Organic compounds pose significant environmental concerns, including groundwater contamination. Clays are commonly used as liners to prevent contaminant permeation into the groundwater tables, necessitating an understanding of clay's behavior in the presence of organic compounds. The presence of organic contaminants results in changes in the dielectric constant of pore fluid, which influences the interparticle energies and double layer thickness in the soil-pore fluid system. This study aims to elucidate the mechanisms of these changes by examining the response of smectite and kaolinite to variations in the dielectric constant. Experimental tests, including Atterberg limits, unconfined compression strength, water adsorption, sedimentation, pH, and XRD, were performed on clay samples at different concentrations of water-isopropyl alcohol mixtures. Results indicate that smectite exhibits higher Atterberg limits and water adsorption capacity compared to kaolinite. Smectite also shows more pronounced changes in response to decreasing dielectric constant. Conversely, changes in kaolinite's behavior were attributed to variations in pore fluid viscosity and dipole moment. These findings emphasize the importance of considering viscosity and dipole moment alongside dielectric constant in predicting kaolinite behavior. Overall, this study enhances the understanding of how variations in pore fluid dielectric constant affect the geotechnical and geo-environmental behavior of smectite and kaolinite. Recent advancements in analytical chemistry and data analyses via high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) are evolving scientific understanding of the potential totality of organic chemical exposure and pollutant risk. This review addresses the importance of HRMS approaches, namely suspect screening and nontarget chemical analyses, to the realm of phytoremediation. These analytical approaches are not without caveats and constraints, but they provide an opportunity to understand in greater totality how plant-based technologies contribute, mitigate, and reduce organic chemical exposure across scales of experimental and system-level studies. These analytical tools can enlighten the complexity and efficacy of plant-contaminant system design and expand our understanding of biogenic and anthropogenic chemicals at work in phytoremediation systems. Advances in data analytics from biological sciences, such as metabolomics, are crucial to HRMS analysis. This review provides an overview of targeted, suspect screening, and nontarget HRMS approaches, summarizes the expanding knowledge of regulated and unregulated organic chemicals in the environment, addresses requisite HRMS instrumentation, analysis cost, uncertainty, and data processing techniques, and offers potential bridges of HRMS analyses to phytoremediation research and application. Despite many studies on phytoremediation of soils contaminated with either heavy metals or organics, little information is available on the effectiveness of phytoremediation of co-occurring metal and organic pollutants especially by using wetland species.Phragmites australisis a common wetland plant and its potential for phytoremediation of cadmium pentachlorophenol (Cd-PCP) co-contaminated soil was investigated. A greenhouse study was executed to elucidate the effects of Cd (0, 10, and 20 mg kg−1) without or with PCP (0, 50, and 250 mg kg−1) on the growth of the wetland plantP. australisand its uptake, accumulation and removal of pollutant from soils. After 75 days, plant biomass was significantly influenced by interaction of Cd and PCP and the effect of Cd on plant growth being stronger than that of PCP. Coexistence of PCP at low level lessened Cd toxicity to plants, resulting in improved plant growth and increased Cd accumulation in plant tissues. The dissipation of PCP in soils was significantly influenced by interactions of Cd, PCP and plant presence or absence. The authors summarize the scientific literature on toxic organic microcontaminants in vegetables published during the last 15 years. A wide range of persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic organic pollutants have been studied, namely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), phthalic acid esters (PAEs), and perfluorinated substances. The available literature data covers the occurrence of organic contaminants in vegetables and the subsequent human exposure, through ingestion. Benzo[a]pyrene equivalents (BaPeq) were calculated following the concentrations of individual PAH in the literature and then compared. This review also summarizes Toxic Equivalent Concentrations (TEQ) and daily intake of PCDD/Fs, PCBs, and PBDEs through vegetable consumption. Temporal and spatial variations in contaminants concentrations are discussed. The existing scientific literature is critically evaluated regarding gaps, implications, and needs for future research. Contamination of foods with trimethyldiphenylmethanes is reported and the origin is shown to be migration from food packaging materials of which the use of recycled carbonless copy paper was found to be the major source. This chemical is one of the solvents used in the carbonless copy paper and its presence in food and the environment has not been previously identified. In this paper we have pursued previous studies on diisopropylnaphthalenes and hydrogenated terphenyls contamination from packaging and now report the identification of this new food contaminant and present evidence of its source. Solid foods such as egg pasta, barley coffee and rice were analysed by GC/MS and a mean concentration of 18?µg/kg of trimethyldiphenylmethanes was found. Extracts from carbonless copy paper were analysed by proton NMR to characterize the trimethyldiphenylmethanes. Since trimethyldiphenylmethanes are found in solid food together with diisopropylnaphthalenes, and considering their similar chemical character, they may follow the same migration pathway as one another. Adsorption mechanisms of toxic non-ionic organic contaminants (NOCs), aniline and nitrobenzene, with natural-zeolite and organo-zeolite (OZ) were investigated in both batch and continuous systems. In batch tests, the adsorption capacity of aniline and nitrobenzene onto natural zeolite surface is very low or almost nil but becomes significant upon modifying the zeolite surface by hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA). A partitioning mechanism is proposed to be responsible for the adsorption of NOCs onto OZ. The effectiveness of the partitioning mechanism is directly connected with hydrophobic properties of the NOCs. The column tests were carried out as an indicator for continuous system. The breakthrough curves were constructed for OZ/NOC system and the adsorption capacity of NOCs onto OZ under the present conditions were determined as 2.36 and 325 mg per gram of OZ, for aniline and nitrobenzene, respectively.
