The private rental market costs are placing a burden on household budgets, thus significant pressure is on governments and private housing organisations to supply more social and affordable housing solutions. This research evaluates the key elements of medium- and high-density liveable and accessible social and affordable urban housing precincts. Focusing on investigations into an Australian housing case study, the authors establish a liveability framework to improve understanding of whole-of-life needs. Through a comprehensive literature review, a case study and a series of in-depth interviews with key stakeholders from the housing sector five key elements were identified. These key elements include: (1) Liveability, (2) Accessibility, (3) Value equation, (4) Regulatory and policy environment, and (5) Adoption and overcoming barriers. Organisations choose to sponsor charity sport events (CSE) to achieve a variety of marketing objectives. Sponsoring CSEs is different than traditional sport event sponsorship programmes because CSEs combine sport with charity. The complexity of CSE sponsorship has attracted researchers from different disciplines, which has resulted in a wide-ranging body of literature. The purpose of the current systematic literature review is to synthesise the existing body of knowledge to identify future research opportunities. A systematic literature review of the existing CSE sponsorship literature was conducted. In total, 42 English peer-reviewed journal articles were analysed to summarise the geographic location, methodologies, theories, constructs, and managerial implications of the existing body of literature. The results reveal that a high proportion of the existing research has examined CSE sponsorship programmes in the United States. The majority of the articles reviewed collected cross-sectional data through questionnaires to investigate the outcomes of CSE sponsorship. Based upon the managerial implications advanced within the existing body of CSE sponsorship literature, event participation segmentation can assist in creating meaningful leverage initiatives. Furthermore, event sponsors are encouraged to share their underlying motivation to support the CSE and invite employees to volunteer at the event. Future research should collect longitudinal data from event participants and use the scroll back method to examine CSE sponsorship programmes. Scholars should also adopt physiological measures as a complementary data source to self-reported data to create a more holistic understanding of CSE sponsorship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Increasing interest in poverty alleviation at the beginning of twenty-first century has facilitated the rapid growth of various anti-poverty tourism interventions (ATIs) around the globe. The tourism-poverty alleviation link, however, is still not well established, partly due to a paucity of appropriate evaluation approaches that are capable of simultaneously providing researchers, practitioners and policy-makers with a deeper understanding of an ATI’s mechanisms, the complexity surrounding its operational processes and evidence of its impacts. Additionally, ATI stakeholders’ values and influences play a significant role in ATI evaluation yet their perspectives are often overlooked. Theory of Change (ToC) has the potential to generate a holistic picture of an ATI, as this innovative approach has been developed to connect stakeholders’ theories of context with the mechanisms and outcomes of an intervention. Utilizing a case study of microfinance tourism in Vietnam, this paper provides readers with insight into ToC and proposes a conceptual framework which guides the application of ToC to facilitate the effective evaluation of ATIs. Multi-owned properties (MOPs) continue to proliferate as governments seek to reduce urban sprawl, revitalize inner cities and meet the housing need of a growing population. Yet limited research has focused on the privatization of urban governance and liveability implications arising in these developments. The way power mechanisms are exercised in strata title communities and the resultant effects on unit residents and owners is a key issue. With owner committees playing a central role in governing and regulating common property, as well as resident conduct, the pervasive power relations found in strata titled complexes have the potential to trigger multiple strands of conflict. The way that governance plays out in MOPs is key to understanding their embedded power relations. This study explores the exercise of power in MOPs and how community is evoked as a way to govern relations. We also consider what occurs when notions of community are subverted, and the expected “lifestyle” is held hostage to ongoing conflicts and issues of exclusion. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Ethical tourism initiatives have increasingly been framed as tools to educate tourists about global citizenship (GC), yet it is unclear how these initiatives are conceptualised, planned and implemented by tourism providers. This paper focuses on a form of ethical tourism known as microfinance tourism (MFT). It critically explores MFT providers’ perspectives on what constitutes the goals of educating tourists about GC and how MFT can be designed and implemented to achieve these goals. The study adopted a qualitative approach utilising in-depth interviews with 12 key informants from 6 MFT organisations in Tanzania, Mexico, Jordan and Vietnam. The results reveal that MFT providers rely on an experiential learning process to educate tourists. However, as part of this learning process, MFT initiatives are located on a continuum, constituting those initiatives designed to increase tourists’ compassion and philanthropic actions (i.e. ‘thin’ GC) through to those initiatives seeking to build solidarity and global discussions between tourists in order to challenge the structures that perpetuate global injustice (i.e. ‘thick’ GC). These results highlight the diversity of tourism providers’ perspectives pertaining to GC, the effect diversity has on the design of tourism initiatives and the resultant outcomes of GC education utilising ethical tourism. Vertical communities are increasing as cities adopt compact planning approaches. However, the neoliberal urban development approach is often male dominated and reflective of male values and interests [Fainstein, S. 2001.The City Builders: Property Development in New York and London 1980–2000. 2nd ed. For women, changing demographic and societal trends linked to marriage, family and household composition, have led to increasing rates of female residential investment in and occupation of, high-density developments. Little research has focused on this growing owner/occupier market. A qualitative approach framed with a material-discursive lens was used to explore women’s perceptions of liveability and consumption of space within vertical communities. In-depth, semi-structured interviews with 25 females in South-East Queensland described experiences of liveability that were influenced by the materiality of apartments and buildings that created unsafe and inappropriate spaces for children as well as affective relations of distance rather than sociality. To avoid the problems plagued by high-rise projects overseas and in Australia in earlier decades, a greater focus on women’s needs should be considered in urban research and planning. Planners, developers and other professionals need to look beyond the investor driven stock currently provided to ensure sustainable and liveable housing options for this important emerging market. The growth of high-rise developments raises questions about how the emotional and social leisurescape of the city is evoked, produced and represented. In this article, we examine how advertising images and texts promoting new high-rise developments produce notions of ‘liveability’ through the depiction of idealized spatial experiences that typify urban leisure lifestyles. The focus of our analysis is three high-rise developments in Brisbane, a self-proclaimed ‘New World City’, and the capital of Queensland in Australia's northeast. We identify how marketing images evoke particular emotions to construct desirable relationships between consumers, domestic space and urban leisurescapes. Our analysis revealed social tensions between different constructions of the liveable city and the implications for leisure planning. While Brisbane City Council sought to be inclusive in its planning for urban liveability, developers imagined urban renewal projects through exclusive lifestyle practices and normalized consumer identities (white, middle class, heterosexual, without children). Award programmes facilitate recognition and reward of innovative practices creating industry benchmarks for world-class standards. Growing recognition and adoption of sustainability practices and corporate social responsibility charters amongst hotels internationally is nudging the sustainability paradigm. However, comprehensive empirical data, detailing and describing these practices are under examination. This paper examines sustainable hotel practices of Asia-Pacific hotels utilizing an exploratory inductive content analysis of self-reported award submissions. The submissions of 64 hotels to the Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific Sustainable (HICAP) Hotel Award scheme over 2009 and 2010 were analyzed. Three primary categories of sustainability practices were identified: operations-related, community engagement and design-related initiatives. A model of sustainable hotel practices is then proposed, which will assist hotel managers in benchmarking their organization to achieve higher levels of sustainability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports on a scoping study examining the legislative basis for tourism development and planning in Australia. While planning is vital to facilitate strategic decision-making regarding the appropriate nature and scale of tourism-related developments within a destination, the legislative frameworks that provide for, control and regulate many aspects of tourism development have neither been identified nor collated in an integrated manner. This research used a case-study methodology to examine the range and scope of legislation impacting tourism development in Australia. The study identified 285 current Acts that were categorized into five broad themes. On the basis of these findings, a number of recommendations for identification, collaboration and education regarding the legislative environment have been postulated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the event management industry grows and consolidates worldwide, event management associations play an increasingly significant role in professional support to the industry and its managers. Event management associations provide newcomers and existing practitioners with the necessary skills to ensure the continued growth and success of event management professionals. This article reviews the literature on professional associations and specifically explores the issues of codes of ethics or conduct that event management associations require their members to subscribe by. While there is a growing interest in the concept of ethics, especially in the tourism and leisure industries, there are no prior studies that investigate the codes of ethics or conduct that event management associations offer. This article identifies that of the 152 professional associations servicing the events industry 39.5% (60) associations had stated codes of ethics or professional codes of conduct/standards. Content analysis of these codes of ethics/conduct indicated four major categories. Event management associations provide newcomers and existing practitioners with the necessary skills to ensure the continued growth and success of event management professionals. This paper reviews the literature on professional associations and specifically explores the services that event management associations offer to members, then concludes that event management associations have a strong record in offering a variety of professional services to members as part of their operational framework. The services offered by these associations have been ascertained by examining the significant themes that emerge from an analysis of their services. This paper reviews the literature on professional associations and specifically explores the goals and objectives of event management associations. Its study identified 147 professional associations worldwide involved with event management. Rather than use or adapt an existing framework for analysis, this study applies a grounded approach to the analysis of the content of the goals and objectives; that is, the categories of meaning were developed from an analysis of the data provided rather than imposed by an existing typology from the literature. These associations were categorized by location, including international, regional, and special interest associations, with numerous sub-categories. Regional associations were divided into continents so that there were six sub-categories. The special interest associations were included as there were a number in the sample that did not fit within the first two categories, yet they were deemed significant to the study because they dealt with event management issues within the context of a specific industry. The study concludes that event management associations have a strong record in developing goals and objectives as part of their operational framework. The key variables that emerged are information exchange, education and training, identity and recognition, ethics and standards, networks and collegiality, business management, membership, premier representative association, product development, and being a change agent.
