Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes are the predominant bacterial phyla colonizing the healthy human gut. Accumulating evidence suggests that dietary fiber plays a crucial role in host health, yet most studies have focused on how the dietary fiber affects health through gut Bacteroides. More recently, gut Firmicutes have been found to possess many genes responsible for fermenting dietary fiber, and could also interact with the intestinal mucosa and thereby contribute to homeostasis. Consequently, the relationship between dietary fiber and Firmicutes is of interest, as well as the role of Firmicutes in host health. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge regarding the molecular mechanism of dietary fiber degradation by gut Firmicutes and explain the communication pathway of the dietary fiber-Firmicutes-host axis, and the beneficial effects of dietary fiber-induced Firmicutes and their metabolites on health. A better understanding of the dialogue sustained by the dietary fiber-Firmicutes axis and the host could provide new insights into probiotic therapy and novel dietary interventions aimed at increasing the abundance of Firmicutes (such as Faecalibacterium, Lactobacillus, and Roseburia) to promote health. Dietary fiber-induced gut Firmicutes and their metabolites exhibit relevant health-promoting functions. Most of dietary fiber have a great effect on gut Firmicutes. Mechanisms of dietary fiber uptake by gut Firmicutes are outlined. Nowadays, consumers are increasingly aware of the relationship between diet and health, showing a greater preference of products from natural origin. In the last decade, seaweeds have outlined as one of the natural sources with more potential to obtain bioactive carbohydrates. Numerous seaweed polysaccharides have aroused the interest of the scientific community, due to their biological activities and their high potential on biomedical, functional food and technological applications. To obtain polysaccharides from seaweeds, it is necessary to find methodologies that improve both yield and quality and that they are profitable. Nowadays, environmentally friendly extraction technologies are a viable alternative to conventional methods for obtaining these products, providing several advantages like reduced number of solvents, energy and time. On the other hand, chemical modification of their structure is a useful approach to improve their solubility and biological properties, and thus enhance the extent of their potential applications since some uses of polysaccharides are still limited. The present review aimed to compile current information about the most relevant seaweed polysaccharides, available extraction and modification methods, as well as a summary of their biological activities, to evaluate knowledge gaps and future trends for the industrial applications of these compounds. Food nutrients plays a crucial role in human health, especially in gastrointestinal (GI) health. The effect of food nutrients on human health mainly depends on the digestion and fermentation process in the GI tract. In vitro GI digestion and fermentation models had the advantages of reproducibility, simplicity, universality, and could integrally simulate the in vivo conditions to mimic oral, gastric, small intestinal and large intestinal digestive processes. They could not only predict the relationship among material composition, structure and digestive characteristics, but also evaluate the bioavailability of material components and the impact of digestive metabolites on GI health. This review systematicly summarized the current state of the in vitro simulation models, and made detailed descriptions for their applications, advantages and disadvantages, and specially their applications in food carbohydrates. In addition, it also provided the suggestions for the improvement of in vitro models and firstly proposed to establish a set of standardized methods of in vitro dynamic digestion and fermentation conditions for food carbohydrates, which were in order to further evaluate more effects of the nutrients on human health in future. The present study aimed to evaluate the association between presence and severity of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and the presence of subclinical coronary artery disease (CAD) as assessed by coronary calcium score. Medline, Cochrane, and Google Scholar databases were searched. The presence of coronary artery calcification (CAC) and CAC score were assessed. Irrespective of the cut-off value of apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI) (5 or 15 events/h), patients in the OSA group had higher rate of CAC presence and mean CAC score than those in the control group. Subgroup analyses of patients monitored with home sleep apnoea testing (HSAT) or in-hospital/laboratory polysomnography showed that the OSA group had higher rate of CAC presence and mean CAC score than the control group, except in the comparison of mean CAC score between AHI ≥5 vs. <5 events/h for patients using HSAT, which was not significant. Pair-wise comparison showed that CAC score may increase with increased OSA severity. In participants without symptomatic coronary disease, the presence of OSA was associated with the presence and extent of CAC. Gallic acid or its alkyl ester was added in combination with α-tocopherol in the oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion to investigate their interaction in emulsions. Results showed that all the tested gallate esters (propyl, octyl and dodecyl gallate) showed synergistic antioxidant activities with α-tocopherol, and propyl gallate with the shortest alkyl chain length possessed the highest synergistic ability. The interaction efficiency was consistent with the order of their apparent static quenching constants obtained from fluorescence quenching studies. This suggested that the antioxidant synergy could be due to their molecular interactions. With further confirmation by antioxidant decomposition studies, the mechanism for such antioxidant synergy in O/W emulsions was proposed to begin with the initial quick oxidation of α-tocopherol into α-tocopherol quinine, resulting in its oriented exposure to the interfacial membrane of O/W emulsion and, subsequently, being reduced by propyl gallate esters in the interfacial layer to regenerate α-tocopherol. In patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), treatment using ticagrelor demonstrated significant ischemic benefits over clopidogrel; however, it was associated with increased bleeding complications leading to frequent de-escalation to clopidogrel. The objective of the present study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of de-escalation in early and late phase after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We performed a retrospective study of 4678 ACS patients from March 2016 to April 2017 who initially received ticagrelor then de-escalated to clopidogrel and categorized them into Group 1: early phase (1–30 days) and Group 2: late phase (>30 days–1 year) switching groups. The primary efficacy endpoints included cardiovascular death, definite/probable stent thrombosis, myocardial infarction, unplanned revascularization, and stroke. The safety endpoint was Bleeding Academic Research Consortium classification 3 or 5 bleeding events within 1 year after PCI. The incidence of switching occurred in 1019 patients; 380 (37.3%) in Group 1 (median 14 days, interquartile range 4–30 days) versus 639 (62.7%) in Group 2 (median 180 days, interquartile range 90–270 days). The ischemic endpoints occurred in 53 (13.9%) patients in Group 1 versus 35 (5.4%) in Group 2 (HR 1.93,95%CI 1.22–3.08, p <.0001). There were no significant differences of major bleeding events (HR 0.91; 95%CI, 0.58–1.43, p =.90) seen between the groups. The main cause for switching between the two groups was due to BARC 1 or 2 bleeding types. Early de-escalation from ticagrelor to clopidogrel during the initial 30 days after ACS was associated with higher risk of ischemic events when compared with switching beyond 30 days. Diabetes mellitus (DM) and its complications are major public health concerns which strongly influence the quality of humans' life. Modification of gut microbiota has been widely used for the management of diabetes. In this review, the relationship between diabetes and gut microbiota, as well as the effects of different dietary components and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) on gut microflora are summarized. Dietary compounds and TCM possessing bioactive components (fiber and phytochemicals) first change the composition of gut microbiota (inhibiting pathogens and promoting the beneficial bacteria growth) and then influence the production of their metabolites, which would further modify the intestinal environment through inhibiting the production of detrimental compounds (such as lipopolysaccharide, hydrogen sulfide, indol, etc.). Importantly, metabolites (short chain fatty acids and other bioactive components) fermented/degraded by gut microbiota can target multiple pathways in intestine, liver, pancreas, etc., resulting in the improvement of gut health, glycemic control, lipids profile, insulin resistance and inflammation. Furthermore, understanding the interaction between different dietary components and gut microbiota, as well as underlying mechanisms would help design different diet formula for the management of diabetes. Further researches could focus on the combination of different dietary components for preventing and treating diabetes, based on the principle of "multiple components against multiple targets" from the perspective of gut microbiota. The human gut is colonized with a vast and diverse microbial ecosystem, and these bacteria play fundamental roles in the well being of our bodies. Gut-associated lymphoid tissues, the largest mucosal immune system, should never be overlooked for their profound effect in maintaining the host immunity. Therefore, we discussed the relationship between gut immunity and host health, primarily from two aspects: the homeostasis of gut microbiota, and the function of gut-associated lymphoid tissues. Polysaccharides, widely concerned as bioactive macromolecules in recent centuries, have been proved to benefit the intestinal health. Dietary polysaccharides can improve the ratio of probiotics, regulate the intestinal microenvironment like decreasing the gut pH, and stimulate the macrophages or lymphocytes in gut tissues to fight against diseases like cancer. Based on various experimental and clinical evidence, the impacts of dietary polysaccharides on intestinal health are summarized, in order to reveal the possible immunomodulatory mechanisms of polysaccharides. Phyto-estrogens are plant-derived compounds that can exert various estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects, and are usually used as a natural alternative to estrogen replacement due to their health benefits, including a lowered risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, breast cancer, and menopausal symptoms. Phyto-estrogens are also considered as endocrine disruptors due to their structure similar to human female hormone 17-β oestradiol. However, the issue of whether phyto-estrogens are beneficial or harmful to human health remains unknown, as this may depend on the dose, form, level and duration of administration of phyto-estrogens, and influence by genetics, metabolism, gut physiology, age, diet, and the health status of individuals. Clarification on this issue is necessary for the sake of their two-side effects on human health and rapidly increasing global consumption of phyto-estrogens. To assess effects of heated edible oils on intake of trans fatty acids (TFAs); the formation of TFAs in cooking conditions was investigated by a frying system model, in which chicken fillet was fried in a commercial corn oil at 170 °C, for 12 frying cycles. The main TFAs detected in chicken fillet were trans C18:2 fatty acids (FAs) and trans C18:3 FAs, which exhibited no significant differences among the frying cycles. Besides, the content of trans C18:1 FAs were very low in all samples on different frying cycles. The intake of TFAs was estimated to be 0.06 g/100 g when chicken fillet fried in this process was consumed. These results suggest that an ordinary frying process upon a commercial corn oil has little impact on the daily TFAs intake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A GC-MS method based on the profiling of sterol peaks has been applied first for the discrimination of different Ganoderma species and their region. Six common sterol peaks were found and identified to be the discriminant variables. Pattern recognition analyses such as hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and discriminant analysis (DA) were used to deal with the data set of sterol profiles, and the results showed that there are definite differences among the different Ganoderma samples. This could provide another approach for the classification of Ganoderma samples in addition to conventional methods based on the profiling of triterpenoids and polysaccharides. Many researches show that polysaccharides derived from fungi and plants have strong pharmacological activities such as enhancing the organism immune and anti-tumor function, and have few toxic and side effects. So the polysaccharides show a wide application prospect in the prevention and therapy of tumor. The tumor microenvironment consists of tumor cells and tumor cells' surrounding environment. The tumor microenvironment not only plays a key role in the development of tumor, but also is a potential treasure for searching new ways to treat tumor.
