This study aimed to examine the factors associated with pedestrian–vehicle collision hotspots involving seniors and children. For the empirical analysis, we first quantified street-level images of collision hotspots involving seniors and children and non-collision hotspots in the Seoul Metropolitan Area, Korea, using deep learning analysis. Thereafter, we examined the risk factors associated with collision hotspots through logistic analyses. This study has two major findings. First, the effects of risk factors (e.g. share of sky and green space) differ between collision hotspots involving seniors and children. Second, some pedestrian safety treatments (i.e. traffic lights and sidewalks) are positively associated with collision risks. The findings suggest that varied approaches to enhancing pedestrian safety among different age groups should be considered for more effective pedestrian safety interventions. It is important to understand the differential impact of COVID-19 on the health of older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual, and people with other sexual orientations and forms of gender expression (LGBTQIA+). The objective of this study is to systematically review the impact of COVID-19 on LGBTQIA+ older adults' health including risk and protective factors. We reviewed a total of 167 records including LGBTQIA+ older adults published since 2019. Two independent reviewers screened titles and abstracts and extracted information of 21 full-text records meeting inclusion criteria using COVIDENCE software. The results show that the negative health consequences are exacerbated by personal risk (e.g., perceived homo/transphobia and ageism in LGBTQIA+ communities) and environmental factors (e.g., heterosexism within health services). The negative impact seems to be reduced by personal protective (e.g., resilience, spirituality, and hobbies) and environmental factors (e.g., technology use to increase social participation and social rituals). In conclusion, the health of LGBTQIA+ older adults has been disproportionately affected during the pandemic associated to the latest coronavirus (COVID-19). The experiences of LGBTQIA+ older adults during the pandemic are integrated in a Model of Health and Disease for LGBTQIA+ older adults. This study aimed to examine the relative importance of micro-level design features of outdoor fitness areas preferred by older adults and whether preferences varied according to gender, park accompaniment, and mobility status. A series of Adaptive Choice-Based Conjoint (ACBC) tasks were completed by older adults (n = 372, 65–93 years, 57% female) in an online survey. Ten different micro-level design features of outdoor fitness areas were examined including surface type, location of fitness equipment, equipment designed for older adults, equipment distribution, shade sails, light fixtures, shady trees, benches, drinking water, and water body near fitness area. Hierarchical Bayes analyses within Sawtooth software were used to identify the relative importance scores and part-worth utilities of the design features. For the overall sample, the three most important features were as follows: surface type (21.5%, 95% CI 20.0, 22.9); equipment specifically designed for older adults (18.7%, 95% CI 17.3, 20.2); and shady trees around the fitness area (14.0%, 95% CI 12.9, 15.0). A few significant differences in the relative ranking of design features were observed by gender and mobility status. This study investigated the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) virtual tourism to overcome problems and limitations in the senior tourism market. We explored the attributes of VR and AR in the context of vitalizing senior tourism, and the effects of such attributes on older adults' experience, perceived advantage, enjoyment, and reuse intention. Using mixed methods (i.e. qualitative and quantitative approaches), we developed four attributes of VR and AR for senior tourism and analyzed the effects of these attributes on older adults' emotional and behavioural responses. Analysis revealed significant relationships between the variables presented. In China, bicycles are a popular mode of transportation for senior citizens. A disproportionate number of traffic-related fatalities and injuries involve cyclists. The violation of cycling laws is a significant cause of cyclist crashes. Few studies have analyzed the cycling violation behaviour of seniors. Therefore, it is essential to examine the factors that influence older individuals' intention to engage in cycling violation behaviours. In this study, the effects of social-demographic characteristics, the exogenous constructs in the health belief model (HBM), and the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) on senior cyclists' violation intention were investigated using hierarchical regression analysis. Interviews were conducted with older cyclists in urban areas of Wuhan City, all above 60 years of age. The results showed that very little variance in behavioural intention could be explained by social-demographic factors. The TPB has a significantly greater capacity than the HBM to explain variance in behavioural intention. Perceived susceptibility, perceived benefit, cues to action, subjective norm and attitude significantly impacted behavioural intention, whereas perceived severity, perceived barrier and self-efficacy did not. This article seeks to illustrate the outcome of entering partnerships with open and flexible goals and lines of communication. Two unique, long-term partnerships at a medium-sized, regional museum of art and science are described, with details of the impact of these partnerships and different audiences served. Using current research on best practices for community partnerships and anecdotal information, the article outlines ways to enter open communication with community partners and what to expect out of long-term partnerships. This article presents non-representational theory as a methodological approach to illuminate the lived experiences of older people's everyday mobilities using the example of travel to and from the supermarket. Previous studies have explored older people's everyday mobilities and highlighted a number of challenges, but few studies address specific journeys, such as grocery shopping, and none empirically engage with non-representational theory. In this article we draw on a qualitative research study with participants over the age of 65 living in the UK as we investigate their journeys to and from the supermarket. We present three vignettes/personas of individuals with differing needs and experiences and find that their grocery shopping journeys are not just about procuring food but also sociomaterial events that both affect, and are affected by, bodily capabilities and mental wellbeing. We conclude with some recommendations for designing older people's local travel experiences and argue for non-representational theory as a method for accessing the socio-material world in which everyday mobilities play out. A study was conducted among 30 older adults in Mauritius about the use kitchens. They were interviewed firstly about the kitchens they had experienced in the past, and secondly to discuss and demonstrate their current kitchen and how easily they could use it. It was found that while some of the participants had age-related disabilities, they were all doing their best to cope with kitchen tasks. However, many were found to be attached to traditional equipment rather than newer labour-saving products. The study shows that there is a need to for a more inclusive approach to kitchen design to make life easier for this group of people. Objective: This study examines how seniors in Singapore use mobile devices for healthcare purposes.Methods: Semi-structured interviews with 35 mobile phone users aged between 58-82 years old.Results: Seniors regard mobile phones as important personal devices for socialization, security, and emergency purposes. Most of the seniors consider mobile telephony (voice calls and text messaging) as an accessible platform to access healthcare. Perceived usefulness, ease of use, compatibility, technology anxiety, financial cost, and self-efficacy were identified as factors affecting the use of mHealth among seniors. Although a few adopt mHealth applications and mobile Internet for health-information seeking, some younger seniors show enthusiastic attitudes toward its adoption. Additionally, some seniors also have technology anxiety and resistance toward using mHealth applications.Conclusion: Seniors use mobile phones for healthcare purposes in their daily life, and its use involves several facilitators and barriers. The objectives of this research are to explore the lifestyle dimensions of the elderly and to verify whether selected sociodemographic factors cause significant differences among their lifestyles and travel motivations. A total of 311 responses were collected with self-administered questionnaires that comprised 3 main sections: questions on lifestyle using 24 general activities, interests, and opinions (AIO) statements, 34 questions about travel motivations, and 8 basic questions about sociodemographic characteristics. The results revealed that sociodemographic characteristics, such as age, gender, marital status, education, health, and economic status, played a crucial role in explaining the difference in lifestyles and travel motivations of the elderly. This study aims to identify the role of seniors' overseas travel motivations in terms of preferred attraction types and activities, socio-demographic features, and preferred travel-related features. The results show that the motivation of potential senior travelers is a multidimensional construct. A five-cluster solution using extracted senior travel motivational factors demonstrates distinctive characteristics. The clusters show differences on gender, marital status, preferred travel partner, preferred accommodation type, and level of travel information technology acceptance, which are accounted for by preferred attraction types and activities. A majority of senior Internet users maintains persistent social connections with others through social media (SM), such as Facebook and Twitter. This research explores the impacts of helping, self-expression, and enjoyment on bonding social capital and bridging social capital which in turn influence SM involvement; it also explores the moderating effect of avoidance attachment among senior SM users. The results show that helping, self-expression, and enjoyment have significant impacts on bonding social capital and bridging social capital. Also, bonding social capital and bridging social capital have significant effects on SM involvement. Furthermore, relationships between helping and bonding social capital, between self-expression and bonding social capital, and between self-expression and bridging social capital are stronger for seniors with high avoidance attachment. Conversely, the relationships between enjoyment and bonding social capital as well as between enjoyment and bridging social capital are stronger for seniors with low avoidance attachment. Accordingly, the results of this study provide theoretical contributions to the literature of behaviour and information technology. In addition, some implications of the research and various strategies for practitioners and marketers that can be used to better increase users' involvement in SM for tourism-related activities are discussed. This study investigated how to form brand prestige of package tour in the senior tourism industry. A conceptual model was developed and tested using data collected from a sample of 331 senior tourists in Korea. The results indicated that four types of tour service performances (i.e. tourist attractions, tour guide services, food services, and accommodations) aid to enhance package tour prestige. It was also found that package tour prestige has a positive influence on well-being perception, which further positively affects brand attachment and brand loyalty. Background: Long-term benzodiazepine use in the elderly population is a significant public health problem that leads to impaired cognitive functioning, medication dependence and increased risks for adverse drug reactions. The aim of this review was to examine randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the efficacy of different methods for tapering and discontinuing benzodiazepines. Method: We used four databases (Ovid, PubMed, Academic Search Complete, Web of Science) to retrieve randomized controlled trials published in peer-reviewed journals that explored different methods for tapering benzodiazepine use in a primarily geriatric population. Results: Eleven papers met the inclusion criteria. Methods to assist in benzodiazepine tapering included patient education, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and pharmaceutical adjuvants (SSRIs, melatonin, progesterone). Patient education was consistently effective in increasing benzodiazepine discontinuation success while CBT had mixed but promising results. The use of medications to help improve tapering success was inconclusive. Conclusions: Patient education is a successful, time- and cost-effective intervention that can significantly help with benzodiazepine discontinuation success. CBT may also be an effective approach. However, cost can be an issue since public healthcare coverage in Canada does not cover psychotherapy. More research is needed in looking at pharmaceutical adjuvants and their role in assisting with benzodiazepine discontinuation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interest in tourism market segmentation of seniors has been increasing in recent years as the tourism industry has begun to be aware of their importance for the sector. This is a very heterogeneous group, with greater purchasing power and lifestyle-oriented entertainment and enjoyment of leisure time by performing travel than previous generations. This study strives to contribute towards the hitherto scarce research on segmentation in senior tourism. Specifically, this work aims to determine the existence of various profiles of senior tourism by means of using socio-demographic variables, motivation and characteristics of travel of seniors. For this, two complementary analysis techniques, the nonlinear canonical correlation (OVERALS) and a two-stage cluster analysis, were used. Five market segments were identified according to the behavioural variables analysed that allow marketers to target this group in the most convenient manner and to exploit new market opportunities. Yoga is growing in popularity and has the potential to improve strength, flexibility, mobility, and balance in older adults. However, few yoga programs tailored to the unique needs of older adults exist. Rewind Yoga™ was created to address this gap and a pilot study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the program on physical function parameters. Healthy, older adults (n = 16) residing in a retirement community (55 and older) enrolled in a study examining the effect of Rewind Yoga™ on strength, flexibility, dynamic balance, and endurance as measured by the Senior Fitness Test. A single group design (n = 14) with three repeated measures (baseline, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks) was used. Results from repeated measures analysis of variance indicated significant (P < 0.05) improvements in all measures of the Senior Fitness Test at 6 and 12 weeks. Chinese outbound travel is thriving, with seniors taking an increasing market share. However, although outbound travel in general has been researched quite well, little is known specifically about the outbound travel behavior of Chinese seniors, or the effects of information technology (IT) on their vacation patterns. This study is an initial and exploratory attempt to understand the relation between IT usage and tourism behavior (travel motivation, travel intention, and sociodemographics) of Chinese senior outbound travelers. In the United States, the proportion of older adults continues to grow with respect to the total population. Decisions regarding the location and accessibility of age-restricted communities (55 and older) can influence mobility and ultimately affect the health and quality of life of community members. Therefore, identifying age-restricted community accessibility to transit and pedestrian facilities using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is useful for both existing and proposed developments. This research aims to examine transit and pedestrian accessibility/connectivity for age-restricted communities through the development of the Age-Restricted Community Connectivity Assessment (ARCCA) method based on connectivity thresholds and spatial analysis. The development of this method provides agencies with a step-by-step process that can be followed to determine existing and proposed improvements to enhance pedestrian and transit accessibility. ARCCA is applied to a case study in Pennsylvania that compares an urban region (Philadelphia County) and a rural region (Union County) to determine transit and pedestrian accessibility. The case study results suggest that ARCCA is applicable to real-world networks as it supports planning principles of urbanized areas providing more walkable and transit-oriented connections. The method can be used by transportation planning agencies to evaluate community connectivity to sustainable mobility throughout the country. Recommendations focused on method implementation, infrastructure development, and policy implications (such as educating residents on mobility options) are provided to improve connectivity and ensure high mobility for age-restricted community members. The Functional Movement Screen™ (FMS™) is aimed at assessing fundamental movements and is often used to identify players’ injury risk. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the FMS™ can be used to predict injuries in veteran footballers (aged > 32 years). Eighteen veteran football teams (n = 238) were recruited and prospectively followed for 9 months. The players (44 ± 7 years; 178 ± 7 cm, 84 ± 11 kg) performed the FMS™ at the start of the study period. Players’ exposure hours and injuries were recorded. The difference of FMS™ overall score between injured and uninjured players was not significant (11.7 ± 2.9 vs 12.2 ± 2.8 points; Mann-Whitney U-testP = 0.17). Players scoring <10 (score < 1 standard deviation [SD]) below the mean) had a significantly higher injury incidence (z-statisticsP < 0.05) compared to an intermediate reference group (mean ± 1 SD; scores of 10–14). No lower injury incidence for players with scores of >14 (score > 1 SD above the mean) was found. Further analyses of potential risk factors suggest higher age, lower body mass and a longer football career to be risk factors for injuries. Seniors’ use of mobile devices for tourism-related purposes is an emerging social trend, but there is little theoretically based research on the topic. This study examines seniors’ usage of mobile devices for tourism-related purposes, applying the extended model of goal-directed behavior. Usefulness and enjoyment are shown to have significant effects on seniors’ use of mobile devices for tourism purposes and prior knowledge of information technology has a significant impact on seniors’ desire and behavioral intention to use mobile devices for tourism-related purposes. Adding to temporal approaches, this article examines changes in retirees’ tourism behaviour, focusing on life cycle and period effects. Based on microdata exploitation of a broad survey of visitors to Andalusia, first, a comparative analysis of retired and other tourists’ behaviour plus a cluster analysis of retirees’ behaviour were repeated in three separate time periods (2000, 2004, and 2008). Second, the results were compared over time. Cross-sectional outcomes indicate that retirees’ behaviour is different from other tourists, but also heterogeneous. The temporal analysis shows both signs of stability and change in retirees’ behaviour. Over the past decade, a growing number of older Americans have sought reverse mortgages as a means of converting home equity to cash. Although this model of using one’s home as a resource may benefit seniors experiencing financial crises, recent advertisements have portrayed mortgage reversion as a free cash-generating machine, dispensing large sums of money to all senior homeowners with no strings attached. This media analysis provides an historical backdrop against which 10 recent advertisements are reviewed, finding that most ads fail to provide a complete picture of mortgage reversion, thus preying upon older adults, especially those living in poverty. The stated and revealed travel behavior of a sample of 60 rural drivers aged 54-92 years provided a basis to explore the potential effectiveness of two common driver's license restrictions aimed at older drivers: time of day and road class. The potential utility and impact of these restrictions have not been explored with revealed data for jurisdictions with a large population of rural older drivers where automobile dependence is high. Data were drawn from a multiday Global Positioning System-based travel diary survey of rural older drivers in New Brunswick, Canada. Revealed travel data showed that over 50 percent of the rural drivers in the sample did not drive after dark, and 40 percent drove less than 1 percent of their total surveyed kilometers on major highways, higher rates than from participant-stated responses. The proportion of participants taking night trips and traveling on major highways decreased with age. The majority of trips taken after dark by all participants had a rural destination. The average daily kilometers driven on major highways by men and women aged 75 years and older was nearly identical (1.79 km/day). These exposure considerations suggest that restricting night travel and major highway travel for the oldest rural drivers (75 years and older) may have limited utility given that the majority of participants did not drive in these situations, and for those who did, most of their trips were in rural areas where enforcement could be expected to be limited. A better approach may be to encourage increased self-regulation through training, age-friendly upgrades to transportation infrastructure to help rural older drivers stay driving safely as long as possible, and the development of appropriate rural alternatives to help a driver transition to nondriver. The senior travel market has become an increasingly important area of interest to travel agents. This study examines senior travellers based on their travel experience, behavior, and overall experience on visiting Thailand, in terms of their age, marital status, and education. In this study, a sample of 384 senior foreign tourists responded to a survey carried out at the Bangkok International airport. Seniors are shown not to be a uniform conservative market, which has implications for product development. Profiles differed in the priority attached to travel experience factored into health, safety, language, itineraries, and general conditions in connection with travel. Travel behavior of seniors also differs in terms of types of tour, lodging preference, outdoor activity, mode of transportation, type of information used, and people travelled with. Objectives. The present study examined the influence of age on the morbidity and mortality of pedestrian victims while controlling for confounding factors. Methods. The Pedestrian Crash Data Study (PCDS) database was used for a cross-sectional study to compare the outcome of senior (age ≥60 years) and adult (age 19 to 50 years) pedestrian victims. The outcome measures were the Injury Severity Score (ISS), Maximum Abbreviated Injury Score (MAIS), Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS), and Mortality. Logistic regression models were used to estimate age-associated risks while controlling for confounders such as vehicle type, impact speed, and pedestrian height, weight, and gender. Results. Compared to the adult victims, the seniors had a higher average ISS (23 vs. 16, p = 0.018) and higher mortality (30 percent vs. 11 percent, p ≤ 0.001). The seniors were also more likely to have an ISS ≥9 (odds ratio = 2.72; 95 percent CI: 1.31–5.68) and to die (odds ratio = 6.68; 95 percent CI: 2.37–19.88). The seniors were approximately twice as likely to have higher AIS scores to almost every body region. Conclusions. The adjusted age-dependent risks indicated by the current study should be considered when calculating or projecting pedestrian morbidity and mortality. This article portrays the struggles old lesbians face in creating intimate friendships by using a Record of Service (ROS) of a support group. Using the ROS as an analytical tool, this paper demonstrates the efficacy of group work with this client population. The article also offers an explanation of the uses and mechanisms of the Record of Service and proffers it as a tool for accountability, practice examination, and skills improvement. Two sessions of a weekly support group for lesbians over sixty-years-old, conducted at SAGE (Senior Action in a Gay Environment), are excerpted to give the reader a personal view of this unique population as well as the practice of group work and the use of ROS. Age- and gender-based market segmentation studies have appeared frequently in the travel literature. The authors examined the implicit assumptions made in previous age- and gender-related studies. In addition, a well-established marketing theory was employed to compare age- and gender-based market segments. The findings indicate that the two age (senior vs. younger) and gender segments are heterogeneous and provide different measurement reliabilities. It notes the analysis of temporal patterns that use Theme programme and the comparative statistical analysis that use the SPSS programme. Study results show differences in the athletes' tactical and technical performances.
