The rhinocricid genus Alcimobolus is a monotypic genus endemic to the Dominican Republic. Herein, we provide a redescription of Alcimobolus domingensis (DeSaussure & Humbert, 1972) based on freshly collected material. In addition, we place Alcimobolus in a phylogenetic context. We performed a parsimony analysis under implied weighting with a total of 17 taxa and 32 morphological characters. All K values resulted in a single most parsimonious tree with the same topology (length = 48 steps; total fit = 23.500; CI = 0.70; RI = 0.80). The genus is recovered as the sister group of Neocricus Chamberlin, 1941. The clade Alcimobolus + Neocricus is supported by one synapomorphy (telopodite of the anterior gonopod distally elongated) and one homoplastic transformation (opening of the paraproct not prolonged). The aim of this study was to determine the biological effects of dietary supplementation with 0.05% and 0.1% cinnamon essential oil extracted from Cinnamomum cassia on silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). The final body weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate were significantly higher in fish supplemented with 0.05% cinnamon essential oil than in the control(untreated) group. Muscle reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation levels were significantly lower in fish supplemented with 0.05% cinnamon essential oil but higher at the 0.1% concentration. Muscle antioxidant capacity against peroxyl radicals (ACAP) and superoxide dismutase activity were significantly higher in fish supplemented with 0.05% cinnamon essential oil, while ACAP levels were lower in fish supplemented with 0.1%. The total saturated fatty acid content was significantly higher in the muscle of supplemented fish than in controls, while the total monounsaturated fatty acid content was significantly higher only in fish fed 0.1% cinnamon essential oil. Finally, the total content of polyunsaturated fatty acids was significantly lower in fish fed 0.1% essential oil. Thus, data demonstrated that 0.05% C. cassia essential oil improves fish health by improving performance and muscle oxidant/antioxidant status. Higher doses of cinnamon essential oil produced oxidative stress in muscle, suggesting toxicity at the 0.1% level. Although this cinnamon essential oil diet exerted positive health effects, this diet impaired the muscle fatty acid profile, suggesting adverse impacts on human health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The characteristics of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTb) disease are still obscure in patients with solid tumours, as well as the benefits of screening and treating latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in these patients. Our objective was to trace the clinical profile of these individuals and assess the mortality predictors related to tuberculosis (TB). We reviewed the medical records of 126 patients with solid tumours malignancy and who developed TB disease between January 2009 and April 2018 at a cancer referral centre. The most common locations of malignancy were head and neck, with squamous cell carcinoma being the most frequent histological type, the majority (97/126) presenting locally invasive tumours (T3 or T4). A total of 120 had TB pulmonary and the microbiological diagnosis was performed in 103/126. The following variables were associated with the risk of death from TB: DPOC lung cancer, BMI, malnutrition, metastasis and ECOG 3 or 4. Previous chemotherapy treatment was a protective factor. Male, usage of alcohol and smoking were the most predominant patients characteristics in our sample. Amaranth is a synthetic red azo dye approved in several countries such as Canada, Australia and Brazil, but banned in the United States. There are few studies evaluating the exposure of the general population to this food colouring substance, in Brazil, specifically, there are virtually no data on its intake. This study aimed to estimate the Theoretical Maximum Daily Intake (TMDI) of the Brazilian population and to quantify Amaranth in foods that contribute the most to its consumption. Data on the presence of Amaranth were correlated with consumption data from National Household Budget Surveys carried out in 2008/2009 and 2017/2018, among people aged ten or older. The results show that the mean TMDI (mg/day) of Amaranth does not exceed the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) in any population group, it, however, may get as high as 66% of the ADI among teenagers. For the TMDI balanced by the prevalence of food consumption, that is, considering consumers only (eaters only, rather than the population mean), results show that the amounts can exceed the ADI in all population groups studied. The intake of Amaranth is higher among the younger population (adolescents) reaching up to three times the ADI in the worst-case scenario. The food groups which contribute the most to the intake of Amaranth, are 'juices/artificial juices/reconstituted powdered juice mixes' and 'soft drinks'. Laboratory tests of powdered fruit mixes and soft drinks sold in the city of Porto Alegre (Brazil) show that 17 out of 20 samples tested exceeded the limit set by Brazilian regulations (5 mg/100 mL in the final product). Primary headache disorders, such as migraine and tension-type headache (TTH), represent a significant public health concern. Besides, cognitive/mental stress was suggested to contribute to TTH and migraine physiopathology. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the existence of a causal relationship between stress (mental/cognitive or daily stress) and headache or pain improvement in migraine and TTH patients. We developed a systematic review of the literature, including studies that utilized mental/cognitive stress tasks or daily stress by lifestyle questionnaire in migraine and TTH patients. Necessarily, these studies should have healthy patients and a pain measure (quantitative sensory tests or headache/migraine detection). PubMed, EMBASE, and SCOPUS were searched, using terms about stress and primary headaches. Both mental/cognitive stress and daily stress (perceived) were related to an increase in pain perception and related to the development of headache or enhanced transient pain intensity in migraine and TTH patients. Different factors could enrich the comprehension of the influence of stress on pain/headache induction in migraine and TTH patients, including methodological standardization, consistency of assessing, and isolating the many headache triggers in randomized controlled trial studies. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the intra/inter-session and intra/inter-observer variability of manual segmentation of thickness of the pre-lens tear film, contact lens (CL), post-lens tear film, epithelium, bowman’s layer, stroma and the whole cornea and CLs with a flat and a steep fit, using a commercial high-resolution spectral-domain optical coherence tomographer (OCT). Two different observers obtained three repeated measures in two separate sessions. A high correlation was found between the values obtained by the two different observers, except for the thinner layers, epithelium, and Bowman’s layer. Inter-observer analysis showed a high consistency in the measurements obtained by both observers (r2 ≥ 0.80;p < 0.001) for the thicker layers: CL, stroma, and total cornea. Intra-observer analysis of measurements obtained by each observer within the same session displayed no statistically significant differences between the three repeated measures for both observers (p > 0.05). The present results suggest that manual segmentation of anterior segment OCT images in CL wearers provides acceptable levels of repeatability between observers and between different sessions for the thinner layers, while presenting a high level of repeatability for the thicker layers. Aim: To evaluate the ability of SC indexes in discriminating acute responses to different heel prick procedures. Methods: Observational cohort study of a systematic, convenience sample of neonates with clinical indication of capillary blood sampling by heel prick, either for glycaemia or for blood gas analysis. The Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS) was used to confirm the painful nature of the stimuli. NIPS assessment and SC measurement (Med-Storm Pain Monitor™) were simultaneously performed by two independent observers before, during and after blood sampling. Results: Sixty-eight heel prick procedures (46 for glycaemia and 22 for blood gas analysis) were applied to 16 infants. Both NIPS scores and SC peaks/s index were significantly higher during blood sampling than before or thereafter (Wilcoxon Signed Ranks, p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in NIPS score and SC peaks/s between the different heel prick procedures. Significantly higher SC area under low peaks index (Mann-Whitney, p = 0.001) and lower SC average rise time index (Mann-Whitney, p = 0.037) were registered when blood was drawn for blood gas analysis than for glycaemia, related to a sustained acute nociceptive response to a more prolonged stimulus. Conclusion: Using the conjunction of available SC indices, SC seems able to differentiate the nociceptive response to acute pain of different durations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dam installation causes profound changes in the structure and quality of aquatic habitats, transforming the lotic upstream stretches in lentic habitats and severely modifying hydrologic and sedimentary patterns downstream. As many impacts cannot be avoided, conservation actions are often implemented to minimize ecological losses. Translocation is a conservation tool that can be used to mitigate dams' impacts on freshwater species, particularly those having restricted mobility. Building from the experience of translocations actions of freshwaters mussels carried out in Portugal by the authors, and the available literature, we address the challenges of planning, executing, and following up translocations of freshwater mussels. The guidelines presented increase chances of conducting successful freshwater mussels translocations and also provide guidance for others biological groups and project types. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
