Testing truth-default theory, individual-level variation in lie frequency was parsed from within-individual day-to-day variation (good/bad lie days) by examining 116,366 lies told by 632 participants over 91 days. As predicted and consistent with prior findings, the distribution was positively skewed. Most participants lied infrequently and most lies were told by a few prolific liars. Approximately three-quarters of participants were consistently low-frequency liars. Across participants, lying comprised 7% of total communication and almost 90% of all lies were little white lies. About 58% of the variance was explained by stable individual differences with approximately 42% of the variance attributable to within-person day-to-day variability. Introduction: Noggin is an antagonist of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and has a strong effect on osteogenesis. Osteoporosis is a common complication of transfusion dependent beta-thalassemia (TDT) and denosumab has been recently emerged as a promising therapeutic option. This was a post hoc investigation of serum noggin levels among TDT patients with osteoporosis who participated in a randomized, placebo-control, phase 2b study. Methods: Patients received either 60 mg denosumab (n = 32) or placebo (n = 31) every 6 months for 12 months. Noggin was measured, for the first time in thalassemia patients, at baseline and at 12 months, using a recently developed high sensitivity fluorescent immunoassay. Results: Both groups showed a significant increase in noggin serum levels (denosumab p < 0.001; placebo p < 0.0001). Interestingly, the increase was higher in the placebo group. Furthermore, we observed a strong correlation between noggin and wrist bone mineral density (r = −0.641, p = 0.002) only in the denosumab group. Conclusion: In conclusion, higher noggin levels reflected more BMP inhibition, since our assay detects free bioactive noggin, which in turn impaired bone formation in placebo group. Previous studies reported that detection of polymorphisms inherited through paternal model could be potential markers for the Non-Invasive Prenatal Diagnosis (NIPD) of β-thalassemia. The aim of the current study was to find out the associations of rs10768683 and rs968857 with transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) in a southern Iranian population. A total of 175 subjects were investigated, divided into patients with TDT as case group (n = 75) and healthy people as control group (n = 100). Genomic DNAs were extracted from peripheral blood using salting out procedure. Genotyping rs10768683 and rs968857 was carried out by ARMS-PCR, then statistical analyses were assessed using SPSS, and Medcalc ver. 18 software. Data showed that rs10768683 was statistically significant in co-dominant model of inheritance (P = 0.025, OR = 2.11 [1.08-4.15]) and genotype frequencies of CG among controls and cases were 0.68 and 0.80, respectively. However, according to genotype frequencies, there was no association between rs968857 and TDT among cases and healthy controls in any models of inheritance. In the last 2 years, the effort to identify genes affecting common diseases and complex traits has been accelerated through the use of genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The availability of existing large collections of linkage data paved the way for the use of family-based GWAS. Although most published GWAS used population-based designs, family-based designs have played an important role, particularly in replication stages. Family-based designs offer advantages in terms of quality control, the robustness to population stratification and the ability to perform genetic analyses that cannot be achieved using a sample of unrelated individuals, such as testing for the effect of imprinted genes on phenotypes, testing whether a genetic variant is inherited or de novo and combined linkage and association analysis. Mortalin has been found to be up-regulated by 2D-protein gel analysis in isolated rodent islets exposed to cytokines. In islets from two rat strains with different sensitivity to the toxic effects of cytokines we observed a significant difference in IL-1β mediated mortalin expression. Constitutive over-expression of rat mortalin in NIH3T3 cells reduced cellular survival in accordance with mortalin being associated to cellular senescence. Hence we consider the gene encoding for mortalin at chromosome 5q31.1 a putative candidate gene in cytokine induced beta-cell destruction. We scanned the human mortalin gene for polymorphisms and identified three novel polymorphisms. Neither the SNPs individually nor as constructed haplotypes showed disease association tested by (E)TDT in a Danish type 1 diabetes (T1DM) population. Furthermore, we tested the D5S500 microsatelite located close to 5q31.1 without finding linkage to (T1DM). In conclusion, the functional data identifying a difference in mortalin expression in IL-1β stimulated islets between two rat strains and over-expression of mortalin in NIH3T3 cells associated with decreased viability suggests a functional role for mortalin in cytokine mediated beta cell destruction; however, the identified polymorphisms did not reveal any association in the presence of linkage disequilibrium of mortalin to T1DM in the Danish population. To clarify the association of monoamine oxidase A– variable number of tandem repeat (MAOA-pVNTR) with susceptibility to Tourette’s syndrome (TS) in Chinese Han population we discuss the genetic contribution of MAOA–VNTR in 141 TS patients including all their parents in Chinese Han population using transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) design. Our results revealed that no significant association was found in the MAOA gene promoter VNTR polymorphism and TS in Chinese Han population (TDT = 1.515, df = 1,p > 0.05). The negative result may be mainly due to the small sample size, but we don’t deny the role of gene coding serotonergic or monoaminergic structures in the etiology of TS. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

FKBP1B belongs to immunophilins superfamily and functions as a cytosolic receptor protein of FK506. The role of FKBP1B in the immunosuppressive pathway of FK506 is well established. Previously, we reported a strong evidence of linkage between D2S171 microsatellite marker (located in vicinity of FKBP1B gene) and susceptibility to autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs). In this study, we report linkage disequilibrium between the dimorphism (C/T) in the 3′ untranslated region (3′ UTR) of FKBP1B gene and susceptibility to AITDs. DNAs were extracted from a large Tunisian family affected with Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and analysed by PCR-RFLP using DraIII restriction enzyme. Our results showed an excess of transmission of the allele C from heterozygous parents to affected offspring (transmission disequilibrium test (TDT)=4.76; p =0.012 ). This suggests a linkage disequilibrium of 3′ UTR (C/T) SNP with AITDs. Moreover, The FBAT analysis gives a significant association with the C allele under the recessive model ( χ 2 =5.50; p =0.018 ).
