Corexit EC9500A is an oil dispersant used prominently in the Deepwater Horizon spill both below water and on the ocean surface. Aquatic tests show that it has low toxicity to many crustaceans, corals and fish but is more toxic to plankton, daphnia and many species early life stages. Human health concerns found low acute toxicities but potentials for chronic effects with large exposures. Dispersant use should be based on many factors, of which toxicity is just one which should be considered. However, freshwater system toxicity requires more study before widespread use is recommended.
