To respond to the various issues of conventional drying (textural defects of collapse-shrinkage and case hardening, microbiological contamination, poor rehydrability, degradation of active molecules caused by high wet-bulb temperature, weak drying kinetics, and marketing difficulty), swell-drying has proven high relevance in combining conventional drying processes with the Instant Controlled Pressure Drop (D.I.C.). The international team of "Research & Engineering Platform for intensifying Drying Processes (REPID)" has studied phenomenological models and experimental trials combining D.I.C. with new Interval Hyper-Active Drying (IHAD) processes. Currently, IHAD includes interval starting accessibility drying (ISAD), interval infrared airflow drying (IIRAD), and interval microwave airflow drying (IMAD). All these "interval operations" are sandwiched into cycles, each comprising double separate independent mechanisms; a short, hyper-focused active period (that generates and sweeps out vapor to the surrounding environment) alternated by a passive period of internal water diffusion/moisture homogenization. Since surface evaporation is highly intensive, the wet-bulb temperature stays low, although highly effective drying kinetics. Thus, the operation results in avoiding biochemical damage risks. Coupled with the D.I.C. texturing-decontamination, these drying operations are very effective in terms of drying kinetics, energy consumption, and product quality of heat-sensitive solids. Although restricting environmental quality values for organotin compounds (OTs) are set by Directive 2013/39/EU of the European Parliament, marine environment remains being affected due to maritime circulation at global scale. Fish and seafood accumulate OTs, making fish and seafood consumption the main source of OTs in humans. Because of the fish and seafood matrices complexity and the required low limits of detection, a robust and fast procedure for the quantification of OTs in fish and seafood, using ultrasound-assisted extraction and gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry, was validated and applied. Detection (2.7 µg Sn kg−1) and quantification (8.0 µg Sn kg−1) limits, repeatability and intermediate precision (<10%), accuracy by analysing ERM®-CE477 Mussel Tissue and analytical recoveries (65–122%) were assessed. Multivariate analysis shown that the matrix effect for some OTs displayed good negative correlation with the fat and protein content. This study is aimed at comparing swell drying versus conventional shade drying and optimizing the texturing by instant controlled pressure drop (DIC) of green okra pods. Differences in quality attributes such as content of flavonoids, carotenoids, and chlorophyll pigments, functional characteristics such as the antioxidant activity (AOA), microstructure and relative expansion ratio of dried okra pods were considered. The DIC processing parameters were the saturated steam pressure (0.2-0.6 MPa) and duration (40-60 s). A 2-parameter, 5-level central composite rotatable design was selected for establishing the experimental trials. They represent 8 factorial and star trials, and five repetitions of central/middle point of the square edges. Significant variations in total phenolic and flavonoid contents, carotenoids, antioxidant activity, and chlorophyll pigments were observed between swell-dried and conventional shadow dried okra pods. An increase of 25% and 99% was respectively observed for the relative expansion ratio and flavonoid content in swell dried okra pods compared with conventional shadow dried ones. The microstructure observations showed a significantly more porous open solid matrix of swell-dried okra pods compared to the compact/dense solid matrix of the conventional shadow dried okra pods. The optimum conditions of DIC-texturing were found to be 0.4 MPa for 50 s exhibiting the highest values of total phenolic content, flavonoids, antioxidant activity, and chlorophyll pigments with good preservation of the carotenoid content. The aim of this article is to contribute to the literature on the implementation of worldwide freedom of information (FOI) laws, as observed in Spanish local governments, by hypothesizing and obtaining empirical evidence that municipal size and institutional support are differentiating elements in the implementation process. This evidence also reveals that factors such as municipal budget surplus, low levels of borrowing, the brevity of time elapsed from promulgation of the law to its implementation and political support from the mayor's office are all positively associated with the level of institutional support for local governments' implementation of FOI laws. This article focuses on a little-explored area of research, seeking to explain how political changes influence the participation of citizens in the social networks of local governments. In the context of the recent upsurge of anti-system movements and political parties in the European Union, we analyse a new set of data on participation via local governments' Facebook pages during a turbulent period in European politics. The results obtained show that when a local government is affected by changes in political competition there is a greater degree of citizens' engagement through social networks. Our analytical framework shows that this increased engagement is directly associated with the vulnerability of political parties, especially when the governing party loses its absolute majority and is constrained or prevented from carrying out political initiatives. A detailed geomorphological map of the Sierra del Aramo (Asturian Central Massif) is presented at a scale of 1:25,000. The Sierra del Aramo is one of the major middle-altitude mountains of the Asturian Central Massif (maximum altitude 1,791 m a.s.l.). Specifically, the lithology and the structural landforms, as well as karst, fluvial, periglacial and other landforms and deposits, have been mapped based on meticulous fieldwork, photointerpretation and a geographic information system. The final printing has been drawn carefully following the RCP 77 geomorphological mapping system of the French CNRS to achieve a graphic design that adequately expresses the true nature of the landforms. Thus, the geomorphological map is a precise scientific tool that serves as a basis for geoheritage studies, and the analysis of natural hazards; in short, for territorial planning. The role of community manager is gaining importance as the proper usage of social media becomes a key factor for achieving more active involvement of citizens in social and political issues. Focused on Spanish local governments and in line with the literature of Excellence Theory, this paper aims to analyze whether some characteristics of the community manager function are determinant in their fostering of citizens’ online engagement via social media. In particular ‘independence’, ‘having access to the dominant coalition’, ‘gender diversity’, ‘continuous training’ and ‘culture of the organization’ are the characteristics considered in this paper. As to the main findings, this study confirms that community managers have not as yet achieved their goal of embedding the use of social media by citizens as a means of establishing more direct contact with their local governments. Moreover, in line with Excellence Theory, community managers of local governments should be aware of the importance of having direct access to key managers of the organization in order to better achieve the objectives of the organization and, more specifically, to increase citizens’ engagement. Furthermore, continuous training in issues related to social media truly helps develop the skills and potential of community managers. Likewise, an excellent communication department should rely on good professionals no matter their gender, and, in this sense, the gender of community managers is not a significant factor in their performance. However, the results of this study also reveal that in the case of public sector community managers, an authoritarian culture seems to be a determining factor for obtaining better results in enhancing citizens’ engagement. The impacts of total hot air drying (THD) and the swell-drying process (SD), which is hot air drying coupled with an instant controlled pressure drop DIC process, on the drying kinetics and adsorption isotherm behavior, were determined in the case of Moroccan peppers. Drying kinetics were studied through a model that takes into account the starting accessibility and the internal diffusion model with Fick's law. Adsorption experimental data were obtained by using the gravimetric method at 25, 40, and 50°C. Data were fitted to the GAB, Halsey, and Oswin models. Studied responses were: effective diffusivity (Deff), starting accessibility (δWs), monolayer moisture content (Xm), specific surface area (σ), internal porosity (ϵ), and microstructure. Mean relative percentage deviation (E) and root mean square (RMS) were used to evaluate the fitting of models. Results showed that: pepper adsorption isotherms followed the type II isotherm curve;the equilibrium moisture content (Xeq) depended on the temperature and the drying method; the GAB and Halsey models fitted well the experimental data; at selected conditions of the DIC treatment (0.35 MPa and 5 s), the monolayer moisture content (Xm), the specific surface area (σ), and the internal porosity values were higher than those of THD samples; the DIC process intensified the drying operation, by increasing the effective diffusivity and the starting accessibility. Although the DIC process improves the drying kinetics, this behavior could be ignored related to a higher aw. This study shows that, thanks to the new expanded structure obtained by the DIC process (higher porosity), the adsorption capacities of products are improved (awis reduced). This study assesses the similarities and differences in the potential wine tourist market, distinguishing between the actual market (AM) and the people “willing to practise wine tourism” (WP). This kind of analysis introduces a new aspect with regards to previous studies which were focused primarily on the AM, which is to say, on interviewing tourists at wineries. The information analysed has been obtained by way of personal interviews with residents of the city of Valencia (Spain). The number of valid interviews was 320. The results indicate that the AM of wine tourists in Valencia comprises 48.5% of the population, while the WP market amounts to 28.2%. Both the AM and those willing to practise wine tourism show considerable interest in wine and cultural heritage. They differ, however, in terms of leisure. There is also agreement among around 60% who indicate that they have paid or would pay around €8 to visit a winery. Among the differences, it is worth noting that the AM has a higher percentage of middle-aged men with university studies and mid-high to high incomes; furthermore, the group is largely made up of individuals who consume wine on a daily basis and have considerable interest and knowledge of the wine world. Introduction and objectives. Emergency departments (EDs) in Spanish hospitals daily attend a large number of patients for adverse reactions or clinical complications resulting from cocaine use. After discharge, some of these patients revisit the ED for the same reason within a year. The objective of the present study was to quantify the rate of such revisits and identify the factors associated with them. Method. We performed a retrospective, multicenter study with cohort follow-up and without a control group, conducted in the EDs of six Spanish hospitals during 12 months (January-December 2009). We included all ED patients attended for cocaine-related symptoms who reported recent cocaine use and those with cocaine-positive urine analysis by immunoassay without declared consumption. Twelve independent variables assessed for each hospital ED were collected: sex, age, place of consumption, month, day, and time of consumption, mode of arrival at the ED, discharge diagnosis, psychiatric assessment on the ED episode, concomitant drugs, destination on discharge, and history of previous ED visits related with drug use and alcohol use. The dependent variable was a subsequent visit to the ED associated with drug use, identified using the computerized hospital admissions system. Results. The study included 807 patients, of whom 6.7% revisited the ED within 30 days, 11.9% within 3 months and 18.9% within 1 year. The variables significantly associated with ED revisits were: presence of clinical manifestations directly related to cocaine (p < 0.05), ED attendance on a working day (p < 0.05), history of ED visits related with the consumption of alcohol (p < 0.001) or drugs (p < 0.001), and the need for urgent consultation with a psychiatrist (p < 0.001), although only the last four were independent predictors in multivariate analysis. We derived a score based on these variables to predict risk of revisits (MARRIED-score, ranging from 0 to 400 points), which had a reasonably good predictive value for revisit (area under ROC of 0.75; 95% CI 0.71-0.79). The present study was undertaken to determine if differences exist in the pharmacokinetic parameters of oral ranitidine caused by gender and stage of the menstrual cycle. The study was performed in two steps, in the first a pharmacokinetic study was performed on 10 men (average age 35.5 yrs) and 10 women (average age 34.7 yrs) during the follicular phase, and in the second the pharmacokinetic study was performed only on the same women in their luteal phase. Subjects received a tablet dose of 300 mg ranitidine, and blood samples were drawn at several times after its ingestion. Plasma ranitidine concentration was determined by high performance liquid chromatography. Comparison of the pharmacokinetic parameters of women and men revealed statistically significant differences both in distribution volume (Vd) with values of 2.0 and 6.3 l/kg, Area Under Curve (AUC) with values of 7312.15 and 11471.94 ng/ml/h, and clearance (CLt) with values of 0.65 and 0.59 l/kg/h, respectively. Several pharmacokinetic parameters in women were different in the follicular compared to the luteal phase; for example, Vd was 2.0 and 5.6 l/kg, AUC was 7312.15 and 5195.83 ng/ml/h, and CLt was 0.65 and 0.97 l/kg/h, in the respective phases. Moreover, the maximum concentration (Cmax) was 1086 ng/ml in the follicular vs. 864 ng/ml in the luteal phase. The first study detected differences between men and women in several pharmacokinetic parameters, mainly those indicative of drug availability, for example, Vd, AUC, and CLt. Comparison of data obtained in the follicular phase with those obtained in the luteal phase revealed differences in most pharmacokinetic parameters, which is seemingly indicative of the characteristic physiological changes associated with the luteal phase that largely affect the kinetics and availability of drugs such as ranitidine.
