Sleep insufficiency is a risk factor for mental and physical ill-health. In recent years, research has attributed sleep insufficiency to problematic smartphone use (PSU). In addition, research has indicated a relationship between sleep and the construct of mental toughness (MT). However, previous research exploring the relationship between sleep, PSU and MT has relied on selfreport measures. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the tentative links between sleep, PSU and MT by gathering objective data. 2053 participants completed measures of sleep quality, PSU and MT. Objective smartphone usage data were collected using pre-installed smartphone applications. A sub-sample of 614 participants provided sleep duration data from validated sleep tracking devices. In line with previous research, sleep quality was found to correlate weakly with both MT and PSU. While several significant correlations emerged when objective data were explored, in all cases, the effect sizes were negligible. This study does not support the claim that PSU has a clinically meaningful impact upon sleep duration. Anterior Cruciate Ligament rehabilitation is a lengthy process and requires appropriate goal setting strategies to help optimize patient and athlete outcomes. From a global perspective, ACL injury incidences are continuing to rise, with Australia and the USA having one of the highest incidences of ACL injury rates in the athletic population. In addition, physiotherapists are expected by their professional regulatory body to effectively use goal setting practices. Theoretical Goal Setting Model consisting of three phases: 1) Pre goal setting phase (empower); 2) goal implementation phase (strive); and 3) goal evaluation phase (attain). This model provides physiotherapists with a useful process so that key aspects of setting goals are considered and incoporporated. This model showcases a necessary path a physiotherapist and patient must journey together in order to enhance rehabilitation outcomes. This model will also advance the physiotherapists' awareness of the multi-stages of the patients goal desires, intentions and commitment to their rehabilitation. This model is a preliminary attempt to guide both practice, teaching, and research to ensure that goal setting practices in ACL rehabilitation are given an appropriate rehabilitative platform. A number of recent studies have demonstrated that adolescents consider the future consequences (CFC) of behaviours domain-specifically. In other words, rather than being a "future orientated person," it appears that the orientation varies within individuals, depending on the domain in question. The present study matched data gathered in Scottish school children (N = 451) on consideration of four future domains (Health and Well-being, Finances, Academics, and Global Warming) with sociodemographic and academic attainment data provided by Local Government. Results showed that deprivation was significantly related to academic attainment, and that this relationship was partially mediated by the combined effects of academic self-efficacy and on consideration of future consequences—academic. Further, domain specificity was supported by the fact that scores for consideration of future consequences—health and well-being,—finance, and—global warming did not partially mediate the deprivation-attainment relationship. This article takes Margaret Meek Spencer's 1988 pamphlet "How Texts Teach What Readers Learn" to frame a discussion about the purpose of English Literature in English secondary schools. The primary data informing this article is taken from original interviews with ten Heads of English departments in English secondary schools. Henri Lefebvre's framework of conceived, perceived and lived spaces is used to analyse the data to understand how the Heads of Department conceptualise the place and purpose of English Literature in their schools. The views of the Heads of English are then discussed in light of Meek Spencer's work, highlighting how the current curriculum for English Literature produces a subject which is at odds with her ideas and contemporary views of the English curriculum and its purpose. The article concludes with some suggestions about how the teaching of English Literature in schools can be developed so that it is more in line with Meek Spencer's ideas, is more socially just and more ambitious. Research into temporal psychology, and in particular its relationship with health behaviors, has grown exponentially in recent years. Accordingly, studies have shown that how individuals think and feel about the past, present, and future, is significantly related to alcohol-use behaviors. This has been shown to be particularly true where studies have applied person-centered analyses rather than just bivariate analyses. The present study sought to examine the relationship between scores on one temporal psychology measure (The Domain-Specific Consideration of Future Consequences [CFC] scale) and alcohol use behaviors in a large sample of adolescents in the United Kingdom (N = 2,199; 42.4% female). Scores on the CFC measure were operationalized both domain-specifically, and by means of cluster analyses. In bivariate analyses, reduced likelihood of past month consumption of a full drink and Heavy Episodic Drinking were significantly associated with CFC-scores, but did not appear to be domain-specific. In unadjusted analyses, CFC cluster membership was significantly related to alcohol use variables. However, when adjusted for sex, location, and sensation seeking, the result for Heavy Episodic Drinking became non-significant. Results are discussed in the context of current temporal psychology. In this paper published in the American Journal of Psychotherapy in 1956, John Weir Perry lays out a Jungian view of schizophrenia as an irruption of symbolic archetypal images and processes into the field of consciousness. These symbols represent the essence of the psychotic process and can point to a healing process. More specifically, the symbols of catatonic schizophrenia almost invariably are found to contain a death and rebirth pattern as illustrated in the case of a hospitalized patient with whom he worked over a period of six months. Changes to education policy in England since 2010 have led teachers to reflect on what and how they teach. This paper presents original data exploring how a small selection (n = 10) of Heads of English in some English secondary schools are accommodating policy changes. Ball's analytic framework developed to explore neoliberal policy enactment in education is used to reveal how Heads of English might be at odds with recent policy changes, particularly regarding the range of text choices in available for examination studies, but are using their limited agency to accommodate their values in practice. Closing the poverty-related attainment gap in schoolchildren is a stated priority for the Scottish Government. In the present study, we examine the poverty-related attainment gap in Glasgow, a city wherein more than half of the 100 most deprived areas in Scotland are to be found. Further, we examine the potential mediating role of school attendance, academic self-efficacy, and future time attitudes (positive and negative) in the relationship between socio-economic status and academic attainment. Participants (N = 3,812) were from 30 High schools in the Glasgow Local Authority area. In the first instance, we examined the mediating role of both academic self-efficacy and school attendance. Then, in a subsample, we further examined the additional potential of both positive and negative time attitudes to mediate this relationship. Results of Study 1 support the combined partially mediating effect of both academic self-efficacy and higher school attendance on the poverty-attainment relationship. Results of Study 2 show that these variables fully mediate the poverty-attainment relationship, and further evidence a direct effect of both positive and negative time attitudes on attainment. The direct effects of time attitudes on attainment suggest that this construct may be viable in addressing the poverty-related attainment gap across the social spectrum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To systematically review the effects of exercise interventions that may enhance quality of life (QOL) in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). A systematic search was conducted using five databases up to April 2018. Studies were included if QOL was quantified following an exercise programme for people with a TBI. Methodological quality was assessed using a validated scoring checklist. Two independent reviewers assessed study inclusion and methodological quality. Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria (seven RCTs, six non-RCTs). The median total scores for the quality assessment tool were 26.1 (RCTs), and 21.3 (non-RCTs), out of 33. Eight out of the 13 studies reported improved QOL following an exercise programme. The duration of the interventions varied from 8-12 weeks. The most common programmes involved moderate to vigorous exercise; with a frequency and duration of 3–5 times/week for 30–60 minutes. Due to the diversity of the exercise training interventions, heterogeneity of patient characteristics, multitude of QOL instruments and outcome domains assessed, it was not possible to draw any definitive conclusion about the effectiveness of exercise interventions. Research has demonstrated that induced mental fatigue impairs soccer-specific technical, tactical and physical performance in soccer players. The findings are limited by the lack of elite players and low ecological validity of the tasks used to induce mental fatigue, which do not resemble the cognitive demands of soccer. The current study collected survey data from English academy soccer players (n = 256; age groups - U14 – U23), with questions comprising of five themes (descriptors of physical and mental fatigue, travel, education, match-play and fixture congestion). The survey consisted of multiple choice responses, checkboxes and blinded/unblinded (for duration based questions) 0-100 arbitrary unit (AU) slider scales. Listening to music (81.6% of players), using social media (58.3%) and watching videos (34.3%) were the most common pre-match activities. Pre-match subjective mental fatigue was low (18.7±18.8 AU), and most frequently reported at the end of a match (47±26 AU) and remained elevated 24-hours post-match (36±27 AU). Travel (29±24 AU), fixture congestion (44±25 AU) and education (30±26 AU) demonstrated a low to moderate presence of subjective mental fatigue. These findings provide an overview of activities performed by English academy soccer players pre-match, and demonstrate that mental fatigue is experienced as a result of match-play. Since its publication in 1921, The Teaching of English in England, otherwise known as the Newbolt Report, has informed both the shape of English as a school subject and the discourse about the teaching of English in England. The 1960s saw the report as promoting a cultural heritage rooted in outdated social values; the 1970s explored how it encouraged a version of personal growth through a love of literature. The 1980s returned to issues around social class, which were further developed in the 1990s. More recently there has been a limited reappraisal of the Newbolt Report, crediting it with introducing the modern discourse around English teaching. This paper argues that a deeper understanding of the Newbolt Report would allow teachers to become more engaged with the discourse about English teaching and re-connect this with their values. This paper focuses on a neglected area of school policy and practice: metacognition. As education becomes increasingly evidence-informed policy makers, school leaders and teachers are becoming increasingly research literate and have ready access to an ever-growing range of evidence about 'what works' in schools. Influential sources of evidence, such as the Education Endowment Foundation's Teaching and Learning Toolkit, often indicate that teaching metacognition in schools can have a very positive effect on pupils' outcomes. In this paper, we examine over 50 studies to ascertain the effect of teaching metacognition in schools on pupils' outcomes and their wellbeing. Following our review it is clear that there is strong evidence indicating the when metacognition is effectively taught in schools then there is a very positive effect on pupil outcomes; there is less evidence about the relationship between teaching metacognition and pupil wellbeing, but the evidence which does exist is also very positive. Having identified that teaching metacognition can help improve pupil outcomes in schools, we then pose questions about the English government's attitudes towards evidence-based practice. We ask why the government adopts some policies and strategies which have an international evidence base, while not adopting other policies or strategies which have at least an equally strong evidence base. Research has shown that rates of clinical anxiety levels are higher among young people with an ASD than their typically developing peers. This study conducted an exploratory investigation into the impact of a specifically tailored CBT group programme on anxiety levels in young people with ASD. The 12 week CBT programme was delivered to 12 children with a diagnosis of ASD in a children's disability team in Ireland. An embedded mixed methods design was utilised and inferences were drawn by collecting and analysing quantitative and qualitative data separately. Findings indicate CBT can be delivered successfully to a group of children with ASD. As is the nature of an embedded design, quantitative findings are reported as supportive evidence for the qualitative findings of this study. The positive preliminary findings suggest a rigorous, large scale evaluation is needed to determine the overall effectiveness of the programme with this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) underlie resistance to therapy. Cancer develops only in the context of failing immunosurveillance, and stem cells occupy immune privileged microenvironments. Recent evidence demonstrates that CSCs borrow immune privilege from their normal counterparts. However, low doses of doxorubicin can target CSCs by restoring anticancer immunity. Background:Scores on temporal psychology measures continue to be associated with alcohol-related problems; however, few studies have examined these associations using more than one temporal psychology instrument. This omission is potentially problematic as not all instruments measure the same dimensions of temporal psychology. The present study aimed to address this gap in the literature. Methods:Participants (N = 410) were opportunistically sampled from a University in the United Kingdom and completed the following questionnaires: The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test; The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; The Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory; The Temporal Focus Scale; The Adolescent Time Inventory-Time Attitudes Scale; and The Consideration of Future Consequences Scale-14. Results:Results showed weak to moderate correlations (with one exception, CFC-F and ZTPI-F) between scores on the various temporal scales, indicating that they measure related but distinct constructs. Structural equation modelling and linear regression revealed that AUDIT scores were most strongly associated with present hedonism, symptoms of anxiety were most strongly associated with negative feelings about the present, and symptoms of depression were more moderately associated with a broader range of indicators. Conclusions:Cognitive and affective dimensions of temporal psychology relate differently to different health outcomes, and researchers need to be explicit and clear in reporting findings. Mental toughness can be conceptualised as a set of attributes that allow people to deal effectively with challenges, stressors and pressure. Recent work has suggested that it may be a valuable construct to consider within educational settings. The current studies explored the associations between mental toughness and educational transitions. Study 1 examined the relationships between mental toughness and concerns about moving to a new school in 105 children aged 12–13 years of age. The results revealed significant relationships between several aspects of mental toughness, but particularly confidence in abilities, and children’s concerns. Study 2 examined the relationships between mental toughness and adjustment to university in 200 undergraduate students at various stages of their course. The results revealed a role for several aspects of mental toughness; commitment, control of life, control of emotion, confidence in abilities and interpersonal confidence. The results are discussed in terms of implications for educational practice. It is suggested that measures of mental toughness could be used to identify individuals who may benefit from additional support during transition to a new school or to university, and that future research should explore the potential benefits of mental toughness training. A novel method for the determination of benzoic acid has been employed to identify carboxypeptidase activities in clinically relevant pathogens. Benzoic acid was determined after chemical derivatization by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). N-Benzoyl amino acid substrates were evaluated for the detection of carboxypeptidase activities in a number of clinical pathogens. Upon enzymatic hydrolysis of these substrates, benzoic acid was produced which was detected by extraction from the liquid culture supernatant, derivatization as the trimethylsilyl ester, with subsequent analysis by GC–MS. Enzymatic hydrolysis of N-benzoyl glycine was observed forS. agalactiae, M. morganii, andA. baumannii. In addition,P. fluorescenswas found to hydrolyze N-benzoyl-L-glutamic acid. Although the method provides an alternative approach for determining carboxypeptidase activity, ultimately it would not be a suitable method in a clinical setting. However, the method is well-suited for identifying carboxypeptidase activities that have not been previously described or to corroborate a carboxypeptidase assay with the ninhydrin reagent. Mental toughness has frequently been associated with successful performance in sport; however, recent research suggests that it may also be related to academic performance in Higher Education. In a series of three exploratory studies, we examined the relationship between mental toughness and different aspects of educational performance in adolescents aged 11–16, focusing on academic attainment, school attendance, classroom behaviour and peer relationships. Study 1 revealed significant associations between several aspects of mental toughness (but particularly control of life) and academic attainment and attendance. Study 2 revealed significant associations between several aspects of mental toughness (but again particularly control of life) and counterproductive classroom behaviour. Finally, Study 3 demonstrated significant associations between aspects of mental toughness (confidence in abilities and interpersonal confidence) and peer relationships. Do cultural factors influence whether individuals invest in new ventures? If so, do cultural factors influence in whose new ventures they invest? When making economic decisions, individuals are embedded in their society's cultural norms. Because countries differ on cultural dimensions, we hypothesize that an individual's culture influences whether he or she invests in new ventures. Additionally, for those who do invest, we hypothesize that their culture influences whether they invest in a family member or nonfamily member's venture. The results generally support our hypotheses and show that different cultural dimensions influence whether an individual invests in a new venture, and whether s/he invests in a family or nonfamily member's new venture. Because family members are one of the greatest sources of capital for entrepreneurs when starting a business, these results may explain the differences in new venture funding rates and new business startup rates between nations. Purpose:A new measure of sportspersonship, which differentiates between compliance and principled approaches, was developed and initially validated in 3 studies.Method:Study 1 developed items, assessed content validity, and proposed a model. Study 2 tested the factorial validity of the model on an independent sample. Study 3 further tested the factorial validity on another independent sample as well as the construct validity.Results:In Study 1, a 71-item questionnaire was developed. Exploratory factor analysis reduced the questionnaire to a 6-factor, 33-item scale explaining 47.70% of the variance. Study 2 tested this revised questionnaire in a series of confirmatory factor analyses, presenting a 24-item and 5-factor model with acceptable fit, χ2(242) = 455.9, comparative fit index = .93, Tucker-Lewis Index = .92, standardized root mean square residual = .05, root mean square error of approximation = .04. Study 3 provided some evidence to support the construct validity of the 24-item scale using theoretically associated measures.Conclusions:This series of studies provided some initial validity evidences of the Compliant and Principled Sportspersonship Scale. Despite the limitations of overgeneralizing cutoff values for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA; e.g., Marsh, Hau, & Wen, 2004), they are still often employed as golden rules for assessing factorial validity in sport and exercise psychology. The purpose of this study was to investigate the appropriateness of using the CFA approach with these cutoff values for typical multidimensional measures. Furthermore, we ought to examine how a model could be respecified to achieve acceptable fit and explored whether exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) provides a more appropriate assessment of model fit. Six multidimensional measures commonly used in sport and exercise psychology research were examined using CFA and ESEM. Despite demonstrating good validity in previous research, all eight failed to meet the cutoff values proposed by Hu and Bentler. ESEM improved model fit in all measures. In conclusion, we suggest that model misfit in this study demonstrates the problem with interpreting cutoff values rigidly. In 2010, the Australian residential construction sector contributed about 28% of the value of all construction and was responsible for 8% of the total energy consumption. Residential construction will continue to increase to cope with the demand due to population growth. Owing to land scarcity, construction on sloping sites has become a common construction method for residential development in Australia. This method has economic benefits but poses environmental issues as it damages topsoil, disturbs natural drainage and groundwater pathways and imposes additional stress on soil under fill. The life cycle energy consumption of the construction process is examined in relation to residential projects on sloping sites on a range of slopes and soil types in New South Wales, Australia. Forty-one detached dwellings were selected and a service life of 60 years assumed for the study. The research findings reveal that the slope for each type of soil has a positive correlation with life cycle energy consumption. As part of the onsite construction process, the results also show that the energy consumption of construction on sloping sites plays a significant factor in the life cycle energy analysis of a building. Lung disease is responsible for more than 95% of morbidity and mortality in cystic fibrosis. The exact pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis lung disease remains poorly understood. Experimental models are therefore vital for use in research. Animal models and immortalized cell lines both have inherent limitations. Explanted lungs removed from people with cystic fibrosis at the time of transplantation represent a potentially valuable but technically and logistically challenging source of primary cystic fibrosis bronchial epithelial cells. In this study, pieces of segmental bronchus from explanted lungs were treated with patient-specific antimicrobials prior to isolation of bronchial epithelial cells. Cultured cells were characterized by their morphology under light microscopy, cytokeratin and hematoxylin-eosin staining, and electrophysiological profile. Primary bronchial epithelial cells were successfully cultured from 15 of 22 patients attempted. The cells exhibited typical epithelial morphology, staining for cytokeratin, lack of responsiveness to forskolin treatment, and remained viable after storage in liquid nitrogen. Seven unsuccessful cultures failed due to early infection with bacteria known to colonize the airways pretransplant. The results show that primary bronchial epithelial cell culture is possible from explanted cystic fibrosis lungs. This provides an important cellular model to elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms in cystic fibrosis lung disease and to investigate potential therapeutic targets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

G. E. Moore famously noted that saying 'I went to the movies, but I don't believe it' is absurd, while saying 'I went to the movies, but he doesn't believe it' is not in the least absurd. The problem is to explain this fact without supposing that the semantic contribution of 'believes' changes across first-person and third-person uses, and without making the absurdity out to be merely pragmatic. We offer a new solution to the paradox. Our solution is that the truth conditions of any moorean utterance contradict its accuracy conditions. Thus we diagnose a contradiction in how the moorean utterance represents things as being; so we can do justice to the intuition that a Moore-paradoxical utterance is in some way senseless, even if we know what proposition it expresses. Background: Medical students and preceptors commonly disagree on methods of clinical instruction in ambulatory care, although the extent of the problem is not documented. Purpose: The purpose is to identify disagreement and concordance between students and preceptors for teaching behaviors in ambulatory care. Methods: We surveyed students and preceptors at 4 U.S. schools. Respondents rated 58 behaviors on two scales. Disagreement was recognized when the percentage of students and preceptors who recommended a behavior and rated it important differed by over 15% (p < .01). Results: Disagreement was identified for 8 behaviors (14%). Six were valued less by students, including "watch the student perform critical tasks in history taking and other communication" (59% compared with 82%). Two behaviors were valued more by students, including "delegate responsibility to the student for the wrap up discussion with the patient" (82% compared with 61%). Conclusions: Students and preceptors disagree regarding the value of a minority of teaching behaviors. Experiments were conducted to compare the annealing of nano-porous aluminum oxide membranes by 2.45 GHz microwave radiation and by conventional (resistive element) furnace heating. The starting material was Al2O3 membranes that were 60 µm thick, 13 mm in diameter and containing pores of approximately 200 nm diameter. Changes in the porosity and morphology were recorded from digital processing of scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. The data indicates that both microwave and conventionally-heated annealing resulted ht a decrease of surface porosity and an apparent increase in the number of pores. However, microwave annealing consistently resulted in a 4-5% greater reduction in porosity and a greater increase in the number of (small) pores than conventionally-heated annealing. These results are consistent with a non-thermal mechanism for microwave-enhanced surface diffusion, although the complex morphology of the pores precluded a quantitative theoretical analysis. A conceptual framework for studying customer satisfaction in Australian residential construction is developed using marketing theory merged with construction concepts. The framework aims to act as a stepping stone for determining how empirical data from real residential construction situations and real customers, fits marketing theory. To this end, customer satisfaction is modelled as a gap between two constructs: pre-purchase expectations and purchase perceptions. A parallel marketing concept known as the purchase decision process is used to model identifiable inputs to the two constructs, thus creating the ability to model different customer profiles. The purchase decision process is adapted to suit residential construction and can be described as: housing needs recognition, search for tenders, evaluation of competing contractors, signing of contracts, progressive construction outcomes and practical completion outcomes. The first four contribute to pre-purchase expectations and the remainder to perceptions of what is actually provided. Service quality, product quality and price are modelled as features that manifest consistently during the purchase decision process and therefore in pre-purchase expectations and purchase perceptions, as well. In the UK construction industry there are different strategies used in practice for the insurance of subcontracted work of which two predominate: one is for subcontracted work to be insured by both main contractor and subcontractor (model A) and the other is for only the main contractor to insure the subcontracted work (model B). The extent of use of these approaches is discussed and the rationales for them are presented in the context of research undertaken by questionnaire surveys and structured interviews. The paper provides a background to the requirements for subcontractor insurance found in commonly used forms of contract, including FIDIC. Four possible models of subcontractor insurance are identified and their relationships to the contract provisions in model forms is outlined. Two of the models have little practical relevance to subcontractor insurance and the reasons for this are given. About 75% of the main contractors in the research sample were found to adopt model A for all disciplines, although the reasons given were not entirely consistent. About 15% of the sample adopt model B for all disciplines and the remainder use different models for different disciplines. Again, the rationales for these choices were not found to be robust. The main conclusions are first that the choice of strategy for subcontractor insurance is highly independent of both the discipline and the selected form of subcontract, and second that some commercial decisions in this area may be sub-optimal. There is an unreconciled argument over the immediate commercial advantages claimed by many for model A and the potential for longer term reduction in insurance costs which might arise from the widespread adoption of model B. This case study provides objective evidence supporting the hypothesis that female ejaculation, a partial, infertile homologue of male ejaculation, exists. A karyotypically normal, multiparous woman suffered for a decade with urinary stress incontinence. During that time she had learned to inhibit an orgastic response which led to bedwetting. Although the liquid produced did not appear to be urine, she falsely concluded that her orgasmic expulsion was a manifestation of urinary incontinence. Using feedback from a Vaginal Myograph, she learned to do Kegel exercises properly, and the urinary stress incontinence soon disappeared. Around this time she became aware of the concept of female ejaculation and its possible association with an erotically sensitive area that could be stimulated through her anterior vaginal wall. Stimulation of this area, the "Grafenberg spot," produced what she described as orgasm which felt "deeper" than orgasms in response to vulvar stimulation. Such an orgasm was often accompanied by expulsion of liquid from the urethra. Chemical analysis indicated that the expulsion was not urine. Kegel's theory (1952a) concerning the sexual importance of the pubococcygeus muscle was combined with Singer's theory (1973) of "uterine" orgasms to produce the hypothesis that women who ejaculate at orgasm have stronger pelvic muscle contractions under voluntary control than women who do not ejaculate. The vaginal myograph and a new "uterine myograph" developed for this project were utilized to measure EMG levels in 47 women. Ejaculators were found to have significantly stronger uterine contractions than non-ejaculators. The Grafenberg spot, an area of exceptional sexual sensitivity located in the anterior wall of the vagina, was identified in every subject. Hartman and Fithian's version (1974) of Kegel's theory of vaginal sexual sensitivity at "4 and 8 o'clock" was not supported; sexual sensitivity was focused at 12 o'clock in 90% of the subjects. Kaplan's description (1974) of two "phases" of orgasm (in males) is expanded to account for ejaculation in both males and females. The debate about the nature and purpose of housing management in Britain has shown frequent tensions between a narrow, property‐based approach and a broader, welfare approach. This article assesses the factors influencing the debate, particularly those relating to recent social developments and government policy changes. The article looks at the responses of the housing profession to these pressures and the way that the profession has sought to develop initiatives of its own that address the need for a more broadly based approach. The conclusion is that, although important, these initiatives are not a sufficient basis for effective management unless major questions are addressed by the government. These questions include residualization of social housing, the government's current approach to the public sector generally, and, most important, the levels of investment in the housing stock.
