World Athletics have introduced regulations preventing female athletes with certain differences in sex development from competing in the female category. We argue these regulations are not justified and should be removed. Firstly, we examine the reasoning and evidence underlying the position that these athletes have a substantial mean difference in performance from other female athletes such that it constitutes an advantage, and argue it is not sufficient. Secondly, if an advantage does exist, it needs to be demonstrated it is unfair. We argue the advantage would not be unfair because to say otherwise relies on a presupposition about whether these athletes are female, which involves contradictory and inconsistent definitions of sex. Thirdly, we contend that even if it is established that there is an advantage and it is unfair, the response of requiring athletes to take testosterone-suppressing medication is not appropriate and is unfair. Drawing on theories of aversive racism and colour-blindness, which stress the invisibility of contemporary racism, this article analyses online discussions on taking the knee (TTK) during EURO2020 men's football tournament. While highly visible racist abuse directed at Black English players after losing the final to Italy (dominative racism) received most public attention and repudiation, based on 6,850 English language tweets published on Twitter/X, this article shows how subtle racism and colour-blindness were reinforced in discussions around TTK over the duration of the tournament (aversive racism). The article also shows how individuals online developed a variety of strategies (evidence, othering, critique, and activism) to challenge the main arguments against anti-racist activism in football (identified in four themes: BLM, Marxism, virtue signalling, and woke). The article makes an original contribution by examining the changing intensity of online conversations on TTK over the duration of the tournament. Our analysis identifies key moments in the tournament, political elites' rhetoric, and trends of success and failure as relevant factors that shaped vernacular conversations online. The discussion ultimately argues that investigating the temporal patterns of public discussions on (anti)racism provides valuable insights to understand the contemporary complexity of racism in football and society more broadly. This article generates new insights into the changing profession of journalism. Empirically, we present the findings of 21 interviews with journalists working in the Irish and UK sports beats on their experiences of online abuse. Conceptually, we address the under-theorising of emotions in journalism by extending the utility and entanglement of emotion work and emotional labour. In doing so, we posit future lines of theoretical enquiry about individual and social regulation. Several key discoveries are presented. First, sports journalism is a distinctive profession because significant authentic emotional work is undertaken. This is only accentuated when online abuse occurs. Journalists are deeply affected by this abuse, personally and professionally. Second, online abuse towards sports journalists is now so ubiquitous as to be habitually accepted, and it has obscured the distinction between public and private spaces. Third, in response, sports journalists have been compelled to develop their own emotional strategies, including self-censorship, to cope with and manage online abuse. The findings presented here also pose practical and existential questions about the sustainability of the profession, especially in the absence of formal institutional supports or even an informal code of practice about how to cope with and respond to online abuse. The current work examined why collectivists engage in more chronic social tuning: to seek harmony or to avoid rejection. In Study 1, 159 Asian participants self-reported being more motivated to avoid rejection in a situation involving social tuning. In Study 2, 190 Asian participants engaged in social tuning to a classmate's perceived views more when primed to avoid rejection than seek harmony. While study 3 found that 192 American participants reported avoiding rejection in social tuning situations, Study 4, showed that 206 American participants did not engage in social tuning when primed to avoid rejection. Collectivists will social tune and reduce prejudice when motivated to avoid rejection. This warrants future attention to cultural variation in other social tuning domains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

American Indians are disproportionately affected by nutrition-related chronic conditions. It is critical to understand Native American food environments that contribute to disparities in nutrition-related conditions. Data from the USDA Food Environment Atlas were used to examine the associations between food environment characteristics, diabetes, obesity, and food insecurity. Counties with the highest percentage of Native American residents had fewer grocery stores and more food insecurity and obesity than counties with fewer Native Americans residents. Future studies may consider evaluating policies or interventions that impact the food environment to assess the effects on obesity and food security outcomes among Native Americans. My main goal here is to develop a functional analysis of cheating and corruption in sports, and to differentiate cheating within the broader category of corruption. Whereas officials can act corruptly, they cannot cheat. In contrast, sports participants, since they occupy two roles, can do both. I argue that although acts of cheating are acts of corruption, not all corrupt acts by competitors are acts of cheating. I also respond to some skeptical challenges and criticisms of the concept of 'cheating' by providing some opposing arguments and a provisional definition. I argue that cheating in sports occurs in the context of a complex institutional practice. It transpires due to some failing in the efforts and/or limitations of sports officials to prohibit it. In central cases it consists in both the functional and ethical violation of the constitutional norms of a sport in the service of obtaining unearned victory for the cheater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this theoretical article, we explore the possibility that instead of a mathematical connection arising "in-between" two (or more) pre-existing ideas or objects, which have presumably been known or understood, that connection is itself the motor of understanding. The standard view of connection, in which two existing ideas or concepts are brought together, is based on a philosophy of identity which seeks to establish objects and their properties and then compare them. In contrast, a philosophy of difference sees objects as "becoming" through difference. We explore this new way of conceptualising connection not only because it reflects our commitment to a relational ontology, but because it enables us to better handle the enmeshment of affect in mathematical learning without subordinating it to the cognitive. The global COVID-19 pandemic produced several changes in nearly every aspect of our lives. Ride-sharing platforms such as Uber and Lyft must adapt their strategies and aims to stay afloat. The analysis in this study is based on 216,120 tweets in the U.S. between January 1, 2019, and December 30, 2021, about Uber. It includes four separate analyses: Popularity and Usage Analytics, Sentimental Analytics, Voice Analytics, and Topic Mining Analytics. The result shows that usage and popularity of Uber on Twitter negatively affect Covid and death cases. In contrast, vaccination helps mitigate the shock of Covid. Additionally, ' 'Uber's policy and business model was beneficial in improving its positive image during the pandemic; On the early breakout of Covid in the U.S. Uber had a jump on the positive sentiment, mainly because Uber provided safer service than public transportation. Exploring online criticisms of the "take the knee" protest during "Euro 2020", this article examines how alt- and far-right conspiracies were both constructed and communicated via the social media platform, Twitter. By providing a novel exploration of alt-right conspiracies during an international football tournament, a qualitative thematic analysis of 1,388 original tweets relating to Euro 2020 was undertaken. The findings reveal how, in criticisms levelled at both "wokeism" and the Black Lives Matter movement, anti-white criticisms of the "take the knee" protest were embroiled in alt-right conspiracies that exposed an assumed Cultural Marxist, "woke agenda" in the tournament's organisation and mainstream media coverage. In conclusion, it is argued that conspiratorial discourses, associated with the alt-right, provided a framework through which the protest could be understood. Phosphorus fertilizer is commonly applied to soils in crop production as diammonium phosphate (DAP). To decrease ammonium addition to the environment, triple super phosphate (TSP) is being considered as a DAP replacement. This study was undertaken to compare the response of maize plants to soil fertilization with TSP vs. DAP under well-watered conditions, under soil-drying conditions, and root hydraulic conductance. It was found for well-watered conditions in a controlled environment that there was no difference in plant growth between DAP to TSP treatments. In soil dry-down experiments, however, the initiation of the decrease in transpiration rate was unexpectedly quite different between DAP and TSP treatments. The soil water content threshold for initiation of decrease in transpiration rate with DAP treatment (average fraction transpirable soil water for two experiments = 0.285) was consistent with common observations, but the threshold associated with TSP treatment occurred at an unusually high soil water content (average fraction transpirable soil water for two experiments = 0.545). The higher threshold with TSP resulted in an extended period of soil water use, i.e. soil water conservation. Soil water conservation resulting from the TSP treatment was associated with a 27% greater shoot mass accumulation following a 4-wk re-watering period after the water-deficit treatment than measured with the DAP treatment. The high threshold for decrease in transpiration resulting from TSP was consistent with measured lower root hydraulic conductance as compared to DAP treatment. The unexpected discovery of TSP-induced initiation of transpiration rate decrease at high soil water content is consistent with greater crop drought resilience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Young people with intellectual disabilities (ID) are at an increased risk for experiencing mental health issues compared to their peers without disabilities. Further, there are limited resources available to help accurately assess mental health disorders and that are accessible for adolescents with ID. This paper describes the iterative development and pilot testing of the Diagnostic Interview for Adolescents and Adults with Intellectual Disabilities (DIAAID). The authors utilized Evidence Center Design and Universal Design principals to develop the DIAAID; a multi-informant diagnostic interview. The DIAAID development resulted in the creation of 15 adolescents disorder interviews and 24 caregiver disorder interviews. Preliminary results suggest that the DIAAID is a feasible and accessible diagnostic interview for adolescents with ID and their caregivers. The inclusion of peer work within mental health policy offers potential for lived experience expertise to shape the construction of, and subsequent responses to, mental health 'problems'. However, increasingly, scholars and activists are highlighting limits to such inclusionary practices. We explore these tensions through a critical analysis of problem representations including peer workers within Australian mental health policy. Drawing on Mad studies and user/survivor scholarship, we suggest that despite popular conceptions of inclusion as having universally positive effects, the inclusion of peer workers within policy has both liberating and troubling effects. Such effects include positioning peer workers as complicit in managing 'problems' that reinforce psy-regimes of governance and limiting the political subjectivities available to promote alternative representations. By highlighting such complexity, we endeavour to create opportunities for re-imagining peer work and inclusion in ways that bring such practices closer to achieving self-determination and social justice. Individuals with lived experience of distress are increasingly included within mental health systems through employment as peer workers. The inclusion of peer workers has both the potential to challenge, and to reinforce, existing ways of thinking and relating within the mental health system. This article looks at the ways that peer workers are included in Australian mental health policy, and the potential consequences for peer workers and peer work practice. We suggest that attention needs to be paid to both the liberating and troubling aspects of inclusion, to ensure that peer work continues to challenge unhelpful ways of thinking and relating regarding mental health. Topics include reassessment of Quine's critique, the Kantian and Neo-Kantian influences on Carnap's philosophy; and the fundamental incommensurability of their philosophical positions.

While the field of recovery science has burgeoned over the past two decades, little research has considered the experiences of university students in recovery from addiction, particularly in Canada. Addressing this gap, using a recovery capital framework, 16 qualitative interviews were conducted to explore students' meanings, experiences, and barriers/facilitators to recovery from problematic substance use and/or behaviors. Reflexive thematic analysis revealed three main themes: 1. multiple recovery pathways and identities; 2. stigma and disclosure; and 3. proximity to campus community and resources. Soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines, HG type 1.2.5.7 is the most virulent and widespread SCN biotype in the southern states of the USA, but its effect on soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) nitrogen fixation (NF) activity and growth is not well documented. The objectives of this study were to: (1) measure the impact of HG type 1.2.5.7 on NF activity during the early vegetative stage of three soybean genotypes and (2) compare the impact on soybean leaf and root development, and plant growth. The NF activity of two susceptible (S) genotypes ("Ellis" and "Williams 82") and one resistant (R) genotype (PI 88,788), subjected to a 10,000-egg treatment, was measured using an in-situ flow-through acetylene reduction assay. The average NF activity of the soybean genotypes was decreased by SCN activity. Time points assessment showed that the NF activity was differently impacted among the genotypes. Based on the measured values, the NF activity was decreased by 30% in SCN infected plants of Williams 82 but that of PI 88,788 and Ellis was affected. Likewise, soybean leaf color and leaf area were affected by SCN infection, but there was no impact on root length and root area. These results showed that SCN HG type 1.2.5.7 can exhibit varying negative impact on NF and shoot growth of S soybean genotypes, while R genotypes may be unaffected. To address structural omissions of the experiences of makers of colour from the cultural space of craft, Crafts Council initiated the project, Disrupting the craft canon: the cultural value of craft. Partnering with an interdisciplinary team of researchers from Glasgow Caledonian University London, the project was awarded a research grant in June 2022 as part of the first round of funding of the Centre for Cultural Value's Collaborate programme. Collaborate supports innovative new partnerships between cultural sector practitioners and academics exploring under-explored questions around cultural value so as to deepen existing evidence or surface new evidence. Adopting a Living Lab approach, the team investigated the meanings and cultural value of craft and specifically the impacts of race, racism, immigration and migration on cultural production, making and value grounded in the reality of individuals' and local communities' lives. This Participatory Activist Research project helped develop and test research tools including vignettes and object-based stimuli in place-based craft making events with selected Black and Asian UK communities in London and Birmingham. Sinclair highlights the need for 'research that identifies and recognises the value of the knowledge, experience and cultural heritage of makers of colour in professional, community or other crafts spaces'. This article reflects on the collaborative process, sharing the findings of our community-based research and thereby adding to our understanding of craft's potential cultural value and the contributions craft can make to sustainable development. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched its Futures of Education policy initiative in early 2020. The process sought to open a sustained global policy debate on educational futures in a world typified by climatological instability, social inequity, and political unrest. Drawing on Deleuze and Guattari’s theory of assemblages, this paper explores how the Futures of Education initiative simultaneously produces, captures, and reroutes flows of desire by opening its policymaking process to global consultation. Following this line of thinking, the paper introduces a speculative method for critical policy analysis that utilises AI-powered tools to generate expressive images and imaginaries of education futures based on UNESCO’s three stages of policy development. The authors argue that this method enables a step beyond conventional interpretations of a policy’s discursive content toward a speculative analysis of its processual dynamics and expressive potentials. Ultimately, the paper underscores the generative possibilities of AI-assisted methods for tracking flows and expressions of desire within education policy assemblages under conditions of climatological and political upheaval. The authors encourage further experimentation with plugging emerging technologies into global policy assemblages to better understand how desire is invested into particular images and imaginaries of educational futures. One of the first ways some trans youth narrate their gender is through the process of choosing a name. Trans youth's negotiation of naming is particularly complex as they juggle family affinities and independence, as well as try on new identities and build relationships with peers. In the midst of transitioning, and often while still materially and emotionally dependent on their families, trans youth re-write their birth stories through, in part, the process of choosing a new name. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 10 racially and gender diverse trans youth in Canada, I explore how trans youth choose a name in relation to their family. I analyze these stories using Cavarero's theory of the formation of the self to think about what the work of names and naming exposes about how trans youth navigate their relationships with their family and their identity development. In their naming practices, trans youth discussed the relationship they have with their family and their negotiation of family reactions to the disclosure of their trans identity. Their narratives about naming and family challenge the binary discourse about family reactions as acceptance or rejection and provide stories about the complex ways trans youth navigate their relationship with their family in their daily lives. Ascertaining how racket orientation angle differences at ball-impact influence the accuracy of different squash strokes could assist player skill development and possibly reduce the number of unforced errors hit within a match. The purpose of this study was to identify differences in racket orientation angles of accurate and inaccurate forehand and backhand drive, volley and drop shots. A magnetic-inertial measurement unit embedded in a racket output orientation angles of twelve male junior players, with five accurate and five inaccurate shots per player per stroke analysed. Paired samples t-tests revealed that inaccurate backhand drop shots exhibited significantly (p < 0.05) less racket roll angle (racket face less open) at impact than accurate shots, indicating this parameter was a determining factor in the accuracy of this stroke. Racket orientation angle differences between accurate and inaccurate shots of the remaining strokes were too small to be used to distinguish shot accuracy. There was significantly greater variability in racket orientation angles during inaccurate forehand drop and backhand drive shots compared to accurate shots. These findings demonstrate how racket orientation angle differences at ball-impact can influence the accuracy of shots and highlights the need for consistent racket orientations to allow for an accurate shot. The researchers' aims for this preliminary study was to develop an instrument, guided by the Theory of Health-related Family Quality of Life, to measure health-related family quality of life (HR-FQoL) as perceived by women with cancer. The researchers used a two phase design for instrument development: (1) establishing face validity of a 38-item instrument with an expert panel and patient review, and (2) focusing on the internal structure and construct validity of the instrument with responses from female patients (N = 236) with a cancer diagnosis (breast, gynecologic). The researchers identified a final 25-item HR-FQoL instrument with four sub-scales that each captured multiple concepts within the Theory of HR-FQoL. The resulting instrument maybe used by researchers and clinicians to assess various aspects of health-related family quality of life among female breast and gynecological cancer survivors. Climate change is currently and will continue impacting human health, however, beliefs about the level of threat vary by demographics, region, and ideology. The purpose of this study was to assess factors related to climate change and health beliefs using cross-sectional data from the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). Data from 5,075 respondents in the 2022 iteration of HINTS was used for this study. Chi-square tests were used to evaluate demographic differences among those who believe climate change will harm health a lot compared to some, a little, or not at all. Generalized ordinal logistic regression models were used to examine the relationship between the belief that climate change will harm health and independent variables regarding trust in scientists, health recommendations from experts, and demographic characteristics. Female, Black, Hispanic, and college graduate respondents had higher odds and people in the Southern U.S. those aged 35–49, 50–64, and 75years or older had significantly lower odds of believing climate change would harm their health. Those who trust information about cancer from scientists and those that believe health recommendations from experts conflict or change had higher odds of believing climate change would harm health. Our analysis highlights factors that impact climate change and health beliefs, which may provide targets for tailoring public health messages to address this issue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TIMM50 is a core subunit of the TIM23 complex, the mitochondrial inner membrane translocase responsible for the import of pre-sequence-containing precursors into the mitochondrial matrix and inner membrane. Here we describe a mitochondrial disease patient who is homozygous for a novel variant in TIMM50 and establish the first proteomic map of mitochondrial disease associated with TIMM50 dysfunction. We demonstrate that TIMM50 pathogenic variants reduce the levels and activity of endogenous TIM23 complex, which significantly impacts the mitochondrial proteome, resulting in a combined oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) defect and changes to mitochondrial ultrastructure. Using proteomic data sets from TIMM50 patient fibroblasts and a TIMM50 HEK293 cell model of disease, we reveal that laterally released substrates imported via the TIM23SORT complex pathway are most sensitive to loss of TIMM50. Proteins involved in OXPHOS and mitochondrial ultrastructure are enriched in the TIM23SORT substrate pool, providing a biochemical mechanism for the specific defects in TIMM50-associated mitochondrial disease patients. These results highlight the power of using proteomics to elucidate molecular mechanisms of disease and uncovering novel features of fundamental biology, with the implication that human TIMM50 may have a more pronounced role in lateral insertion than previously understood. Objective: College students with disordered eating (DE) are at increased risk of body focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs). Both DE and BFRBs are described as impulsive and compulsive. However, the associations of impulsive DE with impulsive BFRBs and compulsive DE with compulsive BFRBs have not been examined. Methods: 191 college-aged students completed a survey of BFRBs and DE. Results: Participants who reported hair pulling were twice as likely to report clinically significant DE than those who denied hair pulling (p =.022). Participants who endorsed distressing hair pulling (p =.026), skin picking (p =.052), and nail biting (p =.094) were twice as likely to report clinically significant DE than those who were not distressed by these behaviors. Evidence did not support the association of BFRBs and DE along an impulsive/compulsive continuum. Conclusions: Results suggest that BFRBs and DE often co-occur, and the role of impulsivity and compulsivity in these behaviors is complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article revisits scholarship on the Tōa Dōbun Shoin, an innovative international business school operated by the Japanese in Shanghai from 1901 to 1945. After reviewing the school's history, we carefully examine the institution's course mix, language programming, product-studies focus, and research trips. We conclude that Japanese educators did not design the Tōa Dōbun Shoin curriculum all on their own in China, which has been the assumption of scholars since the end of the Second World War. Instead, architects of the institution amply borrowed from a flourishing commercial school system in late nineteenth-century Europe, showing particular interest in the curriculum at the Institut Supérieur de Commerce at Antwerp in Belgium. Both the European and Japanese business schools, it is argued, need to be re-examined in the context of the burgeoning global trade in which they operated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we report the initial stages of Response to Intervention (RTI) implementation in one school that participated in the Getting it Right from the Start (GIRFTS) pilot study. Implementation of an RTI framework for oral language and reading was supported by teacher professional learning and a dedicated Implementation Support Partner (ISP). Participants were interviewed to explore their perceptions of the change process and identify barriers and enablers to implementation. Thematic analysis was used to identify factors that supported the implementation of RTI, including strategic collegial relationships, teacher motivation, and a desire to achieve consistency of assessment and instruction. The ISP was seen as a crucial coaching role for keeping implementation on track, providing feedback and advice, and helping teachers translate professional learning into their school context. The global energy transition is disrupting old industries needing to decarbonise. Meanwhile, resource-rich countries stand to benefit from the rush for ‘energy-transition minerals’. Here, institutional investors and governments promote climate policies compatible with natural resource extraction. This begs the question: How have extractive conglomerates reorganised their interests to benefit from the energy transition? Focusing on the nickel extraction to lithium battery to EV industry in Indonesia, this article contends that the intersection of decarbonisation, developmentalism, and resource nationalism offer extractive capital an ‘EV-fix’ for declining legitimacy. This is more than an ideological shift, as new alliances of state capital, domestic conglomerates, politicians and international battery and EV manufacturers are forged under a ‘green development-resource nationalist nexus’. A prompt diagnosis of bacteraemia and sepsis is essential. Markers to predict the risk of persistent bacteraemia and metastatic infection are lacking. SeptiCyte RAPID is a host response assay stratifying patients according to the risk of infectious vs sterile inflammation through a scoring system (SeptiScore). In this study we explore the association between SeptiScore and persistent bacteraemia as well as metastatic and persistent infection in the context of a proven bacteraemia episode. This is a prospective multicentre observational 14-month study on patients with proven bacteraemia caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Gram-negative bacilli. Samples for assessment by SeptiCyte were collected with paired blood cultures for 4 consecutive days after the index blood culture. We included 86 patients in the study, 40 with S. aureus and 46 with Gram-negative bacilli bacteraemia. SeptiScores over the follow-up were higher in patients with Gram-negative compared to S. aureus bacteraemia (median 6.4, IQR 5.5–7.4 vs 5.6 IQR 5.1–6.2, p = 0.002). Higher SeptiScores were found to be associated with positive blood cultures at follow-up (AUC = 0.86, 95%CI 0.68–1.00) and with a diagnosis of metastatic infection at day 1 and 2 of follow-up (AUC = 0.79, 95%CI 0.57–1.00 and AUC = 0.82, 95%CI 0.63–1.00 respectively) in the context of Gram-negative bacteraemia while no association between SeptiScore and the outcomes of interest was observed in S. aureus bacteraemia. Mixed models confirmed the association of SeptiScore with positive blood cultures at follow-up (p = 0.04) and metastatic infection (p = 0.03) in the context of Gram-negative bacteraemia but not S. aureus bacteraemia after adjusting for confounders. SeptiScores differ in the follow-up of S. aureus and Gram-negative bacteraemia. In the setting of Gram-negative bacteraemia SeptiScore demonstrated a good negative predictive value for the outcomes of interest and might help rule out the persistence of infection defined as metastatic spread, lack of source control or persistent bacteraemia. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a disease characterised by elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). The impact of straining and exercise on ICP regulation is poorly understood yet clinically relevant to IIH patient care. We sought to investigate the impact of Valsalva manoeuvres (VMs) and exercise on ICP and cerebrovascular haemodynamics in IIH. People with IIH were prospectively enrolled and had an intraparenchymal telemetric ICP sensor inserted. Three participants (age [mean ± standard deviation]: 40.3 ± 13.9 years) underwent continuous real-time ICP monitoring coupled with cerebrovascular haemodynamic assessments during VMs and moderate exercise. Participants had IIH with supine ICP measuring 15.3 ± 8.7 mmHg (20.8 ± 11.8 cm cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)) and sitting ICP measuring −4.2 ± 7.9 mmHg (−5.7 ± 10.7 cmCSF). During phase I of a VM ICP increased by 29.4 ± 13.5 mmHg (40.0 ± 18.4 cmCSF) but returned to baseline within 16 seconds from VM onset. The pattern of ICP changes during the VM phases was associated to that of changes in blood pressure, the middle cerebral artery blood velocity and prefrontal cortex haemodynamics. Exercise led to minimal effects on ICP. In conclusion, VM-induced changes in ICP were coupled to cerebrovascular haemodynamics and showed no sustained impact on ICP. Exercise did not lead to prolonged elevation of ICP. Those with IIH experiencing VMs (for example, during exercise and labour) may be reassured at the brief nature of the changes. AbstractIn the context of calls to decolonise education in European contexts, this paper draws on coloniality-based critiques of Eurocentric modernity to take up the links between democracy, slavery, and colonialism in education. Starting from the position that modernity requires epistemological support to sustain racism and white supremacy in European democracies, we read coloniality-based critiques of democracy with empirical literature about the teaching of slavery. We consider possibilities for revised critical engagements with democracy and with the history of European colonialism and slavery. The paper builds on and contributes to recent decolonial critiques of democracy in education by explicitly engaging a tension raised around the possibility of disentangling democracy from its colonial roots. Between 1950 and 1985, a period now referred to as the “Sixties Scoop”, over 24,000 Indigenous and Inuit children were removed from their families and placed into primarily non-Indigenous foster and adoptive homes across Canada. Whereas the Residential school system was explicitly racist and genocidal in its orientation, the Sixties Scoop racism was cloaked in accusations of neglect and child-saving rhetoric. Drawing on Hacking’s concept of looping effects, we examine how social workers classify their work and the Indigenous children they removed from their homes. We analyse sixteen interviews with social workers working in child welfare during the Sixties Scoop who were involved with the removal of Indigenous children. This article links broader systems that are fraught with racism, to the rank-and-file individuals tasked with carrying out child protection policies, and it probes the interpretations and classifications used both then and now to understand Indigenous child removal. This study examined the effects of different high-heeled footwear heights on lower extremity medial tibiofemoral cartilage mechanics and longitudinal failure probability, using musculoskeletal simulation and probabilistic failure modelling approaches. The current investigation examined 24 participants, walking in four different footwear (high heel, medium heel, low heel, and trainer). Walking kinematics were collected using an 8-camera motion capture system and kinetics via an embedded force plate. Medial tibiofemoral loading was explored using musculoskeletal simulation and cartilage probability via probabilistic modelling. Distance travelled per day was inputted into the model as 6.0 km per day. This was modelled as participants completing all 6.0 km in the trainer condition whereas in the heeled footwear, this was modelled as participants completing 3.0, 2.4, 1.8, 1.2 and 0.6 km in the heels, and the remaining distance undertaken in the trainers. Cartilage forces and strains were significantly greater in the high (force = 3.39BW & strain = 0.26), medium (force = 2.98BW & strain = 0.22) and low heels (force = 2.91BW & strain = 0.22) compared to the trainer (force = 2.52BW & strain = 0.19). Cartilage failure probability was significantly greater in the high (3.0 km = 21.26%, 2.4 km = 18.45%, 1.8 km = 18.15%, 1.2 km = 17.90% & 0.6 km = 17.52%), medium (3.0 km = 9.97%, 2.4 km = 9.86%, 1.8 km = 9.76%, 1.2 km = 9.66% & 0.6 km = 9.55%) and low heels (3.0 km = 9.13%) compared to the trainer (1.89%), and in the high heel condition decreased linearly alongside reductions in modelled walking distance. The findings from the current investigation show that high heels of increasing height have a profoundly negative influence on medial knee cartilage health and strongly advocate that walking distance in heeled footwear and the heel height itself be reduced wherever possible. Evidence supports the positive influence of compassion on care experiences and health outcomes. However, there is limited understanding regarding how compassion is identified by people with lived experience of mental health care. To explore the views and experiences of compassion from people who have lived experience of mental health. Participants with a self-reported mental health condition and lived experience of mental health (n = 10) were interviewed in a community setting. Characteristics of compassion were identified using an interpretative description approach. Study participants identified compassion as comprised three key components; 'the compassionate virtues of the healthcare professional', which informs 'compassionate engagement', creating a 'compassionate relational space and the patient's felt-sense response'. When all these elements were in place, enhanced recovery and healing was felt to be possible. Without the experience of compassion, mental health could be adversely affected, exacerbating mental health conditions, and leading to detachment from engaging with health services. The experience of compassion mobilises hope and promotes recovery. Health care policymakers and organisations must ensure services are structured to provide space and time for compassion to flourish. Urban subsidence poses significant challenges for rapidly developing cities. Published InSAR data reveal Kathmandu as a prime example, demonstrating an alarming rate of subsidence during rapid urban expansion. To monitor the spatiotemporal evolution of recent subsidence, we use Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data and the LiCSBAS open-source processing package. Vertical surface motion maps from 2015 to present reveal many localized zones with high subsidence rates (>100 mm year−1), while the mountains that surround the valley have experienced slight surface uplift of ~5 mm year−1. The highest subsidence rate is ~200 mm year−1 and occurs in the centre of the Kathmandu metropolitan area. The distribution of subsidence in the valley matches with areas of the Pliocene to recent sediment up to 500 m thick. The deep aquifer compaction is likely to be the main driver of subsidence in the Kathmandu Valley. Time-series data show a dominant linear subsidence signal with weak sinusoidal signal peaks associated with groundwater recharge of shallow aquifers during the monsoon season. Subsidence rates decrease in proximity to the main river channels, likely driven by the seasonal recharge into the distal floodplain. The torso muscles play important roles in longitudinal rotation between the upper and lower torso on land but demands on these muscles at different swimming speeds and their role in torso twist in front crawl remains unclear. We aimed to compare torso muscle activity at different front crawl speeds and to assess the relationships between torso muscle activity and torso twist. Three-dimensional kinematics and torso muscle EMG data were collected from 15 male swimmers during middle-distance and sprint front crawl. Internal oblique, external oblique, and rectus abdominis, but not erector spinae, activities were greater at sprint than middle-distance pace. Sprint swimmers are likely to benefit from focusing training on the abdominal muscles. Cross-correlation peak coefficients between muscle activity and torso twist occurred with 517–775 and 400–600 ms lag at middle-distance and sprint paces (respectively). These lags are beyond the torso muscle electromechanical delay (~220 ms) and are too long for these muscles to produce movement changes. Further, peak coefficients coincided with both positive and negative shifts, indicating that muscle activity did not always precede kinematic changes. The torso muscles are therefore likely to play a greater role in maintaining stability and controlling posture in front crawl than producing torso twist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

England's 'shock' exit from the Euro 2016 Football Championship and the UK electorate's decision to (Br)exit from the EU occurred almost simultaneously, providing an interesting lens through which to examine unfolding tensions in the UK and its component identities – all the more so given the presence of two of the three other component countries of the UK, Wales and Northern Ireland, at the Championship. Our analysis of 34,324 original tweets featuring both the hashtag #Euro2016 and #Brexit shows a clear tendency to conflate British and English identities in the context of Brexit, a conflation coloured by largely negative characteristics. We pay particular attention to how recurring themes concerning leadership, accountability and immigration are articulated in the context of both sporting and political events. In addition, we examine the significance of the structural logic of social media in these discussions of the sport-nation nexus, with reference to vortextuality and mediatization. While much is known about the therapeutic qualities of music, less is understood about its impact on well-being from a holistic perspective. To address this limitation, this study examines how music is used as a resource to manage all aspects of well-being: physical, mental, intellectual and social. Adopting a transformative consumer research perspective, the researchers partnered with community organisations and participants in the design of the research. This study explores experiences of older adults (60–81) and adolescent teenagers (15–17) in Ireland over a seven-month period, using interviews, participant observation of intergenerational music workshops, and participant music diaries to explore this phenomenon. Findings place emphasis on the role of intergenerational social well-being in addition to the role of music in pain management, structuring the everyday, providing purpose, confronting death/uncertainty, and the management of identity formation/loss. The Cape Khoe-San experienced a significant change in weapons technology when Europeans began colonising the Cape in the seventeenth century. Khoe-San first adapted their military tactics to counter the firearms used by Dutch settlers in conflicts over land possession. With colonisation, many Khoe-San found themselves being incorporated into the colony as hunting and military, both formal and informal, assistants. Deemed sufficiently colonised by the Europeans, there was now an effort to arm Khoe-San with guns. The eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries saw great developments in firearm technology. In tracking these developments alongside historical accounts of Khoe-San with firearms, it is noticed that by the first half of the nineteenth century, Khoe-San fighting for the colony were being supplied with the most ideal firearms for colonial warfare in the Cape. Low serum testosterone is common in cirrhotic men, but the impact of disease aetiology remains uncertain. This study compares serum total testosterone (TT) levels by disease aetiology and assesses its prognostic value. Single-centre retrospective study of cirrhotic men who had TT levels measured between 2002 and 2020. A cut-off of 12 nmol/L was used to define low TT and 230 pmol/L for calculated free testosterone (cFT). Linear and logistic regression used to adjust for variables known to affect testosterone levels and assess for an association between levels and outcomes. Of 766 cirrhotic men, 33.3% had alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) and 11.9% had non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The median age was 56 years (interquartile range (IQR) 50–61), and the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score 14 (IQR 9-20). TT levels were low in 53.3% of patients, (median 11.0 nmol/L; IQR 3.7–19.8) and cFT low in 79.6% (median 122 pmol/L; IQR 48.6-212). Median TT was lower in men with ALD (7.6 nmol/L; IQR 2.1–16.2) and NAFLD (9.8 nmol/L; IQR 2.75-15.6) compared to other aetiologies (11.0 nmol/L; IQR 3.73-19.8) (p < 0.001 for all), which remained true after adjustment for age and MELD score. TT was inversely associated with 12-month mortality or transplant (381 events, p = 0.02) and liver decompensation (345 events, p = 0.004). Low serum testosterone is common in cirrhotic men and is associated with adverse clinical outcomes. TT levels are significantly lower in ALD and NAFLD compared to other disease aetiologies. In this paper, we shed light on the question of whether it is morally permissible to enslave artificially intelligent entities by looking at up to date research from the social sciences – as well as the ancient lessons from Jewish law. The first part of the article looks at general ethical questions surrounding the ethics of AI and slavery by looking at contemporary social science research and the moral status of 'Sex Bots' – AI entities that are built for the purpose of satisfying human sexual desires. The second part presents a Jewish perspective on the obligation to protect artificial intelligent entities from abuse and raises the issue of the use of such entities in the context of sex therapy. This is followed by a review of slavery and in particular, female slavery in Jewish law and ethics. In the conclusions, we argue that both perspectives provide justification for the 'Tragedy of the Master' – that in enslaving AI we risk doing great harm to ourselves. This has significant and negative consequences for us – as individuals, in our relationships, and as a society that strives to value the dignity, autonomy, and moral worth of all sentient beings. The objectives of this study were to describe the characteristics, management, and outcomes of patients treated by paramedics for hypoglycemia, and to determine the predictors of hospital admission for these patients within 72 hours of the initial hypoglycemia event. We performed a health record review of paramedic call reports and emergency department records over a 12-month period. We queried prehospital databases to identify cases, which included all patients ⩾18 years with prehospital glucose readings of <72 mg/dl (<4.0 mmol/L) and excluded terminally ill and cardiac arrest patients. We developed and piloted a standardized data collection tool and obtained consensus on all data definitions before initiation of data extraction by trained investigators. Data analyses included descriptive statistics univariate and logistic regression presented as adjusted odds ratios (aOR) with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). There were 791 patients with the following characteristics: mean age 56.2, male 52.3%, type 1 diabetes 11.6%, on insulin 43.3%, median initial glucose 54.0 mg/dl (3.0 mmol/L), from home 56.4%. They were treated by advanced care paramedics 80.1%, received intravenous D50 37.8%, intramuscular glucagon 17.8%, oral complex carbs/protein 25.7%, and accepted transport to hospital 70.2%. Among those transported, 134 (24.3%) were initially admitted and four more were admitted within 72 hours. One patient was admitted, discharged, and admitted again within 72 hours. Patients without documented histories of diabetes (aOR 2.35, CI 1.13–4.86), with cardiovascular disease (aOR 1.81, CI 1.10–3.00), on corticosteroids (aOR 4.63, CI 2.15–9.96), on oral hypoglycemic agent(s) (aOR 1.92, CI 1.02–3.62), or those given glucagon (aOR 1.77, CI 1.07–2.93) on scene were more likely to be admitted to hospital, whereas patients on insulin (aOR 0.49, CI 0.27–0.91), able to tolerate complex oral carbs/protein (aOR 0.22, CI 0.10–0.48), with final GCS scores of 15 (aOR 0.53, CI 0.34–0.83), or from public locations (aOR 0.40, CI 0.21–0.75) were less likely to be admitted. There are several patient and prehospital management characteristics which, in combination, could be incorporated into a safe clinical decision tool for patients who present with hypoglycemia. Undertaking environmental assessments for small, rural development projects has proven to be both vexing and essential. Our research considers one approach to assessing such projects, community-based environmental assessment (CBEA). The purpose of our work was to gauge current CBEA practice and consider next generation approaches in the face of challenges such as lack of adequate capacity, resource and power imbalances, achieving meaningful participation, narrow conceptions of sustainability, and weak follow-up and monitoring. Through a literature review and semi-structured interviews with various EA experts from around the globe, we consider these issues and propose a framework for next-generation community-based environmental assessment (NG-CBEA) that builds on four key next generation themes; sustainability, meaningful public participation, follow-up and monitoring, and learning. There is a need for wildlife professionals to work together to more effectively protect wildlife health; however, collaboration between people of different professions and institutions can be challenging. Our objective was to examine and compare how the conservation and animal health fields share wildlife health data and information in Ontario, Canada. Fifty-five (50%) of 110 invited participants completed an online questionnaire about their wildlife health communication network over the previous 12 months. The professional communication networks (i.e., ego-networks) of practitioners were compared with respect to data sharing between institutions and professions. Results showed low levels of tie dispersion and high levels of ego-alter similarity. There was more data and information sharing occurring between people of different institutions than between people of different professions based on comparing tie dispersion and ego-alter similarity values for these categories. Bernard Suits and other formalists endorse both the logical incompatibility thesis and the view that rule-breakings resulting in penalties can be a legitimate part of a game. This is what Fred D'Agostino calls 'the problem of penalties'. In this paper, I reject both Suits' and D'Agostino's responses to the problem and argue instead that the solution is to abandon Suits' view that the constitutive rules of all games are alike. Whereas the logical incompatibility thesis applies to games in which players' actions are perfectly controlled, it does not apply to sports. This insight not only justifies the rejection of formalism as a theory about the nature of sport but it also helps explain the greater normative complexity of sports, which in turn leads to the idea that in sports 'cheating' should be interpreted as a genus.
