups. NTP use was associated with increased anxiety and depression, with no significant differences between groups. Adolescents and young adults who use nicotine may be at increased risk for greater nicotine use and mental health consequences, but initiating NTP use simultaneously with cannabis may not increase the risk of negative outcomes above and beyond nicotine initiation. Although empirical work focused on smoking-drinking comorbidity among Latinx persons is growing, no work has explored the relation between alcohol use severity in terms of co-occurring smoking processes and mental health. Therefore, the present investigation aimed to explore the prevalence and role of alcohol use severity in relation to clinically significant tobacco and mental health problems among English-speaking Latinx adults who smoke cigarettes. Participants included 338 English-speaking Latinx adults who smoked cigarettes daily (Mage = 35.5 years; SD = 8.65; age range 18–61; 37.3% female). Results indicated that approximately 68% of male and 61% of female smokers scored above established clinical cutoffs for hazardous and harmful alcohol use and possible alcohol dependence. Moreover, alcohol use severity was associated with increased risk for cigarette dependence, perceived barriers for quitting, and more problematic symptoms when trying to quit. Alcohol use severity was also related to more severe anxiety and depressive symptoms. Overall, the current findings suggest that intervening to reduce alcohol use severity may be important to improving smoking cessation and mental health among Latinx persons who smoke. Dual use of combustible cannabis and nicotine is related to worse mental health symptoms (MHS); however, little is known about MHS among those who vape cannabis and nicotine. The current study aimed to determine if dual use of cannabis and nicotine vapes is associated with worse MHS compared to single use and to identify correlates of MHS for dual users. We used Amazon Mechanical Turk to survey adults (N = 492) who used nicotine or cannabis vapes in the past 30 days on stress, anxiety, depression, vape use behaviors and sociodemographic information. We conducted hierarchical linear regressions to compare MHS between dual vs. single substance vape use and to identify correlates of MHS, including sociodemographic variables and vape use characteristics. The final sample was 37.6% female, 87.6% White, and 11% Hispanic/Latinx with a mean age of 34.15 years. After controlling for sociodemographic characteristics and combustible product use, dual users had significantly higher mean MHS severity than single users. For dual users, younger age and being married were associated with higher symptoms of depression and stress. Holding a medical cannabis card was associated with higher anxiety symptoms. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common disorder that is characterized by systemic and lung inflammation. Notoginsenoside R1 (NGR1) displays anti-inflammatory properties in numerous diseases. We aimed to explore the function and mechanism of NGR1 in COPD. COPD rats were established through cigarette smoke exposure, lipopolysaccharide injection, and cold stimulation. Rat airway smooth muscle cells (ASMCs) were separated and identified. Then, ASMCs were treated with NGR1 (25 or 50 μM) and cigarette smoke extract (CSE). Thereafter, the vitality, proliferation, and migration of ASMCs were measured. Additionally, cell cycle, inflammation-related factors, α-SMA, and PI3K/AKT pathway-related marker expressions of the ASMCs were also detected. Molecular docking experiments were conducted to explore the interaction of NGR1 to PI3K, TGF-β, p65, and AKT. Moreover, 740 Y-P (a PI3K/Akt pathway agonist) were used to validate the mechanism of NGR1 on COPD. NGR1 inhibited the proliferation and migration, but caused cell cycle arrest for CSE-triggered ASMCs. Furthermore, NGR1 not only decreased IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α contents, but also reduced α-SMA expression in CSE-stimulated ASMCs. Moreover, NGR1restrainedTGF-β1 expression, PI3K, p65, and AKT phosphorylation in CSE-stimulated ASMCs. Molecular docking experiments showed NGR1 exhibited a strong binding ability to PI3K, TGF-β1, p65, and AKT. Notably, the effects of NGR1 on the proliferation and migration of CSE-induced ASMCs were reversed by 740 Y-P. Advertisements promoting and discouraging electronic nicotine products (ENPs) are widespread on social media. User interaction is a hallmark feature of social media sites. This study examined how usercomment valence (i.e. positive versus negative comments) influences attitudes toward countermarketing ads, and determinants of ENP abstinence according to the theory of planned behavior (TPB). College students were randomly assigned to one of three conditions, a positive comment condition (n = 121), in which they were shown a YouTube comment section with eight positive comments and two negative comments; a negative comment condition (n = 126), in which they were shown a YouTube comment section with eight negative and two positive comments; and a control condition (n = 128). Then, all groups were shown a YouTube video advocating for ENP abstinence and completed measures about their attitudes toward the ad (Aad), attitudes toward ENP abstinence, injunctive and descriptive norms about ENP abstinence, perceived behavioral control (PBC) toward ENP abstinence, and intention to abstain from ENPs. Results indicated that exposure to negative comments yielded significantly less favorable Aad when compared to the positive condition, but no difference in Aad was observed between the negative and control conditions, or between the positive and control conditions. Further, there were no differences for any determinants of ENP abstinence. Additionally, Aad mediated the effects of negative comments on attitudes toward ENP abstinence, injunctive norms and descriptive norms about ENP abstinence, and behavioral intention. This work attempts to summarize current knowledge on the effects of active and passive smoking of cigarettes, electronic nicotine delivery systems and tobacco heating products on the expression and secretion of oxidative stress and inflammatory response mediators, and on their possible impact on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease development. The literature was searched by the terms: 'smoking', 'active smoking', 'passive smoking', 'main-stream smoke', 'side-stream smoke', 'secondhand smoke', 'cigarette' 'THP', 'tobacco heating product', 'ENDS', 'electronic nicotine delivery system', 'e-cigarette', 'electronic cigarette', oxidative stress', inflammatory response' and 'gene expression'. Cigarette smoking (active and passive) induces oxidative stress and inflammatory response in the airways. We present the effect of active smoking of e-cigarettes (EC) and heat-not-burn (HnB) products on the increased expression and secretion of oxidative stress and inflammatory response markers. However, there is only a limited number of studies on the effect of their second-hand smoking, and those available mainly describe aerosol composition. The literature provides data which confirm that active and passive cigarette smoking induces oxidative stress and inflammatory response in the airways and is a key risk factor of COPD development. Currently, there is a limited number of data about ENDS and THP active and passive smoking effects on the health of smokers and never-smokers. It is particularly important to assess the effect of such products during long-term use by never-smokers who choose them as the first type of cigarettes, and for never-smokers who are passively exposed to their aerosol. Little cigars or cigarillos (LCCs) are frequently modified to smoke cannabis ("blunts") by youth and young adults. This study investigated whether young blunt users who are otherwise nicotine-naïve are more likely to initiate other tobacco products compared to never blunt users. Data were from four waves of the Truth Longitudinal Cohort (TLC), a national probability-based sample of youth and young adults (aged 15-24 years) in the United States (Wave 1: January—April 2017; Wave 2: February—May 2018; Wave 3: February—May 2019; Wave 4: September—December 2019). The sample was restricted to nicotine naïve respondents at Wave 1 with possible ever use of blunts (N = 5,284). Logistic regression analyses tested whether ever blunt use at Wave 1 predicted initiation of nicotine products by Wave 4, controlling for established risk factors. Compared to never-blunt users, ever users of blunts at Wave 1 had significantly higher odds of ever using cigars (OR: 4.74; 95% CI: 1.80-12.47; p = 0.002), e-cigarettes (OR: 4.66; 95% CI: 2.42-8.95; p < 0.001), cigarettes (OR: 3.02; 95% CI: 1.17-7.84, p = 0.023), or hookah (OR: 3.47; 95% CI: 1.07-11.29, p = 0.039) by Wave 4. Cannabis (never blunt) use by Wave 1 predicted ever use of e-cigarettes (OR: 3.45, 95% CI: 2.38-5.02, p < 0.001), cigarettes (OR: 3.81; 95% CI: 2.26-6.43, p < 0.001), or hookah (OR: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.12-4.05, p = 0.021) by Wave 4. Youth use of electronic cigarettes ("e-cigarettes") is an ongoing concern. Vaping is usually assumed to be of nicotine, but survey responses may also include vaping of non-nicotine substances (particularly cannabis), which can impose different risks. The current study quantifies the proportions of nicotine-specific and cannabis-specific vaping among adolescents. Data from the Monitoring the Future (MTF) 2021 survey were analyzed with respect to the substance vaped: nicotine, cannabis, or flavoring only. Past-30-day (P30D) nicotine-specific vaping (exclusively, or also having vaped other substances) and cannabis-specific vaping were calculated. Results were also broken down by grade level, cigarette smoking history (current, former, or never), and frequency of e-cigarette use (<20 vs. 20+ days in P30D). Among 4706 P30D e-cigarette users, 84.2% vaped nicotine; the remaining 15.8% reported not vaping any nicotine in P30D. Cannabis vaping was reported by 48.4% of P30D vapers. Vaping both nicotine and cannabis in P30D was more common in current and former smokers than in never-smokers, and in frequent vapers (of any substance). Conversely, never-smokers were more commonly vaping cannabis but not nicotine, compared to current and former smokers. Supplementary NYTS 2022 analyses were consistent with these findings. A notable proportion of self-reported P30D vapers reported not vaping nicotine; nearly half vaped cannabis. Capturing the variety of substances used in vaping devices is imperative for accurate public health surveillance of both nicotine and cannabis vaping among US adolescents, considering their different respective harms and regulatory frameworks. Addiction is an important global health issue, impacting also addicts environment and society. Empathy plays crucial role in establishing successful social relationships and is a fundamental component of social life. The aim of this study is to investigate how nicotine preferring (NP) strain and oral forced nicotine administration affects empathy-like behaviour in rats, with gender differences. Sprague-Dawley NP rats (10 males/10 females) and wild-type control rats (10 males/10 females) were used. Behavioural tests were administered to all rats before and after oral forced nicotine administration. The behavioural tests were completed in the fourth week of nicotine administration. Anxiety levels that could affect empathy-like behaviour were evaluated with open field, elevated plus maze tests and with blood cortisol levels. Oxytocin receptor and arginine vasopressin (AVP) levels, which have been shown to be related to empathy-like behaviour, were examined in the prefrontal cortex and amygdala regions using the enzyme-linked immunoassay method. It was observed that males from the NP strain showed less empathy-like behaviour than all other groups, and nicotine administration did not cause a significant change in the results. Higher levels of locomotor activity (LA) were found in control females than in all other groups. Blood nicotine and corticosterone levels were higher in NP rats. No significant differences were found in AVP and oxytocin receptor levels in the prefrontal cortex and amygdala. To assess the association of regional socioeconomic deprivation and nicotine use, survey data from 17,877 pupils aged 9–17 years were analysed. Lifetime use of combustible, e-cigarettes, and both products were the outcome variables. The German Index of Socioeconomic Deprivation was the exposure variable. Logistic regression models controlling for age, gender, school type, and sensation seeking were used to examine associations between regional socioeconomic deprivation and nicotine use. Ever use of combustible cigarettes was 17.8%, of e-cigarettes 19.6%, and of both products 13.4%. Compared to the most affluent area, the adjusted odds ratio of combustible cigarette use in the most deprived area was 2.24 (95% CI: 1.67–3.00), of e-cigarette use 1.56 (95% CI: 1.20–2.03), and of poly use 1.91 (95% CI: 1.36–2.69). Nicotine use among young people across ages and especially in socioeconomic-deprived areas was widespread.
